Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has gained significant attention as a commercially available biodegradable and biocompatible polymer. However, the brittleness of PLA greatly limits its application. Blending PLA with another rubbery polymer such as thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a simple strategy to toughen PLA. In this study, a largely toughened PLA has been successfully prepared by melt blending with TPU through interfacial compatibilization induced by the simultaneous addition of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (NPs) and in situ cross‐linking reaction. The torque evolution during melt mixing and rheological analysis confirm a successful dynamic vulcanization process. Scanning electron microscopy images indicate that, dynamic vulcanization and adding NPs synergistically compatibilize the TPU and PLA phases leading to a considerable interfacial adhesion between the phases. Simultaneous addition of NPs at an optimum amount of 5 wt% and in situ cross‐linking reaction significantly improve the elongation at break, and tensile toughness of the PLA/TPU blend as they are achieved 311%, and 91 MJ/m3, respectively. Both dynamic vulcanization and NPs play their role independently in the compatibilization of PLA and TPU phases inducing substantial shear yielding of the matrix phase under stress resulting in a highly toughened blend. The microstructural properties of the blends are studied by rheological analysis.

Abstract:Journal of Elastomers &Plastics, Ahead of Print. Among biobased and biodegradable polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) is most widely used one. However, its poor mechanical properties need to be enhanced. In this study, PLA blend film with improved mechanical properties were developed without compromising any bio-content. For this, natural rubber derivative with acetate pendant group (ANR) and PLA blend films were prepared. First, natural rubber was epoxidized, and then partial acetylation was achieved by the ring-opening reaction of the epoxy groups. The epoxidation and the acetylation were examined by FTIR analysis. 1H-NMR spectrum revealed a 29% epoxidation and 8.25% acetylation degree. The Tg of natural rubber (−66°C) increased to −41°C and −31°C after epoxidation and acetylation, respectively. The compatibility of ENR and ANR with PLA was evident from the DSC results and Molau test. The morphology of PLA blend film containing 25 wt% of ANR (ANR25) was observed as well-dispersed fine droplets by SEM images. The tensile strength, elastic modulus, and yield strength of ANR25 were measured as 11.6 MPa, 397.3 MPa, and 6.9 MPa, respectively. These values are considerably higher than neat PLA film. Compared to reported studies on PLA toughening so far, increments in both the strength and elongation of ANR25 were observed by tensile tests. Moreover, highest toughness among all samples was determined as 18.8 MJm−3 for ANR25, which is 1.8 times higher than neat PLA. Thus, a strong and tough bio-based PLA blend was developed for film application such as packaging and sheeting.

Abstract:Renewable and biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has received great interest in the last decade. However, PLA exhibits high stiffness but low toughness, which largely restricts its applications. Blending with elastomers is a simple and effective method to improve the toughness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), but the tensile strength of PLA generally decreases after adding elastomers. In this work, we manufacture the PLA/natural rubber (NR) (80/20) thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) with balanced stiffness-toughness through incorporating the modified SiO2 nanoparticles. The result of transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis shows that SiO2 nanoparticles modified by appropriate Bis-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide (TESPT) uniformly disperse in the interface, which not only enhances the strength of NR phase but also improves the interfacial compatibility of the PLA/NR TPV. Therefore, the toughness of the TPV could be improved (71.6 kJ/m2 at room temperature and 7.61 kJ/m2 at −30 °C) by adding low content of SiO2 nanoparticles (15 parts per hundreds of rubbers (phr) in NR or 3 phr in the TPV), while the tensile strength of the TPV remains at 34.6 MPa. Further, the co-continuous PLA/NR/SiO2@TEPST TPVs have a potential to be applied in 3D printing field.

Abstract:The brittle behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA composites with inorganic filler limits their applications; the addition of a toughening agent, such as a rubbery phase, was selected to transform the brittle to ductile behavior for versatility in various applications. This work aims to study the properties of PLA and PLA composite with filled nanosized hydroxyapatite (nHA) after adding modified natural rubber (MoNR), which acts as a toughening agent. MoNR refers to poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-grafted deproteinized natural rubber. nHA was prepared from fish scales. Its characteristics were investigated and was confirmed to be comparable to those of commercial grade. PLA-MoNR at various MoNR contents and PLA/nHA composites with/without MoNR were prepared by melt mixing. Their morphology, mechanical, and thermal properties were observed and investigated. Samples with MoNR added showed the dispersion of spherical particles, indicating incompatibility. However, the mechanical properties of PLA-MoNR, which had MoNR added at 10 phr, showed toughening behavior (increased impact strength by more than two times compared to that of neat PLA). The PLA/nHA composite with MoNR showed the same result. The addition of MoNR in the composite increased its impact strength by 1.27 times compared to the composite without MoNR. MoNR can be a stress concentrator, resulting in toughened PLA and PLA/nHA composite.

Abstract:In this work, a facile and efficient strategy known as 'dynamic self-vulcanization of dual difunctional monomers' was reported to toughen poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with in-situ formed crosslinked bio-polyurethane (PCPUE) phase from plant oil-derived hydrogenated dimer diol (Pripol) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). By simply adjusting equivalent ratios ( n NCO / n OH ) of complementary functional groups between these two difunctional toughening monomers from 1.0 to 2.2 while fixing their total feeding content at 20 wt%, the notched impact strength (IS) and phase morphologies of PLA blends can be tailored in a broad range. When the ratio reached 1.6, the maximum IS value up to 87.1 kJ/m 2 (about 28 times that of neat PLA) was achieved with an elongation-at-break of ~223 %. Based on the analysis on reaction mechanism and phase morphologies, the optimum interfacial compatibility between PLA and PCPUE phases in junction with the proper crosslinking density of rubbery PCPUE phase was considered to be responsible for such a remarkable improvement in impact toughness.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered significant interest as a bio-based polymer due to its favorable thermal and processing characteristics, as well as its notable economic and environmental benefits. However, the drawbacks such as flammability and poor toughness of PLA severely constrained its applications in more fields. Here, based on the outstanding flame-retardant properties of core-shell flame retardant (CSFR) and the toughening potential of natural rubber (NR), we synthesized inorganic-organic hybrid of CSFR-NR using an aqueous synthesis to synchronous optimization of the comprehensive performance of PLA. The as-prepared CSFR-NR with "hard core and soft shell" possess the ability to promote char formation and facilitate uniform dispersion in the PLA matrix. Consequently, the PLA/CSFR-NR showed an excellent flame retardancy with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31.5 % and UL-94 V-0 rating and synergistic toughening effect with absolutely improvement in elongation at break and notched izod impact strength, achieving a balance between the fire safety and mechanical performance. Moreover, the degradation rate of PLA has also been substantially promoted by CSFR-NR in simulated seawater. Hence, this study offers a straightforward, efficient, and environmentally friendly strategy for creating high-performance flame retardant and toughened bioplastics.

Abstract:Encapsulation represents one feasible approach of preparing powdered natural rubber. Herein, we demonstrated the preparation of polymethyl methacrylate-grafted natural rubber (PMMA-g-NR) powders through emulsion polymerization followed by spray drying and investigated its impact reinforcement effect after blending with polylactic acid (PLA). The effects of feeding order, initiator concentration (CHPO/TEPA), monomer concentration (MMA) and reaction time on the grafting efficiency and yield were investigated. 1H-NMR and FTIR analyses confirmed the formation of PMMA-g-NR powder with high grafting efficiency (∼85%). TEM observations revealed the core-shell structure of the composite powder particles. DSC and TGA analyses proved that the PMMA-g-NR powder possessed improved thermal properties compared to neat NR. Impact strength of PLA/PMMA-g-NR blends were improved by 4.5-fold by the spray-dried composite powder prepared using 25 phr MMA and 1 phr CHPO/TEPA with 5 hours reaction time. The enhanced mechanical properties were attributed to the microstructures and high surface areas of PMMA-g-NR powder.

Abstract:For polylactide (PLA) toughening modification by rubbery materials, the toughness generally improved at the expense of lowered mechanical strength even after interfacial compatibilization. In this work, an "integration toughening mechanism" was developed for preparing PLA-based materials with simultaneous high strength and high toughness by constructing an integrative physical network throughout both the toughening phase and PLA matrix. A multiblock copolymer containing polycaprolactone (PCL) blocks, PLA blocks, and ionic segments with a random block sequence was prepared and then incorporated with PLA for constructing a physical network based on ionic interactions among copolymers. When subjected to dynamic impact stress, the yield and plastic deformation take place in both the PCL toughening phase and the amorphous region of PLA to dissipate impact energy owing to the integrative network, resulting in a high impact toughness of the material (46.5 kJ/m<sup>2</sup>). Meanwhile, when subjected to static tensile stress, the integrative network effectively inhibited the large-scale deformation of the PCL phase and promoted the whole system including those rigid crystalline regions to resist external stress. Abstract:Poly(ethene-co-1-butene)-graft-methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile (PEB-g-MAN) was prepared by suspension grafting copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acrylonitrile(AN) onto PEB. PEB-g-MAN/SAN resin blends (ABMS) were prepared by blending PEB-g-MAN with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN resin). The effects of AN/(MMA+AN) feed ratio (f(AN)), PEB/(PEB+MMA+AN) feed ratio (f(PEB)) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) dosage on the monomer conversion ratio (CR), rubber's grafting ratio (GR), grafting efficiency (GE) of the copolymerization and the toughening effect of PEB-g-MAN on the SAN resin were investigated. FTIR quantitative analysis showed that when the weight percent of AN unit in the unextracted product was 21.5 wt% with f(AN) of 25 wt%, the toughening effect of unextracted PEB-g-MAN on SAN resin was the highest. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis showed that when f(AN) was 25 wt%, the grafted copolymer had the lowest molecular weight and ABMS had highest toughness. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that the highest toughness occurred when the phase structure of ABMS was cocontinuous with f(AN) of 25 wt%. When f(AN) was 25 wt% PEB-g-MAN domains have numerous small SAN domains in them, which was occlusion structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that the ABMS fracture surfaces had plastic flow visible, which looked like a craze fibers morphology, for the sample with highest impact strength (f(AN) = 25 wt%). Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA) showed that the miscibility of the PEB phase and SAN phase improved after graft copolymerization of MMA and AN onto PEB.

Abstract:In this study, the effectiveness of using epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) to compatibilize blend of polylactide (PLA) with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) has been examined. Interfacial interaction analysis revealed that ENR had higher affinity with PBAT. To achieve better compatibility, a two-step procedure was developed involving blending PLA with ENR first, followed by blending with PBAT. Graft copolymers consisting of PLA, ENR, and PBAT were formed through melt blending, resulting in improved compatibility of PLA blends with PBAT. As the ENR content increased, the dispersed PBAT phase exhibited a gradual reduction in particle size. After compatibilization, the blends showed significantly improved toughness. Ternary PLA/PBAT/ENR blend containing 2 wt% ENR exhibited a drastic increase in break strain, measuring at 589%. This was approximately 2.7 times greater than the break strain of the binary blend PLA/PBAT (221%). The mechanism for tensile toughening of the PLA/PBAT/ENR ternary blends was interfacial bonding cavitation-initiated matrix plastic deformation. Compatibilization of PLA/PBAT blends with ENR is with great promise as it doesn’t compromise the biobased carbon content and sustainability of the materials.

Abstract:Due to the environmental pollution caused by the petroleum-based polymer, poly (lactic acid) (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer that obtained from natural and renewable sources, has attracted widespread attention. However, the brittleness of PLA greatly limits its application. In this study, the super toughened PLA-based blends were obtained by compatibilizing the PLA/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) blends with the polyurethane elastomer prepolymer (PUEP) as an active compatibilizer. The mechanical properties, thermal properties and corresponding toughening mechanism of PLA/TPU/PUEP system were studied by tensile test, instrumented impact test, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All the results demonstrate that the isocyanate (−NCO) group in PUEP is successfully reacted with the –OH groups at both sides of the PLA and the obtained polyurethane (PU)∼PLA copolymer (PU ∼ cõ PLA) significantly improves the interfacial compatibility of PLA/TPU blends. The gradually refined dispersed phase size and fuzzy phase interface as displayed in SEM images suggest a good interfacial compatibilization in the PLA/TPU/PUEP blends, probably due to the isocyanate reaction between PLA and PUEP. And the interfacial reaction and compatibilization among the components led to the formation of super toughened PLA/TPU/PUEP blends. And the instrumented impact results indicate that most of the impact toughness is provided by the crack propagation rather than the crack initiation during the entire fracture process.

Abstract:The effect of the sequence to add dicumyl peroxide (DCP) to the polylactic acid (PLA) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blending was investigated. According to the tensile and impact resistance tests, premixing DCP with ENR resulted in blends with better mechanical properties where nearly 20 times improvement of impact strength was observed at 30wt% ENR. In addition, the chemical, morphological, and thermal properties of PLA/ENR blends were investigated via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis, respectively. When DCP is premixed with ENR, DCP could act more effectively as a vulcanizing agent than a compatibilizer, whereas the DCP mixing with PLA/ENR blending of PLA/ENR might lead to more PLA chain scission than DCP premixing with ENR. This study indicated that the toughening of PLA/ENR blends can be significantly enhanced when high ENR vulcanization together with the formation of small PLA phases.

Abstract:Different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents on high-toughness polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-coterephthalate) (PBAT) blends were prepared by one-step melt blending using multifunctional epoxy oligomers (ADR) as reactive compatibilizer. During reactive blending, the PLA or PBAT chains were grafted onto the CNTs by allowing the carboxyl or hydroxyl groups to react with epoxy groups and form a branched CNTs-based copolymer. The branched copolymer at the interface between PLA and PBAT was dispersed through emulsion to improve the polymer-polymer or polymer-nanoparticle entanglement between the molecular chains. Interfacial adhesion, interface layer stability, and system viscoelasticity and compatibility were improved as indicated by rheological curves and dynamic mechanical analysis. The strength and toughness of the sample were simultaneously improved by the addition of CNTs and ADR. The impact strength reached 35.3 kJ/m2, which was approximately 7 times that of the PLA/PBAT blend, and the tensile strength was also increased from 33.6 MPa to 42.8 MPa. The properties of PLA/PBAT blend synergistically modified by ADR and CNTs were obviously better than those of PLA/PBAT blend modified by ADR or CNTs. The toughening synergistic effect of ADR and CNTs on PLA/PBAT was observed with efficiency reaching 3.05. With the further understanding of the toughening mechanism, the branched CNTs-based copolymers and CNTs clusters induce a synergistic effect, which increased the interfacial adhesion and ability of energy dissipation and stress transmission.
Design of biodegradable PLA/PBAT blends with balanced toughness and strength via interfacial compatibilization and dynamic vulcanization

Abstract:In this work, we report that super-toughened and high-strength polylactide/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blends can be successfully prepared by interfacial compatibilization and dynamic vulcanization during reactive melt-blending with small amounts (0.5–3 wt %) of epoxy-functional styrene-acrylic oligomers (ESA). The results show that the compatibilization is realized with the grafting of some PLA and PBAT chains onto ESA backbones to in-situ generate PLA- graft -PBAT copolymers at the blend interface. Meanwhile, the ESA-mediated vulcanization gives rise to the highly cross-linked PBAT particles with a unique network-like distribution in the PLA matrix. Both the strengthened interfaces and networked PBAT particles are favorable to the triggering of massive matrix plastic deformation required for effective energy dissipation and thus the toughening effect is substantially enhanced. Impressively, the notched Izod impact toughness and elongation at break of the PLA/PBAT (70/30) blends can reach as high as 62.4 kJ/m 2 and 232%, while the tensile strength increases from 44.2 MPa to 51.5 MPa, indicating a balanced toughness and strength. Most notably, it is demonstrated that tuning the molecular structure of ESA (i.e., epoxy group density and backbone length) is essential to improving the interfacial adhesion and phase morphology, enabling high toughening efficiency. Our facile yet robust strategy presents an unprecedented opportunity for the development of high-performance fully biodegradable PLA blends.

Abstract:The interfacial compatibilization and dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in incompatible poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene terephthalate adipate) (PLA/PBAT) composites are key points for evaluating the performance of the composites. To address this, a novel compatibilizer, sulfonate imidazolium polyurethane (IPU) containing PLA and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) segments modified CNTs, employed in conjunction with multi-component epoxy chain extender (ADR) to toughen synergistically PLA/PBAT composites. The thermal stability, rheological behavior, morphology, and mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT composites were performed by TGA, DSC, dynamic rheometer, SEM, tensile, and notched Izod impact measure. Moreover, the elongation at break and notched Izod impact strength of PLA5/PBAT5/4C/0.4I composites achieved 341 % and 61.8 kJ/m 2 respectively, whose tensile strength was 33.7 MPa. The interfacial compatibilization and adhesion were enhanced because of the interface reaction catalyzed by IPU and the refined co-continuous phase structure. The CNTs non-covalently modified by IPU that bridged at the PBAT phase and interface transferred the stress into the matrix, prevented the development of microcracks, and absorbed impact fracture energy in the form of pull-out of the matrix, inducing shear yielding and plastic deformation. This new type of compatibilizer with modified CNTs is of great significance for realizing the high performance of PLA/PBAT composites.

Abstract:This paper details a new method for improving the interfacial bonding between PA66 short fiber (PSF) and natural rubber (NR) by reaction of the methacrylic acid (MAA)-grafting-modified PSF with rubber during vulcanization. Carbon-carbon double bonds introduced to the SF surface by MAA grafting were opened, and a vulcanization reaction occurred between the modified PSF and rubber in the presence of sulfur. The chemical reactions were verified by FTIR and XPS. The processing rheological behaviors of the compounded composites were investigated by a rubber processing analyzer (RPA). The morphology of modified PSF was characterized by AFM and SEM. The improved interfacial bonding was confirmed by DMA, which enhanced deformational stress at definite elongation of the NR/PSF composites. The volume concentration of the MAA solution for grafting on the SF surface had a great influence on the interfacial bonding and mechanical properties of the composites; when the volume concentration was 30 %, the modified PSF-reinforced NR/CB had the best interfacial bonding and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Polylactic acid has stood out among bio-based polymers for its usage in the food packaging industry and biomedical fields. Through the melt mixing process, the toughened poly(lactic) acid (PLA) was prepared with polyolefin elastomer (POE), incorporated via various ratios of nanoclay and a fixed amount of nanosilver particles (AgNPs). The correlation between the compatibility and morphology, mechanical properties, and surface roughness of samples with nanoclay was studied. The calculated surface tension and melt rheology confirmed the interfacial interaction demonstrated by droplet size, impact strength, and elongation at break. Each blend sample exhibited matrix-dispersed droplets, and the size of POE droplets steadily dropped with increasing nanoclay content, corresponding to the enhanced thermodynamic affinity between PLA and POE. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) acknowledged that the inclusion of nanoclay in the PLA/POE blend ameliorated the mechanical performance by preferable localization in the interface of used components. The optimum value of elongation at break was acquired at about 32.44%, where the incorporation of 1 wt.% nanoclay led, respectively, to 171.4% and 24% enhancement rather than the PLA/POE blend with the composition of 80/20 and the virgin PLA. Similarly, the impact strength reached 3.46 ± 0.18 kJ m−1 as the highest obtained amount, showing the proximity of 23% progress to the unfilled PLA/POE blend. Surface analysis indicated that adding nanoclay caused the augment of surface roughness from 23.78 ± 5.80 μm in the unfilled PLA/POE blend to 57.65 ± 18.2 μm in PLA/POE contained 3 wt.% nanoclay. Rheological measurements implied that organoclay resulted in the strengthening of melt viscosity as well as the rheological parameters such as storage modulus and loss modulus. Han plot further showed that the storage modulus is always higher than the loss modulus in all prepared PLA/POE nanocomposite samples, corresponding to the restriction of polymer chains mobility induced by the formation of strong molecular interaction between nanofillers and polymer chains.

Abstract:Polymer modification using silicone rubber represents a promising avenue for enhancing physico-mechanical properties. However, achieving optimal performance through direct blending is hindered by the poor interface compatibility between silicone rubber and the matrix. In this study, we prepared super-tough thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) of polylactic acid/silicone rubber through dynamic vulcanization with PLA, methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MVQ), glycidyl methacrylate grafted MVQ (MVQ- g -GMA), and fumed silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 ). The impact of the SiO 2 addition in MVQ on the morphology, mechanical properties, crystallization, and thermal properties of the TPVs was investigated. The results showed that MVQ- g -GMA and SiO 2 exhibited a synergistic compatibilization effect significantly improving the interfacial adhesion between PLA and MVQ. Therefore, the impact and tensile strength of the TPVs increased from 8.0 kJ/m 2 and 22.2 MPa to 62.6 kJ/m 2 and 36.7 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the TPVs also presented good low-temperature toughness with a maximum impact strength of 40.4 kJ/m 2 at −20 °C. Additionally, improvements in thermal stability and crystallization rate were also observed. Overall, combining organic and inorganic synergistic compatibilization is a feasible and effective method to fabricate outstanding low-temperature toughness to PLA.
