Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental endocrine disruptors, which may modify the bone mineralization. However, epidemiological evidences on this issue were scant. We aimed to investigate the associations of PAHs with bone mass density (BMD) and osteoporosis based on a nationally-representative sample from general U.S. population. Data utilized were extracted from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Nine urinary PAHs (U-PAHs) metabolites were measured as exposure biomarkers. Associations of specific U-PAHs with BMD and osteoporosis were estimated by multivariable adjusted linear regression models and logistic regression models, respectively. Compared with women at the first tertiles, those at the third tertiles of 1-Hydroxynapthalene, 2-Hydroxyfluorene, 3-Hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-Hydroxyphenanthrene and 9-Hydroxyfluorene had significantly decreased BMD levels [coefficient (beta)= -0.023 to -0.014, p < 0.05] or increased likelihoods of osteoporosis [odds ratios (ORs) = 1.86 to 3.36, p < 0.05] at different bone sites. Whereas, elevated BMD levels (beta = 0.021, p < 0.05) at trochanter and decreased likelihoods of osteoporosis (OR = 0.33, p < 0.05) at intertrochanter were observed among women at the second tertiles of 1-Hydroxypyrene and 2-Hydroxynapthalene, respectively. Similar results were found for all the population, i.e., combination of men and women. Most of the significant associations disappeared among adult men only. Furthermore, Associations between U-PAHs and BMD were stronger for postmenopausal women when compared with premenopausal group. In conclusion, associations of U-PAHs with BMD and osteoporosis varied by specific U-PAHs and bone sites, as well as menopausal status and genders in U.S. adults. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The Association Between Exposure To Environmental Bisphenol A And Gonadotropic Hormone Levels Among Men

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is an extensively used chemical with endocrine disrupting properties. Although animal and in vivo studies have suggested possible effects of BPA on levels of gonadotropic hormones, human studies are limited and inconclusive. The study examined whether environmental BPA exposure was associated with gonadotropic hormones levels in men. A total of 560 men aged 18-55 years were recruited from Sandu County, Guizhou Province, China. We collected urine samples for measurement of BPA, and blood samples for measurement of reproductive hormones. We examined serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and total testosterone (T). Relative risk (RR) was obtained by log-binominal regression to explore the association between urinary BPA level and hormone levels. BPA was detected in 70.4% of urine samples, with a geometric mean of 0.50 mu g/gCr. Men with detectable levels of BPA had a 1.52-fold increased risk of having a high LH level (> 75 th percentile) when compared with men with undetectable levels of BPA, after adjustment for potential confounders (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04 +/- 2.21). The association persisted and slightly intensified among current smokers (adjusted RR (aRR) = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.05 +/- 2.95), while it weakened among non-smokers (aRR = 1.17, 95% CI: 0.69 +/- 1.96). Urinary BPA level was associated with an increased FSH level among smokers (aRR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.01 +/- 2.67). Urinary BPA level was inversely associated with total T level among males with body max index (BMI) >= 25 kg/m(2) although this association was of borderline significance (aRR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.26 +/- 1.05). In conclusion, environmental exposure to BPA was associated with increased serum levels of LH and FSH in male smokers, along with decreased serum levels of total T in men with BMI >= 25 kg/m(2). These findings suggest that the effects of environmental BPA exposure on hormone levels might be modified by smoking and BMI.

Abstract:PURPOSE To study and contrast the measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) with an air non-contact tonometer (Canon TX-10) with that obtained with the Goldmann tonometer. METHODS Intraocular pressure was measured in 649 subjects with both the pneumotonometer and the Goldmann tonometer. Statistically significant differences between the results obtained by both tonometers and the influence of variables including age, corneal thickness, and corneal curvature were studied. RESULTS The mean age of the study population was 48.5 years, standard deviation (SD) 7.6 years, with a range of 22-68 years. The mean IOP was 15.4, SD 2.7 mm Hg, (range 8-25) with the Goldmann tonometer and 15.6, SD 2.9 mm Hg (range 8-29) with the pneumotonometer. There was a statistically significant difference between the measurements using the air pneumotonometer and the Goldmann tonometer (p<0.001). The mean of the differences between both tonometers was 0.24, SD 2 mm Hg. Seventy-five percent of measurements were in the range of +/-1, 85% in +/-2, and 95% in the Bland and Altman's interval of 4.42, -3.94. These differences were more significant for higher values of IOP, in thicker corneas and in corneas with greater curvature. A correlation between IOP and age was not found (p=0.247). CONCLUSIONS The pneumotonometer is a useful and reliable instrument for measuring the IOP providing there is additional checking in cases with borderline values of IOP, or excessive corneal thickness and/or curvature.

Abstract:The link between biological aging and prostate cancer (PCa) risk, particularly as indicated by elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, remains uncertain. This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001–2010) to explore this association. Biological age was assessed using Klemera-Doubal method age (KDMAge) and phenotypic age (PhenoAge). PCa was identified through self-reported diagnoses, and highly probable PCa was determined by PSA levels. We analyzed the prevalence of PCa and PSA-defined highly probable PCa across quartiles of biological age measures using weighted chi-square and linear trend tests. Associations were evaluated using weighted multiple logistic regression models. Among 7,209 and 6,682 males analyzed, the overall weighted prevalence of PCa was 2.86%, increasing to 9.60% in those aged 65 and above. A significant rise in PCa prevalence was observed with higher quartiles of KDMAge or PhenoAge (P for trend < 0.001), particularly in those under 65. In this younger group, higher PhenoAge acceleration quartiles were linked to increased PCa prevalence and higher risk of PCa (OR = 1.50, P = 0.015) as well as highly probable PCa in those without a diagnosis (OR = 1.28, P = 0.031). These findings suggest that accelerated biological aging is associated with an increased risk of PCa and may indicate early risk as signaled by PSA levels, even in those without a PCa diagnosis.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most widely consumed endocrine disrupting chemicals, has been found to be associated with a variety of diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have investigated the association of BPA with long-term health outcomes. This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2016. The NHANES data were linked to mortality data (with a follow-up point of December 31, 2019). The urinary BPA concentration was estimated by adjusting for urinary creatinine (BPA/Cr, ng/mg). Complex sampling-weighted multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the hazard ratios (HRs) of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among participants with different urinary BPA concentrations. This study included 9243 adult participants. The median follow-up duration was 9.1 years. During this period, 1200 all-cause deaths occurred, of which 374 were cardiovascular deaths. Compared to the lowest BPA/Cr quartile group, the adjusted HRs of the highest BPA/Cr quartile group were 1.76 (95% CI, 1.23–2.52) for cardiovascular mortality and 1.21 (95% CI, 0.98–1.49) for all-cause mortality. In addition, there was a significant interaction between sex and BPA/Cr ( P for interaction = 0.044) for the risk of cardiovascular mortality. The adjusted HR for cardiovascular mortality in female participants was 2.80 (95% CI, 1.56–5.02), while that in male participants was only 1.34 (95% CI, 0.79–2.24). Higher urinary BPA is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality among US adults. The effect of BPA on cardiovascular mortality may be more pronounced in women than in men.

Abstract:IMPORTANCE Bisphenol A (BPA) is a major public health concern because of its high-volume industrial production, ubiquitous exposure to humans, and potential toxic effects on multiple organs and systems in humans. However, prospective studies regarding the association of BPA exposure with long-term health outcomes are sparse. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of BPA exposure with all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality among adults in the United States. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This nationally representative cohort study included 3883 adults aged 20 years or older who participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2008 and provided urine samples for BPA level measurements. Participants were linked to mortality data from survey date through December 31, 2015. Data analyses were conducted in July 2019. EXPOSURES Urinary BPA levels were quantified using online solid-phase extraction coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. RESULTS This cohort study included 3883 adults aged 20 years or older (weighted mean [SE] age, 43.6 [0.3] years; 2032 women [weighted, 51.4%]). During 36 514 person-years of follow-up (median, 9.6 years; maximum, 13.1 years), 344 deaths occurred, including 71 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 75 deaths from cancer. Participants with higher urinary BPA levels were at higher risk for death. After adjustment for age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, dietary and lifestyle factors, body mass index, and urinary creatinine levels, the hazard ratio comparing the highest vs lowest tertile of urinary BPA levels was 1.49 (95% CI, 1.01-2.19) for all-cause mortality, 1.46 (95% CI, 0.67-3.15) for cardiovascular disease mortality, and 0.98 (95% CI, 0.40-2.39) for cancer mortality. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this nationally representative cohort of US adults, higher BPA exposure was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Further studies are needed to replicate these findings in other populations and determine the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Introduction: There is evidence suggesting that Bisphenol A (BPA) is associated with increased all-cause mortality in adults. However, the specific nature of the relationship between BPA exposure and cancer mortality remains relatively unexplored. Methods: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset was used to recruit participants. Urinary BPA was assessed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrum (LC–MS). Through the use of multivariable Cox proportional hazard regressions and constrained cubic splines, the relationships between urine BPA and death from all causes and cancer were investigated. Results: This study has a total of 8,035 participants, and 137 died from cancers after a 7.5-year follow-up. The median level of BPA was 2.0 g/mL. Urinary BPA levels were not independently associated with all-cause mortality. For cancer mortality, the second quartile's multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio was 0.51 (95% confidence interval: 0.30 to 0.86; p = 0.011) compared to the lowest quartile. The restricted cubic splines showed that the association was nonlinear (p for nonlinearity = 0.028) and the inflection point was 1.99 ng/mL. Conclusion: Urinary BPA exposure was U-shaped associated with the risk of cancer mortality, and a lower level of BPA less than 1.99 ng/mL was associated with a higher risk of cancer mortality.

Abstract:BackgroundBisphenol A (BPA) as an endocrine disrupting chemical has been shown to alter reproductive endocrine function, but little is known on its analogues such as bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) with increasing usage and exposure.ObjectiveTo explore the associations between exposures to BPA, BPF and BPS and serum reproductive hormones among reproductive-aged Chinese men.MethodsWe measured BPA, BPF and BPS concentrations in repeated urine samples and multiple reproductive hormones in the serum samples collected from 462 men attending an infertility clinic in Wuhan, China. Linear regression models were applied to assess the associations between averaged urinary BPA, BPF and BPS levels and serum hormone concentrations, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were further utilized to explore potential non-linear associations. We also examined potential modifying effects by age and body mass index (BMI).ResultsThere was little evidence of associations between BPA exposure and altered reproductive hormones. However, we found that elevated BPF and BPS exposures were in negative associations with estrogen (E2) levels and E2/T (total testosterone) ratio (all P for trends 30 years, whereas their associations with reduced SHBG levels were more pronounced among men aged ≤ 30. Also, BPS exposure in negative association with FSH only emerged among men with BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 (P for interaction = 0.03).ConclusionBPF and BPS exposures were negatively associated with male serum E2, E2/T ratio and SHBG levels, and these associations varied by age and BMI.

Abstract:Human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) is ubiquitous. Animal studies found that BPA contributes to development of prostate cancer, but human data are scarce. Our study examined the association between urinary BPA levels and Prostate cancer and assessed the effects of BPA on induction of centrosome abnormalities as an underlying mechanism promoting prostate carcinogenesis. The study, involving 60 urology patients, found higher levels of urinary BPA (creatinine-adjusted) in Prostate cancer patients (5.74 µg/g [95% CI; 2.63, 12.51]) than in non-Prostate cancer patients (1.43 µg/g [95% CI; 0.70, 2.88]) (p = 0.012). The difference was even more significant in patients <65 years old. A trend toward a negative association between urinary BPA and serum PSA was observed in Prostate cancer patients but not in non-Prostate cancer patients. In vitro studies examined centrosomal abnormalities, microtubule nucleation, and anchorage-independent growth in four Prostate cancer cell lines (LNCaP, C4-2, 22Rv1, PC-3) and two immortalized normal prostate epithelial cell lines (NPrEC and RWPE-1). Exposure to low doses (0.01-100 nM) of BPA increased the percentage of cells with centrosome amplification two- to eight-fold. Dose responses either peaked or reached the plateaus with 0.1 nM BPA exposure. This low dose also promoted microtubule nucleation and regrowth at centrosomes in RWPE-1 and enhanced anchorage-independent growth in C4-2. These findings suggest that urinary BPA level is an independent prognostic marker in Prostate cancer and that BPA exposure may lower serum PSA levels in Prostate cancer patients. Moreover, disruption of the centrosome duplication cycle by low-dose BPA may contribute to neoplastic transformation of the prostate.
Association between urinary bisphenol analogue concentrations and lung cancer in adults: A case-control study

Abstract:Elevated urinary bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations have been associated with lung cancer in humans. However, toxicological studies demonstrated that the proliferation of lung cancer cells was inhibited by BPA exposure. Therefore, it is still necessary to determine whether exposure to BPA and other bisphenol analogues (BPs) is associated with lung cancer in humans. In this study, 226 lung cancer patients and 243 controls were randomly recruited. Concentrations of three BPs in human urine were quantified and their relationships with the risk of human lung cancer were evaluated. BPA (mean 1.03 ng/mL, 0.87 μg/g Cre) was the predominant BP in human urine, followed by bisphenol S (BPS) (0.72 ng/mL, 0.53 μg/g Cre) and bisphenol F (0.32 ng/mL, 0.37 μg/g Cre). Significant correlations between creatinine-corrected urinary BPA concentrations and the lung cancer risk (odds ratio (OR) adjusted = 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17, 1.40; Ptrend = 0.04) were found using logistical regression analysis. Creatinine-corrected urinary concentrations of BPS in participants showed significant correlations with lung cancer (ORadjusted = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.59; Ptrend = 0.01) in the adjusted model. In the stratification analysis, the significant correlation between urinary creatinine-corrected concentrations of BPA and the risk of lung cancer still observed in male participants (OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.62, p = 0.040). This study demonstrates that elevated human exposure to BPA and BPS may be associated with the increased lung cancer risk.

Abstract:High prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels can indicate potential prostate problems and are a warning sign of prostate cancer. The impact of antioxidants on the PSA of generally healthy men is understudied. This study aims to evaluate 14 dietary and endogenous antioxidants associated with PSA levels for United States (US) men. We assessed 7398 men using the 2003-2010 US population-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The PSA levels were categorized into three groups: Normal, borderline, and elevated levels. We performed analyses for middle-aged and older groups aged 40-64.9 and ≥65, respectively. The weighted multinomial regressions were performed to evaluate antioxidants associated with the PSA status. For results, 0.3% and 3.4% of middle-aged and older men, respectively, had elevated PSA (>10 ng/mL). Men with a higher serum albumin level had a lower risk of an elevated PSA, adjusting for age. The magnitude of albumin's impact on PSA is larger in middle-aged men than in older men (OR of elevated PSA = 0.82 and 0.90, respectively, interaction p = 0.002). Other antioxidants are not associated with PSA. Our findings support men with low serum albumin tend to have an elevated PSA level, so related interventions can be considered to decrease PSA for maintaining prostate health.
Urine Bpa Level and the Risk of Male Sexual Dysfunction

Abstract:ISEE-0163 Background: The human population is widely exposed to Bisphenol A (BPA), a possible human endocrine disruptor. While animal studies have consistently shown its adverse effect, evidence from epidemiological studies is urgently needed. Objective: To determine whether BPA has an effect on male sexual function. Methods: We conducted a study comparing the risk of male sexual dysfunction between 173 BPA-exposed and 386 unexposed workers in four cities in China. Urine BPA was assayed to determine the BPA exposure level. Male sexual function was ascertained through in-person interview using a male sexual function inventory. Results: After adjustment for matching variables and potential confounders, BPA-exposed workers had consistently higher risk of male sexual dysfunction across all domains of measurement, compared to unexposed workers. The exposed workers had greater than three-fold increased risk of reduced sexual desire (odds ratios (OR) = 3.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.5-8.9), a nearly four-fold increased risk of erection difficulties (OR = 3.9, 95% CI: 1.6-9.7), greater than seven-fold increased risk of ejaculation difficulties (OR = 7.4, 2.5-22.0), and greater than two-fold increased risk of reduced overall satisfaction with sex life (OR = 2.4, 1.4-4.3). Among the exposed workers, a higher urine BPA level (> median BPA level) was associated with a higher risk of sexual dysfunction. The trend test for the dose-response relationship was significant for all measures of male sexual dysfunction. The observed associations were generally further strengthened when workers who were also exposed to other chemicals were excluded. Such observations support an argument for an underlying association. Conclusions: Our findings provide the first epidemiologic evidence that exposure to BPA could have an adverse effect on male sexual function in the human population.

Abstract:A synthetic organic substance called bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make polyester, epoxy resin, polyacrylate, and polycarbonate plastic. BPA exposure on a regular basis has increased the risk of developing cancer. Recent research has shown that there is a strong link between BPA exposure and a number of malignancies. We want to investigate any connections between BPA and prostate cancer in this work. The scores of bisphenols in the prostate cancer cohort were obtained using the ssGSEA algorithm. The analysis of Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment was used to investigate probable pathways that are closely related to the genes tied to BPA. The BPA-based risk model was built using regression analysis. Additionally, the molecular docking method was employed to assess BPA's capacity to attach to important genes. Finally, we were able to successfully get the BPA cohort ratings for prostate cancer patients. Additionally, the KEGG enrichment study showed that of the malignancies linked to BPA, prostate cancer is the most highly enriched. In a group of men with prostate cancer, the BPA-related prognostic prediction model exhibits good predictive value. The BPA demonstrated strong and efficient binding to the androgen receptor, according to the molecular docking studies. According to cell proliferation and invasion experiments, exposing prostate cancer cells to BPA at a dosage of 10-7 uM could greatly enhance their ability to proliferate and invade.

Abstract:Fifty‐three vigorous infants were randomly assigned to six different groups (A–F). The babies in groups A and F were not dried and were either exposed wet to room air or warmed under the radiant heater. The other groups of infants were quickly dried and exposed to room air (group B), wrapped with one sterile sheet (group C), wrapped with two towels (group D) or placed under the radiant heater (group E). The infants exposed to room air lost twice the amount of heat when compared with those insulated with two towels. The amount of heat loss by evaporation could not be demonstrated. The role of high relative humidity as an important determinant of the degree of heat loss by evaporation is stressed.

Abstract:Background: The connection between urinary bisphenol A (BPA) and hyperlipidemia is still unclear, and few studies have evaluated whether urinary BPA affects mortality among individuals with hyperlipidemia. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the link between urinary BPA and hyperlipidemia and assess the impact of urinary BPA on mortality risk in subjects with hyperlipidemia. Methods: We analyzed data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2016. Multivariable logistic analysis was performed to examine the relationship between urinary BPA and hyperlipidemia. Cox regression analysis was carried out to investigate the relationship between urinary BPA and all-cause mortality in subjects with hyperlipidemia. Results: This study included 8,983 participants, of whom 6,317 (70.3%) were diagnosed with hyperlipidemia. The results showed that urinary BPA was higher in participants with hyperlipidemia group than those without hyperlipidemia (3.87 ± 0.32 vs. 2.98 ± 0.14, P = 0.01). Urinary BPA levels were analyzed in tertiles. Compared with tertile 1 of BPA (reference), the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of hyperlipidemia related to tertile 3 of BPA was 1.28 (1.11-1.48). The hazard ratio for all-cause death associated with the highest versus lowest tertile of urinary BPA was 1.20 (95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.44; P = 0.04) among participants with hyperlipidemia. Conclusions: The study indicated a positive relationship between urinary BPA and the risk of hyperlipidemia. Urinary BPA was associated with a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality in adults with hyperlipidemia.

Abstract:Context: Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the world's highest-volume chemicals in use today. Previous studies have suggested BPA disturbs body weight regulation and promotes obesity and insulin resistance. But epidemiological data in humans were limited. Objective: Our objective was to determine whether BPA associates with obesity and insulin resistance. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study included 3390 adults aged 40 yr or older, in Songnan Community, Baoshan District, Shanghai, China. Main Outcome Measures: Questionnaire, clinical and biochemical measurements, and urinary BPA concentration were determined. Generalized overweight was defined as body mass index (BMI) of 24 to less than 28 kg/m(2) and obesity was defined as BMI of 28 kg/m(2) or higher. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference at least 90 cm for men and at least 85 cm for women. Insulin resistance was defined as the index of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance higher than 2.50. Results: The participants in the highest quartile of BPA had the highest prevalence of generalized obesity [odds ratio (OR) = 1.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.15-1.97], abdominal obesity (OR = 1.28; 95% CI = 1.03-1.60), and insulin resistance (OR = 1.37; 95% CI = 1.06-1.77). In participants with BMI under 24 kg/m(2), compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of BPA increased the prevalence of insulin resistance by 94% (OR = 1.94; 95% CI = 1.20-3.14), but this association was not observed in those with BMI of 24 kg/m(2) or higher. Conclusions: BPA was positively associated with generalized obesity, abdominal obesity, and insulin resistance in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults. (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 97: E223-E227, 2012)

Abstract:The adverse effect of bisphenol-A (BPA) on the male reproductive system observed in animal studies has not been well examined in human populations. BPA is potentially a serious public health problem because of its widely detected presence in the human body. This study was conducted among 427 male workers in regions where high levels of BPA exposure existed. All participants provided urine samples, which were tested for BPA concentration using high-performance liquid chromatography. Male sexual dysfunction was ascertained using standard male sexual function inventories. Male sexual dysfunction was measured in 4 domains using 7 indices. After controlling for potential confounders using linear regression, increasing urine BPA level was associated with worsening male sexual function on a continuous scale. All 7 indices demonstrated this negative linear correlation. Increasing urine BPA level was associated with decreased sexual desire (P < .001), more difficulty having an erection (P < .001), lower ejaculation strength (P < .001), and lower level of overall satisfaction with sex life (P < .01). A similar negative correlation was also observed among participants exposed to BPA from only environmental sources (no occupational exposure to BPA), although the estimates in this group were less stable because of a smaller sample size. Our results reveal a correlation between a biological measure of urine BPA level and declining male sexual function. This finding may enhance the understanding of the BPA effect in human populations, and may have important public health implications given the widespread human exposure to BPA.

Abstract:Background Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common health disorder of the male genitourinary system with a high prevalence, especially among middle-aged and older adults, which seriously affects men’s quality of life. Inflammatory markers derived from complete blood cell count (CBC) have previously been considered a prognostic indicator for various diseases, but little is known about their relationship with BPH. This study evaluated the relationship between complete blood cell count (CBC)-derived inflammatory biomarkers and BPH. Methods Data for this cross-sectional study were gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2001 and 2008. Using multiple logistic regressions, the study examined the association between benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) and Inflammatory biomarkers derived from blood cell counts such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) and Systemic Immunoinflammatory Index (SII). Results 3,919 participants were included, with a median age of 61.00 (52.00–71.00) years old. Among them, 609 participants had benign prostatic hyperplasia, with a prevalence of 15.54%. Upon accounting for confounding factors, the study revealed a positive correlation between the plurality of BPH PLR and SII. However, MLR, NLR, and SIRI did not significantly correlate with the prevalence of BPH (p>0.05). In contrast to the lowest quartile, higher quartiles of PLR (OR = 1.93[1.38–2.69]) and SII (OR = 1.71[1.22–2.40]) were linked to an elevated risk of BPH. Interaction tests showed that age, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and drinking had no significant effect on this positive correlation (p for interaction>0.05). In addition, we found a roughly linear association between SII, PLR, and BPH using smoothed curve fitting. Conclusions According to our research, high levels of PLR and SII are positively linked with an increased risk of BPH in middle-aged and elderly individuals in the United States. The results compensate for previous studies that still need to be validated with larger prospective cohorts.

Abstract:Although several human studies have examined bisphenol A (BPA) exposure in relation to routine sperm parameters, evidence of BPA’s effects on sperm movement characteristics is limited. We examined associations of BPA exposure with sperm parameters including sperm movement characteristics among fertile men. The cross-sectional study was conducted in Sandu County, Guizhou Province, China. Subjects provided semen samples analyzed by computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA) system and urine samples for BPA assay. They were invited to complete an in-person interview with a structured questionnaire to obtain demographics, lifestyle factors, etc. In final analyses, 500 subjects were included. We used multivariate linear regression analyses to estimate associations between BPA and sperm parameters after adjusting for potential confounders. BPA was detected in 73.6% of urine samples, with a geometric mean of 0.44 μg/gCreatinine. Compared with subjects of undetected BPA, subjects with detected BPA had increased Linearity (LIN, β: 2.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37, 4.0), Straightness (STR, β: 1.47, 95% CI: 0.19, 2.75), Wobble (WOB, β: 1.75, 95% CI: 0.26, 3.25), reduced Amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH, β: −0.26, 95% CI: −0.5, −0.02) and Mean angular displacement (MAD, β: −2.17, 95% CI: −4.22, −0.11). Subjects in the highest tertile of creatinine-adjusted BPA group had lower sperm concentration than those with undetected BPA. Dose-response relationships of BPA with LIN, WOB, ALH, MAD and sperm concentration were demonstrated by statistically significant trends across tertiles of creatinine-adjusted BPA concentrations. Similar results were obtained using unadjusted BPA concentrations. Exposure to environmental BPA would decrease sperm concentration and sperm swing characteristics (ALH and MAD), and increase sperm velocity ratios (LIN, STR and WOB), which might mediate further effects on impaired male fecundity.
