Abstract:The potential of porous diatom silica shells as a naturally abundant low-cost sorbent for the removal of arsenic in aqueous solutions was investigated in a batch study. The objective of this work was to chemically modify the silica shells of a diatom Melosira sp. with bifunctional (thiol and amino) groups to effectively remove arsenic in its toxic As(III) form (arsenite) predominant in the aquatic environment. Sorption experiments with this novel sorbent were conducted under varying conditions of pH, time, dosage, and As(III) concentration. A maximum adsorption capacity of 10.99 mg g-1 was achieved within 26 h for a solution containing 12 mg L-1 As(III) at pH 4 and sorbent dosage of 2 g L-1. The functionalized diatom silica shells had a surface morphological change which was accompanied by increased pore size at the expense of reduced specific surface area and total pore volume. As(III) adsorption was best fitted with the Langmuir-Freundlich model, and the adsorption kinetic data using pore surface diffusion model showed that both the external (film) and internal (intraparticle) diffusion can be rate-determining for As(III) adsorption. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the thiol and amino groups potentially responsible for As(III) adsorption were grafted on the surface of diatom silica shells. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further verified that this unique sorbent proceeded via a chemisorption mechanism through the exchange between oxygen-containing groups of neutral As(III) and thiol groups, and through the surface complexation between As(III) and protonated nitrogen and hydroxyl groups. Results indicate that this functionalized bioadsorbent with a high As(III) adsorption capacity holds promise for the treatment of As(III) containing wastewater.

Abstract:Effective arsenic removal from highly laden industrial wastewater is an important but challenging task. Here, a combined coprecipitation/nano-adsorption process, with ferric chloride and calcium chloride as coprecipitation agents and polymer-based nanocomposite as selective adsorbent, has been validated for arsenic removal from tungsten-smelting wastewater. On the basis of operating optimization, a binary FeCl 3 (520 mg/L)–CaCl 2 (300 mg/L) coprecipitation agent could remove more than 93 % arsenic from the wastewater. The resulting precipitate has proved environmental safety based on leaching toxicity test. Fixed-bed column packed with zirconium or ferric-oxide-loaded nanocomposite was employed for further elimination of arsenic in coprecipitated effluent, resulting in a significant decrease of arsenic (from 0.96 to less than 0.5 mg/L). The working capacity of zirconium-loaded nanocomposite was 220 bed volumes per run, much higher than that of ferric-loaded nanocomposite (40 bed volumes per run). The exhausted zirconium-loaded nanocomposite could be efficiently in situ regenerated with a binary NaOH–NaCl solution for reuse without any significant capacity loss. The results validated the combinational coprecipitation/nano-adsorption process to be a potential alternative for effective arsenic removal from highly laden industrial effluent.
An impressive pristine biochar from food waste digestate for arsenic(V) removal from water: Performance, optimization, and mechanism

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion has become a global practice for valorizing food waste, but the recycling of the digestate (FWD) remains challenging. This study aimed to address this issue by utilizing FWD as a low-cost feedstock for Ca-rich biochar production. The results demonstrated that biochar pyrolyzed at 900 °C exhibited impressive As(V) adsorption performance without any modifications. Kinetic analysis suggested As(V) was chemisorbed onto CDBC9, while isotherm data conformed well to Langmuir model, indicating monolayer adsorption with a maximum capacity of 76.764 mg/g. Further analysis using response surface methodology revealed that pH value and adsorbent dosage were significant influencing factors, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation visualized the formation of ionic bonds between HAsO 4 2− and CaO(1 1 0) and Ca(OH) 2 (1 0 1) surfaces. This work demonstrated the potential of using FWD for producing Ca-rich biochar, providing an effective solution for As(V) removal and highlighting the importance of waste material utilization in sustainable environmental remediation.

Abstract:Inoculation of mice with Listeria monocytogenes intragastrically or by parenteral routes has not been reported to cause peritonitis. In this study, however, severe listerial peritonitis was induced in mice infected subcutaneously and treated intraperitoneally with cyclosporin A (Cs A) in an oil carrier. In both uninfected and listeria-infected mice, intraperitoneal administration of Cs A consistently produced overexpression of P-selectin in the peritoneal microvasculature and pyogranulomatous inflammation of the peritoneum, suggesting that Cs A causes endothelial damage. We suggest that in listeria-infected mice the non-specific irritant peritonitis induced by the intraperitoneal administration of Cs A results in transfer of listeria-infected phagocytes from the liver and spleen to the peritoneal microvasculature, producing metastatic infection.

Abstract:This study investigated the elemental composition and distribution of the Fe-based backwashing sludge (FBBS), and studied its adsorption behaviors and mechanisms towards arsenite [As(III)]. The characterization results of EDS, XPS, and XRF corroborated that the valuable constituents within FBBS are ferric oxhydroxide (gamma-FeOOH) and sulfate inter-layered Fe hydroxide [Fe(SO4)OH]. The zeta-potential results indicated a pH(ZPC) value of 7.7. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 18 h, and the kinetics data were well described by the Elovich and Power models due to the heterogeneous surfaces of FBBS. The isotherm experimental results suggested that the maximum adsorption amount of As(III) was around 59.7 mg/g (initial As(III) = 1-120 mg/L, pH = 7.0, T= 25 degrees C), which is higher than most of other low-cost adsorbents. The uptake of As(III) onto FBBS would increase with an increase in temperatures, inferring that it is an endothermic process. The optimal initial solution pH for As(III) removal was around pH 8.0. The release of sulfate from FBBS after As(III) adsorption implied the occurrence of ligand exchanges, while the mechanism of Fe(III) precipitation might be also involved. The spectra of FTIR and XPS revealed that the surface hydroxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of As(III), and the oxidation state of As(III) was not changed. Moreover, phosphates (>1 mM) could strongly inhibit the removal of As(III). The desorption results indicated that the release of As caused by alkali or phosphate eluent should be avoided for the scrutiny of waste landfill. Crown Copyright (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. Deep insight on mechanism and contribution of As(V) removal by thermal modification waste concrete powder

Abstract:Expanding the utilization strategy of waste concrete powder (WCP) is conducive to minimizing the environmental burden caused by construction & demolition wastes (C&DW). In this study, WCP prepared in the laboratory was thermally treated and used to remove As(V) from wastewater. Batch adsorption tests were implemented to explore the influence factors such as modification temperature (0-850 °C), pH (1.00-12.00), dosage (2-50 g/L), co-coexisting ions (SO42-, NO3-, Cl- and PO43-) and temperature (25-45 °C). Various methods including spectroscopic tests, Rietveld refinement and sequential extraction process were employed to examine the mechanisms and their contribution to As(V) removal. Results show that the As(V) removal capacity of WCP was slightly enhanced after treatment at 200 °C, the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process well. The maximum uptake capacity for As(V) calculated by Langmuir model at 25, 35 and 45 °C were 31.89, 25.56 and 17.42 mg/g respectively, and the removal rate reached a maximum of 95.37% (C0 = 100 mg/L). Thermodynamically, the As(V) elimination was exothermic and spontaneous. The ettringite produced by rehydration of WCP proved to be essential for As(V) removal. Electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation and ion exchange were identified to be the main mechanisms of As(V) adsorption. This study confirmed the potential of WCP in removing As(V) from wastewater and provided a new insight into the removal mechanisms.

Abstract:Adsorption methods have been widely used in wastewater treatment due to its high removal efficiency, easy operation and handling, economic efficiency and little secondary pollution to the environment. In this paper, a high-iron containing incineration sewage sludge ash (ISSA) was modified by combined acid leaching and precipitation processes to improve its adsorption capacity of As(V). The effects of pH, time, temperature and ionic strength on the adsorption of As(V) were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. The results indicated that iron (mainly present as hematite) in the ISSA was rearranged to Fe(SO4)OH. The modified ISSA showed an excellent adsorption potential for As(V) under acidic conditions and the adsorption capacity was around 9 times of the unmodified ISSA at pH 2-3. The adsorption process was fast during the first 2 hours and reached an equilibrium at around 6h. The Freundlich model could well fit the adsorption isotherm data, the presence of NO3- and Cl- had a negligible influence on the As(V) removal by the modified ISSA, while PO43- and SO42- could significantly suppress As(V) removal via competitive adsorption. After 3 cycles of regeneration, the modified ISSA still showed a satisfying adsorption capacity. As(V) was removed by the modified ISSA mainly through ligand exchange reaction with hydroxyl oxygen (OH-) to form inner-sphere complexes. Therefore, the modified ISSA can be a promising material for As(V) removal from wastewater in particular due to the waste recycling potential.

Abstract:High-level arsenic-containing wastewater (HAW) causes serious environmental pollution. Chemical precipitation is the most widely used technology for treating HAW. However, chemical precipitation generates huge amounts of hazardous solid wastes, which leads to secondary pollution. In this work, an efficient method, producing no secondary pollution was developed for one-step complete removal of As(V) from HAW using a hazardous solid waste namely arsenic-bearing gypsum (ABG). After the treatment, ABG was transformed into highly stable and environment-friendly mineral Johnbaumite. Meanwhile, the arsenic concentration in the wastewater decreased from 10,000 mg L-1 to 0.22 mg L-1 under optimized hydrothermal conditions (ABG dosage of 50 g L-1, solution pH of 13.5, temperature of 150 °C for 12 h). The mechanism mainly included the following processes: (i) The phase transformation of ABG resulted in the release of calcium and hydrogen arsenate ions in ABG, (ii) Hydrogen arsenate ions transformed into arsenate ions in alkaline environment, and (iii) Under alkaline conditions, calcium ions combined with arsenate ions to form Johnbaumite, whereas the hydrothermal conditions accelerated the crystal growth of Johnbaumite. This study provides a new idea for the synchronous treatment of toxic heavy metal-containing wastewaters and hazardous solid wastes.

Abstract:Recently, removal of arsenic from different industrial effluent discharged using simple, efficient and low-cost technique has been widely considered. In this study, removal of arsenic (As) from real wastewater has been studied employing modified bio-oxidation followed by adsorptive filtration method in a novel continuous flow through the reactor. This method includes biological oxidation of ferrous to ferric ions by immobilized Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria on granulated activated carbon (GAC) in fixed bed bio-column reactor with the adsorptive filtration unit. Removal efficiency was optimized regarding the initial flow rate of media and ferrous ions concentration. Synthetic wastewater sample having different heavy metal ions such as Arsenic (As), Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb) and Manganese (Mn) were also used in the study. The structural and surface changes occurring after the treatment process were scrutinized using FT-IR and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. The finding showed that not only arsenic can be removed considerably in the bioreactor system, but also removing efficiency was much more (<90%) for other heavy metals in real wastewater sample. The results from TCPL test confirms that solid spent media was non-hazardous and can be safely disposed of. This study verified that combination of bio-oxidation with adsorptive filtration method improves the removal efficiency of arsenic and other heavy metal ions in wastewater sample.

Abstract:Arsenic is among the most toxic elements and it commonly exists in water as arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) ions. As(III) removal often requires a pre-oxidation or pH adjustment step and it is a challenge to adsorb As(III) at circumneutral pH. In this study, iron-aluminium double hydrous oxides were synthesized and incorporated into cryogels. The resulting composite cryogels were evaluated for As(III) adsorption. Initial experiments indicated that the adsorbent showed similar adsorption kinetics for both As(V) and As(III) ions. The adsorption of As(III) best fit the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was 24.6 mg/g. Kinetic modeling indicated that the mechanism of adsorption was chemisorption, making the adsorbent-adsorbate interactions independent of charge and hence allowing the adsorbent to function equally efficient across pH 4-11. A Swedish smelting wastewater was used to evaluate the adsorption performance in continuous mode. The studies showed that the adsorbent was successful in reducing the arsenic concentrations below the European Union emission limit (0.15 mg/l) in a smelting wastewater collected after two precipitation processes. The arsenic removal was obtained without requiring a pH adjustment or a pre-oxidation step, making it a potential choice as an adsorbent for As(III) removal from industrial wastewaters.

Abstract:Arsenic is prevalent in many natural systems and poses a great risk to human health. In this respect, a novel composite material with efficient removal of As(V) was reported, namely ZIF-8@CNDs, consisting of zeolite imidazolium framework-8 (ZIF-8) with a high surface area and carbon nanodots (CNDs) with abundant active groups. The synthesis of the nanostructure and the adsorption efficiency for As(V) were confirmed through chemical, morphological, phase analysis, specific surface area and point of zero charge. ZIF-8@CNDs was applied for the removal of As(V) in batch experiments. The results revealed that ZIF-8@CNDs exhibited the highest removal efficiencies for As(V) (94.12%), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 57.80 mg/g at the optimum conditions as follows: pH 6, 0.1 g/L ZIF-8@CNDs, 180 min, 298 K and a 1 mg/L initial As(V) concentration. The As(V) adsorption process by ZIF-8@CNDs followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and exhibited optimal fitting with the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. The adsorption mechanism of As(V) by ZIF-8@CNDs was proposed by analyzing macroscopic data and microscopic morphology. Electrostatic attraction and multifunctional groups (amino, carboxyl, amine and hydroxyl dissociable groups) played critical roles during the As(V) removal process. Overall, this investigation demonstrated ZIF-8@CNDs is a promising adsorbent to remove As(V) from polluted water and has great potential in remediating wastewater contained by organic arsenic and inorganic arsenic pollution.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles were deposited on Douglas fir biochar (Fe 3 O 4 /DFBC) using aqueous, NaOH-induced chemical co-precipitation from Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ salt solutions. Fe 3 O 4 /DFBC was used to remediate As(V)-contaminated water. Kinetics and isotherms were studied. pH 5 was selected as the optimized pH due to low iron leaching and closeness to groundwater pH. Adsorption equilibrium was reached after 3 h, 2 h, and 1 h for 0.5, 5, and 50 mg/L initial As(V) concentrations, respectively. Adsorption was endothermic, and the Langmuir capacity was 6.33 mg/g at 25 °C. Ionic strength, impacts of Fe 3 O 4 /DFBC particle size, and competitive ion/molecule effects during As(V) adsorption were studied. Continuous-flow fixed-bed column breakthrough studies performed at 0.5, 5, and 50 mg/L of As(V) at pH 5 exhibited maximum capacities of 3.47, 3.99, and 3.72 mg/g, respectively. Aqueous potassium phosphate was used successfully for column regeneration. Fe 3 O 4 /DFBC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Mössbauer spectroscopy before and after As(III) and As(V) adsorption. Mössbauer found the "Fe 3 O 4 " was composed of several phases. A key target was the study of simultaneous toxic As(III) adsorption and its transformation to As(V) from pH 1–13. The highest removal of As(III) and oxidized As(V) was obtained at pH 3. The relationship between iron leaching and pH was investigated and the pH-dependent surface adsorption was monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) from pH 1 to 13. One goal of this study was to enhance the understanding of the adsorption characteristics needed for initial scaling of a treatment facility that can efficiently remediate arsenic-contaminated wastewater. Experiments were conducted using batch and fixed bed continuous flow columns to optimize adsorption process parameters under various circumstances and solution matrices. Another goal was to further establish the surface structures of the chemisorbed arsenates versus pH.

Abstract:Arsenic (As), a carcinogenic heavy metal, is a toxic environmental pollutant that threatens human and environmental health. Here, a cost-effective and high-performance Fe-based calcium silicate hydrate (Fe-CSH) was synthesized through a one-step alkaline activation process using steel slag as an in situ Ca and Fe source to treat As(V)-containing solutions. The synthesized Fe-CSH exhibited a flower-like structure with numerous interleaving nanosheets, which provided abundant adsorption sites. More importantly, this compound could remove large quantities of As(V) from wastewater, achieving maximum adsorption capacities of up to 141.5 mg/g at a pH of 5. The adsorption kinetics were consistent with a Langmuir isotherm model and followed pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion kinetics. Thermodynamics analyses indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and feasible. XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XPS analyses indicated that the outstanding adsorption performance of the Fe-CSH could be due to the release of Ca2+ and OH– from this material. The released Ca2+ reacted with arsenate ions via coprecipitation, whereas OH– promoted the generation of Fe hydroxide from iron ions, which adsorb As(V) by forming stable bidentate surface complexes. Ultimately, a potential process was proposed for the remediation of As-containing wastewater using hierarchically structured Fe-CSH derived from steel slag. The “trash-to-treasure” strategy implemented for the repurposing of steel slag and the remediation of As-contaminated wastewater are both conducive to sustainable development.

Abstract:In this study, we examined the sorption of arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) to Japanese oak wood-derived biochar (OW-BC) in aqueous solutions, and determined its efficiency to remove As from As-contaminated well water. Results revealed that, among the four sorption isotherm models, Langmuir model showed the best fit to describe As(III) and As(V) sorption on OW-BC, with slightly greater sorption affinity for As(V) compared to As(III) (QL=3.89 and 3.16mgg-1; R2=0.91 and 0.85, respectively). Sorption edge experiments indicated that the maximum As removal was 81% and 84% for As(III)- and As(V)-OW-BC systems at pH7 and 6, respectively, which decreased above these pH values (76-69% and 80-58%). Surface functional groups, notably OH, COOH, CO, CH3, were involved in As sequestration by OW-BC, suggesting the surface complexation/precipitation and/or electrostatic interaction of As on OW-BC surface. Arsenic K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy indicated that 36% of the added As(III) was partially oxidized to As(V) in the As(III) sorption experiment, and in As(V) sorption experiment, 48% of As(V) was, albeit incompletely, reduced to As(III) on OW-BC surface. Application of OW-BC to As-contaminated well water (As: 27-144μgL-1; n=10) displayed that 92 to 100% of As was depleted despite in the presence of co-occurring competing anions (e.g., SO42-, CO32-, PO43-). This study shows that OW-BC has a great potential to remove As from solution and drinking (well) water. Overall, the combination of macroscopic sorption data and integrated spectroscopic and microscopic techniques highlight that the fate of As on biochar involves complex redox transformation and association with surface functional moieties in aquatic systems, thereby providing crucial information required for implication of biochar in environmental remediation programs.
Fe(II) bio-oxidation mediates red mud transformations to form Fe(III)/Al (hydr)oxide adsorbent for efficient As(V) removal under acidic conditions

Abstract:Acidic wastewater rich in arsenic (As) is one of the most hazardous types of liquid waste and has caused severe environmental pollution over the past few decades due to a lack of cost-effective and environment-friendly disposal technologies. Here, a new strategy for the efficient immobilization of As(V) under acidic conditions is presented. The approach uses Fe(II) bio-oxidation by the acidophilic bacterium Sulfobacillus (Sb.) thermosulfidooxidans to transform red mud into a low-cost Fe(III)/Al (hydr)oxide adsorbent for As(V) removal. The mechanisms of the formation of the adsorbent and subsequent adsorption of As onto its surface were investigated, together with the relationship between the adsorbent structure and As adsorption efficiency. The [Fe(II)]ini greatly affected the growth of Sb. thermosulfidooxidans, Fe/Al speciation, and surface structure of the adsorbent, as well as the As removal capacity. The aluminosilicates in RM provided numerous sites for Fe(III) adsorption, inhibiting the transformation of amorphous Fe(III) (hydr)oxides to crystalline Fe(III) minerals. The newly formed Fe(OH)3 and schwertmannite played a dominant role in As(V) immobilization. The transformation of the amorphous Fe(III) (hydr)oxides to more crystalline Fe(III) minerals, caused by an excess of Fe(II) (2 ≤ [Fe(II)]ini ≤ 4 g/L), resulted in a significant decrease in the As adsorption capacity (reduce ratio: 29.3–53.5%). The Fe(III)/Al (hydr)oxide adsorbent bio-synthesized under [Fe(II)]ini of 1 g/L showed the highest As(V) adsorption efficiency (89.9 mg/g; at pH 2.0), which was significantly higher than that of the original RM under the same conditions (5.7 mg/g). The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models.

Abstract:The regimes for the applicability of various theoretical models for the stability of a {ital Z} pinch under pressure balance are shown to be clearly delineated in a diagram of ln({ital I}{sup 4}{ital a}) vs ln{ital N}, where {ital I}, {ital a}, and {ital N} are the current, pinch radius, and line density, respectively. In particular, the most unstable regime where ideal magnetohydrodynamics applies is shown to be restricted to a small-wedge-shaped region bounded by resistive, viscous, anisotropic, and finite Larmor radius effects. Recent experimental results of anomalous stability can be interpreted in terms of resistive or large-ion Larmor-radius effects.

Abstract:Steel rolling sludge (SRS) is the by-product of metallurgical industry with abundant iron content, which needs to be utilized for producing high value-added products. Herein, cost-effective and highly adsorbent α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were prepared from SRS via a novel solvent-free method and applied to treat As(III/V)-containing wastewater. The structure of the prepared nanoparticles was observed to be spherical with a small crystal size (12.58 nm) and high specific surface area (145.03 m 2 /g). The nucleation mechanism of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and the effect of crystal water were investigated. More importantly, compared with the traditional methods of preparation cost and yield, this study was found to have excellent economic benefits. The adsorption results indicated that the adsorbent could effectively remove arsenic over a wide pH range, and the optimal performance of nano adsorbent for As(III) and As(V) removal was observed at pH 4.0–9.0 and 2.0–4.0, respectively. The adsorption process was consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal model. The maximum adsorption capacity (q m ) of adsorbent for As(III) and As(V) was 75.67 mg/g and 56.07 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles exhibited great stability, and q m remained at 64.43 mg/g and 42.39 mg/g after five cycles. Particularly, the As(III) was removed by forming inner-sphere complexes with the adsorbent, and it partially oxidized to As(V) during this process. In contrast, the As(V) was removed by electrostatic adsorption and reaction with –OH on the adsorbent surface. Overall, resource utilization of SRS and the treatment of As(III)/(V)-containing wastewater in this study are in line with the current developments in the environmental and waste-to-value research.

Abstract:Biological oxidation is a low-carbon technology for the treatment of As-containing gold ores, but it causes a large amount of acidic As-containing wastewater that is harmful to the environment. This paper proposed a novel, eco-friendly method to treat this wastewater. Thermodynamic analysis, H2PO2− reduction, and wastewater recycling tests were conducted. Thermodynamic analysis indicates the feasibility of the reduction of As(V)/As(III) by H2PO2− or H3PO2 to As0 under acidic conditions. Experimental results confirmed the thermodynamic prediction and showed that H2PO2− could efficiently convert the As (i.e., As(V)/As(III)) in the wastewater to high value-added As0. Under the optimal conditions, 99.61% of As precipitated out, and the obtained As0 had a high purity of 98.5%. Kinetic results showed that the reaction order of H2PO2− concentration was 0.6399, and the activation energy of the H2PO2− reduction process was 34.33 kJ/mol, which is indicative of a mixed-controlled process (20–40 kJ/mol). Wastewater recycling results showed that after recovering As, the wastewater could be reused as a bacterial culture medium. Based on the thermodynamic analysis and experimental and analytical results, hypophosphite reduction mechanisms for removing and recovering As from its acidic wastewater were proposed. The results presented in this paper suggest the feasibility of this one-step H2PO2− reduction approach, which may be promising in treating acidic As-containing wastewater.
