Abstract:The presence of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), an organochlorine herbicide, in the environment has raised public concern as it poses hazard to both humans and the ecosystem. Three potential strains having the capability to degrade 2,4-D were isolated from on site agricultural soil and identified as Arthrobacter sp. SVMIICT25, Sphingomonas sp. SVMIICT11 and Stenotrophomonas sp. SVMIICT13. Over 12 days of incubation, 81-90% of 100 mg/L of 2,4-D degradation was observed at 2% inoculum. A shorter lag phase with 80% of degradation efficiency was observed within 5 days when the inoculum size was increased to 10%. Six microbial consortia were prepared by combining the isolates along with in-house strains, Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. Consortia R3 (Arthrobacter sp. + Sphingomonas sp.), operated with 10% of inoculum, showed 85-90% degradation within 4 days and 98-100% in 9 days. Further, targeted exo-metabolite analysis confirmed the presence and catabolism of intermediate 2,4-dichlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol compounds.

Abstract:AbstractBenzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon produced as a result of incomplete combustion of organic substances. Over the years, the release of BaP in the atmosphere has increased rapidly, risking human lives. BaP can form bonds with DNA leading to the formation of DNA adducts thereby causing cancer. Therefore addressing the problem of its removal from the environment is quite pertinent though it calls for a very cumbersome and tedious process owing to its recalcitrant nature. To resolve such issues many efforts have been made to develop physical and chemical technologies of BaP degradation which have neither been cost-effective nor eco-friendly. Microbial degradation of BaP, on the other hand, has gained much attention due to added advantage of the high level of microbial diversity enabling great potential to degrade the substance without impairing environmental sustainability. Microorganisms produce enzymes like oxygenases, hydrolases and cytochrome P450 that enable BaP degradation. However, microbial degradation of BaP is restricted due to several factors related to its bio-availability and soil properties. Technologies like bio-augmentation and bio-stimulation have served to enhance the degradation rate of BaP. Besides, advanced technologies such as omics and nano-technology have opened new doors for a better future of microbial degradation of BaP and related compounds.

Insights on biotic and abiotic 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid degradation by anaerobic iron-cycling bacteria

Abstract:The use of the phenoxy herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) has been steadily increasing in recent years due to its selectivity against broad-leafed weeds and use on genetically modified crops resistant to 2,4-D. This increases the likelihood of 2,4-D persisting in agriculturally impacted soils, sediments, and aquatic systems. Aerobic microorganisms are capable of degrading 2,4-D enzymatically. Anaerobic degradation also occurs, though the enzymatic pathway is unclear. Iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) have been hypothesized to augment anaerobic degradation through the production of a chemically reactive Fe(II) adsorbed to Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. To test whether this iron species can catalyze abiotic degradation of 2,4-D, an enrichment culture (BLA1) containing a photosynthetic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium (FeOB) "Candidatus Chlorobium masyuteum" and the FeRB "Candidatus Pseudopelobacter ferreus", both of which lacked known 2,4-D degradation genes was investigated. BLA1 produces Fe(II)-adsorbed to Fe(III) oxyhydroxides during alternating photoautotrophic iron oxidation and dark iron reduction (amended with acetate) cycles. No 2,4-D degradation occurred during iron oxidation by FeOB Ca. C. masyuteum or during iron reduction by FeRB Ca. P. ferreus under any incubation conditions tested (i.e., +/-Fe(II), +/-cells, and +/-light), or due to the presence of Fe(II) adsorbed to Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. Our results cast doubt on the hypothesis that the mineral-bound Fe(II) species augments the anaerobic degradation of 2,4-D in anoxic soils and waters by iron-cycling bacteria, and further justify the need to identify the genetic underpinnings of anaerobic 2,4-D degradation.

Abstract:The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is commonly used for weed control. The ubiquity of 2,4-D has gained increasing environmental concerns. Biodegradation is an attractive way to clean up 2,4-D in contaminated soil. However, information on the bioaugmentation trial for remediating contaminated soil is still very limited. The impact of bioaugmentation using 2,4-D-degraders on soil microbial community remains unknown. The present study investigated the bioremediation potential of a novel degrader (strain DY4) for heavily 2,4-D-polluted soil and its bioaugmentation impact on microbial community structure. The strain DY4 was classified as a Novosphingobium species within class Alphaproteobacteria and harbored 2,4-D-degrading TfdAα gene. More than 50 and 95 % of the herbicide could be dissipated in bioaugmented soil (amended with 200 mg/kg 2,4-D) respectively in 3-4 and 5-7 days after inoculation of Novosphingobium strain DY4. A significant growth of the strain DY4 was observed in bioaugmented soil with the biodegradation of 2,4-D. Moreover, herbicide application significantly altered soil bacterial community structure but bioaumentation using the strain DY4 showed a relatively weak impact.

Abstract:Dichlorvos (O,O-dimethyl O-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)phosphate, DDVP) is a widely acknowledged broad-spectrum organophosphorus insecticide and acaracide. This pesticide has been used for more than four decades and is still in strong demand in many developing countries. Extensive application of DDVP in agriculture has caused severe hazardous impacts on living systems. The International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization considered DDVP among the list of 2B carcinogens, which means a certain extent of cancer risk. Hence, removing DDVP from the environment has attracted worldwide attention. Many studies have tested the removal of DDVP using different kinds of physicochemical methods including gas phase surface discharge plasma, physical adsorption, hydrodynamic cavitation, and nanoparticles. Compared to physicochemical methods, microbial degradation is regarded as an environmentally friendly approach to solve several environmental issues caused by pesticides. Till now, several DDVP-degrading microbes have been isolated and reported, including but not limited to Cunninghamella, Fusarium, Talaromyces, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Ochrobium, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Trichoderma. Moreover, the possible degradation pathways of DDVP and the transformation of several metabolites have been fully explored. In addition, there are a few studies on DDVP-degrading enzymes and the corresponding genes in microorganisms. However, further research relevant to molecular biology and genetics are still needed to explore the bioremediation of DDVP. This review summarizes the latest development in DDVP degradation and provides reasonable and scientific advice for pesticide removal in contaminated environments.

Abstract:The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is applied directly to aquatic and conventional farming systems to control weeds, and is among the most widely distributed pollutants in the environment. Non-target organisms are exposed to 2,4-D via several ways, which could produce toxic effects depending on the dose, frequency of exposure, and the host factors that influence susceptibility and sensitivity. An increasing number of experimental evidences have shown concerns about its presence/detection in the environment, because several investigations have pointed out its potential lethal effects on non-target organisms. In this review, we critically evaluated the environmental fate and behavior of 2,4-D along with its eco-toxicological effects on aquatic, plants and human life to provide concise assessment in the light of recently published reports. The findings demonstrate that 2,4-D is present in a low concentration in surface water of regions where its usage is high. The highest concentrations of 2,4-D were detected in soil, air and surface water surrounded by crop fields, which suggest that mitigation strategies must be implanted locally to prevent the entry of 2,4-D into the environment. A general public may have frequent exposure to 2,4-D due to its wide applications at home lawns and public parks, etc. Various in vivo and in vitro investigations suggest that several species (or their organs) at different trophic levels are extremely sensitive to the 2,4-D exposure, which may explain variation in outcomes of reported investigations. However, implications for the prenatal exposure to 2,4-D remain unknown because 2,4-D-induced toxicity thresholds in organism have only been derived from juveniles or adults. In near future, introduction of 2,4-D resistant crops will increase its use in agriculture, which may cause relatively high and potentially unsafe residue levels in the environment. The recent findings indicate the urgent need to further explore fate, accumulation and its continuous low level exposure impacts on the environment to generate reliable database which is key in drafting new regulation and policies to protect the population from further exposure.

Abstract:The herbicide butachlor has been used in huge quantities worldwide, affecting various environmental systems. Butachlor residues have been detected in soil, water, and organisms, and have been shown to be toxic to these non-target organisms. This paper briefly summarizes the toxic effects of butachlor on aquatic and terrestrial animals, including humans, and proposes the necessity of its removal from the environment. Due to long-term exposure, some animals, plants, and microorganisms have developed resistance toward butachlor, indicating that the toxicity of this herbicide can be reduced. Furthermore, we can consider removing butachlor residues from the environment by using such butachlor-resistant organisms. In particular, microbial degradation methods have attracted much attention, with about 30 kinds of butachlor-degrading microorganisms have been found, such as Fusarium solani, Novosphingobium chloroacetimidivorans, Chaetomium globosum, Pseudomonas putida, Sphingomonas chloroacetimidivorans, and Rhodococcus sp. The metabolites and degradation pathways of butachlor have been investigated. In addition, enzymes associated with butachlor degradation have been identified, including CndC1 (ferredoxin), Red1 (reductase), FdX1 (ferredoxin), FdX2 (ferredoxin), Dbo (debutoxylase), and catechol 1,2 dioxygenase. However, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and molecular mechanisms of butachlor. This review explores the biochemical pathways and molecular mechanisms of butachlor biodegradation in depth in order to provide new ideas for repairing butachlor-contaminated environments.

Abstract:Diuron (DUR) is a phenylurea herbicide widely used for the effective control of most annual and perennial weeds in farming areas. The extensive use of DUR has led to its widespread presence in soil, sediment, and aquatic environments, which poses a threat to non-target crops, animals, humans, and ecosystems. Therefore, the removal of DUR from contaminated environments has been a hot topic for researchers in recent decades. Bioremediation seldom leaves harmful intermediate metabolites and is emerging as the most effective and eco-friendly strategy for removing DUR from the environment. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, can use DUR as their sole source of carbon. Some of them have been isolated, including organisms from the bacterial genera Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Vagococcus, Burkholderia, Micrococcus, Stenotrophomonas, and Pseudomonas and fungal genera Aspergillus, Pycnoporus, Pluteus, Trametes, Neurospora, Cunninghamella, and Mortierella. A number of studies have investigated the toxicity and fate of DUR, its degradation pathways and metabolites, and DUR-degrading hydrolases and related genes. However, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and biochemical mechanisms of DUR. The common microbial degradation pathway for DUR is via transformation to 3,4-dichloroaniline, which is then metabolized through two different metabolic pathways: dehalogenation and hydroxylation, the products of which are further degraded via cooperative metabolism. Microbial degradation hydrolases, including PuhA, PuhB, LibA, HylA, Phh, Mhh, and LahB, provide new knowledge about the underlying pathways governing DUR metabolism. The present review summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding (1) the environmental occurrence and toxicity of DUR, (2) newly isolated and identified DUR-degrading microbes and their enzymes/genes, and (3) the bioremediation of DUR in soil and water environments. This review further updates the recent knowledge on bioremediation strategies with a focus on the metabolic pathways and molecular mechanisms involved in the bioremediation of DUR.

Abstract:2,4-Dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) as a common industrial waste has been massively discharged into the environment with industrial wastewater. Due to its refractory degradation, high toxicity, and bioaccumulation, 2,4-DNT pollution has become increasingly serious. Compared with the currently available physical and chemical methods, in situ bioremediation is considered as an economical and environmentally friendly approach to remove toxic compounds from contaminated environment. In this study, we relocated a complete degradation pathway of 2,4-DNT into Escherichia coli to degrade 2,4-DNT completely. Eight genes from Burkholderia sp. strain were re-synthesized by PCR-based two-step DNA synthesis method and introduced into E. coli. Degradation experiments revealed that the transformant was able to degrade 2,4-DNT completely in 12 h when the 2,4-DNT concentration reached 3 mM. The organic acids in the tricarboxylic acid cycle were detected to prove the degradation of 2,4-DNT through the artificial degradation pathway. The results proved that 2,4-DNT could be completely degraded by the engineered bacteria. In this study, the complete degradation pathway of 2,4-DNT was constructed in E. coli for the first time using synthetic biology techniques. This research provides theoretical and experimental bases for the actual treatment of 2,4-DNT, and lays a technical foundation for the bioremediation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Aryloxyphenoxy-propionate herbicides (AOPPs) are widely used to control annual and perennial grasses in broadleaf crop fields and are frequently detected as contaminants in the environment. Due to the serious environmental toxicity of AOPPs, there is considerable concern regarding their biodegradation and environmental behaviors. Microbial catabolism is considered as the most effective method for the degradation of AOPPs in the environment. This review presents an overview of the recent findings on the microbial catabolism of various AOPPs, including fluazifop- P -butyl, cyhalofop-butyl, diclofop-methyl, fenoxaprop- P -ethyl, metamifop, haloxyfop- P -methyl and quizalofop- P -ethyl. It highlights the microbial resources that are able to catabolize these AOPPs and the metabolic pathways and catabolic enzymes involved in their degradation and mineralization. Furthermore, the application of AOPPs-degrading strains to eliminate AOPPs-contaminated environments and future research hotspots in biodegradation of AOPPs by microorganisms are also discussed.

Abstract:Acetochlor is a selective pre-emergent herbicide that is widely used to control annual grass and broadleaf weeds. However, due to its stable chemical structure, only a small portion of acetochlor exerts herbicidal activity in agricultural applications, while most of the excess remains on the surfaces of plants or enters ecosystems, such as soil and water bodies, causing harm to the environment and human health. In recent years, researchers have become increasingly focused on the repair of acetochlor residues. Compared with traditional physical and chemical remediation methods, microorganisms are the most effective way to remediate chemical pesticide pollution, such as acetochlor, because of their rich species, wide distribution, and diverse metabolic pathways. To date, researchers have isolated and identified many high-efficiency acetochlor-degrading strains, such as Pseudomonas oleovorans, Klebsiella variicola, Bacillus subtilus, Rhodococcus, and Methylobacillus, among others. The microbial degradation pathways of acetochlor include dechlorination, hydroxylation, N-dealkylation, C-dealkylation, and dehydrogenation. In addition, the microbial enzymes, including hydrolase (ChlH), debutoxylase (Dbo), and monooxygenase (MeaXY), responsible for acetochlor biodegradation are also being investigated. In this paper, we review the migration law of acetochlor in the environment, its toxicity to nontarget organisms, and the main metabolic methods. Moreover, we summarize the latest progress in the research on the microbial catabolism of acetochlor, including the efficient degradation of microbial resources, biodegradation metabolic pathways, and key enzymes for acetochlor degradation. At the end of the article, we highlight the existing problems in the current research on acetochlor biodegradation, provide new ideas for the remediation of acetochlor pollution in the environment, and propose future research directions.
Efficient degradation of various emerging pollutants by wild type and evolved fungal DyP4 peroxidases

Abstract:The accumulation of emerging pollutants in the environment remains a major concern as evidenced by the increasing number of reports citing their potential risk on environment and health. Hence, removal strategies of such pollutants remain an active area of investigation. One way through which emerging pollutants can be eliminated from the environment is by enzyme-mediated bioremediation. Enzyme-based degradation can be further enhanced via advanced protein engineering approaches. In the present study a sensitive and robust bioanalytical liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LCMSMS)-based approach was used to investigate the ability of a fungal dye decolorizing peroxidase 4 (DyP4) and two of its evolved variants—that were previously shown to be H 2 O 2 tolerant—to degrade a panel of 15 different emerging pollutants. Additionally, the role of a redox mediator was examined in these enzymatic degradation reactions. Our results show that three emerging pollutants (2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), paracetamol, and furosemide) were efficiently degraded by DyP4. Addition of the redox mediator had a synergistic effect as it enabled complete degradation of three more emerging pollutants (methyl paraben, sulfamethoxazole and salicylic acid) and dramatically reduced the time needed for the complete degradation of MBT, paracetamol, and furosemide. Further investigation was carried out using pure MBT to study its degradation by DyP4. Five potential transformation products were generated during the enzymatic degradation of MBT, which were previously reported to be produced during different bioremediation approaches. The current study provides the first instance of the application of fungal DyP4 peroxidases in bioremediation of emerging pollutants.

Abstract:Diazinon is an organophosphorus pesticide widely used to control cabbage insects, cotton aphids and underground pests. The continuous application of diazinon in agricultural activities has caused both ecological risk and biological hazards in the environment. Diazinon can be degraded via physical and chemical methods such as photocatalysis, adsorption and advanced oxidation. The microbial degradation of diazinon is found to be more effective than physicochemical methods for its complete clean-up from contaminated soil and water environments. The microbial strains belonging to Ochrobactrum sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Lactobacillus brevis , Serratia marcescens , Aspergillus niger , Rhodotorula glutinis , and Rhodotorula rubra were found to be very promising for the ecofriendly removal of diazinon. The degradation pathways of diazinon and the fate of several metabolites were investigated. In addition, a variety of diazinon-degrading enzymes, such as hydrolase, acid phosphatase, laccase, cytochrome P450, and flavin monooxygenase were also discovered to play a crucial role in the biodegradation of diazinon. However, many unanswered questions still exist regarding the environmental fate and degradation mechanisms of this pesticide. The catalytic mechanisms responsible for enzymatic degradation remain unexplained, and ecotechnological techniques need to be applied to gain a comprehensive understanding of these issues. Hence, this review article provides in-depth information about the impact and toxicity of diazinon in living systems and discusses the developed ecotechnological remedial methods used for the effective biodegradation of diazinon in a contaminated environment.

Bioremediation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in immobilized micro-organism biological filter.

Abstract:Aims: To evaluate the biodegradability of 2,4-DNT using an anaerobic filter (AF) combined with a biological aerated filter (BAF), and elucidate the degradation mechanism of 2,4-DNT and analyze the bacterial community of the reactors over a long period of operation. Methods and Results: The pilot test experienced wide fluctuations influent concentrations and there was lower than 0.50 mg l-1 of 2,4-DNT in the effluent of the system. The removal efficiency was above 99%. GC-MS analysis demonstrated that 2,4-DNT was mainly reduced to 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene (2-A-4-NT), 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene (4-A-2-NT), and 2,4-diaminotoluene (2,4-DAT) during the anaerobic reaction. In addition, ethanol was added into the influent as the electron donor. Because of the use of part ethanol as an auxiliary carbon source, more than twice the theoretical requirement of ethanol was needed to achieve a high 2,4-DNT removal efficiency (> 93%). ESEM observations showed that the carrier could immobilize micro-organisms, which flourished more in reactors operating over longer periods. Further research by PCR-DGGE revealed that new 2,4-DNT-resistant bacterial had been generated during the stress of 2,4-DNT for 150 days. The dominant species for 2,4-DNT degradation were identified by a comparison with gene sequences in GenBank. Conclusions: 2,4-DNT could be effectively degraded by the combined process and ethanol played an important role in the biotransformation. The proposed transformation pathway of 2,4-DNT was concluded. During the 150-day operation, some microbial taxa unaccustomed to 2,4-DNT died out and some new 2,4-DNT-resistant microbial taxa appeared. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study provides a novel method for the bioremediation of 2,4-DNT, which is difficult to degrade by traditional biological methods. The most 2,4-DNT-resistant microbial taxa have not been reported elsewhere and they may be helpful to the treatment of actual 2,4-DNT wastewater.

Abstract:Paraquat herbicide has served over five decades to control annual and perennial weeds. Despite agricultural benefits, its toxicity to terrestrial and aquatic environments raises serious concerns. Paraquat cannot rapidly degrade in the environment and is adsorbed in clay lattices that require urgent environmental remediation. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and bioaugmentation techniques have been developed for this purpose. Among various techniques, bioremediation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach for pesticide-polluted soils. Though several paraquat-degrading microorganisms have been isolated and characterized, studies about degradation pathways, related functional enzymes and genes are indispensable. This review encircles paraquat removal from contaminated environments through adsorption, photocatalyst degradation, AOPs and microbial degradation. To provide in-depth knowledge, the potential role of paraquat degrading microorganisms in contaminated environments is described as well.

Abstract:Chlorimuron-ethyl is a selective pre- and post-emergence herbicide, which is widely used to control broad-leaved weeds in soybean fields. However, herbicide residues have also increased as a result of the pervasive use of chlorimuron-ethyl, which has become a significant environmental concern. Consequently, the removal of chlorimuron-ethyl residues from the environment has garnered significant attention in recent decades. A variety of technologies have been developed to address this issue, including adsorption, aqueous chlorination, photodegradation, Fenton, photo-Fenton, ozonation, and biodegradation. After extensive studies, the biodegradation of chlorimuron-ethyl by microorganisms has now been recognized as an efficient and environmentally friendly degradation process. As research has progressed, a number of microbial strains associated with chlorimuron-ethyl degradation have been identified, such as Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Rhodococcus sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Aspergillus sp., Hansschlegelia sp., and Enterobacter sp. In addition, the enzymes and genes responsible for chlorimuron-ethyl biodegradation are also being investigated. These degradation genes include sulE, pnbA, carE, gst, Kj-CysJ, Kj-eitD-2267, Kj-kdpD-226, Kj-dxs-398, Kj-mhpC-2096, and Kj-mhpC-2289, among others. The degradation enzymes associated with chlorimuron-ethyl biodegradation includes esterases (SulE, PnbA, and E3), carboxylesterase (CarE), Cytochrome P450, flavin monooxygenase (FMO), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Regrettably, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and molecular mechanisms of chlorimuron-ethyl. Therefore, this review covers the microbial degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl and its degradation pathways, the molecular mechanism of the microbial degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl, and the outlook on the practical application of the microbial degradation of sulfonylurea herbicides are all covered in this review's overview of previous studies into the degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl.

Abstract:Nowadays, pesticides are widely used in preventing and controlling the diseases and pests of crop, but at the same time pesticide residues have brought serious harm to human’s health and the environment. It is an important subject to study microbial degradation of pesticides in soil environment in the field of internationally environmental restoration science and technology. This paper summarized the microbial species in the environment, the study of herbicide and pesticides degrading bacteria and the mechanism and application of pesticide microbial degrading bacteria. Cypermethrin and other pyrethroid pesticides were used widely currently, while they were difficult to be degraded in the natural conditions, and an intermediate metabolite, 3-phenoxy benzoic acid would be produced in the degradation process, causing the secondary pollution of agricultural products and a series of problems. Taking it above as an example, the paper paid attention to the degradation process of microorganism under natural conditions and factors affecting the microbial degradation of pesticide. In addition, the developed trend of the research on microbial degradation of pesticide and some obvious problems that need further solution were put forward.

Abstract:Environmental contamination with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has sever effects on the ecosystem worldwide. DDT is a recalcitrant synthetic chemical with high toxicity and lipophilicity. It is also bioaccumulated in the food chain and causes genotoxic, estrogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Microbial remediation mechanism and its enzymes are very important for removing DDT from environment. DDT and its main residues dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) can biodegrade slowly in soil and water. To enhance this process, a number of strategies are proposed, such as bio-attenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation and the manipulation of environmental conditions to enhance the activity of microbial enzymes. The addition of organic matter and flooding of the soil enhance DDT degradation. Microbial candidates for DDT remediation include micro-algae, fungi and bacteria. This review provide brief information and recommendation on microbial DDT remediation and its mechanisms.

Chlorophenoxy herbicides are toxic, chemically stable, and can migrate into groundwater through soil leaching, posing a significant threat to drinking water safety and human health. Chlorophenoxy herbicides in groundwater aquifers are subject to anaerobic processes; however, the pathway and microbiology involved in the attenuation of chlorophenoxy herbicides under anaerobic condition are largely unknown. Here, the anaerobic degradation process of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), a typical chlorophenoxy herbicide, was investigated.

Abstract:The large-scale use of glyphosate has led to the continuous accumulation of residues in the environment, disrupting ecological balance and posing a threat to human health. The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential role of microbial consortium YS622 for the bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated water/soil environments. YS622 could degrade 100 % of 50 mg/L glyphosate within 36 h, an efficiency higher than that of any other consortia or pure microorganisms reported so far. The kinetic parameters of maximum specific degradation rate, half-rate constant, and inhibition coefficient were determined to be 0.2 h −1 , 139.0 mg/L, and 25.1 mg/L, respectively. YS622 metabolized glyphosate via the aminomethylphosphonic acid pathway via breaking the C–N bond. In addition, the sequencing analysis revealed that Azospirillum , Cloacibacterium , and Ochrobactrum were the dominant genera of YS622 in the degradation process, indicating that these genera might play pivotal roles in glyphosate biodegradation. Furthermore, the inoculation of YS622 in both sterilized and unsterilized water–sediment systems significantly promoted the degradation of glyphosate, with over 97 % degradation of 60 mg/L glyphosate within 36 h. The discovery of YS622 fills a gap in the synergistic metabolism of glyphosate at the community level and provides a potential candidate for bioremediation applications.
