Abstract:In this paper, we model the multi-layer vertical underwater link as a cascaded channel and unify the performance analysis for the underwater optical communication (UWOC) system using generalized Gamma (GG), exponential GG (EGG), exponentiated Weibull (EW), and Gamma-Gamma ( ) oceanic turbulence models. We derive unified analytical expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) considering independent and non-identical (i.ni.d.) turbulent models and zero bore-sight model for pointing errors. We develop performance metrics of the considered UWOC system using outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity with asymptotic expressions for outage probability and average BER. We develop the diversity order of the proposed system to provide a better insight into the system performance at a high SNR. We also integrate a terrestrial OWC (TOWC) subjected to the combined effect of generalized Malága atmospheric turbulence, fog-induced random path gain, and pointing errors to communicate with the UWOC link using the fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. We analyze the performance of the mixed TWOC and multi-layer UWOC system by deriving PDF, CDF, outage probability, and average BER using the bivariate Fox H-function. We use Monte-Carlo simulation results to validate our exact and asymptotic expressions and demonstrate the performance of the considered underwater UWOC system using measurement-based parametric data available for turbulent oceanic channels.

Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), the random obstruction of light propagation by air bubbles can cause fluctuations in the incoming light intensity of a receiver. In this paper, we propose a statistical model for determining the received power by a receiver in the presence of air bubbles. First, based on real experiments of the behavior of air bubbles underwater, we propose statistical models for the generation, size, and horizontal distribution of each air bubble. Second, we mathematically derive the obstruction caused by the shadow of each bubble as it passes over the beam area. We then compute the combined obstruction of all generated air bubbles to determine the total obstructed power, which is a random variable due to the randomness of bubble behavior. Next, we find the first and second moments of the total obstructed power to model the statistical distribution of the obstructed received power by using the method of moments, which shows that the Weibull distribution suitably matches the simulation data. We also estimate the shape and scale parameters by using two derived moments. Furthermore, we also construct a statistical model of the received power with complete blockage in the presence of air bubbles and we derive the distribution of the composite channel model combining the proposed bubble-obstruction model with a Gamma-Gamma turbulence model. Finally, we obtain and verify the analytic forms of the average bit error rate and the capacity of UWOC systems under this newly proposed composite channel model.

Abstract:Despite the fact that underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) systems are able to provide high-data rate links with high security, the performance of these systems presents several limitations related to the maximum achievable distance due to attenuation, and scattering effects. Hence, quantifying the signal attenuation, and the time-dispersion produced by such effects represents a crucial work in channel modeling. Motivated by this, we present, for the first time, a novel, and unified impulse response modeling of underwater optical scattering channels based on the superposition of one impulsive component, and one dispersive component with two degrees of freedom. We provide analytical results for channel path loss, and channel impulse response (CIR) which are validated through Monte-Carlo simulations based on photon-tracing for clear ocean, coastal, and harbor waters. In order to provide a physical insight, the developed CIR is used to compute the root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread as a function of distance, and type of water, as well as to analyze in greater detail the impact of inter-symbol interference (ISI) on the data rate. These outcomes can be used for high-speed systems design, and optimization.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication is one of the critical technologies for buoy-based high-speed cross-sea surface communication, where the communication nodes are vertically deployed. Due to the vertically inhomogeneous nature of the underwater environment, seawater is usually vertically divided into multiple layers with different parameters that reflect the real environment. In this work, we consider a generalized UWOC channel model that contains$N$ layers. To capture the effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on channel statistics, we model each layer by a mixture Exponential-Generalized Gamma(EGG) distribution. We derive the PDF and CDF of the end-to-end SNR in exact closed-form. Then, unified BER and outage expressions using OOK and BPSK are also derived. The performance and behavior of common vertical underwater optical communication scenarios are thoroughly analyzed through the appropriate selection of parameters. All the derived expressions are verified via Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:In this work, we present a unified framework for the performance analysis of dual-hop underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems with amplify-and-forward fixed gain relays in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. Operating under either heterodyne detection or intensity modulation with direct detection, the UWOC is modeled by the unified mixture Exponential-Generalized Gamma distribution that we have proposed based on an experiment conducted in an indoor laboratory setup and has been shown to provide an excellent fit with the measured data under the considered lab channel scenarios. More specifically, we derive the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in exact closed-form in terms of the bivariate Fox's H function. Based on this CDF expression, we present novel results for the fundamental performance metrics such as the outage probability, the average bit-error rate (BER) for various modulation schemes, and the ergodic capacity. Additionally, very tight asymptotic results for the outage probability and the average BER at high SNR are obtained in terms of simple functions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dual-hop UWOC system can effectively mitigate the short range and both temperature gradients and air bubbles induced turbulences, as compared to the single UWOC link. All the results are verified via computer-based Monte-Carlo simulations.

Unified Statistical Channel Modeling and performance analysis of Vertical Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Links considering Turbulence-Induced Fading

Abstract:The reliability of a vertical underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) network is seriously impacted by turbulence-induced fading due to fluctuations in the water temperature and salinity, which vary with depth. To better assess the vertical UWOC system performances, an accurate probability distribution function (PDF) model that can describe this fading is indispensable. In view of the limitations of theoretical and experimental studies, this paper is the first to establish a more accurate modeling scheme for wave optics simulation (WOS) by fully considering the constraints of sampling conditions on multi-phase screen parameters. On this basis, we complete the modeling of light propagation in a vertical oceanic turbulence channel and subsequently propose a unified statistical model named mixture Weibull-generalized Gamma (WGG) distribution model to characterize turbulence-induced fading in vertical links. Interestingly, the WGG model is shown to provide a perfect fit with the acquired data under all considered channel conditions. We further show that the application of the WGG model leads to closed-form and analytically tractable expressions for key UWOC system performance metrics such as the average bit-error rate (BER). The presented results give valuable insight into the practical aspects of development of UWOC networks.

On Integrated Stochastic Channel Model For Underwater Optical Wireless Communications

Abstract:Absorption, scattering and turbulence are the three main characteristics for underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC). Among these three factors, absorption and scattering, respectively, characterize the energy loss and direction change when photons propagate through underwater wireless channels interacting with water molecules or suspended particles. In recent years, several analytical methods originated from free space optical communications are used to model various underwater channels, while only statistical models are employed to consider the effects of absorption and scattering containing all the scattering components. To facilitate in-depth theoretical analysis, we propose an expression to model the spatial probability density function of optical intensity for all scattering components in UOWC links in this paper. After that, we model the photodiode receiving process and give a clear explanation on the related parameters. Numerical results indicate that the bit-error rate performance deteriorates as the turbulence gets stronger, and larger multiple-input multiple-output array can alleviate the negative effect caused by fading. Besides, the effect of turbulence on BER is more important than that of the link geometry, and the increase in transmitted power will weaken the diversity gain from MIMO configuration.

Abstract:Underwater optical communication (UWOC) is a potential solution for broadband connectivity in oceans and seas for underwater applications providing high data rate transmission with low latency and high reliability. Recent measurement campaigns suggest generalized Gamma distribution as a viable model for oceanic turbulence. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a UWOC system by modeling the vertical underwater link as a multi-layer cascaded channel, each distributed according to independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) generalized Gamma random variables and considering the zero bore-sight model for pointing errors. We derive analytical expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the combined channel and develop performance metrics of the considered UWOC system using outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity. Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), absorption and scattering characterize the link properties since photons may suffer these two processes with energy loss and direction change, respectively, when interacting with water molecules or suspended particles. In this work, we consider the effects of absorption and scattering on the probability distribution, i.e., normalized intensity distribution, of photons in space and time domains. Our prior work proposed a stochastic channel model to represent the spatial–temporal probability distribution of propagated photons only for nonscattering and single scattering components of UWOC links. However, multiple scattering will dominate the scattering behavior of the underwater environment with long communication distance and/or more turbid water type. In this work, we take into account all three types of components including nonscattering, single and multiple scattering, and present a more general stochastic channel model which fits well with Monte Carlo simulations in turbid water environment such as coastal and harbor water. Based on the proposed channel model, we also evaluate the performance of path loss, scattering richness, and attenuation of UWOC links. Numerical results suggest that multiple scattering can compensate the path loss overestimated by traditional approaches. Furthermore, scattering richness and attenuation tend to increase but have opposite effects to raise and reduce the received probabilities of higher order scattered photons, respectively, as link range increases.

Abstract:A unified statistical model is proposed to characterize turbulence-induced fading in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channels in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradient for fresh and salty waters, based on experimental data. In this model, the channel irradiance fluctuations are characterized by the mixture exponential–generalized gamma (EGG) distribution. We use the expectation–maximization algorithm to obtain the maximum likelihood parameter estimation of the new model. Interestingly, the proposed model is shown to provide a perfect fit with the measured data under all channel conditions for both types of water. The major advantage of the new model is that it has a simple mathematical form making it attractive from a performance analysis point of view. Indeed, we show that the application of the EGG model leads to closed-form and analytically tractable expressions for key UWOC system performance metrics such as the outage probability, the average bit-error rate, and the ergodic capacity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first-ever comprehensive channel model addressing the statistics of optical beam irradiance fluctuations in underwater wireless optical channels due to both air bubbles and temperature gradient.

Abstract:A comprehensive multiparameter model is proposed for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channels to integrate the effects of absorption, scattering, and dynamic turbulence. The simulation accuracy is further improved by the combined use of the subharmonic method and the strict sampling constraint method by comparing the phase structure function with the theoretical value. The average light intensity and scintillation index are analyzed using the channel parameters of absorption, scattering, turbulence, flow velocity, and transmission distance. Under weak or medium turbulence, the bit error rate (BER) performance can be effectively improved by increasing the transmitting light power. The power penalty of a 50 m UWOC channel is 5.8 dBm from pure seawater to ocean water and 1.0 dBm from weak turbulence to medium turbulence, with the BER threshold of 10−6.

Abstract:In this paper, we have investigated the performance of underwater vertical wireless optical communication (UVWOC) link employing on–off key modulation in the presence of underwater turbulence, pointing errors and attenuation losses. The turbulence of the medium (assumed to be weak turbulence) has been modeled by employing the hyperbolic tangent log normal (HTLN) distribution. Temperature, pressure and salinity are parameters which can bring about variation of optical transmission characteristics with respect to depth of the ocean/sea. An in-depth study of optical transmission through vertical oceanic links requires the the underwater medium to be modeled as comprising of non-identical turbulent layers. Each of these independent and non-identical turbulence layers are modeled using the HTLN distribution function. The pointing error due to misalignment between source and detector is modeled using Rayleigh displacement pointing error. A novel closed-form expression to quantify the average bit error rate (BER) has been derived for single input single output (SISO) communication link. This expression has then been further generalized to make it applicable to the case of receive diversity schemes such as selection combining, majority logic combining and maximum ratio combining. The expression for the average BER associated with the UVWOC link for different pointing errors, different data rates and different types of ocean water has been determined. Novel closed-form expressions quantifying the outage probability and ergodic channel capacity have been derived for SISO and SC receive diversity schemes. The accuracy of all of the closed-form expressions derived in this paper have been validated using Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract:The propagation of light underwater is tied closely to the optical properties of water. In particular, the underwater channel imposes attenuation on the optical signal in the form of scattering, absorption, and turbulence. These attenuation factors can lead to severe spatial and temporal dispersion, which restricts communication to a limited range and bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a statistical model to estimate the probability density function of the temporal dispersion in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) based Internet of Underwater Things (IoUTs) using discrete histograms. The underwater optical channel is modeled using Monte Carlo simulations, and the effects of temporal dispersion are presented by measuring the magnitude response of the channel in terms of received power. The temporal response analysis is followed by an extensive performance evaluation in terms of bit error rate (BER). To facilitate in-depth theoretical analysis, we have measured and presented magnitude response and BER of the channel under different field-of-views (FoVs), apertures, and water types. The three main areas under study are (i) BER versus link distance behavior, (ii) temporal response of the channel, and (iii) effect of scattering on photon travel. Our study shows the two main factors that contribute to beam spreading and temporal dispersion are (i) diffusivity of the optical source and (ii) multiple scattering. Furthermore, our results suggest that temporal dispersion caused due to multiple scattering cannot be mitigated completely; however, it can be minimized by optimizing the receiver aperture.

Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) links, multiple scattering may cause temporal spread of beam pulse characterized by the impulse response, which therefore results in inter-symbol interference (ISI) and degrades system error performance. The impulse response of UWOC links has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally by researchers but has not been derived in simple closed-form to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we analyze the optical characteristics of seawater and present a closed-form expression of double Gamma functions to model the channel impulse response. The double Gamma functions model fits well with Monte Carlo simulation results in turbid seawater such as coastal and harbor water. The bit-error-rate (BER) and channel bandwidth are further evaluated based on this model for various link ranges. Numerical results suggest that the temporal pulse spread strongly degrades the BER performance for high data rate UWOC systems with on-off keying (OOK) modulation and limits the channel bandwidth in turbid underwater environments. The zero-forcing (ZF) equalization designed based on our channel model has been adopted to overcome ISI and improve the system performance. It is plausible and convenient to utilize this impulse response model for performance analysis and system design of UWOC systems.

Abstract:The underwater turbulence channel is modelled and a unified statistical distribution is applied for characterizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) propagation in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Based on Monte-Carlo simulations, the effects of turbulences are characterized by the multiple phase screens model considering both the coherence width and scintillation index. The phase screen samples are processed by the randomized spectral sampling discrete Fourier transform (DFT) technique. To validate the propagated field distribution, both the phase structure function and optical transfer function are derived and evaluated with the aid of ensemble-averaged results. The Generalized Gamma Distribution (GGD) enriched by an additional independent parameter is applied for modelling the probability density function (PDF) of both the reference-channels, fluctuating irradiance as well as the intermodal crosstalk irradiance between different OAM modes. Furthermore, based on the PDF, the performance metrics of both single input multiple output (SISO) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are analyzed, based on the average capacity, the bit-error rate and the outage probability.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate BER performance of underwater optical wireless MIMO communications with spatial modulation under weak turbulence. Channel impulse responses for typical ocean water links are obtained by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, which mainly considering the effects of absorption and scattering. Lognormal random variable is modeled as weak turbulence fading. The closed-form and upper bound average BER expressions are derived by applying maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection with optical combing (OC). In addition, numerical simulations results are compared to evaluate average BER of various turbulence conditions, transmission rates as well as system configurations.

Abstract:The received signal intensity fluctuation and communication performance of an underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system under the air bubble effects are experimentally investigated. For different bubble density and size, lognormal, gamma, Weibull, and generalized extreme value distributions are tested to fit the fluctuation of the signal intensity at the receiving end. The best fitting distribution is found to vary with bubble parameters. The communication system performance with on–off keying and pulse position modulation is further studied.

Abstract:This paper presents a simulation framework for modelling optical underwater turbulence in conjunction with absorption and scattering. Using this technique, the channel is evaluated in two ways: the turbulent statistics in different channel conditions; and the stationary channel characteristics. The turbulent statistics observed from the simulation show that the relative impact of turbulence on a received signal is lower in a highly scattering channel, showing an in-built resilience of these channels. Received intensity distributions are presented, showing that the commonly used Log-Normal fading model provides a good description of the fluctuations in received optical power due to the effect of turbulence. When considering stationary channel characteristics, the effect of turbulence induced scattering is shown to cause and increase both spatial and temporal spreading at the receiver plane. The impact of turbulence - as measured using this new modelling framework - on the channel capacity is equally investigated to provide context to the implications of the channel modelling findings on underwater optical wireless communications link performance.

Abstract:More often than not, currents due to gravity, wind friction, and heterogeneous water density cause frequent drifts of the end-users to random locations creating transmission problems in an underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) network. The location uncertainty effect on the overall network performance in harsh environments, including submarine ones, is an appealing issue that needs to be adequately addressed in the existing technical literature. The present work takes account of a vertical UOWC link where a fixed transmitter at the sea surface illuminates towards the seabed following a Lambertian pattern. In this way, a randomly placed receiver inside a spherical cone is served, and the problem is treated with three-dimensional stochastic geometry methods. In the sequel, the complete statistical behavior of the random distributions of the channel gain and the instantaneous electrical signal-to-noise ratio is estimated. Moreover, some critical network performance metrics, including the outage probability and the bit-error rate for intensity modulation/direct detection with on-off keying and -ary pulse position modulation, are derived, whereas indicative numerical results are illustrated adequately through a series of appropriate figures.

Performance Assessment of Underwater-to-Air Optical Wireless Communication System With the Effect of Solar Noise and Sea Surface Conditions

Abstract:This study focuses on the performance evaluation of underwater-to-air Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) and data transmission between Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs). Facing challenges from the harsh marine environment and optical signal attenuation, we utilized Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to comprehensively assess the system performance. Our investigation incorporated crucial elements impacting signal attenuation, including particulate matter, bubbles, rough sea conditions, and solar noise. By integrating the in-situ Inherent Optical Properties (IOPs) data and Hall-Novarini (HN) model for bubble characteristics, we constructed a robust simulation framework. To accurately estimate optical beam fluctuations caused by surface waves, we employed the three-dimensional theoretical ECKV (Elfouhaily, Chapron, Katsaros, and Vandemark) model for the water-air interface layer. The received power calculated for varying wind conditions, with and without bubbles, revealed fluctuations attributed to surface waves' interaction with the optical signal. Moreover, we observed a decrease in received power due to the bubble effects and the water-air interface layer. Solar radiation's significant impact on the transmitted signal, especially at the airborne receivers, was evident through the BER performance analysis. We conducted extensive experiments for measuring the solar radiance and evaluating its influence on the BER performance, particularly noting degradation during zenith sun positions and increased errors in scenarios with higher solar glint. Additionally, our investigation highlighted the adverse effect of sea surface bubbles on received solar power and the findings revealed that the BER performance is significantly reduced in the presence of bubbles rather than the scenarios without bubbles.
