Abstract:Serotonin is a well-known secondary metabolite that plays an important role in many growth and developmental processes, as well as biotic and abiotic stress responses of plants. Yet, whether serotonin biosynthesis regulates the resistance of rice to the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens and its underling mechanisms have not been entirely investigated. In this study, we found that expression levels of four serotonin biosynthesis gene, OsTDC1, OsTDC2, OsTDC3, and OsT5H, and the serotonin content were significantly induced by BPH nymph infestation. The rice seedlings pretreated with serotonin were more attractive to BPH nymphs and promoted their feeding behavior as indicated by increased honeydew excretion. In addition, serotonin application to artificial diets increased the survival rates of BPH nymphs in a dose-dependent manner compared to the controls. Moreover, the exogenous serotonin application to rice seedlings increased the average injury scale and functional plant loss indices caused by BPH nymph infestation. Moreover, supplemented serotonin enhanced soluble sugar and free amino acid contents, as well as the activities of SOD, POD, and PPO, but repressed the production of flavonoids. Our findings illustrated that serotonin plays a negative role in the regulation of rice resistance to BPH nymphs probably by modulating contents of soluble sugars, free amino acids, and flavonoids.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Over the course of evolution, plants have developed various sophisticated defense mechanisms to resist pests and diseases. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) has an important role in the growth and development of plants and confers tolerance to selected abiotic stressors, such as drought. Previous studies have shown that ABA promotes the deposit of callose in response to piercing/sucking insect pests. The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae Fabricius, causes huge losses in rice and is especially harmful to rice seedlings. RESULTS: Exogenous ABA promoted growth and reduced the feeding behavior of S. avenae nymphs in rice. Our results suggested that enhanced trichome density and increased expression of related genes may be associated with rice resistance to aphids. An analysis of volatiles revealed the production of seven compounds associated with pest resistance. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that ABA reduces aphid feeding in rice. Our findings provide a basis for understanding ABA-mediated defense responses in rice and provide insights on more environmentally-friendly approaches to control. Abstract:Brain-inspired, artificial neural network approach offers the ability to develop attractors for each pattern if feedback connections are allowed. It also exhibits great stability and adaptability with regards to noise and pattern degradation and can perform generalization tasks. In particular, the Bidirectional Associative Memory (BAM) model has shown great promise for pattern recognition for its capacity to be trained using a supervised or unsupervised scheme. This paper describes such a BAM, one that can encode patterns of real and binary values, perform multistep pattern recognition of variable-size time series and accomplish many-to-one associations. Moreover, it will be shown that the BAM can be generalized to multiple associative memories, and that it can be used to store associations from multiple sources as well. The various behaviors are the result of only topological rearrangements, and the same learning and transmission functions are kept constant throughout the models. Therefore, a consistent architecture is used for different tasks, thereby increasing its practical appeal and modeling importance. Simulations show the BAM's various capacities, by using several types of encoding and recall situations.

Abstract:How rice defends itself against pathogen infection is well documented, but little is known about how it defends itself against herbivore attack. We measured changes in the transcriptome and chemical profile of rice when the plant is infested by the striped stem borer (SSB) Chilo suppressalis. Infestation by SSBs resulted in changes in the expression levels of 4545 rice genes; this number accounts for about 8% of the genome and is made up of 18 functional groups with broad functions. The largest group comprised genes involved in metabolism, followed by cellular transport, transcription and cellular signaling. Infestation by SSBs modulated many genes responsible for the biosynthesis of plant hormones and plant signaling. Jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA) and ethylene were the major hormones that shaped the SSB-induced defence responses of rice. Many secondary signal transduction components, such as those involved in Ca(2+) signaling and G-protein signaling, receptor and non-receptor protein kinases, and transcription factors were involved in the SSB-induced responses of rice. Photosynthesis and ATP synthesis from photophosphorylation were restricted by SSB feeding. In addition, SSB infestation induced the accumulation of defence compounds, including trypsin proteinase inhibitors (TrypPIs) and volatile organic compounds. These results demonstrate that SSB-induced defences required rice to reconfigure a wide variety of its metabolic, physiological and biochemical processes.

Abstract:Scirpophaga incertulas Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae, yellow stem borer, YSB) is a monophagous insect pest that causes significant yield loss in rice ( Oryza staiva L.). Semiochemical based pest management is being sought as an alternate to chemical pesticides to reduce pesticide footprints. We hypothesized differential release of volatiles from host rice and two companion non-host weeds, Echinochloa colona and Echinochloa crus-galli could be responsible for oviposition and biology of YSB and these chemicals could be used for YSB management. Number of eggs laid, and number of larvae hatched were significantly higher in rice plant as compared to weeds. YSB could only form dead hearts in rice plants. YSB significantly preferred host-plant volatiles compared to the non-host plants both in choice and no-choice tests in an Y-tube olfactometer. 2-Hexenal, hexanal, 2,4-hexadienal, benzaldehyde, nonanal, methyl salicylate and decanal were found in the leaf volatolomes of both the host and non-host plants in HS-SPME-GC-MS (Headspace-Solid phase micro extraction-Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometer). Pentene-3-one, 2-pentyl furan, 2,4-heptadienal, 2-octenal, 2-octenol and menthol were present only in the non-host plants. Fourteen rice unique compounds were also detected. The built-in PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and PLS-DA (Partial least squares-discriminant analysis) analysis in the MS-DIAL tool showed that the volatiles emitted from TN1 formed a cluster distinct from Echinochloa spp. and 2-octenal was identified as a unique compound. Olfactometer bioassays using synthetic compounds showed that rice unique compounds, like xylene, hexanal served as attractants whereas non-host unique compounds, like 2-pentylfuran, 2-octenal acted as repellent. The results indicate that the rice unique compounds xylene, hexanal along with other volatile compounds could be responsible for higher preference of YSB towards rice plants. Similarly, the non-host unique compounds 2-pentylfuran, 2-octenal could possibly be responsible for lower preference and defence against YSB. These compounds could be utilised for devising traps for YSB monitoring and management.

Comparison of the Volatiles from Rice Plants Infested by Rice Striped Stem Borer, Chilo Suppressalis and Rice Leaf Folder, Cnapholocrocis Medinalis

Abstract:Previous studies showed that the volatiles emitted from rice plants infested by rice striped stem borer (SSB),Chilo suppressalis (Walker) and rice leaf folder (RLF) Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) had different influences on the behavior of a larval parasitoid of SSB,Apanteles chilonis(Munakata),and adult females of SSB and RLF. However,the SSB or RLF caterpillar-induced rice volatiles remain unclear. In this paper,we collected and identified these volatiles. In total,28 chemicals were collected from the headspace of three treatments of rice plants,which included terpenoids,aliphatic hydrocarbons,ketones and,alcohols,methyl salicylate,and some as yet unidentifiedknown compounds. Both SSB or and RLF caterpillar infestation dramatically increased the release of the volatiles. Moreover,SSB caterpillar infestation induced the rice plants to release 2-heptanonol,(E)-linalool oxide and two unknown chemicals,and RLF infestation elicited the emission of 2-heptanonol,(E)-linalool oxide,methyl salicylate and β-caryophyllene. The comparison showed that compared to SSB caterpillar-infested plants,β-caryophyllene and MeSA were special specific components emitted from RLF caterpillar-infested plants. There were significant differences between SSB-infested and RLF-infested plants in amounts of linalool,α-copaene,(+)-cedrol,n-heptadecane and n-nonadecane. It may explain the reason why the volatiles emitted from rice plants infested by SSB or and RLF caterpillar had different effects on the behavior of the natural enemies and herbivores.
Olfaction Responses of Three Trichogramm Species to Sex Pheromone of Chilo Suppressalis and Cnaphalocrocis Medinalis

Abstract:Responses of three Trichogramma species,Trichogrammajaponicun,T.chilonis and T.dendrolimi,in rice ecosystem to synthetic sex pheromone of two main Lepidoptera pests,stripped stem borer Chilo suppressalis (Walker) and rice leaf folder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) were determined using the Y-tube olfactometer.The concentrations of sex pheromone were 0.01,0.1,1,10,100 and 1000 μg.The results showed that the sex pheromone lure of C.suppressalis significantly attracted T.japonicun females,but not significantly attracted T.chilonis females and T.dendrolimi females.The sex pheromone lure of C.suppressalis significantly attracted T.japonicum females,T.chilonis females and T.dendrolimi females only under certain concentration.Those results indicate that the tested Trichogramma species can use host sex pheromone as a cue to search hosts,which may promote Trichogramma species' migration from non-rice habit to rice ecosystem and improve biological control of lepidopteran pests.
Stemborer‐induced rice plant volatiles boost direct and indirect resistance in neighboring plants

Abstract:Summary Herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) are known to be perceived by neighboring plants, resulting in induction or priming of chemical defenses. There is little information on the defense responses that are triggered by these plant‐plant interactions and the phenomenon has rarely been studied in rice. Using chemical and molecular analyses in combination with insect behavioral and performance experiments we studied how volatiles emitted by rice plants infested by the striped stem borer (SSB) Chilo suppressalis affect defenses against this pest in conspecific plants. Compared to rice plants exposed to the volatiles from uninfested plants, plants exposed to SSB‐induced volatiles showed enhanced direct and indirect resistance to SSB. When subjected to caterpillar damage, the HIPV‐exposed plants showed increased expression of jasmonic acid (JA) signaling genes, resulting in JA accumulation and higher levels of defensive proteinase inhibitors. Moreover, plants exposed to SSB‐induced volatiles emitted larger amounts of inducible volatiles and were more attractive to the parasitoid Cotesia chilonis. By unraveling the factors involved in HIPV‐mediated defense priming in rice we reveal a key defensive role for proteinase inhibitors. These findings pave the way for novel rice management strategies to enhance the plant's resistance to one of its most devastating pests.

Metabolomic Profiling Reveals the Anti-Herbivore Mechanisms of Rice (Oryza sativa)

Abstract:The use of secondary metabolites of rice to control pests has become a research hotspot, but little is known about the mechanism of rice self-resistance. In this study, metabolomics analysis was performed on two groups of rice (T1, with insect pests; T2, without pests), indicating that fatty acids, alkaloids, and phenolic acids were significantly up-regulated in T1. The up-regulated metabolites (p-value < 0.1) were enriched in linoleic acid metabolism, terpene, piperidine, and pyridine alkaloid biosynthesis, α-linolenic acid metabolism, and tryptophan metabolism. Six significantly up-regulated differential metabolites in T1 were screened out: N-trans-feruloyl-3-methoxytyramine (1), N-trans-feruloyltyramine (2), N-trans-p-coumaroyltyramine (3), N-cis-feruloyltyramine (4), N-phenylacetyl-L-glutamine (5), and benzamide (6). The insect growth inhibitory activities of these six different metabolites were determined, and the results show that compound 1 had the highest activity, which significantly inhibited the growth of Chilo suppressalis by 59.63%. Compounds 2–4 also showed a good inhibitory effect on the growth of Chilo suppressalis, while the other compounds had no significant effect. RNA-seq analyses showed that larval exposure to compound 1 up-regulated the genes that were significantly enriched in ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes, the cell cycle, ribosomes, and other pathways. The down-regulated genes were significantly enriched in metabolic pathways, oxidative phosphorylation, the citrate cycle (TCA cycle), and other pathways. Eighteen up-regulated genes and fifteen down-regulated genes from the above significantly enriched pathways were screened out and verified by real-time quantitative PCR. The activities of detoxification enzymes (glutathione S-transferase (GST); UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT); and carboxylesterase (CarE)) under larval exposure to compound 1 were measured, which indicated that the activity of GST was significantly inhibited by compound 1, while the activities of the UGT and CarE enzymes did not significantly change. As determined by UPLC-MS, the contents of compound 1 in the T1 and T2 groups were 8.55 ng/g and 0.53 ng/g, respectively, which indicated that pest insects significantly induced the synthesis of compound 1. Compound 1 may enhance rice insect resistance by inhibiting the detoxification enzyme activity and metabolism of Chilo suppressalis, as well as promoting cell proliferation to affect its normal growth and development process. The chemical–ecological mechanism of the insect resistance of rice is preliminarily clarified in this paper.

Abstract:The orientation behavior of the 1st and the 3rd instar larvae of the striped stem borer （SSB）, Chilo suppessalis, to the volatiles emitted from rice plants was studied with a Y-tube olfactometer. The treatments included healthy plants vs clean air （HP vs CA）, striped stem borer damaged plants vs clean air （SSB-DP vs CA）, rice leaf folder damaged plants vs clean air （RLF-DP vs CA）, HP vs SSB-DP, HP vs RLF-DP and SSB-DP vs RLF-DP. Volatiles from all rice plants had significant attraction for both of the 1st and the 3rd instar larvae. The orientation selection of larvae to the volatiles from rice plants treated differentially （HP, SSB-DP, and RLF-DP） did not impose any significant influence.
Defence and nutrition synergistically contribute to the distinct tolerance of rice subspecies to the stem borer, Chilo suppressalis

Abstract:Damage caused by the rice striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is much more severe on indica/xian rice than on japonica/geng rice (Oryza sativa) which matches pest outbreak data in cropping regions of China. The mechanistic basis of this difference among rice subspecies remains unclear. Using transcriptomic, metabolomic and genetic analyses in combination with insect bioassay experiments, we showed that japonica and indica rice utilise different defence responses to repel SSB, and that SSB exploited plant nutrition deficiencies in different ways in the subspecies. The more resistant japonica rice induced patterns of accumulation of methyl jasmonate (MeJA—part of a defensive pathway) and vitamin B1 (VB1—a nutrition pathway) distinct from indica cultivars. Using gene‐edited rice plants and SSB bioassays, we found that MeJA and VB1 jointly affected the performance of SSB by disrupting juvenile hormone levels. In addition, genetic variants of key biosynthesis genes in the MeJA and VB1 pathways (OsJMT and OsTH1, respectively) differed between japonica and indica rice and contributed to performance differences; in indica rice, SSB avoided the MeJA defence pathway and hijacked the VB1 nutrition‐related pathway to promote development. The findings highlight important genetic and mechanistic differences between rice subspecies affecting SSB damage which could be exploited in plant breeding for resistance.

Characterizing potential repelling volatiles for "push-pull" strategy against stem borer: a case study in Chilo auricilius

Abstract:Background: Massive techniques have been evaluated for developing different pest control methods to minimize fertilizer and pesticide inputs. As "push-pull" strategy utilizes generally non-toxic chemicals to manipulate behaviors of insects, such strategy is considered to be environmentally friendly. "Push-pull" strategy has been extraordinarily effective in controlling stem borers, and the identification of new "pushing" or "pull" components against stem borers could be significantly helpful. Results: In this study, the results of field trapping assay and behavioral assay showed the larvae of C.auricilius, one kind of stem borers, could be deterred by rice plant under tilling stage, its main host crop. The profiles of volatiles were compared between rice plants under two different developmental stages, and α-pinene was identified as a key differential component. The repelling activity of α-pinene against C.auricilius was confirmed by Y-tube olfactometer. For illuminating the olfactory recognition mechanism, transcriptome analysis was carried out, and 13 chemosensory proteins (CSPs) were identified in larvae and 19 CSPs were identified in adult of C.auriciliu, which was reported for the first time in this insect. Among these identified CSPs, 4 CSPs were significantly regulated by α-pinene treatment, and CSP8 showed good binding affinity with α-pinene in vitro. Conclusions: Overall, C.auricilius could be repelled by rice plant at tilling stage, and our results highlighted α-pinene as a key component in inducing repelling activity at this specific stage and confirmed the roles of some candidate chemosensory elements in this chemo-sensing process. The results in this study could provide valuable information for chemosensory mechanism of C.auricilius and for identification of "push" agent against rice stem borers.
Rice Defense Responses Orchestrated by Oral Bacteria of the Rice Striped Stem Borer, Chilo Suppressalis.

Abstract:Plant defenses in response to chewing insects are generally regulated by jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway, whereas salicylic acid (SA) signaling is mainly involved in plant defense against biotrophic pathogens and piercing-sucking insects. Previous studies showed that both JA- and SA-related defenses in rice plants were triggered by the infestation of the rice striped stem borer (SSB, Chilo suppressalis), a destructive pest causing severe damage to rice production. Herbivore-associated microbes play an important role in modulating plant-insect interaction, and thus we speculate that the SSB symbiotic microbes acting as a hidden player may cause this anomalous result. The antibiotics (AB) treatment significantly depressed the performance of field-collected SSB larvae on rice plants, and reduced the quantities of bacteria around the wounds of rice stems compared to non-AB treatment. In response to mechanical wounding and oral secretions (OS) collected from non-AB treated larvae, rice plants exhibited lower levels of JA-regulated defenses, but higher levels of SA-regulated defenses compared to the treatment of OS from AB-treated larvae determined by using a combination of biochemical and molecular methods. Among seven culturable bacteria isolated from the OS of SSB larvae, Enterobacter and Acinetobacter contributed to the suppression of JA signaling-related defenses in rice plants, and axenic larvae reinoculated with these two strains displayed better performance on rice plants. Our findings demonstrate that SSB larvae exploit oral secreted bacteria to interfere with plant anti-herbivore defense and avoid fully activating the JA-regulated antiherbivore defenses of rice plants.

Abstract:Chilo suppressalis is a notorious pest that attacks rice, feeding throughout the entire growth period of rice and posing a serious threat to rice production worldwide. Due to the boring behavior and overlapping generations of C. suppressalis, the pest is difficult to control. Moreover, no rice variety with high resistance to the striped stem borer (SSB) has been found in the available rice germplasm, which also poses a challenge to controlling the SSB. At present, chemical control is widely used in agricultural production to manage the problem, but its effect is limited and it also pollutes the environment. Therefore, developing genetic resistance is the only way to avoid the use of chemical insecticides. This article primarily focuses on the research status of the induced defense of rice against the SSB from the perspective of immunity, in which plant hormones (such as jasmonic acid and ethylene) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) play an important role in the immune response of rice to the SSB. The article also reviews progress in using transgenic technology to study the relationship between rice and the SSB as well as exploring the resistance genes. Lastly, the article discusses prospects for future research on rice's resistance to the SSB.
Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Between Resistant and Susceptible Rice Cultivars Responding to Striped Stem Borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis (Walker) Infestation

Abstract:The striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), is a notorious pest of rice that causes large losses in China. Breeding and screening of resistance rice cultivars are effective strategies for C. suppressalis management. In this study, insect-resistant traits of 47 rice cultivars were investigated by C. suppressalis artificial infestation (AI) both in field and greenhouse experiments, using the susceptible (S) cultivar 1665 as a control. Results suggest that two rice cultivars, namely 1688 and 1654, are resistant (R) and moderately resistant (MR) to C. suppressalis, respectively. Then, a comparative transcriptome (RNA-Seq) was de novo assembled and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with altered expression levels were investigated among cultivars 1688, 1654, and 1665, with or without C. suppressalis infestation for 24 h. A total of 2569 and 1861 genes were up-regulated, and 3852 and 1861 genes were down-regulated in cultivars 1688 and 1654, respectively after artificial infestation with C. suppressalis compared to the non-infested control (CK). For the susceptible cultivar 1665, a total of 882 genes were up-regulated and 3863 genes were down-regulated after artificial infestation with C. suppressalis compared to the CK. Twenty four DEGs belong to proteinase inhibitor, lectin and chitinase gene families; plant hormone signal transduction and plant-pathogen interaction pathways were selected as candidate genes to test their possible role in C. suppressalis resistance. RT-qPCR results revealed that 13 genes were significantly up-regulated and 8 were significantly down-regulated in the resistant cultivar 1688 with C. suppressalis artificial infestation (1688AI) compared to the CK. Three genes, LTPL164, LTPL151, and LOC Os11g32100, showed more than a 10-fold higher expression in 1688AI than in 1688CK, suggesting their potential role in insect resistance. Overall, our results provide an important foundation for further understanding the insect resistance mechanisms of selected resistant varieties that will help us to breed C. suppressalis resistant rice varieties.
Disruption of serotonin biosynthesis increases resistance to striped stem borer without changing innate defense response in rice

Abstract:Striped stem borer (SSB) is one of the most damaging pests in rice production worldwide. Previously, we preliminarily demonstrated that indica rice Jiazhe LM, an OsT5H (encoding tryptamine‐5‐hydroxylase) knockout mutant deficient in serotonin, had increased resistance to SSB as compared with its wildtype parent Jiazhe B. However, the full scenario of SSB resistance and the underlying mechanism remain unknown. In this study, we first demonstrated that the OsT5H knockout could generally increase rice resistance to SSB and then proved that the OsT5H knockout does not disrupt the innate defense response of rice plants to SSB infestation, that is, OsT5H knockout mutations neither had significant effect on the transcriptional response of defense genes upon SSB infestation, nor the profile of defense related metabolites and plant hormones, such as lignin, SA, JA and ABA, nor the activity of ROS scavenging enzymes and the ROS contents. We then demonstrated that supplementation of serotonin promoted SSB growth and performance in artificial diet feeding experiments. We observed that SSB larvae feeding on Jiazhe B had serotonin 1.72‐ to 2.30‐fold that of those feeding on Jiazhe LM at the whole body level, and more than 3.31 and 1.84 times in the hemolymph and head, respectively. Further studies showed that the expression of genes involved in serotonin biosynthesis and transport was ~ 88.1 % greater in SSB larvae feeding on Jiahze LM than those feeding on Jiazhe B. These observations indicated that SSB increases serotonin synthesis when feeding on serotonin deficient rice but is unable to fully compensate the dietary serotonin deficiency. Put together, the present study strongly suggests that it is the deficiency of serotonin, not the secondary effect of OsT5H knockout on innate defense response confers the SSB resistance in rice, which implies that reducing serotonin level, particularly through inhibition of its inductive synthesis upon SSB damage, could be an efficient strategy for breeding SSB resistant varieties.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae) is an important predatory natural enemy of planthopper and leafhopper eggs in Asian rice paddy fields. Cyrtorhinus lividipennis is known to rely largely on herbivoreinduced plant volatiles to identify eggs embedded in rice stem tissues for feeding and on pheromones for mating. However, exactly how C. lividipennis decode these chemical information is unclear. In most insects, the odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and the chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are essential for seeking out food resources and mates. In this study, we identified 10 OBP and 5 CSP genes in C. lividipennis and investigated their expression patterns in various tissues of adult males and females by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Six OBP genes (ClivOBP1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 10) were mainly expressed in the male antennae, whereas three genes (ClivOBP3, ClivOBP7, and ClivOBP8) had high expression in the female antennae. ClivCSP1 was predominantly expressed in the male antennae. These findings suggest that most ClivOBPs and ClivCSPs are likely involved in food-searching behavior. The recognition of the pheromone molecules provides the basis for further functional studies on the chemoreception system of C. lividipennis.
Caterpillar-Induced Rice Volatile (E)-β-Farnesene Impairs the Development and Survival of Chilo suppressalis Larvae by Disrupting Insect Hormone Balance

Abstract:Significant research progress has recently been made on establishing the roles of tps46 in rice defense. (E)-β-farnesene (Eβf) is a major product of tps46 activity but its physiological functions and potential mechanisms against Chilo suppressalis have not yet been clarified. In the present study, C. suppressalis larvae were artificially fed a diet containing 0.8 g/kg Eβf and the physiological performance of the larvae was evaluated. In response to Eβf treatment, the average 2nd instar duration significantly increased from 4.78 d to 6.31 d while that of the 3rd instar significantly increased from 5.70 d to 8.00 d compared with the control. There were no significant differences between the control and Eβf-fed 4th and 5th instars in terms of their durations. The mortalities of the 2nd and 3rd Eβf-fed instars were 21.00-fold and 6.39-fold higher, respectively, than that of the control. A comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that multiple differentially expressed genes are involved in insect hormone biosynthesis. An insect hormone assay on the 3rd instars disclosed that Eβf disrupted the balance between the juvenile hormone and ecdysteroid levels. Eβf treatment increased the juvenile hormones titers but not those of the ecdysteroids. The qPCR results were consistent with those of the RNA-Seq. The foregoing findings suggested that Eβf impairs development and survival in C. suppressalis larvae by disrupting their hormone balance. Moreover, Eβf altered the pathways associated with carbohydrate and xenobiotic metabolism as well as those related to cofactors and vitamins in C. suppressalis larvae. The discoveries of this study may contribute to the development and implementation of an integrated control system for C. suppressalis infestations in rice.

Abstract:The authors have retrospectively analyzed selected surgical and pathological observations made among a group of 20 patients harboring recurrent cranial base meningiomas in an attempt to reveal which factors may be important in predicting tumor recurrence. This cohort was compared with a group of 34 patients with cranial base meningiomas that underwent primary resection and in whom tumor recurrence has not been demonstrated over a median follow-up period of 33 months. Features analyzed included brain, cranial nerve, carotid artery, or muscle invasion as well as tumor cellularity, nucleolar prominence, cellular pleomorphism, and percentage of cells staining positive for the Ki-67 antigen. As expected, increased cellularity and tumor necrosis were relatively more prevalent in recurrent tumors. With regard to tumor type, atypical and anaplastic tumors were more common in the group of patients with recurrent tumor compared with the primary group (p < 0.02). As expected, increased cellularity was relatively more prominent in recurrent tumors. Invasion of muscle and bone (72%) was more frequently associated with recurrent tumors, suggesting that these characteristics may be important features of recurrent skull base meningiomas.
Contrasting effects of ethylene biosynthesis on induced plant resistance against a chewing and a piercing-sucking herbivore in rice

Abstract:Ethylene is a stress hormone with contrasting effects on herbivore resistance. However, it remains unknown whether these differences are plant- or herbivore-specific. We cloned a rice 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase gene, OsACS2, whose transcripts were rapidly up-regulated in response to mechanical wounding and infestation by two important pests: the striped stem borer (SSB) Chilo suppressalis and the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens. Antisense expression of OsACS2 (as-acs) reduced elicited ethylene emission, SSB-elicited trypsin protease inhibitor (TrypPI) activity, SSB-induced volatile release, and SSB resistance. Exogenous application of ACC restored TrypPI activity and SSB resistance. In contrast to SSB, BPH infestation increased volatile emission in as-acs lines. Accordingly, BPH preferred to feed and oviposit on wild-type (WT) plants--an effect that could be attributed to two repellent volatiles, 2-heptanone and 2-heptanol, that were emitted in higher amounts by as-acs plants. BPH honeydew excretion was reduced and natural enemy attraction was enhanced in as-acs lines, resulting in higher overall resistance to BPH. These results demonstrate that ethylene signaling has contrasting, herbivore-specific effects on rice defense responses and resistance against a chewing and a piercing-sucking insect, and may mediate resistance trade-offs between herbivores of different feeding guilds in rice.
