Abstract:Diclofenac is one of the most popular over‐the‐counter non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug and poly(acrylic acid) is a frequently used as thickener, filler or stabilizer. For these reasons, they are common organic contaminants in raw wastewater. The purpose of the presented studies was to compare the adsorption capacity of three carbon‐silica composites ‐ metal‐free C/SiO2, iron‐enriched C/Fe/SiO2 and manganese‐enriched C/Mn/SiO2 towards diclofenac. The studies were carried out in single, and mixed systems in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) polymer. Adsorption, desorption and kinetics of the adsorption process were investigated. The concentration of diclofenac in the supernatants was determined using high‐performance liquid chromatography. The solids were also characterized with an ASAP apparatus using low‐temperature nitrogen desorption adsorption isotherms at liquid nitrogen temperature. In addition, potentiometric titrations and electrophoretic mobility measurements, as well as stability tests of the studied suspensions were carried out. The most efficient composite among investigated ones proved to be C/Fe/SiO2 removing diclofenac at the level of 46.68 mg/g for its initial concentration of 90 ppm. The results obtained clearly demonstrated that the carbon‐silica composites are effective in separation of drugs from aqueous solutions and can be successfully used in the future for the removal of organic pollutants from water environment.

Abstract:Diclofenac is a highly toxic anti-inflammatory detected in effluents and wastewater treatment plants. Adsorption is one of the most widely applied technologies to remove micropollutants using activated carbon, but requires a costly and inefficient separation stage, compromising adsorption. In this respect, a novel process is proposed based on ionic micellar flocculation-assisted adsorption (IMFA) using the surfactant sodium dodecanoate to increase adsorption capacity and facilitate phase separation. The efficiency of adsorption and IMFA was assessed based on a kinetic study, equilibrium isotherms, thermodynamic and kinetic separation properties. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second model indicating a process governed by ionic exchange between sodium diclofenac and the ions present in the activated carbon layers and dodecanoate, with velocity constants of 8.51 and 5.24 g.mg −1 .min −1 , respectively. Based on the equilibrium isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity obtained was 49.43 and 51.85 mg.g −1 in adsorption and IMFA, respectively, best represented by the Langmuir adsorption model, assuming adsorption on homogeneous surfaces in the form of monolayers. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the processes occurred spontaneously, exothermically and that randomness declines at the solid-solution interface. Sedimentation analysis showed that the higher the surfactant concentration the greater the compaction height, higher the decantation speed, and shorter the wastewater clarification time.

Abstract:As the world population continues to grow, there is also a rising concern regarding water pollution since this condition could negatively impact the supply of clean water. One of the most recent concerns is related to the pollution that comes from various pharmaceuticals, in particular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) since they have been industrially produced at large scale and can be easily purchased as an over-the-counter medicine. Diclofenac is one of the most popular NSAIDs because of its high-effectiveness, which leads to its excessive consumption. Consequently, its presence in water bodies is also continuously increasing. An adsorption process could then be employed as a highly effective method to address this issue. In comparison to other conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon, the use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as an alternative adsorbent is very attractive since it can offer various advantages such as tailorability and high adsorption capacity. In this study, the performance of three water-stable, free-base porphyrin MOFs assembled using zirconia-based nodes, namely MOF-525, MOF-545, and NU-902, for diclofenac adsorption was thoroughly investigated. Interestingly, although all three free-base porphyrin MOFs are assembled using the same building block and have a similar specific surface area (based on the experimental argon physisorption and calculation based on non-localized density functional theory), their diclofenac adsorption capacity is substantially different from one another. It is found that the highest diclofenac adsorption capacity is shown by MOF-525, which has maximum capacity around 792 mg g −1 . This is then followed by MOF-545 and NU-902 that have adsorption capacities around 591 and 486 mg g −1 , respectively. Some possible adsorption mechanisms are then thoroughly discussed that might contribute to this phenomenon. Lastly, their performance is also compared with other MOFs that are also studied for this purpose to show their performance superiority not only in terms of adsorption capacity but also their affinity towards the diclofenac molecule, which might be useful as an adsorption performance indicator in the real condition where the contaminant concentration is considerably low.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride modified by molybdenum trioxide (g-C3N4/MoO3) as a nanohybrid was synthesized by co-precipitation method. Here, g-C3N4/MoO3 nanohybrid was used for the first time as an adsorbent for the pharmaceutical drug, diclofenac, (an aqueous micropollutant) from water to mitigate its possible environmental toxic effects. Compared to pristine components, the nanohybrid exhibited better adsorptive removal of diclofenac. Adsorption was enhanced with increment in MoO3 content from 1 to 3 wt %; however further increment in MoO3 content resulted in lower adsorption capacity due to agglomeration of MoO3 particles over g-C3N4. 162 mg g−1 adsorption capacity was achieved for 300 mg L−1 diclofenac in solution with 1 g L−1 adsorbent at pH = 6. Adsorption of diclofenac over g-C3N4 /MoO3 followed pseudo 2nd order kinetics. Temkin, Langmuir, Dubinin Radushkevich and Freundlich isotherm models were applied on the experimental results concluding that diclofenac adsorption over g-C3N4/MoO3 followed the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption mechanism could be explained by the π–π interaction between aromatic rings of diclofenac and g-C3N4/MoO3 (3%) nanohybrid, which is also evident by the FTIR results. This study presents the facile fabrication of a 2nd generation adsorbent for the treatment of diclofenac contaminated water that may as well help achieve the removal of other micropollutants form water.

Application of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles for diclofenac adsorption: isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic investigation

Abstract:Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized to obtain a new efficient adsorbent for diclofenac sodium (DF) removal. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were applied to characterize the prepared adsorbent. These analyses revealed that adsorbent was successfully prepared with average particle diameter of about 50 nm and a BET surface area of 168.09 m2/g. The saturation magnetization value of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was found to be 24.90 emu/g, thus, adsorbent was efficiently separated from the solution by a facile and rapid magnetic separation process. The effect of adsorption time, amount of adsorbent, initial pH of the solution, initial diclofenac concentration and temperature on the removal of DF were evaluated. Also, the adsorption data were best fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamics studies suggested spontaneous and exothermic adsorption. The maximum diclofenac adsorption amount of the synthesized nanoadsorbent was 52.91 mg/g, which is higher than many recently studied adsorbents.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical and personal care products have received increasing more attention worldwide. Diclofenac was found to be one of the most detected pharmaceuticals in environmental matrixes and has acute toxicity against micro-living organisms. The present study aimed to investigate the application of magnetic gelatin modified peanut shell biochar (PBG) as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for the removal of sodium diclofenac (DCF) in the aqueous phase. Through SEM, EDS, BET, XRD, XPS, and FTIR characterisation techniques, the surface morphology, element components, specific surface area as surface functional groups of PBG were different from the pristine biochar. Batch adsorption experiment showed that PBG performed very high DCF adsorption capacity (qmax = 348.9 mg/g at pH = 6.5, T = 298 K). The adsorption capacity was significantly affected by pH solution with a decrease trend when pH >6. The experimental results could be satisfactorily fitted by Pseudo-second order kinetic model, and Temkin isotherm model. Thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process was non-spontaneous and endothermic. Some external agents such as humic acid and common ions exhibited a negative effect on the removal of DCF in the co-solute system. The adsorption capacity of the PBG adsorbent remained at 71.5% even after five cycles of regeneration, which demonstrated the stability and reusability for further removal of DCF. Besides, the proposed adsorption mechanism might contain electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds interactions, and π-π interactions. Considering the simple fabrication approach and the excellent adsorption performance, the PBG adsorbent can be evaluated as a potential material for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:In this work, a novel nanocellulose/alum/chitosan/polyethyleneimine biohybrid aerogel (NACPBA) beads adsorbent was successfully prepared to remove diclofenac sodium (DS) from wastewater. The NACPBA beads adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller. A possible adsorption mechanism was also discussed. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process was followed by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips isotherm model with the calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 321.3 mg/g on DS. It was much higher than most of the previously reported works. The adsorption capacity of NACPBA beads on DS was increased rapidly within 120 min, especially in the first 60 min. Furthermore, after five regeneration cycles, NACPBA still retained a good adsorption capacity of 103.7 mg/g with a removal efficiency of 50%. Moreover, 95.4% of DS was removed from river water (simulated 5 mg/L DS-contaminated wastewater). The possible adsorption mechanism was primarily governed by electrostatic attractions and hydrogen bond interactions.

Abstract:In this research, the adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium, one of the representative pharmaceuticals and personal care products, from aqueous solution using Fe3O4@MOF-100(Fe) magnetic microspheres was studied for the first time. The Fe3O4@MOF-100(Fe) microspheres exhibit strong magnetism and stability, which were observed as a core-shell structure. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@MOF-100(Fe) for diclofenac sodium can reach 377.36 mg L−1, which was higher than most of the adsorbents reported. The adsorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. And the adsorption equilibrium of DCF can be described with Langmuir isotherm. In the cycle experiment, Fe3O4@MOF-100(Fe) material performed high adsorption efficiency for low-concentration diclofenac sodium solution, and the removal rate can still reach 80% after 5 cycles of adsorption without desorption. The mechanisms including electrostatic interaction, H-bond interaction, and π-π interaction that coexisted in the adsorption processes would be of benefit to enhance the adsorption capacity. The Fe3O4@MOF-100(Fe) magnetic microspheres offer exciting opportunities for further application.

Abstract:Diclofenac sodium is a pharmaceutical that is extensively prescribed and consumed worldwide. Consequently, its release into water bodies has become a global concern, as it poses ecotoxicity, leading to severe public health and environmental problems. A literature research was performed to find a low-cost adsorbent with cationic characteristics that could be used to remove anionic contaminants from water, such as diclofenac sodium. In view of the above, this work aimed to investigate diclofenac sodium (DFS) removal using eucalyptus wood biochar (EWB) through the adsorption process. EWB was characterized by various techniques to obtain information regarding its surface charge, morphology and functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy displayed a porous surface, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed a notable number of functional groups on the EWB surface. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller presented an ABET of 619.35 m2 g–1 and the point of zero charge was 7.98. The influence of pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature of DFS were studied in batch tests. Box–Behnken design was used in surface response methodology to optimize the process conditions and obtain the maximum adsorption capacity, which was found to be 42.08 mg g–1, reached in 6 h, showing a good performance. Kinetic data best fit the pseudo-second-order model and equilibrium data were in better agreement with the Sips model, indicating monolayer adsorption. The thermodynamic study demonstrated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Considering the high efficiency evidenced in this study, low cost for production and the adsorbent being a renewable source, EWB is a promising material with the potential to remove DFS from water.

Abstract:The occurrence of pharmaceutical pollutants in aqueous media has increased where significant research is being conducted to eliminate these toxic compounds. In the present study, Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) modified Cuminum cyminum agri-waste (CCW) was prepared to investigate the removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) from aqueous solution in the batch process for the first time. Physical and chemical characterizations of as-prepared adsorbent were conducted using field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption, and point of zero charge analysis. Besides, the effect of the main parameters that affect the adsorption process, i.e., adsorbent dosage (0.25–6 g/L), contact time (0–300 min), initial DCF concentration (10–500 mg/L), and pH of the solution, were investigated. Furthermore, the resulted data were analyzed using various kinetic and isotherm models. The Pseudo-second-order model with R 2 = 0.9981 showed the highest agreement with kinetic behavior. Also, the maximum adsorption capacity of DCF is 93.65 mg/g, according to the Langmuir isotherm. In acidic media, the adsorption capacity reached the highest value (44.69 mg/g). As a result, this study revealed that the agri-waste material could be modified and, as a low-cost adsorbent, have promising adsorption potential to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from the aqueous solution. In this study, an innovative agricultural waste, Cuminum cyminum , has been used as low-cost material and modified with Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide cationic surfactant to remove diclofenac sodium (DCF) from aqueous solution in the batch process for the first time. TTAB-modified CCW exhibited an excellent adsorption capacity of 93.65 mg/g. Kinetic and equilibrium investigations were conducted with various models in detail.

Abstract:In this study, the synthesis of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (poly(ACN-co-AAc)) was carried out via redox polymerization, using sodium bisulphate (SBS) and potassium persulphate (KPS) as initiators. Subsequently, the resulting poly(ACN-co-AAc) was functionalized with ethanolamine (ETA) and ethylenediamine (EDA) to utilize as adsorbents for the removal of diclofenac from an aqueous solution. Both unfunctionalized and functionalized poly(ACN-co-AAc) were characterized using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The effects of pH, initial concentration of diclofenac solution, contact time, and adsorbent dosage were investigated during the adsorption process. The isotherm data were best fitted by the Langmuir model, indicating a mono-layered adsorption mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained from the Langmuir equation were higher for ETA-functionalized poly(ACN-co-AAc) at 120.5 mg/g, as compared to EDA-functionalized poly(ACN-co-AAc) at 80.6 mg/g. The experimental kinetic results showed that the pseudo-second-order model was a good fit for describing the adsorption rate of diclofenac for both ETA-functionalized poly(ACN-co-AAc) and EDA-functionalized poly(ACN-co-AAc), with R2 values of 0.9930 and 0.9906, respectively. This suggests that the chemisorption process is more favourable for the adsorption of diclofenac when using both types of adsorbents.

Abstract:The aim of this investigation was the adsorption of the diclofenac sodium (DS) from aqueous solution using its adsorption onto esparto grass (EG) modified with cationic surfactants such as Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and Benzyldimethylhexadecyl ammonium chloride to get DEG, CEG and BEG, respectively. The potentiality of these modified EG for the DS adsorption was studied. Batch mode analyses were conducted and the results showed that the maximum adsorption loading ( q max ) was 3.31 mg/g for DEF, 6.45 mg/g for CEG, and 10.30 mg/g for BEG. Based on the results of the isotherm models and the calculated error of each model, Langmuir isotherm model demonstrated the best agreement with the adsorption data. Kinetic studies showed that the data have the highest fitting to the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption mechanism mainly involves electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions and π–π interactions. Finally, the exhausted MEG s can be regenerated by diluted NaOH solution and reused.

Effect of different doses of ascorbic acid on thyroid activity in rats at different levels of dietary protein intake.

Abstract:Rats, which can synthesize vitamin C, react similarly to graded doses of ascorbic acid as guinea pigs. Low doses of ascorbic acid stimulate and high doses inhibit the thyroid activity of rats which are supplied with normal and high percentages of protein. The stimulatory effect of low doses of ascorbic acid on hyperactive thyroid of high protein fed animals is additive. Ascorbic acid has no significant effect on the thyroid of low protein fed animals (deficient diet supplied for 21 days). In the initial stages of protein deficiency (deficient diet supplied for 11 days) the effectiveness of vitamin C on thyroid of rats was still significant. Deiodinase enzyme activity of peripheral tissues is markedly reduced in animals supplied with 2% of protein for 21 days, but this effect is less intense in animals supplied with 2% of protein for 11 days.

Abstract:This study aimed to develop a novel adsorbent designed for the removal of diclofenac sodium (DS) from water. The synthesized adsorbent, a composite sponge known as guava seeds activated carbon loaded calcium alginate (GSAC@CA aerogel), was created through the combination of powdered activated carbon derived from guava seeds and loaded onto a calcium alginate hydrogel. Characterization through SEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, and XPS revealed a confirmed surface area of 738.82 m 2 /g. The investigation delved into assessing the influence of pH, initial DS concentration, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption of DS. Isotherm studies on adsorption suggested that a Langmuir model provided a good fit, indicating a monolayer adsorption process. Kinetic studies revealed a well-fitted pseudo-second-order model, shedding light on the dynamics of the reaction. The chemisorption nature was elucidated by the Dubinin-Radushkevich model, demonstrating an adsorption energy of 22.6 kJ/mol. These results affirm the potential of the GSAC@CA aerogel composite sponge as an efficient adsorbent for removing diclofenac sodium from water. Examination of the impact of temperature on the adsorption process revealed an endothermic behavior, indicating an increase in temperature. The positive change in entropy suggested the spontaneous nature of the reaction. Remarkably, the GSAC@CA aerogel composite sponge exhibited strong adsorption capabilities, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 489.97 mg/g. Across five consecutive cycles, the composite consistently demonstrated high-level adsorption, maintaining a removal efficiency of 87.77 %. The adsorption mechanism of diclofenac sodium (DS) on the GSAC@CA aerogel composite sponge was determined to encompass various processes, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, ion exchange, and electrostatic pore filling. Additionally, the adsorbent demonstrated successful regeneration over three cycles when applied to a real-world sample. The incorporation of the Box-Behnken design (BBD) introduced a strategic aspect to enhance adsorption outcomes, offering valuable insights for optimizing the adsorption process in practical applications.

Structure of diclofenac in an aqueous medium and its adsorption onto carbons: Molecular insights through simulation

Abstract:Diclofenac adsorption in aqueous media was investigated via molecular dynamics (MD), using protonated and deprotonated forms of diclofenac, optimized using density functional theory (DFT). The study focuses on the impact of the relative amount of protonated and deprotonated diclofenac in solution on molecular interactions in the bulk and on the adsorption mechanism on different carbon surfaces. The parameters under investigation were solution pH, diclofenac concentration in the bulk, and the presence or absence of ionic forms of water molecules. Solvent accessible surface area (SASA) calculations clearly illustrate that under pH ⩽ 2, the dominant protonated form of diclofenac tends to form aggregates, resulting in very low solubility in water. In contrast, these diclofenac aggregates do not form under pH ⩾ 6, leading to significantly higher solubility of diclofenac in water. The interactions between protonated and deprotonated forms of diclofenac are not significantly affected by the ionic forms of water molecules. Therefore, the primary parameter affecting aggregate size is the form of diclofenac molecules and their relative amount in aqueous solutions. The adsorption of diclofenac near a graphene sheet, single nanotube, and activated carbon, constructed using hybrid reverse Monte Carlo (HRMC), was examined using MD. For graphene sheets and single nanotubes, diclofenac molecules exhibit stronger adsorption capacities under strongly acidic conditions. For activated carbon, adsorption is improved at a pH equal to the compound's pKa. This indicates that both the porous texture of activated carbon (curvature, pore diameters, defects) and the ability of diclofenac molecules to adopt various conformations of protonated and deprotonated forms enhance diclofenac adsorption. The flexibility of the diclofenac molecule arises from possible rotation along the C-N-C axis. This pivot axis plays a critical role in enabling the formation of various conformers in bulk and near the adsorbents, ultimately leading to the creation of aggregates and double layers adjacent to the adsorbents. This phenomenon was analyzed using the Non-Covalent Index method based on the electronic density of diclofenac atoms.

Impact of an electronic medical record on quality of care in a primary care office.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine whether or not implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) in a primary care office is associated with an increase in completion of preventive care for a general population of adults and children, and for adults with diabetes mellitus. DESIGN Observational cohort study that compared the change in completion rate of recommended interventions from before to one year after implementation of an EMR. The EMR was designed for direct interaction by providers and included guidelines for preventive care as well as automated prompts for when interventions were due. MEASUREMENTS Patients were selected from a family medicine teaching practice in Delaware that implemented an EMR in July of 1998. We examined completion of recommended interventions for adults (influenza and pneumococcal immunizations, mammograms and cholesterol screening), children (hepatitis B and varicella immunizations) and adults with diabetes mellitus (monitoring for glycosylated hemoglobin and cholesterol, influenza and pneumococcal immunizations). Completion rates were compared from before to one year after EMR implementation. RESULTS The number of persons analyzed ranged from 117 for diabetes interventions to 1148 for cholesterol screening. Completion rates increased from before to after EMR implementation for all outcomes studied. The largest increases were seen for mammograms (28.7 percent to 52.5 percent), varicella immunizations (29.6 percent to 55.9 percent), glycosylated hemoglobin (53.0 percent to 80.3 percent) and influenza immunization for persons with diabetes (29.7 percent to 55.1 percent). CONCLUSION Implementation of a primary care EMR was associated with a substantial increase in completion of recommended preventive care across a broad spectrum of interventions and populations.

Abstract:The global presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources represents a burgeoning public health concern. Recent studies underscore the urgency of addressing this class of emerging contaminants. In this context, our work focuses on synthesizing a composite material, FexOy/MAF-32, through a streamlined one-pot reaction process, as an adsorbent for diclofenac, an emerging environmental contaminant frequently found in freshwater environments and linked to potential toxicity towards several organisms such as fish and mussels. A thorough characterization was performed to elucidate the structural composition of the composite. The material presents magnetic properties attributed to its superparamagnetic behavior, which facilitates the recovery efficiency of the composite post-diclofenac adsorption. Our study further involves a comparative analysis between the FexOy/MAF-32 and a non-magnetic counterpart, comprised solely of 2-ethylimidazolate zinc polymer. This comparison aims to discern the relative advantages and disadvantages of incorporating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in the contaminant removal process facilitated by a coordination polymer. Our findings reveal that even a minimal incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles substantially enhanced the composite's overall performance in pollutant adsorption.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency adsorbents and the exploration of their adsorption mechanisms are major challenges in environmental remediation. Herein, MIL-100 was prepared, characterized, and utilized for the adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) from aqueous solutions. A high monolayer adsorption capacity of 773 mg g(-1) was recorded. The adsorption mechanism was proposed based on different contributions of two types of pore structure of MIL-100 to the adsorption of DCF from aqueous solutions according to the experimental results and theoretical calculation. During adsorption process, DCF (5.2 x 7.4 x 10.3 angstrom) diffused through the free area of hexagonal pores (8.6 x 8.6 angstrom) into the cages of MIL-100, whilst it was adsorbed by the pentagonal pores (4.8 x 5.8 angstrom) preferentially. Internal mass transfer resistance, which was identified as one of the dominant rate-limiting steps by the mass transfer resistance kinetic models based on the Sips model, will be derived from the diffusion process, which was affected by the size-sieving effect of the pore structure of MIL-100. The successful diffusion of DCF into the interior of MIL-100 and the stable configuration between MIL-100 and DCF accounted for the high adsorption capacity. The capture of DCF into MIL-100 also resulted in the pore size distribution variation of adsorbent, which provided vital experimental evidence for the proposed mechanism. This study may offer deeper insights into other pollutants removal by metal-organic frameworks type adsorbents. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Regenerable Granular Carbon Nanotubes/alumina Hybrid Adsorbents for Diclofenac Sodium and Carbamazepine Removal from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:A novel granular carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/alumina (Al2O3) hybrid adsorbent with good sorption and regeneration properties was successfully prepared by mixing CNTs with surfactant Brij 35 and pseudo boehmite, followed by calcining to remove surfactant and form porous granules. Alumina binder increased the mechanical strength, hydrophilicity and porosity of the granular adsorbent, while the dispersed CNTs in the granular adsorbent were responsible for the sorption of diclofenac sodium (DS) and carbamazepine (CBZ). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the CNTs and Al2O3 were mixed well and the porous structure was formed in the granular adsorbent. The high surface area and appropriate pore size of granular CNTs/Al2O3 adsorbent were favorable for sorption. The sorption of DS decreased with increasing solution pH, while pH had little effect on CBZ sorption. The maximum sorption capacities of CBZ and DS on the CNTs/Al2O3 adsorbent were 157.4 and 106.5 mu mol/g according to the Langmuir fitting. Moreover, the spent CNTs/Al2O3 adsorbent can be thermally regenerated at 400 degrees C in air due to the thermal stability of CNTs. The removal of CBZ and DS changed a little in the initial reuse cycles and then kept relatively constant until tenth cycles. The adsorbed CBZ and DS were decomposed in the regeneration process. This regenerable adsorbent may find potential application in water or wastewater treatment for the removal of some micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) have shown promise in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) removal, but their recycling from solutions remains challenging. In this study, the development of a novel magnetic iCOF (M–TDiCOF) based on Schiff base reaction using amino functional group modified NH2-Fe3O4 as a magnetic source was reported. The resulting M–TDiCOF exhibits high adsorption capacity and fast kinetics, and can be easily separated and regenerated. Notably, M–TDiCOF achieves equilibrium adsorption of diclofenac sodium (DCF) within 30 min and shows a higher adsorption capacity under acidic conditions (371.27 mg/g, pH = 5). Kinetics and isotherms studies expose the adsorption of M–TDiCOF for DCF following the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The correlation between the physicochemical properties of NSAIDs and the adsorption capacity of M–TDiCOF was illustrated. Moreover, the Independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH) analysis revealed the interaction sites and the electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis highlighted the significance of electrostatic interactions. Finally, the adsorption mechanisms of M–TDiCOF are systematically confirmed. The abundant functional groups (guanidinium groups, hydroxyl groups, and aromatic groups) of M–TDiCOF facilitate electrostatic interactions, H-bond, π-π interactions, and ion exchange during water purification. Mung bean growth experiments verify the safety of M–TDiCOF system.
