Abstract:Nanoplastics, which are small plastic particles resulting from the decomposition of plastic waste, can accumulate and adsorb toxic chemicals in aquatic environments, leading to detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for the development of an efficient method to accurately quantify and effectively remove nanoplastics. Here, we prepared a novel "cage-like" microrobot for effective dynamic capture and highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection of nanoplastics in situ. The microrobot utilizes water as fuel under visible light and achieves efficient capture of nanoplastics within 2 min on the basis of the stacking structure between layers and electrostatic action. The microrobot could be recovered by an external magnetic field, and the SERS activity was greatly enhanced through the coupling of multilayer hot spots, with a detection limit of 1.27 μg/mL. We built a simple device to demonstrate the feasibility of the microrobot strategy of capturing plastic in real wastewater and further extended this technology to single-use plastic cups in everyday life. Moreover, many different types of plastic spectra can also be quickly distinguished when combined with machine learning. This work provides new ideas for improving the dynamic capture and effective monitoring of nanoplastics.

Abstract:While microplastics (1 mu m-5 mm) contamination is creating public concern, nanoplastics (<1000 nm) might create even more serious environmental contamination issues. This is likely due to the smaller size/higher specific surface area of nanoplastics which works more efficiently as a vector for other contaminants' transportation and fate, to release the formulation additives and to be accumulated in the human body. The research on nanoplastics is currently hampered by the absence of an effective characterisation method, although X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy/Scanning Electron Microscopy (XPS/SEM) is reportedly dominating the nanoplastics characterisation approaches. Recently, imaging technology, which provides direct visualisation of the targets, is attracting increased attention. In this study, we demonstrate that Raman imaging can be employed to visualise and identify microplastics and nanoplastics down to 100 nm, by distinguishing the laser spot, the pixel size/image resolution, the nanoplastics size/position (within a laser spot), the Raman signal intensity, and via the sample preparation etc. We also validate this technique for the analysis of paint-polishing dust samples that have been collected from a driveway when a vehicle's clear coating of poly-acrylic was polished by hand. We estimate that billions-trillions of microplastics/nanoplastics ranging from similar to 7 mu m down to similar to 200 nm have been generated by hand-polishing an engine hood. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Removal of Nanoplastics from Aqueous Solution by Aggregation Using Reusable Magnetic Biochar Modified with Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) pollution has become an emerging threat to the aquatic environment and its organisms. The removal of NPs from contaminated water is a global challenge. In this study, an efficient and reusable composite was prepared from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) modified magnetic biochar. The performances of CTAB modified magnetic biochar (CMB) to remove polystyrene (PS) and carboxylate-modified polystyrene (CPS) nanoparticles from water were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PS and CPS removal performance of magnetic biochar was improved by CTAB modification. These increases were assigned to the increase in the surface hydrophobicity of CMB. Due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between the nanoparticles, PS and CPS maintained high stability in alkaline conditions, resulting in a significant decrease in removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was decreased to 67.4% for PS and to 40.7% for CPS at pH 11. The inhibition effects of NaCl on the PS and CPS removal efficiencies were decreased gradually with the increase of NaCl concentration. Among the anions studied, H2PO4- had the biggest impact on the removal performance of CMB. Besides, CMB could be used to remove PS and CPS in real surface water, and the removal efficiencies of PS and CPS were 95.3% and 97.8%, respectively. Particularly, the removal efficiencies of PS and CPS were 90.2% for PS and 94.8% for CPS when CMB was recycled five times. According to the characterization results of XRD, TGA, SEM, FTIR and XPS, PS and CPS nanoparticles were removed by CMB from water mainly through aggregation instead of adsorption. The efficient removal of PS and CPS by CMB via aggregation process offers new insight into the removal of NPs from aquatic environment.

Abstract:Bioinspired magnetically powered microrobots, based on microalgae cells modified with magnetic nanoparticles, are introduced. Upon being decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, microalgae cells can achieve precise movement and wireless manipulation by controlling an external magnetic field. Leveraging the active mobility, the magnetic algae‐robots exhibit substantial efficiency in capturing and removing micro/nanoplastics, offering extensive applicability across various scenarios. The proliferation of micro/nanoplastics derived from the fragmentation of plastic waste released in the environment represents an increasingly alarming issue with adverse implications for aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Conventional approaches for mitigating such contamination are inadequate in removing plastic fragments with exceptionally tiny sizes. Therefore, it is highly urgent to develop efficient strategies to address the threats posed by micro/nanoplastics. Here, biohybrid microrobots, integrating the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, are investigated for the dynamic removal of micro/nanoplastics from various aquatic environments via high‐precision magnetic actuation and reliable electrostatic interactions. After the surface decoration with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, algae cells can achieve precise locomotion and wireless manipulation by regulating an external magnetic field. Taking advantage of this active movement, magnetic algae robots (MARs) display considerable capture and removal efficiencies for micro/nanoplastics in water with extensive application scenarios. The reusability of MARs is also investigated, proving great recyclable performance. The growth and cell viability experiments elucidate that the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles may result in hormesis stimulation of algae growth. Such recyclable microrobots with eco‐friendly and low‐cost characteristics offer an attractive strategy for sustainably tackling micro/nanoplastics pollution.

Visible-light-induced self-propelled nanobots against nanoplastics

Abstract:The accumulation of plastic debris in aquatic organisms has raised serious concerns about the potential health implications of their incorporation into the food chain. However, conventional water remediation techniques are incapable of effectively removing nanoplastics (NPs) smaller than 200 nm, which can have harmful effect on animal and human health. Herein, we demonstrate the "on-the-fly" capture of NPs through their enlargement (approximately 4,100 times) using self-propelled nanobots composed of a metal-organic framework. Under visible-light irradiation, the iron hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF) nanobot exhibits fuel-free motion by electrostatically adsorbing NPs. This strategy can contribute to reducing plastic pollution in the environment, which is a significant environmental challenge. Light-induced intervalence charge transfer in the FeHCF nanobot lattice induces bipolarity on the nanobot surface, leading to the binding of negatively charged NPs. The local electron density in the lattice then triggers self-propulsion, thereby inducing agglomeration of FeHCF@NP complexes to stabilize their metastable state. The FeHCF nanobot exhibits a maximum removal capacity of 3,060 mg∙g-1 and rate constant of 0.69 min-1, which are higher than those recorded for materials reported in the literature.
Cost-Effective and Wireless Portable Device for Rapid and Sensitive Quantification of Micro/Nanoplastics

Abstract:The accumulation of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) in ecosystems poses tremendous environmental risks for terrestrial and aquat-ic organisms. Designing rapid, field-deployable, and sensitive devices for assessing the potential risks of MNPs pollution is critical. However, current techniques for MNPs detection have limited effectiveness. Here, we design a wireless portable de-vice that allows rapid, sensitive, and on-site detection of MNPs, followed by remote data processing via machine learn-ing algorithms for quantitative fluorescence imaging. We uti-lized a supramolecular labeling strategy, employing lumines-cent metal-phenolic networks composed of zirconium ions, tannic acid, and rhodamine B, to efficiently label various sizes of MNPs (e.g., 50 nm – 10 μm). Results showed that our de-vice can quantify MNPs as low as 330 microplastics and 3.08×106 nanoplastics in less than 20 min. We demonstrated the applicability of the device to real-world samples through determination of MNPs released from plastic cups after hot water and flow induction, and nanoplastics in tap water. More-over, the device is user-friendly and operative by untrained personnel to conduct data processing on APP remotely. The analytical platform integrating quantitative imaging, custom-ized data processing, decision tree model and low-cost analysis ($0.015 per assay) has great potential for high-throughput screening of MNPs in agrifood and environmental systems.

Abstract:Abstract Nanoplastic pollution, the final product of plastic waste fragmentation in the environment, represents an increasing concern for the scientific community due to the easier diffusion and higher hazard associated with their small sizes. Therefore, there is a pressing demand for effective strategies to quantify and remove nanoplastics in wastewater. This work presents the “on-the-fly” capture of nanoplastics in the three-dimensional (3D) space by multifunctional MXene-derived oxide microrobots and their further detection. A thermal annealing process is used to convert Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into photocatalytic multi-layered TiO 2 , followed by the deposition of a Pt layer and the decoration with magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The MXene-derived γ-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt/TiO 2 microrobots show negative photogravitaxis, resulting in a powerful fuel-free motion with six degrees of freedom under light irradiation. Owing to the unique combination of self-propulsion and programmable Zeta potential, the microrobots can quickly attract and trap nanoplastics on their surface, including the slits between multi-layer stacks, allowing their magnetic collection. Utilized as self-motile preconcentration platforms, they enable nanoplastics’ electrochemical detection using low-cost and portable electrodes. This proof-of-concept study paves the way toward the “on-site” screening of nanoplastics in water and its successive remediation.

Abstract:The extensive production and widespread use of plastic products have resulted in the gradual escalation of plastic pollution. Micro/nano/plastic pollution has become a global issue, and addressing how to "green" remove them is a crucial topic that needs to be tackled at this stage. Recently, micro/nanorobots have offered a promising solution for improving water monitoring and remediation as an environmentally friendly remediation strategy. Micro/nanorobots have been proven to efficiently remove micro/nanoplastics from water bodies. Micro/nanoplastics are captured by micro/nanorobots in water through electrostatic adsorption and electrophoretic interactions, and separation is achieved under the action of an external transverse rotating magnetic field. Their small size enables them to navigate easily in complex environments, while magnetic and optical drives help them move along established routes and reach different areas. With the assistance of these innovative robots, diffusion-limited reactions can be overcome, allowing for active contact with target pollutants. However, research on the removal of micro/nanoplastics by micro/nanorobots is still in its early stages. The dependence on chemical fuels and high costs severely limit the development and application of micro/nanorobots. Micro/nanoplastics are frequently captured by micro/nanorobots, but the degradation efficiency of micro/nanoplastics remains very low. Additionally, the secondary pollution caused by micro/nanorobots is also a key factor limiting their implementation. Although micro/nanorobots are a very promising technology for removing micro/nanoplastics, they still need to be explored in their applications. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by micro/nanorobots in removing micro/nanoplastics. Development and application of self-driven intelligent micro/nanorobots will help expedite the eco-friendly removal of micro/nanoplastics and other emerging pollutants.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) have the characteristics of various species, wide distribution, low concentration and difficult degradation. In recent years, the researches of NPs have mainly focused on its toxicity, origin and migration, and the quantitative detection and removal technology of NPs is an urgent technical problem to be solved. Here, an active biohybrid microrobots (DPA-algae robots, diphenolic acids-alage robots) was designed and developed for dynamic removal of NPs in water environment. Firstly, diphenolic acids were functionalized on algae to realize the specific adsorption of nanoplastics through hydrophobic force, electrostatic attraction and van der Waals force between diphenolic acids and nanoplastic particles. Secondly, to realize the rapid identification of NPs, the functionalized algae were assembled into microrobots through rapid click chemistry reaction, thus the self-propulsion ability of algae can be utilized to accelerate the identification and enrichment of target objects. The removal rate of nanoplastics by microalgae robots has increased to 83.1 % at the concentration of 0.125 mg/mL within 2 h compared with the unmodified algae, which is a very significant improvement. In addition, the removal rate was 84.1 % to 87.7 % in different media, so the dynamic removal of NPs is expected to be applied into the filtration process of waterworks by preparing a large number of algae-based microrobots. This multi-functional microrobot is cost-effective and biocompatible, providing a new solution to the global "plastic crisis".

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) pollution has emerged as an increasing global concern due to their widespread presence in aquatic environments and potential harm to organisms. As a result, there is an urgent demand for the development of efficient strategies to remove NPs from water. In this study, a surface-functionalized superparamagnetic absorbent was designed for the rapid removal of NPs. The absorbent consists of a superparamagnetic core (Fe 3 O 4 ) and a carbon shell, where the carbon surface is functionalized through positively charged imidazole groups and alkyl chain groups. This innovative design greatly improves the material's stability and facilitates efficient absorption and agglomeration of NPs. The developed absorbent exhibits a significantly higher maximum absorption capacity of 992 mg/g for PS NPs compared to other functionalized carbon materials. The absorption mechanism, as well as the effects of pH and ions on removal efficiency, were thoroughly investigated. The absorbent exhibits rapid and high absorption capabilities, the ability to be magnetically recycled, and excellent removal efficiency across a wide pH range, indicating its potential for effectively removing NPs from waters. This research provides a highly efficient method for NPs removal in water and invaluable insights into designing functional absorbents for water purification.

Abstract:The escalating prevalence of nanoplastics contamination in environmental ecosystems has emerged as a significant health hazard. Conventional analytical methods are suboptimal, hindered by their inefficiency in analyzing nanoplastics at low concentrations and their time-intensive processes. In this context, we have developed an innovative approach that employs luminescent metal–phenolic networks (L-MPNs) coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to separate and label nanoplastics, enabling rapid, sensitive and quantitative detection. Our strategy utilizes L-MPNs composed of zirconium ions, tannic acid, and rhodamine B to uniformly label nanoplastics across a spectrum of sizes (50–500 nm) and types (e.g., polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polylactic acid). Rhodamine B (RhB) functions as a Raman reporter within these L-MPNs-based SERS tags, providing the requisite sensitivity for trace measurement of nanoplastics. Moreover, the labeling with L-MPNs aids in the efficient separation of nanoplastics from liquid media. Utilizing a portable Raman instrument, our methodology offers cost-effective, swift, and field-deployable detection capabilities, with excellent sensitivity in nanoplastic analysis and a detection threshold as low as 0.1 μg/mL. Overall, this study proposes a highly promising strategy for the robust and sensitive analysis of a broad spectrum of particle analytes, underscored by the effective labeling performance of L-MPNs when coupled with SERS techniques.

Abstract:Although a considerable knowledge base exists for environmental contamination from nanoscale and colloidal particles, significant knowledge gaps exist regarding the sources, transport, distribution, and effects of microplastic pollution (plastic particles < 5 mm) in the environment. Even less is known regarding nanoplastic pollution (generally considered to be plastic particles < 1 μm). Due to their small size, nanoplastics pose unique challenges and potential risks. We herein report a technique focused on the concentration and measurement of nanoplastics in aqueous systems. Hydrophobically functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (HDTMS-FeNPs) were used as part of a method to separate and concentrate nanoplastics from environmentally relevant matrices, here using metal-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (PAN-Pd@NPs) to enable low-level detection and validation of the separation technique. Using a magnetic separation flow cell, PAN-Pd@NPs were removed from suspensions and captured on regenerated cellulose membranes. Depending on the complexity of solution chemistry, variable extraction rates were possible. PAN-Pd@ NPs were recovered from ultrapure water, synthetic freshwater, synthetic freshwater with a model natural organic matter isolate (NOM; Suwannee River Humic Acid), and from synthetic marine water, with recoveries for PAN-Pd@NPs of 84.9%, 78.9%, 70.4%, and 56.1%, respectively. During the initial method testing, it was found that the addition of NaCl was needed in the ultrapure water, synthetic freshwater and synthetic fresh water with NOM to induce particle aggregation and attachment. These results indicate that magnetic nanoparticles in combination with a flow-through system is a promising technique to extract nanoplastics from aqueous suspensions with various compositions.
Enhanced Removal of Nanoplastics from Freshwater Using In-Situ Synthesized and Anchored Nano-Fe3o4 Via Two-Step Ferrous Oxidation

Abstract:Magnetic separation is a promising strategy for removing nanoplastics (NPs) from water; however, it often requires complex processeses, such as synthesizing nano-Fe3O4 magnets and attaching them to specific carriers. This study presents an innovative and efficient strategy to in-situ synthesize and anchor nano-Fe3O4 onto polystyrene (PS) NPs through a two-step oxidation of ferrous ions, which significantly enhances NPs removal via magnetic separation. The two-step process involves initial alkalization of a ferrous aqueous solution under anoxic conditions, followed by oxidation in air. In the presence of PS spheres, nano-Fe3O4 forms in-situ on the PS surfaces, promoting sedimentation under a magnetic field. Results demonstrate that two-step ferrous oxidation achieves superior removal rates, with 99.32 % for 500 nm PS spheres (PS-500) and 93.16 % for 100 nm PS spheres (PS-100) using a low Fe2+ dosage of 0.1 mM. In contrast, the conventional one-step method, which simultaneously alkalizes and oxidizes ferrous sulfate in aerobic conditions, fails to form nano-Fe3O4 and results in low removal rates of only 56.49 % for PS-500 and 8.89 % for PS-100, respectively. Furthermore, the turbidity and residual Fe can be reduced to below 1 NTU and 0.1 mg/L by using two-step process, respectively, meeting drinking water safety and hygiene standards. This approach not only simplifies the magnetic nanomaterial preparation process but also substantially improves the NP removal efficiency, offering a promising solution for enhanced water treatment technologies and safer drinking water.

Abstract:A new graphical analytical technique is described for the hybridization of bacterial RNA with denatured homologous DNA immobilized on cellulose nitrate membrane filters. To a constant amount of DNA, various amounts of bacterial RNA were added and the percentage of input RNA bound was plotted against the DNA/RNA weight ratio in a given experiment. When RNA samples were used that hybridize to denatured DNA as a single species, the resulting curves (RNA-hybridization-efficiency curves) could be analysed to show the percentage of the DNA capable of specifically binding the RNA and could also be used to detect the presence of minor RNA contaminants in a purified specimen. The method could also estimate the relative amounts of two species of RNA in a mixture when these were hybridized independently to different DNA cistrons or cistron groups. As an example of RNA that can be studied in this way, the 16s and 23s ribosomal RNA species of Bacillus subtilis were chosen. These each behave in DNA-RNA hybridization as a single species and bind independently to different groups of DNA cistrons. The results obtained from hybridization-efficiency curves were compared with those obtained by the more usual method of saturating the specific DNA regions with excess of ribosomal RNA (hybridization-saturation curves). It was confirmed by both approaches that 0.15 (+/-0.02)% of B. subtilis DNA would hybridize with 16s ribosomal RNA, 0.30 (+/-0.02)% would hybridize with 23s ribosomal RNA, and 0.46 (+/-0.02)% would hybridize with (16s+23s) ribosomal RNA. This agreement suggested that mass-action equilibria between hybridized and free RNA had a negligible effect on the hybridization curves over the range of DNA and RNA concentrations employed.
Recyclable Nanomotors for Dynamic Enrichment and Detection of Low‐Concentration Emerging Pollutants

Abstract:Recyclable nanomotors are prepared to actively and effectively capture low concentrations of emerging pollutants and perform high‐sensitivity real‐time surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. The contaminated nanomotors can be self‐cleaned through a simple cooling treatment based on temperature‐sensitive properties and recycled with an external magnetic field, providing a simple way for the treatment of emerging pollutants. Emerging pollutants, known for their high toxicity, pose significant risks to human health and the environment. However, the identification of these pollutants is difficult and costly due to their low concentration and complex composition. Here, a cost‐effective and scalable identification method is demonstrated to rapidly concentrate and detect emerging pollutants at ultra‐low concentrations. The approach takes advantage of responsive autonomous propulsion R‐Fe3O4@Au@β‐CD‐EG‐PF127 (RAP) nanomotors driven by magnetism, to significantly enhance the efficiency of pollutant adsorption in large‐scale water. Owing to the fast driving capability and multi‐interaction mechanism, nanomotors can effectively capture trace concentrations of emerging pollutants, achieving a capture efficiency of over 90%, while also ensuring that all captured pollutants fall within the enhanced electromagnetic field range of the nanomotors. This leads to highly sensitive surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals with detection limits as low as 10−10 m. Contaminated nanomotors showcase significant self‐cleaning capabilities that can be activated through temperature variations, resulting in a substantial reduction in detection expenses. Even after undergoing cyclic experiments, the nanomotors consistently exhibit remarkable capture efficiency and outstanding SERS sensitivity. This work can provide a scalable and practical technical solution to eliminate and monitor the transport of emerging pollutants in the environment.

Abstract:The rising incidence of nanoplastics contamination in environmental ecosystems has led to substantial health risks. Traditional analysis methods are suboptimal due to their inability to efficiently analyze nanoplastics at low concentrations and time-consuming operations. Herein, we developed an innovative strategy, employing luminescent metal–phenolic networks (L-MPNs) coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to separate and label nanoplastics, thus facilitating rapid, sensitive and quantitative detection of nanoplastics. We used L-MPNs composed of zirconium ions, tannic acid and rhodamine B, to uniformly label diverse sizes (50-500 nm) and types of nanoplastics (i.e., polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polylactic acid). Rhodamine B, serving as a Raman reporter in L-MPNs-based SERS tags can offer sufficient sensitivity for trace measurement of nanoplastics and L-MPNs labeling can also facilitate separation of nanoplastics from liquid medium. By using a portable Raman instrument, our method offers cost-effective, rapid, and field-deployable detection features with excellent sensitivity in nanoplastic analysis with a limit of detection of 0.1 ppm. Moreover, this study provides a highly promising strategy for the robust and sensitive analysis of a wide range of particle analytes through the effective labeling performance of L-MPNs when coupled with SERS techniques.

Abstract:The pervasive presence of nanoplastics (NPs) in environmental media has raised significant concerns regarding their implications for environmental safety and human health. However, owing to their tiny size and low level in the environment, there is still a lack of effective methods for measuring the amount of NPs. Leveraging the principles of Mie scattering, a novel approach for rapid in situ quantitative detection of small NPs in low concentrations in water has been developed. A limit of detection of 4.2 μg/L for in situ quantitative detection of polystyrene microspheres as small as 25 nm was achieved, and satisfactory recoveries and relative standard deviations were obtained. The results of three self-ground NPs showed that the method can quantitatively detect the concentration of NPs in a mixture of different particle sizes. The satisfactory recoveries (82.4% to 110.3%) of the self-ground NPs verified the good anti-interference ability of the method. The total concentrations of the NPs in the five brands of commercial bottled water were 0.07 to 0.39 μg/L, which were directly detected by the method. The proposed method presents a potential approach for conducting in situ and real-time environmental risk assessments of NPs on human and ecosystem health in actual water environments.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a research aimed at establishing a novel method for the detection of primary and secondary micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), by using the fluorescence properties of the dye Nile Red-n-heptane (NR-H). The method has been applied to the detection of laboratory degraded polymers (Polystyrene, PS and Polyethylene Terephthalate, PET) as well as traceable latex microspheres in aqueous environments, showing a remarkable detection capacity and avoiding the prior extraction or processing of MNPs in natural samples, with significant time savings compared to conventional methods. The study has been carried out on various types of water, including samples from wastewater treatment plants, boreholes, seawater and synthesized seawater. The effectiveness of the staining process was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and optical microscopy. As a result, a novel standardizable protocol for the rapid detection of MNPs has been established, with the potential to improve environmental protection through fast in-situ detection and identification of plastic contaminants. The limitations of the protocol in the quantification of MNPs have also been identified and further studies are proposed to overcome these limitations.
