Abstract:The equilibrium geometry and 48 vibrational normal-mode frequencies of the neutral and cationic ground state and the cationic first excited states of naphthalene isomers were calculated and characterized in the adiabatic representation by using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and second order perturbation theory (CASPT2). Photoionization-efficiency (PIE) spectrum of molecular beam conditions in energy range 8 - 11 eV were determined by Kaiser et al. and they were analyzed using time-dependent density functional theory calculations (TDDFT). CASSCF calculations and PIE spectra simulations by one-photon excitation equations were used to optimize the cationic excited (D1) and neutral ground (S0) state structures of naphthalene isomers. The photoionization-efficiency curve was attributed to the S0  D1 electronic transition in naphthalene, and a curve origin was used at 8.14 eV. The ionization-induced geometry changes of the bases are consistent with the shapes of the corresponding molecular orbitals. The displaced harmonic oscillator approximation and Franck-Condon approximation were used to simulate the PIE curve of the D1  S0 transition of naphthalene, and the main vibronic transitions were assigned for the ππ* state. It shows that the vibronic structures were dominated by one of the xxx active totally symmetric modes, with v8 being the most crucial. This indicates that the electronic transition of the D1 state calculated in the adiabatic representation effectively includes a contribution from the adiabatic vibronic coupling through Franck-Condon factors perturbed by harmonic oscillators. The present method can adequately reproduce experimental PIE curve in the molecular beam condition.

Abstract:We investigate the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodynamics of gas phase 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene and cyanobenzene, recently detected in the Taurus molecular cloud, by combining synchrotron radiation and a double imaging electron/ion coincidence setup. The high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectra (TPES) of all three molecules are obtained experimentally from which the adiabatic ionization energies are reported with very high accuracy, particularly for 2-cyanonaphthalene, for which no data exist at this level of precision. Theoretical calculations are performed to compare with the TPES for the ground electronic state of the cations. Furthermore, the different features observed in the extended TPES have been assigned to the different molecular orbitals with the help of the outer valence Green's function calculations. The present experiments also shed light on the kinetic energy distribution of the photoelectrons as a function of the incident photon energy, to describe their contribution to the photoelectric heating effect in the interstellar medium. In this context, we show how kinetic energy distributions can be obtained from our data for any given photon energy, such as the omnipresent Lyα line, or any given interstellar radiation field (ISRF). In addition, from the total ion yields, we estimate the photorates for a few ISRFs. Finally, we discuss the photodissociation of the two cyanonaphthalenes, quoting the activation energies of the dissociation channels with the help of Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus modeling. It is observed that CN substitution does not cause any appreciable change to the VUV dissociative photoionization relaxation channel.

Photodesorption of ices I: CO, N2 and CO2

Abstract:A longstanding problem in astrochemistry is how molecules can be maintained in the gas phase in dense inter- and circumstellar regions. Photodesorption is a non-thermal desorption mechanism, which may explain the small amounts of observed cold gas in cloud cores and disk mid-planes. This paper aims to determine the UV photodesorption yields and to constrain the photodesorption mechanisms of three astrochemically relevant ices: CO, N2 and CO2. In addition, the possibility of co-desorption in mixed and layered CO:N2 ices is explored. The ice photodesorption is studied experimentally under ultra high vacuum conditions and at 15-60 K using a hydrogen discharge lamp (7-10.5 eV). The ice desorption during irradiation is monitored by reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy of the ice and simultaneous mass spectrometry of the desorbed molecules. Both the UV photodesorption yields per incident photon and the photodesorption mechanisms are molecule specific. CO photodesorbs without dissociation from the surface layer of the ice. N2, which lacks an electronic transition in this wavelength range, has a photodesorption yield that is more than an order of magnitude lower. This yield increases significantly due to co-desorption when N2 is mixed in with or layered on top of CO ice. CO2 photodesorbs through dissociation and subsequent recombination from the top 10 layers of the ice. At low temperatures (15-18 K) the derived photodesorption yields are 2.7x10^-3 and <2x10^-4 molecules photon-1 for pure CO and N2, respectively. The CO2 photodesorption yield is 1.2x10^-3x(1-e^(-X/2.9)) + 1.1x10^-3x(1-e^(-X/4.6)) molecules photon-1, where X is the ice thickness in monolayers and the two parts of the expression represent a CO2 and CO photodesorption pathway.

Abstract:Non-covalent interactions are rapidly gaining interest as they are often crucial in determining the properties of materials, and key to supramolecular chemistry and to biochemistry. Non-covalent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) complexes are in particular relevant to astrochemistry and combustion chemistry where they are involved in the initial steps of condensation and soot formation, respectively. Here, we investigated non-covalent π-π stacking and CH-π interactions in naphthalene and acenaphthene clusters using high-resolution IR-UV spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. We identified spectral shifts that occur upon complexation and thereby evaluated predicted potential energy surfaces. Although theory predicts a blueshift, a redshift is observed for the aliphatic CH-π interactions in the experimental spectrum of acenaphthene upon dimerization, indicating that CH-π interaction indeed affects the aliphatic bonds, while a blueshift is predicted, consequently theory deserves attention here. The results provide strong indications for a prevalent parallel naphthalene dimer, showing that π-π stacking interactions become significant for bicyclic and larger PAHs.

Abstract:The photoionization of Ne·CO complex in the energy region of 13.8–14.2eV was investigated with photoionization mass spectrometry using a synchrotron radiation source in Hefei. The ionization energy (IE) of Ne·CO is determined to be 13.965eV from its photoionization efficiency curve whose characterization is affected by the photoabsorption of CO molecule. The equilibrium geometry and harmonic vibrational frequencies of Ne·CO and Ne·CO+ are calculated using cc-pVTZ basis sets at the QCISD level of theory. The results indicate that they are of a skewed T-shaped structure and show the configuration changes accompanying the ionization of Ne·CO complex. The parameters of thermo-chemistry of Ne·CO and Ne·CO+ are calculated using Gaussian-2 method, which provide information concerning the reduction of the ionization potentials of CO in the Ne·CO complex, relative to that of the bare molecule.
Photodesorption of CO ice

Abstract:At the high densities and low temperatures found in star forming regions, all molecules other than H2 should stick on dust grains on timescales shorter than the cloud lifetimes. Yet these clouds are detected in the millimeter lines of gaseous CO. At these temperatures, thermal desorption is negligible and hence a non-thermal desorption mechanism is necessary to maintain molecules in the gas phase. Here, the first laboratory study of the photodesorption of pure CO ice under ultra high vacuum is presented, which gives a desorption rate of 3E-3 CO molecules per UV (7-10.5 eV) photon at 15 K. This rate is factors of 1E2-1E5 larger than previously estimated and is comparable to estimates of other non-thermal desorption rates. The experiments constrains the mechanism to a single photon desorption process of ice surface molecules. The measured efficiency of this process shows that the role of CO photodesorption in preventing total removal of molecules in the gas has been underestimated.

Abstract:Ionization of gas-phase organic molecules such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) requires vacuum ultraviolet photons at wavelengths shorter than 200 nm (~6-9 eV). We present here for the first time that visible photons - accessible through sunlight - can cause photoionization of trapped PAHs in cryogenic water-ice, accounting for 4.4 eV less ionization energy than in the gas phase. This finding opens up new reaction pathways involving low-energy ionization in many environments where water and organic matter coexist. This include the interstellar medium, molecular clouds, protoplanetary disks, and planetary surfaces and atmospheres (including Earth).

Abstract:The radiative cooling of naphthalene dimer cations, (C 10 H 8 ) 2 + was studied experimentally through action spectroscopy using two different electrostatic ion-beam storage rings, DESIREE in Stockholm and Mini-Ring in Lyon. The spectral characteristics of the charge resonance (CR) band were observed to vary significantly with storage time of up to 30 seconds in DESIREE. In particular, the position of the CR band shifts to the blue, with specific times (inverse of rates) of 0.64 s and 8.0 s in the 0-5 s and 5-30 s storage time ranges, respectively. Such long-time scales evoke that the internal energy distribution of the stored ions evolves by vibrational radiative cooling, which is consistent with the absence of fast radiative cooling via recurrent fluorescence for (C 10 H 8 ) 2 + . Density Functional based Tight Binding calculations with local excitations and Configuration Interactions (DFTB-EXCI) were used to simulate the absorption spectrum for ion temperatures between 10 and 500 K. The evolution of the band width and position with temperature is in qualitative agreement with the experimental findings. Furthermore, these calculations yielded linear temperature dependencies for both the shift and the broadening. Combining the relation between the CR band position and the ion temperature with the results of the statistical model, we demonstrate that the observed blue shift can be used to determine the radiative cooling rate of (C 10 H 8 ) 2 + .

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in space and govern the interstellar chemistry. The two isomers of cyanonaphthalene (1-CNN and 2-CNN) were the first PAHs to be recently identified in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC-1). Their large abundance is attributed to high photostability with nearly no photofragmentation at photon energies above the ionization potential. Here, we show that at ambient light and at densities akin to dense molecular clouds and the upper atmosphere of planets and moons, 1-CNN could undergo extensive fragmentation through a new mechanism leading to daughter cations. On UV photoexcitation, at a photon energy way below the ionization threshold, 1-CNN monomers form photoexcited dimer units. Intermolecular Coulombic decay between the two photoexcited units of the dimer leads to ionization, and the subsequent molecular rearrangements form new daughter cations. These daughter cations could react further, contributing to rich bottom-up astrochemistry, and could play a pivotal role in developmental astrobiology. Photofragmentation in atmospheric and astrophysical environments is hitherto known to be unimolecular, while the present results point a pathway involving bimolecular photofragmentation.

Abstract:While photodissociation of molecular systems has been extensively studied, the photoinduced formation of chemical bonds remains largely unexplored. Especially for larger aggregates, the electronic and nuclear dynamics involved in the cluster formation process remain elusive. This limitation is rooted in difficulties to prepare reactants at well-defined initial conditions. Here, we overcome this hurdle by exploiting the exceptional solvation properties of helium nanodroplets. We load the droplets with Mg atoms and investigate the dynamical response of the formed Mg$_n$ aggregates to photoexcitation with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Beside the response expected for conventional Mg$_n$ clusters, consisting of a prompt signal rise and a decay characteristic for van der Waals bonds, the transient spectra also show a delayed photoelectron band peaking at 1.2 ps. This delayed signal rise is characteristic for nuclear dynamics and represents the transition of Mg$_n$ aggregates from a metastable, foam-like configuration, where Mg atoms are stabilized with a previously predicted interatomic spacing of 9.5 A, to a compact cluster. With global fitting analysis and ion-electron coincidence detection, the concerted electronic and nuclear dynamics can be tracked on a fs timescale. We find that cluster formation, proceeding with a ($450\pm180$) fs time constant, is accompanied by the population of highly-excited atomic states. We propose an energy pooling reaction in collisions of two or more excited Mg atoms during cluster formation as the mechanism leading to population of these high-lying Mg states. Additionally, conversion to kinetic energy through electronic relaxation leads to fragmentation and ejection of ionic cluster fragments from the He droplet. These results underline the potential of He droplets for time-resolved studies of bond formation and to uncover involved processes.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Quantifying electron trapping and transfer to small molecules is crucial for interfacial chemistry. In an astrochemical context, we study how NH3 clusters in both crystalline and amorphous forms can capture low-energy electrons to form ammoniated electrons. Electron affinities, vertical detachment energies, and vertical attachment energies were computed via ab initio static and dynamics simulations, (DFT, DLPNO-CCSD(T);AIMD), for (NH3)n clusters (n = 4, 5, 6, 8, 14, 23, and 38). Our results indicate that the clusters could trap and stabilize the unpaired electron which is always externally localized on the clusters. Interactions of the ammoniated electron clusters with astrochemically relevant molecules indicate that electron transfer to water and methanol are feasible, forming the radical anions (H2O)−· and (CH3OH)−·. The trapping of electrons by both crystalline and amorphous NH3 ices, and subsequent transfer to small molecules, highlights ‘astro-electrochemical’ reactions, and has implications for both astrochemistry as well as terrestrial cluster science.

Abstract:CO$_2$ is a major component of the icy mantles surrounding dust grains in planet and star formation regions. Understanding its photodesorption is crucial for explaining gas phase abundances in the coldest environments of the interstellar medium irradiated by vacuum-UV (VUV) photons. Photodesorption yields determined experimentally from CO$_2$ samples grown at low temperatures (T=15~K) have been found to be very sensitive to experimental methods and conditions. Several mechanisms have been suggested for explaining the desorption of CO$_2$, O$_2$ and CO from CO$_2$ ices. In the present study, the cross sections characterizing the dynamics of photodesorption as a function of photon fluence (determined from released molecules in the gas phase) and of ice composition modification (determined in situ in the solid phase) are compared for the first time for different photon flux conditions (from 7.3$\times 10^{12}$~photon/s/cm$^2$ to 2.2$\times 10^{14}$~photon/s/cm$^2$) using monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the VUV range (on the DESIRS beamline at SOLEIL). This approach reveals that CO and O$_2$ desorption are decorrelated from that of CO$_2$. CO and O$_2$ photodesorption yields depend on photon flux conditions and can be linked to surface chemistry. By contrast, the phodesorption yield of CO$_2$ is independent of the photon flux conditions and can be linked to bulk ice chemical modification, consistently with an indirect desorption induced by electronic transition (DIET) process.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely established as ubiquitous in the interstellar medium (ISM), but considering their prevalence in harsh vacuum environments, the role of ionisation in the formation of PAH clusters is poorly understood, particularly if a chirality-dependent aggregation route is considered. Here we report on photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on [4]helicene clusters performed with a vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron beamline. Aggregates (up to the heptamer) of [4]helicene, the smallest PAH with helical chirality, were produced and investigated with a combined experimental and theoretical approach using several state-of-the-art quantum-chemical methodologies. The ionisation onsets are extracted for each cluster size from the mass-selected photoelectron spectra and compared with calculations of vertical ionisation energies. We explore the complex aggregation topologies emerging from the multitude of isomers formed through clustering of P and M, the two enantiomers of [4]helicene. The very satisfactory benchmarking between experimental ionisation onsets vs. predicted ionisation energies allows the identification of theoretically predicted potential aggregation motifs and corresponding energetic ordering of chiral clusters. Our structural models suggest that a homochiral aggregation route is energetically favoured over heterochiral arrangements with increasing cluster size, hinting at potential symmetry breaking in PAH cluster formation at the scale of small grains.

Photochemistry of the PAH pyrene in water ice: the case for ion-mediated solid-state astrochemistry

Abstract:Context. Icy dust grains play an important role in the formation of complex inter- and circumstellar molecules. Observational studies show that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are abundantly present in the ISM in the gas phase. It is likely that these non-volatile species freeze out onto dust grains as well and participate in the astrochemical solid-state network, but experimental PAH ice studies are largely lacking. Methods. Near UV/VIS spectroscopy is used to track the in situ VUV driven photochemistry of pyrene containing ices at temperatures ranging from 10 to 125 K. Results. The main photoproducts of VUV photolyzed pyrene ices are spectroscopically identified and their band positions are listed for two host ices, \water and CO. Pyrene ionisation is found to be most efficient in \water ices at low temperatures. The reaction products, triplet pyrene and the 1-hydro-1-pyrenyl radical are most efficiently formed in higher temperature water ices and in low temperature CO ice. Formation routes and band strength information of the identified species are discussed. Additionally, the oscillator strengths of Py, Py^+ and PyH are derived and a quantitative kinetic analysis is performed by fitting a chemical reaction network to the experimental data. Conclusions. Pyrene is efficiently ionised in water ice at temperatures below 50 K. Hydrogenation reactions dominate the chemistry in low temperature CO ice with trace amounts of water. The results are put in an astrophysical context by determining the importance of PAH ionisation in a molecular cloud. The photoprocessing of a sample PAH in ice described in this manuscript indicates that PAH photoprocessing in the solid state should also be taken into account in astrochemical models.

Abstract:{CircumStellar Envelopes (CSEs) of stars are complex chemical objects for which theoretical models encounter difficulties in elaborating a comprehensive overview of the occurring chemical processes. Along with photodissociation, ion-neutral reactions and dissociative recombination might play an important role in controlling molecular growth in outer CSEs. The aim of this work is to provide experimental insights into pathways of photochemistry-driven molecular growth within outer CSEs to draw a more complete picture of the chemical processes occurring within these molecule-rich environments. A simplified CSE environment was therefore reproduced in the laboratory through gas-phase experiments exposing relevant gas mixtures to an Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) photon source. This photochemical reactor should ultimately allow us to investigate chemical processes and their resulting products occurring under conditions akin to outer CSEs. We used a recently developed EUV lamp coupled to the APSIS photochemical cell to irradiate CSE relevant gas mixtures of H$_2$, CO and N$_2$, at one wavelength, 73.6 nm. The detection and identification of chemical species in the photochemical reactor was achieved through in-situ mass spectrometry analysis of neutral and cationic molecules. We find that exposing CO-N$_2$-H$_2$ gas mixtures to EUV photons at 73.6 nm induces photochemical reactions that yield the formation of complex, neutral and ionic species. Our work shows that N$_2$H$^+$ can be formed through photochemistry along with highly oxygenated ion molecules like HCO$^+$ in CSE environments. We also observe neutral N-rich organic species including triazole and aromatic molecules. These results confirm the suitability of our experimental setting to investigate photochemical reactions and provide fundamental insights into the mechanisms of molecular growth in the outer CSEs.

Abstract:Context. In dense clouds, hydrogenation reactions on icy dust grains are key in the formation of molecules, like formaldehyde, methanol, and complex organic molecules (COMs). These species form through the sequential hydrogenation of CO ice. Although molecular hydrogen (H2) abundances can be four orders of magnitude higher than those of free H-atoms in dense clouds, H2 surface chemistry has been largely ignored; several laboratory studies show that H2 does not actively participate in non-energetic ice chemistry because of the high activation energies required. Aims. For the example of CO ice hydrogenation, we experimentally investigated the potential role of H2 molecules on the surface chemistry when energetic processing (i.e., UV photolysis) is involved. We test whether additional hydrogenation pathways become available upon UV irradiation of a CO:H2 ice mixture and whether this reaction mechanism also applies to other chemical systems. Methods. Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) experiments were performed at 8~20 K. A pre-deposited solid mixture of CO:H2 was irradiated with UV-photons. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) was used as an in situ diagnostic tool. Single reaction steps and possible isotopic effects were studied by comparing results from CO:H2 and CO:D2 ice mixtures. Results. After UV-irradiation of a CO:H2 ice mixture, two photon-induced products, HCO and H2CO, are unambiguously detected. The proposed reaction mechanism involves electronically excited CO in the following reaction steps: CO + h{\nu}->CO*, CO* + H2->HCO + H where newly formed H-atoms are then available for further hydrogenation reactions. The HCO formation yields have a strong temperature dependence for the investigated regime, which is most likely linked to the H2 sticking coefficient. Finally, the astronomical relevance of this photo-induced reaction channel is discussed.

Abstract:The astrochemistry of CO2 ice analogues has been a topic of intensive investigation due to the prevalence of CO2 throughout the interstellar medium and the Solar System, as well as the possibility of it acting as a carbon feedstock for the synthesis of larger, more complex organic molecules. In order to accurately discern the physico-chemical processes in which CO2 plays a role, it is necessary to have laboratory-generated spectra to compare against observational data acquired by ground- and space-based telescopes. A key factor which is known to influence the appearance of such spectra is temperature, especially when the spectra are acquired in the infrared and ultraviolet. In this present study, we describe the results of a systematic investigation looking into: (i) the influence of thermal annealing on the mid-IR and VUV absorption spectra of pure, unirradiated CO2 astrophysical ice analogues prepared at various temperatures, and (ii) the influence of temperature on the chemical products of electron irradiation of similar ices. Our results indicate that both mid-IR and VUV spectra of pure CO2 ices are sensitive to the structural and chemical changes induced by thermal annealing. Furthermore, using mid-IR spectroscopy, we have successfully identified the production of radiolytic daughter molecules as a result of 1 keV electron irradiation and the influence of temperature over this chemistry. Such results are directly applicable to studies on the chemistry of interstellar ices, comets, and icy lunar objects and may also be useful as reference data for forthcoming observational missions.

Abstract:Anionic carbonate CO3− has been found in interstellar space and the Martian atmosphere, but its production mechanism is in debate so far. To mimic the irradiation-induced reactions on icy micrograins in the Martian atmosphere and the icy shell of interstellar dust, here we report a laboratory investigation on the dissociative electron attachments to the molecular clusters of CO2. We find that anionic species (CO2)n−1O− and (CO2)n− (n = 2, 3, 4) are produced in the concerted reaction and further stabilized by the evaporative cooling after the electron attachment. We further propose a dynamics model to elucidate their competitive productions: the (CO2)n− yields survive substantially in the molecular evaporative cooling at the lower electron attachment energy, while the reactions leading to (CO2)n−1O− are favored at the higher attachment energy. This work provides new insights into physicochemical processes in CO2-rich atmospheres and interstellar space.
