Abstract:The challenge of removing trace levels of heavy metal ions, particularly uranium, from wastewater is a critical concern in environmental management. Uranium, a key element in long-term nuclear power generation, often poses significant extraction difficulties in wastewater due to its low concentration, interference from other ions, and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. This study introduces an anodic electrodeposited hierarchical porous 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu-BDC-NH2@graphene oxide (GO) membrane for effective uranium extraction by mimicking the function of the superb-uranyl-binding protein. This membrane is characterized by its hierarchical pillared-layer structures resulting from the controlled orientation of Cu-BDC-NH2 MOFs within the laminated GO layers during the electrodeposition process. The integration of amino groups from 2D Cu-BDC-NH2 and carboxylate groups from GO enables a high affinity to uranyl ions, achieving an unprecedented uranium adsorption capacity of 1078.4 mg/g and outstanding selectivity. Our findings not only demonstrate a breakthrough in uranium extraction technology but also pave the way for advancements in water purification and sustainable energy development, proposing a practical and efficient strategy for creating orientation-tunable 2D MOFs@GO membranes tailored for high-efficiency uranium extraction.

Abstract:In this study, a graphene oxide nanoribbons/chitosan (GONRs/CTS) composite membrane was successfully prepared by encapsulating CTS into GONRs, which were unzipped from multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The GONRs/CTS composite membrane so prepared was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of the experimental conditions such as the pH (2‒7), adsorbent dosage (10‒50 mg), experimental time (5 min–32 h), uranium concentration (25‒300 mg∙L−1), experimental temperature (298 K‒328 K) on the adsorption properties of the composite membrane for the removal of U(VI) were investigated. The results showed that the U(VI) adsorption process of the GONRs/CTS composite membrane was pH-dependent, rapid, spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-secondary kinetics and Langmuir models. The maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity of the GONRs/CTS composite membrane was calculated to be 320 mg∙g−1. Hence, the GONRs/CTS composite membrane prepared in this study was found to be suitable for separating and recovering uranium from wastewater.
An efficient and high-capacity porous functionalized-membranes for uranium recovery from wastewater

Abstract:In order to satisfy the increasing needs for sustainable development of the nuclear energy industry, it is critical to vigorously develop efficient materials for uranium separation and recovery from wastewater. In this work, novel amidoxime-functionalized membranes (PAO membranes) were successfully synthesized via a facile one-step non-solvent induce phase separation rather than as-reported synthesized approaches that needed complicated additives or harsh reaction conditions. The pore channels provided large specific surface areas and massive binding sites, and the bulk-shape membrane was convenient for collection. Removal of uranium as a function of initial pH, reaction time, initial concentrations of U(VI), and temperature was studied. The maximum adsorption capacity of the PAO membranes toward U(VI) calculated from the Langmuir model was up to 641.72 mg·g−1 at pH 5 and 298 K. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the enrichment of U(VI) was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The removal percentage of uranium reached 86.50% in simulated wastewater in the case of multiple coexisting metal ions. In addition, the scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed that the abundant adsorption sites of the PAO membranes were responsible for the efficient immobilization of uranium by forming chelating species, especially amidoxime groups and carboxyl groups. This work presents a novel strategy for mass production of a new generation of high-efficiency adsorbents for uranium-containing wastewater treatment in the future.

A poly(amidoxime)-modified MOF macroporous membrane for high-efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Abstract:Abstract Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) own excellent uranium adsorption capacity but are still difficult to conveniently extract uranium from seawater due to the discrete powder state. In this study, a new MOF-based macroporous membrane has been explored, which can high-efficiently extract uranium through continuously filtering seawater. Through modifying the UiO-66 with poly(amidoxime) (PAO), it can disperse well in a N,N -dimethylformamide solution of graphene oxide and cotton fibers. Then, the as-prepared super-hydrophilic MOF-based macroporous membrane can be fabricated after simple suction filtration. Compared with nonmodified MOFs, this UiO-66@PAO can be dispersed uniformly in the membrane because it can stabilize well in the solution, which have largely enhanced uranium adsorbing capacity owing to the modified PAO. Last but not least, different from powder MOFs, this UiO-66@PAO membrane provides the convenient and continuously uranium adsorbing process. As a consequence, the uranium extraction capacity of this membrane can reach 579 mg·g −1 in 32 ppm U-added simulated seawater for only 24 h. Most importantly, this UiO-66@PAO membrane (100 mg) can remove 80.6% uranyl ions from 5 L seawater after 50 filtering cycles. This study provides a universal method to design and fabricate a new MOF-based adsorbent for high-efficient uranium recovery from seawater.

Abstract:Differential thresholds for rate of photic intermittence were measured for 10 interruption rates between 2.5 and 32.5 interruptions per second, five luminance levels, and five visual angles in the central retina of the human eye. The differential threshold was found to increase as a function of interruption rate to a maximum at 15.0 interruptions per sec for low levels of luminance and 22.5 interruptions per sec for high levels of luminance, following which it decreased throughout the range of interruption rates investigated. A slight but consistent decrease in differential threshold was associated with an increase in the size of the stimulus from 0.73° to 2.83°. Further size increases yielded no measurable gains.

Abstract:Uranium is a critical resource in the development of nuclear energy, and its extraction from natural seawater has been identified as a potential solution to address uranium resource shortages. In this study, hierarchical meso-/micro- porous metal-organic framework functionalized with phytic acid (PA) microspheres (denoted H-UiO-66-PA) are rationally synthesized for efficient uranium extraction. This unique design allowed for a large adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics, making it a promising material for uranium extraction. Due to the hierarchically porous structure, H-UiO-66-NH2 materials not only provide more sites for grafting PA, and thus enhance the adsorption capacity, but also facilitate the rapid diffusion of uranyl ions which can quickly and effectively access the interior of the H-UiO-66-PA adsorbent. Therefore, the obtained H-UiO-66-PA can achieve an impressive absorption efficiency of 6.76 mg g-1 in actual seawater within 15 days. Meanwhile, the H-UiO-66-PA possesses a good adsorption capacity for uranyl ions in the five adsorption/desorption cycles. This work proposes a feasible strategy for constructing functional hierarchical porous MOFs for uranium removal.

Abstract:Uranium is an important fuel for nuclear power, with 4.5 billion tons of it stored in the oceans, 1,000 times more than on land. Polymer membrane materials are widely used in the marine resources fields, due to their convenient collection, good separation and can work continuously. Herein, a poly(amidoxime)-polyacrylonitrile blend membrane (PCP) with high flux, excellent antibacterial properties and uranium adsorption performance has been prepared by using the phase inversion method, and the prepared membrane was used for highly efficient uranium extraction from seawater. In static adsorption experiments, the PCP membrane reached adsorption equilibrium after 48 h, and the adsorption capacity was 303.89 mg/g (C0 =50 mg/L). In dynamic adsorption experiments, it was found that the lower flow rate and higher number of membrane layers were favorable for dynamic adsorption. In addition, the water flux of the PCP membrane was 7.4 times higher than that of the PAN membrane. The adsorption mechanism can be attributed to the chelation between amino and hydroxyl groups in CS, amidoxime group in poly(amidoxime) and uranyl ions. The simple preparation process coupled with the excellent adsorption performance indicated that the PCP membrane would be a promising material for the uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:Novel metal‐organic framework (MOF)‐based adsorption‐filtration hybrid membranes are prepared which could improve water flux and accelerate uranium extraction from water resources. The excellent uranium extraction performance is attributed to the unique membrane structure, that water flows through the channels without blocking by the substrate during filtration and the full contact of uranium with abundant exposed active sites promotes the adsorption. In this paper, novel UiO‐66‐AO‐based adsorption‐filtration hybrid membranes (UAMs) are prepared via an irradiation‐mediated growth strategy to simultaneously improve water flux and accelerate uranium extraction from water resources. The UAM shows an equilibrium adsorption that is four times faster than UiO‐66‐AO powder and an adsorption capacity that is over two times higher. UAM also achieves a record synergy of high flux and high uranium removal ratio from simulated seawater (1358.8 L m−2 h−1, 84.5%) by one‐time filtration under ambient temperature and pressure (the adsorption is 1.83 mg g−1 in 90 min). The excellent uranium extraction performance is attributed to the unique UAM structure, in which water flows through the channels of thin metal‐organic framework (MOF) film without blocking by substrate leading to the high flux during filtration, and the full contact of uranium with abundant exposed active sites promotes the adsorption. This work will be conducive to overcoming the bottleneck problems of uranium extraction from water resources.

Abstract:Uranium pollution was a key problem affecting the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Herein, a novel covalent organic frameworks (TzDva) was constructed by the irreversible imidization reaction between 2, 4, 6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine (Tz) and 2, 5-divinylterephthalal-dehyde (Dva), which were further functionalized by dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and 2-aminoethanethiol (AET) for efficient elimination of uranium(VI) from wastewater. Different spectral techniques were used to characterize the microscopic morphology and structure of all the adsorbents. The experimental results showed that the carboxyl functional groups exhibited a strong affinity for uranium(VI) than that of the amino functional groups, and the maximum extraction capacities of TzDva-COOH and TzDva-NH 2 were 139.5 and 88.3 mg.g −1 , respectively. Selectivity experiments and simulated high salinity systems displayed that the two COFs had not only strong affinity for U(VI), but also powerful salt resistance. Meanwhile, the two COFs materials also exhibited good stability and high reusability after three adsorption–desorption cycles. Besides, spectroscopic analyses and DFT calculation demonstrated that the main adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic interactions, chelation and surface complexation. Thus, this work served as a good guideline for fabricate a novel COFs based materials to treat uranium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:A stable supply of uranium resources is essential to the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Extraction of uranium from seawater or uranium-containing wastewater with abundant uranium reserves has attracted much attention. Here, a polydopamine-functionalized polyamidoxime membranes ( membranes) were fabricated via nonsolvent induce phase separation method coupling with polymerization deposition process of dopamine and further applied to capture U(VI) from solution. The membranes exhibited impressive adsorption capacity and convenient separation from solution. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium adsorption of membranes satisfactorily fitted with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for uranium calculated according to the Langmuir model at pH 5.00 and 298 K reached at 730 mg·g -1 . Moreover, the adsorption capacity of the membranes was maintained at 212 mg·g -1 under the interference of 9 different kinds of competing ions and the removal of U(VI) all reached more than 90% in three different concentrations of uranium-spiked natural seawater, which revealed that the adsorbent possessed the promising selectivity for uranium. In addition, the membranes exhibited satisfactory reusability, and the uranium adsorption capacity and desorption rate were maintained above 96.5% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The high capacity, excellent selectivity and good reusability endow membranes as a suitable candidate for the extraction of U(VI) from actual industrial wastewater or seawater.

Abstract:Selective extraction of uranium from water has attracted worldwide attention because the largest source of uranium is seawater with various interference ions (Na+ , K+ , Mg2+ , Ca2+ , etc.). However, traditional adsorbents encapsulate most of their functional sites in their dense structure, leading to problems with low selectivity and adsorption capacities. In this work, the tailor-made binding sites are first decorated into porous skeletons, and a series of molecularly imprinted porous aromatic frameworks are prepared for uranium extraction. Because the porous architecture provides numerous accessible sites, the resultant material has a fourfold increased ion capacity compared with traditional molecularly imprinted polymers and presents the highest selectivity among all reported uranium adsorbents. Moreover, the porous framework can be dispersed into commercial polymers to form composite components for the practical extraction of uranium ions from simulated seawater.

Abstract:With the rapid industrial development and growing environmental awareness, the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater and wastewater has emerged as a research hotspot in nuclear energy development. Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are widely used for uranium extraction, their low stability and poor selectivity hinder further development. Herein, a novel phosphorylurea functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with optimized pore structure and hydrophilicity is fabricated (DUT-5-POR) by in situ induced etching strategy, which synergistically achieves the regulation of structural and coordination microenvironment. The presence of mesoporous pores can accelerate ion transport and expose abundant adsorption sites to enhance the adsorption capacity of uranium. Meanwhile, the introduction of phosphorylurea groups optimizes the hydrophilicity microenvironment and surface group density of DUT-5-POR to improve selectivity and kinetics. Consequently, DUT-5-POR shows an excellent adsorption ability (Q m = 263.4 mg⋅g −1 ) at pH = 6 and high selectivity for various competing metal ions, particularly in the separation of uranium and vanadium. Moreover, this work provides a feasible strategy for adjusting the structure and the coordination microenvironment of MOFs and a comprehensive perspective on the adsorption of uranium by MOF-based materials.

Abstract:Design and construction of a membrane that can achieve selective separation of uranium from spent fuel or seawater is a big challenge in the field of separation science. In this work, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) and three different nitrates (Zn/Ni/Cu) were used to prepare metal-organic frameworks (BTC-MOFs) with different pore sizes, and then, BTC-MOFs were intercalated into the interlayers of graphene oxide (GO) for preparing the composite membranes which presented selective separation of uranium with strong acid resistance. Composite membranes prepared by Zn/Ni/Cu-BTC-MOFs and GO can achieve the separation between ions of different valence states, and their permeability and selectivity depend on the membrane thickness, the acidity of driving solution, and the pore sizes of MOFs. Importantly, Cu-BTC-MOF-intercalated GO membranes can not only achieve the selective separation of Th4+ and UO22+ with a selectivity of ≈6 but also induce the ultra-high selectively separation of UO22+ and Ce3+ because the rejection rate of Ce3+ is about 100%. Moreover, the Zn-BTC-MOF-intercalated GO membrane shows an excellent selectivity of Th4+ and UO22+ with a selectivity of ≈25, and it may also achieve selective separation of uranium from seawater.

Abstract:The presence of radioactive U(VI) ions in sewage poses a significant threat to both the ecological environment and human health. In recent years, an electricity-driven remediation strategy has emerged as a prominent technique for the elimination of radionuclides. Specifically, the square wave transformation method is an emerging technology for electrochemical separation and enrichment of uranium. It offers several merits, such as high extraction capacity, facile recovery of products, and effective suppression of water decomposition. However, conventional electrodes typically require the utilization of adhesives, which severely restricts their adsorption performance. In this study, we fabricated a self-supporting membrane electrode based on amidoximefunctionalized Ti3C2Tx MXene (TCP) for efficient extraction of uranium from radioactive solutions. The polyamidoxime (PAO) is incorporated into the interlayer of Ti3C2Tx through non-covalent bonds, leading to an increase in interlayer spacing and specific surface area while also providing an abundance of specific binding sites. Notably, by applying an alternating current (AC) voltage ranging from-5 to 0 V, uranyl ions can migrate and concentrate onto TCP membrane, achieving an exceptional extraction capacity of 2809 mg/g. Further characterization confirmed that the captured uranium(VI) was reduced to U(V), and then the unstable U(V) was re- oxidized to U(VI), eventually generating Na2O7U22 precipitates in the presence of Na+. Considering its remarkable electro-extraction performance and convenient preparation process, the TCP membrane electrode is regarded as a promising candidate for U(VI) extraction from wastewater.

Abstract:Summary The weight losses of the ticks, irrespective of their age or sex, increased equally in both R. evertsi subspecies only slightly till a temperature of 50°C was reached. All ticks survived being exposed to this temperature for 60 minutes. At temperature levels greater than 50°C, the weight losses increased continuously and to a much greater degree, proportionate to the exposure period. These temperatures caused the death of all live ticks exposed to them for 60 minutes. Therefore, the critical transition temperature of live and dead, unfed male and female R. evertsi evertsi and R. evertsi mimeticus ticks is to be established in the range from 50°C to 52°C. Zusammenfassung Zur kritischen Transitionstemperatur nuchterner adulter Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi und Rhipicephalus evertsi mimeticus (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae) Die Gewichtsverluste nuchterner weiblicher und mannlicher Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi und Rhipicephalus evertsi mimeticus nahmen, unabhangig von Alter und Geschlecht und in beiden Unterarten ubereinstimmend, bis zu einer Temperatur von 50°C nur geringfugig zu, gleichzeitig uberlebten alle Zecken selbst 60minutige Expositionen. Ab Temperaturen von 50°C, die alle lebend in den Versuch eingebrachten Zecken nach 60minutiger Exposition abtoteten, stiegen die Gewichtsverluste kontinuierlich und steil an und dabei proportional zur Expositionsdauer. Dementsprechend ist die kritische Transitionstemperatur sowohl bei lebend untersuchten als auch bei vor Versuchsbeginn abgetoteten nuchternen mannlichen und weiblichen Zecken von R. evertsi evertsi und R. evertsi mimeticus im Bereich von 50°C bis 52°C anzusetzen.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater provides the new idea for the development of uranium resources. However, the concentration of uranium in seawater is extremely low (∼3.3 μg/L). Meanwhile, there are a large number of competing ions and microorganisms in the seawater. It is a huge challenge to extract uranium from seawater. In this paper, a double network hydrogels material with effective antifouling ability was prepared for highly efficient uranium sorption. First, poly(hexamethylene biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) modified graphene oxide(GO) was prepared (PHMB-GO), and then PHMB-GO was doped into the double network hydrogels structure formed by acrylamide and gelatin in order to obtain (GO-PHMB)0.4@Gelatin-PAM, which showed the maximum uranium adsorption capacity reached 625.00 mg∙g−1. More importantly, it exhibited excellent selectivity towards uranium(VI) in the presence of multiple coexisting metal ions in simulated seawater. The Kd value for uranium is 1.73 × 104 mL∙g−1, which is far more than other metal ions. The antibacterial and antialgae experiments prove that the adsorption material has a good inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli (E. coli), vibrio vulnificus (V vulnificus) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, (GO-PHMB)0.4@Gelatin-PAM is an outstanding candidate for efficient uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract:In the push to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, nuclear power will play an essential role alongside renewable wind and solar power, and correspondingly global interest and investment in this well-established technology is accelerating. The uranium present in seawater could support nuclear power generation for centuries, but traditional adsorptive separation strategies have proven ineffective for the selective extraction of uranium from this vast resource. Here, we report the synthesis of nanowires of a triazine-linked two-dimensional covalent organic framework via a solvent modulation approach, which can be used to access nanowire external diameters ranging from 50 to 200 nm. The 100 nm nanowires are exceptionally promising for the capture of uranium(VI) via photocatalytic reduction. Under simulated sunlight and without the use of sacrificial agents, the nanowires achieve a uranium uptake of 10.9 g/g from a 100 ppm uranyl(VI) solution, which is the highest reported to date among materials studied for photo and electrocatalytic uranium capture. Significantly, these nanowires exhibit a uranium adsorption capacity of 34.5 mg/g after exposure to seawater under irradiation for 42 days, a record among all materials reported to date for uranium capture.

Abstract:Efficient capture uranium from seawater/wastewater is important to not only supply raw material for nuclear energy but also avert the environmental threat from uranium-containing solutions. It is of great significance to design highly efficient adsorbents with stability and recyclability. Herein, the acid-tolerant nanofibrous adsorbent was synthesized by a combination of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) co-electrospinning, crosslink treatment, acrylonitrile grafting and amidoximation. The resultant CS/PVA-AO nanofibers exhibited the maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 714 mg g−1, larger than that of CS based sorbents. The CS/PVA-AO nanofibers demonstrated reliable stability in acid conditions as well as in adsorption–desorption cycling. The model fitting investigation showed that the uranium adsorbed on CS/PVA-AO nanofibers by the Langmuir adsorption model with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This research provides a more efficient and convenient option for uranium recovery from seawater/wastewater.

Abstract:The efficient extraction of uranium, as the primary component of nuclear energy, holds significant implications. Drawing inspiration from the charge interaction observed in biological ion channels, we encapsulated negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) or sodium polystyrene carboxylate (PVBA) into the nanochannels of amidoxime functionalized covalent organic framework (COF-AO) in-situ to alter the cavity environment of COF-AO. The synthesized COF-AO-PSS and COF-AO-PVBA are used for ultra-fast and highly selective uranium recovery. The negatively charged PSS/PVBA was confined in the COF-AO channel providing the driving force for uranium transport and blocking other ions, thus creating a highly selective "uranium highway". Additionally, introducing sulfonate groups or carboxyl groups into COF-AO offers supplementary coordination environments and weak interactions with uranium. Due to charge-assisted migration and various interaction mechanisms, both COF-AO-PSS and COF-AO-PVBA exhibit faster adsorption kinetics and higher selectivity compared to COF-AO alone. Their adsorption capacities are 3.8 times and 2.4 times that of COF-AO alone respectively which highlights the necessity for constructing biomimetic ion channels in uranium adsorption processes. This work presents a bionic adsorbent based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for the first time, overcoming environmental and equipment limitations associated with traditional photocatalysis and electrocatalysis methods for uranium capture, opening up new avenues for designing multifunctional materials that mimic biological systems.

Abstract:Electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater provides a new opportunity for a sustainable supply of nuclear fuel. However, there is still room for studying flexible electrode materials in this field. Herein, we construct amidoxime group modified porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-144-AO) on flexible carbon cloths in situ using an easy to scale-up electropolymerization method followed by postdecoration to fabricate the self-standing, binder-free, metal-free electrodes (PAF-E). Based on the architectural design, adsorption sites (amidoxime groups) and catalytic sites (carbazole groups) are integrated into PAF-144-AO. Under the action of an alternating electric field, uranyl ions are selectively captured by PAN-E and subsequently transformed into Na2O(UO3·H2O)x precipitates in the presence of Na+ via reversible electron transfer, with an extraction capacity of 12.6 mg g-1 over 24 days from natural seawater. This adsorption-electrocatalysis mechanism is also demonstrated at the molecular level by ex situ spectroscopy. Our work offers an effective approach to designing flexible porous organic polymer electrodes, which hold great potential in the field of electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater.
