Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:The practical application of carbon materials supported cobalt (Co)-based heterogeneous materials as excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators has attracted wide attention in recent years because of their low particle self-agglomeration and low Co leaching. Herein, we developed a new synthetic strategy for designing Co nanoparticles (Co NPs)-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8-derived porous carbon (NC) (denoted as Co-N@NC-x) by calcinating NC with a polydopamine-chelating Co coating. It was demonstrated that NC could effectively prevent Co agglomeration because it provided rich load sites for Co. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the addition of Co could increase the surface defects of NC. Co-N@NC-90 (0.1 g/L) efficiently catalyzed PMS to degrade >96.91 % of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 20 mg/L) within 90 min with an initial pH of 3.65–9.05 based on the synergistic effect between Co NPs and NC. It was demonstrated that Co NPs were the main active sites, and the defects and carbonyl (CO) group active sites also contributed to SMX degradation by catalyzing PMS. Graphitic N was an adsorption site for SMX. A singlet oxygen (1O2)-dominated non-radical mechanism has been proposed. Additionally, Co-N@NC-90 exhibited excellent stability resulting from NC encapsulation. This work provides a novel approach for the application of metal organic framework-derived carbon-supported metal catalysts in wastewater purification.

Abstract:Recently, peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process has been widely applied in the removal of refractory organic pollutants. In the present study, cobalt-doped graphene aerogel (Co-GA) composites have been fabricated as a promising activator for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) via in-situ synthesis successfully. The physical-chemical properties of composite catalysts were carefully characterized and the activation performance was evaluated by the degradation of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfanilamide (SN) and rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution, respectively. The results showed that Co-GA could effectively degrade refractory organics and keep macroscopic morphology intact under the reaction conditions of 15 mg/L simulated wastewater, 0.3 g/L PMS, 0.2 g/L Co-GA. Furthermore, the effect of reaction parameters on SMM degradation was investigated. Co-GA/PMS system exhibited consistent performance over a wide pH range (3-11). The degradation mechanism of SMM is free radical oxidation dominated by sulfate radical (SO4•−) combined with non-radical reaction initiated by GA. Benefiting from its flexibility and recyclability, the as-prepared Co-GA is suitable for practical wastewater purification.

Abstract:The efficient activation and selective high-valent metal-oxo (HVMO) species generation remain challenging for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) in water purification. The underlying mechanism of the activation pathway is ambiguous, leading to a massive dilemma in the control and regulation of HVMO species generation. Herein, bioinspired by the bio-oxidase structure of cytochrome P450, the axial coordination strategy was adopted to tailor a single-atom cobalt catalyst (CoN4S-CB) with an axial S coordination. CoN4S-CB high-selectively generated high-valent Co-Oxo species (Co(IV)=O) via PMS activation. Co(IV)=O demonstrated an ingenious oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reaction to achieve the efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and this allowed robust operation in various complex environments. The axial S coordination modulated the 3d orbital electron distribution of the Co atom. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the axial S coordination decreased the energy barrier for PMS desorption and lowered the free energy change (ΔG) for Co(IV)=O generation. CoN4S-PMS* had a narrow d-band close to the Fermi level, which enhanced charge transfer to accelerate the cleavage of O-O and O-H bonds in PMS. This work provides a broader perspective on the activator design with natural enzyme structure-like active sites to efficient activate PMS for selective HVMO species generation.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate(PMS)-based advanced oxidation technologies have rapidly evolved in the past few years with cobalt being one of the most powerful PMS activators, demonstrating considerable potential in environmental pollution control. Using water-soluble sulfonated cobalt(II) phthalocyanine as the precursor, a graphene-based catalyst with a three-dimensional macrostructure containing Co(II) and Co(III) was created through simple freeze-drying and high-temperature calcination herein. The multivalent cobalt effectively improved the reaction rate of material activation PMS to degrade SMX, and the presence of the sp2-hybridized carbon lattice accelerated the electron-transfer rate. Through quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance, it was demonstrated that high-valent cobalt-oxo species [Co(IV) = O] were the primary active components of the reaction system, and that the cobalt–nitrogen active components and N vacancy structure in the material were conducive to the formation of high-valent Co(IV) = O species and 1O2. Furthermore, after reusing the manufactured materials 10 times, the reaction system was still able to remove SMX efficiently, allowing for the practical implementation of PMS advanced oxidation technology. Thus, the current study considerably contributes to the investigation of the PMS reaction mechanism of multivalent cobalt-doped graphene catalytic materials.

Abstract:Although single-atom catalysts are pioneers in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, selection of substrates and enhanced binding remains ambiguous. Here, a novel highly dispersed cobalt single-atom loaded 2-methylimidazole (MeIm) ligand-modified carbon nitride catalyst (Co-MCAMeIm) was prepared by a molecular self-assembly strategy. The densely distributed SA-Co with Co-N sites were corroborated by HAADF-STEM and XAFS analysis. The strong chelation of pre-dispersed ligands and triazine ring of g-C3N4 confers higher stability to the catalyst, reducing Co leaching. Meanwhile, the g-C3N4 substrate offers additional adsorption sites to shorten the reaction distance. The embedded Co-N functions as an electron donor capable of bridging N-rich carbon networks, hence accelerating the electron transport. Experimental findings demonstrated that sulfamethoxazole (SMX) could be effectively cleared through Co-MCAMeIm/PMS process (99.1%, 0.13 min−1). Several key influencing factors like Co to MeIm molar ratio, PMS concentration, Co-MCAMeIm dosage, pH value, anions, and humic acid were examined. The catalytic pathway is dominated by the activation of PMS with SA-Co-N as active sites to form 1O2. Meanwhile, a multi-ROS process with occurrence of SO 4 • - , O 2 • - and •OH was confirmed. Additionally, the SMX degradation routes and toxicity variations were derived and analyzed. Herein, the research may provide new insights for stable single-atom catalyst towards water treatment.

Abstract:Simultaneous regulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and engineering architectures with efficient exposed active sites are efficient strategies for boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We isolated cobalt atoms with dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination (Co-N3O1) on oxygen-doped tubular carbon nitride (TCN) by pyrolyzing a hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid melamine-cobalt acetate precursor. The theoretically constructed Co-N3O1 moiety on TCN exhibited an impressive mass activity of 7.61x10(5) min(-1) mol(-1) with high O-1(2) selectivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cobalt single atoms occupied a dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination environment, and that PMS adsorption was promoted and energy barriers reduced for the key *O intermediate that produced O-1(2). The catalysts were attached to a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane to deliver an antibiotic wastewater treatment system with 97.5 % ciprofloxacin rejection over 10 hours, thereby revealing the suitability of the membrane for industrial applications.

Abstract:Cobalt (Co) and oxides are the most common catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). However, practical applications of Co-based PMS-advanced oxidation processes are difficult to realize the degradation of the targeted pollutants due to poor yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inaccessible active sites. Here, we designed 3D oxygen vacancy-rich (V o -rich) variable Co foam (Co x O y @CF) via coupling solvent-free and pyrolysis strategies for degrading tetracycline by PMS activation. The kinetic rate of optimized () Co x O y @CF-1.0 (1.0 presented the molar ratio of Co 2+ and 2-methylimidazole) enhanced by an order of magnitude compared to that of ZIFs derivatives (ZIFs-500) (0.073 vs 0.155 min −1 ) due to the special structure. The flow-through unit maintained over 90% removal within 12 h, which was far better than that of ZIFs-500/PMS system. We used electrochemical analysis, quenching experiment, in-situ FTIR and Raman spectra to further investigate the possible mechanism of the 3D Co x O y @CF-1.0/PMS system. 3D Co x O y @CF-1.0 stimulated the production of the metastable catalyst-PMS* complex obtained O 2 − as intermediates accompanied by the redox cycling of Co 2+ /Co 3+ , which created the dominant ROS (more 1 O 2 ) in the presence of V o , which was completely different for ZIFs-500/PMS with coordinated and dominant radical and non-radical pathways. This study could large-scale generate variable cobalt-based catalysts for enhanced ROS generation, leading the new insight for boosting practical applications.

Abstract:Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the USA and worldwide, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. A genetic factor for the development of DN is strongly implicated, as only one third of diabetic patients eventually develop kidney disease. Growing evidence also supports an important role of epigenetic modifications in DN. Summary: Multiple studies have been performed to identify risk genes and loci associated with DN. So far, only several genes and loci have been identified, none of which showed a strong association with DN. Therefore, a better study design with a larger sample size to identify rare variants and a clinically defined patient population to identify genes and loci associated with progressive DN are still needed. In addition to genetic factors, epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications and microRNAs, also play a major role in the pathogenesis of DN through a second layer of gene regulation. Although a major progress has been made in this field, epigenetic studies in DN are still in the early phase and have been limited mostly due to the heterogeneity of kidney tissue samples with multiple cells. However, rapid development of high-throughput genome-wide techniques will help us to better identify genetic variants and epigenetic changes in DN. Key Message: Understanding of genetic and epigenetic changes in DN is needed for the development of new biomarkers and better drug targets against DN. Summarized in this review are important recent findings on genetic and epigenetic studies in the field of DN.

Abstract:Immobilizing metal-organic frameworks in macro-supports to form three-dimensional catalysts holds a great promise in environmental remediation, however quantitative structure/property-catalytic activity relationship remains unknown currently. In this work, we constructed Co2AlO4/CoAl2O4@Al2O3 monoliths derived from ZIF-67@γ-Al2O3 pellets and systematically investigated their surface chemistry-activity relationships in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for organic degradation. The activities of Co2AlO4/CoAl2O4@Al2O3 catalysts were selectively correlated with their ratios of Co3+/Co2+ and ODefect/OLattice. The optimized Co2AlO4/CoAl2O4@Al2O3 demonstrated an excellent catalytic efficacy toward PMS activation for metronidazole removal in a wide pH range (3.29–10.26) and OH was the dominant oxidant for metronidazole oxidation. The catalyst also exhibited desirable performance for eliminating other emerging contaminants and enduring catalytic activity and stability in PMS activation without regeneration. This study provides new prospects in rational design of robust, cost-effective and self-cleaning/repairing three-dimensional Co-based macroscale-catalysts with an outstanding and lasting catalytic activity for water purification.

Abstract:It is of great significance to regulate rationally the activation mechanism of persulfate for promoting the development of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes in wastewater treatment. Herein, carbon coated porous Co3O4 with hollow structure was synthesized. Notably, the formation of porous hollow structure improved specific surface area of Co3O4 and offered more redox couples of Co2+/Co3+, thereby reducing electron transfer resistance. Thus, the generation of reactive oxygen species and the role of high-valent transition metal complexes (namely Co3O4Co4+) were improved. The formation of carbon layer on the Co3O4 surface can avoid the release of Co ion during reaction process. Benefiting from the role of carbon layer in electron transport, catalyst-mediated the direct electron transfer from pollutant to PMS was boosted. Radical and nonradical pathways worked in coordination each other and realized the rapid removal of various organic pollutants in the presence of a little PMS. In short, current work revealed that modulating rationally the microstructure of catalyst was an efficient strategy for achieving controllable regulation of PMS activation process. More significantly, whether the direct electron transfer process can occur or not depended on both catalyst structure and electronic density of pollutants.
Cation−π structure inducing efficient peroxymonosulfate activation for pollutant degradation over atomically dispersed cobalt bonding graphene-like nanospheres

Abstract:Orbital interaction involving metal cation−π is an important form for electron transfer regulation. To accelerate the interfacial electron transfer of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for water treatment, we report a new strategy through bonding atomically dispersed cobalt with nanospheric C-based graphene-like structures (SACo-NGs) to form metal cation−π structure, driving rapid and directional transfer of the electrons of pollutants to PMS on the catalyst surface. The catalyst SACo-NGs is synthesized by an enhanced hydrothermal-sintering method and the formation of metal cation−π structure is demonstrated by X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that Co−π structures (Co2+-N-Cπ) play a key role for the efficient activation of PMS, which results in pollutants being greatly removed in a few minutes. During the reaction, pollutants can donate electrons for the system through π−π interaction accompanying by the direct oxidative degradation of pollutants. The obtained electrons are quickly transferred to the atomically dispersed cobalt sites through the formed cation−π structure, which promotes the activation of PMS. This is a successful practice in the field of PMS activation using cation−π structure to accelerate electron transfer and achieve rapid degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:A newly developed sulfonated covalent organic frameworks anchoring cobalt as high‐efficient and stable catalysts for peroxymonosulfate activation is proposed. In this catalyst, the sulfonic acid groups play dual roles, which nicely address the leaching, aggregation, and low utilization problems of active cobalt ions. Heterogeneous cobalt‐based catalysts are highly effective in activing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and produce free radicals to deal with recalcitrant organic pollutants in water. However, unfeasible recyclability and gradual performance degradation remain challenging due to the easy agglomeration and leaching of active cobalt species. Herein, a strategy is proposed to construct stably anchored and highly dispersed Co2+ sites on dual functional sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COF‐Co). The sulfonic acid groups are able to realize the targeted binding with cobalt ions through a two‐step cation‐exchange method, leading to strong combination with active Co2+ sites and utmost utilization efficiencies. Moreover, the super‐hydrophility of sulfonic acid groups favors the rapid accessibility of organic molecules to the catalyst and accelerates the degradation. Remarkably, COF‐Co exhibits high activity in PMS activation, effective oxidation for tetracycline degradation (92% within 30 min at 30 mg L−1) and other coloring contaminants, and excellent recycle stability. This work can guide the rational design of efficient and environmentally friendly PMS‐activated catalyst with great potential for application in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The understanding of how single atoms anchoring on oxides contribute to high-activity catalysis in the sulfate radical-advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) remains obscure. Here we presented a new strategy for regulating singlet oxygen (1O2) generation in peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) by engineering the Co-O-X active sites on oxide supports in this study. The Co single atoms supported on mesoporous oxides (CoSA-XO2) were first successfully developed using a modified sol–gel solvent vaporization self-assembly method. We found that CoSA-XO2 catalysts served as efficient PMS activators for pollutant decomposition over a wide pH range. Notably, CoSA-TiO2 exhibited exceptional performance, achieving nearly 100% removal of sulfasalazine (SSZ) within 10 min. Furthermore, evidenced by experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, 1O2 was confirmed to be predominately active oxidizing species by the unique Co-O-X bonds for activating PMS in CoSA-XO2/PMS system, resulting in an excellent pollution degradation. This study provides valuable insights into the construction of highly loaded single-atom catalysts using oxide substrates in the PMS-AOP system, along with the mechanism of regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation through interfacial bonding between active metal and support.

The formation of carbon layer on the Co 3 O 4 surface can avoid the release of Co ion during reaction process. Benefiting from the role of carbon layer in electron transport, catalyst-mediated the direct electron transfer from pollutant to PMS was boosted. Radical and nonradical pathways worked in coordination each other and realized the rapid removal of various organic pollutants in the presence of a little PMS. In short, current work revealed that modulating rationally the microstructure of catalyst was an efficient strategy for achieving controllable regulation of PMS activation process. More significantly, whether the direct electron transfer process can occur or not depended on both catalyst structure and electronic density of pollutants.

Abstract:Enhancing the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is essential for generating more reactive oxygen species in advanced oxidation process (AOPs). Nevertheless, improving PMS adsorption and expediting interfacial electron transfer to enhance reaction kinetics pose significant challenges. Herein, we construct confined W18O49 nanowires with asymmetric active centers containing Co-Vo-W (Vo: oxygen vacancy). The design incorporates surface-rich Vo and single-atom Co, and the resulting material is employed for PMS activation in water purification. By coupling unsaturated coordinated electrons in Vo with low-valence Co single atoms to construct an the "electron fountainhead", the adsorption and activation of PMS are enhanced. This results in the generation of more active free radicals (SO4•-, •OH, •O2-) and non-free radicals (1O2) for the decomposition of micropollutants. Thereinto, the degradation rate of bisphenol A (BPA) by Co-W18O49 is 32.6 times faster that of W18O49 monomer, which is also much higher than those of other transition-metal-doped W18O49 composites. This work is expected to help to elucidate the rational design and efficient PMS activation of catalysts with asymmetric active centers.

Abstract:The effective, stable, and secure catalysts are essential for sulfate radical (SO 4 ·− )-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) to the degradation of organic contaminants in water. Heterogeneous supported cobalt-based catalysts are commonly used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to achieve the degradation. In this work, we synthesized Co 3 O 4 @Al 2 O 3 three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous nanocomposite (denoted as Co 3 O 4 @Al 2 O 3 3DPNC) in just one step by calcining cheap and green deep eutectic solvent (DES) solution containing Co salt. Co 3 O 4 @Al 2 O 3 3DPNC with the high specific surface area (93.246 m 2 /g), uniform pore distribution (3.829 nm) and rich porosity (0.255 cm 3 /g) were attained in a beautiful hierarchical structure which exhibited the open 3D propeller-like microstructure, two-dimensional lamellar substructure with rich folds, as well as the decoration of highly dispersed Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles on mesoporous amorphous Al 2 O 3 . The excellent chemical and thermal stability of Al 2 O 3 ensures the high stability of the catalyst, and the formation of the complex hierarchical structure makes the active Co 3 O 4 be homogenously dispersed for effective catalysis. The catalyst demonstrated outstanding performance for catalytic degradations of organic pollutants (acetaminophen, oxytetracycline, 5-sulfosalicylic acid, orange G and Rhodamine B) by generated SO 4 ·− , ·OH and 1 O 2 . With a very low cobalt content (equal to 28.2 mg/L of Co), the catalyst exhibited very high stability and excellent reusability in the recycling usages, while the leaching of the cobalt element (< 0.145 mg/L) was also at a low level. Our catalyst achieved effective degradations of acetaminophen in cycles without losing its stable hierarchical nanostructure.

Abstract:In Fenton-like reactions, high-valent cobalt-oxo (CoIV=O) has attracted increasing interests due to high redox potential, long lifetime, and anti-interference properties, but its generation is hindered by the electron repulsion between the electron rich oxo- and cobalt centers. Here, we demonstrate CoIV=O generation from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation over cobalt single-atom catalysts (Co-SACs) using in-situ Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, and discern that CoIV=O generation is dependent on the support work-function (WF) due to the strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). Supports with a high WF value like anatase-TiO2 facilitate the binding of PMS-terminal oxo-ligand to Co sites by extracting Co-d electrons, thus decreasing the generation barrier for the critical intermediate (Co-OOSO32-). The Co atoms anchored on anatase-TiO2 (Co-TiO2) exhibited enhanced CoIV=O generation and superior activity for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation during PMS activation. The normalized steady-state concentration of CoIV=O in Co-TiO2/PMS system was three orders of magnitude higher than that of free radicals, and 1.3- to 11-fold higher than that generated in other Co-SACs/PMS systems. Co-TiO2/PMS sustained efficient removal of SMX with minimal Co2+ leaching under continuous flow operation, suggesting its attractive water purification potential. Overall, these results underscore the significance of support selection for enhanced generation of high-valent metal-oxo species and efficient PMS activation in supported metal SACs.

Abstract:Cobalt-based materials were considered as promising catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, while few reactive sites and ion leaching limit its environmental application. Herein, Co(OH)2 nanosheets in-situ anchored hydroxylated hollow tubular g-C3N4 (Co/CNH) was successfully fabricated by a facile impregnation method, and used to activate PMS for enrofloxacin hydrochloride (ERF) degradation. Compared with neat Co(OH)2 and CNH, the optimum catalyst (10 %Co/CNH) exhibited higher ERF degradation efficiency for 95.6 % within 30 min. The enhanced performance was attributed to the synergistic effect between Co(OH)2 and CNH. CNH can not only provide numerous nucleation sites for Co(OH)2 to inhibit its agglomeration, but also provide abundant OH− for formation of the key PMS activation species CoOH+. Furthermore, DFT-based electron density difference elucidated that the sp3 hybridization introduced by OH− greatly facilitated charge transfer from 10 %Co/CNH to PMS. A series of characterization verified that 1O2 dominated the degradation of ERF (nonradical pathway), SO4•− and •OH (radical pathway) as well as electron transfer also contributed to this process. Fukui index (f−) and bond degree (BD) indicated that reactive oxygen species tend to attack atoms with higher f− and scavenge covalent bonds with larger BD in the process of ERF degradation.

Radiation-induced Preparation of Nanoscale CoO@graphene Oxide for Activating Peroxymonosulfate to Degrade Emerging Organic Pollutants

Abstract:In this study, ionizing radiation was used to induce the in-situ formation of highly dispersed nanosized cobalt oxide on the surface of graphene oxide (R-Co-GO), which was highly effective for activating PMS to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). R-Co-GO had the highest catalytic activity when 150 mu L cobalt chloride hexahydrate solution was used in the precursor, and the pseudo first-order kinetic constant of SMX degradation was 0.07 min(-1) with high mineralization efficiency (63.1 %) and high PMS utilization efficiency. The sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt oxo were mainly responsible for SMX degradation. Mechanism analysis showed that cobalt active site dominated in PMS activation, which was responsible for the formation of sulfate radicals and highvalent cobalt oxo; while the carbon framework contributed to the formation of singlet oxygen. The R-Co-GO-50 had good catalytic activity and stability in five cycling experiments, in which SMX was completely degraded and the concentration of dissolved Co was below 0.1 mg/L. In addition, the R-Co-GO-150/PMS system could also degrade phenol, bisphenol A, atrazine and nitrobenzene effectively, confirming its wide applicability. This study provided a facile method to uniformly disperse the metal oxides on the surface of carbon materials, and an effective system for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from the actual wastewater.
