Abstract:The lightweight of ladle lining refractories is of great significance to energy saving and consumption reduction. In this work, the lightweight alumina aggregates were selected to partially replace traditional tabular alumina aggregates to prepare lightweight Al2O3-MgO-C refractories used for steel ladle linings. And, the influence of lightweight alumina aggregates on the comprehensive properties of Al2O3-MgO-C refractories was investigated in detail. The results illustrated that the introduction of lightweight alumina aggregates can improve the strength of Al2O3-MgO-C refractories, due to the optimized interface bonding between aggregates and matrix. In addition, the thermal shock resistance of Al2O3-MgO-C refractories was also enhanced after adding lightweight alumina aggregates, which should be attributed to that the addition of lightweight alumina aggregates reduced the thermal expansion coefficient of such refractories, and micron-sized pores of lightweight alumina aggregates absorbed partial thermal stresses during thermal shock test. Furthermore, the addition of lightweight alumina aggregates improved the slag corrosion resistance of Al2O3-MgO-C refractories remarkably, which can be ascribed to the formation of continuous CA6 protective layer and densified matrix.

Abstract:Graphene and graphene oxide topography have an effect on the fate of stem cells such as adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation. This overview clearly shows that a new design and manipulation of associated graphene oxide stem cell culture platforms are of paramount importance as a focus in stem cell to tissue engineering applications. This overview also proposes that a film of graphene oxide is an efficient platform to modulate structure and function of multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and in special human adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (AT-MSCs). The implication of graphene oxide on osteogenesis, neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, adipogenic and epithelial differentiation is also discussed. Graphene oxide toxicity on stem cells and the importance of GO application on ATMSCs differentiation and proliferation are final topics that are being discussed.

Abstract:Microporous aggregates are the key to the lightweight design and preparation of refractories for the working linings of the high temperature furnaces. In this work, the lightweight MgO-MgAl 2 O 4 refractory aggregates with core-shell structures were prepared by in-situ decomposition synthesis technology using Mg(OH) 2 and nano-size Al 2 O 3 as raw materials. The influence of the nano-size Al 2 O 3 content on the microstructures and properties was thoroughly studied. The results demonstrated that the microporous MgO core structures were formed after the decomposition of Mg(OH) 2 , and the MgAl 2 O 4 bonds between the microporous MgO core structures were formed through the reaction between the nano-size Al 2 O 3 and MgO. When the nano-size Al 2 O 3 contents were less than 9 wt%, the MgAl 2 O 4 bonds were discontinuous. With the increase of the nano-size Al 2 O 3 contents to 9-15 wt%, more continuous MgAl 2 O 4 bonds (i.e. MgAl 2 O 4 shell structures) were formed at the surface of the microporous MgO core structures. Overall, the optimized specimens were lightweight MgO-MgAl 2 O 4 refractory aggregates with the addition of 9 wt% nano-size Al 2 O 3 , which exhibited the microporous 2 O 4 core-shell structures, a median pore size of 268 nm, a high compressive strength of 105 MPa, and a low thermal conductivity of 4.1 W/(m·K) at 800 °C.

Abstract:This study aimed to develop lightweight refractory aggregates with high closed porosity and low thermal conductivity. We report the preparation of a series of lightweight microporous alumina-rich spinel (Mg0.4Al2.4O4) aggregates with low open porosity, high closed porosity, small intragranular pore size, and low thermal conductivity. The sintering activity of the nano-zirconia sol increased the grain boundary migration rate under the action of surface tension during sintering; therefore, the pores were closed before they were eliminated. Simultaneously, Zr4+ replaced Mg2+ and Al3+, which increased the number of cation vacancies in the crystal and accelerated the ion migration, resulting in a faster formation of Mg0.4Al2.4O4. When 0.75 wt% nano-zirconia sol was added, it increased the diffusion rate of ions and the migration rate of grain boundary, which improved the sintering reactivity. The pores were mainly small-sized intragranular pores (median size: 1.89 μm), which reduced the thermal conductivity (2.5 W•m−1K−1 at 1000 °C).

Abstract:Low-carbon MgO–C refractories are facing great challenges with severe thermal shock and slag corrosion in service. Here, a new approach, based on the incorporation of nano-sized ZrO2–Al2O3 composite powder, is proposed to enhance the thermal shock resistance and slag resistance of such refractories in this work. The results showed that addition of ZrO2–Al2O3 composite powder was helpful for improving their comprehensive performances. Particularly, the thermal shock resistance of the specimen containing 0.5 wt% composite powder was enhanced significantly which was related to the transformation toughening of zirconia and in-situ formation of more spinel phases in the matrix; also, the slag resistance of the corresponding specimen was significantly improved, which was attributed to the optimization of pore structure and formation of much thicker MgO dense layer.

Abstract:Refractory waste is a typical industrial solid waste. Owing to technical reasons, most of the refractory waste is not efficiently utilized and causes environmental pollution. In this study, we explored a novel technology for the preparation of MgAlON based composite refractories using waste MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C refractory materials. The experimental results showed that higher sintering temperatures, enhanced the mechanics of the synthesized MgAlON based composite refractories. Its flexural strength and compressive strength reached 7.7 MPa and 15.87 MPa, respectively, as the sintering temperature increased to 1823 K. Additionally, the slag erosion resistance of the MgAlON based composite refractories was studied and was found to be significantly influenced by the temperature and duration of erosion. The erosion of MgAlON based composite refractories by metallurgical slag was controlled by a combination of chemical reaction and diffusion. The apparent activation energy of slag erosion was approximately 274.6 kJ/mol. During the erosion of MgAlON based composite refractories, the metallurgical slag mainly penetrated the material through its pores. The Si, Ca, and Ti elements in the slag diffused into MgAlON based composite refractories, whereas Mg and Al, diffused into the slag from the MgAlON based composite refractories.

Abstract:In recent years, there was a huge demand for basic lightweight insulation materials in the metallurgical industry, especially magnesia-based refractories with low thermal conductivity. Therefore, the preparation of microporous magnesia-based refractory products through the synthesis of lightweight aggregate and the different grain compositions to meet the supply of light basic refractories is discussed in this paper. The microstructure, pore size distribution, phase composition, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity and sintering properties of the microporous magnesia-based refractory products sintered at 1600 degrees C were characterized. The results indicated that the original salt pseudomorph produced by the thermal decomposition of magnesite fine powder (porogenic agent) provides a uniform microporous structure for the synthesis of lightweight aggregates. The microporous morphology of the periclase phase was controlled by adjusting the content of the porogenic agent. The average pore size of microporous magnesia-based refractory ranged from 1.5 to 4.2 mu m, and the apparent porosity increased from 29.88% to 32.46%. In the same time, the thermal conductivity increased from 0.037 to 0.217 W/(m K), indicating that the introduction of homologous porogenic agents could produce lightweight alkaline refractories with high porosity and low thermal conductivity.

Abstract:In this article, a new method of making porous thermal insulation refractory reusing waste electric porcelain was successfully developed. by this method, we prepared a sample with favorable bulk density of 0.81 g/cm3 and apparent porosity of 61 %, and the room temperature flexural and compressive strengths are 11.52 Mpa and 1.84 Mpa. In the process of the development of the ceramic industry, a large amount of ceramic solid waste is generated, and how to make high‐value reuse of ceramic solid waste has also become a problem of common concern. In this article, a new method of making porous thermal insulation materials reusing waste electric porcelain was successfully developed. In this work, a porous light refractory with bulk density of 0.99 g/cm3 and apparent porosity of 59% was prepared by the novel method. Which room temperature flexural and compressive strengths are 11.52 MPa and 1.84 MPa, respectively. These properties makes the waste electric porcelain‐based porous light refractory can be applicated as lightweight heat insulation materials for high‐temperature kilns, high‐temperature catalyst carriers, high‐temperature phase‐change heat storage support materials, etc., which will create higher application value and research significance.

Abstract:Solid waste-based lightweight glass ceramics aroused a great deal of attention with the introduction of green building materials. This material demonstrated high performance while alleviating the pressure of waste accumulation. Lightweight glass ceramic was fabricated from phosphorus tailings and coal gangue as raw materials in this work. The effects of phosphorus tailing ratios (50 wt% - 100 wt%) and heat-treatment temperatures (1130 °C–1170 °C) on the pore morphology, properties and toxicity evaluation of lightweight glass ceramics were investigated. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS) tests were performed to characterize the sintering behavior of lightweight glass ceramics. The research found that Fe2O3 in the phosphorus tailings and C and FeS2 within the coal gangue achieve in-situ foaming by creating the gas at elevated temperatures. Results revealed that increasing the proportion of phosphorus tailings facilitated the generation of the molten glassy phase, which favored the formation of bubbles and the expansion of pores. The average pore size of lightweight glass ceramics enlarged from 15.33 μm to 75.02 μm upon increasing the amount of phosphorus tailings from 50 wt% to 100 wt%. Increasing the amount of the glassy phase could be achieved by adjusting the heat-treatment temperature. This not only formed a protective film preventing water penetration into the interior of the lightweight glass ceramics but also effectively protected them from corrosion by acidic and alkaline solutions. The water absorption dropped dramatically from 16.44 % to 3.63 % and the corrosion resistance was greater than 98 % when the temperature rose from 1130 °C to 1170 °C. From the toxicity evaluation, the leaching toxicity of Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in lightweight glass ceramics was 4 orders of magnitude below the limiting value and an extremely low potential ecological risk index (RI = 3.32) was obtained. The optimal preparation parameters were phosphorus tailings addition of 80 wt% and a heat-treatment temperature of 1160 °C. The corresponding porosity, bulk density, compressive strength, water absorption, acid resistance and alkali resistance were 51.29 %, 1.38 g/cm3, 10.62 MPa, 4.81 %, 98.63 % and 99.96 %. The findings of the research offered a feasible solution for the development of novel green building materials, simultaneously reducing the environmental hazards of solid wastes.

Abstract:In this study, dry sewage sludge (DSS) as the principal material was blended with coal ash (CA) to produce lightweight aggregate. The effects of different raw material compositions and sintering temperatures on the aggregate properties were then evaluated. In addition, an environmental assessment of the lightweight aggregate generated was conducted by analyzing the fixed rate of heavy metals in the aggregate, as well as their leaching behavior. The results indicated that using DSS enhanced the pyrolysis-volatilization reaction due to its high organic matter content, and decreased the bulk density and sintering temperature. However, the sintered products of un-amended DSS were porous and loose due to the formation of large pores during sintering. Adding CA improved the sintering temperature while effectively decreasing the pore size and increasing the compressive strength of the product. Furthermore, the sintering temperature and the proportion of CA were found to be the primary factors affecting the properties of the sintered products, and the addition of 18-25% of CA coupled with sintering at 1100 degrees C for 30 min produced the highest quality lightweight aggregates. In addition, heavy metals were fixed inside products generated under these conditions and the As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn concentrations of the leachate were found to be within the limits of China's regulatory requirements.
Preparation of High-strength ceramsite from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and clay based on CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system

Abstract:With the increasing production of incineration fly ash (FA), its disposal has attracted more and more attention. Based on the transformation behavior of the FA/clay system during the sintering process, the feasibility of preparing high-strength ceramics from FA/clay was evaluated from the theoretical analysis and experimental verification perspective. The theoretical analysis showed that mixing FA and clay can reduce the liquid formation temperature, promoting the sintering process. Meanwhile, according to the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram, by controlling the addition of FA of 40 wt%, the potential balanced phases of the FA/clay system can be transformed into anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), which is a typical ceramsite forming phase. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that anorthite was the dominant phase in the sintered FA/clay sample. The experimental verification results presented that under the addition of 40 wt% FA, the sintering temperature of 1200 °C, and the holding time of 20 min, the obtained ceramsite with extremely excellent strength performance and heavy metal stability can meet the quality requirements of lightweight aggregates. This study can provide a reference for the resource utilization of FA and related hazardous wastes.

Abstract:A novel method is introduced in this study for producing ceramisite coarse aggregates that are both lightweight and possess high strength. The process involves utilizing fly ash as the primary material, along with coal ash floating beads (CAFBs) that have high softening temperature and a spherical hollow structure serving as the template for forming pores. This study examined the impact of varying particle size and quantity of floating beads on the composition and characteristics of ceramisite aggregates. Results showed that the high softening temperature of floating beads provided stability to the spherical cavity structure throughout the sintering process. Furthermore, the pore structure could be effectively tailored by manipulating the size and quantity of the floating beads in the manufacturing procedure. The obtained ceramisite aggregates feature a compact outer shell and a cellular inner core with uniformly distributed pores that are isolated from each other and mostly spherical in form. They achieve a low density ranging from 723 to 855 kg/m3, a high cylinder compressive strength between 8.7 and 13.5 MPa, and minimal water absorption rates of 3.00 to 4.09%. The performance metrics of these coarse aggregates significantly exceeded the parameters specified in GB/T 17431.1-2010 standards.

Abstract:The recycling of solid waste is a win-win solution for humans and nature. For this purpose, magnesite tailings and silicon kerf waste were employed to prepare MgO–Mg2SiO4 composite ceramics by solid-state reaction synthesis in the present work. Then, effects of sintering temperature and raw material ratio on as-prepared ceramics were systematically studied. As-prepared ceramics showed improvement in their relative density (from 47.55%–68.12% to 90.96%–95.25%) and cold compressive strength (from 7.34–118.66 MPa to 303.39–546.65 MPa) with the increase in sintering temperature from 1300 to 1600 °C. In addition, it was found that Si promoted synthesis process of Mg2SiO4 phase through transient liquid phase sintering and Fe2O3 accelerated sintering process through activation sintering. Consequently, the presence of Mg2SiO4 phase effectively improved the density and strength of MgO–Mg2SiO4 composite ceramic, while reducing its thermal conductivity. This work provides a potential reutilization strategy for magnesite tailings, and as-prepared products are expected to be applied in fields of construction, metallurgy, and chemical industry.

Abstract:In order to promote the development of green building materials and solve the environmental problems caused by the accumulation of solid wastes such as phosphorus tailings and coal gangue. This work presented a novel environmental protection strategy to prepare for self-foaming high-performance ceramic lightweight bricks with phosphorus tailings and coal gangue as raw materials. The effects of sintering temperature and phosphorus tailings addition on the phase composition, microstructure and properties of ceramic lightweight bricks had been systematically investigated. Furthermore, the foaming mechanism of ceramic lightweight bricks was also revealed. The results showed that the sample with 76wt% phosphorus tailings addition has a porosity of 61.63%, bulk density of 1.04g/cm 3 , compressive strength of 10.11MPa when the treatment temperature is 1150°C. Its excellent performance was attributed to the self-foaming process at elevated temperature. During sintering, the CO and CO 2 originated from the carbon oxidation in coal gangue and the reduction of Fe 2 O 3 in phosphorus tailings acted as the foaming agent, thereby generating bubbles in the liquid phase. In addition, the leaching of heavy metals in the prepared ceramic lightweight bricks are lower than the hazardous waste leachate limit due to the solidification of the harmful metal ions in the raw material by the glassy phase. This research undoubtedly provides an environmentally friendly and low-cost method for the efficient utilization of phosphorus tailings and coal gangue. The ceramic lightweight bricks can be applied in the construction field with fine mechanical properties and low bulk density.

Abstract:Recycling aluminosilicate-based solid wastes is imperative to realize the sustainable development of constructions. By using alkali activation technology, aluminosilicate-based solid wastes, such as furnace slag, fly ash, red mud, and most of the bio-ashes, can be turned into alternative binder materials to Portland cement to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction and maintenance activities of concrete structures. In this paper, the chemistry involved in the formation of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) and the influential factors of their properties are briefly reviewed. The commonly used methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and X-ray pair distribution function technology, to characterize the microstructure of AAMs are introduced. Typical characterization results of AAMs are shown and the limitations of each method are discussed. The main challenges, such as shrinkage, creep, efflorescence, carbonation, alkali–silica reaction, and chloride ingress, to conquer for a wider application of AAMs are reviewed. It is shown that several performances of AAMs under certain circumstances seem to be less satisfactory than traditional portland cement systems. Existing strategies to improve these performances are reviewed, and recommendations for future studies are given.

Abstract:Management and utilization of solid waste are necessary for sustainable development in the metallurgical industry. This study focuses on the use of ferrotitanium slag (FTS) as a low-cost source of hibonite in the refractory lining of an aluminum-melting furnace. FTS enhances the resistance of castable samples to cryolite melt penetration but reduces their bulk density and cold mechanical strength. To explain this enhancement mechanism, we present a model in which the Al2O3 and SiO2 components in the castable samples react with the cryolite melt to form a high-viscosity barrier layer against the molten cryolite. Moreover, the well-developed calcium hexaaluminate crystals in FTS, which show excellent resistance against Na+ and F−, prevent the penetration of cryolite melt through the FTS aggregate area, and reduce the penetration speed. By promoting high-efficiency resource utilization, this study contributes to the development of a circular economy in the metallurgical industry.

Abstract:A lightweight aggregate (LWA) was manufactured from municipal sewage sludge, gangue, and coal ash. The product performance and environmental safety of the sintered material were evaluated by changing the sludge blending ratio and sintering temperature. The distribution and migratory transformation characteristics of heavy metals in LWA were examined by BCR sequential extraction in combination with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The environmental safety performance of LWA was comprehensively evaluated by the OPTI index for the first time. The leaching concentration of the heavy metals Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn in raw materials without sintering reached 1.17, 1.6, 7.84, and 7.56 mg/L, respectively, far exceeding the regulatory threshold value. At 1250 °C, sintering with 60% sludge content resulted in Cu and Zn leaching concentrations of only 0.41 mg/L and 0.37 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, a big portion of heavy metals were in the residual fraction of sintered LWA. The proportion of comprehensive pollutant toxicity index is only 199.17. Additionally, the mechanical properties of sintered LWA exceed the standards stipulated in the GB/T1743.1-2010 standard. Using sewage sludge to manufacture lightweight aggregate is not only environmentally safe but also produces LWA with good engineering characteristics.

Abstract:Proper treatment of acid-leaching tailings (ALTs) of vanadium-bearing stone coal minerals is of great urgency. One approach is adding it into the raw materials during the preparation of lightweight aggregate (LWA). But clay is always needed. In this paper, another solid waste, red mud, was mixed with ALTs as a source of flux components instead of clay. Evaluation of the physical characteristics, morphological structures, as well as crystal phases during the sintering process were investigated. When their mixtures with a proper ratio were sintered at 1080 °C, a glassy phase with certain viscosity was formed, and the gases generated simultaneously were encapsulated by the melt. Finally, LWA with a one-hour water absorption as low as 1.46%, a bulk density as low as 728.76 kg·m<sup>-3</sup> and a compressive strength as high as 10.77 MPa was fabricated.

Abstract:The utilization of solid waste building materials is conducive to the green and low-carbon development of the construction industry. In this study, fly ash, red mud and other solid waste were used to prepare high-performance solid waste unburned ceramsite, and the mix ratio design of lightweight high-strength concrete was carried out. The main conclusions are as follows: The prepared solid waste unburned ceramsite has a compressive strength of 8.9 MPa, a bulk density of 556 kg/m 3 , and a 1 h water absorption of 5.9%, which meets the relevant requirements of "Lightweight aggregates and its test methods-Part 1: Lightweight aggregates" (GB/T 17431.1–2010). Microstructure analysis demonstrated that the internal hydration products of unburned ceramsite were mainly hydrated calcium silicate and ettringite. On the basis of the detection and analysis of the content of six heavy metals in unburned ceramsite, the pollution assessment results of unburned ceramsite were consistent by means of the environmental assessment. That is, there is no environmental risk for the six heavy metals. At the same time, the Cr, As and Cd in unburned ceramsite need to be controlled, as they pose a carcinogenic risk to the human body. Therefore, the risk control of heavy metals Cr, As and Cd in unburned ceramsite was carried out. The 28 d compressive strength of lightweight high-strength concrete (cement 756 kg, silica fume 42 kg, slag powder 42 kg, floating beads 210 kg, ceramsite 165 kg, water reducer 16.8 kg, defoamer 2 kg, thickener 5 kg, water 218.4 kg) prepared by unburned ceramsite can reach 45.2 MPa, the dry apparent density is 1435 kg/m 3 , and the slump and expansion are 240 mm and 635 mm respectively, which meet the relevant requirements in the "Technical standard for application of lightweight aggregate concrete" (JGJ/T 12–2019). By calculating the carbon emission reduction of unburned ceramsite lightweight high-strength concrete, it is found that the carbon emission generated during the production and transportation of unburned ceramsite lightweight high-strength concrete is much smaller than that of ordinary lightweight high-strength concrete. The above results can provide basic theoretical support for the utilization of solid waste resources for lightweight high-strength concrete.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced alkali-activated materials (FR-AAM) present as one type of sustainable and resilient materials. However, the thermal degradation mechanism of FR-AAM remains unclear. In this study, FR-AAM incorporating air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBF), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and different types of fibers (steel, glass, and polypropylene) are produced and exposed to elevated temperatures. Test results show that ACBF (replacing 30% of river sand) improved the thermal resistance of FR-AAM due to the ameliorated interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and channels for the release of vapor pressure. Relatively, steel fibers better retain mechanical performance, whilst polypropylene fibers better provide channels for the release of vapor pressure after melting. Gel decomposition and micro crack development are the main causes for the thermal deterioration of FR-AAM. Based on non-destructive tests, damage degree is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the usability and deterioration coefficient (K) is adopted to controll the strength retention of FR-AAM at high temperatures. Economically and environmentally, the development of FR-AAM is promising in shaping a sustainable and resilient future.
