Abstract:Background: Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) experience impairments in heat dissipation, compromising core temperature regulation during exercise. Objective: To examine the efficacy of combined head-and-neck cooling as administered via a commercially available cooling cap and neck wrap in mitigating increases in core temperature during exercise. Methods: On separate days, ten (7 females) adults (46.1 ± 11.6 years) with relapsing-remitting MS performed semi-recumbent cycling consisting of an incremental exercise bout to volitional fatigue in a temperate environment (23 °C, 50 % relative humidity) while undergoing head-and-neck cooling using a cooling cap and neck wrap maintained at 10 °C (COLD) or 24-26 °C (NEUTRAL). Prior to and following a 30-minute post-exercise recovery, functional capacity was assessed by a battery of tests consisting of a 2-minute walk test, Timed 25-Foot Walk test, sit-to-stand test, and Berg Balance Scale. Core (ingestible pill) and skin temperatures were recorded continuously. The level of fatigue was measured with questionnaires. Results: The duration of the incremental exercise test increased with the application of COLD (28.4 ± 5.1 min) versus NEUTRAL water (vs 20.8 ± 5.1 min) (p = 0.001) and was paralleled by a significant reduction in body temperatures (∼1 °C, p < 0.05). The distance covered during the 2-min walk test performed after the incremental exercise test increased with the COLD (176.5 ± 0.6 m), relative to the NEUTRAL condition (147.7 ± 43.5 m) (p = 0.01). Fatigue levels did not change between conditions. Conclusion: We show that head-and-neck cooling with cold water effectively enhances exercise tolerance and mitigates increases in core temperature during exercise in individuals with MS.
Positive Effect of a Cooling Cap on Functional Performance in Thermosensitive People with Multiple Sclerosis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background. Up to 80% of people with MS experience worsening of their condition upon an increase in body temperature. Therefore, various options of cooling are being evaluated to help improve physical performance in people with MS. Most previous studies used active cooling methods. Our aim was to study the effect of simple device providing passive cooling. Methods. A randomized crossover study was conducted in 21 thermosensitive people with mild to moderate disability. Subjects were tested immediately before and after intervention (experimental or sham cooling). The assessment included timed 25-foot walk test, the 2- and 6-minute walk test, nine-hole peg test, and symbol digit modalities test. Results. A significant improvement was found in the experimental group in timed 25-foot walk test ( p = 0.011 ) and in nine-hole peg test for dominant hand ( p = 0.033 ). No significant improvement was found in the control group (sham cooling). Conclusions. Wearing cooling cap can improve short-term functional performance (walking and fine motor skills) in thermosensitive people with MS. This passive cooling method can be considered as a symptomatic treatment for some people with MS. This trial is registered with ISRCTN56350227.

The Impact of Neck Cooling on Serum Oxidant/Antioxidant Status and HSP70 Levels during High-Intensity Cycling

Abstract:Numerous studies have been conducted in an attempt to discover cooling strategies that can be effective in improving exercise performance. However, the mechanism by which neck cooling relieves exercise-induced physiological stress and the optimal cooling temperature are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of neck cooling at different temperatures during high-intensity cycling on body temperature, physiological variables, oxidant/antioxidant status, heat shock protein (HSP) 70 levels, and exercise performance in adolescent athletes. Seven well-trained male adolescent cyclists (age, 17.00 ± 0.76 years; athletic career, 3.86 ± 0.90 years) participated in three exercise trials involving three cooling regimens: control (CON), low-temperature (7 °C) neck cooling (LNC), and mixed-temperature (14 + 20 °C) neck cooling (MNC). The experimental condition used a cross-over design to minimize adaption to the repetitive cycling trials. Cycling consisted of a 20 km warm-up session and a two 2 km race session. Neck cooling at different temperatures was administered for 20 min during each rest period: after the warm-up, after the first 2 km race, and after the second 2 km race. Blood samples were taken to assess serum malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and HSP70 levels. In addition, tympanic temperature (Tty), thermal sensation (TS), heart rate (HR), and the saturation of percutaneous oxygen (SpO2) were measured before, immediately after, and 24 h after exercise. As a measure of cycling performance, the race record and speed were measured in the first and second 2 km races. In all trials, Tty, TS, HR, MDA, SOD, and HSP70 levels significantly increased (p < 0.05), and SpO2 levels significantly decreased (p < 0.05). TS significantly decreased 24 h after exercise compared to that immediately after exercise in the LNC and MNC trials (p < 0.05). Serum HSP70 levels were significantly higher 24 h after exercise (0.87 ± 0.10 ng/mL) than immediately after exercise (0.79 ± 0.04 ng/mL) in the CON trial (p < 0.05). Twenty-four hours after exercise, the CON (0.87 ± 0.10 ng/mL) trial showed significantly higher serum HSP70 levels than the LNC (0.73 ± 0.01 ng/mL) trial (p 0.05). Our findings suggest that neck cooling can induce a positive effect on thermal perception during recovery after cycling and that neck cooling at a relatively low temperature may be more effective in reducing exercise-induced HSP70 expression.

Abstract:Introduction: Noninvasive temperature modulation by localized neck cooling might be desirable in the prehospital phase of acute hypoxic brain injuries. While combined head and neck cooling induces significant discomfort, peripheral vasoconstriction, and blood pressure increase, localized neck cooling more selectively targets blood vessels that supply the brain, spares thermal receptors of the face and skull, and might therefore cause less discomfort cardiovascular side effects compared to head- and neck cooling. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of noninvasive selective neck cooling on cardiovascular parameters and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV). Methods: Eleven healthy persons (6 women, mean age 42 ± 11 years) underwent 90 min of localized dorsal and frontal neck cooling (EMCOOLS Brain.Pad™) without sedation. Before and after cooling onset, and after every 10 min of cooling, we determined rectal, tympanic, and neck skin temperatures. Before and after cooling onset, after 60- and 90-min cooling, we monitored RR intervals (RRI), systolic, diastolic blood pressures (BPsys, BPdia), laser Doppler skin blood flow (SBF) at the index finger pulp, and CBFV at the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA). We compared values before and during cooling by analysis of variance for repeated measurements with post hoc analysis (significance: p < 0.05). Results: Neck skin temperature dropped significantly by 9.2 ± 4.5 °C (minimum after 40 min), while tympanic temperature decreased by only 0.8 ± 0.4 °C (minimum after 50 min), and rectal temperature by only 0.2 ± 0.3 °C (minimum after 60 min of cooling). Index finger SBF decreased (by 83.4 ± 126.0 PU), BPsys and BPdia increased (by 11.2 ± 13.1 mmHg and 8.0 ± 10.1 mmHg), and heart rate slowed significantly while MCA-CBFV remained unchanged during cooling. Conclusions: While localized neck cooling prominently lowered neck skin temperature, it had little effect on tympanic temperature but significantly increased BP which may have detrimental effects in patients with acute brain injuries.

The effect of a combined cooling intervention on cognitive function in the heat during an intermittent running protocol

Abstract:Despite optimal cognitive function being essential for performance, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of combined cooling interventions on team sport athlete's cognitive function when exercising in the heat. In a randomised, crossover design, 12 unacclimatised men (age: 22.3 ± 3.0 years, body mass: 73.4 ± 5.1 kg, height: 181.0 ± 5.3 cm and V ˙ O 2 $\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ max: 51.2 ± 9.5 mL/kg/min) participated in a control (CON) and combined cooling trial (ice slurry and ice collar; COOL). A battery of cognitive tests were completed prior to, during (at half-time) and following a 90-min intermittent running protocol in the heat (33°C, 50% relative humidity (RH)). Perceptual and physiological measures were taken throughout the protocol. In CON, response times were quicker on the Stroop task complex level (p = 0.002) and the visual search test complex level at full-time (p = 0.014) compared to COOL. During COOL, response times were quicker at half-time on the Stroop task complex level (p = 0.024) compared to CON. Lower rectal temperatures were seen during COOL (CON: 37.44 ± 0.65°C and COOL: 37.28 ± 0.68°C) as well as lower skin, neck and forehead temperatures (main effect of trial, all p < 0.05). Lower ratings of thermal sensation and perceived exertion and enhanced thermal comfort were recorded during COOL (main effect of trial, all p < 0.05). Whilst minimal differences in cognitive function were found when using the combined cooling intervention, the findings highlight a practical and effective strategy to improving many physiological and perceptual responses to intermittent exercise in the heat.
Cooling during exercise enhances performances, but the cooled body areas matter: A systematic review with meta-analyses

Abstract:Introduction: Hyperthermia during exercise induces central and peripheral fatigue and impairs physical performance. To facilitate heat loss and optimize performance, athletes can hasten body cooling prior (pre-cooling) or during (per-cooling) exercise. However, it is unclear whether per-cooling effect is the same on 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' types of exercise (duration <75 and >76 seconds, respectively, according to Gastin [Sports Med 2001;31:725-741]) and whether the body area that is cooled makes a difference. Methods: A literature search led to the identification of 1582 potential studies. Included studies had to include physical exercise with sufficient details on the type, duration, intensity, and provide valid performance measures and a cooling intervention administered during exercise with sufficient details on the type and site of application. Results: Forty-five studies were included. Per-cooling provides a performance benefit during 'aerobic' (standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.60, P < .001) and 'anaerobic' exercises (SMD = 0.27, P < .02). The effects were greater during aerobic compared to anaerobic exercises (P < .01). Internal cooling (cold fluid ingestion such as cold water and ice slurry/menthol beverage) and external cooling (face, neck, and torso) provide the greatest performance benefit for 'aerobic' performance with a moderate to large effect (0.46 < SMD < 1.24). For 'anaerobic' exercises, wearing a whole-body cooling garment is the best way to enhance exercise performance (SMD = 0.39, P < .01). Conclusion: Per-cooling improves 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' exercise performance with a greater benefit for 'aerobic' exercise. The magnitude of the effect depends on the type and site of the cooling application.

Abstract:BackgroundSome people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) avoid exercise due to overheating. Evidence from a variety of cooling treatments shows benefits for pwMS.ObjectiveConduct a randomized controlled trial of antipyretic treatment before exercise in pwMS.MethodsAdults over age 18 diagnosed with relapsing–remitting MS reporting heat sensitivity during exercise were randomly assigned to one of six sequences counterbalancing aspirin, acetaminophen, placebo. At each of three study visits separated by ≥ one week, participants received 650-millograms of aspirin, acetaminophen, or placebo before completing a maximal exercise test. Primary outcomes were body temperature change and total time-to-exhaustion (TTE), secondary outcomes were physiological and patient-reported outcomes (PROs).ResultsSixty participants were enrolled and assigned to treatment sequence; 37 completed ≥ one study visit. After controlling for order effects, we found that body temperature increase was reduced after aspirin (+ 0.006 ± 0.32 degrees Fahrenheit, p < 0.001) and after acetaminophen (+ 0.31 ± 0.35; p = 0.004) compared to placebo (+ 0.68 ± 0.35). TTE after aspirin (331.6 ± 76.6 s) and acetaminophen (578.2 ± 82.1) did not differ significantly from placebo (551.0 ± 78.4; p’s > 0.05). Aspirin benefited all secondary outcomes compared to placebo (all p’s < 0.001); acetaminophen showed broadly consistent benefits.ConclusionThese results support antipyretic treatment as effective for reducing overheating during exercise in pwMS and failed to support antipyretics for increasing TTE in the context of a maximal exercise test. Benefits were shown for physiological markers of exercise productivity and PROs of fatigue, pain, and perceived exertion.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a local wearable cooling solution in improving thermal comfort, emotional state, and cognitive performance. The study was conducted in an environmental room with air temperature of 31.5 ± 0.26 °C. Thirty participants performed six cognitive tasks while periodically assessing their thermal experience locally where the cooling (Embr wave) was applied and for the whole body, as well as emotional states. The same protocol was applied to another thirty participants as the control group without local cooling. We also measured mean skin temperature and local skin temperature beneath the cooling device during the whole session. The results showed a significant drop in thermal sensation right after the application of the local cooling. Based on the ASHRAE 7-point scale for the overall thermal sensation vote, the local sensation dropped from 0.8 to −0.4 and the whole-body thermal sensation from 1.34 to 0.87. Over the 60 min of local cooling application, the local thermal sensation dropped from 0.98 to 0.04 and the whole-body thermal sensation dropped from 1.37 to 1.12. Furthermore, the local cooling group showed a significant drop in negative emotions and an increase in positive emotions compared to the control group. For cognitive performance, local cooling groups showed to be more inclined for risk taking for more rewards compared to the control group. The performance of other cognitive tests showed no significant difference between the two groups, even though attention, working memory and creativity were enhanced slightly but insignificantly.

Cooling During Exercise: An Overlooked Strategy for Enhancing Endurance Performance in the Heat

Abstract:It is well established that endurance performance is negatively affected by environmental heat stress due to a complex interaction of physical, physiological and psychological alterations. Numerous scientific investigations have attempted to improve performance in the heat with pre-cooling (cooling prior to an exercise test), and as such this has become a well-established ergogenic practice for endurance athletes. However, the use of mid-cooling (cooling during an exercise test) has received considerably less research attention in comparison, despite recent evidence to suggest that the advantage gained from mid-cooling may outweigh that of pre-cooling. A range of mid-cooling strategies are beneficial for endurance performance in the heat, including the ingestion of cold fluids and ice slurry, both with and without menthol, as well as cooling of the neck and face region via a cooling collar or water poured on the head and face. The combination of pre-cooling and mid-cooling has also been effective, but few comparisons exist between the timing and type of such interventions. Therefore, athletes should experiment with a range of suitable mid-cooling strategies for their event during mock competition scenarios, with the aim to determine their individual tolerable limits and performance benefits. Based on current evidence, the effect of mid-cooling on core temperature appears largely irrelevant to any subsequent performance improvements, while cardiovascular, skin temperature, central nervous system function and psychophysiological factors are likely involved. Research is lacking on elite athletes, and as such it is currently unclear how this population may benefit from mid-cooling.
Local body cooling to improve sleep quality and thermal comfort in a hot environment

Abstract:The effects of local body cooling on thermal comfort and sleep quality in a hot environment were investigated in an experiment with 16 male subjects. Sleep quality was evaluated subjectively, using questionnaires completed in the morning, and objectively, by analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals that were continuously monitored during the sleeping period. Compared with no cooling, the largest improvement in thermal comfort and sleep quality was observed when the back and head (neck) were both cooled at a room temperature of 32°C. Back cooling alone also improved thermal comfort and sleep quality, although the effects were less than when cooling both back and head (neck). Mean sleep efficiency was improved from 84.6% in the no cooling condition to 95.3% and 92.8%, respectively, in these conditions, indicating good sleep quality. Head (neck) cooling alone slightly improved thermal comfort and subjective sleep quality and increased Stage N3 sleep, but did not otherwise improve sleep quality. The results show that local cooling applied to large body sections (back and head) could effectively maintain good sleep and improve thermal comfort in a hot environment.

Costimulation by interleukin‐1 of multiple activation responses in a developmentally restricted subset of immature thymocytes

Abstract:An intriguing feature of thymocyte differentiation is that the competence to express both interleukin‐(IL)2 and CD25 is acquired even prior to T cell recept or (TcR) expression. When T cell receptor‐independent stimuli are used, immature cells can express IL‐2 at levels comparable to mature cells, but unlike the mature cells, immature cells require IL‐1 as a costimulus. Here we present evidence that IL‐1 affects a variety of responses by members of the CD25+ subset of immature thymocytes. Cells in this population are IL‐1 dependent not only for induction of IL‐2 expression, but also for high‐level maintenance of CD25 expression. CD25+ expression is amplified by IL‐1 through a mechanism highly sensitive to changes in Ca2+ ionophore concentration. The effects of IL‐1 on CD25 maintenance are not mediated by IL‐2, because of the divergent effects of cAMP on IL‐2 and CD25+ expression. IL‐1 costimulation also increases RNA accumulation in the cell cycle, and this effect too seems to be separable from the effects on IL‐2 and CD25+ expression. All these effects of IL‐1 are developmentally stage‐specific, manifest in the CD25+ subset of immature thymocytes but not in later‐stage thymocytes or splenic T cells. Multiparameter cell sorting experiments that dissect the transitional stages between immature and TcR+ thymocytes imply that all immature cells pass through an IL‐1 responsive state. Responsiveness to IL‐1 costimulation is then lost by these cells, apparently irreversibly, at a stage just prior to detectable cell‐surface TcR expression. These results indicate that IL‐1 responsiveness is a defining characteristic of the activation physiology of cells in a particularly important developmental stage.
The effect of passive heating and face cooling on perceived exertion during exercise in the heat

Abstract:Increased body temperature is thought to be an important component of the higher perception of exertion that is a feature of fatigue during exercise in the heat but a causal relationship has yet to be demonstrated. We have investigated the effect of passive heating on the perception of exertion during a standard bout of exercise and also assessed the effect of cooling the head on compensating for the increased body temperature on the feelings of exertion. Ten male subjects performed a 14-min cycling exercise [average power ~63% of maximum power output (Ẇmax)] at an ambient temperature of 35°C at resting rectal temperature [mean (SD): 37.49 (0.27)°C; control (CON) trial] on one occasion, and after sitting in a sauna to raise rectal temperature [mean (SD): 38.95(0.13)°C; sauna (SAU) trial]. During the exercise, subjects reported their ratings of overall perceived exertion (RPE), perceived exertion of the legs (RPElegs) and thermal comfort (TC). A blood sample was collected by the end of the exercise for determination of plasma glucose, lactate and prolactin and haematocrit. RPE values were significantly elevated after passive heating [mean (SE): 14.5 (0.7) units in CON and 17.2 (0.5) units in SAU, at the end of exercise; P<0.001] as were the RPElegs (P<0.01), while ratings of TC were similar in CON and SAU trials. Passive heating increased blood glucose (P<0.05) but had no effect on lactate at the end of the exercise. Plasma prolactin was markedly elevated as a result of the sauna exposure [mean (SE): 1598 (152) versus 225 (31) mU l−1 in SAU and CON trials, respectively; P<0.001]. Six of the subjects repeated the two trials but with the face cooled during exercise (trials CONFAN and SAUFAN) that was achieved by combining face fanning and spraying the face with a mist of cooled water. Face cooling decreased RPE values after sauna to a point that no differences between the two conditions existed. RPElegs scores and heart rate, however, remained higher in SAUFAN compared with CONFAN (P<0.05). We conclude that hyperthermia is a causative element of the increased perception of exertion during submaximal exercise in the heat and that the effect of increased core temperature on the feelings of exertion is modulated by face cooling.

Abstract:Background: Whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) has an adverse effect on the nervous system and neurophysiological performance. In the present study, we examined whether short-duration whole-body immersion in 45°C water (HWI-45°C), which produces a strong neural and temperature flux without inducing WBH, can increase or impair neurophysiological performance in humans. Methods: Fifteen men (aged 25 ± 6 years) were enrolled in this study and participated in three experiments: 1) a brief (5-min) immersion of the whole body in 37°C water (WI-37°C); 2) a brief (5-min) HWI-45°C; and 3) a control trial in a thermoneutral condition at an ambient temperature of 24°C and 60% relative humidity. Before and after the immersions, neuromuscular function (electromyographic activity, reflexes, electrically and voluntary induced torque production, voluntary muscle activation level) were tested. To provoke central inhibition, the participants performed a sustained 2-min maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Results: Thermophysiological strain was greater after HWI-45°C than after WI-37°C. Electrophysiological modulations of motor drive transmission and peripheral modulations of muscle contractility properties in response to HWI-45°C seemed to have little effect on central activation of the exercising muscles and no effect on MVC production. Conclusion: Although exposure to acute noxious heat was effective in evoking neuromuscular excitability, the increases in core temperature (∼0.2°C) and muscle temperature (∼0.6°C) did not induce moderate or severe WBH. These changes did not seem to affect central structures; that is, there were no additional increases in central and/or peripheral fatigue during a sustained 2-min MVC.
Phase-change material cooling blanket: A feasible cooling choice during transport after exercise-induced hyperthermia

Abstract:Background: Exercise-induced hyperthermia preceding the onset of exertional heatstroke requires a rapid reduction in the body core temperature (Tcore) to ensure safety. In recent years, phase-change material (PCM) cooling devices have been increasingly used for rapid cooling after hyperthermia due to their superior capacity for heat absorption. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the cooling performance and effectiveness of a PCM cooling blanket on heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) recovery after exercise-induced hyperthermia. Design: Randomized cross-over. Methods: The study participants were 12 male volunteers who were engaged in professional training and completed an endurance exercise for approximately 30 min in a hot and humid environment (temperature ≈ 30 °C; relative humidity ≈ 66%). The participants underwent a 30-min cooling trial after exercise, receiving either treatment with a PCM cooling blanket (PCM group) or natural cooling (CON group). The Tcore, HR, and HRV time-domain indices were used for analysis. Results: The Tcore values were significantly lower in the PCM group during cooling. Reductions in the Tcore from precooling to 20 min of cooling were significantly greater in the PCM group than in the CON group. The HR in the PCM group was lower than that recorded in the CON group at 10 and 20 min of cooling. The reduction in HR during cooling from precooling was also significantly greater in the PCM group. HRV time-domain indices during cooling in the PCM group were significantly lower compared with the CON group while elevations in some HRV time-domain indices from precooling to postcooling were significantly greater in the PCM group than in the CON group. Conclusions: The PCM cooling blanket had good cooling performance and the ability to hasten recovery of both HR and HRV. It may serve as a feasible cooling choice during transport after exercise-induced hyperthermia.
Effect of continuous cooling on inhibition and attention while wearing firefighter's PPE in a hot environment

Abstract:Firefighting is physically and mentally strenuous, requiring rapid, appropriate decision-making in hot environments. Intact cognitive function is imperative to firefighters' effectiveness and safety. The study purpose was to investigate the effect of hyperthermia and the effect of body cooling on sustained attention and response inhibition while wearing firefighters' personal protective ensembles after exercise in a hot environment. Twelve healthy males were recruited to participate in two randomly assigned exercise sessions (walking on a treadmill for 40 min at 40% [Formula: see text] O2max while wearing firefighter's protective ensemble) in a hot environment: control (no cooling) and intervention (cooling). For intervention sessions, a cooling garment was worn underneath firefighter's protective ensemble and infused with 18 °C water supplied by an external water circulator. Participants performed a computerized Go/No-Go (a measure of cognitive function) test three times at baseline and post-exercise for each experimental session. Participants completed baseline testing while wearing cotton athletic clothing. The exercise continued until the core temperature reached ∼39 °C (for all subjects regardless of cooling or non-cooling experimental sessions). Following hyperthermia, participants' physiological responses were significantly increased after exercise. Subjects' reaction time was significantly reduced (improved) after experiencing thermal strain and reaching hyperthermia. The cooling method had a significant impact on suppressing the physiological load, i.e., body cooling delayed the time to reach a Tc of 39 °C (p ≤ 0.05), but not cognitive inhibition and attention (reaction time and accuracy). Unexpectedly, hyperthermia resulted in shorter reaction time following exercise (16.64 ± 5.62; p < 0.03), likely influenced by increased attention/vigilance. Hyperthermia may trigger an acute increase in alertness, causing decreased reaction time.
Acute Effects of Intermittent Foot Cooling on 1 RM Leg Press Strength in Resistance-Trained Men: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Inter-set peripheral cooling can improve high-intensity resistance exercise performance. However, whether foot cooling (FC) would increase 1 repetition maximum (RM) lower-limb strength is unclear. This study investigated the effect of intermittent FC on 1 RM leg press strength. Ten recreational male lifters performed three attempts of 1 RM leg press with FC or non-cooling (NC) in a repeated-measures crossover design separated by 5 days. FC was applied by foot immersion in 10 °C water for 2.5 min before each attempt. During the 1 RM test, various physiological measures were recorded. The results showed that FC elicited higher 1 RM leg press strength (Δ [95% CI]; Cohen’s d effect size [ES]; 13.6 [7.6–19.5] kg; ES = 1.631) and electromyography values in vastus lateralis (57.7 [8.1–107.4] μV; ES = 0.831) and gastrocnemius (15.1 [−3.1–33.2] μV; ES = 0.593) than in NC. Higher arousal levels (felt arousal scale) were found in FC (0.6 [0.1–1.2]; ES = 0.457) than in NC. In conclusion, the preliminary findings, although limited, suggest intermittent FC has a potential ergogenic role for recreational athletes to enhance maximal lower-limb strength and may partly benefit strength-based competition events.
