Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered as an emerging threat to soil fauna. However, how TWP toxicity to soil fauna responds to the stress of soil moisture and temperature remains unclear. We assessed the toxicity of environmentally relevant TWPs to the soil model species Enchytraeus crypticus under three soil moisture and two temperature gradients. Typical thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) was selected for comparison. Results showed that compared with PP, TWPs exerted stronger toxicity, including decreasing the worm growth, survival and reproduction rates, disturbing the soil and worm gut microbiota, and leaching more diverse and higher contents of additives. Stress of soil moisture and temperature exacerbated TWP toxicity mainly through affecting the leaching and transformation of additives. Fourteen mediated additives significantly contributed to the shift of the gut microbiota under soil moisture and temperature stress, among which 1,3-diphenylguanidine, N,N'-bis(methylphenyl)-1,4-benzenediamine quinone, N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide, and 2-aminobenzothiazole were identified as the main drivers. In addition, this study provided the first clear evidence that increased soil moisture and temperature promoted the transformation of additives in the soil. Our study revealed the non-negligible aggravated toxicity of TWPs to soil fauna under stress of soil moisture and temperature, providing novel insights into the environmental behavior of additives.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs), common mixed particulate emerging contaminants in the environment, have global per capita emissions accounting for 0.23-1.9 kg/year, attracting global attention recently due to their wide detection, small size, mobility, and high toxicity. This review focuses on the occurrence characteristics of TWPs in multiple environmental media, adverse effects on organisms, potential toxicity mechanisms, and environmental risk prevention and control strategies of TWPs. The environmental fate of TWPs throughout the entire process is systematically investigated by the bibliometric analysis function of CiteSpace. This review supplements the gap in the joint toxicity and related toxicity mechanisms of TWPs with other environmental pollutants. Based on the risks review of TWPs and their additives, adverse impacts have been found in organisms from aquatic environments, soil, and humans, such as the growth inhibition effect on Chironomus dilutes. A multi-faceted and rationalized prevention and control treatment of "source-process-end" for the whole process can be achieved by regulating the use of studded tires, improving the tire additive formula, growing plants roadside, encouraging micro-degradation, and other methods, which are first reviewed. By addressing the current knowledge gaps and exploring prospects, this study contributes to developing strategies for reducing risks and assessing the fate of TWPs in multiple environmental media.

Abstract:In 2006, the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) collaborated to develop an interdisciplinary palliative training program for health professionals in the Indian health system. Their goal was to improve clinician knowledge and skills in palliative care, to train future trainers, and to increase access to palliative care for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The combined program of participant self-study utilizing a multimedia CD-ROM and train-the-trainer seminars followed the curriculum entitled Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Oncology (EPEC™-O) with American Indian and Alaska Native Cultural Considerations. Three seminars trained 89 interdisciplinary health providers from throughout the Indian health system. Evaluations demonstrated increased clinician self-reported knowledge and confidence to train and high satisfaction with training. Forty-two of 67 participants completed an anonymous post-conference Web questionnaire. Nearly half had con ducted or definitively planned palliative education sessions, and 57 percent started new palliative services at their practice sites.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered a significant contributor of microplastics (MPs) in the sludge during heavy rainfall events. Numerous studies have shown that hydrothermal treatment (HT) of sludge can accelerate the leaching of MP-derived compound into hydrothermal liquid, thus impairing the performance of subsequent anaerobic digestion and the quality of the hydrothermal liquid fertilizer. However, the leaching behavior of TWPs in the HT of sludge remains inadequately explored. This study examined the molecular composition of TWP-derived compounds and transformation pathways of representative tire-related additives under different hydrothermal temperatures using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) combined with mass difference analysis. The acute toxicity and phytotoxicity of TWP leachates were assessed using Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67 and rice hydroponics experiments. The results indicated that elevating the hydrothermal temperature not only amplified the leaching behavior of TWPs but also enhanced the chemical complexity of the TWP leachate. Utilizing both suspect and non-target screenings, a total of 144 compounds were identified as additives, including N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD), hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM), dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These additives underwent various reactions, such as desaturation, acetylation, and other reactions, leading to the formation of different transformation products (TPs). Moreover, certain additives, including caprolactam and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol, demonstrated the potential to form conjugate products with amino acids or Maillard products. Meanwhile, TWP-derived compounds showed significant acute toxicity and detrimental effects on plant growth. This study systematically investigated the environmental fate of TWPs and their derived compounds during the HT of sludge, offering novel insights into the intricate interactions between the micropollutants and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sludge.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs), abundant in the aquatic environment, pose potential ecological risks, yet their implications have not been extensively studied. Rolling friction TWPs, sliding friction TWPs (S-TWPs) and cryogenically milled tire treads were used as research objects to study the ecotoxicity and difference of the above materials before and after aging in natural water (AS-TWPs) to the periphytic biofilm. The results showed that there were significant differences in the microstructure, surface elements, size, functional groups and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) of the three TWPs. After aging in natural water, the properties of the three TWPs mentioned above showed homogenization, but the EPFRs and reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield were different. After exposure to TWPs (10 mg L −1 ), total organic carbon and adenosine triphosphate decreased significantly (p < 0.05), and the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the periphytic biofilm increased, in which the content of humic-like substance and proteins (tryptophan protein and humic acid-like substances) increased obviously. The increment of TB-EPS was higher than that of LB-EPS, and S-TWPs and AS-TWPs had the strongest promoting effect on EPS secretion. In addition, 10 mg L −1 TWPs caused massive cell death in the periphytic biofilm, which was more obvious in the S-TWPs and AS-TWPs exposure group. The toxic mechanism of TWPs promotes intracellular ROS accumulation and leads to the release of lactate dehydrogenase, which was attributed to the formation of EPFRs on the surface of TWPs and an increase in EPFRs intensity after aging in natural water. TWPs at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1 mg L −1 ) had no biological toxicity to periphytic biofilms. This study fills the gap in the study of the surface structure characteristics of TWPs on the toxicity of periphytic biofilms, and is of great significance to the study of the aquatic toxicity mechanism of TWPs.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs), which are among the microplastic pollutants in the environment, can inevitably accumulate in coastal sediments. The present study comprehensively investigated the effect of pristine TWPs on bacterial community structure in coastal sediments and compared the effect of pristine TWPs and aged TWPs on nine strains of bacteria in sediments. In addition, the effect of the TWP leachate was studied with all the nine bacterial strains and the toxicity-causing substances in the leachate was investigated using Bacillus subtilis. Exposure to TWPs could lead to a shift in bacteria community and affect nitrogen metabolism in marine sediments. Aged TWPs were more toxic than pristine TWPs due to changes in particle surface characteristics. The leachate exhibited greater toxicity than TWPs as well, and Zn was identified to be the major toxicity-causing substance. The overall results of this study are important for understanding the effects of TWPs and the leachates on microorganisms in marine sediments.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) containing tire wear chemicals (TWCs) are of global concern due to their large emissions and potential toxicity. However, TWP contributions to urban fine particles are poorly understood. Here, 72 paired gas-phase and PM2.5 samples were collected in the urban air of the Pearl River Delta, China. The concentrations of 54 compounds were determined, and 28 TWCs were detected with total concentrations of 3130-317,000 pg/m3. Most p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) were unstable in solvent, likely leading to their low detection rates. The TWCs were mainly (73 ± 26%) in the gas phase. 2-OH-benzothiazole contributed 82 ± 21% of the gas-phase TWCs and benzothiazole-2-sulfonic acid contributed 74 ± 18% of the TWCs in PM2.5. Guangzhou and Foshan were "hotspots" for atmospheric TWCs. Most TWC concentrations significantly correlated with the road length nearby. More particulate TWCs were observed than model predictions, probably due to the impacts of nonexchangeable portion and sampling artifacts. Source apportionment combined with characteristic molecular markers indicated that TWPs contributed 13 ± 7% of urban PM2.5. Our study demonstrates that TWPs are important contributors to urban air pollution that could pose risks to humans. There is an urgent need to develop strategies to decrease TWP emissions, along with broader urban air quality improvement strategies.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWP), as an emerging type of microplastics, are a significant source of contaminants in roadside soils due to their high concentration of pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study explored the impact of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and natural aging on the in vitro bioaccessibility of PAHs associated with TWP in soil on a China-wide scale. Our findings suggested that UV exposure amplified the negative charge of TWP by 75 % and increased the hydrophobic groups on the particle surface. The bioaccessibility of 3- and 4-ring PAHs in TWP was significantly (p < 0.05) heightened by UV exposure. After 20 types of soils containing 2 % UV-exposed TWP underwent natural aging, the bioaccessibility of PAHs saw a significant decrease (p < 0.05) to 16-48 %, compared to 28-96 % in the unaged group. Soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were the two primary soil properties positively influencing the reduction of in vitro PAHs concentration and PAHs bioaccessibility. According to the prediction results, soils in southern China presented the highest potential region for the release of bioaccessible PAHs from TWP, highlighting the regional specificity of environmental impact. Our study provides valuable insights into the biological impact of PAHs associated with TWP on a regional scale, and offers scientific evidence for targeted soil risk management strategies.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWP) have caused widespread contamination in the environment. However, their behavior and potential impacts in soil remain unclear since studies have so far been mainly conducted in aquatic ecosystems. It is possible that soil ecosystems are already under pressure from pollution by TWP. We here firstly synthesize knowledge about the composition, distribution, and behavior of TWP in soils. By comparing with effects of microplastics (MP) in soil, we further outline several potential impacts of TWP on soil biota and the underpinning mechanisms, and highlight the multiple pathways leading to adverse impacts of TWP on soil microbiota, soil fauna and plants. Furthermore, current knowledge about the effects of TWP is mostly based on single soil microbial species, which may underestimate the effects because of cascading consequences at the community and ecosystem levels. Therefore, more research is urgently needed to clarify the behavior and impacts of TWP from the individual organism to the Earth system level. We suggest that TWP may lead to changes in essential ecosystem services and multifunctionality, and therefore represent an emerging threat to soil health.Graphical

Differential cytotoxicity to human cells in vitro of tire wear particles emitted from typical road friction patterns: The dominant role of environmental persistent free radicals

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) have been recognized as one of the major sources of microplastics (MPs), however, effects of initial properties and photochemical behavior of TWPs on cytotoxicity to human cells in vitro have not been reported. Therefore, here, three TWPs generated from typical wear of tires and pavements (i.e., rolling friction (R-TWPs) and sliding friction (S-TWPs)) and cryogenically milled tire tread (C-TWPs), respectively, and their photoaging counterparts were used to study the reasons for their differential cytotoxicity to 16HBE cells in vitro. Results showed in addition to changes of surface structure and morphology, different preparation methods could also induce formation of different concentration levels of environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) (from 1.24 to 3.06 × 1017 spins/g with g-factors ranging 2.00307-2.00310) on surfaces of TWPs, which contained 7.3%-65.8% of reactive EPFRs (r-EPFRs). Meanwhile, photoaging for 90 d could strengthen formation of EPFRs (from 4.03 to 4.61 × 1017 spins/g) with containing 74.7%-78.1% r-EPFRs on surfaces of TWPs and improve their g-factor indexes (ranging 2.00309-2.00313). At 100 μg mL-1 level, compared to C-TWPs, both R-TWPs and S-TWPs (whether photoaging or not) carried higher intensity EPFRs could significantly inhibit 16HBE cells proliferation activity, cause more cells oxidative stress and induce more cell apoptosis/necrosis and secretion of inflammatory factor (P < 0.05). However, regardless of how TWPs were prepared, photoaged or not, exposure at a concentration of 1 μg mL-1 appeared to be non-acute cytotoxic. Correlation analysis suggested dominant toxicity of TWPs was attributed to the formation of r-EPFRs on their surfaces, which could promote accumulation of excess reactive oxygen species in cells and the massive deposition of intracellular particles. This study provides direct evidence of TWPs cytotoxicity, and underlining the need for a better understanding of the influences of initial properties and photochemical characteristics on risk assessment of TWPs released into the environment.
Risk implications induced by behaviors of artificial and pavement-generated TWPs in river water: Role of particle-self properties and incubation aging

Abstract:Here, we investigated the pristine properties of three typical tire wear particles (TWPs) and their aging properties after incubation in runoff (primary aging) and sewage (further aging), and captured the differences in the behavioral characteristics of nine TWPs in river water, with a view to paving the way for revealing the intrinsic mechanism of the hydroecological effects of TWPs. Our results highlight that the generation modes of three pristine tire wear particles (TWPs), stemming from typical tire and road wear processes—specifically, rolling friction (R-TWPs) and sliding friction (S-TWPs), alongside cryogenically milled tire treads (C-TWPs)—significantly impact their pristine physicochemical properties. This impact encompasses surface structure, particle size (D [4,3]: 8.5–121.3 μm), surface potential (−10.4 ∼ −1.8 mV), contact angle (95.2–129.8°), density (1.09–1.75 kg/m 3 ), etc., consequently, these differences significantly influence their migration capability and sorption capacity during the incubation and aging in runoff and sewage. Interestingly, after incubation and aging in the migrating aqueous phase, particularly with additional aging in sewage, not only do distinctions in the aforementioned physicochemical properties (namely, particle size (5.6–6.6 μm), surface potential (−18.4 ∼ −18.1 mV), contact angle (124.5–125.4°), density (1.05–1.16 kg/m 3 )) among various types of TWPs diminish, but the environmental behaviors (encompassing, desorption capacity, aggregation kinetics, photochemical activity—formation of persistent free radicals, and exudation—derivative (6PPD-Quinone) of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine: 6PPD) exhibited by this array of TWPs demonstrate a remarkable coherence within the downstream river water. Concerningly, the aforementioned features of aquatic system behaviors appear to be predisposed towards exacerbating the heightened toxicity of TWPs, for example, the leaching concentration of 6PPD-Q increased by two to three times after aging, aligning with established precedents regarding the toxicological causes associated with the quinone derivatives of antioxidants in rubber contaminants.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs), as predominant microplastics (MPs) in road runoff, can be captured and retained by bioretention systems (BRS). This study aimed to investigate the effect of TWPs accumulation on nitrogen processes, focusing on soil characteristics, microbial community, and functional genes. Two groups of lab-scale bioretention columns containing TWPs (0 and 100 mg g-1) were established. The removal efficiencies of NH4+-N and TN in BRS significantly decreased by 7.60%-24.79% and 1.98%-11.09%, respectively, during the 101 days of TWPs exposure. Interestingly, the emission fluxes of N2O and CO2 were significantly decreased, while the emission flux of CH4 was substantially increased. Furthermore, prolonged TWPs exposure significantly influenced the contents of soil organic matter (increased by 27.07%) and NH4+-N (decreased by 42.15%) in the planting layer. TWPs exposure also significantly increased dehydrogenase activity and substrate-induced respiration rate, thereby promoting microbial metabolism. Microbial sequencing results revealed that TWPs decreased the relative abundance of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) and denitrifying bacteria (Dechloromonas and Thauera), reducing the nitrification rate by 42.24%. PICRUSt2 analysis further indicated that TWPs changed the relative abundance of functional genes related to nitrogen and enzyme-coding genes.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs), generated from tire abrasion, contribute significantly to environmental contamination. The toxicity of TWPs to organisms has raised significant concerns, yet their effects on terrestrial plants remain unclear. Here, we investigated the long-term impact of pristine and naturally aged TWPs on water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) and its rhizospheric soil. The results indicated that natural aging reduced the toxicity of TWPs, as evidenced by decreased levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and TWPs themselves. Consequently, aged TWPs were found to enhance the plant growth and chlorophyll content, whereas pristine TWPs increased the plant stress. Furthermore, aged TWPs improved soil organic matter (SOM) and total organic carbon (TOC), thereby boosting the microbial enzymes involved in nitrogen cycling. Metabolomic analysis revealed that aged TWPs upregulated key pathways related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism, enhancing plant growth and stress responses. Additionally, rhizosphere bacterial diversity was higher under aged TWPs, favoring nutrient-cycling taxa such as Acidobacteriota and Nitrospirota. Pristine TWPs may lead to overproliferation of certain dominant species, thereby reducing microbial diversity in soil, which could ultimately compromise the soil health. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying TWP toxicity in plants and highlight the necessity for further research on the impact of aged TWPs across various plant species over different exposure durations for comprehensive risk assessment.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) are garnering increasing attention due to their potential adverse environmental impacts. However, precisely ascertaining TWPs content is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the tire components used in the environment, indicating that more reliable methods to accurately determine TWPs are necessary. In this study, driving school grounds were used as a case study to ascertain an appropriate and reliable method to determine TWPs levels based on a comprehensive comparison between different analytical results using styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and zinc (Zn) as analytical markers. Thermogravimetric analysis-Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-GC-MS) method reliability using SBR was verified and applied to measure TWPs levels on driving school grounds. By reliably converting SBR content to TWPs content, the average TWPs content on driving school grounds was measured at 190.13 ± 101.89 mg/g. The highest TWPs content was 281.83 ± 171.44 mg/g under the reverse stall parking driving programs, while the slope start and stop driving programs was lower at 208.36 ± 124.11 mg/g. Our findings highlight the importance of accurately determining TWPs content within specific environments while comprehensively exploring associated patterns of change to better understand the environmental risks of TWPs.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) enter road surface with the friction between tires and road surfaces. Under the volatilization, leaching, and transformation action on TWPs by sunlight and rain, tire additives are released into urban water systems, such as surface rainfall runoff, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), receiving surface waters, and drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). In this study, we investigated the occurrence of 23 tire additives and their transformation products in the urban water system of the Pearl River Delta region, South China. Nineteen target compounds were detected in the surface runoff, with 1,3-Diphenylguanidine (DPG) showing highest maximum concentration of 58780 ng/L. Benzothiazole and its transformation products are detected at the frequency of 100% with the total concentrations of 480–42160 ng/L. The antioxidant derivative N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q) was also detected up to 1562 ng/L, which was considerably higher than that of the parent compound 6PPD (the maximum concentration of 7.52 ng/L). Eleven and 8 compounds were detected in WWTPs influents and effluents, respectively, with removal rates of −62-100%. Seventeen compounds were detected in the receiving Zhujiang and Dongjiang rivers, while 9 compounds were detected in drinking water sources and DWTP samples. Road runoff, with total concentrations of target compounds up to 79200 ng/L, is suggested as the main non-point source for receiving rivers, while WWTPs effluents are the point sources due to incomplete removal of target compounds after accepting the initial runoff. 6PPD-Q and other 10 compounds displayed median to high ecological risks in surface waters, and the human daily intake of tire additives was estimated to be 2.63×10 −8 -3.16×10 −5 mg/(kg d) via drinking water. This is the first report of the 6PPD-Q and 1,3-Diphenylurea levels in surface waters in China.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) are commonly studied for their exudation toxicity, yet a critical knowledge gap exists regarding the source nature and migration of these particulate pollutants, hindering comprehensive environmental risk assessments . This study explores the pristine properties of three typical TWPs (rolling friction (R-TWPs), sliding friction (S-TWPs), and cryogenically milled tire treads (C-TWPs)) and their aging characteristics after incubation in runoff (primary aging) and sewage (further aging). Our investigation aims to unveil the intrinsic mechanisms of TWPs ecotoxicity towards freshwater biofilms. Results reveal that the generation modes significantly impact pristine physicochemical properties, including surface structure, particle size, and EPFR abundance. These factors, in turn, influence acute ecotoxicity, as evidenced by cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity responses, and metabolic changes in freshwater biofilms. The ecological toxicity ranking of pristine exposure groups is S-TWPs, R-TWPs, and C-TWPs, attributed to variations in surface properties and particle size. Following incubation and aging, especially in sewage, differences in physicochemical properties among TWPs types diminish. Alarmingly, ecotoxicity intensifies and becomes consistent across TWPs types, driven by the screening of small particles during water incubation aging and the formation of EPFRs on TWPs surfaces stimulated by photosensitive organic matter or groups. This study underscores the aquatic ecological risks associated with TWP surface properties, highlighting the significant influence of environmental aging conditions on these risks.

Abstract:Understanding the behavior of tire wear particles (TWPs) and their impact on aquatic environments after aging is essential. This study explored the characteristics of TWPs generated using different methods (rolling friction, sliding friction, and cryogenic milling) and their transformation after exposure to environmental conditions mimicking runoff and sewage, focusing on their effects on river water and periphytic biofilms. Laboratory experiments indicate that at low exposure levels (0.1 mg/L), TWPs promoted biofilm growth, likely due to zinc release acting as a nutrient and the aggregation of particles serving as biofilm scaffolds. However, at higher concentrations (100 mg/L), TWPs inhibited biofilm development. This inhibition is linked to toxic byproducts like N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone and environmentally persistent free radicals, which reduce biofilm biomass, alter algal diversity, and decrease the production of essential biofilm components such as proteins and polysaccharides, consistent with the inhibitory behavior of TWPs on bis-(3'-5')-cyclic diguanosine monophosphate and quorum sensing signals, including acyl-homoserine lactone and autoinducer-2. Aging processes, particularly after simulated sewage treatment, further affect ecological impacts of TWPs, reducing the benefits observed at low concentrations and intensifying the negative effects at high concentrations. Contribution of here lies in systematically revealing the impact of TWPs on the development of aquatic biofilms, emphasizing the logical relationship between their aging characteristics, environmental behavior, and ecological risks. It assesses not only the release effects of typical additives and conventional size effects but also highlights the emerging photochemical toxicity (persistent free radicals), thus providing valuable insights into the aquatic ecological risk assessment of TWPs.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) produced by the abrasion between tires and road surfaces have been recognized as an emerging threat to soil health globally in recent years. They can be transported from the road surface to adjacent soil at different delivery rates, with precipitation a main driver underpinning this movement. However, studies typically assume an abrupt exposure of TWPs in their experimental design. In this study, we investigated the impacts of abrupt and gradual delivery of TWPs on soil physicochemical properties and microbial activities. We used two different delivery rates of TWPs (abrupt and gradual) and devised two experimental phases, namely the TWPs-delivery period (phase 1) and the end-of-delivery period (phase 2).

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWPs) are significant contributors to microplastic pollution in the environment, yet there is limited scientific information concerning their impact on soil hydraulic properties. This study aimed to investigate the impact of TWPs at different concentrations (1, 4, 8, and 16% of the air-dried mass of packed soil samples, w /w) on the water retention curves (WRC) of southern California soils with five different textures (clay, clay loam, silt loam, sandy loam, and loamy sand). The concentrations of 8% and 16% were selected to represent extreme pollution scenarios that might occur near highway corridors. High-resolution water retention data, spanning from saturation to oven dryness, were generated using HYPROPTM and WP4C dew point meter instruments. We also developed WRC scaling equations based on the quantity of TWPs. The bulk density of the samples decreased as the TWP concentration in soils increased. The inclusion of very high concentrations of TWPs (8% and 16% w /w) led to a significant reduction in soil moisture content in the intermediate and dry ranges across various soil textures. However, at the same moisture range, adding 1% TWPs had a minimal impact on soil moisture reduction, while the influence of the 4% TWPs concentration treatment was noticeable only in loamy sand and partially in clay loam soils. Additionally, the overall plant available water decreased with increasing TWP concentrations, except for the clay soil. The texture-specific scaling models exhibited promising performance, with RMSE values ranging from 0.0061 to 0.0120 cm 3 cm −3 . When bulk density was included as an additional input predictor to construct a single scaling model for all textures, the RMSE increased. Nevertheless, it still indicated a good fit ranging from 0.007 to 0.024 cm 3 cm −3 , highlighting the suitability of simple scaling for identifying WRC in TWPs-polluted soils, particularly for practical purposes. The findings of this study can contribute to a better understanding and quantification of the impact of TWPs on soil hydrology.
