Abstract:Midpalatal corticotomy-assisted rapid maxillary expansion (MCRME) is a minimally invasive treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency (MTD) in young adults. However, the effect of MCRME on respiratory function still needs to be determined. In this study, we evaluated the changes in maxillary morphology and the upper airway following MCRME using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Twenty patients with MTD (8 males, 12 females; mean age 20.55 years) had cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images taken before and after MCRME. The CBCT data were used to construct a three-dimensional (3D) upper airway model. The upper airway flow characteristics were simulated using CFD, and measurements were made based on the CBCT images and CFD. The results showed that the widths of the palatal bone and nasal cavity, and the intermolar width were increased significantly after MCRME. The volume of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx increased significantly, while there were no obvious changes in the volumes of the oropharynx and hypopharynx. CFD simulation of the upper airway showed that the pressure drop and maximum velocity of the upper airway decreased significantly after treatment. Our results suggest that in these young adults with MTD, increasing the maxillary width, upper airway volume, and quantity of airflow by MCRME substantially improved upper airway ventilation.

Abstract:Purpose: The anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) volume will decrease over time after surgery. We measured and identified the risk factors for postoperative volume changes in the ALTF. Materials and Methods: We designed and performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who had undergone reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects using ALTFs at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from June 2012 to December 2018. We measured the volume of the ALTFs at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively; the flap volume at 1 month postoperatively was taken as the baseline. The primary outcome variables were the residual ALTF rates at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively, defined as the ratio between the present volume at each month and at baseline. The primary predictor variables were the clinical variables that might be associated with ALTF volume loss. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed, and the P value for statistical significance was set at <= .05. Results: The sample included 70 subjects with a mean age of 53.8 years (46 men and 24 women). The postoperative residual rates at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months were 72.3, 69.0, 67.9, and 68.7%, respectively, of the baseline volume. The use of postoperative radiotherapy (P<.01) and low body mass index (BMI; P=.006) were significantly associated with postoperative ALTF volume loss. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that ALTF volume shrinkage mainly occurs within 6 months postoperatively and that postoperative radiotherapy and a low BMI are risk factors for volume loss. Overcorrection should be performed to account for the shrinkage of ALTFs, and postoperative nutrition management is important to avoid ALTF volume loss. Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:Recent systematic reviews have reported resorption of bone grafts after augmentation, but the influencing factors are numerous and uncertain. Different brands of bone graft and other factors may affect the bone formation effect after sinus floor augmentation.PURPOSE:The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the graft material height changes after sinus floor augmentation with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to investigate the potential influencing factors related to graft resorption.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Four midsagittal cut CBCT images of 157 posterior maxillary implants after maxillary sinus floor elevation by using the lateral window approach with bone grafts from 116 patients were obtained. Four CBCT scans had been performed immediately (T0), 6 months (T1) and 12 months after bone grafting (T2), and 1.5 to 2 years after treatment (T3), and the distance between the implant platform and the grafted mucosa of the maxillary sinus floor was measured at 3 locations. Correlation coefficients of these parameters were calculated. A linear mixed model was used to investigate potential factors influencing graft height reduction, including the patient's sex, age, smoking status, periodontal status, graft brand, implant site, implant level, placement time, and residual bone height.RESULTS:Mean ±standard deviation graft height at the mesial side of the implant (MeGH) was significantly decreased by 0.32 ±0.88 mm in the first 6 months, was gradually reduced after 6 months (0.26 ±0.43 mm), and then 1 to 2 years later increased to 0.39 ±0.97 mm. The changes in graft height at the center of the implant (CeGH) and graft height at the distal side (DiGH) groups were similar to those in the MeGH group. A significantly positive correlation was found among the height alterations in 3 locations (rs=0.954, P<.001). The linear mixed model showed that smoking was more likely to cause graft height reduction in MeGH (P=.034).CONCLUSIONS:Graft height significantly decreased after maxillary sinus augmentation over 1 to 2 years. Smoking had a negative effect on graft height changes, while the 2 brands of graft and other factors had no significant effect.
Quantitative Changes of Upper Airway in Class III Patients Undergoing Bimaxillary Surgery after One-Year Follow-Up: a Retrospective Study

Abstract:AbstractBackgroundBimaxillary surgery is often performed for class III malocclusion, and its complex influence on the upper airway has been well considered. The aim of this research was to provide a scaled formula between upper airway volume changes and bone movements in Class III patients after orthognathic surgery.Materials and methodsUsing a retrospective study design, the investigators enrolled a total of 30 class III malocclusion patients who were undergoing bimaxillary surgery as the study subjects. The subjects included 15 males and 15 females, and their average age was 23.3 ± 3.4 years. CBCT (cone beam tomography) was performed both before and one year after the surgery for each patient. The changes in the soft palate, tongue and upper airway were measured by using CBCT data that was collected before and after surgery. 3D superimposition of CBCT was performed to calculate three-dimensional jaw movements. A multiple regression analysis was used to calculate the quantitative relationship between airway volume changes and jaw movements.ResultsThe nasopharynx airway volume was observed to be increased by 1064.0 ± 1336.2 mm3, whereas the retropalatal and retroglossal airway volumes were observed to be decreased by 1399.0 ± 2881.6 mm3and 1433.8 ± 3043.4 mm3, respectively, after the surgery. One millimetre forward and downward movements of the PNS resulted in increases of 626.90 mm3and 392.18 mm3in nasopharynx airway volume, respectively. Moreover, one millimetre retrogression of the B point caused decreases of 314.6 mm3and 656.6 mm3in the retropalatal and retroglossal airway volume, respectively. The changes in the soft palate contributed to the decrease in the retropalatal airway volume, whereas the tongue compensated for the decrease in the retroglossal airway volume.ConclusionThe movements of the PNS and B points could be used to predict upper airway volumetric changes in Class III patients after maxillary advancement and mandibular setback.
A Comparative Study of Three-Dimensional Airway Changes after Fibula Flap Reconstruction for Benign and Malignant Tumours in the Anterior Mandible

Abstract:Surgical treatment of tumours in the anterior mandible and surrounding tissues may result in defects which can be restored by a fibula free flap. The upper airway may change during this process. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate upper airway changes after fibula free flap reconstruction. A total of 37 patients who underwent anterior mandibulectomy and fibula free flap reconstruction between 2012 and 2020 were recruited. Patients with benign and malignant tumours involving the anterior mandible were included. Spiral computed tomography was performed 1 week preoperatively, 1 week postoperatively, and at > 1 year (range 12-23 months) after surgery. Cross-sectional areas and volumes of the upper airway were measured. Data were analysed by two-way analysis of variance. The upper airway in the malignant tumour group showed an increasing trend, especially at the soft palate and tongue base levels (P < 0.01). In the benign tumour group, the upper airway showed no significant changes. The location of the minimum cross-sectional area moved downwards in both groups, and the area increased in the malignant tumour group during long-term follow-up. Upper airway obstruction is less likely to occur in the long term after surgical resection of anterior mandible malignancies and fibula free flap reconstruction.

Abstract:Introduction The objective of this study was to investigate the 2-year postoperative change and influencing factors of the upper airway after mandibular advancement with maxillary setback surgery for patients with a skeletal Class II relationship. Methods Fifty-seven participants who underwent mandibular advancement with maxillary setback surgery were enrolled consecutively. Cone-beam computed tomography was performed preoperatively, 3 months postoperatively (T1), and 2 years (T2) postoperatively. All parameters were measured using Dolphin Imaging software (Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif). Results The total volume (V), minimum cross-sectional area (CSA min ), and glossopharynx increased significantly in both the short-term (V, 13.33%; CSA min , 33.03%; glossopharynx, 26.73%) and long-term (V, 10.19%; CSA min , 23.18%; glossopharynx, 18.27%) after the surgery. Mandibular advancement, mandibular width increase, preoperative CSA min , and body mass index (BMI) significantly affected 2-year postoperative V increases. Mandibular advancement and BMI significantly affected 2-year postoperative glossopharynx increases. Backward movement of point PNS may lead to a reduction of the nasopharynx; however, downward movement of point PNS, upward movement of point A, and increased maxillary width may compensate for this effect by increasing the likelihood of the nasopharynx opening. Furthermore, mandibular body length at T1 is positively associated with relapse rate ([T2 − T1] / T1) of V and CSA min . Conclusions Mandibular advancement amount, mandibular width increase, preoperative CSA min , and BMI are the 4 factors for long-term V changes. Patients with a longer mandibular body length might have a lower relapse rate.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objectives To compare upper airway changes following bimaxillary surgery for correction of Class III deformity between patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) and to compare the preoperative and postoperative upper airway among patients with UCLP and BCLP to healthy controls. Materials and Methods Sixty adults with CLP-related skeletal Class III deformity (30 UCLP and 30 BCLP) who consecutively underwent bimaxillary surgery were studied retrospectively. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed before and after surgery to measure upper airway and movements of facial skeletal and surrounding structures. CBCT images from 30 noncleft skeletal Class I adults, matched by age, gender, and body mass index and without surgical intervention, served as controls. Results After surgery, the volume of the nasopharynx increased in patients with CLP (both P < .001). Patients with CLP did not differ from controls in postoperative volume of the nasopharynx or oropharynx. However, the nasal cavity differed significantly between patients with CLP and controls (P < .001). Conclusions After bimaxillary surgery, the nasal cavity of patients with CLP differed significantly compared with the controls. Volumes of the nasopharynx and oropharynx did not differ between patients with CLP after surgery and controls.

Abstract:ObjectiveWhether the orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction and maximum anchorage in adults will lead to a narrowed upper airway remains under debated. The study aims to investigate the airway changes after orthodontic extraction treatment in adult patients with Class II and hyperdivergent skeletal malocclusion.Materials and MethodsThis retrospective study enrolled 18 adults with Class II and hyperdivergent skeletal malocclusion (5 males and 13 females, 24.1 +/- 3.8 years of age, BMI 20.33 +/- 1.77 kg/m(2)). And 18 untreated controls were matched 1: 1 with the treated patients for age, sex, BMI, and skeletal pattern. CBCT images before and after treatment were obtained. DOLPHIN 11.7 software was used to reconstruct and measure the airway size, hyoid position, and craniofacial structures. Changes in the airway and craniofacial parameters from pre to post treatment were assessed by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Mann-Whitney U test was used in comparisons of the airway parameters between the treated patients and the untreated controls. Significant level was set at 0.05.ResultsThe upper and lower incisors retracted 7.87 mm and 6.10 mm based on the measurement of U1-VRL and L1-VRL (P < 0.01), while the positions of the upper and lower molars (U6-VRL, and L6-VRL) remained stable. Volume, height, and cross-sectional area of the airway were not significantly changed after treatment, while the sagittal dimensions of SPP-SPPW, U-MPW, PAS, and V-LPW were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and the morphology of the cross sections passing through SPP-SPPW, U-MPW, PAS, and V-LPW became anteroposteriorly compressed (P < 0.001). No significant differences in the airway volume, height, and cross-sectional area were found between the treated patients and untreated controls.ConclusionsThe airway changes after orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction and maximum anchorage in adults are mainly morphological changes with anteroposterior dimension compressed in airway cross sections, rather than a decrease in size.

Abstract:Introduction: The purposes of this study were to assess the effects of maxillary protraction therapy on the pharyngeal airways in patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) 3 dimensionally. Methods: Eighteen patients with repaired UCLP and anterior crossbite (ages, 10.4 +/- 1.3 years) were enrolled in the study group. Hyrax appliances and reverse headgears were used. Cone-beam computed tomography volume scans were taken before and immediately after treatment. Fourteen patients (ages, 9.6 +/- 1.7 years) with UCLP who did not receive orthopedic treatment served as the control group. The volumes of the pharyngeal airways, cross-sectional areas, sagittal diameters, and transversal diameters of 3 levels of airway cross-section were measured. Results: After protraction, the volumes of the pharyngeal airway increased significantly. Cross-sectional area, sagittal diameter, and transversal diameter of the upper and lower pharyngeal airways also had significant increases. These changes were significant when compared with the untreated subjects except for the transversal diameter of the lower pharyngeal airway. Dimensions of the middle pharyngeal airway remained unchanged. Conclusions: Maxillary protraction therapy significantly affects airway dimensions in patients with repaired UCLP 3 dimensionally.
MSCT 3D Analysis of Nasopharyngeal Airway After Le Fort I Maxillary Setback Surgeries

Abstract:In recent years, maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy setback has been widely applied in correcting maxilla prognathism. In the meantime, airway considerations have attracted more and more attention. The aim of this research was to observe the alteration of nasopharyngeal airway indexes after maxilla setback and offer evidence for the effectiveness and safety of maxillary Le Fort I setback surgeries. As for a retrospective cross-sectional study, 40 patients diagnosed with maxilla prognathism and undergoing maxillary setback surgeries were enrolled. They were grouped by the type of maxillary setback operations as group A (integral maxillary setback, n=19) and group B (segmental maxillary setback, n=21). Multislice computed tomography data were collected 1 week before (T0) and more than 3 months (T1) after surgery. 3D reconstruction and evaluation of the pharyngeal airway were conducted to analyze nasopharyngeal airway index variation before and after surgery and the difference between group A and group B. Preoperative and postoperative nasopharyngeal airway volume showed no statistical significance in group A ( P =0.872) and group B ( P =0.169) as well as other indexes of the nasopharynx. The comparison of postoperative airway changes between group A and group B also showed no significant difference. Both integral and segmental maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy setbacks have slight impact on nasopharyngeal airway dimensions and are safe within a specific setback range.

Influence of maxillary advancement surgery on skeletal and soft-tissue changes in the nose - a retrospective cone-beam computed tomography study

Abstract:Objectives: Surgical correction of skeletal maxillary retroposition is often associated with changes in the morphology of the nose. Unwanted alar flaring of the nose is observed in many cases. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the influence of surgical advancement of the maxilla on changes in the soft-tissue morphology of the nose. Having a coefficient that allows prediction of change in the nasal width in Caucasian patients after surgery would be helpful for treatment planning. Materials and methods: All 33 patients included in this retrospective study were of Caucasian descent and had skeletal Class III with maxillary retrognathia. They were all treated with maxillary advancement using a combination of orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery methods. Two cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) datasets were available for all of the study's participants (16 female, 17 male; age 24.3 ± 10.4 years): the first CBCT imaging was obtained before the planned procedure (T0) and the second 14.1 ± 6.4 months postoperatively (T1). Morphological changes were recorded three-dimensionally using computer-aided methods (Mimics (Materialise NV, Leuven/Belgium), Geomagic (Geomagics, Morrisville/USA)). Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 21 for Mac. Results: The mean sagittal advancement of the maxilla was 5.58 mm. The width of the nose at the alar base (Alb) changed by a mean of + 2.59 mm (±1.26 mm) and at the ala (Al) by a mean of + 3.17 mm (±1.32 mm). Both of these changes were statistically highly significant (P = 0.000). The increase in the width of the nose corresponded to approximately half of the maxillary advancement distance in over 80 % of the patients. The nasolabial angle declined by an average of -6.65° (±7.71°). Conclusions: Maxillary advancement correlates with a distinct morphological change in nasal width. This should be taken into account in the treatment approach and in the information provided to patients.

The graft position affects both and must be carefully selected. Correlations between sagittal positioning and upper airway anatomy are known from orthognathic surgery. This study aims to evaluate changes in mandibular position and upper airway anatomy after reconstructive surgery with FFF and corresponding correlations.

Correlation between oral cavity volume and upper airway changes in skeletal Class III patients undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery: a pilot cone-beam computed tomography study

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objectives To evaluate changes of the upper airway and oral cavity volumes in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, and to analyze the correlation between postoperative upper airway decrease and the amount of jaw movement and oral cavity volume reduction. Materials and Methods Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females) undergoing bimaxillary surgery were included. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the upper airway and oral cavity were performed using preoperative (T0) and postoperative (T1) (6 months) cone-beam computed tomography scans. Results The volume, sagittal area and minimum cross-sectional area of the upper airway were diminished (P < .001). The decrease in volume and minimum cross-sectional area in the oropharyngeal region of the upper airway were weakly correlated with B-point posterior movement (P < .05). Total oral cavity volume was decreased, with maxillary oral volume increasing and mandibular oral volume decreasing (P < .001). Upper airway decrease was highly correlated with total oral volume reduction and mandibular oral volume reduction, with the most significant correlation being with total oral volume reduction (P < .001). Conclusions Class III bimaxillary surgery reduced the volume, sagittal area, and minimum cross-sectional area of the upper airway as well as oral cavity volume. Upper airway changes were weakly correlated with anterior-posterior mandibular movement but significantly correlated with oral cavity volume changes. Thus, oral cavity volume reduction is a crucial factor of upper airway decrease in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery.

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) changes in class III patients receiving bimaxillary orthognathic surgery and correlate the PAS volume and minimum axial section changes with the magnitude of the surgical movement. This research involved a retrospective sample composed of 38 patients with class III skeletal occlusions. Three-dimensional measurements of the PAS volume and minimum axial section were conducted. Cephalometric points were used to verify the extent of jaw-hyoid bone movement. No significant differences were found between pre and postoperative total PAS volume ( P = 0.280), nasopharyngeal volume ( P = 0.545), oropharyngeal volume ( P = 0.297), and minimum axial section ( P = 0.568). Anterior movement of point A and posterior nasal spine were significantly associated with an increase in total PAS volume, oropharyngeal volume, and minimum axial section ( P < 0.05). However, the posterior movement of menton was significantly associated with a decrease in total PAS volume, oropharyngeal volume, and minimum axial section ( P < 0.05). The results of the present study indicated that PAS is not negatively affected by bimaxillary surgery in class III patients. However, the planning of class III patients who are prone to the development of airway problems should be done carefully.

Abstract:Thirty-nine yeast strains were recovered from a field nest of a primitive and putative novel attine ant species in the genus Myrmicocrypta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: tribe Attini). Yeasts isolated from the fungus garden and waste deposit included Candida dubliniensis, Candida oleophila, Cryptococcus haglerorum and Hanseniaspora uvarum. In addition, one morphological type was isolated overwhelmingly. Sequencing data of partial large-subunit (LSU) rDNA and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region coupled with morphological and physiological characterization accommodated this morphotype in a separate taxonomic position in relation to the known species of Trichosporon (Basidiomycota: Trichosporonales). Here, we propose a novel yeast species named Trichosporon chiarellii sp. nov. based on the description of 34 isolates; the type strain is strain FCP 540806(T) (=CBS 11177(T)).

Abstract:This prospective cohort study examined the changes in airway area and soft tissue parameters following interpositional arthroplasty for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis. Ten patients with TMJ ankylosis underwent surgery, pre-operative and post-operative skeletal and soft tissue measurements were obtained. A significant rise in soft tissue parameters was observed following surgery, although only minor changes in skeletal parameters were seen. The nasoropharyngeal area, oral area, soft palate area, and tongue area were among the variables that were examined. After the surgery, increase in value were observed in the nasoropharyngeal area (from 3482.4 mm2 to 3618.7 mm2), Oral area (from 2731.8 mm2 to 2840.8 mm2), Soft palate area (from 204.9 mm2 to 217.3 mm2), and Tongue area (from 2577.5 mm2 to 2600.8 mm2). These findings suggest that interpositional arthroplasty can improve airway area and soft tissue dimensions, affecting the stomatognathic system's aesthetic and functional aspects. Further research is needed to validate these results and assess long-term stability.

Abstract:Objective To study the influence on the three-dimensional structure changes of the upper airway space following 2-jaw orthognathic surgery for skeletal class Ⅱ patients.Methods 35 skeletal class Ⅱ patients were assembled.All the patients were treated by maxilla-mandibular surgery.Cone-beam computed tomograms obtained before surgery (T1) and at least 6 months after surgery (T2) were analyzed and measured for upper airway space.The three-dimensional morphological parameters of the upper airway before and after treatment were analyzed by Consistency test,Paired t-test,or rank sum test.by SPSS 20.0 software.Results There was a statistically significant increase in the total upper airway volume and nasopharyngeal,palatopharyngeal,glossopharyngeal,hypopharyngeal airway volume,minimum cross sectional area,anteroposterior length following 2-jaw orthognathic surgery(P＜0.05),changes for them were 24.78％ (P=0.000),9.66％ (P=0.007),11.19％(P=0.023),55.92％(P=0.000),31.19％(P=0.000),17.84％(P=0.001) and 14.30％ (P=0.008).The difference of the upper airway length,level of most constricted area and width of the most constricted area after the treatment were not found(P＞0.05).Conclusions Patients with skeletal class Ⅱ will have a wide upper airway volume and four wide parts volume,especially the glossopharyngeal volume.There was a significant increase in anteroposterior length,but no significant difference in the upper airway length.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To preliminarily establish a category of facial symmetry perception after maxillary reconstruction using anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) by the methods of stereophotogrammetry and subjective assessment. METHODS:The patients underwent maxillectomy due to neoplasms invasion, and all the maxillary defects were reconstructed using ALTF.Three-dimensional (3D) photographs were captured from the patients with a stereophotogrammatrical camera set-up.In the Geomagic software, the mirror image was created by reflecting along an arbitrary plane outside of the face.After the registration, the postoperative side on the original 3D photograph was segmented into 6 areas.The 3D change of the facial soft-tissue was measured using surface-based color map.Twenty laypeople took part in the study as observers, and they were asked to rate the 3D photographs using 5 point Likert-type scale according to their own aesthetic standard.The soft tissue asymmetry was graded according to the score.The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis using the SPSS 24.0 software. RESULTS:In the study, 44 subjects were recruited (21 males and 23 females, age range from 19 to 79 years).The soft-tissue symmetry was graded into three levels according to the subjective scores.The grade Ⅰ was basically symmetrical.The grade Ⅱ was slightly asymmetrical.The grade Ⅲ was obviously asymmetrical.Statistically significant differences were found in the suborbital (P < 0.05) and zygomatic (P < 0.05) areas when comparing all grades of soft-tissue asymmetry, and in the buccal (P < 0.05) and superiolabial (P < 0.05) areas when comparing grades Ⅰ and Ⅲ.The extent of maxillary defect had significant impact on the symmetry of the midface soft-tissue after maxillary reconstruction. CONCLUSION:Varying extent maxillectomy would result in varying degrees of asymmetry, and cause different grades of symmetry perception even if they had been reconstructed using ALTF.The higher the grade, the worse the symmetry of facial soft-tissue.Suborbital and zygomatic areas were important aesthetic units that affected the facial symmetry perception, followed by buccal and superiolabial areas.The clinicians should pay attention to the soft-tissue support in these areas when reconstructing the maxillary defect, especially large defect with orbital floor involved.

Abstract:The reconstruction of post-ablative maxillary defects is controversial. It is accepted that quality of life indicators are poorer for maxillary reconstruction in comparison to mandibular reconstruction. One factor highlighted is that of post-treatment trismus. Rates of trismus are reviewed comparing free tissue transfer to that of prosthetic obturation.A retrospective review was undertaken comparing rates of trismus at twelve months post-surgery between free tissue transfer and prosthetic obturation.85 patients were identified meeting the inclusion criteria. Both reconstruction techniques were significant for developing trismus, with a higher rate of trismus in the free flap reconstruction cohort compared to the prosthetic obturation cohort by a factor of 2.51.Modern reconstructive head and neck surgery has moved away from 'filling a hole' to a more bespoke, patient-specific reconstruction. The evidence presented here, should allow the reconstructive surgeon to better discuss outcomes with patients when considering surgical options for Class II maxillary defects.
