Abstract:Background: Older adult women are at risk for negative health outcomes that engaging in sustained physical activity can help prevent. However, promoting long-term maintenance of physical activity in this population has proven to be a challenge. Increasing autonomous motivations (ie, intrinsic, integrated, and identified regulations) for physical activity may facilitate enduring behavior change. Digitally delivered games for health that take a celebratory technology approach, that is, using technology to create new ways to experience valued behaviors and express valued beliefs, may be a useful way to target autonomous motivations for physical activity. Formative research with the target population is needed to design compelling intervention content. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate older adult women's reactions to and thoughts about a photography-based, social media walking game targeting autonomous motivations for physical activity. Methods: During an individual semistructured interview, a moderator solicited feedback from 20 older adult women (age range 65-74 years) as part of formative research to develop a social media game featuring weekly walking challenges. The challenges were designed to target autonomous motivations for physical activity. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Two reviewers conducted thematic content analysis on interview transcripts. Results: We identified 3 overarching themes in qualitative data analysis. These reflected the playful experiences, value, and acceptability associated with the intervention challenges. Generally, participants understood what the challenges were asking them to do, proffered appropriate example responses, and indicated that the challenges would be enjoyable. Participants reported that the intervention content afforded many and varied playful experiences (eg, competition, discovery, exploration, expression, fellowship, humor, nurture, sensation). Further, participants indicated that the intervention increased their motivation for physical activity, occasioned meaningful shifts in perspective, increased their knowledge of various topics of interest, provided an opportunity to create valued connection with others, and provided health-related benefits. Participants suggested the intervention emphasize local history, nature, and cultural events. Conclusions: The photography-based, social media walking game with relatively simple game mechanics was well received and judged to be apt to bring about a wide variety of emotive experiences. A clear, geographically specific identity emerged as a key driver of interest for intervention content. Taking a celebratory technology approach holds promise for targeting autonomous motivations for physical activity in older adult women.
Visual instrument co-design embracing the unique movement capabilities of a dancer with physical disability

Abstract:This paper explores the design of an expressive visual instrument that embraces the unique movement style of a dancer living with physical disability. Through a collaboration between the dancer and an interaction designer/visual artist, the creative qualities of wearable devices for motion tracking are investigated, with emphasis on integrating the dancer's specific movement capabilities with their creative goals. The affordances of this technology for imagining new forms of creative expression play a critical role in the design process. These themes are drawn together through an experiential performance which augments an improvised dance with an ephemeral real-time visualisation of the performer's movements. Through practice-based research, the design, development and presentation of this performance work is examined as a 'testbed' for new ideas, allowing for the exploration of HCI concepts within a creative context. This paper outlines the creative process behind the development of the work, the insights derived from the practice-based research enquiry, and the role of movement technology in encouraging new ways of moving through creative expression.

Abstract:Robust evidence supports the role of physical activity and exercise in increasing longevity, decreasing morbidity and helping older adults maintain the highest quality of life attainable. However, the majority of older adults are not sufficiently physically active and interventions are needed to change their behaviors. Familial or intergenerational contact has been positively linked to health and well-being in older adults. Therefore, this study aimed to i) establish acceptability and test the functionality and useability of a novel technology-driven intergenerational intervention targeting physical activity and age stereotypes, and ii) identify any potential issues with recruitment and retention. Four familial dyads (adult ≥ 65 and child 7–11 years) engaged with the intervention. Working collaboratively during a four-week trial, they combined daily step-counts (acquired via any activity of their choice, using PA trackers) to complete a virtual walk route using online platform World Walking . Thematic analysis of three post-intervention focus groups (one older adult; one child; one additional parental cohort) identified eight subthemes: Engagement; Provision of a Positive Experience; Participant Stimuli; Generated Outcomes; Operationality; Limitations; Mediators; Facilitators, and Perceptions. Participants enjoyed and successfully engaged with the intervention; when designing behaviour change interventions for older adults, flexibility within pre-established routines, individual choice, and avoiding rigidly imposed structures, is important. Strategies to challenge negative perceptions of older adults' engagement with technology and PA should be integrated into recruitment processes.

Abstract:Background: Physical activity (PA) has wide-ranging, and well documented benefits for older adults, encompassing physical, cognitive, and mental well-being. The World Health Organization advocates for a minimum of 150–300 min of moderate intensity PA per week, supplemented by muscle-strengthening exercises. However, the rates of PA among older adults remain a concern. While portable technologies hold promises in promoting PA, sustaining long-term engagement continues to be a challenge. Objective: The aims of this study are to identify barriers and facilitators to PA in older adults, to develop an mHealth app promoting PA and an active healthy lifestyle in collaboration with community-dwelling older adults guided by the design thinking process, and to test it. Methods: A co-creative process was used, employing design thinking. Interviews were conducted to understand the needs of the target population and identify the problem of insufficient PA. Two cocreation sessions involving older adults and experts were conducted to generate innovative ideas. Participants were selected based on age (≥65 years), no severe illness, Dutch language proficiency, and active participation ability. Results were qualitatively analyzed and coded. Finally a prototype was developed and tested. Results: Interviews with older adults highlighted diverse perceptions of PA but unanimous agreement on its importance. They recognized health benefits such as improved mobility, balance, and reduced fall risk, while emphasizing the social and mental aspects. Barriers included poor health, time constraints, weather conditions and fear of falling. Cocreation sessions identified key topics: perception of a healthy lifestyle, coping strategies, mHealth App features, screen visualization, and tailored notifications, which led to the development of a mobile app promoting PA and an active lifestyle. The app was stepwise prototyped. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of promoting PA among older adults through a collaborative design thinking approach. However, the implementation of mHealth apps faces obstacles due to the digital divide, necessitating personalized solutions to bridge the gap. Moreover, it calls for further research to investigate the long-term impact of such interventions and explore behavior change patterns in this population.

Abstract:Interaction forms are beginning to make more use of the way we move our bodies in the physical and social world. This paper aims to contribute to a new generation of personal computing by showing how the medium of everyday clothing and dress can bring valuable perspectives to the study of human embodiment and movement. The author refers to ideas from fashion theory and clothing design that can contribute to a richer understanding of the many influences that convene emotions of style and identity. In order to indicate the potential of personal style as a social medium with relevance to human computer interaction (HCI), some existing artefacts that entail interaction through movement are referenced, along with research outcomes from biomechanics, dance and performance. In conclusion design strategies are constructed for new movement-based interaction concepts that can have relevance to the changing meanings of identity in twenty-first century mass society.

Abstract:Technological innovations offer many opportunities for design in the context of wearable computers and smart objects and their interaction with user and with ubiquitous computing systems. These technologies can be used to make new products and services designed to collect, increase and share information, knowledge, and emotion, through platforms, which support higher social awareness. If applied to the field of wellness, they can interact among each other, with the network and with the person, to drive and assist people, including socially vulnerable groups, towards an active and dynamic life, and they can become a means for monitoring the state of the user’s wellbeing and health. The aim of the research was to use the strategies of Human Centred Design to identify innovative scenarios and solutions able to involve people in an increasingly active and healthy life, as a commitment towards oneself and as a social responsibility.

Abstract:The performative installation DeviceD utilizes a network of systems toward facilitating interaction between dancer, digital media, and audience. Central to the work is a wearable haptic feedback system able to wirelessly deliver vibrotactile stimuli, with the latter initiated by the audience through posting on Twitter social media platform; the system in use searches for specific mentions, hashtags, and keywords, with positive results causing the system to trigger patterns of haptic biofeedback across the wearable's four actuator motors. The system acts as the intermediator between the audience's online actions and the dancer receiving physical stimuli; the dancer interprets these biofeedback signals according to Laban's Effort movement qualities, with the interpretation informing different states of habitual and conscious choreographic performance. In this article, the authors reflect on their collaborative process while developing DeviceD alongside a multidisciplinary team of technologists, detailing their experience of refining the technology and methodology behind the work while presenting it in three different settings. A literature review is used to situate the work among contemporary research on interaction over internet and haptics in performance practice; haptic feedback devices have been widely used within artistic work for the past 25 years, with more recent practice and research outputs suggesting an increased interest for haptics in the field of dance research. The authors detail both technological and performative elements making up the work, and provide a transparent evaluation of the system, as means of providing a foundation for further research on wearable haptic devices.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel game prototype that uses music and motion detection as preventive medicine for the elderly. Given the aging populations around the globe, and the limited resources and staff able to care for these populations, eHealth solutions are becoming increasingly important, if not crucial, additions to modern healthcare and preventive medicine. Furthermore, because compliance rates for performing physical exercises are often quite low in the elderly, systems able to motivate and engage this population are a necessity. Our prototype uses music not only to engage listeners, but also to leverage the efficacy of music to improve mental and physical wellness. The game is based on a memory task to stimulate cognitive function, and requires users to perform physical gestures to mimic the playing of different musical instruments. To this end, the Microsoft Kinect sensor is used together with a newly developed gesture detection module in order to process users’ gestures. The resulting prototype system supports both cognitive functioning and physical strengthening in the elderly.

Abstract:In this chapter we describe an approach aimed to promote personhood in technology via touchscreen interactions. The approach we propose employs co-design methods aimed at giving people living with dementia a strong voice to overcome usage barriers. Secondly, we propose interest-based design to engage and create meaningful social interactions. We illustrate the approach through two case studies demonstrating its successful application within playing games (two player games) and music (small collaborative ensembles). The chapter concludes with six recommendations for the design of creative and shared interactions for touchscreen technologies.

Abstract:In the aging society, the need for the elderly to remain mobile and independent is higher than ever. However, many aids supporting mobility often fail to target real needs and lack acceptance. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how value-based design can contribute to the design of mobility aids that address real needs and thus, lead to high acceptance. We elicited values, facilitators, and barriers of mobility of older adults via ten in-depth interviews. Next, we held co-creation sessions, resulting in several designs of innovative mobility aids, which were evaluated for acceptance via nine in-depth interviews. The interviews resulted in a myriad of key values, such as "independence from family" and "doing their own groceries." Design sessions resulted in three designs for a wheeled walker. Their acceptance was rather low. Current mobility device users were more eager to accept the designs than non-users. The value-based approach offers designers a close look into the lives of the elderly, thereby opening up a wide range of innovation possibilities that better fit their actual needs. Product service systems seem to be a promising focus for targeting human needs in mobility device design.

Abstract:The rapid aging of developed societies is creating an increasing number of cases of dementia and other aging-related diseases. Physical exercise has been shown to be beneficial for retaining cognitive, as well as physical function. In this paper we describe a system that we have developed for motivating older people to exercise. We begin by demonstrating how activity declines with age using an analysis of survey data (from 2003–2015) reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics on American Time Use Usage. We use multiple discriminant analysis to characterize which activities tend to become more, or less frequent as people age. We then review previous exergame approaches for motivating physical activity. After this we discuss a pedaling system that is designed to motivate and facilitate physical activity in the elderly using a combination of competition, social interaction, and engaging video content. We conclude with a discussion of how to adapt exergaming innovations to the context of use.

Abstract:We describe the design and implementation of a vision based interactive entertainment system that makes use of both involuntary and voluntary control paradigms. Unintentional input to the system from a potential viewer is used to drive attention-getting output and encourage the transition to voluntary interactive behaviour. The iMime system consists of a character animation engine based on the interaction metaphor of a mime performer that simulates non-verbal communication strategies, without spoken dialogue, to capture and hold the attention of a viewer. The system was developed in the context of a project studying care of dementia sufferers. Care for a dementia sufferer can place unreasonable demands on the time and attentional resources of their caregivers or family members. Our study contributes to the eventual development of a system aimed at providing relief to dementia caregivers, while at the same time serving as a source of pleasant interactive entertainment for viewers. The work reported here is also aimed at a more general study of the design of interactive entertainment systems involving a mixture of voluntary and involuntary control.

Abstract:Physical activity plays a major role both in prevention and in the treatment of afflictions linked to a modern sedentary lifestyle and improvements on life expectancy, for example though the application area of physiotherapy. Motion-based games for health (MGH) are being discussed in research and industry for their ability to play a supportive role in health, by offering motivation to engage in treatments, objective insights on status and development, and guidance regarding treatment activities. Difficulty settings in games are typically limited to few discrete tiers. For most serious applications in health, more fine-grained and far-reaching adjustments are required. The need for applying adjustments on complex sets of parameters can be overwhelming for patient-players and even trained professionals. Automatic adaptivity and efficient manual adaptability are thus major concerns for the design and development of MGH. Despite a growing amount of research on specific methods for adaptivity, general considerations on human-computer interaction with adaptable and adaptive MGH are rare. This thesis therefore focuses on establishing and augmenting theory for adaptability and adaptivity in human-computer interaction in the context of MGH. Working with older adults and people with Parkinson's disease as frequent target groups that can benefit from tailored activities, explorations and comparative studies that investigate the design, acceptance, and effectiveness of MGH are presented. The outcomes encourage the application of adaptivity for MGH following iterative human-centred design that considers the respective interests of stakeholders, provided that the users receive adequate information and are empowered to exert control over the automated system when desired or required, and if adaptivity is embedded in such a way that it does not interfere with the users' sense of competence or autonomy.

Abstract:Dance is a multi-modal artistic engagement whose group-delivered protocols have resulted in positive impacts on elderly health (Roberts et al 2017; Liu, Shen, and Tsai, 2021). Since the 2022 special topic issue on dance and the elderly was published (Markula, Clark and Goodwin 2022), reports from arts-science research collaborations have shown numerous ways person- and community-centered arts-based approaches have extended health across quality-of-life domains among aging adults (Fancourt and Steptoe, 2019; Golden, et al., 2023). For dance, such improvements have been reported from training in many different dance styles – structured (modern dance), improvisational, culturally stylized and technologically-assisted. The research is promising, particularly as many barriers to dancing have been removed and ease of access has improved for diverse populations. Nonetheless, important research gaps remain, specifically in articulating the social benefits of dance and their impact on agency (Karczmarska 2023; Jensen, et al., 2024; Kontos and Grigorovich, 2018). As an aesthetic art form, dance participation couples brain-body health with a range of communicative abilities bearing on relationality and meaning (Warburton 2011). Data on psychosocial skills of attention, listening, cooperation, self-regulation and empathy are not commonly collected or reported in quantitative research. Valuing such nontangible factors is particularly relevant first in promoting independence and in decreasing the perceived and actual burden of aging on general health and wellbeing. Further, critical to research advancement is the need to distinguish and differentiate functional and neuroplastic outcomes comparing dance protocols with comparable dosages of repetitive fitness exercise (Rehfeld, et al., 2018; Müller, et al., 2017). Last, the impact of aesthetic factors on health remains understudied (Chappell et al, 2021; Fontanesi 2021). For this special research topic issue on dance and health in older adults, our interest focused around the interaction of qualitative and quantitative factors. Specifically, we solicited studies that address how dance participation could foster embodied agency, as well as induce positive neuroplastic changes in the brains of the elderly across different populations. Manuscripts submitted reflected a global scope of collaborative research between dance educators and neurological and behavioral scientists, including Brazil, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Included in this collection are original clinical research, case series, conceptual analysis, and perspectives papers, in which researchers critically analyze interrelated connections and interactions of physical psychological, aesthetic, cultural and social meanings of dance for older persons. Although the collection offers a small sampling of the scope of the topic of embodied agency through dance (9 articles, plus Editorial), they represent an evocative variety of mixed methodologies in both quantitative science and qualitative phenomenological, sociological and cultural research. The issue opens with a perspective by Sheets-Johnstone, dance philosopher, who emphasizes the need to explicate the neurological and kinesthetic coordination dynamics embodied within dance, dynamics which are critical to engendering health of the whole body.In a conceptual analysis of an Italian study on dance and Parkinson's disease, Houston extrapolates 'soft skills' – 'anoetic knowledge,' data which, when expressed through dance, preface a sensate, emotional and affective state of mind - one critical to self- and other-care, vulnerability, patience, and other indicators of meaningful social engagement.Other samples from the collection include original clinical research: a randomized controlled study on social determinants of health by Worthen-Chadhuri et al., reporting improvements in autonomy, competence and relatedness for persons with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. In three studies, researchers designed digitally assisted technology in their dance/movement protocols: First, Delabary et al. reported sustained improvements from Brazilian dance for older adults living with Parkinson's disease, despite switching from on-site to online learning during the COVID 19 epidemic. Second, emplying a protocol or virtual ballet and wellness classes, Harrison et al. reported combined qualitative and quantitaqtive improvements in measures of social efficacy and gait and balance for a group of elderly women. Third, the use of group-delivery of visual assisted feedback of hand gestures by Hansen, et al. proved aesthetically 'irresistible,' in stimulating movement learning.The article by Barnstaple et al., speaks to the need for transdisciplinary researchers to rise to the challenge of capturing nuance in 'full bodied reporting.' Abstract:This article explores qualitative research methods that employ materiality and movement, images and body mapping to access research participant knowledges. We examine a methodologies workshop that we co-facilitated for academics and postgraduates. We position the workshop as a research assemblage, through which we facilitated four different methodological ‘moves’, to borrow from Barad's (2007) notion of ‘cuts’, to invite learning-knowing through the movement of affect. These embodied methodologies included: moving-writing sport, digital photovoice, movement improvisation, and body mapping somatic movement. Workshop participants were invited to experiment with each method as a means of engaging with tacit, or difficult to articulate knowledges. By exploring what these embodied ‘moves’ do to our ways of knowing, we traced the affective relations that entangle human and nonhuman worlds, self and others, researcher and researched through the workshop intra-actions. Our accounts of each method are diffracted through affective relations as we attune to bodies, vulnerabilities, openings, objects, texts, thoughts, surfaces, and senses, as means of (un)learning together. We articulate the kinds of productive (un)learning that moved us in different ways, and how embodied, feminist new materialist approaches might contribute to defamiliarised approaches to research.
