Abstract:Background: To adapt and validate cross-culturally the Oral Health Values (OHVS) questionnaire to Portuguese language. Methods: The OHVS questionnaire was culturally translated and adapted according to international guidelines. We enrolled 280 patients in a population-based epidemiological survey conducted at the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic (Almada, Portugal). The participants answered the Portuguese version of the OHVS (OHVS-PT), which is a 12-item scale with four-factor structure (Professional Dental Care, Appearance and Health, Flossing and Retaining Natural Teeth factor). Psychometric properties were tested using content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, and test–retest reliability. Results: The OHVS-PT presented adequate reliability (ICC = 0.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.86; 0.97, p < 0.001) with values for the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the sub-constructs ranging from 0.92 to 0.98. In the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the final models presented good fit, with the Comparative Fit Indices ranging from 0.882 to 0.891 and the root-mean-squared error of Approximation between 0.065 and 0.069. Conclusions: The OHVS-PT was shown to be a valid and reliable tool to assess oral health values in a Portuguese population. Further studies should evaluate the psychometric properties of the oral personal representation on dental specialties and its impact on dental appointments and procedures.

Brazilian Portuguese translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the “Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities” (CPCHILD©) questionnaire

Abstract:BackgroundConsideration of the quality of life in relation to individual health status is crucial for planning and maintaining a system of patient-centered care. Until recently, there have been no suitable instruments to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL,) of children and adolescents with severe, non-ambulant cerebral palsy (GMFCS functional levels IV and V). The “Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities Questionnaire” (CPCHILD©) was developed in English specifically for this population, and has been validated in Canada. The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the CPCHILD© Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese, thus permitting researchers in Brazil to access this important tool for measuring HRQoL in this population, as well as the possibility of making comparisons with other studies that use the same questionnaire in other languages.MethodThe cross-cultural adaptation included two forward translations by independent translators, their synthesis, two back-translations by independent translators, an assessment of the versions by an expert committee and the development of a pre-final version, which was tested on 30 caregivers of children (5 -18) with severe cerebral palsy (GMFCS IV & V).ResultsDespite the relative equivalence between the two translations, some items required adaptations for the synthesized version. Certain modifications were necessary in the pre-final version to achieve idiomatic equivalence. The modifications were required to account for the socioeconomic and cultural levels of the target population.ConclusionThe translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the CPCHILD© questionnaire provides a Brazilian Portuguese equivalent to measure the HRQoL of children with severe developmental disabilities, with the potential to measure the benefits of various procedures that are indicated for these patients. This adaptation exhibited a satisfactory level of semantic equivalence between the Portuguese target and the original English source versions. The validity of the Brazilian version of the instrument must be established in the future by assessing its psychometric properties on Brazilian epidemiological samples.

Abstract:Background Although caries and malocclusion occur with a high prevalence in Chinese school-age children, there were no appropriate instrument to assess the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) for this population. The aim of our study was to develop a Chinese (Mandarin) version of the Child Oral Health Impact Profile-Short Form 19 (COHIP-SF 19) and provide a preliminary test of its psychometric properties. Methods The Chinese version of COHIP-SF 19 was developed through a standard translation and back translation procedure. The psychometric properties of the instrument were tested among 644 school-age children in Beijing, China, including the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, discriminant and convergent validity. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the capability of the instrument to differentiate children with different caries and malocclusion outcomes. And partial Spearman correlations were used to determine the relationships between the OHRQoL scores and clinical-severity indicators and self-perceived health ratings, respectively. Results Chinese school-age children had relatively high OHRQoL scores, in spite of the fact that oral impacts were quite common (56.3%). The internal consistency and retest reliability were good to excellent with a Chronbach’s alpha of 0.81 and an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.77. Children who had active tooth decay or severe malocclusion had significantly lower COHIP-SF 19 scores ( P ≤0.001). Girls had somewhat higher scores in the oral health and functional well-being subscales ( P <0.05), while children from rural districts had lower scores than children from urban areas ( P <0.05). We observed a low to moderate correlation between the overall COHIP-SF 19, subscale scores and clinical severity indicators as well as self-perceived health ratings, after adjustment for children’s age, gender, and school district (│ r s │ =0.11 - 0.51, P <0.05). Conclusion We confirmed satisfactory psychometric properties for the Chinese version of COHIP-SF 19 in a community sample of Chinese school-age children. The OHRQoL instrument should play a more important role in future clinical studies, epidemiological surveys and potential public health policy in China.

Abstract:Background: There is a lack of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) questionnaires to evaluate pediatric musculoskeletal diseases in Brazil. The Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) is widely used elsewhere for pediatric patients with musculoskeletal disorders, but it has not been fully validated in Brazil. Validation of the PODCI in the Brazilian Portuguese language is important to improve the assessment of pediatric patients with musculoskeletal diseases and to compare Brazilian study results with results from the international literature. This study aimed to analyze the test-re-test reliability and the convergent validity indicators for the quality of life scores obtained by application of the PODCI to children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Methods: The PODCI underwent translation, transcultural adaptation, and field testing. Fifty-seven children and adolescents with JIA were administered the PODCI questionnaire. The Child Health Questionnaire - Parent Form 28 (CHQ PF-28) was used as the gold standard. Pain scales were employed, clinical examinations were performed, and laboratory inflammatory activity tests were conducted. Results: The three versions of the PODCI exhibited good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient > 0.70), good reproducibility (p < 0.05), and good correlation compared with the gold standard (CHQ), as shown by a Spearman coefficient (Rho) > 0.40 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The PODCI was validated in patients with JIA in Brazil. This questionnaire was found to be valid, precise, and reliable. It can be successfully applied in research conducted by healthcare professionals who work with children and adolescents with musculoskeletal system disorders.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To translate the Pediatric Asthma Control and Communication Instrument (PACCI) to Portuguese and adapt it for use in Brazil, ensuring the cultural validity of the content and semantic equivalence of the target version. Methods: The Brazilian Portuguese-language version of the PACCI was developed according to the most commonly used methodology, which included the following steps: translation; synthesis of the translation; review by the author of the original questionnaire; back-translation; synthesis of the back-translation; review by a native external researcher who is a native speaker of English; approval of the author of the original questionnaire; review by a specialist in Portuguese; review by a multidisciplinary committee of experts to determine the agreement of the items, considering the clarity of each and its appropriateness in the cultural context; cognitive debriefing; and development of the final version. The cognitive debriefing involved 31 parents/legal guardians of children 1-21 years of age with a clinical diagnosis of asthma, as defined by the Global Initiative for Asthma, with the objective of determining the comprehensibility and clarity of the items for the target population. Results: The multidisciplinary committee of experts indicated that the items on the questionnaire were clear and comprehensible, with kappa values above 0.61, indicating substantial agreement. In the cognitive debriefing, the parents/legal guardians presented no difficulties in understanding any of the items (agreement > 0.90); therefore, no further changes were needed. Conclusions: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the PACCI for use in Brazil were successful.

Abstract:This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the Brazilian version of the "Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised for Dental" (IPQ-RD) in parents/guardians of children aged six to 14 years. The sample consisted of 63 parents/guardians of schoolchildren from the municipal school system of Teófilo Otoni, MG. Remote and virtual data collection consisted of self-completion of personal data, socioeconomic questionnaire and the Brazilian short versions of the "Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire" (16-P-CPQ) and the "Family Impact Scale" (4-FIS). The IPQ-RD was applied by telephone interview. Almost half of the sample belonged to socioeconomic classes C1 and C2. Approximately 1/3 classified their child's oral health as "regular" or "poor", while 11.1% reported "strong" or "very strong" impact on their child's well-being. The items most frequently cited as having an impact on the four domains of the 16-P-CPQ were: "bad breath" (23.8%), "mouth breathing" (20.7%), "feeling anxious or afraid" (20.7%), and "paying attention at school" (10%). In the 4-FIS, 11.1% "had little time for themselves or the family". There were higher IPQ-RD scores in the "disease coherence" domain for women and lower values of "emotional dimensions" for parents/guardians with incomplete education. The mean IPQ-RD score was 126.4 (±15.1), and domain scores were positively correlated. The internal consistency was "almost perfect" for the IPQ-RD total score, ranging from "moderate" to "almost perfect" for the "child-control" and "child-consequences" domains. The intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.04 (poor) to 0.68 (substantial). The Brazilian Portuguese version of the IPQ-RD proved to be valid and reliable for assessing the cognitive and emotional perception of parents/guardians about childhood dental caries.

Abstract:The school is fundamental for the development of societies and caring for the student is part of the educational process. Reflections on collective health allowed the expansion of the vision of the concept of quality of life considering different social spaces and indicators. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess of some psychometric Properties of the Quality of Life in School instrument into Brazilian Portuguese (QoLS-BR) among elementary school students. The processes of translation, content evaluation, focus group and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were carried out. Reproducibility analysis was performed by administering QoLS-BR to 30 students. The sample used for Internal Consistency and CFA comprised 434 students with a mean age of 12.31 years. High indices of language clarity, practical relevance, theoretical relevance, internal consistency, and reproducibility were obtained. In the AFC, adjustments were not necessary in the QoLS-BR model with four factors (RMSEA=0.065; TLI=0.959; CFI=0.962; SRMR=0.080) indicating that the indices were adequate when investigating all four domains. QoLS-BR has adequate psychometric indicators for investigating the quality of life in school.

Abstract:Background: Quality assessment in oncology nursing care has been a growing topic in the literature, gaining relevance as oncological nursing care becomes more complex as the science progresses. However, there are no instruments that assess the perception of the quality of oncology nursing care from the point of view of patients for the Portuguese population. Thus, the cross-cultural translation and validation of the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale (QONCS) was performed for the Portuguese context. This instrument allows nurses to assess patients' self-perception of the quality of nursing care provided in an oncological setting. It also allows researchers to compare the results obtained internationally with the application of this scale. Methods: This is a methodological study, with two distinct phases: the first corresponded to the translation and cultural adaptation of the scale to the Portuguese context, and the second consisted of the psychometric validation of the QONCS, which included factor analysis and the evaluation of the psychometric properties of the instrument. We obtained responses from 402 patients from a Portuguese oncology hospital. Results: The Portuguese version of the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale (QONCS_PT) consists of 34 items inserted into a tetra-factorial model, which explains a total variance of the instrument of 69.8%. A Cronbach's alpha of 0.93 was obtained for the complete instrument. Conclusions: QONCS_PT has a competent and reliable structure. The scale's validity was assured and can be used in the Portuguese population, as it is useful for direct care provision but also for researchers and managers.

Abstract:Background: The Activity Scale for Kids (ASK) assesses the physical disability of children (5 to 15 years old) with neurological, orthopaedic or rheumatic diseases. The objective of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the ASK for Brazilian Portuguese and assess the validity and reliability of the instrument. Methods: A total of 67 children and adolescents with musculoskeletal, neurological or rheumatic diseases participated in the study. We evaluated the comprehension of the pre-final version of the questionnaire in 24 participants and reliability and validity in the other 43 participants. The translation and adaptation of ASK to Brazilian Portuguese followed guidelines from previous studies. The validity of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the ASK was verified through Spearman's correlation with the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ Version 4.0 (PedQL). Intraclass correlation coefficient verified inter- and intra-evaluator reliability, while internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Scores were used to assess the standard error of the mean and minimal detectable change. Results: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the ASK presented excellent reliability, internal consistency, agreement and moderate correlation with PedsQL (0.522, P < 0.001) between ASK performance and PedsQL; 0.537, P < 0.001 between ASK capacity and PedsQL. Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the ASK has good validity and reliability and may be used by professionals and researchers to assess the functioning of children and adolescents with disabilities.

Abstract:The Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool (MOHOST) was developed in the UK and measures the occupational participation. Until its translation, there were no standardised instruments in Brazil of a similar nature. To describe the translation and cross-cultural adaptation process of the MOHOST for Brazil, its face validity and test-retest reliability among occupational therapists. A translation agreement was established allowing the assessment to be translated and honed after a back translation. An expert committee was formed of ten occupational therapists to test face validity of the instrument with 50 occupational therapists. Statistical analysis was employed to investigate whether the occupational therapists’ understanding of the MOHOST was linked to their length of clinical experience. The test-retest reliability was examined among a sample of eight adults with physical disabilities. The cross-cultural adaptation of the Brazilian MOHOST has been completed. A significant correlation (p=0.04) was found between years of professional experience and greater understanding of the MOHOST items. The MOHOST presented very high reliability in the test-retest (r>0.900). A Brazilian translation of the MOHOST has face validation and test-retest reliability. Future studies addressing this instrument’s psychometric properties of validity and inter-rater reliability are recommended.

Abstract:BackgroundPatient-reported outcomes measurement instruments (PRO) are a good way to measure results after aesthetic procedures. FACE-Q is a systematized and standardized PRO tool and was not available in Portuguese.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included four stages: translation of FACE-Q, backtranslation, testing in patients who underwent facial aesthetic procedures and review of the questionnaires between September and December, 2018. Guidelines merging WHO and ISPOR's rules were followed.ResultsTranslation was conducted by two translators, resulting in two versions, translation A and translation B, which were reconciled to generate the first Portuguese version. Reconciliation showed inconsistencies between TA and TB in 63% (n = 222) of the 353 questions, which were solved by maintaining TA in 25% of cases (n = 87), TB in 27% and a new version in 11% (n = 40) of the questions. Backtranslation showed written differences with the original FACE-Q in 64 (22.7%) of the 353 question, but only one case of semantic difference, which was corrected resulting in production of the second Portuguese version. Seven patients with a mean age of 35.8 years were interviewed to assess the difficulty in understanding the questionnaires. Four patients had no or minor difficulties understanding the questionnaire, and the other three had difficulties and suggested changes that led to a third Portuguese version. The third version was reviewed for grammar and spelling resulting in the final Portuguese version.ConclusionA Brazilian Portuguese version of the FACE-Q questionnaire was obtained maintaining equivalency with the source instrument. This will allow cross-cultural research and comparison of results between different studies.Level of Evidence V

Abstract:Objective: to conduct the cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the Family Integration Experience Scale: Chronic Illness in Brazilian Portuguese. Method: a methodological study divided into two stages. In the first stage, the Family Integration Experience Scale: Chronic Illness was cross-culturally adapted for Brazilian culture, when the scale was subjected to translations, back-translations, and a committee of judges - to verify the semantic, linguistic, and contextual equivalence between the original and translated items. The second step was to validate the scale in a sample of families of children and adolescents with chronic illnesses. The participants were 230 families of children with chronic illnesses attending the outpatient clinic of a tertiary public hospital with teaching and research characteristics. Results: internal consistency was tested using Cronbach's alpha (0.81) and McDonald's omega (0.81). Confirmatory factor analysis was also tested, and the model's fit was acceptable for validation standards. Conclusion: the version of the Family Integration Experience Scale: Chronic Illness showed evidence of validation and can be considered a valid and reliable instrument in Brazilian culture. The Brazilian Portuguese version of the Family Integration Experience Scale: Chronic Illness can be used to measure the experience of family integration in chronic illness.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Considering the ability of the health and self-management in diabetes questionnaire (HASMID-10) to verify the impact of self-management on diabetes, we highlight its relevance to scientific research and clinical applicability. However, to date, no study has been conducted to scientifically support its use in other languages.OBJECTIVE: To translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the HASMID-10 into the Brazilian Portuguese.DESIGN AND SETTING: A translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation study conducted at Ceuma University.METHODS: Study was conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures and Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments. We included participants of both sexes diagnosed with diabetes, aged between 18 and 64 years, and without cognitive deficits or any other limitations that would prevent them from answering the questionnaire. We assessed participants using the problem areas in diabetes (PAID) scale and HASMID-10. We assessed reliability using a test-retest model with a 7-day interval between assessments. We used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), 95% confidence interval (CI), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable difference (MDD), Spearman correlation coefficient, and floor and ceiling effects.RESULTS: Sample comprised 116 participants, most of whom were women, overweight, non-practitioners of physical activity, and nonsmokers. We observed significant correlations (P = 0.006; rho = -0.256) between the HASMID-10 and PAID, adequate reliability (ICC = 0.780) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.796). No ceiling or floor effects were observed.CONCLUSION: HASMID-10 has adequate measurement properties and may be used for Brazilians.

Abstract:Introduction Despite the high prevalence of sickle cell disease (SCD) in Brazil, no studies have described the validation of an SCD‐specific health‐related quality‐of‐life (HRQoL) instrument in children. We validated PedsQL 3.0 Sickle Cell Disease Module (PedsQL‐SCD) for Brazilian Portuguese, and cross‐validated it with PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scale (PedsQL‐GCS) in children with SCD. Methods PedsQL‐SCD was translated and culturally adapted using forward and reverse translations. PedsQL‐SCD and PedsQL‐GCS were tested in children and adolescents with SCD aged 2–18 years and their caregivers. Validity was assessed using the Pearson and intraclass correlation coefficients, and reliability measured with Cronbach's alpha. Results PedsQL‐SCD was validated in 206 children with SCD (median age 14 years, range: 8–18) and 201 caregivers. Among patients and caregivers, the mean total score for PedsQL‐SCD was 65.7 and 64.1, respectively. The mean total score for PedsQL‐GCS was 73.1 and 68.9 among patients and caregivers, respectively. The internal consistency for PedsQL‐SCD and PedsQL‐GCS was good; Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranged from .59–.93 to .64–.83 among patients and from .60–.95 to .65–.85 among caregivers, respectively. Most intercorrelations between PedsQL‐SCD and PedsQL‐GCS, for patients and caregivers, had medium to large effect sizes (range: .23–.63 and .27–.64, respectively). Pain and pain impact domains of PedsQL‐SCD and physical dimension of PedsQL‐GCS had the highest cross‐correlation (.63 and .6 for patients; .63 and .64 for caregivers, respectively), confirming convergent construct validity. Conclusion PedsQL‐SCD is a valid, culturally appropriate measure to assess HRQoL in children with SCD in Brazil and is well‐correlated PedsQL‐GCS.

Abstract:OTJR: Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, Ahead of Print. The Occupational Self-Assessment version 2.2 (OSA) is a self-assessment of the client's occupational competence and values. To describe the process of cross-cultural adaptation of OSA into Brazilian Portuguese (OSA-Brazil) and examine its reliability and validity for use with the Brazilian population. Assessment translation was guided by two international guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of standardized instruments. Face validity was tested with 24 participants. Internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and convergent validity were tested with a convenience sample of 40 participants. The cross-cultural adaptation process concluded with a consensus among the expert panel review (r > 80%) and evidence of strong face validity. The OSA-Brazil demonstrated appropriate test–retest reliability (r > 0.70) and convergent validity with the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) (p < .05). The OSA-Brazil has good face validity, test–retest reliability, and convergent validity. The assessment can be used by the Brazilian occupational therapists to assess client's occupational competence.

Abstract:Objective: Translating and cross-culturally adapting the CFAbd-Score, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Abdominal Score, to use in Brazilian spoken Portuguese. The CFAbd-Score is a questionnaire for assessing CF-related abdominal symptoms and their influence on the quality of life (QoL). It comprises 28 questions on five domains: abdominal pain, bowel movements, eating and appetite, gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, and the impact of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms on QoL. Method: Cross-cultural adaptation included assessment of conceptual and item equivalence, semantic, operational, and measurement equivalence. Content validity was assessed. The validation and psychometric analysis phase included 97 people with CF (pwCF), median age:14.58y (IQR 9/19), and 105 healthy individuals, 15.10y (IQR 9/20). Exploratory factor analysis (FA) identified retained factors. Internal consistency of the extracted domains was evaluated using Cronbach's α, and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test (KMO) was used to check the sample adequacy. Bartlett's test tested the null hypothesis that the correlation matrix is an identity matrix. Results: All items were considered relevant to the construct and good semantic equivalence of the version was recognized. FA showed the appropriate weight of all items and good internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha 0.89. Bartlett's test significance level (p < 0.001) and KMO coefficient of 0.72 indicated good adequacy for structure. Internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) were good for abdominal pain: 0.84; abdominal bloating: 0.73; flatulence: 0.76; heartburn: 0.81, and low for reflux: 0.54. Conclusion: The CFAbd-Score was adapted to the Brazilian spoken Portuguese and demonstrated content and semantic equivalence. The final version showed appropriate validity, and internal consistency, preserving the psychometric properties of the original version.

Abstract:Journal of Family Nursing, Ahead of Print. Illness beliefs have a role in the adaptation, coping, well-being, healing, and recovery in families of children/adolescents with chronic illness. The assessment of family illness beliefs can support family nursing interventions that address the suffering of family members when illness arises. The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and psychometrically test the Portuguese version of the Iceland-Family Illness Beliefs Questionnaire. A sample of 237 parents of children/adolescents who experienced chronic health conditions completed the online questionnaire. The original factor model was tested through confirmatory factorial analysis. The results showed satisfactory model fit indices (χ2/gl = 3.004; comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.90; root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.092) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.74). The instrument showed good psychometric characteristics of validity and reliability, suggesting it may be useful in the assessment of illness beliefs in families experiencing a pediatric chronic illness.

Abstract:With Mallory techniques the differential staining characteristics in the human adenohypophysis are mainly dependent upon the treatment with phosphotungstic acid. Though this does not remove dye which is already bound to the acidophils it prevents the subsequent access there of anilin blue or acid fuschin, but not of orange G. The molybdenum blue reaction, used after treatment of sections with phosphomolybdic acid, shows that hexavalent molybdenum is strongly bound to the basiphils but more weakly to the acidophils; it can be inferred that phosphotungstic acid reacts with the tissues in a similar manner. Deamination, acetylation, and benzoylation produce a marked reduction in dye-binding, though the granules of the basiphils are resistant to the benzoylation. Methylation results in a marked increase in the staining of all elements. The differential effect of the phosphotungstic acid is abolished, so that the dyes are able to gain admission to the acidophils after the polyacid treatment. The differential staining is most probably dependent upon the differing permeabilities of the tissue proteins to molecules of differing sizes, the acid fuchsin, anilin blue, and phosphotungstic acid competing with each other for basic groups. On the other hand, it is possible that phosphotungstic acid has a different type of reaction with the acidophils, involving chelate linkages to carboxyl and other groups of the tissue proteins.
