Associations of Perceived Stress with Loneliness and Depressive Symptoms: the Mediating Role of Sleep Quality

Abstract:Background Whether perceived stress is associated with loneliness and depressive symptoms in general adults, and to what extent sleep quality mediates the associations, remains unknown. The aim of this study was to estimate the associations of perceived stress with loneliness and depressive symptoms, and the mediating role of sleep quality in these associations. Methods Cross-sectional data on 734 participants (aged 18–87 years) were analyzed. Perceived stress was assessed using the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10; range 0–40). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; range 0–21). Loneliness was assessed using the three-item short form of the Revised University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) loneliness scale (range 3–9). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD-10) Scale (range 0–30). General linear regression models, multivariable logistic regression models, and formal mediation analysis were performed. Results After adjustment for age and sex, we found that with each 1-point increment in the perceived stress score, both the loneliness score (β = 0.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06, 0.08) and depression score (β = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.49) increased significantly. Robust results were observed when adjusting for more confounders. Furthermore, sleep quality mediated 5.3% (95% CI: 1.3%, 10.0%; P = 0.014) and 9.7% (95% CI: 6.2%, 14.0%; P < 0.001) of the associations of perceived stress score with loneliness score and depression score, respectively. Conclusions In general Chinese adults, perceived stress was positively associated with loneliness and depressive symptoms, and sleep quality partially mediated these associations. The findings reveal a potential pathway from perceived stress to mental health through sleep behaviors, and highlight the importance of implementing sleep intervention programs for promoting mental health among those who feel highly stressed.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the evolution of the relationship between Internet use on psychological well-being from elementary school, middle school, to high schools. Randomized stratified sampling was used. Participants were 3, 185 teens in Kunming, a city located in southwest China. They were asked to complete a questionnaire on Internet Use and Well-Being Scale. The result indicated a relationship existed between Internet use and psychological well-being. Higher grade students used Internet earlier, spent more total time online per week, and scored lower psychological well-being. Students of middle and high school shared more similarity on Internet usage behavior and content preference of social and study services. Significant difference existed on loneliness and anxiety among elementary-, middle-, and high-schools. Compared with females, males significantly used the Internet earlier, more frequently, more for all Internet services, and scored higher psychological well-being. The difference between genders was also discussed. © 2011 IEEE.
Exploring Associations between Problematic Internet Use, Depressive Symptoms and Sleep Disturbance among Southern Chinese Adolescents

Abstract:The primary aim of this study was to examine associations between problematic Internet use, depression and sleep disturbance, and explore whether there were differential effects of problematic Internet use and depression on sleep disturbance. A total of 1772 adolescents who participated in the Shantou Adolescent Mental Health Survey were recruited in 2012 in Shantou, China. The Chinese version of the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to evaluate the prevalence and severity of Internet addiction. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), and other socio-demographic measures were also completed. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the mediating effect of problematic Internet use and depression on sleep disturbance. Among the participants, 17.2% of adolescents met the criteria for problematic Internet use, 40.0% were also classified as suffering from sleep disturbance, and 54.4% of students had depressive symptoms. Problematic Internet use was significantly associated with depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance. The correlation between depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance was highly significant. Both problematic Internet use (β = 0.014; Sobel test Z = 12.7, p < 0.001) and depression (β = 0.232; Sobel test Z = 3.39, p < 0.001) had partially mediating effects on sleep disturbance and depression was of greater importance for sleep disturbance than problematic Internet use. There is a high prevalence of problematic Internet use, depression and sleep disturbance among high school students in southern China, and problematic Internet use and depressive symptoms are strongly associated with sleep disturbance. This study provides evidence that problematic Internet use and depression have partially mediating effects on sleep disturbance. These results are important for clinicians and policy makers with useful information for prevention and intervention efforts.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated the association between social anxiety and sleep quality and further explored the potential mediating role of internet addiction in depressed adolescents. Methods: This study included 440 Chinese depressed adolescents (mean age = 15.0 years, SD = 2.0). Participants completed questionnaires, including Social Avoidance and Social Distress Scale, Internet Addiction Test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. A structural equation model was used to analyze the association between social anxiety and sleep quality, with internet addiction as a mediator. Gender differences were examined by multi-group analysis. Results: Among participants, 61.8% reported poor sleep quality. The sleep quality was significantly different on the level of gender ( p = 0.016), education level ( p = 0.043), and family history ( p = 0.002). Sleep quality was positively associated with social anxiety ( p < 0.001) and internet addiction ( p < 0.001). Furthermore, internet addiction partially mediated the relationship between social anxiety and sleep quality, and the mediation effect ratio was 16.1% ( p < 0.001). Finally, no significant differences were found in this mechanism. Conclusion: We concluded that both social anxiety and internet addiction were risk factors for depressed adolescents' poor sleep quality. Social anxiety further affected sleep quality through internet addiction.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough prior studies have investigated the association between stressful life events and adolescents’ problematic Internet use, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The self-worth orientation theory assumes that self-worth is the ultimate motivation of human behavior, and it derives from a self-worth supporting system, including trust or support from significant others and personal achievement, among others. Therefore, stressful life events might predict adolescents’ problematic Internet use by undermining their self-worth. However, physical activity might moderate the effect of stressful life events on self-worth. To examine these hypotheses, 2058 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 14.03 years, SD = 0.83 years) were recruited to complete a series of questionnaires. The results showed that self-worth partially mediated the relationship between stressful life events and problematic Internet use, and physical activity moderated the association between stressful life events and self-worth. In addition, the negative relationship between stressful life events and self-worth was stronger for adolescents with higher levels of physical activity, in line with the reverse risk-buffering model. Further multigroup analysis showed that the current theoretical model was robust in both male and female groups. This study has certain theoretical and practical significance for the prevention of adolescents’ problematic Internet use.

Abstract:This study explored the impact of academic stress on sleep quality among Chinese adolescents, examined the mediation role of negative affect and the moderating effect of peer relationships. In total, 858 students in this study from grade 7 to grade 12 completed questionnaires of sleep quality, academic stress, negative affect, and peer relationships. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypothetical model. The results indicated that, academic stress negatively predicts the sleep quality, and the negative affect partially mediated the relationship of them. In addition, the effect of academic stress on negative affect was moderated by peer relationships. The results mean that adolescents with more academic stress may have worse sleep quality, negative affect may act as a potential link from academic stress to sleep quality. Moreover, the effect of academic stress on negative affect is moderated by peer relationships. It means that higher levels of peer relationships helped reduce negative affect caused by academic stress and allow them to sleep better.

Abstract:Background: Sleep problems and eating disorders (EDs) are both serious public health concerns often seen in young adults. Yet, the underlying mechanisms for such associations are largely unknown. This study aims to examine potential serial multiple mediation effects of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and psychological distress (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) in the relationship between sleep quality and disordered eating behaviors/attitudes (DEBs). Methods: A total of 4,325 students from two Tibet universities in China (2,657 females and 1,668 males) completed an online survey that included the following measurements: Eating Attitude Test-26 for disordered eating behaviors/attitudes, the Chinese Version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI), Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Version (SAS-SV) for problematic smartphone use, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for psychological distress. Results: While the direct path linking sleep quality and DEBs was not found to be significant (Standardized β = 0.006, 95% CI = −0.0667~0.0970), both PSU (Standardized β = 0.016, 95% CI = 0.0256~0.0591) and anxiety symptoms (Standardized β = 0.014, 95% CI = 0.0203~0.0526) may mediate a link between sleep quality and DEBs; serial multiple mediation analysis revealed that a serial indirect pathway of “sleep quality -> PSU -> anxiety symptoms -> DEBs” existed(Standardized β = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.0002~0.0012). Similarly, while the direct path linking sleep quality and DEBs was not found to be significant (Standardized β = 0.006, 95% CI = −0.0667~0.0970), both PSU (Standardized β = 0.020, 95% CI = 0.0337~0.0692) and depressive symptoms (Standardized β = 0.015, 95% CI = 0.0139~0.0652) may mediate a link between sleep quality and DEBs; serial multiple mediation analysis revealed that a serial indirect pathway of “sleep quality -> PSU -> depressive symptoms -> DEBs” existed (Standardized β = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.0006~0.0038). Conclusions: Psychological and behavioral factors may comprehensively work together, leading to flow-on effects from sleep problems to disordered eating behaviors among university students. Appropriate interventions that target problematic smartphone use could thus potentially reduce anxiety and depression levels, which in turn will provide a buffer against the negative impact of poor sleep quality on eating disorder symptoms.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of academic stress on physical activity and sleep, and subsequently their impacts on anxiety and depression. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from a convenience sample of 1533 adolescents in an eastern province in China. Surveys were used to collect data on academic stress, anxiety, depression, sleep, physical activity, and demographics. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and path analysis were used to analyze data. Results: The participants reported about 6.77 ± 0.89 h of sleep per day and 1.62 ± 1.79 days of 60 min of physical activity each week. Academic stress was positively correlated with anxiety and depression, which were negatively correlated with physical activity and sleep. The path analysis showed that academic stress directly predicted anxiety (β = 0.54) and depression (β = 0.55), and hours of sleep (β = 0.024) and the number of days of 60 min physical activity (β = 0.014) mediated the relation. Conclusion: The results largely supported our hypotheses and supported the need to lessen academic stress experienced by Chinese adolescents, in effort to enhance mental health indices directly, and by allowing for engagement in health-related behaviors such as physical activity and sleep.

Problematic internet use and suicide ideation among Chinese adolescents: The indirect effects of insomnia, nightmares, and social jetlag

Abstract:Background: Problematic Internet use (PIU) is related to suicide ideation (SI) in adolescents, but little is known about the potential mechanisms between them. This study aimed to examine the mediation roles of insomnia, nightmares, and social jetlag in the association of PIU with SI in adolescents. Methods: A total of 39,731 adolescents (mean age = 13.49 ± 0.76 years, 54.4 % males) from Shenzhen, China, participated in a cross-sectional survey. SI was assessed using the ninth item of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. PIU was measured by the Revised Chinese Internet Addiction Scale. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess insomnia symptoms, nightmare frequency, social jetlag, sleep duration, psychological distress, and social-demographical characteristics. Logistic regression and path analyses were performed to examine the associations between PIU, insomnia symptoms, nightmares, social jetlag, and SI. Results: The prevalence of PIU and SI were 14.9 % and 18.6 %, respectively. PIU, insomnia symptoms, frequent nightmares, and social jetlag were significantly associated with SI. Path analyses showed that the indirect effects of PIU on SI through insomnia symptoms, frequent nightmares, and social jetlag were significant. Conversely, social jetlag significantly mediated the pathway from SI to PIU. The mediation effect sizes of these sleep and circadian problems were slightly larger in females than in males. Limitations: Cross-sectional design limited the capacity to infer causal relationships. Conclusions: The associations between PIU and SI were mediated by sleep and circadian problems. These findings underscore the importance of assessing and intervening in sleep and circadian problems among adolescents with PIU or SI.

Abstract:Abstract Background:The problem of the decline of college students' sleep quality has gradually become a major factor affecting the physical and mental health of college students. The present study mainly explored the status of college students' sleep quality and its relationship with internet addiction, anxiety and depression.Methods:A sample of 5794 college students(18.89±1.10) from two randomly selected college from Anhui in China completed the measurement of sleep quality,Internet addiction,anxiety and depression.Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).Results:The total detection rate of sleep disorder was 31.30% and the average score of PSQI was 6.27±2.62 in 5974 college students. Sleep disorders rate of females(c 2 =76.503, P <0.001) and PSQI average scores (t=-11.915, P <0.001) were significantly higher than those of males. Students in non-medical colleges had higher sleep disorders rate (c 2 =6.880, P <0.001) and PSQI average scores (t=-3.668, P <0.001) than medical college students.The sleep quality of college students was positively correlated with internet addiction (r=0.197, P <0.05), anxiety (r=0.227, P <0.05) and depression (r=0.268, P <0.05). The probability of females having sleep disorders was 1.726 times than that of males( OR =1.726, P <0.001).Third grade students were more prone to have sleep disorders( OR =1.240, P <0.05).Internet addiction ( OR =1.336, P <0.001), anxiety ( OR =1.695, P <0.001) and depression ( OR =1.964, P <0.001) were risk factors of sleep quality. Extroverted personality was a protective factor ( OR =-0.689, P <0.001).Conclusion:These findings suggested that college students had a high rate of sleep disorders. Schools and related departments should take appropriate measures to improve the sleep quality and promote physical and mental health of college student. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between PSU and poor sleep quality by investigating the independent and serial mediating roles of anxiety and depressive symptoms in a population of university students in Tibet, China. Methods: A total of 2993 Tibetan college students completed three waves of data surveys, with all participants completing questionnaires on PSU, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality (Time 1 (T1) -Time 3 (T3)). Bootstrapped mediation analysis was used to explore the mediating role of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the longitudinal relationship between PSU and sleep quality. Results: Both direct and indirect effects of PSU on poor sleep quality were found. PSU (T1) can had not only a direct negative influence on poor sleep quality (T3) among young adults (direct effect = 0.021, 95% CI = 0.010– 0.033) but also an indirect negative impact via three pathways: the independent mediating effect of anxiety symptoms (T2) (indirect effect 1 = 0.003, 95% CI = 0.001– 0.006), the independent mediating effect of depressive symptoms (T2) (indirect effect 2 = 0.004, 95% CI = 0.002– 0.006), and the serial mediating effects of anxiety (T2) and depressive symptoms (T2) (indirect effect 3 = 0.008, 95% CI =0.005– 0.011). Conclusion: These findings highlight the role of anxiety and depression symptoms as joint mediating factors in the relationship between PSU and sleep disturbances. Interventions focused on improving sleep that incorporate behavioural measures could benefit from treatment approaches targeting mental disorders. According to a report by the World Health Organization, one-third of the global population is affected by sleep disturbances. 1–3 Sleep disorders can have short-term effects such as mood disturbances, decreased attention, and somatic symptoms. Abstract:With growing involution in contemporary China, academic stress and sleep quality have become two noticeable issues among Chinese college students. Amid this background, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between academic stress and sleep quality, and the potential mediating mechanisms and antecedents to this relationship. First, we developed a Perceived Academic Stress Scale for Chinese Undergraduate Students (PASSCUS) in the pilot study. Demonstrating satisfactory psychometric quality, this scale effectively distinguishes between academic stress caused by the (lasting) education involution and that caused by (episodic) academic workload. In the main study, we tested an integrated theoretical model on the relationship between perceived academic stress (using PASSCUS) and sleep quality to understand the mediating mechanism through which academic stress predicts sleep quality among a convenient sample of 466 participants. Consistent with our expectations, we found that academic stress predicted social comparison, which predicted bedtime procrastination, which further predicted worse sleep quality. Furthermore, our hypotheses were also supported that cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression emotion regulation strategies contributed to academic stress. Whereas cognitive reappraisal negatively predicted perceived academic stress, expressive suppression positively predicted perceived academic stress. Additionally, the relationship between expressive suppression and perceived lasting academic stress was stronger than that between expressive suppression and episodic academic stress. Taken together, this study introduces PASSCUS as a valuable tool for distinguishing between types of academic stress while also elucidating the specific pathways through which these stress types impact sleep quality. Moreover, our findings pointed to the potential for reducing college students' problems of academic stress and sleep quality by improving emotion regulation.

Although some studies showed that anxiety is related to sleep quality, the relationship between time anxiety (which is a more concrete manifestation of anxiety in the temporal dimension) and sleep quality, as well as its potential mechanisms, still requires further investigation and analysis. This study aimed to explore the relationship between time anxiety and sleep quality among college students, and to examine the mediating role of irrational procrastination and the moderating effect of physical activity. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,137 participants recruited from four universities in eastern, western, and central China. They completed a questionnaire survey on time anxiety, irrational procrastination, physical activity, and sleep quality. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS 3.3. Results: Time anxiety had a significant positive impact on sleep quality (β = 0.28, t = 9.95, p < 0.001). Irrational procrastination played a mediating role between time anxiety and college students' sleep quality, the effect value was 0.05, and the intermediary effect accounted for 19.26%. Physical activity moderated the direct effect of time anxiety on college students' sleep quality (β = -0.08, t = -2.98, p < 0.01), and moderated the second half path of irrational procrastination mediation model (β = -0.06, t = -2.12, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Higher levels of time anxiety are associated with poorer sleep quality among college students. Time anxiety not only directly affects college students' sleep quality, but also indirectly affects it through irrational procrastination. Conducting physical activities can mitigate the impact of time anxiety and irrational procrastination on college students' sleep quality.
Associations Between Problematic Internet Use and Externalizing Problem Behaviors Among Chinese Rural Adolescent

Abstract:This study aims to provide a new perspective on the relationship between problematic Internet use and externalizing problem behaviors among adolescents. Some studies have focused on the relationship between problematic Internet use and externalizing problem behaviors. However, research on the underlying mechanism is still insufficient. Additionally, peer relationship, mental health and parental knowledge has been ignored as a crucial factor. Altogether, 7101 Chinese rural adolescents aged 13–19 years completed an anonymous self-report questionnaire. The results show that: (1) problematic Internet use has a negative effect against the development of externalizing problem behaviors; (2) peer relationship and mental health both have a mediating role in the relationship between problematic Internet use and externalizing problem behaviors; (3) problematic Internet use can indirectly affect externalizing problem behaviors through the chain mediation of peer relationship and mental health; (4) parental knowledge has the potential to moderate the indirect impact by diminishing the association between problematic Internet use and externalizing problem behaviors; and (5) the impact of problematic Internet use on externalizing problem behaviors has significant gender differences. The negative impact was greater on boys than on girls. In relation to these findings, this study has discussed the possible reasons and made some practical suggestions to improve Internet use among rural adolescents.

Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal attempt among Chinese adolescents: The mediation role of sleep quality

Abstract:Background: Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempt (SA) are not well understood. We aimed to examine these associations among Chinese adolescents, and whether any potential association is mediated through sleep quality. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1,771 (994 boys [56.1%] and 777 girls [43.9%], mean [SD] age was 12.9 [0.6] years) adolescents who participated in the baseline survey of the Chinese Adolescent Health Growth Cohort (CAHGC) study. Depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, NSSI, SA and sleep quality were measured by validated questionnaire. Logistic regression models were employed to estimate the associations of depression and anxiety with NSSI and SA. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediate effect of sleep quality. Results: The 12-month prevalence of NSSI and SA was 17.1 and 8.3%, respectively. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with NSSI (the adjusted odds ratio [aOR] was 1.89 [95% CI 1.34–2.65] for depressive symptoms and 2.84 [95% CI 2.05–3.94] for anxiety symptoms) and SA (the aOR was 3.20 [95% CI 2.03–5.05] for depressive symptoms and 2.98 [95% CI 1.84–4.84] for anxiety symptoms). No significant gender differences were found in the associations. The mediation proportion of sleep quality on the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI, as well as depressive and anxiety symptoms with SA were 21.1, 13.9, 13.6, and 14.7, respectively. Conclusion: Independent associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI and SA were observed in Chinese adolescents, and there were no significant gender differences in the associations. Moreover, these associations were partially mediated through sleep quality. Targeted interventions for adolescents' NSSI and SA should focus on those who have depressive and anxiety symptoms, and poor sleep quality.

Abstract:<p>The steep rise of smartphone use has raised public concerns about smartphone addiction and its associated negative health consequences, such as poor sleep quality; however, limited research has examined the psychological mechanisms underlying these associations. The current study tested the effects of smartphone addiction on poor sleep quality, through self-regulation and bedtime procrastination, among 427 Chinese undergraduate students, aged 18 or older (<em>M</em> = 19.36; female = 66%), who voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire. The results showed that 1/3 of participants reported poor subjective sleep quality. Smartphone addiction and bedtime procrastination had a significant positive relationship, whereas self-regulation had a significant negative association, with poor sleep quality (which was assessed by sleep latency, sleep duration, and subjective sleep quality). Despite its nonsignificant direct effects, the indirect effects of smartphone addiction, via both self-regulation and bedtime procrastination, on the three indicators of poor sleep quality were statistically significant. The findings have supported the premise that both bedtime procrastination and poor self-regulation are risk-enhancing mediators on the association between smartphone addiction on poor sleep quality. Therefore, they should be considered in intervention programs (e.g., self-regulation skill training) to reduce smartphone addiction and improve sleep quality and physical wellbeing among university students.</p>
