Abstract:A series of novel and effective polymer stabilizers with exceptional performance against light, heat, and oxygen degradation of polypropylene, underpinned by an intramolecular synergy mechanism between cardanol and piperidine derivatives. Bio‐based antioxidants have garnered attention for their sustainability and environmental benefits. In this study, we designed and synthesized three cardanol‐piperidine derivatives (HSs) by utilizing hydrogenated cardanol (HC) and piperidine derivatives to improve the aging inhibition of polypropylene (PP). These bio‐based antioxidants were intended as eco‐friendly alternatives to conventional synthetic antioxidants. The impact of these HSs on the thermal stability, thermo‐oxidative stability, and light stability of PP was thoroughly evaluated. The results unveiled that after 5 h of interaction with 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl free radical, HSs exhibited a remarkable over 5‐fold increase in free radical scavenging efficiency as compared to HC. Moreover, the addition of HSs significantly increased the oxidation induction time and the initial oxidation temperature compared to pristine PP. After photo‐oxidative aging and thermo‐oxidative aging, the HS‐dosed PP demonstrated remarkable retention of elongation at break, reaching more than 72% and 69%. From the comparison with physical mixtures and the density functional theory calculations, an intramolecular synergism mechanism is proposed. The intramolecular synergism between hydrogenated cardanol and piperidine derivatives may be the main reason for the inhibition of PP aging. Highlights A method for constructing simultaneous efficient light, thermal, and oxygen stable polypropylene. The mechanism for achieving simultaneous stabilization of light, heat, and oxygen is the intramolecular synergy of phenol piperidine. The essence of intramolecular synergy of cardanol and piperidine derivatives is its' reduced hydrogen bond dissociation energy and energy gap.

Abstract:<p>The two macromolecular antioxidants, P(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy cinnamic acid-alt-N-phenylmaleimide) (PCN) and P(3-butene-1-yl-3,5-di-tert-butyl −4-hydroxyphenyl propionate-alt-N-phenylmaleimide) (PPN) were designed and synthesized via free radical copolymerization. The structures of the resulting PCN and PPN antioxidants were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (<sup>1</sup>H NMR), and gel permeation chromatography. In addition, the effect of the two macromolecular antioxidants on the thermal oxidation aging resistance of polyamide 6 (PA6) was studied. According to the analysis of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, dynamic viscosity, and the mechanical property of PA6 and its blends, these two types of macromolecular antioxidants protected the molecular chain of PA6 from breaking, protected the crystallization of PA6 and maintained the stability of PA6 crystal form, improved the activation energy of thermal degradation and thermal stability of PA6, enhanced the strength and elasticity of PA6 and maintained the mechanical properties of PA6 during aging to a certain extent.</p>

Abstract:This paper proposes a physio-chemically-based constitutive framework to predict the response of severely photo-oxidatively aged semi-crystalline polymers. Photo-oxidation induced by the exposure to Ultra-Violet (UV) light and oxygen is one of the main and dominant degradation mechanisms affecting the lifespan of polymers. In this work, we first characterize the physio-chemical changes of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to understand and map the photo-oxidation degradation process. Changes in crystallinity and mass loss are characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D) experiments, respectively. The evolution of crystallinity and mass loss relative to the initial pristine films over exposure time are considered as indicators of material degradation. Based on these tests, we then propose evolution functions for the material properties in the polymer constitutive equations to incorporate the effects of photo-oxidation on the mechanical responses. Connecting the physio-chemical processes affecting polymer network evolution to the mechanical response of LDPE eliminates the need for defining extra fitting parameters that carry no physical meaning. The developed constitutive framework is validated with respect to a series of in-house uniaxial tensile tests performed on LDPE aged for different UV exposure times. Validation of the proposed constitutive framework confirms the accuracy of DSC and QCM-D as rigorous techniques in the characterization of degradation in LDPE films, and confirms the robustness of the developed framework in predicting the mechanical responses of photo-oxidatively aged LDPE.

Finally, an accelerated aging protocol was set up to evaluate variations in polymer properties and estimate the evolution of the potential of different antioxidants tested over time and with aging. Enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of 4-methylcatechol oligomer and preliminary evaluations as stabilizing agent in polypropylene

Abstract:Abstract In the present work, 4-methylcatechol oligomer has been prepared by using enzyme-catalyzed polymerization in water and preliminary evaluations as stabilizing agent in polypropylene (PP) was performed. In comparison with intrinsic PP, the oxidation onset temperature of the 4-methylcatechol oligomer/PP composite increased by 66°C, and the oxidation induction time increased by 40 min. In addition, the mixing of a 4-methylcatechol oligomer with PP (i.e., in the formation of a 4-methylcatechol oligomer/PP composite) did significantly enhance the long-term stability of PP in a thermal oxidative environment. Moreover, the tensile strength of this composite did not significantly decrease after aging for 800 h in an air atmosphere at 120°C. These results show that the addition of a 4-methylcatechol oligomer will markedly delay the aging and degradation of PP materials, even under extreme conditions. Thus, an enzyme-catalyzed polymerization of phenol compounds may provide a new avenue toward the preparation of novel antioxidants.

Construction of Nontoxic Polymeric UV-Absorber with Great Resistance to UV-Photoaging.

Abstract:In this article, we developed a series of new nontoxic polymeric UV-absorbers through covalently attaching a benzophenone derivative onto the main chain of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) via mild and quantitative click chemistry. Azide groups were firstly introduced into the backbone of PVC via a nucleophilic reaction without affecting polymeric skeleton. Copper-catalyzed Husigen-Click cycloaddition reaction was performed between the pendant azide groups of PVC and alkynyl of (2-hydroxy-4-(prop-2-ynyloxy) phenyl)(phenyl) methanone at ambient temperature for affording the desired PVC-based UV-absorbers (PVC-UV) with different amounts of benzophenone moieties, which displayed great resistance to photoaging without degradation while exposed to UV irradiation. These polymeric UV-absorbers also showed good solubilities in common organic solvents and no cytotoxicity vs. HaCat cell. Small amounts of PVC-UV were homogeneously mixed with PVC as additive for stabilizing PVC against UV-photoaging without degradation and releasing small molecule even after 200 h while keeping thermal stability. This route of polymeric additive clearly paved an efficient way for solving the puzzle of separation of small molecule additive.
Investigation of anti‐ozone effects of phenolic natural antiozonants in cis‐1,4‐polybutadiene rubber composites via molecular simulation and experimental validation

Abstract:This article utilizes molecular simulation and experimental validation to conclude that the anti‐ozone effects of three natural antiozonants are pterostilbene > flavonols > ferulic acid. In particular, molecular simulations analyzed the effects of chemical and physical factors on the effectiveness of the antiozonants, and found that physical factors had a greater influence if comparing with chemical factors in these systems. The large number of unsaturated double bonds contained in the cis‐1,4‐polybutadiene rubber (BR) makes it susceptible to the problem of ozone aging. At this point in the industry, adding a synthetic antiozonant, like N‐(1,3‐dimethylbutyl)‐N′‐phenyl‐p‐phenylenediamine (6PPD), is the most popular way to delay the rubber ozone aging process. However, several recent studies have shown that 6PPD is hazardous to biological health. In order to find less toxic and environmentally friendly antiozonants, natural antiozonants are considered as rubber additions. Due to some limitations of traditional experimental methods, the structure–property relationship during ozone aging is not studied thoroughly enough from the mechanistic aspect. Therefore, this study will use a combination of molecular simulation and experimental methods to investigate the anti‐ozone effect of three phenolic natural antiozonants in BR. The experimental results show that the anti‐ozone effects were: pterostilbene > flavonol > ferulic acid, which is consistent with the simulation prediction. This study may provide candidates for screening natural antiozonants in the direction of anti‐aging in rubber composites.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant natural aromatic polymer globally but is still underutilized as a renewable material, even with its versatile properties. One approach to using lignin is to incorporate it in polymer composites, but this application is often limited by the poor mechanical performance of the resultant composite due to the poor interfacial adhesion. Following the structure–property relationship, stronger interactions were designed to be enhanced by alternating the functional groups of lignin. This study applied a demethylation method to hardwood lignin (Ori-Lig) to introduce more phenolic hydroxyl groups. Research studies with rheology behavior and molecular simulations demonstrated that an increased phenolic hydroxyl content could improve the adhesion between the modified lignin (OH-Lig) and the polymer matrix at the interface. The tensile performance of the samples from the fused depositional modeling (FDM) 3D printing technique was also improved due to the improved interfacial adhesion. Specifically, by adding 10 wt% of the modified lignin, the tensile strength of the 3D printed samples could reach 46.1 MPa (40.2 MPa of Polyamide 12, PA12), and Young's Modulus could be improved to 1.73 GPa (1.48 GPa of PA12). OH-Lig also improved anti-aging performance so that the tensile strength of the OH-Lig composite after thermo-aging (100 h at 140 °C) remained ∼ 48 MPa. The enhanced mechanical performance with anti-aging properties indicated that the OH-Lig composite may replace PA12 to reduce the use of petrol-based materials. This work showed the method of purposefully designing and modifying lignin structures to fulfill the interaction requirements between lignin and polymer matrix. The as-prepared lignin could be used to prepare functional composites to achieve improved mechanical performance and targeted functions at the same time.

Abstract:Few studies are concerned with the stabilization of polymers using natural polymeric polyphenols. There are no literature reports on the use of poly(flavonoids) produced by bio-chemical polymerization as stabilizers. The aim of the research was to analyse the stabilizing potential (anti-ageing UV) of poly(catechin) and poly(naringenin) in polymer compositions based on the thermoplastic elastomer of ethylene-norbornene copolymer (TOPAS Elastomer E-140). Poly(flavonoids) were obtained in a polymerization reaction with a cross-linking compound and then introduced into cyclic olefin copolymer TOPAS. For comparison, materials with monomeric catechin and naringenin were also prepared. The scope of research included the thermal analysis of the polymer compositions (Oxidation induction time OIT, Thermogravimetry TG), determination of carbonyl indices and ageing coefficients K (based on changes in mechanical properties) after UV ageing (400 h). In addition, the colour change after ageing of the samples was investigated. Samples containing polymeric forms of catechin and naringenin were more susceptible to degradation than samples with monomeric flavonoids. Inferior stabilizing properties of poly(flavonoids) were associated with steric hindrances and limited availability of hydroxyl groups to provide the antioxidant activity of the polymeric compounds. The work extends the literature data by providing an analysis of the stabilizing effect of synthetic poly(flavonoids) in polymer compositions.

Abstract:In this study, chitosan (CS)‐based macromolecular synergistic antioxidant CS‐UC‐TDAA containing carbon–carbon double bond, hindered phenol, and aromatic secondary amine was prepared by using CS,10‐undecenoyl chloride (UC), p‐aminobenzoic acid (AA), 3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde (TD) via esterification, Schiff base reaction, and acylation reaction. The molecular structure of CS‐UC‐TDAA was characterized by fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. The effects of macromolecular synergistic antioxidant CS‐UC‐TDAA, small molecular antioxidant TDAA, commercial antioxidant 4020, and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) on the antiaging properties of styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR)/SiO2 composites were systematically studied by accelerated thermo‐oxidative aging test, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and methanol Soxhlet extraction experiment. The experimental results show that CS‐UC‐TDAA has more outstanding thermo‐oxidative aging resistance, thermal stability, and solvent extraction resistance in SBR/SiO2 composites than TDAA, 4020, and BHT. The macromolecular synergistic antioxidant CS‐UC‐TDAA endows SBR/SiO2 composites with more durable antiaging performance, which is attributed to the synergistic antioxidant effect of its hindered phenol and aromatic secondary amine groups. Additionally, its resistance to migration and extraction is facilitated by the crosslinking of the carbon–carbon double bond with the rubber and its substantial molecular weight.

Abstract:A novel sulfur-bearing hindered phenolic antioxidant with a molecular weight of 1305.9 (SAO) was successfully synthesized via thiol-acrylate Michael addition reaction and its structure was clarified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The short-term oxidation induction time (OIT) of polypropylene (PP) compounds obtained at 210 degrees C showed that the OIT value of SAO-containing PP was higher than that of PP using Chinox 1035 with a molecular weight of 642.9 as a stabilizer. Long-term accelerated thermal aging test of PP compounds in an air oven at 150 degrees C, however, exhibited that the aging resistance of SAO-stabilizing PP was inferior to that of 1035-containing PP, quite contrary to their respective short-term effect on PP stabilization. The possible reasons of this contradiction were discussed from the viewpoint of the antioxidants' molecular structure and the limitations of the OIT approach in lifetime prediction. Abstract:Seaweed polysaccharides can be used for protective skin photoaging which caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet B. In this study, a multifunctional composite hydrogel (FACP5) is prepared using sulfated galactofucan polysaccharides, alginate oligosaccharides as active ingredients, and polyacrylonitrile modified κ-Carrageenan κ-Carrageenan as substrate. The properties of FACP5 show that it has good water retention, spread ability and adhesion. The antiphotoaging activity was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the components of FACP5 exhibit good biocompatibility, antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase activities, and could reduce the cell death rate induced by UVB. In vivo experiments demonstrate that compared with the mice skin in model group, the skin water content treated with FACP5 increases by 29.80%; the thickness of epidermis and dermis decrease by 53.56% and 43.98%, respectively; the activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase increase by 1.59 and 0.72 times, respectively; the contents of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α decrease by 19.21% and 17.85%, respectively; hydroxyproline content increases by 32.42%; the expression level of matrix metalloproteinase-3 downregulates by 42.80%. These results indicate that FACP5 have the activities of repairing skin barrier, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and inhibiting collagen degradation, and can be used as a skin protection remedy for photoaging. Effect of antiaging agents on the outdoor natural weathering of bamboo powder/polypropylene foamed composites

Abstract:The effect of outdoor natural weathering on the properties of injection molded 33 wt% bamboo powder (BP)/polypropylene (PP) foamed composites with and without the antioxidant and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) were investigated. The composites containing the antiaging agents had higher color stability, slightly greater retentions of flexural modulus, tensile and notched impact strengths, higher creep resistance, and better rheological stability than the reference composite. The antiaging agents of pentaerythritol tetrakis(3‐(3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)propionate) and poly‐(n‐hydroxyethyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐4‐hydroxy‐piperidyl succinate) had more beneficial effect than n‐octadecyl‐β‐(4‐hydroxy‐3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐phenyl)‐propionate and bis(2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐4‐piperidinyl)sebacate. After 12 months of exposure, △ E * decreased from 22.8 of the reference composite to 9.9 of the composite with the antiaging agents. Rheological behavior results indicated that the storage modulus, complex viscosity, and non‐Newtonian fluid index of composites containing the antiaging agents were slightly increased. Natural weathering caused less decreases in the storage and loss moduli, crossover modulus, relaxation time, and average molecular weight for composites containing the antiaging agents than those for the reference composite. Abstract:Rubbers containing a high number of unsaturated units face significant challenges due to ozone aging. In industrial production, p-phenylenediamines are commonly used as synthetic antiozonants to protect against ozone degradation. However, their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment are gradually being recognized. Experimentally selecting antioxidants is costly and subject to numerous restrictions. Consequently, developing a new strategy for efficiently screening eco-friendly antioxidants is crucial. This study involved a comparative analysis of three natural antioxidants and examined the factors influencing their ozone resistance through multi-scale molecular simulation methods. Subsequently, these antioxidants were incorporated into a solution polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber matrix. Their performance was experimentally validated and compared with the standard N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine control. Analysis of the properties and microstructure in the experiments revealed the following order of ozone resistance: α-tocopherol > sinapic acid > gallic acid. This ranking aligns well with the predictions of the simulations. Abstract:Highlights Two series of terpolymers with improved photostability were realized by the introduction of appropriate ratio of antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene unit containing side chains. All-polymer solar cells and organic photodetectors (OPDs) with these terpolymers as both donors and acceptors have been prepared with simultaneously improved efficiency and stability. A feasible approach to develop terpolymers with antioxidant efficacy for improving the lifetime of organic solar cells and OPDs is proposed.

Abstract:Abstract In 46 consecutive patients treated surgically for acoustic neuroma and followed for a minimum of two years, there was no operative mortality; 90 per cent returned to their previous level of activity, and all were able to care for themselves. Total removal of tumor was possible in 70 per cent, and radical subtotal removal in another 10 per cent. Facial-nerve function was preserved in 80 per cent, even in some patients with a large tumor. Any patient with progressive, unexplained hearing loss should have audiometric vestibular evaluation. If tumor is suspected, x-ray studies are indicated, including tomography and neuroradiologic contrast studies, with positive-contrast encephalography if clinical signs are limited to the eighth nerve, and pneumoencephalography when signs indicate a large lesion. When diagnostic studies suggest a small tumor (less than 2.0 cm in diameter), total removal can usually be accomplished by a translabyrinthine operation unless there is fifth-nerve involvement. Infectious Effect of Organic Small Molecules on Photo-oxidative Aging of Polypropylene

Abstract:Aging of a polymer is generally affected by adjacent polymers, known as infectious behavior of aging. Organic small molecules generated during aging are considered to be infection agents. However, the way they influence aging process and the difference among various infection agents are still unknown. In this paper, the influence of 18 representative organic small molecules on photo-oxidative aging of polypropylene (PP) was studied. The small molecules included acids, esters, aldehydes, ketones and alcohols, corresponding to typical photo-oxidative degradation products of polymers. When they were placed near PP during aging, the carbonyl index (CI) of PP was higher compared to the case when PP was aged individually. It was demonstrated that photo-oxidative aging of PP was accelerated by all the small molecules. The acceleration effects of acids, aldehydes and ketones were outstanding. Especially for propanoic acid, isobutyric acid, methacrylic acid, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and butanone, CI was increased by more than 700% when PP was aged with them. Further, infection mechanism of acetone and acetic acid was investigated , since they had been identified as typical infection agents. CI and concentrations of gaseous degradation products of PP with and without acetone or acetic acid were measured with aging time. When PP was aged with acetone, CI was increased from as early as 24 h at an extremely high rate. With acetic acid, CI was increased after an obvious induction period and the increasing rate was lower than that with acetone. Similar phenomenon was observed in gaseous degradation products. The results showed that acetone acted as an initiator, photolyzed to generate CH3 center dot that could initiate the oxidation of PP; while acetic acid acted as a catalyzer, facilitating the decomposition of hydroperoxides and the accumulation of oxidation products.

Abstract:To promote the anti-aging performance of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) versus ultraviolet (UV)/O-3 exposure, a nano-TiO2-loaded antioxidant (TiO2-KH570-MB) was prepared by a thiol-ene reaction between 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MB) and modified nano-TiO2 (TiO2-KHS70). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the chemical linkage between MB and modified nano-TiO2, and the loading amount of MB was approximately 5.19 wt %. The contact angle test showed that the surface hydrophobicity of TiO2-KHS70-MB was significantly increased due to the immobilization of MB. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that TiO2-KHS70-MB was uniformly distributed in the TPV matrix. The anti-aging property of TPV compounds was tested in the device with high-intensity ultraviolet radiation and high-concentration ozone. The effects of UV/O-3 comprehensive aging on the TPV compounds were evaluated by means of the variations of surface morphology, tensile test, hardness, gel content, and carbonyl index with aging time. On the basis of the aging behavior, we concluded that TPV/TiO2-KH570-MB exhibited excellent stability against UV/O-3 aging, due to the homogeneous dispersion, low level of migration, and low volatility of TiO2-KH570-MB.

Abstract:A combined study of molecular simulation and experimental methods is presented for trimethylolpropane trioleate (TMPTO) with different alkylated diphenylamine antioxidants: 4,4′-dimethyldiphenylamine (DMDPA), 4,4′-dioctyldiphenylamine (ODA), and 4,4′-dinonyldiphenylamine (T558) to investigate the mobility, activity, and O 2 migration of antioxidants. The solubility parameter ( δ ), binding energy ( E binding ), mean square displacement (MSD), hydrogen bond dissociation energy (BDE), and solubility coefficient of O 2 ( P ) were calculated by molecular simulation. The simulation results showed that the antioxidant T558 exhibits lower mobility and better physical resistance to O 2 penetration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1,1-diphenylamine-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine (DPPH) radical scavenging, pressure differential scanning calorimetry (PDSC), and surface tension were investigated by experiments. The experimental results showed that antioxidant T558 with larger relative molecular mass and longer amine para-alkyl chain exhibited better antioxidant properties, which was in an agreement with simulation results. The aim of this study is to provide a molecular-level theoretical basis for the anti-ageing protection of lubricants.
