Abstract:The approach of extended irreversible thermodynamics consists of promoting the dissipative fluxes to non-equilibrium thermodynamic variables. In a relativistic context, this naturally leads to the formulation of the theory of Israel and Stewart (1979), which is, to date, one of the most successful theories for relativistic dissipation. Although the generality of the principle makes it applicable to any dissipative fluid, a connection of the Israel-Stewart theory with microphysics has been established, through kinetic theory, only for the case of ideal quantum gases. By performing a convenient change of variables, we provide, for the case of bulk viscosity, an equivalent reformulation of the equations at the basis of extended irreversible thermodynamics. This approach maps any thermodynamic process which contributes to the bulk viscosity into a set of chemical reactions, whose reaction coordinates are abstract parameters describing the displacement from local thermodynamic equilibrium of the fluid element. We apply our new formalism to the case of the relativistic fluids, showing that the Israel-Stewart model for bulk viscosity is just the second-order expansion of a minimal model belonging to a larger class of non-perturbative theories for bulk viscosity which include the nuclear-reaction-mediated bulk viscosity of neutron star matter as a particular case. Furthermore, we show with concrete examples that our formalism provides new ways of computing the bulk viscosity directly and defines a simple prescription for constructing the Israel-Stewart model for a generic bulk-viscous fluid.

Abstract:Motivated by cosmological applications for interacting matters, an extension of the action functional for relativistic fluids is proposed to incorporate the physics of non-adiabatic processes and chemical reactions. The former are characterised by entropy growth, while the latter violate particle number conservation. The relevance of these physics is demonstrated in the contexts of self-interacting fluids, fluids interacting with scalar fields, and hyperhydrodynamical interactions with geometry. The possible cosmological applications range from early-universe phase transitions to astrophysical phenomena, and from matter creation inflationary alternatives to interacting dark sector alternatives to the $\Lambda$CDM model that aim to address its tensions. As an example of the latter, a single fluid model of a unified dark sector is presented. The simple action of the model features one field and one parameter, yet it can both reproduce the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and predict new phenomenology.

Abstract:We consider non-relativistic curved geometries and argue that the background structure should be generalized from that considered in previous works. In this approach the derivative operator is defined by a Galilean spin connection valued in the Lie algebra of the Galilean group. This includes the usual spin connection plus an additional "boost connection" which parameterizes the freedom in the derivative operator not fixed by torsion or metric compatibility. As an example we write down the most general theory of dissipative fluids consistent with the second law in curved non-relativistic geometries and find significant differences in the allowed transport coefficients from those found previously. Kubo formulas for all response coefficients are presented. Our approach also immediately generalizes to systems with independent mass and charge currents as would arise in multicomponent fluids. Along the way we also discuss how to write general locally Galilean invariant non-relativistic actions for multiple particle species at any order in derivatives. A Field Theory Framework of Incompressible Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:This study develops an effective theoretical framework that couples two vector fields: the velocity field $\mathbf{u}$ and an auxiliary vorticity field $\boldsymbol{\xi}$. Together, these fields form a larger conserved dynamical system. Within this framework, the incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equation and a complementary vorticity equation with negative viscosity are derived. By introducing the concept of light-cone vorticity $\boldsymbol{\eta}_\pm = \mathbf{w} \pm \boldsymbol{\xi}$, the paper constructs a unified framework for coupled dynamics. Furthermore, it explores the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking from $SU(2)$ gauge theory to $U(1) \times U(1)$, which leads to the emergence of the coupled vector field theory in the non-relativistic limit. This approach uncovers a connection between fluid dynamics and fundamental gauge theories, suggesting that the NS equations describe a subsystem where dissipation results from energy transfer between the velocity and auxiliary fields. The study concludes by linking the complete dynamical framework to the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen-Zumino (ANOZ) theory, a non-Abelian generalization of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, offering new insights into fluid dynamics and quantum fluid theory.

Abstract:Liu procedure is applied to a first order weakly nonlocal special relativistic fluid. It is shown, that a reasonable relativistic theory is and extended one, where the basic state space contains the momentum density. This property follows from the structure of the energy-momentum balance and the Second Law of thermodynamics. Moreover, the entropy depends on the energy density and the momentum density on a given specific way, indicating that the local rest frame energy density cannot be interpreted as the internal energy, the local rest frame momentum density should be considered, too. The corresponding constitutive relations for the stress and the energy flux are derived.

Abstract:This paper is the second in a sequence of three devoted to the formulation of a theory of self-gravitating anisotropic fluids in both Newtonian gravity and general relativity. In the first paper we set the stage, placed our work in context, and provided an overview of the results obtained in this paper and the next. In this second paper we develop the Newtonian theory, inspired by a real-life example of an anisotropic fluid, the (nematic) liquid crystal. We apply the theory to the construction of static and spherical stellar models. In the third paper we port the theory to general relativity, and exploit it to build relativistic stellar models. In addition to the usual fluid variables (mass density, velocity field), the Newtonian theory features a director vector field , whose length provides a local measure of the size of the anisotropy, and whose direction gives the local direction of anisotropy. The theory is defined in terms of a Lagrangian which implicates all the relevant forms of energy: kinetic energy (with contributions from the velocity field and the time derivative of the director vector), internal energy (with isotropic and anisotropic contributions), gravitational interaction energy, and gravitational-field energy. This Lagrangian is easy to motivate, and it provides an excellent starting point for a relativistic generalization in the third paper. The equations of motion for the fluid, and Poisson's equation for the gravitational potential, follow from a variation of the action functional, given by the time integral of the Lagrangian. Because our stellar models feature a transition from an anisotropic phase at high density to an isotropic phase at low density, a substantial part of the paper is devoted to the development of a mechanics for the interface fluid, which mediates the phase transition.

Abstract:Relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics finds widespread applications in high-energy nuclear physics and astrophysics. However, formulating a causal and stable theory of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics is far from trivial; efforts to accomplish this reach back more than 50 years. In this review, we give an overview of the field and attempt a comparative assessment of (at least most of) the theories for relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics proposed until today and used in applications.

Abstract:We derive a novel thermodynamically consistent Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard system with dynamic boundary conditions. This model describes the motion of viscous incompressible binary fluids with different densities. In contrast to previous models in the literature, our new model allows for surface diffusion, a variable contact angle between the diffuse interface and the boundary, and mass transfer between bulk and surface. In particular, this transfer of material is subject to a mass conservation law including both a bulk and a surface contribution. The derivation is carried out by means of local energy dissipation laws and the Lagrange multiplier approach. Next, in the case of fluids with matched densities, we show the existence of global weak solutions in two and three dimensions as well as the uniqueness of weak solutions in two dimensions.

A dissipative extension to ideal hydrodynamics

Abstract:We present a formulation of special relativistic, dissipative hydrodynamics (SRDHD) derived from the well-established Müller- Israel-Stewart (MIS) formalism using an expansion in deviations from ideal behaviour. By re-summing the non-ideal terms, our approach extends the Euler equations of motion for an ideal fluid through a series of additional source terms that capture the effects of bulk viscosity, shear viscosity and heat flux. For efficiency these additional terms are built from purely spatial derivatives of the primitive fluid variables. The series expansion is parametrized by the dissipation strength and timescale coefficients, and is therefore rapidly convergent near the ideal limit. We show, using numerical simulations, that our model reproduces the dissipative fluid behaviour of other formulations. As our formulation is designed to avoid the numerical stiffness issues that arise in the traditional MIS formalism for fast relaxation timescales, it is roughly an order of magnitude faster than standard methods near the ideal limit.

Field redefinitions and evolutions in relativistic Navier-Stokes

Abstract:In recent years the equations of relativistic first-order viscous hydrodynamics, that is, the relativistic version of Navier-Stokes, have been shown to be well posed and causal under appropriate field redefinitions, also known as hydrodynamic frames. We perform real-time evolutions of these equations for a conformal fluid and explore, quantitatively, the consequences of using different causal frames for different sets of initial data. By defining specific criteria, we make precise and provide evidence for the statement that the arbitrarily chosen frame does not affect the physics up to first order, as long as the system is in the effective field theory regime. Motivated by the physics of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions we also explore systems which are marginally in the effective field theory regime, finding that even under these circumstances the first order physics is robust under field redefinitions.

Universality Classes of Relativistic Fluid Dynamics: Applications

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion paper, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS$^*$ is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Finally, we construct the first linearized model for a relativistic supersolid that is proven to be causal, stable, and strongly hyperbolic.

Effective field theories of dissipative fluids with one-form symmetries

Abstract:A system with a one-form global symmetry at finite temperature can be viewed as a dissipative fluid of string-like objects. In this work, we classify and construct the most general effective field theories for hydrodynamics of such string fluids, in a probe limit where the one-form charge density is decoupled from the energy-momentum tensor. We show that at leading order in the derivative expansion, there are two distinct types of diffusive transport in a string fluid depending on the discrete spacetime symmetries present in it. One particular application of interest is magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), where the effective field theories describe the diffusion of magnetic field lines. Due to the distinction between the effective field theories for different discrete symmetries, we show that the MHD of a fluid with charge conjugation symmetry is qualitatively different from that of a neutron star, which we previously discussed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.01636" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.01636">arXiv:2207.01636</a>. The explicit effective actions that we write down can be used to obtain the dispersion relations $\omega(k)$ up to cubic order in momenta for each of the different discrete symmetry choices. As another application of this formalism, we show that when the one-form symmetry is spontaneously broken, the effective action reduces to the Maxwell theory. This confirms the interpretation of the photon as a Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of a one-form symmetry.

Hyperhydrodynamics: Relativistic Viscous Fluids Emerging from Hypermomentum

Abstract:We explore a new action formulation of hyperfluids, fluids with intrinsic hypermomentum. Brown's Lagrangian for a relativistic perfect fluid is generalised by incorporating the degrees of freedom encoded in the hypermomentum tensor, namely by including connection-matter couplings. Quite interestingly, generic hyperfluids are imperfect, since hypermomentum induces such effects as bulk and shear viscosities as well as heat fluxes. The various coefficients that appear in the first order expansion of hydrodynamics can now be deduced from a Lagrangian formulation, given a geometrical interpretation and a suggested microscopic description in terms of hypermomentum. This connection between hypermomentum and dissipative fluids could shed new light on the physics of relativistic hydrodynamics. The applicability of the new formalism is demonstrated by exact cosmological solutions.

Abstract:Explicit equations are given for describing the space-time evolution of non-ideal (viscous) relativistic fluids undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and arbitrary transverse expansion. The equations are derived from the second-order Israel-Stewart approach which ensures causal evolution. Both azimuthally symmetric (1+1)-dimensional and non-symmetric (2+1)-dimensional transverse expansion are discussed. The latter provides the formal basis for the hydrodynamic computation of elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions including dissipative effects.

Abstract:We present a new general formalism for introducing thermal fluctuations in relativistic hydrodynamics, which incorporates recent developments on the causality and stability of relativistic hydrodynamic theories. Our approach is based on the information current, which measures the net amount of information carried by perturbations around equilibrium in a relativistic many-body system. The resulting noise correlators are guaranteed to be observer-independent for thermodynamically stable models. We obtain an effective action within our formalism and discuss its properties.

Abstract:We examine quantitatively the role of dissipation in nonequilibrium thermodynamics and its connection to variational principles and the Rayleighian functional. The extremum of the Rayleighian is sometimes used to describe the inertialess (dissipation-dominated) dynamics of continuum systems, and it has been applied recently for the modeling of soft matter dynamics. We discuss how dissipation is considered within one of the modern complete descriptions of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, namely the single generator bracket formalism. Within this formalism, dissipation is introduced through the use of the dissipation bracket, describing irreversible dynamics, which is added to a Poisson bracket that describes the reversible dynamics of the system. A possible connection with the Rayleighian functional is then demonstrated that in all cases considered herein, the Rayleighian is equal to minus one half of the effective dissipation rate of the Lagrangian functional. The effective dissipation rate is obtained starting with an inertial (i.e., flux-based or velocity-based) system description, involving the Poisson bracket and the primitive part (i.e., without the entropy correction term) of the dissipative bracket. Several examples are discussed in detail, ranging from an algebraic model (damped oscillator) to continuum ones: modeling of fluid flow in porous particle media, viscous Newtonian compressible and incompressible fluid flows, and more interestingly, flow of a nematic liquid-crystalline material.

Abstract:Dissipations, e.g. heat flow and bulk and shear viscosities, cause the transport of energy, momentum and angular momentum, which is the essence of accretion of matters onto celestial objects. Dissipations are usually described by the Fourier and Navier-Stokes laws ("classic laws" of dissipations). However the classic laws result in an infinitely fast propagation of dissipations. In relativistic formulation, the classic laws of dissipations violate the causality, and hence no relativistic theory of accretion flow onto celestial object is formulated. In this short report, we summarize the causal dissipative hydrodynamics, so-called "Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics" (EIT), with a supplemental comment of which the original works of EIT are not aware, and then show two theorems about relativistic dissipative flows around a Schwarzschild black hole. By these theorems, a significant property of EIT in contrast with classic laws of dissipations is clarified, and a dissipative instability of an exact solution of relativistic perfect fluid flow is also obtained.
