Abstract:Abstract3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is a transformative technology platform impacting various disciplines, including biomaterials and biomedical devices. We present scientists, engineers, and medical professionals' perspectives about 3D printing of biomaterials and biomedical devices in this special issue. This issue is geared towards understanding the structure–process–property relationships involving different materials in vitro, in vivo, and in silico environments. The focus issue covers polymer, ceramic, glass, metallic and composite biomaterials involving various 3D-printing processes such as fused deposition, powder bed fusion, Bioprinting, directed energy deposition, and binder jetting; addressing research topics including tissue engineering, drug delivery, porous metal implants, bioink development, cell–materials interactions, wear degradation, nano-bio materials, and challenges in point-of-care delivery. Such diversity of research topics is an accurate representation of what is happening in this field globally. This article presents some of the success stories, challenges, and future directions in the 3D printing of biomaterials and devices.Graphic abstract

Abstract:<span>An implants' effectiveness depends upon the form of biomaterial used in its manufacture. A suitable material for implants should be biocompatible, sterile, mechanically stable and simple to shape. 3D printing technologies have been breaking new ground in the medical and medical industries in order to build patient-specific devices embedded in bioactive drugs, cells and proteins. Widespread use in medical 3D printing is a broad range of biomaterials including metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Continuous work and developments in biomaterials used in 3D printing have contributed to significant growth of 3D printing applications in the production of personalised joints, prostheses, medication delivery system and 3D tissue engineering and regenerative medicine scaffolds. The present analysis focuses on the biomaterials used for therapeutic applications in different 3D printing technologies. Many specific forms of medical 3D printing technology are explored in depth, including fused deposition modelling, extrusion-based bioprinting, inkjet and poly-jet printing processes, their therapeutic uses, various types of biomaterial used today and the major shortcoming , are being studied in depth.</span>

Abstract:The structural and functional repair of lost bone is still one of the biggest challenges in regenerative medicine. In many cases, autologous bone is used for the reconstruction of bone tissue; however, the availability of autologous material is limited, which always means additional stress to the patient. Due to this, more and more frequently various biocompatible materials are being used instead for bone augmentation. In this context, in order to ensure the structural function of the bone, scaffolds are implanted and fixed into the bone defect, depending on the medical indication. Nevertheless, for the surgeon, every individual clinical condition in which standardized scaffolds have to be aligned is challenging, and in many cases the alignment is not possible without limitations. Therefore, in the last decades, 3D printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) of scaffolds has become one of the most innovative approaches in surgery to individualize and improve the treatment of patients. Numerous biocompatible materials are available for 3DP, and various printing techniques can be applied, depending on the process conditions of these materials. Besides these conventional printing techniques, another promising approach in the context of medical AM is 3D bioprinting, a technique which makes it possible to print human cells embedded in special carrier substances to generate functional tissues. Even the direct printing into bone defects or lesions becomes possible. 3DP is already improving the treatment of patients, and has the potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine in future.

Abstract:The fast-developing field of 3D bio-printing has been extensively used to improve the usability and performance of scaffolds filled with cells. Over the last few decades, a variety of tissues and organs including skin, blood vessels, and hearts, etc., have all been produced in large quantities via 3D bio-printing. These tissues and organs are not only able to serve as building blocks for the ultimate goal of repair and regeneration, but they can also be utilized as in vitro models for pharmacokinetics, drug screening, and other purposes. To further 3D-printing uses in tissue engineering, research on novel, suitable biomaterials with quick cross-linking capabilities is a prerequisite. A wider variety of acceptable 3D-printed materials are still needed, as well as better printing resolution (particularly at the nanoscale range), speed, and biomaterial compatibility. The aim of this study is to provide expertise in the most prevalent and new biomaterials used in 3D bio-printing as well as an introduction to the associated approaches that are frequently considered by researchers. Furthermore, an effort has been made to convey the most pertinent implementations of 3D bio-printing processes, such as tissue regeneration, etc., by providing the most significant research together with a comprehensive list of material selection guidelines, constraints, and future prospects.

Abstract:Over millions of years of evolution, nature has created organisms with overwhelming performances due to their unique materials and structures, providing us with valuable inspirations for the development of next-generation biomedical devices. As a promising new technology, 3D printing enables the fabrication of multiscale, multi-material, and multi-functional three-dimensional (3D) biomimetic materials and structures with high precision and great flexibility. The manufacturing challenges of biomedical devices with advanced biomimetic materials and structures for various applications were overcome with the flourishing development of 3D printing technologies. In this paper, the state-of-the-art additive manufacturing of biomimetic materials and structures in the field of biomedical engineering were overviewed. Various kinds of biomedical applications, including implants, lab-on-chip, medicine, microvascular network, and artificial organs and tissues, were respectively discussed. The technical challenges and limitations of biomimetic additive manufacturing in biomedical applications were further investigated, and the potential solutions and intriguing future technological developments of biomimetic 3D printing of biomedical devices were highlighted.

Abstract:Micro and nanoscale 3D printing has been broadly employed for the manufacturing of biomimetic architectures in the fields of tissue regeneration, personalized medicine, and smart biodevices. The emerging intelligent biomaterials significantly expand the diversity and functionality of printed structures. In this review, the commonly used micro and nanoscale 3D printing techniques were briefly introduced. Recent innovations on intelligent biomaterials like biopolymers, hydrogels, and metallic/ ceramic biomaterials were reviewed. The current limitations and future opportunities of 3D-printed intelligent biomaterials for biomedical applications were highlighted. Overall, this review will help the new researchers to understand the underlying principles, functional properties, and potential applications of intelligent biomaterials in micro and nanoscale 3D printing field.

Abstract:3D printing technology has revolutionized product development in numerous industries. Due to 3D printing, innovative ways of directly giving drugs to patients, anatomical models for surgical planning and training, and tailored prosthetics and other medical equipment are all within the realm of possibility in the medical industry. 3D printing in healthcare has sparked a paradigm shift in creating medical implants and prosthetics. As a result of their exceptional mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical qualities, polymers and composites made of them have gained widespread use in the medical industry. In this review article, we look at the most recent and cutting-edge benefits of 3D printing technology to create medical products out of polymers and composites. This article summarizes recent findings in patient-specific medical device and prosthesis design and manufacture and anatomical model development for surgical training and planning. Various 3D printing techniques, i.e., stereolithography, fused deposition modeling, and selective laser sintering methods, were examined, along with the pros and cons. Finally, we discuss the importance of 3D printing, which could significantly alter how medical devices are designed and produced, enhancing healthcare services and improving patient outcomes.

Polymers and their composites have become attractive materials in this industry because of their unique mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical qualities. This review article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state-of-the-art applications of polymer and its composites in the medical field using 3D printing technology. It covers the latest research developments in the design and manufacturing of patient-specific medical devices, prostheses, and anatomical models for surgical planning and training. The article also discusses the use of 3D printing technology for drug delivery systems (DDS) and tissue engineering. Various 3D printing techniques, such as stereolithography, fused deposition modeling (FDM), and selective laser sintering (SLS), are reviewed, along with their benefits and drawbacks. Legal and regulatory issues related to the use of 3D printing technology in the medical field are also addressed. The article concludes with an outlook on the future potential of polymer and its composites in 3D printing technology for the medical field. The research findings indicate that 3D printing technology has enormous potential to revolutionize the development and manufacture of medical devices, leading to improved patient outcomes and better healthcare services.

Abstract:Along with the rapid and extensive advancements in the 3D printing field, a diverse range of uses for 3D printing have appeared in the spectrum of medical applications. Vat photopolymerization (VPP) stands out as one of the most extensively researched methods of 3D printing, with its main advantages being a high printing speed and the ability to produce high-resolution structures. A major challenge in using VPP 3D-printed materials in medicine is the general incompatibility of standard VPP resin mixtures with the requirements of biocompatibility and biofunctionality. Instead of developing completely new materials, an alternate approach to solving this problem involves adapting existing biomaterials. These materials are incompatible with VPP 3D printing in their pure form but can be adapted to the VPP chemistry and general process through the use of innovative mixtures and the addition of specific pre- and post-printing steps. This review’s primary objective is to highlight biofunctional and biocompatible materials that have been adapted to VPP. We present and compare the suitability of these adapted materials to different medical applications and propose other biomaterials that could be further adapted to the VPP 3D printing process in order to fulfill patient-specific medical requirements.

Abstract:Abstract3D Printing promises to produce complex biomedical devices according to computer design using patient-specific anatomical data. Since its initial use as pre-surgical visualization models and tooling molds, 3D Printing has slowly evolved to create one-of-a-kind devices, implants, scaffolds for tissue engineering, diagnostic platforms, and drug delivery systems. Fueled by the recent explosion in public interest and access to affordable printers, there is renewed interest to combine stem cells with custom 3D scaffolds for personalized regenerative medicine. Before 3D Printing can be used routinely for the regeneration of complex tissues (e.g. bone, cartilage, muscles, vessels, nerves in the craniomaxillofacial complex), and complex organs with intricate 3D microarchitecture (e.g. liver, lymphoid organs), several technological limitations must be addressed. In this review, the major materials and technology advances within the last five years for each of the common 3D Printing technologies (Three Dimensional Printing, Fused Deposition Modeling, Selective Laser Sintering, Stereolithography, and 3D Plotting/Direct-Write/Bioprinting) are described. Examples are highlighted to illustrate progress of each technology in tissue engineering, and key limitations are identified to motivate future research and advance this fascinating field of advanced manufacturing.

Abstract:4D printing can be defined as the fabrication of structures using smart materials that allow the final object to change its shape, properties, or function in response to an external stimulus such as light, heat, or moisture. The available technologies, materials, and applications have evolved significantly since their first development in 2013, with prospective applications within the aerospace, manufacturing, and soft robotic industries. This review focuses on the printing technologies and smart materials currently available for fabricating these structures. The applications of 4D printing within biomedicine are explored with a focus on tissue engineering, drug delivery, and artificial organs. Finally, some ideas for potential uses are proposed. 4D printing is making its mark with seemingly unlimited potential applications, however, its use in mainstream medical treatments relies on further developments and extensive research investments.

Abstract:3D printing technology, otherwise known as additive manufacturing, has provided a promising tool for manufacturing customized biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. A vast variety of biomaterials including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites are currently being used as base materials in 3D printing. In recent years, nanomaterials have been incorporated into 3D printing polymers to fabricate innovative, versatile, multifunctional hybrid materials that can be used in many different applications within the biomedical field. This review focuses on recent advances in novel hybrid biomaterials composed of nanomaterials and 3D printing technologies for biomedical applications. Various nanomaterials including metal-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, upconversion nanoparticles, and lipid-based nanoparticles used for 3D printing are presented, with a summary of the mechanisms, functional properties, advantages, disadvantages, and applications in biomedical 3D printing. Abstract:The scope of three-dimensional printing is expanding rapidly, with innovative approaches resulting in the evolution of state-of-the-art 3D bioprinting (3DbioP) techniques for solving issues in bioengineering and biopharmaceutical research. The methods and tools in 3DbioP emphasize the extrusion process, bioink formulation, and stability of the bioprinted scaffold. Thus, 3DbioP technology augments 3DP in the biological world by providing technical support to regenerative therapy, drug delivery, bioengineering of prosthetics, and drug kinetics research. Besides the above, drug delivery and dosage control have been achieved using 3D bioprinted microcarriers and capsules. Developing a stable, biocompatible, and versatile bioink is a primary requisite in biofabrication. The 3DbioP research is breaking the technical barriers at a breakneck speed. Numerous techniques and biomaterial advancements have helped to overcome current 3DbioP issues related to printability, stability, and bioink formulation. Therefore, this Review aims to provide an insight into the technical challenges of bioprinting, novel biomaterials for bioink formulation, and recently developed 3D bioprinting methods driving future applications in biofabrication research.

Abstract:<p>3D printing and nanotechnology have been two important tools in the development of therapeutic approaches for personalized medicine. More recently, their alliance has been improved in an effort to build innovative, versatile, multifunctional, and/or smart medical and pharmaceutical products. Therefore, an extensive review about scientific studies that ally 3D printing and nanomaterials in the development of new approaches for pharmaceutical and medical applications for the treatment and prevention of diseases is presented here. The articles are classified into five categories according to their main application: Cell growth and tissue engineering, antimicrobial, drug delivery, stimulus‐response, and theranostics. Semisolid extrusion, inorganic nanoparticles, and cell growth and tissue engineering are the most reported 3D printing technique, type of nanomaterial, and application, respectively. The increase in papers dedicated to these areas is also notable, especially in the 2019 and 2020, when semisolid extrusion became the most used technique, overcoming fused deposition modelling. In fact, this review highlights that the possibility of an alliance between 3D printing and nanotechnology for the production of multiscale materials is undoubtedly a great opportunity for knowledge and innovation in the pharmaceutical and medical area.</p>

Abstract:Over the past 20 years, Medical Additive Manufacturing has been immensely developed and become an essential part of Contemporary healthcare. In the past, additive manufacturing was only utilized to develop basic anatomical models, but as technology evolved, it became more straightforward for researchers to produce complex medical devices. Medical additive manufacturing is a promptly emerging field with the competence to print living tissues and organs for transplantation and produce personalized implants and prostheses with astounding precision and accuracy. The ability of 3D printing to produce products that precisely match a patient’s unique anatomy has significant benefits for medicine, including better patient outcomes. Additive manufacturing is often employed in the orthopedic and dentistry fields to design, build, or produce parts specifically for the patient’s exact and ideal fit. Additionally, it is extensively being utilized to produce surgical equipment and customized anatomical models for pre-surgical planning. This allows surgeons to practice complex procedures on a replica of the patient’s anatomy, improving surgical outcomes and reducing the risk of complications. Experts are exploring the possibility of utilizing 3D printing techniques for developing innovative methods to administer medication, which could improve treatment effectiveness and patient well-being. Additionally, these advancements have contributed immensely to creating human organs through bio-printing technology; a progress that has the potential to revolutionize organ transplants as they exist today by reducing dependence on donors. Another imminent advancement is surgical robotics using robots created through 3D printing procedures working side by side with medical experts thus improving patient outcomes and decreasing risks associated with traditional surgery techniques. Ongoing research and development promise even more groundbreaking applications in the future. Abstract:4D printing has emerged as a transformative technology in the field of biomedical engineering, offering the potential for dynamic, stimuli-responsive structures with applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, medical devices, and diagnostics. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the advancements, challenges, and future directions of 4D printing in biomedical engineering. We discuss the development of smart materials, including stimuli-responsive polymers, shape-memory materials, and bio-inks, as well as the various fabrication techniques employed, such as direct-write assembly, stereolithography, and multi-material jetting. Despite the promising advances, several challenges persist, including material limitations related to biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and degradation rates; fabrication complexities arising from the integration of multiple materials, resolution and accuracy, and scalability; and regulatory and ethical considerations surrounding safety and efficacy. As we explore the future directions for 4D printing, we emphasise the need for material innovations, fabrication advancements, and emerging applications such as personalised medicine, nanomedicine, and bioelectronic devices. Interdisciplinary research and collaboration between material science, biology, engineering, regulatory agencies, and industry are essential for overcoming challenges and realising the full potential of 4D printing in the biomedical engineering landscape.

Abstract:Most of the biomedical materials printed using 3D bioprinting are static and are unable to alter/transform with dynamic changes in the internal environment of the body. The emergence of four-dimensional (4D) printing addresses this problem. By preprogramming dynamic polymer materials and their nanocomposites, 4D printing is able to produce the desired shapes or transform functions under specific conditions or stimuli to better adapt to the surrounding environment. In this review, the current and potential applications of 4D-printed materials are introduced in different aspects of the biomedical field, e.g., tissue engineering, drug delivery, and sensors. In addition, the existing limitations and possible solutions are discussed. Finally, the current limitations of 4D-printed materials along with their future perspective are presented to provide a basis for future research.

Abstract:3D bioprinting has shown great promise in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for creating patient-specific tissue scaffolds and medicinal devices. The quickness, accurate imaging, and design targeting of this emerging technology have excited biomedical engineers and translational medicine researchers. Recently, scaffolds made from 3D bioprinted tissue have become more clinically effective due to nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Because of quantum confinement effects and high surface area/volume ratios, nanomaterials and nanotechnological techniques have unique physical, chemical, and biological features. The use of nanomaterials and 3D bioprinting has led to scaffolds with improved physicochemical and biological properties. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials affect 3D bioprinted tissue engineered scaffolds for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Biomaterials and cells that respond to stimuli change the structural shape in 4D bioprinting. With such dynamic designs, tissue architecture can change morphologically. New 4D bioprinting techniques will aid in bioactuation, biorobotics, and biosensing. The potential of 4D bioprinting in biomedical technologies is also discussed in this article.
