Abstract:Background. Adolescence is associated with a high probability of the debut of risky behaviours. At the same time, social environment and the need for it can determine the potential for the implementation of this behavior. Family relationships play a leading role in shaping the behaviour of a teenager. Among all the factors of a dysfunctional social environment that can form emotional experiences or strengthen them, family types of parent-adolescent relationships, as well as the individual needs of adolescents in peer communication, are considered to be the leading ones Objective. The study aims to characterize the factors of protection against risky behaviours among adolescents. Sample. The study involved 865 healthy adolescents aged 15–17 years, among whom 120 adolescents were selected according to the inclusion criteria (voluntary informed consent from a teenager and legal representatives; exclusion criteria: adolescents with official diagnoses according to ICD-10 related to behavioral disorders; chronic mental and somatic diseases), 70 of them were (57.4%) boys and 50 subjects were (41.6%) girls. From the same sample, a study of “parental tolerance” was conducted in 50 parent pairs of adolescents. Methods. The empirical study was conducted with psychodiagnostic methods: (Shipitsyna, 2001) “Study of risk factors and protection”; modified technique of Bern questionnaire version “Ways to overcome critical situations” (Goncharova, 2006); “PSM-25 psychological stress scale” (Taylor, 1953, Nemchin, 1966), and “Questionnaire for determining nervous-mental stability, risk of maladjustment in stress “Prognosis” (Rybnikov, 1985); “Parental tolerance” (Ovcharova, 2018); methodology “Relationship profile test” (Bornstein, Girshfield, 2001, Makushina, 2005). Correlation analysis was applied to study the relationship between indicators of “parental tolerance”, the severity of stress, and stress resistance. Pearson and Spearman coefficients, their determination coefficients (r2) and the reliability of the correlation were calculated. Results. It is shown that for every second teenager, the factors of protection against risky behaviours included social environment (61.6%), family (65.4%), school (46.9%). At the same time, a high degree of need to overcome negative situations in adolescents was revealed in the search for support (in every fourth teenager); self-esteem increase (in 22.2% of adolescents); problem analysis (in 24.2% of adolescents). Among all the components of parental tolerance, 4 indicators of the cognitive component and 6 indicators of the emotional component had a reliable strong relationship that determines the severity of stress resistance. The etiology of interpersonal dependence of moderate severity was based on emotional reliance on others in 72.3% of students; self-doubt in 80.5% of students and the desire for autonomy in 55.5% of students. Conclusion. The materials of the study indicate the need to monitor factors of protection against risky behaviours, as well as their correction through work not only directly with the adolescents themselves, but also with their families, as well as the actualization of preventive work aimed at teaching adolescents to overcome negative emotional experiences with effective methods.
Student- and School-Level Factors Associated With Mental Health and Well-Being in Early Adolescence

Abstract:Objective: Adolescence is a key developmental window that may determine long-term mental health. As schools may influence mental health of students, this study aimed to examine the association of school-level characteristics with students' mental health over time. Method: Longitudinal data from a cluster randomized controlled trial comprising 8,376 students (55% female; aged 11-14 years at baseline) across 84 schools in the United Kingdom were analyzed. Data collection started in the academic years 2016/2017 (cohort 1) and 2017/2018 (cohort 2), with follow-up at 1, 1.5, and 2 years. Students' mental health (risk for depression [Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale], social-emotional-behavioral difficulties [Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire]) and well-being (Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale) and relationships with student- and school-level characteristics were explored using multilevel regression models. Results: Mental health difficulties and poorer well-being increased over time, particularly in girls. Differences among schools represented a small but statistically significant proportion of variation (95% CI) in students' mental health at each time point: depression, 1.7% (0.9%-2.5%) to 2.5% (1.6%-3.4%); social-emotional-behavioral difficulties, 1.9% (1.1%-2.7%) to 2.8% (2.1%-3.5%); and well-being, 1.8% (0.9%-2.7%) to 2.2% (1.4%-3.0%). Better student-rated school climate analyzed as a time-varying factor at the student and school level was associated with lower risk of depression (regression coefficient [95%CI] student level: -4.25 [-4.48, -4.01]; school level: -4.28 [-5.81, -2.75]), fewer social-emotional-behavioral difficulties (student level: -2.46 [-2.57, -2.35]; school level: -2.36 [-3.08, -1.63]), and higher well-being (student level: 3.88 [3.70, 4.05]; school-level: 4.28 [3.17, 5.38]), which was a stable relationship. Conclusion: Student-rated school climate predicted mental health in early adolescence. Policy and system interventions that focus on school climate may promote students' mental health.
School Connectedness Is an Underemphasized Parameter in Adolescent Mental Health: Results of a Community Prediction Study

Abstract:There is limited prospective research on the relation between school connectedness (i.e., the extent to which students feel accepted, valued, respected, and included in the school) and mental health symptoms in adolescents. A sample of 2,022 students (999 boys and 1,023 girls) ages 12 to 14 years were measured at 2 time points (12 months apart) on school connectedness and mental health symptoms (general functioning, depression, and anxiety symptoms). School connectedness correlated extensively with concurrent mental health symptoms at both time points (between 38% and 55% covariation with depression, 26% to 46% with general functioning, and 9% and 16% for anxiety symptoms). Using hierarchical linear modeling, school connectedness also predicted depressive symptoms 1 year later for both boys and girls, anxiety symptoms for girls, and general functioning for boys, even after controlling for prior symptoms. The reverse, however, was not true: Prior mental health symptoms did not predict school connectedness 1 year later when controlling for prior school connectedness. Results suggest a stronger than previously reported association with school connectedness and adolescent depressive symptoms in particular and a predictive link from school connectedness to future mental health problems.

Abstract:Introduction Promoting mental health during adolescence is an essential health education objective and a crucial time for the formation of healthy mindset and behaviors. During this period, individuals are more likely to engage in health risk behaviors that can contribute to mental health problems that manifest in later adulthood. It has been demonstrated that optimal psychological health and the quality and application of students' emotional and social skills may prevent and reduce the onset of risky health behaviors, such as subtance abuse. Students with specific learning difficulty (SpLD) are at higher risk to develop problem behaviors and they require special attention for promoting their mental health. Objectives The aim of the present study is to investigate mental health and well-being, and health behaviors as well as substance use in a sample of adolescents including those with SpLD, using the SDQ 'Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaire', a widely utilized instrument for the multidimensional assessment of mental health in children and adolescents. Methods Our study included 276 school-aged children (mean age: 13.57 years; SD: 1.81; boys: 54.7%), 143 of whom had SpLD. We utilized a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire that included the Adolescent Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire, the Life Satisfaction Scale, and the WHO Well-Being Questionnaire. Peer support, individual internal psychological resources, and health risk behaviors were also assessed. Results The statistical analyses revealed a number of noteworthy differences. First, the SDQ scores of smoking and drinking adolescents were substantially different from those of their peers on the dimensions of emotional symptoms, conduct problems, and hyperactivity in the case of smoking (p<.05), and on the dimensions of hyperactivity and prosocial behavior in the case of drinking (p<.05). On the other hand, significant differences were found between boys and girls, particularly in the domains of prosocial and affective symptoms (p<.05). Individuals with SpLD exhibited distinct patterns, particularly in the domains of emotional symptoms and peer relationship problems (p<.05). Furthermore, all of the investigated components of mental well-being had significant negative correlations with the SDQ dimensions of emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, and peer relationship problems, whereas the dimension of prosocial behavior showed a significant positive correlation (p<.05). Conclusions Our findings support differences in mental health domains according to the adolescents' substance using status or the presence of SpLD. The results of this study may contribute to the development of health promotion programs and intervention strategies as well as draw attention to the unique challenges faced by children with special education needs. Abstract:Background: Studies in recent years have shown a significant increase in problematic internet use. Prolonged internet usage negatively impacts various aspects of adolescents' lifestyles. Methods: The survey was conducted in three Lithuanian cities-Vilnius, Klaipėda, and Molėtai-between October and December of 2023. The survey involved students between the ages of 12 and 16. The participants completed a questionnaire that included questions about wellness and happiness, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Our study aimed to investigate problematic internet use among Lithuanian adolescents and its relationships with wellness, happiness, and mental health. Results: This study included 1412 adolescents, with a mean age of 14.41 ± 1.20, with the sample composed of 52.3% boys. Boys indicated that they felt healthier and happier than girls (69.4% vs. 47.4%; 51.4% vs. 29.6%), p < 0.001. A total of 20.8% of students had IAT scores that reflect a normal level of internet usage. For IAT, the average score of girls was statistically significantly higher than that of boys (41.87 ± 12.24 vs. 39.96 ± 12.37), p < 0.001. The IAT score was higher in the group of students who felt less happy and healthy, had more frequent headaches or abdominal pain, and had problems with sleep, p < 0.001. A statistically significant, positive weak correlation was found between students' IAT scores and SDQ internalizing and SDQ externalizing scores (r = 0.366; r = 0.385, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Prolonged internet use is arising as a serious problem among adolescents. Negative feelings, unhappiness, and poor emotion regulation have an association with internet addiction. Also, the female gender may be more associated with possible internet addiction. The results of this study can serve as initial steps toward developing preventive interventions.

Abstract:This study investigated sociodemographic and clinical factors influencing help-seeking attitudes and behavior among adolescents with mental health problems. As part of the ProHEAD ("Promoting Help-seeking using E-technology for ADolescents") consortium a school-based, online assessment of sociodemographic information, psychopathology, risk-taking and self-harming behavior, help-seeking attitudes and behavior, and barriers to help-seeking was conducted in adolescents aged ≥ 12 years recruited from randomly selected schools in five regions of Germany. Linear regression analyses with the LMG formula were performed to explore predictors of help-seeking attitudes and behavior and assess their relative importance. Nine thousand five hundred and nine participants (95.5%) completed the online assessment (mean age: 15.1 years, 58.6% female). In total, 1606 participants (16.9%) showed relevant mental health problems (e.g., depressive and eating disorder symptoms, alcohol problems, and thoughts of self-harming behavior). Among them, 895 (55.7%) reported having sought help (lifetime), with higher rates for informal (n = 842, 52.4%) compared to professional (n = 380, 23.7%) sources. High help-seeking propensity emerged as the most important factor contributing to professional help-seeking, followed by elevated levels of psychopathology and perceived barriers, with sociodemographic factors being less impactful. Psychopathological severity also outweighed sociodemographic factors in predicting negative help-seeking attitudes. These findings indicate that attitudes towards seeking professional help, perceived barriers, and psychopathology severity critically influence limited adolescent help-seeking behavior. This emphasizes the need for initiatives that promote help-seeking, reduce negative attitudes, and address structural barriers in adolescent mental health care.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which school-related factors, such as school liking, participation in decision-making, school-related parental support, teachers' support, and school physical environment, explain trends in mental health problems. The problems considered are psychosomatic symptoms (PSS), depressive symptoms (DS), suicidal ideations (SI), and suicide attempts (SA) among Swedish adolescents of varying socioeconomic status (SES) from 2004 to 2020. We analyzed data collected through repeated cross-sectional surveys from 19,873 15-year-old students at schools in a county in Sweden. Boys and girls each constituted 50% of the participants. We fitted linear and logistic regression models to investigate associations between the school-related factors and trends in mental health problems. Increased school-related parental support and school liking were cross-sectionally associated with decreased PSS, DS and SI, with school liking also associated with decreased SA. Conducive school physical environment was also found to be cross-sectionally associated with lower PSS and DS scores. Over time, mental health problems have shown a general increase among adolescents in the low SES group and a decrease among those in the high SES group. While school-related factors explained the improvement in mental health in the high SES group, we found such association only between parental support trends in PSS and DS, along with participation and trends in SA over time among adolescents in the low SES group. The results show that school-related factors play significant roles in influencing adolescent mental health. The influence, however, varied across SES gradients over time. This suggests that working against inequities in school-related factors would help address inequities in mental health.

Abstract:A theoretical study is presented of the gain and the noise spectra of laser amplifiers at pumping rates both above and below the oscillation threshold. The theory is valid for both class- A and class-B laser systems, where the decay rate of the collective atomic dipole moment greatly exceeds the decay rates of the atomic population inversion and the laser cavity. The gain and the noise properties are shown to be strongly influenced by a four-wave mixing of the signal and image frequencies via a modulation of the population inversion. Particular attention is paid to the residual noise flux that persists in the laser output above threshold and to the typical characteristics of a second-order phase transition displayed by the gain in the threshold region

Abstract:Abstract The goal of this qualitative study was to explore how adolescents with diagnosed depression describe their social relationships with peers, parents and teachers. Several previous findings have revealed the dual role of interpersonal relationships — as a stressor and contributor to different mental disorders, and also as a source of social support for mental health. Previous studies confirmed the value of a qualitative approach in exploring the self-perceived experiences of adolescents. The research group consisted of 28 adolescents, aged 13–17, with a diagnosis of depression. Individual semistructured interviews (Children's Depression Rating Scale Revised; CDRS-R) were applied in this study, which were analysed using thematic analysis. The results have both scientific and practical value, as well as relevance for the development of preventive interventions targeted at well-being and mental health of adolescents.

Abstract:Although mental health challenges are widespread, impacting 1 in 5 children and youth, only 25% of these young people receive the required mental health supports. Unmet mental health needs are strongly associated with functional impairments including poor self-care, interpersonal challenges, and school difficulties among young people. School disengagement, or a student's lack of involvement in education through interest, curiosity, motivation, and active participation, is associated with a wide array of detrimental outcomes including chronic mental health difficulties, conduct and delinquent behaviors, criminal justice involvement, and unemployment in adolescence and adulthood. Disengagement observed within the school setting may be indicative of underlying mental health challenges and reflective of service intensity need. The current study extends the literature by examining the relationship between school disengagement and mental health service intensity need among 14,750 clinically referred students across elementary and secondary school utilizing the interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health instrument. Findings indicated that more than 25% of clinically referred students were at heighted risk for school disengagement and required high-intensity services. Further, mental health service intensity need was positively associated with risk of school disengagement among students, along with the specific reason for referral (i.e., psychiatric symptoms, harm to self, harm to others, or addiction or dependency), after controlling for sex and age. Implications of the findings are explored within the context of the school setting and future directions are suggested.

Abstract:In this study, we further developed prior research on risk and protective factors in adolescents’ mental health. More specifically, we used structural equation modelling to assess whether relationships at school with teachers and peers, and life satisfaction predicted mental health in a large sample of adolescents, while also testing for age and gender invariance. The sample comprised 3,895 adolescents ( M age = 16.7, SD = 1.5, 41.3% girls), who completed self-report instruments assessing their perceived life satisfaction, student-teacher relationship, school connectedness and mental health. Overall, the results suggested that life satisfaction acted as a mediator between adolescents’ positive school relations and their mental health. Outcomes were invariant across genders, while quality of school relations and mental health declined with age. Limitations of the study and futures lines in mental health research among adolescents are briefly discussed.

Double pylorus: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Abstract:Double pylorus is a rare condition consisting of a double communication between gastric antrum and duodenal bulb; in most cases it is a complication of penetrating ulcer, sometimes it is a congenital abnormality. The prevalence of this rare anomaly ranges from 0.02% to 0.13%; the male:female ratio is about 2:1. Two cases of acquired double pylorus are reported with a review of the literature. The first case represented an occasional report; in the other one the development of double pylorus from confluent prepiloric and bulbar ulcers was documented through serial endoscopies. Both patients were affected with chronic renal failure and referred previous treatment with diclofenac; however, their relationship with double pylorus onset remains unproven.
School climate and mental health among Swedish adolescents: a multilevel longitudinal study

Abstract:Abstract Background School is one of the most formative institutions for adolescents’ development, but whether school environment affects mental health is uncertain. We investigated the association between the school’s pedagogical and social climate and individual-level mental health in adolescence. Methods We studied 3416 adolescents from 94 schools involved in KUPOL, a longitudinal study conducted in eight regions in Sweden. School climate was reported by the school’s teaching personnel and by the final year students using the teacher and the student versions of the Pedagogical and Social Climate Questionnaire, respectively. Index persons’ mental health was assessed with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. We performed multilevel logistic regression models adjusted for individual, familial and school-level confounders measured in grade 7 and exposure and outcome measured in grades 8 and 9. Results The adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals comparing the middle and the high to the lowest tertile of the total teacher school climate score were 1.47 (1.10–1.97) and 1.52 (1.11–2.09) for depressive symptoms and 1.50 (1.08–2.08) and 1.64 (1.16–2.33) for the total strengths and difficulties score. In contrast, there was no association between total student school climate score and mental health. Conclusions We found that teacher-, but not student-rated school climate was associated with an increased risk of poor mental health at the student level; the association was most pronounced for internalizing problems. Given schools’ importance for adolescents’ development, further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying the observed association.

Abstract:Mental disorders are common in adolescents, and for effective interventions we should be aware of their determinants. However, there are only a small number of studies investigating the combined effect of multiple factors. Therefore, our aim is to assess the impact of socioeconomic status, social support, and health behavior on adolescents’ mental well-being. A cross-sectional health survey of 1641 children was carried out in accordance with the study protocol of the Hungarian Health Behavior in School-aged Children survey. Multivariate multiple regression was used to analyze the main determinants of mental well-being. The boys’ mental well-being was favorable compared to girls; lower subjective family wealth was associated with lower life satisfaction and depressive mood. Life satisfaction was positively related to healthy eating, social support, and physical activity. Unhealthy eating, sedentary lifestyle, and lower social support were associated with higher depression scores. Higher social support reduces psychosomatic symptoms, while unhealthy eating and spending a lot of time in front of the computer increase them. Both social support and healthy lifestyle seem to be protective against mental health problems among adolescents, and thus interventions should focus on these factors regardless of the socioeconomic status of the participants, with special attention given to girls.

Abstract:Abstract Background During adolescence, middle school students facing psychophysical changes are vulnerable to psychological problems. The present study aimed to investigate mental health status and associated school interpersonal relationships among adolescents in China, which may help to inform effective prevention strategies to reduce the prevalence of mental health problems. Methods In the cross-sectional study, a total of 10,131 middle school students were selected from three cities in eastern China by stratified random sampling. The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), Teacher–Student Relationship Questionnaire (TSRQ) and Peer Relationship Scale (PRS) were used to evaluate psychological symptoms, the quality of relationship with teachers and the quality of relationship with peers, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the association between school interpersonal relationships and mental health problems in adolescents. Results 36% of the middle school students reported positive in mental health problems assessed by the SCL-90. The most prevalent dimensional symptom was obsessive–compulsive (43.3%). The risk of all types of psychological symptoms was significantly associated with school interpersonal relationships. Moreover, a higher risk of mental health problems was associated with poorer school interpersonal relationships. Conclusions Mental health problems were prevalent among adolescents and highly associated with school interpersonal relationships. Our findings underscore the pressing need for school administrators to make efforts to improve school interpersonal relationships among adolescents.

Abstract:Abstract Background Adolescence is associated with a rise in the incidence of mental health issues. Thus, the factors, processes, and contexts that protect and promote positive mental health in adolescence are of key interest to policymakers. Objective Our aim was twofold: First, to explore the coping strategies and sources of support that adolescents identify as protective (or not) in the face of difficulty over a three-year period; second, to examine how and why this may vary in line with the levels of adversity that they report experiencing in life. Methods Participants were attending schools in England implementing a mental health prevention programme called HeadStart. 93 semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 adolescents (age 11–12 at the outset of the study; 58% female) once per year over three years. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Six coping strategy themes (e.g., ‘Disengaging from problems’) and five support themes (e.g., ‘Parents as a source of comfort and advice’) were derived from the interviews. The types, quality, and consistency of reported coping strategies and support varied in line with whether adolescents were experiencing higher or lower levels of adversity in life over time, and according to the resources that they had available within their physical and social contexts. Conclusions Our findings underscore the importance for mental health prevention programmes of bolstering both individual-level coping strategies and the resources available within adolescents’ environments to help them to manage adversity.

Abstract:This longitudinal study examined the unique contributions of positive and negative dimensions of early adolescents' relationships and interactions with teachers and peers to self-esteem and depressive symptoms. Teacher–student relationships and interactions were measured by student reports of teacher closeness and conflict as well as observations of teacher praise and reprimands to the class. Peer acceptance and friendship quantity were used as positive dimensions of peer relationships, and peer rejection and number of mutual antipathies were used as negative dimensions. Data from 990 fourth- to sixth-grade students across 13 schools (53.35% girls, M age = 10.61 years, SD = 0.91) were collected over three waves in one school year. Teacher conflict and peer antipathies predicted depressive symptoms. Teacher closeness, teacher conflict, and friendship quantity predicted self-esteem. The findings highlight the importance of relationships and interactions with both peers and the teacher for early adolescents' mental health and the need for a multidimensional view on school social experiences. Impact Statement Findings of this study show that it is important to consider multiple dimensions of early adolescents' relationships and interactions with their teachers and classmates when studying social experiences and when aiming to improve their mental health.

Abstract:Introduction Social relationships offer the opportunity to provide support and resources to others. Feeling needed and useful to others has been understudied during adolescence, despite being shown to predict health and well‐being during adulthood. The current study examined this underappreciated way in which family and peer relationships may shape psychological well‐being during adolescence. Method A cross‐sectional sample of high school students across the United States completed an on‐line questionnaire during school hours in the fall of 2020. The sample consisted of 1301 adolescents averaging 15.94 (SD = 1.24) years in age in the ninth through twelfth grades, with 48.4% identifying as female, 47.3% as male, and 3.2% reporting either other gender identities or preferring not to answer (1%). Participants identified as Hispanic or Latino (40.2%), European American (19.8%), African American (14.7%), Multiethnic (9.2%), Asian American (7%), Other Ethnicities (7.8%), and 1.3% did not report their ethnicity. Results Feeling needed and useful was predicted by both helping and receiving support from others, strongly predicted better psychological well‐being, and mediated associations of helping and receiving support with well‐being. Males reported feeling more needed by their family as compared to females, and both reported higher levels of being useful to their family than those with other gender identifications. Conclusions Like adults, adolescents have a need to contribute and feel needed in their social worlds. Studies of close relationships should incorporate the ways in which youth provide resources and support to others in their lives as well as the sense of feeling needed and useful derived from those activities.

Abstract:Abstract Background The mental health effects of parental emigration on adolescents who stayed behind in Eastern European countries are not fully understood. This study examines the emotional and behavioural difficulties of stay-behind adolescents in Lithuania. Methods The data collection took place January 2022-April 2023 from adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who attended 25 schools from 15 regions in Lithuania. This cross-sectional study was approved by the Biomedical Research Ethics Committee, No. 2021/11-1378-861. Parents and adolescents provided informed consent to participate in the study. Self-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 2005) and a questionnaire on demographics and health status, were collected. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were calculated by using Stata (version 15.1). Results The sample consisted of 728 adolescents (response rate 52,6%), with a mean age of 14.5 years (SD 1.63), 43.4% males and 54.7% females. Of the total sample, 35,7% lived in rural areas, 84,8% had siblings and, 15.7% had at least one migrant parent. Most staying behind adolescents had migrant fathers (83.3%), and (90,6%) maintained regular online communication with their emigrated parents. Compared to peers living with parents, staying behind adolescents obtained significantly higher emotional and behavioural problems total score (12.3, SD 5.5 vs 10.7, SD 5.5, respectively), with a p-value of 0.006. In addition, adolescents with migrant parents had significantly higher scores than their peers living with parents on the emotional subscale (3.2, SD 2.5 vs 2.5, SD 2.4) and problems subscale (2.9, SD 1.7 vs 2.5, SD 1.7), with a p-value of 0.02 for both subscales. Conclusions This study found higher emotional and behavioural problems among stay-behind adolescents compared to those living with parents in their home country. The findings emphasize the need to implement supportive interventions and increase awareness of these issues in society. Key messages • Stay-behind adolescents in Lithuania experience higher emotional and behavioural problems than their peers living with parents in home country. • Greater focus should be given to the emotional health of stay-behind children and adolescents in migrant-sending countries.

Abstract:Introduction: Mental illnesses are one of the major contributors to the overall burden of disease among the young. We investigated the predictors of emotional and behavioral problems among in-school adolescents in the Indian context. Methods: Using stratified sampling, 1441 adolescents were recruited to participate in the study in Udupi taluk. The study instruments included a socio-demographic pro forma and the adolescent self-reporting version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess the emotional and behavioral problems among them. We explored the predictors of total difficulties, as well as externalizing and internalizing problems and gender differences. SPSS version 25 was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics, a Chi-square test for associations, an independent t-test to explore the gender differences, correlation analysis, and backward stepwise logistic regression for the predictors were used. Results: The mean age of the participants was 15.31 ± 0.76. An almost equal percentage of male (49.6%) and female (50.4%) participants provided data. Abnormal scores were highest under conduct problems (8.5%), and the total difficulties reached 5.1%. The male participants had higher levels of conduct, hyperactivity, peer relationship, and externalizing problems the while the female participants experienced higher levels of emotional and internalizing problems. It was observed that there was a significant positive relationship between age and emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and total SDQ score. An older age predicted an abnormal total difficulties score and externalizing and internalizing behaviors, while the type of school predicted the total difficulties and internalizing behaviors. Conclusion: The age of the adolescent, their gender, and the type of school they attended emerged as predictors of the emotional and behavioral problems among them.
