Abstract:We evaluated two experimenter-delivered, small-group word reading programs among at-risk poor readers in Grade 1 classes of regular elementary schools using a two-arm, dual-site-matched control trial intervention. At-risk poor word readers (n = 201) were allocated to either (a) Direct Mapping and Set-for-Variability (DMSfV) or (b) Current or Best-Practices small-group reading programs, typically for 10–11 hr over 10 weeks. Students were matched on baseline reading and language abilities, parent demographic measures, and observed regular classroom teaching quality. Results of hierarchical data modeling showed advantages for the DMSfV program (p < .05 for word reading and spelling at posttest and word reading and sentence comprehension at 5-month delayed posttest), with discernible valued added for the DMSfV condition across all follow-up measures. Results support the use of small-group preventative literacy intervention models that teach both direct mapping of grapheme–phoneme correspondences in text and set-for-variability.

Abstract:Vocabulary is a critical building block for establishing mastery of content area knowledge. Two technology-based tools (InferCabulary and Content Acquisition Podcasts for Students [CAP-S]) have been found to have beneficial effects on students’ vocabulary knowledge, but efficacy of device features across varied presentation formats is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare InferCabulary and CAP-S on four measures of vocabulary performance. Fifth-grade students (n = 656) drawn from 30 classrooms across three states participated in one of three conditions to learn 100 new vocabulary terms. Teachers ( n = 30) taught student participants new word meanings via the InferCabulary program, CAP-S instructional slides, or their business-as-usual (BAU) approach to instruction. Results indicate that when students learned vocabulary using InferCabulary or CAP-S approaches, they significantly outperformed their peers who participated in BAU vocabulary instruction. In addition, students with disabilities in the CAP-S and InferCabulary conditions scored similarly to students without disabilities in the BAU condition on most measures. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Reading instruction for middle- and high-school students is focused on vocabulary and comprehension, yet research suggests that comprehension skills among these students are alarmingly low. Small-group reading interventions are becoming more prevalent in schools, but there are few studies regarding small-group reading comprehension interventions. The current study compared the effectiveness and efficiency of two evidence-based small-group interventions for struggling eighth-grade readers. All participants received a text previewing comprehension strategy and a keyword preteaching strategy in counterbalanced order. Results suggested similar effectiveness between the two strategies but efficiency greatly favored the keyword strategy. Directions for future research are included.
Visual and phonological processing of words: a comparison of good and poor readers

Abstract:At the beginning of the school year, 80 first graders, half receiving phonics instruction and half receiving whole word instruction, were asked to spell, read aloud, and recognize 60 regular and exception words. A standardized reading test and phoneme segmentation test were also administered. Those above grade level in reading excelled in phonological recording and application of grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules and were weaker in utilization of visual-orthographic knowledge. Those below grade level applied visual more than phonological coding and benefited from the visual-orthographic knowledge available in a clue word. Results support a continuum of visual and phonological analysis skills in first-grade reading consistent with Frith's (1985) logographic, alphabetic, and orthographic skill levels.

Abstract:This randomized-control trial examined the learning of preservice teachers taking an initial Early Literacy course in an early childhood education program and of the kindergarten or first grade students they tutored in their field experience. Preservice teachers were randomly assigned to one of two tutoring programs: Book Buddies and Tutor Assisted Intensive Learning Strategies (TAILS), which provided identical meaning-focused instruction (shared book reading), but differed in the presentation of code-focused skills. TAILS used explicit, scripted lessons, and the Book Buddies required that code-focused instruction take place during shared book reading. Our research goal was to understand which tutoring program would be most effective in improving knowledge about reading, lead to broad and deep language and preparedness of the novice preservice teachers, and yield the most successful student reading outcomes. Findings indicate that all preservice teachers demonstrated similar gains in knowledge, but preservice teachers in the TAILS program demonstrated broader and deeper application of knowledge and higher self-ratings of preparedness to teach reading. Students in both conditions made similar comprehension gains, but students tutored with TAILS showed significantly stronger decoding gains.

Abstract:Inexpensive software applications designed to teach reading, writing, mathematics, and other academic areas have become increasingly popular. Although previous research has demonstrated the potential efficacy of such applications, there is a paucity of research that compares applications instruction (AI) with traditional teacher-directed instruction (TDI), and the relative effectiveness and efficiency of these instructional approaches remains largely unknown. This study used an alternating treatment design to compare academic engagement and outcomes (i.e., word identification and reading fluency) during an AI condition and a TDI condition for four students with learning disabilities (LD) attending a charter school. Instructional conditions (i.e., TDI, AI) were randomly alternated 7 times each, for a total of 14 instructional sessions. Results indicated that both approaches fostered high levels of engagement although students were more engaged during AI. With regard to academic performance, visual and quantitative analysis suggest that TDI was more effective than AI in terms of passage fluency and word identification. Students completed social validity rating scales to examine instructional preference. Results indicated that both approaches, TDI and AI, were popular with the students.

Abstract:Purpose: Dialogic reading (DR) is an evidence-based method for reading with young children that is associated with improvements in children's oral language skills. There is, however, a lack of consensus on (a) how to train educators to deliver the intervention and (b) methods for assessing implementation fidelity. We designed this study to provide preliminary data about the viability of online video modules as an initial training option within a future tiered training model. Method: We employed a within-subject repeated-measures group design to evaluate educators' ( N = 20) implementation of DR after viewing training videos. Educators filmed themselves reading three storybooks with a child “as they would typically” to establish pretest reading behaviors. After being given access to a series of DR training videos, the educators recorded themselves reading three storybooks with the child using DR strategies as a posttest measure. Results: Educators improved their use of individual strategies included in the DR instructional sequence at posttest; however, most participants did not consistently follow the entire instructional sequence as designed. Only one educator delivered the complete DR instructional sequence in > 80% of opportunities at posttest. Conclusion: Modifications to video training modules and additional coaching support may be warranted for many educators to achieve the level of implementation fidelity needed to improve the child's oral language skills from the intervention. Abstract:The recommended rehabilitation procedures for Developmental Dyslexia (DD) are not well defined, and there is currently a large debate on which therapeutic approaches are shown to be more useful and effective. Among the trainings focused on general dysfunctional cognitive processes associated with a reading disorder, recent studies suggested the efficacy of trainings on Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) compared to others. The present study was aimed at confirming the effectiveness of RAN training (RANt) to improve the reading performances of children with DD ( n = 32) compared to children on a waiting list (WL, n = 25) and to children in different treatment groups, one following a text reading training (RT, n = 26) and the other combining RAN and text reading exercises (RANt+RT, n = 20), through an online platform that allows intensive and self-adaptive activities. Results confirmed the efficacy of RANt in improving reading speed and accuracy compared to the WL group (r 2 ranging from small (.16) to medium (.48)) and found the absence of differences with the other active control groups. The single-subject level analysis confirmed the results, a high inter-subject variability in treatment response and pre-post differences were found. Further studies could consider such variability in the functional profile of the DD subjects, but RANt was confirmed to be a valid tool for improving decoding skills.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of two procedures, a photo activity schedule intervention and Social Stories, to teach social skills to four children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).METHODS: An adapted alternating treatments design with an additional multiple baseline control was used, and two social skills were targeted for each of the four participants, one under each intervention condition.RESULTS: Results indicated that all four participants learned the target social behaviours with the photo activity schedule intervention, but did not learn target social behaviours with Social Stories.CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the use of a photo activity intervention for teaching social skillsto children with ASD; we discuss the implications of inconsistent findings of effectiveness of Social Stories.

Teaching Vocabulary to Preschool Children With Hearing Loss

Abstract:Despite poor vocabulary outcomes for children with hearing loss, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of specific vocabulary teaching methods on vocabulary learning for this group. The authors compared three vocabulary instruction conditions with preschool children with hearing loss: (a) explicit, direct instruction; (b) follow-in labeling; and (c) incidental exposure using an adapted alternating-treatments single-subject experimental design. Nine preschool children with hearing loss participated in the study across 6 weeks, with intervention implemented by 4 teachers of the deaf. Visual analysis of the results of the data indicated that participants learned the most words in the explicit, direct instruction condition and the fewest words in the incidental exposure condition. These results are not consistent with some recommendations currently made to educators. The authors discuss implications for practice, including emphasis on direct instruction.

Abstract:Behavioral Disorders, Ahead of Print. Paraprofessionals play a significant role in the education system. However, they often need more training on specific instructional strategies to use with the students they work with. In this study, we trained two paraprofessionals working in a self-contained elementary classroom for students with high-intensity behavioral support needs. Each paraprofessional used constant time delay to support students' learning to read grade-level sight and science words. Paraprofessionals also gathered maintenance and generalization sessions using individualized social stories created by the classroom teacher. Not only did the four student participants meet mastery of their personalized word sets but paraprofessionals also implemented all phases with high fidelity. We discuss limitations, implications for practice, and recommendations for future research.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of phonics and whole-word techniques on improving the English reading skills of dyslexic students. Methods: The research method was a pre-test, posttest comparison group design. The population consisted of all elementary dyslexic students in Ardabil city. 30 participants were selected by availability sampling, and they were randomly assigned into two experimental groups (conditions of phonics (dealing with the individual sounds and letters of a word)) and whole-word (taking a word as a complete unit of meaning). To better understand both teaching techniques and to have an accurate understanding of the quality and how to improve the comprehension and learning of words and its impact on reading skill, the sample was homogenized through a pre-test using Vocabulary Levels Test. Then, they participated in 12 sessions each 60 minutes receiving instruction and practice on learning vocabulary through phonics and whole-word methods to see their influence on their reading skill. Results: After performing the treatment, the results were compared through covariance analysis and independent samples t-test. The findings showed an average amount of progress in terms of vocabulary in both groups. However, those language learners in the whole-word group outperformed those in the phonics group when it came to the reading skill (P<0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that lexical teaching methods (word-based) and phonics (sound-based) have a significant effect on improving the reading skills of dyslexic learners, however, the contribution of the whole-word method is more than that of the phonics technique.

Abstract:Previous research has shown the importance of font type, size, and spacing to facilitate text reading in dyslexia. Great heterogeneity in the population of readers with specific learning disorders suggests that personalized parameters should be preferable compared to one-fits-all ones. A special automatized procedure was designed to select the most favorable parameters for both text visualization and text-to-speech conversion. A total of 78 primary and middle school students (29 typical readers, 49 children with atypical reading skills, either diagnosed as specific reading disorder or as special learning needs) took part in this study, which included the application of the procedure and a validation of its outcomes through a systematic comparison of the use of the personalized versus standard fonts and voices in reading and writing tests. The results show a significant advantage for the personalized parameters. Moreover, in the case of text-to-speech personalization, the advantage is significantly larger for dyslexic readers than for typical readers. These results confirm the usefulness of a personalization approach in providing support to facilitate learning in dyslexic students.

Abstract:The effect of instructing parents of children with language delays in effective joint book-reading techniques was compared with language facilitation through more general conversational instruction. Thirty-three children, 3 to 6 years of age, and their mothers participated. Parents receiving a version of Whitehurst's Dialogic Reading Training Program (Whitehurst et al., 1988) increased their use of what/who questions, open-ended questions, imitation, and expansions more than did parents receiving conversational language training. More modest effects were also found for the children, primarily in an increased rate of verbal responses to questions, increased number of different words, and increased Mean Length of Utterance. Parents whose behavior changed following the instruction were more likely to have had children whose language changed, a finding suggesting that the program affects children's development. In addition, correlations between children's pretest level and their change as a result of the treatment suggested that children learn different things from joint book reading at different points in development. On the whole, the results of this investigation of book-reading training suggest that it has considerable potential for facilitating language development with children with language delays, but that stronger interventions, monitored over a longer period of time, are needed.

Using errorless learning to treat letter-by-letter reading: contrasting word versus letter-based therapy

Abstract:Some pure alexic readers have been shown to activate lexical and semantic knowledge under brief presentation conditions. This ability is not seen when letter-by-letter reading accuracy is high or the reading impairment is very severe. It is also unlikely to occur under normal untimed presentation because the pure alexic will make deliberate use of their letter-by-letter strategy. This paper presents data from a moderately severe letter-by-letter reader, FD, who had visual processing problems affecting reading. He also had other mild aphasic characteristics. FD showed implicit reading abilities under brief presentation conditions, being able to make lexical decisions and semantic categorisations well above chance. FD was given two therapy programmes, the first, whole word therapy to exploit this implicit ability and the second to improve letter-by-letter accuracy and speed. FD showed some improvement in reading ability after both therapy programmes, particularly for words of personal interest to him. His letter naming accuracy and reading of visually similar words were the most resistant to change. A striking effect of therapy was the cessation of FD's letter-by-letter reading and the emergence of some of the characteristics of deep dyslexia. Even when therapy concentrated on letter accuracy, FD did not revert back to his original letter-by-letter reading strategy. The results are discussed with reference to the two theories of pure alexia. Some conclusions are drawn about the need for therapists to examine and exploit all residual reading skills when devising therapeutic programmes.

Abstract:Investigating the effects of the special education support program (SESP) and visual-praxis-based occupational therapy program (VPBOTP) on visual perception skills of children with developmental dyslexia (DD). A time-series quasi-experimental design with two stages was used. The first stage included visual perception assessments of children with DD who were registered to the SESP, using MVPT-3. Following the assessments, SESP was implemented for a total of 16 hours in the span of 8 weeks. In the second stage, MVPT-3 was administered for a second time, SESP's implementation continued for another 16 hours and VPBOTP was implemented also for a total of 32 hours in the span of 8 weeks. Finally, the MVPT-3 was administered for the third time. VPBOTP was found to be statistically more effective than SESP in improving visual perception skills (p<0.05). VPBOTP offers a different, individualizable, and flexible approach for improving visual perception skills of children with DD and its usage can be widened to other populations.
The Effectiveness of Interventions for Developmental Dyslexia: Rhythmic Reading Training Compared With Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation and Action Video Games

Abstract:Developmental dyslexia is a very common learning disorder causing an impairment in reading ability. Although the core deficit underlying dyslexia is still under debate, significant agreement is reached in the literature that dyslexia is related to a specific deficit in the phonological representation of speech sounds. Many studies also reported an association between reading skills and music. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing basic auditory skills of children with DD may impact reading abilities. However, music education alone failed to produce improvements in reading skills comparable to those resulting from traditional intervention methods for DD. Therefore, a computer-assisted intervention method, called Rhythmic Reading Training (RRT), which combines sublexical reading exercises with rhythm processing, was implemented. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of RRT and that of an intervention resulting from the combination of two yet validated treatments for dyslexia, namely, Bakker's Visual Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation (VHSS) and the Action Video Game Training (AVG). Both interventions, administered for 13 h over 9 days, significantly improved reading speed and accuracy of a group of Italian students with dyslexia aged 8-14. However, each intervention program produced improvements that were more evident in specific reading parameters: RRT was more effective for improvement of pseudoword reading speed, whereas VHSS + AVG was more effective in increasing general reading accuracy. Such different effects were found to be associated with different cognitive mechanisms, namely, phonological awareness for RRT and rapid automatized naming for VHSS + AVG, thus explaining the specific contribution of each training approach. Cognitive Function in Low-Income and Low-Literacy Settings: Validation of the Tablet-Based Oxford Cognitive Screen in the Health and Aging in Africa A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa (HAALSI)

Abstract:Objectives 1. Assess validity of the Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS-Plus), a domain-specific cognitive assessment designed for low-literacy settings, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); 2. Advance theoretical contributions in cognitive neuroscience in domain-specific cognitive function and cognitive reserve, especially related to dementia. Method In a cross-sectional study of a sample of 1,402 men and women aged 40-79 in the Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa (HAALSI), we administered OCS-Plus along with health and sociodemographic assessments. HAALSI is a representative sample of older adults in Agincourt, South Africa contributing to normative understanding of cognition in LMIC. We report measure distributions, construct and external validity of the OCS-Plus. Results OCS-Plus has excellent construct and external validity. Intra-class correlations between similar basic measures of orientation in OCS-Plus and in HAALSI assessments was 0.79, and groups of people performing well on the OCS-Plus verbal memory also showed superior performance on HAALSI verbal memory. The OCS-Plus scores showed consistent associations with age and education and domain-specific associations with alcohol and depression. Younger respondents and the more educated did better on all assessments. Discussion The OCS-Plus represents a major methodological advance in dementia studies in LMICs, and enhances understanding of cognitive aging.
