Abstract:Purpose As an effective tool to promote rational resource allocation and facilitate the development of green management practices such as enterprise digital innovation, the green credit policy has recently gained extensive attention. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between green credit policies and the digital innovation of enterprises, and to further explore the mechanism of action between them and their boundary conditions. Design/methodology/approach Based on micro-level data on Chinese firms from 2007 to 2019, this paper constructs a difference-in-differences (DID) model to investigate the impact and intrinsic mechanisms of green credit policies on firms' digital innovation and its boundary conditions, with the help of a quasi-natural experiment, i.e. the Green Credit Guidelines. Findings Green credit policies inhibit digital innovation and fail to compensate for innovation. The analysis of the mechanism shows that the implementation of green credit policies has a negative impact on digital innovation by increasing the financing constraints faced by firms, and has also a crowding-out effect on R&D investment, resulting in a disincentive to digital innovation. Further analysis reveals that the negative impact of green credit policies on digital innovation is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, enterprises without financially experienced executives, and in the eastern regions of China. Originality/value This study provides empirical evidence to understand the effectiveness and mechanism of influence of green credit policies on enterprise digital innovation, providing also a basis to further improve green credit policies.

Abstract:Green credit is an important way to achieve global green development. Using the adoption of the Green Credit Guidance (GCG) policy implemented by the Chinese government in 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment, this article examines the impact of the GCG on the digital transformation of highly polluting firms. This research uses text analysis to assess the extent of digital transformation. The empirical findings show that the GCG has a considerable detrimental effect on the digital transformation of significantly polluting businesses. According to the underlying mechanics, the GCG prevents extremely polluting firms from digitalization by tightening financial restrictions and lowering innovation inputs. The GCG's disincentive effect on heavy polluters is especially more pronounced in state-owned listed corporations and the Central and Western areas of China, as demonstrated by heterogeneity research. Our research offers novel ideas for creating a digital economy and promoting sustainable development in emerging developing nations like China.

Abstract:The synergy of digitalization and greening has emerged as a prominent means to achieve the goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality". Given its significant contribution to carbon emissions, the impact of digital transformation on green innovation in manufacturing enterprises remains a longstanding research hotspot. Therefore, based on the data from China A-share listed manufacturing companies spanning from 2007 to 2022, this paper empirically analyzes the influence and mechanism of digital transformation on green innovation. Our findings reveal that digital transformation can significantly promote green innovation in manufacturing enterprises, with a particularly pronounced effect on substantive green innovation. These conclusions withstand rigorous robustness tests. Mechanism analysis shows that digital transformation can facilitate green innovation by improving internal control quality and fostering industry-university-research cooperation. Moreover, our moderation analysis reveals that both equity incentives and compensation incentives strengthen the positive relationship between digital transformation and green innovation in manufacturing enterprises. Heterogeneity analysis proves that digital transformation exerts a more pronounced impact on green innovation of state-owned manufacturing enterprises, non-heavily polluted manufacturing enterprises, and enterprises located in regions with strong intellectual property protection. Furthermore, the transformation of digital underlying technologies is more conducive to fostering green innovation compared to practical application transformation. Subsequent investigation into the economic and social effects of green innovation indicates that it effectively reduces pollution emissions from manufacturing enterprises without compromising their development. Additionally, the emission reduction and income-generating effect resulting from digital transformation primarily manifest through substantive green innovation. This research expands upon the theory regarding the impact of digital transformation on green innovation in micro-manufacturing enterprises, providing empirical support for facilitating low-carbon transformations among manufacturing enterprises under the goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality".

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Under the double pressure of economic downturn and climate deterioration, the Chinese government needs to use the "double carbon" policy to drive the green transformation of the manufacturing industry. This article takes A-share manufacturing listed companies as the research object, constructs the enterprise digital economy investment index by text analysis and expert scoring method, and represents the degree of green transformation by enterprise green total factor productivity. At the theoretical level, the impact mechanism of the digital economy empowering green transformation in the manufacturing industry is hypothesized. The relevant hypotheses were tested through econometric empirical evidence, and the econometric model significantly passed the robustness test, proving that the digital economy empowers the development of green transformation in the manufacturing industry significantly. This article reveals that the digital economy promotes the green total factor productivity of enterprises by enhancing their innovation capability, improving the efficiency of production factor flow, and increasing their emission costs, but the factor intensity and the nature of enterprise owners will have different effects on the green transformation of the manufacturing industry enabled by the digital economy. This article explores the internal mechanism of green transformation development in the digital economy-enabled manufacturing industry and provides empirical evidence for enterprises to formulate development strategies and for governments to issue guiding policies.

Abstract:Abstract Digitalization and greening are key themes in global development, the manufacturing industry, as a major sector of energy consumption and carbon emissions, is in urgent need of transformation to realize energy conservation and emission reduction, digital transformation provides an opportunity for its green development. However, whether digital transformation can restrain the carbon emission intensity (CEI) of enterprises is still controversial. Based on the data of China's A‐share manufacturing listed companies from 2013 to 2020, this paper uses fixed effect model and intermediary effect model to explore the relationship between digital transformation and enterprise CEI and the influence path. the results show that: (1) Digital transformation has significantly reduced the CEI of manufacturing enterprises. (2) Mechanism analysis indicates that green technological innovation and resource allocation efficiency play a chain mediating role in this relationship. (3) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the carbon emission reduction effect of digital transformation is more significant when enterprises belong to an energy‐intensive manufacturing industry or face strong environmental regulations and industry competition. The analysis of this paper not only deepens enterprises' understanding of digital transformation and green development but also provides a policy basis for China to advocate the coordinated development of the digital economy and green economy.

Abstract:The green transformation of the manufacturing industry is related to the low-carbon and green development of the economy. The study explored the impact mechanism of the implementation of green finance policy on the green transformation of China’s manufacturing industry from 2013 to 2021 from three aspects of capital formation and incentive, credit catalysis, integration and decentralization, and conducted a quasi-natural experiment using difference-in-difference (DID) model. Research finds that: (1) The implementation of green finance significantly promotes the green transformation of China’s manufacturing industry and has good sustainability. The mechanisms of fund formation and orientation, credit catalysis, integration and decentralization are the primary mechanism of green finance to promote the green transformation of the manufacturing industry, and the implementation effect of green finance has apparent heterogeneity; (2) The promoting effect of green finance on the green transformation of the manufacturing industry is solely vast in state-owned industries however now not enormous in non-state-owned industries; (3) The influence of green finance on the green transformation efficiency of manufacturing industry with a better information environment is more significant than manufacturing industry with a worse information environment; (4) Faced with the pressure of investing in green industries, the coping strategies adopted by enterprises in different industries are quite different. The promoting effect of green finance on the green transformation of the manufacturing industry is significant in low-competition industries but insignificant in high-competition industries. This study has enriched the research on the effect of green finance policies, explored solutions based on quasi-nature, and provided policy references for the green transformation of the manufacturing industry.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the “Green Credit Performance Evaluation of Banking Depository Financial Institutions” implemented by the People's Bank of China as a quasi-natural experiment and a difference-in-differences (DID) approach to examine the impact of green finance policy on the digital transformation of heavily polluting firms. The results show that firms' digital transformation is effectively driven by green finance policy. The policy effect is more pronounced among low financing-constrained firms, state-owned firms, and firms with high analyst coverage. Furthermore, green finance policy influences the digital transformation of firms primarily by increasing digital outcomes and guiding management's strategic direction.

Abstract:In the context of the rapid development of the global digital economy , it is of great significance to explore the greening transformation of the manufacturing industry from the micro-perspective of enterprise digital development. This paper empirically examines the impact and mechanism of enterprise digital development on the greening transformation of the manufacturing industry using the 2010–2020 data of Chinese A-share listed companies in the manufacturing industry as a sample. The study shows that enterprise digital development can significantly promote the greening transformation of China’s manufacturing industry, and this conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. Technological innovation and financing constraints are important mediating mechanisms. Further research found that the impact of enterprise digital development on the greening transformation of China’s manufacturing industry has a positive nonlinear effect, and its marginal effect shows a weakening trend. Heterogeneity analysis shows that, from the perspective of micro characteristics, digital development is more able to promote the green transformation of state-owned and large enterprises. From a macro-regional perspective, digital development can better promote the green transformation of the manufacturing industry in eastern cities, key city clusters, and high-level cities. The findings of this paper can provide corresponding insights for "revitalizing the manufacturing industry", and also provide decision-making references for countries aiming to make the manufacturing industry bigger and stronger.

Abstract:The going of present pilot study is an analysis of features changes of EEG short pieces registered from 32 sites, at perception of musical melodies healthy examinees depending on logic (cognizance) and emotional (it was pleasant it was not pleasant) melody estimations. For this purpose changes of event-related synchronization/desynchronization, and also wavelet-synchrony of EEG-responses at 31 healthy examinees at the age from 18 till 60 years were compared. It is shown that at a logic estimation of music the melody cognizance is accompanied the event-related desynchronization in the left fronto-parietal-temporal area. At an emotional estimation of a melody the event-related synchronization in left fronto - temporal area for the pleasant melodies, desynchronization in temporal area for not pleasant and desynchronization in occipital area for the melodies which are not causing the emotional response is typical. At the analysis of wavelet-synchrony of EEG characterizing jet changes of interaction of cortical zones, it is revealed that the most distinct topographical distinctions concern type of processing of the heard music: logic (has learned-hasn't learned) or emotional (it was pleasant-it was not pleasant). If at an emotional estimation changes interhemispheric communications between associative cortical zones (central, frontal, temporal), are more expressed at logic - between inter - and intrahemispheric communications of projective zones of the acoustic analyzer (temporal area). It is supposed that the revealed event-related synchronization/desynhronization reflects, most likely, an activation component of an estimation of musical fragments whereas the wavelet-analysis provides guidance on character of processing of musical stimulus.
How does the digital economy promote green technology innovation by manufacturing enterprises? Evidence from China

Abstract:With the rapid development of the digital economy and the increasingly severe environmental issues, the role of the digital economy in green innovation has been attracting more attention; however, only a limited amount of research has been done in this area. Therefore, based on matching data at the city and manufacturing enterprise level in China during 2011–2018, this paper attempted to integrate the digital economy (more specifically, the Internet and digital finance) with resource allocation and green technology innovation together in a unified scheme. Our study confirmed that the digital economy could significantly promote green technology innovation by manufacturing enterprises, but that digital finance was the dominant feature. Resource allocation efficiency played a partial mediating role between digital economy and green technology innovation. Furthermore, considering the heterogeneity in enterprise ownership and industrial pollution, the digital economy had a more positive effect on green technology innovation in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and high pollution industries. As for the heterogeneity of region, the Internet significantly contributed to green technology innovation in regions with different levels of development. In the eastern region of China, especially, the influence of digital finance on green technology innovation was more significant. In view of these findings, this study provides important insights for strengthening the integration of the digital economy with green transformation, emphasizing the rationality of resource allocation, and formulating policies for different enterprises.

Abstract:How to utilize financial instrument to deal with environmental issues has been a focal topic. Taking the introduction of green credit program as a “quasi-natural experiment,” the propensity score matching and difference-in-difference approach (PSM-DID) are used to investigate the impact of the green credit policy implemented by Chinese government on firm-level industrial pollutant emissions. The estimation results indicate that the green credit policy significantly reduces corporate sulfur dioxide emissions. Heterogeneity analysis shows this impact is more pronounced for large-scale enterprises and enterprises located in the eastern region. The estimated mediation models reveal that after the implementation of the green credit policy, reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions can be attribute to the increased environmental investment and improved energy consumption intensity. Moreover, the green credit policy is also significantly effective in mitigating the discharge of other common industrial pollutants. Our findings highlight the importance of green credit policies in achieving greener industrial production and more sustainable economic development.

Abstract:As a market-based financial instrument, green credit is one of the key drivers for constructing green financial system. Green credit policy (GCP) can guide capital flow from high-energy consumption and high-pollution industries to technologically advanced emerging industrial sectors, so as to support the development of green industries and curb the emissions of polluting industries. In order to explore the extent to which the goal of green credit policy in China has been achieved, based on the micro data of China's listed enterprises from 2009 to 2017, this paper explores the impact of “Green Credit Guidelines” (2012 Guidelines) policy on the green transformation of heavy polluting industries (HPIs) by using a Difference in Differences (DID) and Propensity Score Matched-Difference in Differences (PSM-DID) models. We then analyze the mechanism between GCP and green transformation of HPIs and identify the heterogeneous effects of GCP on the green transformation of HPIs. The results show that the 2012 Guidelines significantly promote the green transformation of HPIs, through debt financing constraints and equity financing constraints. The effect of 2012 Guidelines on green transformation of small-scale and private enterprises is more pronounced. However, the positive effect of 2012 Guidelines on the green transformation of HPIs has not been sustained in the long term. Our study provides an insight for decision makers to manage green transformation of HPIs from the GCP perspective, by informing the economic consequences of GCP and pushing the industrial transformation towards green development.

Abstract:With the continuous intensification of competition among major countries and the resurgence of anti-globalization trends, countries around the world have strengthened their strategic deployment for digital transformation in the manufacturing industry. Digital development enables enterprises to transform and upgrade, and the digital transformation and green transformation of enterprises have a historic intersection. This study uses the panel data of 1900 A-share listed companies to explain the theoretical mechanism of digital transformation to promote carbon emission reduction from the perspective of green technology progress. In addition, the threshold model is used to analyze the nonlinear relationship. The results show that the digital transformation has significantly reduced the carbon emission level of Chinese manufacturing enterprises, and the conclusion is still true after the instrumental variable estimation and robustness test. Heterogeneity analysis found that the carbon emission reduction in state-owned enterprises is more obvious. Green technology innovation capability shows the technology dividend effect, which is an important way for digital transformation to promote carbon emission reduction. This study expands the research on the sustainable development of China's manufacturing industry and provides guidance for policy makers and business decision makers.

Abstract:Manufacturing's green transformation is essential for advancing high-quality development. Green credit, which functions as a market-driven tool, offers support for achieving this transformation. Using manufacturing data from 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2020, this research establishes a theoretical framework to analyze how green credit and marketization levels influence manufacturing's green transformation. This research also provides an empirical analysis of how green credit influences this transition. The results are as follows: first, the growth of green credit plays a significant role in driving the green transformation of the manufacturing sector, with this finding remaining valid after a series of robustness and endogeneity tests. Second, the mechanism analysis shows that green credit supports the environmentally friendly transformation of the manufacturing industry through an improvement in R&D intensity. Third, moderation testing reveals that the process of marketization significantly strengthens the positive effect of green credit on the promotion of manufacturing's green transformation Among them are the following, the relationship between the government and the market and the development of the product market inhibit the role of green credit in support of the green transformation of the manufacturing sector. The development of factor markets, the development of non-state-owned economies, and the development of market intermediary organizations and the legal system environment exert a facilitating function, which significantly enhances the positive effect of green credit in the promotion of the green transformation. The conclusions provide fresh insights and empirical evidence for advancing manufacturing's green transformation and hold practical significance for refining green credit policies and advancing market-oriented reforms.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the relationship between digital inclusive finance (DIF) and the green transformation of manufacturing enterprises using data from A-share listed manufacturing companies in China from 2011 to 2020. This study employs a super-efficient SBM model to measure enterprises' green total factor productivity (GTFP) as a proxy variable for their green transformation. It explores the mechanisms through which DIF influences this transformation. Additionally, this study examines the effect of informal environmental regulation based on residents' environmental awareness. The results show that (1) the development of DIF has a significant improvement effect on enterprises' GTFP; (2) alleviating financing constraints on the supply side and promoting residents' consumption on the demand side are identified as important mechanisms through which DIF improves enterprises' GTFP; (3) increased residents' environmental awareness can strengthen the positive effect of DIF on the GTFP of enterprises; and (4) the promotion effect of DIF on the GTFP of enterprises is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises and eastern regions. These conclusions provide valuable policy insights to advance the development of DIF and facilitate the green transformation of the manufacturing industry.

Abstract:To achieve the twin goals of “stable growth” and “environmental protection”, it is necessary to promote green innovation in firms and green transformation of the economy. This paper regards China’s Green Credit Guidelines policy in 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment to explore the impact of the policy on the green innovation of heavy-polluting firms. This analysis uses Chinese A-share listed industrial enterprises from 2008–2019 as the research sample and difference-in-difference (DID) as the empirical method. The results show that implementing the green credit policy has significantly contributed to firms’ green technology innovation enhancement. Moreover, the mechanism suggests that the green credit policy can promote firms’ green innovation through channels, such as inhibiting the compression of heavy-polluting firms’ financing space, increasing their debt financing costs, and promoting firm transformation and upgrading. Further study finds that the green credit policy promotes green innovation significantly for state-owned and large firms but not for non-state-owned and small-scale firms. Based on our empirical results, we can conclude that the green credit policy is an efficient way to realize the goal of “environmental excellence” and guide firms to effectively carry out green innovation.

Abstract:In the context of the low-carbon transition, enhancing green innovation efficiency (GIE) emerges as a vital pathway for the manufacturing industry to achieve sustainability. However, within the ongoing wave of digital transformation (DT), there is limited research addressing the connection between DT and GIE in manufacturing firms. Drawing from the resource-based view and resource dependency theory, this research aims to evaluate the potential of DT in driving GIE by analyzing data from 682 publicly listed manufacturing firms in China between 2011 and 2021. Our findings indicate that DT exerts a notable and positive influence on GIE. Meanwhile, this study identifies improving management efficiency as the mediating pathway through which DT affects GIE. Additionally, R&D subsidies positively moderate the beneficial impact of DT on GIE. Lastly, state-owned companies derive greater benefits in terms of GIE from the process of DT.

This paper uses China’s Green Credit Guidelines to conduct a quasi-natural experiment based on relevant panel data of industries from 2007 to 2018. Specifically, it employs the Super-SBM model including non-expected output to measure the green innovation efficiency of 35 industries in China, and constructs the propensity score matching difference-in-difference model to explore how green credit policy impact on the green innovation efficiency of heavy polluting industries. Further study finds that green credit policy pushes heavy polluting industries to improve green innovation efficiency by increasing financing cost and R&D investment; meanwhile, the heterogeneity test shows that the higher the state-owned share of the industry, the greater the positive effect of green credit policy on its green innovation efficiency. Finally, in order to accelerate the implementation of green credit policy and promote the green innovation efficiency of heavy polluting industries, banks can guide heavy polluting industrial enterprises through credit to carry out green technological transformation, heavy polluting industries should raise awareness of green innovation, and government should encourage heavy polluting industrial enterprises to carry out green innovation, and guide and supervise the state-owned enterprises in particular, so that they can improve cleanliness and achieve green economic development.

Abstract:Green development and the digital economy are receiving increasing attention among scholars, practitioners, and policy makers, as the link between the two remains unclear, and exploring the study of the mechanisms at play between the two to achieve quality economic development is an urgent issue to be addressed. This study addresses this gap and aims to provide clarity by analyzing examples of business practices in developing countries. Using a total of 20,283 datasets from 2049 listed manufacturing firms from China from 2007 to 2020 as the study sample, the mechanism of digital transformation's impact on firms' green technological innovation capability is empirically examined and the mediating role of firms' green dynamic capabilities is verified. This study finds that: (1) Digital transformation significantly enhances the level of green technology innovation of enterprises. (2) There is a partial mediating effect of green dynamic capabilities in the process of digital transformation positively affecting enterprises' green technology innovation. (3) Digital transformation by state-owned, central and western regions and by medium-sized enterprises is more significantly effective in promoting green technology innovation than non-state-owned, eastern regions and small and large enterprises. (4) The analysis of economic consequences shows that digital transformation can mitigate the incremental costs incurred in the process of digital transformation by empowering enterprises to achieve green development and cost reduction through green technology innovation.

Abstract:The impact of China's green finance policies on renewable energy, clean energy, and other green companies is a hot topic of concern. This study uses the difference-in-differences (DID) model to examine the incentive effect of the Green Credit Guidelines (GCG) on the technological innovation and financial performance of Chinese listed green enterprises. The heterogeneity analysis is carried out from the level of digital finance, green development, and marketization. This study finds that: (1) Green finance is conducive to stimulating the technological innovation and financial performance of green enterprises. (2) Green enterprises in areas with high digital finance levels have a more significant incentive effect on green finance policies, compared to areas with less-developed digital finance. (3) Green enterprises in areas with high levels of green development are more significantly positively affected by green finance policies, compared to areas with less-developed digital finance. (4) The incentive effect of green credit policies on green enterprises in areas with a high degree of marketization is more significant, compared with regions with a lower level of green development. Finally, some policy implications are proposed to provide a reference for China to improve the green financial system to facilitate the financing of green enterprises.
