Abstract:Enhancing buffering capacity, flexibility, and energy absorption to withstand large deformations in structure remains a challenge. Bio-inspired horseshoe lattice structures, with their curved trusses, exhibit distinct mechanical characteristics compared to conventional metamaterials. However, their mechanical properties under in-plane compression have been rarely explored. This study characterised and modelled three types novel 3D-printed horseshoe lattice structures, totalling 12 configurations, with unit cell geometry varying based on cell-wall angles ranging from 120 degrees to 210 degrees. The implementation of the FE simulation based on the three network viscoplastic (TNV) model showed good agreement with the experiments. The results demonstrated that the cell-wall angle in the geometry and the cross-lap joint topology were significantly associated with the failure mechanism of the unit cell and the overall non-linear mechanical behaviour. Increasing the cell wall angles can prevent beams from failing due to bending and buckling fractures, facilitate the initiation internal contacts and stretching during in-plane compression. This reveals a configurable mechanism where the flexibility and stability of the lattice structure can trigger strain hardening, resulting in an increase load-bearing capacity. The sensitivity to strain hardening varies depending on the order of cross-laps within the topology. A colour-pattern tracking method was employed to monitor the progressive stabilisation of lattice structures, and offering a novel approach for the future design of flexible, configurable, and programmable horseshoe-based lattice structures.

Abstract:Lattice structures with excellent mechanical performance can be achieved through delicate design. In this work, inspired by the soft–hard multiphase crystals, three types of dual phase lattice structures (DPLS) composed of body-centered cubic with Z-struts (BCCZ) matrix phase and face and body-centered cubic with Z-struts (FBCCZ) reinforcement phase were designed and fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) using 316L stainless steel powder. Quasi-static compression experiment and numerical simulation were carried out to investigate their mechanical properties, energy absorption and deformation behavior. The results showed that the mechanical properties of all DPLS samples were higher than that of single phase BCCZ lattice structure. The four-body diagonal DPLS sample exhibited the highest specific strength and specific stiffness, which was 9.0% and 14.2% higher than single phase BCCZ lattice structure; while, the two-face diagonal DPLS sample had the highest specific energy absorption value of 17.45 J/g. Besides, the experimental and simulated results revealed that the arrangements and volume fraction of reinforcement phase had a significant impact on the performance, deformation behavior and internal stress distribution of the DPLS samples during compressive deformation. Abstract:Structural design enables lattice structures to have superior mechanical performance. Currently, most design ideas are derived from bionics or crystal structures, which is an inefficient design method because simplification and optimization are necessary before converting microstructures to macro lattice structures. In this paper, a new design method is proposed based on directly controlling the collapse behavior of hybrid lattice structures without imitating any existing structures. A novel dual-phase hybrid lattice structure with a coordinated deformation mode is designed and the mechanism of the coordinated deformation is revealed. A series of hybrid lattice structures composed of octet-truss and modified (MOD) re-entrant hexagonal cells are proposed to analyze various design strategies. The finite element (FE) simulations validated by experiments are carried out, aiming to contrast and analyze the collapse modes and energy-absorbing performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid lattice structure with an appropriate cell arrangement can induce coordinated deformation which generates superior energy-absorbing performance. The mechanism driving the coordinated deformation is revealed to be related to the diversity of node connectivity and the complexity of node distribution.

Abstract:Lattice structures are increasingly attracting attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and broad application prospects. However, most developed lattices feature single-step deformation or single plateau stress, which confine its multi-task applications. Herein, a novel body-centered cubic (NBCC) with two-step deformation based on body-centered cubic (BCC) and bionic fractal design is introduced. NBCC exhibits bi-plateau stress in the stress-strain curves. The underlying mechanism is caused by the bending and buckling deformation of the struts. The mechanical behaviors of NBCC are investigated by finite element simulation which verified by experiment. Compared with traditional BCC, NBCC has improved modulus of elasticity by 88%, yield strength by 21.2%, and specific energy absorption by 108% when ρ ′ and α are 0.07 and 0.5, respectively. Moreover, the elastic modulus as well as yield strength increase with geometrical ratio α . The specific energy absorption tends to maximum at the geometric ratio α = 0.6 ∼ 0.7. From the Ashby map, the proposed NBCC lattice possesses high energy absorption, exceeding most of the existing architected materials at the same density. Furthermore, the results show that NBCC has better isotropy of elastic modulus and tends to be more isotropic material compared to BCC. Finally, theoretical model of two-step plateau stress is established based on hinge dissipation principle. This work opens up new insights into the use of element replacement design to create multi-step pathways that can be applied to design engineering structures with multiple tasks and application for impact protection.

Abstract:In this study, the mechanical behaviors of a new 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure under bending are investigated. When a classical 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure is subjected to uniaxial loading, only one 2D structural component can sustain the load, which limits the capability of the auxetic structure. By changing the connection mode of 2D components, we propose a new 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure that can exhibit both in‐ and out‐of‐plane negative Poisson's ratios. To investigate the bending response of the new structure, specimens with three different design parameters are additively manufactured, and their mechanical properties are studied with the four‐point bending test and finite element analysis. Compared to the classical 3D re‐entrant lattice structure, the new 3D re‐entrant lattice structure exhibits lower initial peak stress and higher energy absorption capacity. The underlying mechanism may be closely associated with the unique deformation pattern of auxetic structures under bending. The new re‐entrant auxetic structure expands the design space of 3D auxetic structures, especially for energy absorption and protection in impact scenarios. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Lattice structures, characterized by their lightweight nature, high specific mechanical properties, and high design flexibility, have found widespread applications in fields such as aerospace and automotive engineering. However, the lightweight design of lattice structures often presents a trade-off between strength and stiffness. To tackle this issue, a bio-inspired curved-elliptical (BCE) lattice is proposed to enhance the mechanical performance and deformation stability of three-dimensional lattice structures. BCE lattice specimens with different parameters were fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) technology, followed by quasi-static compression tests. Finite element (FE) numerical simulations were also carried out for validation. The results demonstrate that the proposed BCE lattice structures exhibit stronger mechanical performance and more stable deformation modes that can be adjusted through parameter tuning. Specifically, by adjusting the design parameters, the BCE lattice structure can exhibit a bending-dominated delocalized deformation mode, avoiding catastrophic collapse during deformation. The specific energy absorption (SEA) can reach 24.6 J/g at a relative density of only 8%, with enhancements of 48.5% and 297.6% compared with the traditional energy-absorbing lattices Octet and body-center cubic (BCC), respectively. Moreover, the crushing force efficiency (CFE) of the BCE lattice structure surpasses those of Octet and BCC by 34.9% and 15.8%, respectively. Through a parametric study of the influence of the number of peaks N and the curve amplitude A on the compression performance of the BCE lattice structure, the compression deformation mechanism is further analyzed. The results indicate that the curve amplitude A and the number of peaks N have significant impacts on the deformation mode of the BCE lattice. By adjusting the parameters N and A, a structure with a combination of high energy absorption, high stiffness, and strong fracture resistance can be obtained, integrating the advantages of tensile-dominated and bending-dominated lattice structures.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of the distribution pattern of the reinforcement phase on the mechanical properties was studied for the simple-cubic matrix dual-phase lattices given the same second phase proportion. Two reinforcement phases, the body centered cubic and the face centered cubic cells, were investigated. Specifically, a novel distribution pattern of reinforcement phase inspired from Sudoku algorithm was proposed to design the dual-phase lattices with balanced elastic modulus, strength and energy absorption properties. Comparisons were made for mechanical performances of five types of distributions, i.e., the layer distribution, column distribution, Sudoku distribution, random distribution and symmetry distribution through extensive finite element simulations. The results indicate that the scattered distribution of the reinforcement phase is beneficial to the investigated mechanical properties. To guide the design of dual-phase lattices, a parameter called degree of concentration is introduced to describe the distribution of reinforcement phase. In general, the mechanical properties are inversely related to degree of concentration. The proposed Sudoku dual-phase lattice possesses zero degree of concentration along any of the three principle directions, thus exhibits advantageous isotropic mechanical properties. This paper provides a new avenue for the design of multi-phase lattice materials.

Abstract:The lightweight lattice structures with excellent mechanical properties have great potential for application in aerospace. It is very effective to maximize the energy-absorption (EA) of Dual-Phase Lattice (DPL) structures by controlling the specified shear-banding path. Thus, the controlling of shear-banding path and strengthening mechanisms in DPL with hybrid outer- and inner-Reinforcement Phase (RP) are revealed. Several typical DPLs with different RP (i.e., Octet with larger diameter and hybridization of Octet+BccZ+SC) are designed. Comparisons of DPL with Outer-RP 1 , Inner-RP 1 and their hybridization are also studied. With the efficient numerical model validated by available experiments, compressive behaviors of the proposed DPL are predicted and analyzed. The specific energy absorption of the Octet-D-1-1' and Octet-D-2-2' is 8.3% and 9.2% higher than that of the Octet-D-1 and Octet-D-2. In terms of strength value, Octet-D-2-2' is twice as high as Octet-D-2, and the strengthening effect is obvious. Compared with Octet-D-3, the relative density of Octet-D-2-2' is 0.6% lower, the SEA value is 8% higher, the strength is 34% higher, and the stiffness value is almost the same. It is indicated that the configuration and spatial position of RP have a significant effect on compressive properties of DPL, and hybridization of Outer- and Inner-RP 1 presents the highest strength and SEA. The contributions to EA of DPL are attributed to longer spatial shear-banding path, which produces a hybridization effect on EA of matrix-phase induced by RP. Inspired by dislocation theory, the dislocation detour mechanism and the formation of enhanced interface are revealed to explain the strengthening mechanisms based on shear-banding controlling. It is demonstrated that it is effective to control the shear-banding path to achieve controllable mechanical properties. The novel concept and structural design greatly contribute to controllable mechanical design of lattice.

Abstract:A burgeoning interest pervades lattice structures' lightweight yet energy-absorbent traits. Nevertheless, the solitary damage mode of conventional lattice structures impedes augmented applications. Concretely, this work centered on engineering a novel structure (a hexagonal close-packed configuration inspired by biomimicry) to transform the compressive damage mode by altering lattice arrangements. Synchronously, the effect of compression rate and relative density variations on the mechanical properties and energy absorption of the lattice structures was also probed. Additionally, modifying lattice geometries to achieve altered compression failure modes enhanced mechanical performance. Notably, strength and energy absorption increased synergistically with escalating relative density and compression rate, exceeding the capabilities of classical lattice structures fabricated from conventional structures. The present work was expected to provide researchers and engineers with new insights into the design for both mechanical properties and energy absorption.

Abstract:In this work, a new hierarchical lattice design is proposed by replacing the original straight beams of face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice with a string of higher-level circular beams from the perspective of forming more plastic hinges to improve the energy absorption capacity. The quasi-static compression behavior of our proposed lattice is thoroughly investigated by finite element simulation, theoretical modeling and experimental testing. The experimental specimens made from 316L steel are additively manufactured using the selected laser melting technique. Satisfactory agreement is achieved between the theoretically, numerically and experimentally obtained SEA. It indicates that the proposed lattices have better energy absorption than the conventional FCC lattice. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the influence of various geometric parameters and indicate that the specific energy absorption and the crushing force efficiency can be simultaneously enhanced by the proposed hierarchical design with proper number of higher-level circular beams. In addition, the auxetic effect is exhibited by the new lattice structures, in accordance with the enhanced energy absorption properties.

Abstract:Multi-cell hybrid micro-lattice materials, in which the stretching dominated octet cells were adopted as the strengthen phase while the bending dominated body centered cubic (BCC) lattice was chosen as the soft matrix, were proposed to achieve superior mechanical properties and energy absorption performance. Both stochastic and symmetric distribution of octet cells in the BCC lattice were considered. The cell assembly micromechanics finite element model (FEM) was built and validated by the experimental results. Accordingly, virtual tests were conducted to reveal the stress–strain relationship and deformation patterns of the hybrid lattice specimens. Meanwhile, the influence of reinforcement volume fraction and strut material on the energy absorption ability of the specimens was analyzed. It was concluded that the reinforced octet cells could be adopted to elevate the elastic modulus and collapse strength of the pure BCC micro-lattice material. The multi-cell design could lead to strain hardening in the plateau stress region which resulted in higher plateau stresses and energy absorption capacities. Besides, the symmetric distribution of reinforcements would cause significant stress fluctuations in the plateau region. The obtained results demonstrated that the multi-cell hybrid lattice architectures could be applied to tailor the mechanical behavior and plastic energy absorption performance of micro-lattice materials.

Abstract:The dactyls of Odontodactylus scyllarus have been proved to be an exceptionally damage-tolerant natural material that can readily smash mollusk shells, crab exoskeletons or other hard-shelled preys. In the present study, inspired by the microstructural features of the impact region in the dactyl of Odontodactylus scyllarus, a novel lightweight bi-directionally corrugated lattice was designed and manufactured by additive manufacturing technology to enhance impact energy absorption capacity. The quasi-static compressive properties and energy absorption behavior of the bi-directionally corrugated lattices were investigated experimentally. The compression responses were simulated by finite element (FE) models to duplicate the deformation process. A parametric analysis based on the validated FE model was conducted to study the effects of wave number, wave amplitude and relative density on collapse mode and energy absorption characteristic of the corrugated lattice structures. The collapse process of the bi-directional corrugated lattices can be mainly classified into three representative failure modes, including the full-folded mode, the global buckling mode and the transitional mode. It was found that the specific energy absorption of the corrugated lattice has a strong connection with the three representative collapse modes. With the same relative density, the lattices collapsed with a transitional mode have better energy absorption than those collapsed with a global buckling mode. Due to the higher energy absorption capacity and crushing force efficiency, the corrugated structures collapsed with a transitional mode are more efficient and suitable to act as an energy absorber than those collapsed with the other collapse modes.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel lattice structure for energy absorption application is proposed that is modified from the traditional face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice by introducing a cross-rod at the center of the cell. A thorough study is carried out to investigate the quasi-static crushing behavior of the proposed lattice through theoretical modeling, numerical simulation and experimental tests. The experimental specimens are fabricated via additive manufacturing technique of selective laser melting (SLM). The plateau stress and energy absorption obtained from the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches are consistent with each other. It indicates that the new lattice structures have larger plateau stress and better energy absorption performance than the traditional FCC structure. Both 2D and 3D configurations are examined and show the same tendency. A numerical parametric study is carried out to investigate the effect of the geometric parameters, which indicates that the proposed lattice structures with appropriate length coefficient have larger energy absorption capacity compared with the traditional FCC lattice. In addition, auxetic and zero-Poisson effects are also exhibited in the new lattice structures.

Abstract:A novel P-lattice was proposed to meet the engineering needs of combined high specific stiffness, specific strength and superior energy absorption characteristic. The effective elastic properties and plastic strength of the novel P-lattice were adequately investigated through numerical simulation. Results indicated that more superior mechanical properties could be obtained in the proposed novel P-lattice when compared with those of the traditional lattices. Besides, the quasi-static energy absorption of the novel P-lattice was also studied and compared with the competing topologies. A higher energy absorption characteristic was obtained in the proposed novel P-lattice for the reason that three different deformation features, i.e. compression deformation, bending deformation and torsional deformation, existed in the P-lattice under loading.

Abstract:Thin-walled lattice materials can be applied as energy absorbers in protective structures of civil defense. In this paper, quasi-static in-plane crushing tests were carried out to investigate the crushing behavior and energy absorption of buckling induced meta-lattice structures (BIMSs) with different central angles made of plastic iron material DT3 and formed by wire cutting technique. Three crushing patterns were revealed and analyzed. The test results clearly show that the initial peak force (IPF), the crushing force efficiency (CFE), the specific energy absorption (SEA) and the mean crushing force (MCF) can be substantially improved by introducing buckling pattern into the straight-walled lattice structure. The MCF of the BIMS was consistently predicted based on the simplified super folding element (SSFE) and the flattening element.

Abstract:The auxetic lattice structures usually have excellent energy absorption characteristics since their failed part can resist crushing loads continuously. However, their platform stress is relatively lower and shorter than some conventional energy-absorbing lattice structures. A novel kind of auxetic three-dimensional (3D) lattice structure is proposed to overcome their shortcoming and improve energy absorption capacity. The proposed lattice structure is named as re-entrant-TPMS hexagonal (RTH), which consists of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) and 3D truss-based re-entrant hexagonal (RH) structures. The finite element (FE) method is employed to analyze the crashworthiness and Poisson's ratio of RTH lattice structures, and the accuracy of the FE models is validated by comparing the existing experimental and theoretical results of the two sub-structures, respectively. The effect of various structural parameters on the energy absorption and negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect of the RTH lattice structure is investigated to select the structure with better mechanical performance. The mechanism studies confirm that the platform stress is higher and longer compared to the 3D RH lattice structure. The NPR effect is also essentially consistent and accompanied by a stable shrinkage deformation due to the synergistic effect among the sub-structures. The proposed RTH lattice structure has potential applications in the crashworthiness design of carrier equipment for resisting more complex impact loads.

Abstract:Photosensitive resin layered-hybrid lattice structures consisting of octet-truss cells and modified (MOD) re-entrant hexagon cells were designed and fabricated by digital light processing (DLP). Compressive experiments were conducted by electronic universal machine, drop hammer (DH) and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system to evaluate the nominal collapse strength and failure evolution of the layered-hybrid structures under different loading velocities. All the loading processes were recorded to capture the deformation modes of the layered-hybrid lattice specimens, and the strain distribution was analyzed through digital imaging correlation (DIC) method. The experimental observations reveal that the layered-hybrid lattice structure possesses a steady deformation mode within a large range of loading velocity. The results indicate that the layered-hybrid lattice structures exhibit special deformation mode, which appear to have a promising prospect for protective structure applications. A finite element model of the layered-hybrid lattice was established and numerical simulations were performed to explore the deformation details associated with impacts. The critical velocity at which the structural deformation mode changed was predicted by simulation based on the verified parameters. It reveals that the source of rate-dependent behavior is resulted from both inertia effect and intrinsic strain rate sensitivity of the matrix material by simulations and experiments.

Abstract:High load-bearing, high storage ratio, and lightweight structures hold great trends in the field of large-scale deployable space structures. In this paper, we present a smart reconfigurable lattice (SRL) structure with bi-directional corrugated core to meet the integrated and versatile designs. The three-point bending experimental results indicate that the load-bearing efficiency of the 3D SRL structure is 5 times more than that of 2D folded lattice structure. The 3D SRL structure performed mixed-mode bending behaviors, including struts buckling, debonding, and global bending. Analytical models are also established to predict the failure load of the SRL structure, agreeing well with the tested results. The feasibility of this reconfigurable design is verified by the folding/unfolding simulations and experiments. Moreover, the effects of geometrical parameters on the failure modes and the failure load are discussed. A competitive failure mode between shear-induced failure and compression-induced failure is found. The included angle plays a key role in influencing structural failure mode. These results clearly illustrate the advantage of the SRL design and provide guidelines for future designs of deployable space structures with high load-bearing, high storage ratio, and lightweight.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing has greatly relieved the design freedom of lattice structures, including the geometric topological configurations and arrangement patterns of unit cells. Herein, the effects of spatial hybrid arrangement patterns on the compression performances of multi-layer lattice structures were investigated in terms of load-bearing capacity and deformation mode. Using four types of lattice unit cells with evident discrepancies in geometric morphologies and mechanical properties, three hybrid arrangements (horizontal, vertical, and circular) composed of any two types of cells were constructed according to natural biology. Several typical lattice core sandwich panels were fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The ultimate strengths and compressive moduli were assessed by experiments and finite element analysis. The data were then compared to theoretical simulations predicted by the traditional mixture rule. The results revealed significant effects of spatial arrangement patterns and cell performance differences on the overall mechanical performances, especially in terms of ultimate strength. The traditional mixture rule was found unsuitable for the prediction of hybrid lattice core panels strengths owing to discrepancies in node constrain degree and layer deformation distribution. Layer-by-layer failure behavior was identified as the main mode for the horizontal hybrid panels, whereas shear failure behavior played a dominant mode. Under identical relative density and arrangement patterns, panels contracted with horizontal hybrids were weaker than vertical ones. In sum, these findings look promising for future design of multi-scale lattice structures.

Abstract:Recently, lattice materials have been attractive for use as cores in light-weight sandwich panels, for energy-absorption and packaging applications, or as heat transfer devices. Lattice structure is a kind of periodic trusses patterned like moleculelattice. Usually there is no filling in the space between frames of those 2D or 3D constructions, thus sufficient quantity of mass can be reduced. The mechanical properties of 2D lattice materials have been discussed at length, including the stiffness, yield, buckling, impact behavior, and etc. [1–3yyeld and fracture are major structural collapse modes for the lattice structures, a comprehensive understanding of their yielding and fracture behaviors are indispensable for engineering applications. Deshpande et al. [6] analyzed the elastic properties, plastic yielding and elastic buckling surfaces of octet truss structure. Zhang et al. [7] designed two novel statically indeterminate planar lattice structures, the SI-square and N-Kagome lattice structures (see Fig. 1), calculated their initial yield surfaces, and veri.ed their special mechanical properties. Recent work by Fleck et al. [8] predicts the fracture toughness of three 2D lattice materials, and it reveals that the Kagome has an elevated macroscopic toughness by a characteristic elastic zone near the crack tip to release the stress in quasi-static state.
