Abstract:While mobile computing provides organizations with many information systems implementation alternatives, it is often difficult to predict the potential benefits, limitations, and problems with mobile applications. Given the inherent portability of mobile devices, many design and use issues can arise which do not exist with desktop systems. While many existing rules of thumb for design of stationary systems apply to mobile systems, many new ones emerge. Issues such as the security and privacy of information take on new dimensions, and potential conflicts can develop when a single mobile device serves both personal and business needs. This paper identifies potential issues and problems with the use of mobile information systems by examining both personal and organizational perspectives of mobile devices and applications. It provides a set of guidelines that can assist organizations in making decisions about the design and implementation of mobile technologies and applications in organizations.

Abstract:Serial MRI is an important measure of disease progression in evaluating the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Accurate comparisons of scans for lesion activity and lesion volume require precise repositioning of patients. A simple, reproducible repositioning method is described. In a multicenter treatment trial of MS using β‐interferon‐1b, this method has been successful, with only 1.1% of scans being rejected because of poor repositioning.

Abstract:Being overweight is already considered a metabolic risk factor, which can be overcome by increasing cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Acute exercise is known to induce changes in plasma hormones and heat shock proteins release. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the impact of body composition and CRF on these variables following acute aerobic exercise. To assess the influence of body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness on plasma heat shock protein 72 kDa (HSP72), norepinephrine (NE), insulin, and glucose responses to an acute aerobic exercise bout in the fed state. Twenty-four healthy male adults were recruited and allocated into three groups: overweight sedentary ( n = 8), normal weight sedentary ( n = 8), and normal weight active ( n = 8). The volunteers performed an acute moderate exercise session on a treadmill at 70% of VO 2 peak. Blood samples were drawn at baseline, immediately post-exercise, and at 1-h post-exercise. The exercise session did not induce changes in HSP72 nor NE but changes in glucose and insulin were affected by body mass index. Also, subjects with elevated CRF maintain reduced NE through exercise. At baseline, the overweight sedentary group showed elevated NE, insulin, and glucose; these last two impacting the HOMA-IR index. Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise at 70% VO 2 peak, in the fed state, did not change the levels of plasma NE and HSP72. Elevated body composition seems to impact metabolic profile and increase sympathetic activity. Conversely, subjects with increased cardiorespiratory fitness seem to have attenuated sympathetic activity.

Abstract:Our purpose was to elucidate effects of acute exercise and training on blood lipids-lipoproteins, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in overweight/obese men (n = 10) and women (n = 8); age, BMI, body fat percentage, and VO(2)max were (mean ± SEM): 45 ± 2.5 years, 31.9 ± 1.4 kg·m(-2), 41.1 ± 1.5%, and 25.2 ± 1.3 mlO(2)·kg(-1)·min(-1). Before exercise training subjects performed an acute exercise session on a treadmill (70% VO(2)max, 400 kcal energy expenditure), followed by 12 weeks of endurance exercise training (land-based or aquatic-based treadmill): 3 sessions·week(-1), progressing to 500 kcal·session(-1) during which subjects maintained accustomed dietary habits. After training, the acute exercise session was repeated. Blood samples, obtained immediately before and 24 h after acute exercise sessions, were analyzed for serum lipids, lipoproteins, and hsCRP adjusted for plasma volume shifts. Exercise training increased VO(2)max (+3.67 mlO(2)·kg(-1)·min(-1), P < 0.001) and reduced body weight (-2.7 kg, P < 0.01). Training increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and HDL(2b)-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations (+3.7 and +2.4 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05) and particle numbers (+588 and +206 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05) in men. In women despite no change in total HDL-C, subfractions shifted from HDL(3)-C (-3.2, P < 0.01) to HDL(2b)-C (+3.5, P < 0.05) and HDL(2a)-C (+2.2 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05), with increased HDL(2b) particle number (+313 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05). Training reduced LDL(3) concentration and particle number in women (-1.6 mg·dl(-1) and -16 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05). Acute exercise reduced the total cholesterol (TC): HDL-C ratio in men (-0.16, P < 0.01) and increased hsCRP in all subjects (+0.05 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05), regardless of training. Training did not affect acute exercise responses. Our data support the efficacy of endurance training, without dietary intervention, to elicit beneficial changes in blood lipids-lipoproteins in obese men and women.

Tissue-Specific Oxidative Stress Modulation by Exercise: A Comparison between MICT and HIIT in an Obese Rat Model

Abstract:Background and aim: Exercise is an effective strategy to reduce obesity-induced oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two training modalities (moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT)) on the pro/antioxidant status of different tissues in obese Zucker rats. Methods: Eight-week-old male Zucker rats (fa/fa, n = 36) were subdivided in three groups: MICT, HIIT, and control (no exercise) groups. Trained animals ran on a treadmill (0° slope), 5 days/week for 10 weeks (MICT: 51 min at 12 m·min-1; HIIT: 6 sets of 3 min at 10 m·min-1 followed by 4 min at 18 m·min-1). Epididymal (visceral) and subcutaneous adipose tissue, gastrocnemius muscle, and plasma samples were collected to measure oxidative stress markers (advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL)), antioxidant system markers (ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities), and prooxidant enzymes (NADPH oxidase and xanthine oxidase (XO) activities, myeloperoxidase content). Results: Compared with the control, MICT increased GPx and catalase activities and the FRAP level in epididymal adipose tissue. HIIT increased the AOPP level in subcutaneous adipose tissue. In the muscle, HIIT increased both SOD and GPx activities and reduced the AOPP level, whereas MICT increased only SOD activity. Finally, plasma myeloperoxidase content was similarly decreased by both training modalities, whereas oxLDL was reduced only in the MICT group. Conclusion: Both HIIT and MICT improved the pro/antioxidant status. However, HIIT was more efficient than MICT in the skeletal muscle, whereas MICT was more efficient in epididymal adipose tissue. This suggests that oxidative stress responses to HIIT and MICT are tissue-specific. This could result in ROS generation via different pathways in these tissues. From a practical point of view, the two training modalities should be combined to obtain a global response in people with obesity.

Abstract:Hypoxia is a recognized inducer of oxidative stress during prolonged physical activity. Nevertheless, previous studies have not systematically examined the effects of normoxia and hypoxia during acute physical exercise. The study is aimed at evaluating the relationship between enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant barrier, total antioxidant/oxidant status, oxidative and nitrosative damage, inflammation, and lysosomal function in different acute exercise protocols under normoxia and hypoxia. Fifteen competitive athletes were recruited for the study. They were subjected to two types of acute cycling exercise with different intensities and durations: graded exercise until exhaustion (GE) and simulated 30 km individual time trial (TT). Both exercise protocols were performed under normoxic and hypoxic ( Fi O 2 = 16.5 % ) conditions. The number of subjects was determined based on our previous experiment, assuming the test power = 0.8 and α = 0.05 . We demonstrated enhanced enzymatic antioxidant systems during hypoxic exercise (GE: ↑ catalase (CAT), ↑ superoxide dismutase; TT: ↑ CAT) with a concomitant decrease in plasma reduced glutathione. In athletes exercising in hypoxia, redox status was shifted in favor of oxidation reactions (GE: ↑ total oxidant status, ↓ redox ratio), leading to increased oxidation/nitration of proteins (GE: ↑ advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ↑ ischemia-modified albumin, ↑ 3-nitrotyrosine, ↑ S-nitrosothiols; TT: ↑ AOPP) and lipids (GE: ↑ malondialdehyde). Concentrations of nitric oxide and its metabolites (peroxynitrite) were significantly higher in the plasma of hypoxic exercisers with an associated increase in inflammatory mediators (GE: ↑ myeloperoxidase, ↑ tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and lysosomal exoglycosidase activity (GE: ↑ N-acetyl-β-hexosaminidase, ↑ β-glucuronidase). Our study indicates that even a single intensive exercise session disrupts the antioxidant barrier and leads to increased oxidative and nitrosative damage at the systemic level. High-intensity exercise until exhaustion (GE) alters redox homeostasis more than the less intense exercise (TT, near the anaerobic threshold) of longer duration ( 20.2 ± 1.9 min vs. 61.1 ± 5.4 min—normoxia; 18.0 ± 1.9 min vs. 63.7 ± 3.0 min—hypoxia), while hypoxia significantly exacerbates oxidative stress, inflammation, and lysosomal dysfunction in athletic subjects.

Abstract:Objective The mean body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of obese and overweight individuals increasing substantially worldwide during the previous three decades. Variation in gut microorganisms might play an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity, but the mechanisms by which gut microbiota promote metabolic disturbances are not well understood. Exercise is associated with altered gut microbial composition, but few studies have investigated whether the gut microbiota and associated metabolites are modulated by exercise training in humans. We explored the impact of 8 weeks aerobic exercise on serum oxidant and anti-oxidant indexes and gut microbiota. Methods All 40 young male volunteers are enrolled in the study, the lean ones (n=11), which BMI≤22 are as control group. And the obese ones (n=29), which BMI > 28 participated in the 8 weeks aerobic exercise. The body weight and BMI of each volunteers were recorded. The serum malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) were measured by ELISA. The composition and diversity of gut microbiota were analyzed with 16S rDNA sequencing. Results 1 Compared with the control, the level of serum GPx, SOD and TAOC decreased significantly (P < 0.001), and the MDA increased significantly (P < 0.001) in the obese group. After the 8 weeks aerobic exercise intervention, the MDA level decreased significantly (P<0.01), the TAOC level increased significantly (P < 0.01), and there were no significant changes in the level of GPX and SOD. 2 Compared with the control, the ratio of Bifidobacteriaceae, Alcaligenaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Verrucomicrobiaceae decreased significantly(p<0.05) in the obese group, and the ratio of Ruminococcaceae, Helicobacteraceae increased significantly (P<0.05). After the 8 weeks aerobic exercise intervention, the ratio of Bifidobacteriaceae, Alcaligenaceae increased significantly (P<0.05),and the ratio of Ruminococcaceae reduced remarkably (p<0.05). The ACE index was significantly increased after the intervention (P < 0.05). 3 Through the correlation analysis of the data above, there was a certain correlation between the serum oxidant/anti-oxidant indexes and gut microbiota composition. After the aerobic exercise, there was a positive correlation between MDA and Ruminococcaceae、TAOC and Bifdobacteriace (P<0.05);a negative correlation between MDA and Bifdobacteriace、TAOC and Ruminococcaceae (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of aerobic exercise, MDA level was negatively correlated with ACE index (r=-0.466,P<0.05). Conclusions 1 Compared with the control, there was a significant increase of serum oxidation index and the serum anti-oxidation index dropped significantly among the obese subjects, which indicated that the accumulation of serum free radicals might be one of the causes of obesity. The 8 weeks aerobic exercise intervention can enhance the antioxidant capacity effectively. 2 Compared with the control, the proportion of Bifidobacteriaceae in the obese group was significantly decreased, and the proportion of the bacteria with direct correlation to obesity, such as Ruminococcaceae increased significantly. 8 weeks aerobic exercise could inverse these changes among the obese subjects, suggested that the improvement of body phenotype of obese subjects was closely related to the effective regulation of their gut microbiota structure.The change of ACE index indicated that aerobic exercise could increase the diversity of gut microbiota. 3 Combined the correlation analysis of gut microbiota diversity index showed that there were tight correlation between the serum oxidant/anti-oxidant indexes and the gut microbiota composition and structure. It might caused metabolic disorders and eventually increased fat accumulation and changed the host body phenotype.

Comparison of Acute Bout of Moderate Intensity and High Intensity Exercise on Oxidative Stress, Inflammatory Markers and Neurocognitive Parameters between Male Athletes and Non-athletes – A Randomized Controlled Study

Abstract:Background and Aim: Physical inactivity and resultant obesity are highly prevalent in the contemporary world. Studies reveal that even an acute bout of physical exercise can bring about health benefits similar to that of regular exercise. Our study aims to assess the effect of single acute bout of exercise on cognition, oxidative stress and inflammatory markers between athletes and non-athletes and to compare the effect of moderate and high intensity exercise on those parameters. Methods: The study is a double-arm parallel design randomized controlled study. Eighty healthy male volunteers (40 athletes and 40 non-athletes) were recruited and further randomized into four subgroups: Athlete moderate-intensity exercise, athlete high-intensity exercise, non-athlete moderate-intensity exercise and non-athlete high-intensity exercise. A single acute bout of treadmill exercise was given to all the subgroups. Cognitive parameters, oxidative stress and inflammatory markers were assessed before and after acute bout of exercise and compared between the groups. Results: At baseline, athletes had reduced oxidative stress and inflammation than non-athletes, which is evident by increased total anti-oxidant status and decreased leptin in athletes, whereas no significant changes in cognitive parameters between the groups. In addition, we found that moderate intensity exercise is superior to high intensity exercise in decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress in both the groups. However, no such changes were observed with respect to cognitive parameters with different intensities of exercise. Conclusion: A single acute bout of exercise is sufficient to improve oxidative and inflammatory parameters in both athletes and non-athletes, whereas cognitive functions does not improve by single acute bout of exercise.
Impacts of obesity and stress on neuromuscular fatigue development and associated heart rate variability

Abstract:Objectives:Obesity and stress are independently associated with decrements in neuromuscular functions. The present study examined the interplay of obesity and stress on neuromuscular fatigue and associated heart rate variability (HRV).Methods:Forty-eight non-obese (18.5<body mass index (BMI)<25 kg m−2) and obese (30⩽BMI) adults performed repetitive handgrip exertions at 30% of their maximum strength until exhaustion in the absence and presence of a mental arithmetic stressor. Dependent measures included gold standard fatigue indicators (endurance time and rate of strength loss), perceived effort and mental demand, heart rate and temporal (RMSSD: root mean square of successive differences between N–N intervals) and spectral (LF/HF: ratio of low to high frequency) indices of HRV.Results:Stress negatively affected endurance time (P<0.0001) and rate of strength loss (P=0.029). In addition, significant obesity × stress interactions were found on endurance time (P=0.0073), rate of strength loss (P=0.027) and perceived effort (P=0.026), indicating that stress increased fatigability, particularly in the obese group. Both obesity (P=0.001) and stress (P=0.033) independently lowered RMSSD. Finally, stress increased LF/HF ratio (P=0.028) and the interaction of stress and obesity (P=0.008) indicated that this was augmented in the obese group.Discussion:The present study provides the first evidence that stress-related neuromuscular fatigue development is accelerated in obese individuals. In addition, the stress condition resulted in poorer HRV indices, which is indicative of autonomic dysfunction, particularly in the obese group. These findings indicate that workers are more susceptible to fatigue in high-stress work environments, particularly those with higher BMI, which can increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries as well as cardiovascular diseases in this population.

Abstract:PurposePentraxin 3 (PTX3) has been shown to be a predictor of endothelial dysfunction in patients with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) (e.g., obesity). Circulating PTX3 concentrations are dysregulated in obese individuals and are elevated following acute aerobic exercise. High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) has been demonstrated to be as effective as continuous moderate-intensity exercise in improving endothelial function, as indicated by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD), in patients with CVD. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of acute HIIE on plasma PTX3 and BAFMD responses in obese individuals.MethodsEight obese and six normal-weight young males participated in acute HIIE (4 intervals of 4 min at 80–90% of VO2max; 3 min of active recovery at 50–60% VO2max). Plasma PTX3 and BAFMD were measured prior to, immediately following exercise, and one and 2 hours into recovery.ResultsPlasma PTX3 concentrations significantly increased following HIIE, yet the PTX3 response to HIIE was significantly blunted in obese compared to normal-weight participants. While the kinetic responses of BAFMD were also significantly different in obese compared to normal-weight participants, similar increases above the baseline were observed 2 hours into recovery in both groups. Finally, plasma PTX3 concentrations were not associated with BAFMD at baseline or in response to HIIE.ConclusionThe utilization of HIIE may serve as a time-efficient exercise prescription strategy to transiently improve endothelial function, independent of elevated plasma PTX3 concentrations, in obese individuals.

Abstract:Physical activity results in oxidative stress, as evidenced by the increased production of reactive oxygen, nitrogen species, and inflammatory mediators. The management of these components is instrumental for antioxidant adaptation to exercise and post-exercise recovery. Therefore, the present report aims to study the antioxidant response to two types of exercise (a 2000 m run and a burpee test) in healthy volunteers after a long period of inactivity (1–2 months). Antioxidant enzyme activities and oxidative stress markers (protein carbonyls and malondialdehyde content) were measured in neutrophils, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and plasma. These parameters were determined under basal conditions and immediately post-exercise. Compared to those in basal state, neutrophil superoxide dismutase (28.3 vs. 22.9 pkat/109 cells), glutathione peroxidase (147.5 vs. 120.1 nkat/109 cells), and catalase (106.3 vs. 57.9 k/109 cells) were activated significantly (p < 0.05) after the burpee test. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells exhibited only significant (p < 0.05) catalase activation (113.6 vs. 89.4 k/109 cells) after the burpee test. Other enzymes, such as glutathione reductase and myeloperoxidase, tended to increase post-exercise, although the differences from baseline were not significant. Finally, compared to basal conditions, the protein carbonyl (24.5 vs. 14.5 mmol/L) and malondialdehyde (39.6 vs. 18.3 mmol/L) contents increased significantly (p < 0.05) in neutrophils and in plasma (115.1 vs. 97.8 and 130.2 vs. 123.4 μmol/L, respectively) after the burpee test. In conclusion, high-intensity exercise seems to induce immediate oxidative stress in inactive individuals, and the acute antioxidant response was slightly greater after the burpee test than after the 2000 m run. Glutathione-dependent antioxidant systems are activated immediately as protective mechanisms.

Abstract:Background Obesity is a widespread medical condition consisting in a BMI > 30 kg/m2. The link between BMI, exercise performance and cardiovascular risk is not well defined on large set of apparently healthy subjects. Aim In this population-based trial of apparently healthy individuals we aimed at defining the exercise gas exchange phenotype by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) according to BMI strata. Methods 932 subjects (54.7% females) presenting with none to five major cardiovascular risk factors (MCVRFs; hypertension, diabetes, tabagism, dyslipidaemia, BMI> 25), underwent CPET and were divided in 3 categories (normal weight; NW, overweight; OW and obese; Ob). Cohort analysis was carried out by dividing and analysing patients into groups based on BMI, sex, and number of MCVRFs. Peak VO2 was considered normal for a predicted value > 80%. Composite endpoint was defined as the combination of the following events: cardiovasular mortality, cardiovascular hospitalization, coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), TAVI (Transcatheter aortic valve implantation), cardiac surgery, acute pulmonary oedema or stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA). Results the number of MCVRFs significantly increased (CI 95%, p-value 0,009) through BMI strata being in NW, OW and Ob 1.6, 2.7, 2.9 respectively. Peak VO2 significantly (CI 95%, p-value <0,001) decreased with rise in BMI (21.8ml/min/kg, 18.7 ml/min/kg, 15.5 ml/min/kg for NW, OW and Ob, respectively; p-value <0,001). A significant correlation between the increase in number of MCRVFs and the decrease in peak VO2 was documented for BMI<30 (-0.44 for NW and -0.30 for OW; p-value <0,001), whereas Ob exhibited the lowest mean peak VO2 which was unaffected by the increasing number of MCVRFs. (figure 1). HRR (Heart rate reserve) was significantly lower in Ob subjects compared to OW and NW (respectively 0.59, 0.68, 0.72 p-value <0,001). Regression models showed that neither risk factors nor CPET variables were predictive for composite endpoint in NW. Interestingly, peak VO2 (OR 0,93 [CI 0,86-0,99] p-value 0,039) and VE/VCO2 slope (OR 1,06 [CI 1,00-1,11] p-value 0,047) were predictive of composite endpoint just in OW with Ob subjects showing similar trend not reaching statistical power; Diabetes was predictive of composite endpoint in Ob cohort. KM curves reported higher event rates in OW subjects with higher VE/VCO2 slope and lower peak VO2. (figure 2) Conclusions As far as obesity is concerned, regardless of the number of MCVRFs, BMI is the single strong determinant of exercise performance and gas exchange phenotype. In OW and NW cohorts, the cumulative number of MCVRFs impacts on worse exercise performance and gas exchange inefficiency. Lower peak VO2 and higher VE/VCO2 slope are predictive of CV composite endpoint in OW and a similar trend was observed in Ob.BMI and peak VO2KM BMI 25-30

Abstract:To better clarify the relationship between physical activity and oxidative stress, we determined the effects of a maximal test in 18 young subjects with different training levels (six professional Athletes and 12 non-agonists (NA)). Redox homeostasis (total antioxidant activity (TAS), vitamin C and glutathione (GSH)), oxidative damage (diene conjugation and hemolysis), lymphocyte cell death and repair systems (apoptosis, micronuclei and Hsp70 expression) were evaluated. We found that agonistic training led to a chronic oxidative insult (high baseline values of oxidized glutathione (GSSG), micronuclei and hemolysis). On the contrary, NA with the lowest level of training frequency showed a well balanced profile at rest, but they were more susceptible to exercise-induced variations (GSSG/GSH and diene increased values), respect to the NA with an higher level of training. As almost all the parameters employed in this study showed inter-individual variations, the GSSG/GSH ratio remains the most sensitive and reliable marker of oxidative stress, accordingly with other data just reported in the literature.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of manipulating hypoxic severity with low-intensity exercise on glucose regulation in healthy overweight adults. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, 14 males with overweight (age: 27 ± 5 years; body mass index (BMI) 27.1 ± 1.8 kg⋅m 2 ) completed three exercise trials involving 60 min aerobic exercise cycling at 90% lactate threshold in normoxia (NM, FiO 2 = 20.9%), moderate hypoxia (MH, FiO 2 = 16.5%) and high hypoxia (HH, FiO 2 = 14.8%). A post-exercise oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. Venous blood samples were analyzed for incremental area under the curve (iAUC), plasma glucose and insulin, as well as exerkine concentrations (plasma apelin and fibroblast growth factor 21 [FGF-21]) pre- and post-exercise. A 24-h continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) was used to determine interstitial glucose concentrations. Heart rate, oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) and perceptual measures were recorded during exercise. Results: Post-exercise OGTT iAUC for plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were lower in MH vs. control ( p = 0.02). Post-exercise interstitial glucose iAUC, plasma apelin and FGF-21 were not different between conditions. Heart rate was higher in HH vs. NM and MH, and MH vs. NM ( p < 0.001), while SpO 2 was lower in HH vs. NM and MH, and MH vs. NM ( p < 0.001). Overall perceived discomfort and leg discomfort were higher in HH vs. NM and MH ( p < 0.05), while perceived breathing difficulty was higher in HH vs. NM only ( p = 0.003). Conclusion: Compared to higher hypoxic conditions, performing acute aerobic-based exercise under moderate hypoxia provided a more effective stimulus for improving post-exercise glucose regulation while concomitantly preventing excessive physiological and perceptual stress in healthy overweight adults.

Abstract:A physical exercise program is one of the commonly used methods for improving an individual's antioxidative capacity. However, an inappropriate physical exercise program would induce extra oxidative stress (OS), and the relationship between the details of a physical exercise protocol and the severity of intracellular OS is still unclear. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials were conducted by searching PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science with the eligibility criteria: (1) participants over 18 years old; (2) physical exercise interventions; (3) 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, F2-isoprostanes, and protein carbonyls (PCs) as outcome measures; (4) published in English and peer-reviewed. 12 studies were included, and the data of 8 in them were pooled together. The agreement between authors reached a kappa value of 0.73. The results of the meta-analysis showed that: (1) the level of OS did not depend on the absolute intensity of physical exercise but on both the intensity and the volume of exercise; (2) high-intensity aerobic exercise (HIAE) and a combined protocol of HIAE and resistance training had the highest potential to induce large OS in unhealthy people; (3) the OS induced by moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise was significantly larger than that induced by ordinary life activities in healthy adults; (4) high-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise had the lowest and sub-lowest probabilities to induce high intracellular OS for unhealthy adults. activities induce OS in various tissues in the human body, and the severity of OS depends on many factors of physical exercises as well as the health condition of an individual. A high-intensity and high-volume physical exercise program has the largest possibility of inducing severe OS, while a moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program and a high-intensity interval training program with a relatively low volume might be beneficial to the redox balance for unhealthy individuals. In conclusion, continuous aerobic exercise under moderate-intensity or high-intensity interval training could be recommended to enhance the body's capacity for maintaining redox balance, especially for unhealthy individuals. Abstract:Background: A high minute ventilation/rate of carbon dioxide production (V̇ E /V̇CO 2 ) slope during exercise (i.e., ventilatory ineffciency) is more common in patients with cardiovascular disease and is prognostic of cardiovascular mortality. Interestingly, recent data in adults with obesity suggest that V̇ E /V̇CO 2 slopes are lower with higher body mass index (BMI) values in the context of adults with and without comorbidities. However, it is unclear whether obesity is associated with V̇ E /V̇CO 2 slope in adults without comorbidities. Therefore, we used the Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise National Database (FRIEND) to test the hypothesis that adults with obesity would have a reduced V̇ E /V̇CO 2 slope compared with adults without obesity in the context of no known comorbidities. Methods: We used the CDC definition for obesity as a BMI of ≥30 kg/m 2 . We excluded those with known chronic disease, smoking status, or any medication use. We only included adults with a respiratory exchange ratio >1.00 at peak exercise. All data are presented as median[IQR] because they failed Shapiro-Wilk normality tests ( p>0.05). For our primary analyses, we compared groups using a Mann-Whitney U test (unadjusted) and linear regression adjusted for age, sex, and race (cardiorespiratory fitness was not a significant covariate). We set α a priori to <0.05. Results: The sample (n=3588) characteristics were as follows: 1) age = 40[18] years (range 18-91 years); 2) 20% female; 3) 0.4% American Indian, 3% Asian, 14% Black, 8% Hispanic, 3% Other, 66% White, and 5% Unknown; 4) cardiorespiratory fitness = 27.8[10.8] mLO 2 ·kg −1 ·min −1 ; and 5) 17% with obesity. As expected, BMI was different between groups (obese: 32.1[3.0], non-obese: 24.6[4.0] kg/m 2 , rank biserial correlation[r bc ]=1.00, p<0.001). The V̇ E /V̇̇CO 2 slope was higher in adults with obesity (obese: 25.0[3.5], non-obese: 24.7[3.6], r bc =0.07, p=0.009). Obesity was a significant predictor of the V̇̇ E /V̇̇CO 2 slope (standard error of the estimate: 0.16 [95% CI 0.09-0.70], p=0.01) after covariate adjustment (model: R 2 =0.174, F 4,3583 =188, p<0.001). BMI was also related to the V̇ E /V̇̇CO 2 slope (ρ=0.07, p<0.001). Finally, the proportion of V̇̇ E /V̇̇CO 2 slope values >45 was not different between groups (obese: 0.2%, non-obese: 0.3%, X 2 =0.48, p=0.49). Conclusion: In contrast to our hypothesis, data from the FRIEND indicate that those with obesity exhibit mildly greater ventilatory ineffciency during exercise than those without obesity in the context of no known comorbidities. Abstract:Supplementing with antioxidants may be one of the most efficient means of minimizing oxidative stress during workouts in obese individuals. The aim of this study is to identify the results after twelve weeks of CrossFit workouts combined with Spinach thylakoid extract on the levels of insulin resistance (insulin and Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance [HOMA-IR]), fasting blood sugar (FBS), malondialdehyde (MDA), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in obese males. Sixty-eight males with an average age of 27 ± 8 yrs and a BMI of 32.6 ± 2.6 kg.m- 2 were randomly split into four groups each consisting of seventeen individuals. : control group (CG), supplement group (SG), training group (TG), and training + supplement group (TSG). After initial assessments, the two training groups (TG and TSG) started on a 12 weeks of the CrossFit workouts program involving three sessions per week each lasting up to 60 min. Participants in supplement groups ingested 30 min before lunch, 5 gof Spinach thylakoid extract per day or one sachet of raw corn starch in the control group. Baseline and post-intervention measurements were performed 48 h pre- and post-last session, respectively. The findings revealed noteworthy relationships between the exercise groups and timefor TAC, SOD, GPx, MDA, CK, and LDH (p < 0.001, ES: 0.88, 0.88, 0.8, 0.4, 0.7, and 0.7, respectively). In addition, there were statistically significant differences among study groups after attending the intervention program in TAC (ES: 0.88), SOD (ES: 0.92), GPX (ES: 0.85), MDA (ES: 0.5), CK (ES: 0.7) and LDH (ES: 0.8). The effect sizes of insulin (0.77), glucose (0.21), and HOMA-IR (0.44) varied significantly (p < 0.05) among the groups. The results demonstrated that CrossFit workouts for 12 weeks combined with Spinach thylakoid extract in men with obesity may prevent oxidative damage caused by obesity and CrossFit workouts.
