Abstract:Context: Because of the increasing popularity of participation in Irish dance, the incidence of lower limb injuries is high among this competitive population. Objective: To investigate the effects of fatigue on the peak lower limb and trunk angles as well as the peak lower limb joint forces and moments of competitive female Irish dancers during the performance of a dance-specific single-limb landing. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Patients or other participants: Fourteen healthy, female, competitive Irish dancers (age = 19.4 ± 3.7 years, height = 165.3 ± 5.9 cm, mass = 57.9 ± 8.2 kg). Intervention(s): Participants performed an Irish dance-specific leap before and after a dance-specific fatigue protocol. During each landing movement, 3-dimensional lower limb kinematics (250 Hz) and ground reaction forces (1000 Hz) were collected. Paired t tests were performed to determine the differences (P ≤ .05) in lower limb and trunk biomechanics prefatigue and postfatigue. Main outcome measure(s): Peak lower limb and trunk angles as well as peak lower limb joint reaction forces and external moments. Results: Compared with the prefatigue trials, dancers landed with reduced ankle plantar flexion (P = .003) and hip external rotation (P = .007) and increased hip-adduction alignment (P = .034) postfatigue. Dancers displayed greater anterior shear (P = .003) and compressive (P = .024) forces at the ankle and greater external knee-flexion moments (P = .024) during the postfatigue compared with the prefatigue landing trials. Conclusions: When fatigued, dancers displayed a decline in landing performance in terms of aesthetics as well as increased ankle- and knee-joint loading, potentially exposing them to a greater risk of injuries.

Abstract:in this rejection of sex, but it is unwise to overstate this. Indeed practical experience leads one to the belief that individuals with built-in problems seek religious sanction for their prejudices rather than that a religious attitude discourages a healthy sexual outlook. Traumatic early experiences can certainly lead to difficulties, particularly in those predisposed by a low sexual drive. A clear example of this was the young man whose first sexual experience was with a prostitute, an experience, it was arranged, to be shared with three friends for reasons of economy. He was the lucky, or unlucky, companion who was deputed to be first. His inexperience, combined with the encouraging comments of his friends through the closed door, ensured his lack of success and his subsequent impotence. Latent or overt homosexuals may well be found suffering from primary impotence with a female partner. Here too, of course, family background may be significant. As with the other problems already considered, analysis of the problem and re-education to a more healthy regard for sex are most important. Specific stimulation by the female partner may be of value, but it is unwise to expect too much of this approach. Often "like marries like," and a couple may be content to live without intercourse by mutual consent until perhaps their friends or relatives question them about lack of a family. In such circumstances complete success for any form of therapy is rare. Even if successful intercourse and pregnancy are achieved, such couples rarely feel the need or indeed obtain any great satisfaction from their physical relationship.
Assessment of fatigue and recovery in elite cheerleaders prior to and during the ICU World Championships

Abstract:Introduction: Little is known about the demands of competitive cheerleading. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess fatigue and recovery during preparation for world championships. Methods: Fifteen participants from the German senior "All-Girl" and "Coed" national teams (nine males and six women) were recruited. Data were collected during the final preparation (T1 -T7) and competition days (C1 -C2). Heart rate variability (HRV) and resting heart rate (HR) were measured every morning. Data on training load, recovery, and stress (Short Scale for Recovery and Stress) were surveyed after training. Countermovement jump height (CMJ), sit-and-reach, and exercise-induced muscle damage (EMID) scores were taken in the afternoon. Results: There was a practically relevant decrease in CMJ (T2, T6). A trend for HR to increase (T5-C2) and HRV to decrease (T4, T6-C2) was evident. Through training, recovery decreased and recovered as C1 approached (mental performance: T2-T4 p = 0.004; T2-C1 p = 0.029; T3-T4 p = 0.029; emotional balance: T3-T4 p = 0.023; T3-C1 p = 0.014; general recovery status T1-T3 p = 0.008; T3-T4 p = 0.024; T3-C1 p = 0.041), whereas stress increased during the first days and returned to normal before C1 (emotional dysbalance: T2-T4 p = 0.014; T2-C1 p = 0.009; T3-T4 p = 0.023; T3-C1 p = 0.014). EMID scores increased for the upper and lower body between T3, T5-T7 (p ≤ 0.036) and T3, T6-T7 (p ≤ 0.047), respectively. Discussion: Pre-competition training led to substantial fatigue, and most markers indicate that athletes do not compete fully recovered. This could possibly be avoided by optimizing the training load or implementing recovery strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Safe and proper landings are crucial elements of gymnastics events. Long-term training leads to specific neuromuscular adaptations which are yet to be explored in terms of gymnastic landings. The aim of the study was to assess differences in landings’ neuromuscular characteristics between gymnasts at three subsequent gymnastic training stages and age-matched non-athletes. Forty-six gymnasts (G) and 58 controls (C) performed countermovement jumps on a force plate with simultaneous surface electromyography (SEMG) of lower body muscles, measured during the pre-(100 ms) and post-landing phase (0-100 and 0-200 ms). Three age groups participated in the study: 8–10 (G1, C1), 12–14 (G2, C2), 18–25 (G3, C3) years. Analysis included the normalized root mean square (NRMS) SEMG signal and ground reaction forces (GRFs). Gymnasts achieved 13% higher values (p = 0.04) of relative peak GRFs in comparison with controls. It was especially seen in 8–10-year-olds: G1 presented 33% higher (p = 0.03) results than C1 and G2. In SEMG analysis, gymnasts showed overall lower NRMS values in comparison with the controls. In the pre-landing phase, the NRMS in the rectus femoris was from 1.6 up to 3.4 times higher for C1 (p = 0.02) than for C2, G2, C3, and G3. Gymnasts across subsequent training stages exhibit different patterns of neuromuscular coordination during landings. The highest GRF observed in the youngest gymnasts may be a potential risk factor of injuries. Therefore, further injury-focused investigation is recommended to monitor landing strategies among gymnasts of different stages with particular emphasis on the beginners.

Abstract:Rapid jump-landing is an important performance determinant across sports. While the jump is important for performance, the preceding landing may expose athletes to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. ‘Safe’ landing techniques are promoted to minimise injury risk, however it is important that these are not detrimental to subsequent jumping performance. This study determined whether there is a relationship between biomechanical factors associated with ACL loading or injury risk and jump performance during a bilateral drop vertical jump. Thirty-two female sub-elite netball players had three-dimensional (3D) data recorded from a bilateral drop vertical jump task. 3D hip, knee and ankle joint rotations, 3D knee joint moments, and 3D ground reaction forces (GRFs) were extracted from the landing phase of the task. Jump height, ground contact time and peak power output were extracted from the jumping phase of the task. One-dimensional statistical parametric mapping (p < 0.0011) was used to investigate the relationship between the landing and jumping phases. Greater knee internal rotation moments and higher GRFs during landing were associated with reduced jump height. Greater hip and knee flexion, reduced hip internal rotation and knee abduction, and a more dorsiflexed/less plantarflexed ankle position at initial contact during landing were associated with longer ground contact times. Certain biomechanical factors commonly targeted within ACL injury prevention programs were associated with both poorer and better jump performance. The links between landing technique and jumping performance suggest jump performance training should be considered in parallel with landing injury prevention programs.

Abstract:Objectives: The ability to control landings and stabilize quickly is essential in sports like gymnastics and cheerleading, where landing quality impacts scores. The similarities and contrasts between these sports, where one trains primarily barefoot and the other shod, may increase understanding of the kinetic role of the foot during landings. Design: Sixteen gymnasts (GYM), sixteen cheerleaders (CHR), and sixteen non-athletes (NAT) performed single-foot shod and barefoot drop landings onto a force plate. Method: Foot muscle strength was assessed using a custom test and ultrasound imaging was used to measure six foot muscles. Group differences in muscle sizes and strength measurements were compared using one-way ANOVAs (α = 0.05). Landing mechanics metrics were evaluated using 3 x 2 between-within ANOVAs (α = 0.05). Pairwise comparisons were made using Tukey post-hoc tests. Results: Barefoot landings resulted in greater peak vertical ground reaction force (pVGRF) and lower time to pVGRF (TTpVGRF). Significant group main effect differences were found between GYM and NAT for all kinetic measures (GYM: shorter time to stability (TTS) and TTpVGRF, and greater pVGRF), while no significant differences in landing kinetics were found between CHR and either GYM or NAT. No interactions were found between group and condition. GYM and CHR had significantly greater summed foot muscle size than NAT, however, only CHR displayed significantly greater toe flexion force than NAT. Conclusions: Our data suggests that while wearing shoes does not affect groups differently, footwear reduces initial peak VGRFs but does not influence later stabilization times.

Abstract:This paper assessed the weighted vest load arrangement and data normalization method effects on ground reaction forces (GRF), joint kinematics, and joint kinetics during the landing portion of the countermovement jump. Vertical GRF and sagittal kinematic data were obtained from 12 males and 12 females during countermovement jump-landings in 4 different loading arrangements (unloaded, 10% body mass load placed anteriorly, posteriorly, and split anterior/posterior). Two methods (body mass vs. mass*landing height) were used to normalize joint torques to determine whether common mass-normalization (type A) yielded different results than a jump-landing specific mass*landing height normalization (type B) in statistical significance. Mixed-model analyses of variance (α=0.05) and effect sizes (ES) were used to assess differences between sexes and loading conditions for each normalization method. Results show that for normalization A, significant statistical differences were found between sexes for peak vertical GRF, hip moment, and knee moment. Pooled sex peak vertical GRF and hip moments showed significant differences when comparing the unloaded with the back and front-loaded conditions. For normalization B, the peak vertical GRF also showed significant differences between men and women but with smaller effect sizes. Only the hip moment showed significant differences for both normalization methods but changed the magnitude of its effect sizes. Results suggest that different normalization methods could be considered for joint moments or GRF depending on the nature of the statistical significance of jump height.

Abstract:Artistic gymnasts are frequently exposed to both low- and high-magnitude loads through impacts with the apparatus. These impact loads are thought to be associated with the high injury rates observed in gymnastics. Due to the variable apparatus and surfaces in gymnastics, impact loads during training are difficult to quantify. This study aimed to use triaxial accelerometers mounted on the back to assess impact loading during jumping and landing tasks. Twelve participants were fitted with an accelerometer on their upper and lower back, before performing a continuous hopping task, as well as drop landings and rebound jumps from various heights (37.5, 57.5, and 77.5 cm) onto a force platform. Peak resultant acceleration (PRA) was low-pass filtered with four cut-off frequencies (8, 15, 20, and 50 Hz). Filtering of PRA with the 20 Hz cut-off frequency showed the highest correlations between ground reaction force (GRF) and PRA. PRA recorded at the upper back, filtered with a 20 Hz cut-off frequency, appears to provide a good estimate of impact loading for continuous hopping and rebound jumps, but less so for drop landings since correlations between GRF and PRA were only significant when landing from 57.5 cm.

Abstract:Most injuries that dancers sustain are to the lower extremities, specifically the foot and ankle region. Numerous potential risk factors have been examined for dancer injuries such as technical mistakes and fatigue. The purpose of this study was to compare landing kinematics and kinetics during jumps that are common in dance pre and postfatigue. Ten adolescent advanced level dancers participated in this study. Subjects completed 3 split leaps and 3 center leaps before and after a fatigue protocol performed on a stationary bike. Live motion capture was used to record landing kinematic and kinetic data. Results of this study showed a significant increase in ankle eversion and external rotation angles for center leaps from pre- to postfatigue protocol ( P = .020 and P = .020, respectively) as well as significant increases in ankle eversion and knee adduction moments for center leaps ( P = .020 and P = .036, respectively). These results show that after a fatigue protocol, there are changes to the kinematics of dancers that may make them more susceptible to ankle injury.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the associations between peak plantarflexion ankle joint moments and vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF) during jump landings, and static ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), three-dimensional ankle excursions, and lower extremity strength in professional ballet dancers. Twenty-seven professional ballet dancers volunteered to participate (men = 14, women = 13). Participants attended one data collection session to measure dorsiflexion ROM and isometric lower extremity strength. Two further sessions were used to establish ankle mechanics and vGRFs during countermovement jump landings in seven foot positions, via a seven-camera motion capture system and piezoelectric force platform. Two linear mixed-effects models were used to investigate associations between the target variables and strength, dorsiflexion ROM, and ankle excursions. Dancer identification, sex, and foot position were entered as random effects. Model fit, when considered independent of random effects, was generally poor with the predictor variables explaining little of the variance of peak plantarflexion ankle joint moments (R 2 = 0.02) or vGRF (R 2 = 0.01). Model fit improved when random effects were considered (R 2 = 0.65 & 0.34). Frontal plane ankle excursion was the only predictor variable with a significant negative association with peak plantarflexion ankle joint moments ( p = .016), although coefficient estimates were small. Strength, static ankle dorsiflexion ROM, and three-dimensional ankle excursions are poor predictors of load experienced at a joint and system level in professional ballet dancers. Differences between individuals, sex, and foot position may be better indicators of the load experienced during jump landings.

Effects of a 2-hour cheerleading practice on dynamic postural stability, knee laxity, and hamstring extensibility

Abstract:Study design: One group; pretest, posttest design. Objective: To assess the effect of a 2-hour cheerleading practice on the anterior knee laxity, hamstring extensibility, and dynamic postural stability (preferred stance leg during vision-denied unilateral stance) of 17 nonimpaired members of a college cheerleading team (8 females, 9 males; 18-25 years old). Background: Anterior knee laxity and hamstring extensibility increase following exercise. The relationship between exercise induced anterior knee laxity, hamstring extensibility, and dynamic postural stability, however, has not been examined. Methods and measures: Pre- and postpractice measurements were compared using paired t tests and Bonferroni's correction for multiple comparisons. A 3 x 2 analysis of variance (force level applied to the arthrometer by condition) and Tukey honest significant difference post hoc test were used to evaluate specific arthrometer force level by condition effects (P < .05). Results: Mean laxity at 133 N and hamstring extensibility increased (mean +/- SD) 1.5 +/- 1 mm and 3 +/- 4 degrees, respectively, following practice. Mean medial-lateral stabiliometer platform angulation (frontal plane position) moved medially following practice (2.9 +/- 3 degrees) and produced a weak correlation with increased knee laxity (r = 0.58). Hamstring extensibility did not significantly relate to stabiliometry or knee laxity variables. Conclusions: The relationship between the medially directed platform angulation and the increase in anterior knee laxity following cheerleading practice suggests a relationship between subtalar joint position and anterior cruciate ligament strain.
Upper and lower limb impact loading during artistic gymnastics foundation floor tumbling skills

Abstract:The floor apparatus is associated with the highest rate of injury for male and female gymnasts in training and competition. This study aims to determine the magnitude of the upper and lower body impact loading when performing foundation floor tumbling skills and sequences. Fourteen sub‐elite artistic gymnasts (male, n = 9; female, n = 5) performed eight tumbling skills and sequences while wearing four inertial measurement units (IMU; upper back, lower back, forearm, and tibia). The peak resultant acceleration (PRA) during all ground contacts was calculated. The forearm and upper back PRA were analyzed for hand contacts, while the lower back and tibia PRA were analyzed for foot contacts. Descriptive statistics (median and inter‐quartile range), Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests and Friedman's ANOVA were calculated between IMU positions and gymnastics skills. Distal IMUs (forearm and tibia) recorded significantly higher loading than proximal IMUs (upper and lower back) for all ground contacts. Proximal IMUs experienced dampening due to shock attenuation properties of the human body, as these positions are located further away from the impact site. Additionally, some foundation skills exposed gymnasts to higher loading when the skill was performed separately, while other skills exposed gymnasts to higher loading when the skill was performed in a tumbling sequence. Training foundation skills separately and as a part of a tumbling sequence exposes the upper and lower body structures to high levels of impact loading. These results can be used by coaches to help in the design of safe training programs.

Abstract:Abstract Study aim : To investigate the effect of fatigue, induced by a volleyball training game on the risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury. Material and methods : Thirteen female volleyball college athletes, ages 18 to 21 years old, completed jump landings from a box 30 cm height, prior and post a 60-minute volleyball training game. The clinical tool Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) was employed in order to evaluate the technique of landing prior and post the game. The level of fatigue induced by the volleyball game was assessed by vertical jump test and Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale pre and post-game. In order to compare measurements pre and post-game t-tests for dependent samples were used. Results : Participants performed lower vertical jumps post-game with a Confidence Interval of 26.2 ± 2.3 cm (pre-game) and 24.9 ± 2.2 cm (post game). The difference between pre and post-game was found to be statistically significant with a t 12 = 2.55 and a p-value of 0.026. In the case of assessing fatigue, the Borg RPE scale scores were found to be statistically significant (t 12 = 14.05, p < 0.001) higher post-game (10.2 ± 0.6), as compared to pre-game (6.5 ± 0.4). Similarly, LESS scores increased significantly (t 12 = 2.21, p = 0.047), post-game (6.3 ± 1.1) compared to pre-game (5.8 ± 1.0) that prove poorer landing ability. Conclusion : It seems that a short duration volleyball training game induces fatigue and negatively affects the jumping and landing ability.
The impact of landing forces on repeated jumping performance

Abstract:Background: High-velocity concentric actions can be negatively impacted by cumulative fatigue during plyometric training. Reducing vertical ground reaction forces (GRF) upon landing could decrease eccentric demands, potentially minimizing fatigue, maintaining concentric performance, and benefiting concentric training adaptations. Therefore, this study examined the effect of intentionally higher and lower landing vertical GRF on the ability to sustain concentric jumping performance. Methods: Twenty men (25.2±3.5 years) performed 30 maximal effort jumps over a 50 cm hurdle (high-landing GRF) and onto a 50 cm box (low-landing GRF), on two separate occasions in a counter-balanced order. Jumps were measured using two force platforms (one for takeoff and one for landing) and a linear position transducer. The 30 jumps were divided into 5 groups of 6 repetitions, and the mean value for each group was analyzed. Results: There was no significant condition × repetition group interaction for any parameters, indicating that the greater landing GRF during hurdle jumps did not negatively affect concentric jump performance throughout the 30 jumps. Concentric velocities and jump height were significantly greater during box jumps compared to hurdle jumps. Conclusions: Thirty maximal-effort jumps did not cause fatigue-related decrease of performance, independent of jump type (i.e., the magnitude of landing GRF). Although, reduced vertical GRF upon landing appears to have a neutral-to-positive effect on concentric jumping performance. Therefore, reducing landing GRF, such as by using BJs, could acutely augment jumping performance and help to reduce cumulative training load.
Ground Reaction Forces in Ballet Differences Resulting from Footwear and Jump Conditions

Abstract:In the research devoted to ballet, ground reaction force (GRF) and shoe condition have been identified as possible risk factors for injury. Shoe conditions vary immensely between dancers and could indeed have significant impact on biomechanics and injury rates. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: 1. to investigate the maximal ground reaction force (GRFmax) when ballet dancers land from two jump conditions in pointe shoes, in flat technique shoes, and barefoot; and 2. to explore the effects that specific pointe shoe characteristics (shoe age, shank style) have on GRFmax. Twenty-one healthy female ballet majors in an elite college program volunteered for the study. All participants had similar years of classical ballet training (12.85 ± 2.37). For the study, they performed two ballet jumps, assemblé and grand jeté. Each jump was performed in the three shoe conditions mentioned previously. A total of 18 trials per subject were completed, with the order of jump type and shoe condition randomized. Each jump was landed on a force plate, and maximal GRFs were recorded. A repeated measures analysis of variance was calculated with two within subject factors, shoe type at three levels and jump type at two levels. Tukey's post hoc test was applied to significant findings. Alpha level was set a priori at p = 0.05. Results demonstrated no significant differences in GRFmax between the three shoe conditions; however, significant differences in GRFmax between the jump types were identified. Post-hoc testing revealed that when dancers performed the grand jeté jump, higher GRFmax was obtained compared to the assemblé jump. In conclusion, results of this study indicate that GRFmax varies between ballet jumps; however, it does not appear that shoe condition significantly affects GRFmax.
Epidemiology of cheerleading injuries presenting to NEISS hospitals from 2002 to 2007

Abstract:Background: Cheerleading has developed into a complex sport utilizing aspects of dance, gymnastics/tumbling, single- and multiple-partner stunts, and tosses in complex displays. Stunting and tosses elevates one or multiple participants into the air supported by teammates putting all at significant injury risk. Methods: We reviewed all cheerleading injuries captured by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 2002 to 2007 that presented to US Emergency Departments and used the new narrative feature added in 2002 to better differentiate injury context and severity. Results: There were 4,245 cases of cheerleaders presenting to National Electronic Injury Surveillance System Emergency Departments from 2002 to 2007 with an average age of 14.6 years, and 96.3% were female. Most of these injuries could be treated as outpatients (97.9%). The extremities were most likely affected, 2,610 (61.5%), with further distribution breakdown as follows: upper extremity 1,339 (31.5%), lower extremity 1,271 (29.9%), head and neck 1,085 (25.6%), trunk 491 (11.6%), and other 48.0 (1.1%). The type of injury sustained in descending order is as follows: sprains/strains 1,871 (44.1%), fractures 709 (16.7%), and contusions 684 (16.1%). The most common mechanism of injury was a collision between two or more cheerleaders (1,242; 29.3% overall), followed by stunting (841; 19.8% overall), tumbling (478, 11.3% overall), and tossing (105, 2.5% overall). Subset analysis was performed on fracture, admit, and severe injury groups. Conclusions: The upper extremity was the most commonly injured part of the body and sustained a significantly greater number of fractures. However, head injuries were more likely to be severe. The value of a more detailed database specific to cheerleading could be invaluable in identifying risk factors and activity-specific injury patterns and facilitate implementing safety measures. Abstract:Background: Post-performance verbal and visual feedback based on data collected via lab-based instruments have been shown to improve landing patterns related to non-contact ACL injury. Biomechanical methods are often complex, difficult to transport and utilize in field settings, and costly, which limits their use for injury prevention. Developing systems that can readily provide feedback outside of the lab setting may support large scale use of feedback training for ACL injury prevention. Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a single training session using a custom portable feedback training system that provides performance cues to promote changes in impact kinetics and lower extremity position during landing in female athletes. Study design: Repeated measures. Methods: One hundred fifty female athletes (ages 13-18 years old) landed from a 50 cm platform with and without feedback related to vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), vGRF symmetry and lower extremity position. Feedback was provided via a portable, low-cost system that included two custom-built force plates interfaced with a digital camera. Each athlete performed six pre-test trials followed by two blocks of six trials where they received visual feedback from the training system and individualized verbal cues from an investigator. Following training blocks, athletes completed six post-test trials without feedback and then six dual-task trials where a ball was randomly thrown to the performer during the landing (transfer task). vGRF and knee to ankle (K:A) separation ratio were measured and the average responses were reported for each trial block. Results: Differences in vGRF between baseline, post-test and transfer task trial blocks were observed (F(2,298)=181.68, p < .0001). Mean (SD) peak vGRF (body weight) were 4.43 (0.90), 3.28 (0.61), and 3.80 (0.92), respectively. Differences in K:A ratio between baseline, post-test and transfer task trial blocks were shown (F(2,298)=68.47, p < .0001). Mean (SD) K:A ratio were 0.87 (0.21), 0.98 (0.19), and 0.92 (0.19), respectively. Conclusion: A portable feedback system may be effective in reducing peak vGRFs and promoting a more desirable K:A ratio during landing and transfer task landing in adolescent female athletes.
