Abstract:The object of the present study was to Functionalize adhesive system with antibacterial activity without interfering the bonding effect, to kill bacteria residue on cavity and prevent bacteria from colonization on the margins of bonding. The fluorine -containing imidazolium salt antibacterial monomer was synthesized by the combination reaction of 1-chlorododecane and 1-vinylimidazole, and the replacement reaction to introduce fluoride ion. The synthesized intermediate product and final product were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was introduced into the bonding system in the form of organic fluorine, and the release behavior of fluoride ion from the functionalized adhesive was studied. The antibacterial experiment showed that the functionalized adhesive was endowed with good antibacterial property, which realized targeted anti -caries ability. The bond strength test indicated that the functionalization with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer did not affect the bonding performance of the adhesive. These results suggested that adhesive functionalized with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer had potential for reducing the occurrence of clinical secondary caries.
In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of a Novel Resin-Based Pulp Capping Material Containing the Quaternary Ammonium Salt MAE-DB and Portland Cement.

Abstract:Background: Vital pulp preservation in the treatment of deep caries is challenging due to bacterial infection. The objectives of this study were to synthesize a novel, light-cured composite material containing bioactive calcium-silicate (Portland cement, PC) and the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium salt monomer 2-methacryloxylethyl dodecyl methyl ammonium bromide (MAE-DB) and to evaluate its effects on Streptococcus mutans growth in vitro.Methods: The experimental material was prepared from a 2: 1 ratio of PC mixed with a resin of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate, bisphenol glycerolate dimethacrylate, and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (4: 3: 1) containing 5 wt% MAE-DB. Cured resin containing 5% MAE-DB without PC served as the positive control material, and resin without MAE-DB or PC served as the negative control material. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium hydroxide (Dycal) served as commercial controls. S. mutans biofilm formation on material surfaces and growth in the culture medium were tested according to colony-forming units (CFUs) and metabolic activity after 24 h incubation over freshly prepared samples or samples aged in water for 6 months. Biofilm formation was also assessed by Live/Dead staining and scanning electron microscopy.Results: S. mutans biofilm formation on the experimental material was significantly inhibited, with CFU counts, metabolic activity, viability staining, and morphology similar to those of biofilms on the positive control material. None of the materials affected bacterial growth in solution. Contact-inhibition of biofilm formation was retained by the aged experimental material. Significant biofilm formation was observed on MTA and Dycal.Conclusion: The synthesized material containing HEMA-BisGMA-TEGDMA resin with MAE-DB as the antimicrobial agent and PC to support mineralized tissue formation inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation even after aging in water for 6 months, but had no inhibitory effect on bacteria in solution. Therefore, this material shows promise as a pulp capping material for vital pulp preservation in the treatment of deep caries.
Antibacterial Activity of a Modified Unfilled Resin Containing a Novel Polymerizable Quaternary Ammonium Salt MAE-HB

Abstract:Resins with strong and long-lasting antibacterial properties are critical for the prevention of secondary dental caries. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial effect and the underlying mechanism of action of an unfilled resin incorporating 2-methacryloxylethyl hexadecyl methyl ammonium bromide (MAE-HB) against Streptococcus mutans UA159 ( S. mutans UA159). MAE-HB was added into unfilled resin at 10 mass%, and unfilled resin without MAE-HB served as the control. Bacterial growth was inhibited on 10%-MAE-HB unfilled resin compared with the control at 1 d, 7 d, 30 d, or 180 d (P < 0.05). The growth inhibitory effect was independent of the incubation time (P > 0.05). No significant differences in the antibacterial activities of eluents from control versus 10%-MAE-HB unfilled resins were observed at any time point (P > 0.05). The number of bacteria attached to 10%-MAE-HB unfilled resin was considerably lower than that to control. Fe-SEM and CLSM showed that 10%-MAE-HB unfilled resin disturbed the integrity of bacterial cells. Expression of the bacterial glucosyltransferases, gtfB and gtfC , was lower on 10%-MAE-HB unfilled resin compared to that on control (P < 0.05). These data indicate that incorporation of MAE-HB confers unfilled resin with strong and long-lasting antibacterial effects against S. mutans.

Abstract:In this study, two novel quaternary ammonium urethane-dimethacrylates (QAUDMAs) were designed for potential use as comonomers in antibacterial dental composite restorative materials. QAUDMAs were synthesized via the reaction of 1,3-bis(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)benzene with 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl-2-decylhydroxyethylmethylammonium bromide (QA10+TMXDI) and 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl-2-dodecylhydroxyethylmethylammonium bromide (QA12+TMXDI). Their compositions with common dental dimethacrylates comprising QAUDMA 20 wt.%, urethane-dimethacrylate monomer (UDMA) 20 wt.%, bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) 40 wt.%, and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) 20 wt.%, were photocured. The achieved copolymers were characterized for their physicochemical and mechanical properties, including their degree of conversion (DC), glass transition temperature (Tg), polymerization shrinkage (S), water contact angle (WCA), flexural modulus (E), flexural strength (FS), hardness (HB), water sorption (WS), and water leachability (WL). The antibacterial activity of the copolymers was characterized by the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The achieved results were compared to the properties of a typical dental copolymer comprising UDMA 40 wt.%, Bis-GMA 40 wt.%, and TEGDMA 20 wt.%. The introduction of QAUDMAs did not deteriorate physicochemical and mechanical properties. The WS and WL increased; however, they were still satisfactory. The copolymer comprising QA10+TMXDI showed a higher antibacterial effect than that comprising QA12+TMXDI and that of the reference copolymer.

Abstract:Dental caries is prevalent, and secondary caries causes restoration failures. This article reviews recent studies on developing a new generation of bioactive resins with anticaries properties. Extensive effects were made to develop new antimicrobial composites, bonding agents, and other resins containing quaternary ammonium methacrylates to suppress plaque buildup and bacterial acid production. The effects of alkyl chain length and charge density and the antimicrobial mechanisms for chlorhexidine, nano-silver, quaternary ammonium methacrylates, and protein-repellent agents were discussed. Synergistic effects of contact-killing and protein-repellent properties were shown to yield the greatest biofilm-inhibition effects. The combination of antimicrobial, protein-repellent, and calcium phosphate nanoparticle remineralization was suggested to provide maximal anticaries effects. In addition, for use orally, cytotoxicity and biocompatibility were important considerations for the new bioactive materials. Furthermore, rather than kill all bacteria, it would be more desirable to modulate the oral biofilm compositions via bioactive resins to suppress cariogenic/pathogenic species and promote benign species. For widespread clinical use of the new antimicrobial and therapeutic materials, whether they would induce bacterial drug resistance needs to be determined, which requires further study. Nonetheless, the new generation of bioactive anticaries resins with therapeutic and biofilm acid-inhibiting properties has the potential to substantially benefit oral health.

Abstract:A novel antimicrobial dental composite resin has been developed and evaluated. Alumina filler particles were covalently coated with an antibacterial resin and blended into a composite resin formulation. Surface hardness and bacterial viability were used to evaluate the modified composite resin. Results showed that almost all the modified composite resins exhibited higher antibacterial activity along with improved surface hardness, as compared to unmodified one. Effects of antibacterial moiety content on the modified fillers, modified alumina particle size and loading, and total filler content were investigated. It was found that increasing antibacterial moiety content, particle size and loading of the modified filler, and total filler content generally increased surface hardness. Increasing antibacterial moiety, filler loading and total filler content increased antibacterial activity. On the other hand, increasing particle size showed a negative impact on antibacterial activity. The leaching tests indicate that the modified experimental composite resin showed no leachable antibacterial component to bacteria and 3T3 mouse fibroblasts.

Abstract:For the purpose of endowing dental resin with antibacterial activity without impairing physicochemical properties, polymerizable quaternarized thiazole salts (QAMEMT-x) with different alkyl chain length (12, 14, and 16) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectra. After adding 5 wt.% of QAMEMT-x into Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (50/50, wt./wt.) dental resin, double bond conversion (DC), volumetric shrinkage (VS), flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM), water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL), and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) of obtained resin systems were investigated. The results showed that 5 wt.% of QAMEMT-x had no influence on DC, FS, FM, WS, and SL (α > 0.05), while could reduce VS of dental resin (α < 0.05). Cured resins with 5 wt.% of QAMEMT-x all showed antibacterial activity against S. mutans, and QAMEMT-16 could endow cured resin with the strongest antibacterial activity which showed an antibacterial efficiency of more than 99%.

Dental plaque microcosm biofilm behavior on calcium phosphate nanocomposite with quaternary ammonium

Abstract:Objectives: Half of dental restorations fail in 10 years, with secondary caries as the main reason. Calcium phosphate composites could remineralize tooth lesions. The objectives of this study were to: (1) impart antibacterial activity to a composite with nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP); and (2) investigate the effect of quaternary ammonium dimethacrylate (QADM) on mechanical and dental plaque microcosm biofilm properties for the first time. Methods: The NACP and glass particles were filled into a dental resin that contained bis(2-methacryloyloxy-ethyl) dimethyl-ammonium bromide, the QADM. NACP nanocomposites containing 0%, 7%, 14%, and 17.5% of QADM by mass, respectively, were photo-cured. A commercial composite with no antibacterial activity was used as control. Mechanical properties were measured in three-point flexure. A human saliva microcosm model was used to grow biofilms on composites. Live/dead assay, metabolic activity, colony-forming unit (CFU) counts, and lactic acid production of biofilms on the composites were measured. Results: Increasing QADM mass fraction monotonically reduced the biofilm viability, CFU and lactic acid. Biofilms on NACP nanocomposite with 17.5% QADM had metabolic activity that was 30% that on a commercial composite control (p<0.05). Total microorganisms, total streptococci, and mutans streptococci CFU counts (mean ± sd; n = 6) on composite control was 6-fold those on NACP +17.5% QADM nanocomposite. Composite control had long strings of bacterial cells with normal short-rod shapes, while some cells on NACP-QADM nanocomposites disintegrated into pieces. Adding QADM to NACP did not decrease the composite strength and elastic modulus, which matched (p>0.1) those of a commercial composite without Ca-PO(4) or antibacterial activity. Significance: A dental plaque microcosm model was used to evaluate the novel NACP-QADM nanocomposite. The nanocomposite greatly reduced the biofilm viability, metabolic activity and lactic acid, while its mechanical properties matched those of a commercial composite. NACP-QADM nanocomposite with calcium phosphate fillers, good mechanical properties and a strong antibacterial activity may have potential for anti-biofilm and anti-caries restorations.

Abstract:This study investigated the resin-dentin bond strength (μTBS), degree of conversion (DC), and antibacterial potential of an innovative adhesive system containing a quaternary ammonium methacrylate polymer (QAMP) using in situ and in vitro assays. Forty-two human third molars were flattened until the dentin was exposed and were randomly distributed into three groups of self-etching adhesive systems: Clearfil™ SE Bond containing 5% QAMP (experimental group), Clearfil™ Protect Bond (positive control) and Clearfil™ SE Bond (negative control). After light curing, three 1 mm-increments of composite resin were bonded to each dentin surface. A total of thirty of these bonded teeth (10 teeth per group) was sectioned to obtain stick-shaped specimens and tested under tensile stress immediately, and after 6 and 12 months of storage in distilled water. Twelve bonded teeth (4 teeth per group) were longitudinally sectioned in a mesio-to-distal direction to obtain resin-bonded dentin slabs. In situ DC was evaluated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. In vitro DC of thin films of each adhesive system was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In vitro susceptibility tests of these three adhesive systems were performed by the minimum inhibitory/minimum bactericidal concentration (MIC/MBC) assays against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, and Actinomyces naeslundii. No statistically significant difference in μTBS was observed between Clearfil™ SE Bond containing 5% QAMP and Clearfil™ SE Bond (p>0.05) immediately, and after 6 and 12 months of water storage. However Clearfil™ Protect Bond showed a significant reduction of μTBS after 12 months of storage (p=0.039). In addition, QAMP provided no significant change in DC after incorporating into Clearfil™ SE Bond (p>0.05). Clearfil™ SE Bond containing 5% QAMP demonstrated MIC/MBC values similar to the positive control against L. casei and A. naeslundii and higher than the negative control for all evaluated bacterial strains. The use of QAMP in an adhesive system demonstrated effective bond strength, a suitable degree of conversion, and adequate antibacterial effects against oral bacteria, and may be useful as a new approach to provide long-lasting results for dental adhesives.

Abstract:Objective Secondary caries caused by oral microbiome dysbiosis and hybrid layer degradation are two important contributors to the poor resin–dentin bond durability. Cavity cleansers with long-term antimicrobial and anti-proteolytic activities are in demand for eliminating bacteria-induced secondary caries and preventing hybrid layers from degradation. The objectives of the present study were to examine the long-term antimicrobial effect and anti-proteolytic potential of poly(amidoamine) dendrimers with amino terminal groups (PAMAM-NH 2 ) cavity cleanser. Methods Adsorption tests by attenuated total reflectance–infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were first performed to evaluate whether the PAMAM-NH 2 cavity cleanser had binding capacity to dentin surface to fulfill its relatively long-term antimicrobial and anti-proteolytic effects. For antibacterial testing, Streptococcus mutans , Actinomyces naeslundii , and Enterococcus faecalis were grown on dentin surfaces, prior to the application of cavity cleanser. Colony-forming unit (CFU) counts and live/dead bacterial staining were performed to assess antibacterial effects. Gelatinolytic activity within the hybrid layers was directly detected by in situ zymography. Adhesive permeability of bonded interface and microtensile bond strength were employed to assess whether the PAMAM-NH 2 cavity cleanser adversely affected resin–dentin bonding. Finally, the cytotoxicity of PAMAM-NH 2 was evaluated by the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Results Adsorption tests demonstrated that the binding capacity of PAMAM-NH 2 on dentin surface was much stronger than that of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) because its binding was strong enough to resist phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) washing. Antibacterial testing indicated that PAMAM-NH 2 significantly inhibited bacteria grown on the dentin discs as compared with the control group (p < 0.05), which was comparable with the antibacterial activity of 2% CHX (p > 0.05). Hybrid layers conditioned with PAMAM-NH 2 showed significant decrease in gelatin activity as compared with the control group. Furthermore, PAMAM-NH 2 pretreatment did not adversely affect resin–dentin bonding because it did not decrease adhesive permeability and microtensile strength. CCK-8 assay showed that PAMAM-NH 2 had low cytotoxicity on human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) and L929. Conclusions PAMAM-NH 2 cavity cleanser developed in this study could provide simultaneous long-term antimicrobial and anti-proteolytic activities for eliminating secondary caries that result from a dysbiosis in the oral microbiome and for preventing hybrid layers from degradation due to its good binding capacity to dentin collagen matrix, which are crucial for the maintenance of resin–dentin bond durability.

Abstract:The antibacterial properties of resins incorporating MAE-DB and the underlying mechanisms of action were evaluated. Antibacterial effects against Streptococcus mutans were tested using the film contact method, with accumulation and membrane integrity observed by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. Quantitative PCR was used to determine expression of the S. mutans glucosyltransferase B (gtfB) gene on the surface of resins containing 10% MAE-DB. Bacterial growth was inhibited on resin containing 10% MAE-DB as compared with the control at 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or 180 days (p < 0.05). For the 10%-MAE-DB resin, no significant differences in bacterial viability were found regardless of the time of incubation (p > 0.05). The number of bacteria attached to resin containing 10% MAE-DB was considerably lower than the control. The proportion of bacteria with damaged cell membranes was increased in the experimental resin over controls. Expression of gtfB was reduced by 10% MAE-DB compared with the control (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that MAE-DB can be incorporated into resin materials at sufficient concentrations for long-term antibacterial effects against S. mutans after polymerization by attenuating gtfB expression and impairing membrane integrity.

Abstract:The Software Engineering Apprentice is a model of programming instruction that focuses on “programming in the large.” We have developed a set of innovative laboratory programming exercises that can be used in a Fundamentals of Computer Science course sequence. The exercises revolve around a series of sophisticated “case studies”: complete software applications that we developed to exemplify good software engineering methods. In addition to functioning source code, the case studies include other software development artifacts: specifications, test plans, and design documents. As an alternative to the “build it from scratch then throw it away” mentality of most assignments in a first course, the Software Engineering Apprentice approach demands that students build upon large pre-existing software applications. Instead of the “language feature of the week” program assignments that are typical in these courses, the exercises we developed are modelled after tasks found in a real software development environment...

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) represent one of the most effective classes of disinfectant agents in dental materials and resin nanocomposites. This reviews aims to give a wide overview on the research in the field of antibacterial QACs in dental materials and nanocomposites.METHOD: An introduction to dental materials components as well as the microorganisms and methods of evaluation for the antimicrobial assays are presented. Then, the properties and synthesis route of QACs, as monomer and filler, are shown. Finally, antimicrobial monomers and fillers, specifically those contain quaternary ammonium salts (QASs), in dental materials are reviewed.RESULTS: QACs have been used as monomer and micro/nanofiller in restorative dentistry. They possess one or more methacrylate functional groups to participate in polymerization reactions. QACs with multiple methacrylate groups can also be used as crosslinking agents. Furthermore, QACs with chain length from ∼12 to 16 have higher antimicrobial activity in cured dental resins. In general, increasing the chain length leads to a threshold value (critical point) and then it causes decrease in the antimicrobial activity.SIGNIFICANCE: The current state of the art of dental materials and resin nanocomposites includes a wide variety of antimicrobial materials. Among them, QACs presents low cytotoxicity and excellent long-term antimicrobial activity without leaching out over time.

Abstract:We postulate that microbial metabolism and production in cold waters are hmited by the ability of bacteria to transport and/or assimilate substrates at the low concentrations usually present. We measured rates of microbial activity in the water colunln and benthos in Conception Bay, Newfoundland and adjacent coastal waters, during 3 spring blooms. Chlorophyll abundance and distribution, photosynthesis, benthic respiratory rate and remineralization, bacterioplankton abundance, and production of bacterial blomass were measured in the water column, and the respuatory rate of benthic sediments was measured in situ by a free vehicle containing bell jars equipped w t h oxygen electrodes and syringe samplers. During 3 spring seasons, bacterioplankton numbers during the spring phytoplankton bloom exceeded 5 X lo5 ml-' only 15 % of the time. These numbers rank at the lower end of the range of bacterial numbers for the world's ocean. Bacterial productivity measured by 3 methods suggested average generation times of 30 to 86 d, although some samples in the chlorophyll maximum layer showed short generation times. Bacterial production and respiration, averaged over the entire water column, plus benthic aerobic respiration and denitrification, accounted for 3 % of primary production during the early bloom and 28 % of primary production during the late bloom. The difference between the early and late bloom is related to observed changes in primary production, not to increased microbial activity. Unless bacterial assimilation efficiency was very low, much less than half of the organic production of the spring diatom bloom was used by microbial processes dunng the early, highly productive phase of the bloom, while somewhat more than half of organic production was used in the short term during the later, less productive phase of the spring bloom. To test the hypothesis that bacteria require hlgher substrate concentrations at low temperature, water samples were amended with glucose and proteose-peptone and incubated for 2 wk at 1 to + 15 "C. Respiratory rate, measured at intervals of 1 to 2 d , increased with increasing temperature andlor substrate concentration. Analysis of vanance showed significant effects of temperature and substrate in all cases. In 3 of 4 experiments there were also significant effects due to the interaction of temperature and substrate

Abstract:Dental resin composites (DRCs) are commonly used to restore teeth affected by dental caries or defects. These materials must possess excellent properties to withstand the complex oral environment. The objective of this study was to prepare and characterize Boron nitride nanosheets (BNN)/ dimethyl amino hexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) composites (BNN/DMA), and to evaluate them as functional fillers to enhance the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of dental resins. The BNN/DMA composites were successfully prepared under the theoretical guidance of molecular dynamics (MD), and then the physicochemical and morphological characterization of the BNN/DMA composites were carried out by using various test methods, such as FT-IR, XRD, UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and AFM. It was doped into the dental flowable resin in a certain proportion, and the results showed that the flexural strength (FS), elastic modulus (EM), compressive strength (CS), and microhardness (MH) of the modified resin composites were increased by 53.29, 47.8, 97.59, and 37.1%, respectively, with the addition of 0.8 wt % of BNN/DMA composite fillers. It has a good inhibition effect on <i>Streptococcus mutans</i>, with an inhibition rate as high as 90.43%. Furthermore, this effect persists even after one month of aging. In conclusion, the modification of flowable resins with low-concentration BNN/DMA composites favorably integrates the mechanical properties and long-term antimicrobial activity of dental resins. At the same time, they have good biocompatibility and do not affect the aesthetics. The BNN/DMA composite modified flowable resin has the potential to become a new type of antimicrobial dental restorative material.

Abstract:Objectives Given the global prevalence of dental caries, impacting 2.5 billion individuals, the development of sophisticated prevention filling materials is crucial. Streptococcus mutans , the principal caries-causing strain, produces acids that demineralize teeth and initiate dental caries. To address this issue, we aimed to develop a synergistic resin-based composite for enhancing caries control. Methods The synergistic resin composite incorporates fluorinated kaolinite and silanized Al 2 O 3 nanoparticle fillers into an epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) immobilized urethane-modified epoxy acrylate (U-EA) resin matrix, referred to the as-prepared resin composite. The EGCG-modified TPGDA/U-EA network was synthesized by preparing methacrylate-functionalized isocyanate (HI), reacting it with EGCG to form HI-EGCG, and then incorporating HI-EGCG into the TPGDA/U-EA matrix. The lamellar space within the kaolinite layer was expanded through the intercalation of acrylamide into kaolinite, enhancing its capability to adsorb and release fluoride ions (F – ). The layered structure of acrylamide/ kaolinite in the U-EA resin composite acts as a F – reservoir. Results The physico-mechanical properties of the as-prepared resin composites are comparable to those of commercial products, exhibiting lower polymerization shrinkage, substantial F – release and recharge and favorable diametral tensile strength. The immobilized EGCG in the composite exhibits potent antimicrobial properties, effectively reducing the biofilm biomass. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of EGCG and fluorinated kaolinite efficiently counteracts acid-induced hydroxyapatite dissolution, thereby suppressing demineralization and promoting enamel remineralization. Significance Our innovative EGCG and fluoride synergistic composite provides enhanced antimicrobial properties, durable anti-demineralization, and tooth remineralization effects, positioning it as a promising solution for effective caries control and long-term dental maintenance.

Abstract:Provisional crowns are often used in dentistry for prolonged periods, but bacterial attachment and dental plaque often lead to gingival inflammation and secondary caries. The aims of this research were to develop a novel resin-based antibacterial provisional crown coating to prevent secondary caries and investigate the physical properties and antibacterial efficacy. The resin-based coating was prepared by addition of triethylene glycoldivinylbenzyl ether and urethane dimethacrylate, with the antibacterial monomer dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM) incorporated at different mass fractions. Surface characteristics including surface roughness and contact angle were assessed. The antibacterial effects were evaluated by 48 h biofilms of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on provisional crowns coated with the resin-based coating. No statistically significant difference was observed in surface roughness across all groups (p > 0.05), showing that adding DMADDM did not have a negative impact on surface roughness. The contact angle results revealed a significant difference in hydrophilicity between different concentrations of DMADDM (p < 0.01), but overall hydrophilicity did not negatively affect the performance of the coating. The incorporation of 5% DMADDM demonstrated a significant antibiofilm effect on S. mutans biofilm CFU with a 4-log reduction compared to controls (p < 0.01). Significant reductions of 4–5 folds were observed in biofilm metabolic activity and lactic acid production (p < 0.01). The findings suggest that the novel coating material could enhance the long-term performance and clinical outcomes of provisional crowns, contributing to better patient oral health.

Abstract:Resin-based dental materials have been one of the ideal choices among various materials in the treatment of dental caries. However, resin-based dental materials still have some drawbacks, such as the lack of inherent antibacterial activity. Extensive research has been conducted on the use of novel quaternary ammonium monomers (QAMs) to impart antibacterial activity to dental materials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in quaternary ammonium monomers (QAMs) for dental applications. The current progress and limitations of QAMs are discussed based on the evolution of their structures. The functional diversification and enhancement of QAMs are presented. QAMs have the potential to provide long-term antibacterial activity in dental resin composites, thereby prolonging their service life. However, there is a need to balance antibacterial performance with other material properties and the potential impact on the oral microbiome and general health. Finally, the necessity for further scientific progress in the development of novel quaternary ammonium monomers and the optimization of dental resin formulations is emphasized.

Abstract:Statement of problem Denture base materials are highly susceptible to microbial colonization, which can lead to denture stomatitis. In addition, patients who sleep with their dentures have an increased chance of contracting pneumonia. Commercially available antimicrobial denture base materials to prevent or combat microbial colonization are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effects of K18 quaternary ammonium methacryloxy silane-functionalized filler (K18-Filler) and methyl methacrylate (K18-MMA) on the polymerization of 3D printed denture base material and its esthetic, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties. Material and methods K18-Filler (0%, 10%, 20% w/w) and K18-MMA (0%, 5%, 12.5% w/w) were added to a 3D printable denture base resin (Denture Base Resin, Original Pink; Formlabs Inc.) and 3D printed. Specimens were tested by using the Rockwell 15T hardness, near infrared FTIR monomer-to-polymer degree of conversion (DoC), transparency parameter (TP), color shift, and 3-point bend and by counting colony forming units against Streptococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguinis and Candida albicans tests. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance with the Tukey-Kramer HSD post hoc test. Results Control resins had significantly higher Rockwell 15T hardness than most of the K18 groups ( P <.05) but had comparable DoC with all K18 groups except one, showing that all groups were well polymerized. Controls had significantly higher TP than most K18 groups, but most K18 groups had ΔE 8. All K18 groups had comparable or greater moduli than the controls, but the controls had significantly higher ultimate transverse strengths than most K18 groups ( P <.05). All 12.5% K18-MMA with K18-Filler groups had significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus , S. sanguinis , and C. albicans . Conclusions 12.5% K18-MMA and K18-Filler produced 3D printable denture materials with comparable polymerization properties and significant antimicrobial properties against S. mutans , S. sanguinis , and C. albicans . High K18-MMA and K18-Filler concentrations caused significant color shifts and reductions in ultimate strengths.
