Abstract:Leather manufacturing generates a large amount of leather solid waste, among which the effective treatment of leather waste scraps rich in protein resources has always been a challenge for the tanning industry. In this paper, a green and convenient method was devised for the first time to prepare protein retarding material (PRM) for gypsum from chrome-free tanned leather waste. Aldehyde tanned leather scraps as the main chrome-free leather waste were directly hydrolyzed through high-pressure hydrothermal treatment without any chemicals to obtain PRM. Compared with chemical treatment (acid or alkaline hydrolysis), high-pressure hydrothermal method avoided the decrease of protein product purity due to without the help of acid and alkali. The results showed that PRM obtained from leather waste had a significant effect on prolonging the initial setting time and delaying the release of hydration heat of gypsum. With the dosage or molecular weight of PRM increased, this retarding effect on gypsum was more remarkable. SEM, XRD, and FTIR analysis indicated that the presence of PRMs inhibited the hydration process of gypsum hemihydrate to gypsum dihydrate. Through polypeptide-calcium chelation, PRMs could bind free Ca2+ ions dissolved from gypsum to delay them from participating in the hydration reaction. The larger molecular weight or the more dosage of PRM, the stronger ability to bind calcium ions in gypsum. Chemical structure characterization and molecular dynamics simulation of PRM-Ca chelate further proved that PRMs mainly through carboxyl groups on molecular chain combined with Ca2+ in gypsum system to inhibit hydration reaction, thereby fulfilling the retardation demand. This study indicated that PRM from leather scraps can be a promising candidate for gypsum retardation, which provides a path for the efficient utilization of leather waste.

Abstract:Effective treatment and high-valued utilization of chrome leather scraps have always been desired by all tanneries, which is of great significance for green and sustainable development of leather industry. In this paper, we first devised a green and effective approach to obtain collagen hydrolyzed extract (CHE) from chrome leather scraps, and then the obtained CHE was used in the granulation of pastoral soil to prepare CHE-Soil granular fertilizer. The results indicated that chrome leather scraps were effectively dechromed with sodium oxalate and then hydrolyzed by a high-pressure hydrothermal method without any chemical to obtain high-purity CHE. When the 4.5 wt%similar to 12.5 wt% CHE solution was introduced into the granulation process, the granulation rate of pastoral soil was up to 89.8%similar to 95.6%. However, the effective granulation rate was decreased due to the increase in large granule size (>5 mm). CHE-Soil granular fertilizer prepared by adding more CHE exhibited better surface roundness and more excellent crush resistance. Moreover, this type of granular fertilizer possessed excellent water retention and slow-released nutrient properties. Pine leaf peony cultivation experiments further showed that the presence of CHE-Soil granular fertilizer rapidly promoted plant growth and effectively increased the harvest of plants. This study indicated that CHE obtained from chrome leather scraps could be effectively used as a nutritious additive with adhesiveness to prepare the granular fertilizer for plant growth, which provides a novel idea for designing valorization methods of leather waste.

Abstract:The leather industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world due to the large amounts of waste following raw hide processing but also due to the high content of chemical substances present in leather waste. The main problem with chromium-tanned leather solid waste is related to the storage, due to the ability of chromium to leach into soil or water, and also owing to the high ability of trivalent chromium to oxidize to its toxic form, hexavalent chromium. The purpose of this article is to present the most current methods of chromium extraction from solid tanned leather waste in order to obtain non-polluting leather, which can constitute secondary raw material in new industrial processes. The extraction methods identified in the present study are based on acid/basic/enzymatic hydrolysis and substitution with the help of organic chelators (organic acids and organic acid salts). In addition, this study includes a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each identified extraction method. At the same time, this study also presents alternative chromium extraction methods based on the combination of conventional extraction methods and ultrasound-assisted extraction.

Abstract:Huge quantities of chromium-containing leather solid wastes are generated during the production of chrome-tanned leather worldwide. Disposal of these huge quantities of leather solid wastes is a major challenge due to the presence of chromium, which is highly toxic (mainly in its hexavalent form) and detrimental to the environment. Sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of their disposal and treatment options for removing chromium are required so that the dechromed waste can be utilized to make useful products, such as fertilizer for soil conditioning, to improve agriculture, or other applications. In this study, therefore, a new method of dechroming leather solid wastes was designed, whose procedure and results were compared with three other commonly used methods. The focus of the various dechroming methods was on the evaluation of the degree of chromium extraction from chrome-tanned leather wastes without destroying the collagen tissues. The average total amount of extractable chromium content (Cr2O3) in the dried leather waste samples was found to be 3.67%. The new method was found to be relatively more efficient, environmentally sound and less cumbersome than all the other methods investigated in this work. At P-Value of < 0.05, concentrations of chromium extracted and %TKN in residual collagen hydrolysate reached up to 99.89% and 52.89%, respectively. The levels of total ash and total organic carbon were also relatively high in the resultant collagen hydrolysate (i.e. 12.42% and 23.27%, respectively). The t distribution test on the results of the various dechroming methods confirmed that there was a significant difference at 95% confidence interval, since t (calculated) was greater than t (tabulated). It was concluded that nearly all the chromium in chrome-tanned leather wastes can be removed with a simple technology, which is sustainable and environmentally sound.

Abstract:Today, tens of millions of tons of Cr-containing leather shavings are produced annually, particularly in the developing countries. However, the lack of capitals and appropriate hazard processing technologies often results in the discharge of chromium contaminants, seriously affecting more than one million of population in the world. Herein, we developed a coal-wrapping pyrolysis process to convert hazardous leather shavings into a Cr-N co-doped carbon catalyst. Thanks to the N-rich feature of the leather, excess Cr was fixed into the stable chromium nitride compound which are highly resistant to the oxidation into hazardous high-valence Cr species. This material effectively catalyzed the oxygen reduction reaction to yield H2O2 with selectivity ∼ 86% at 0.62 V (vs RHE) thanks to the synergistic effect between N and Cr moieties. Methylene blue, a model organic pollutant in wastewater, can be effectively adsorbed and then decomposed via the in-situ generated hydroxyl radicals. This work provides a green yet practically-feasible way to valorize the Cr-containing leather shavings, and might inspire other scientists to find innovative solutions to address the severe environmental challenges among developing countries.

Abstract:The removal of chromium(III) from leather solid waste was carried out by two steps: the leaching step and the ion exchange step. Orthogonal method was applied to the leaching process with H2SO4 as leaching agent and the leaching rate was nearly 100%. The adsorption and desorption of Cr3+ with 732# cation exchange resins were investigated in the ion exchange process. The effects of the resin types, temperature, rotating speed, liquid-solid ratio, initial Cr3+ concentration and time were investigated and the optimum conditions were as follows: 732#, 333 K,120 r/min, 20 ml/g, 280 ppm and 5 h. The removal efficiency of Cr3+ from leather hydrolysate was over 95% under optimized conditions. The desorption efficiency of Cr3+ from loaded resins was almost 99% by three times cross-flow with Na2SO4 solution. The re-adsorption of CO3+ could achieve 95% by regenerated resins. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of Cr3+ onto 732# resins were investigated. The adsorption process appeared to follow Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Delta H-0 = 33,816.03 kJ/mol and Delta S-0 = 141.35J/(mol.K) were calculated. Biological Solubilisation of Leather Industry Waste in Anaerobic Conditions: Effect of Chromium (III) Presence, Pre-Treatments and Temperature Strategies

Abstract:Collagen-based polymers and their blends have attracted considerable interest for new materials development due to their unique combination of biocompatibility, physical and mechanical properties and durability. Leather, a modified natural biopolymer made from animal rawhide and the first synthetic collagen-based polymer known since the dawn of civilization, combines all these features. Rawhide is transformed into leather by tanning, a process in which the collagen is cross-linked with different agents to make it stronger and more durable and to prevent its decay. Research on the development of environmentally friendly procedures and sustainable materials with higher efficiency and lower costs is a rapidly growing field, and leather industry is not an exemption. Chrome-tanned and vegetable-tanned (chromium-free) shavings from the leather industry present a high content of organic matter, yet they are considered recalcitrant waste to be degraded by microbiological processes like anaerobic digestion (AD), a solid technology to treat organic waste in a circular economy framework. In this technology however, the solubilisation of organic solid substrates is a significant challenge to improving the efficiency of the process. In this context, we have investigated the process of microbial decomposition of leather wastes from the tannery industry to search for the conditions that produce optimal solubilisation of organic matter. Chrome-tanned and chromium-free leather shavings were pre-treated and anaerobically digested under different temperature ranges (thermophilic-55 °C-, intermediate-42 °C- and mesophilic-35 °C) to evaluate the effect on the solubilisation of the organic matter of the wastes. The results showed that the presence of chromium significantly inhibited the solubilization (up to 60%) in the mesophilic and intermediate ranges; this is the fastest and most efficient solubilization reached under thermophilic conditions using the chromium-free leather shaving as substrates. The most suitable temperature for the solubilization was the thermophilic regime (55 °C) for both chromium-free and chrome-tanned shavings. No significant differences were observed in the thermophilic anaerobic digestion of chromium-free shavings when a pre-treatment was applied, since the solubilisation was already high without pre-treatment. However, the pre-treatments significantly improved the solubilisation in the mesophilic and intermediate configurations; the former pre-treatment was better suited in terms of performance and cost-effectiveness compared to the thermophilic range. Thus, the solubilisation of chromium-free tannery solid wastes can be significantly improved by applying appropriate pre-treatments at lower temperature ranges; this is of utter importance when optimizing anaerobic processes of recalcitrant organic wastes, with the added benefit of substantial energy savings in the scaling up of the process in an optimised circular economy scenario.
A novel eco-friendly imidazole ionic liquids based amphoteric polymers for high performance fatliquoring in chromium-free tanned leather production

Abstract:<p>The potential environmental pollution of chrome tanned leather results in the development of ecological chromium-free leather tanning production in leather industry. However, with weakly positive charge, chromium-free tanned leather cannot strongly bind to anionic dyes, thus causing low quality of finished leather. Herein, p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS was synthesized by free radical polymerization method. The structure and properties of the targeted products were synthetically characterized. The results indicated that the use of p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS fatliquoring agent can not only make leather fibers become loose, but also improve the binding affinity between leather and anionic dye during the fatliquoring process. The fatliquoring agent adsorption rates and the dye absorption rate of the leather were as high as 99.26% and 99.01%, respectively; the fatliquoring and dye solutions were clear, so they can be used as clean materials in the fatliquoring process of chromium-free tanned leather. Leather treated with p(DM-co-[DDVIM]Br)PS fatliquoring agent had higher K/S value (12.80) and is softer than those treated with commercial fatliquoring agent. Consequently, this study can not only help improve the absorption rate of anionic wet finishing materials, but also reduce the pollution caused by chrome tanning agents, thus providing a new way for the cleaner production in leather industry.</p>

Abstract:PURPOSE We examined the fundus autofluorescence (FAF) characteristics of nascent geographic atrophy (nGA), pathological features preceding the development of drusen-associated atrophy in eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that can be visualized using high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) and FAF imaging were performed longitudinally in 221 eyes with intermediate AMD (having at least drusen >125 μm), and seven areas that developed drusen-associated atrophy in five eyes were examined and categorized with respect to FAF characteristics. These categories then were used to characterize 49 areas of nGA or drusen-associated atrophy on SD-OCT identified in a cross-sectional study with 230 participants with bilateral intermediate AMD. RESULTS Sequential imaging revealed that FAF characteristics in the atrophic areas could be grouped into three categories: predominantly hyperautofluorescent (hyperAF), presence of both hyper- and hypoautofluorescence (mixed AF), or predominantly hypoautofluorescent (hypoAF). In the cross-sectional study, the FAF characteristics were significantly dependent on the type of atrophic area (P = 0.002), where areas of nGA appeared most commonly as being mixed AF (63%), while areas of drusen-associated atrophy most commonly as hypoAF (86%). CONCLUSIONS Fundus autofluorescence imaging revealed that areas of nGA were most commonly characterized by both hyper- and hypoautofluorescent changes, which differs from areas of drusen-associated atrophy that most often appeared hypoautofluorescent. These findings provide important insights into the FAF characteristics of areas undergoing atrophic changes in eyes still considered to be in the early stages of AMD by current methods, and thus assist in the characterization of disease severity in these early stages.

Abstract:Chrome tanning agent is the most widely used tanning agent with the best performances of finished leather, but the traditional chrome tanning process poses severe challenges because of the serious chromium pollution, thus the upgrading of cleaner chrome tanning process is imminent. In order to reduce the residual chromium in wastewater and increase the utilization rate of chrome tanning agent, 4-acetyl-heptanediate (AHA), a high exhaustion chrome auxiliary, was developed and applied in chrome retanning process. The results showed that AHA chrome retanning processes (AHA-6 and AHA-4) significantly reduced the chromium content in wastewater by 48.14% and 47.57%, and increased the chromium content in leather by 102.14% and 82.43%. COD and TDS values decreased by 43.82% and 31.46% with AHA-4 method. The addition of AHA obviously reduced the chromium concentration of wastewater, improved the chromium absorption rate, and promoted the cleaner chrome retanning process, which satisfied with the overall requirements of modern sustainable leather industry. The formation of AHA and chromium (III) was discussed using Gaussian 16 program to explain the high exhaustion chrome tanning agent mechanism. The work will guide on design and preparation of new high exhaustion chromium tanning agents for clean leather production.

Abstract:The leather industry produces a large amount of tannery sewage sludge every year, which is a dangerous solid waste, but also a secondary resource. In the present research, the extraction of chromium from the tannery sewage sludge was investigated through the process of blank roasting-sodium carbonate roasting-water leaching and the process of sulfuric acid curing-water leaching, respectively. The process of sulfuric acid curing-water leaching was characterised by high extraction of chromium, a simple process as well as low cost of mineral decomposition, which made it the better option. For the process of sulfuric acid curing-water leaching, the leaching of chromium reached up to 99.5% under the optimum conditions of sulfuric acid curing (raw tannery sewage sludge cured at room temperature for 5 min with 42 wt% sulfuric acid addition), followed by water leached at 100°C for 30 min with a liquid/solid ratio of 2 mL/g.

Abstract:Chitosan is a promising adsorbent for removing a wide range of pollutants from wastewater. However, its practical application is hindered by instability in acidic environments, which significantly impairs its adsorption capacity and limits its utilization in water purification. While cross-linking can enhance the acid stability of chitosan, current solvent-based methods are often costly and environmentally unfriendly. In this study, a solvent-free mechanochemical process was developed using high-energy ball milling to cross-link chitosan with various polyanionic linkers, including dextran sulfate (DS), poly[4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid] (PSSM), and tripolyphosphate (TPP). The mechanochemically cross-linked (MCCL) chitosan products exhibited superior adsorption capacity and stability in acidic solutions compared to pristine chitosan. Chitosan cross-linked with DS (Cht-DS) showed the highest Reactive Red 2 (RR2) adsorption capacity, reaching 1559 mg·g−1 at pH 3, followed by Cht-PSSM (1352 mg·g−1) and Cht-TPP (1074 mg·g−1). The stability of MCCL chitosan was visually confirmed by the negligible mass loss of Cht-DS and Cht-PSSM tablets in pH 3 solution, unlike the complete dissolution of the pristine chitosan tablet. The MCCL significantly increased the microhardness of chitosan, with the order Cht-DS > Cht-PSSM > Cht-TPP, consistent with the RR2 adsorption capacity. When tested on simulated rinsing wastewater from chromium electroplating, Cht-DS effectively removed Cr(VI) (98.75% removal) and three per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (87.40–95.87% removal), following pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This study demonstrates the potential of the cost-effective and scalable MCCL approach to produce chitosan-based adsorbents with enhanced stability, mechanical strength, and adsorption performance for treating highly acidic industrial wastewater containing a mixture of toxic pollutants.

Abstract:Tanning, crucial for leather production, relies heavily on chromium yet poses risks due to chromium’s oxidative conversion, leading to significant wastewater and solid waste generation. Physico-chemical methods are typically used for heavy metal removal, but they have drawbacks, prompting interest in eco-friendly biological remediation techniques like biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation. The EU Directive (2018/850) mandates alternatives to landfilling or incineration for industrial textile waste management, highlighting the importance of environmentally conscious practices for leather products’ end-of-life management, with composting being the most researched and viable option. This study aimed to isolate microorganisms from tannery wastewater and identify those responsible for different types of tanned leather biodegradation. Bacterial shifts during leather biodegradation were observed using a leather biodegradation assay (ISO 20136) with tannery and municipal wastewater as the inoculum. Over 10,000 bacterial species were identified in all analysed samples, with 7 bacterial strains isolated from tannery wastewaters. Identification of bacterial genera like Acinetobacter, Brevundimonas, and Mycolicibacterium provides insights into potential microbial candidates for enhancing leather biodegradability, wastewater treatment, and heavy metal bioremediation in industrial applications.

Abstract:Waste collagen fiber (WCF) from non-chrome metal complex tanned leather shavings were converted to bio-additive (DCH) via catalytic peroxide oxidation for updating the performance of biomass-derived aldehyde (BAT) tanned chrome-free leather. The conversion degree of WCF was investigated, and four typical DCHs with different molecular weights (DCH-1: 19695 g/mol; DCH-2: 14942 g/mol; DCH-3: 8222 g/mol; DCH-4: 2959 g/mol), were selected for the post-tanning of BAT tanned leather. ICP-OES analysis indicated that DCH had similar metallic element content. FTIR showed that more carboxyl groups of DCH were formed as the decrease of its molecular weight (MW) due to the cleavage of peptide chains and de-tanning reaction, which was further verified by the decrease of isoelectric point (IEP) of DCH. During the post-tanning process, DCH had no obvious negative impacts on the overall uptake of post-tanning materials and the shrinkage temperature of leather, but it could perform a feasible filling effect. Besides, DCH could endow the crust leather with better dyeing uniformity, mechanical strengths, and organoleptic properties than commercial protein filler due to its special structure containing multivalent metal ions. This suggests that the as-prepared DCH has the capability for manufacturing high-performance chrome-free leather tanned by BAT. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Despite trivalent chromium’s manifold functionalities in industrial manufacturing processes, when it is improperly treated and disposed to the environment, due to external environmental factors it could get converted to hexavalent chromium that has toxic effects on humans and our environment. Hence, there is a stringent need to optimize the current industrial practices of chromium handling, management, and disposal. This paper puts forth the inferences from comparative studies conducted using chemical precipitation and biochar adsorption to ascertain if the current chromium removal practice in the chrome tanning leather industry under study is an optimal method or not. Results indicate that the current industrial practice of achieving 86~90 % removal efficiency using 2000 mg/L of MgO at pH6 can be optimized by carrying out chemical precipitation at pH8 for 96~99% removal efficiency; a combination of NaOH and Ca(OH)2 in varying ratios resulted in 80-96 % removal efficiency at pH7 and ~99% at all the ratios at pH8, but the sludge volumes were higher than twice the volumes generated by MgO precipitation; inactivated biochar in similar proportions to that of chemical precipitants did not yield encouraging results and the maximum removal efficiency was 73.2% at 48000 mg/L dosage. Therefore, if not for complete treatment of tannery wastewater with biochar, residual chromium in the supernatant should be treated with biochar as it could be effective in treating lower concentrations of chromium.

Abstract:This paper presents the basic assumptions of the concept of a new technology for the valorisation of chromium tannery waste. It assumes the use of an integrated system of the thermal pressure hydrolysis process and membrane filtration techniques for the recovery of chromium compounds and the use of a separated organic matter during anaerobic fermentation. According to the assumptions of the developed technological concept, at the first stage, the crushed mixture of chromium tannery waste is decomposed in the process of thermal pressure hydrolysis using appropriate process conditions in an alkaline environment. Then, the liquid product of this process (the so-called hydrolysate) is processed using centrifugal force separation and ultrafiltration. Such activities enable the recovery of chromium compounds for rawhide currying and concentration of organic matter (fats, proteins) with energy potential. Research carried out under conditions similar to real operating conditions proved that chromium compounds recovered from waste can be successfully used in the processing of cowhides intended for the production of footwear. The industrial implementation of the developed technology for valorising chromium tannery waste would enable the transition from a linear to a circular economy.

Abstract:Currently, ammonia-nitrogen (NH3–N), chloride (Cl−) and chromium (Cr) pollution from leather manufacturing processes attracts much attention and limited the sustainable development of the leather industry. In this paper, conventional trypsin bating and high-salt pickling procedures were substituted by a salt-free pickling-bating system, using acidic protease L80A and salt-free pickling agent naphthalene sulfonic acid (NSA); a novel integrated technology comprising non-ammonia bating, salt-free pickling and high-exhausting chrome-tanning methods was established to reduce NH3–N, Cl− and Cr pollution. The results indicated that the properties of the leather produced by the established method were better than the conventional method. Furthermore, the established integrated salt-free pickling-bating technology resulted in the almost elimination of NH3–N and chloride pollution from waste effluent. The total Cr utilization ratio was increased to 95% from 80%, the total Cr discharge was reduced by 74%. Scale-up experiments further verified the acceptability of this novel technology in terms of physical and organoleptic properties of the resultant leather. It can be easy to predict that the effluent liquors with a little amount of NH3–N, chloride and chromium can be disposed of conveniently. We suppose that the established novel technology is an environment-friendly technology and a way forward in the development of the modern sustainable leather industry.

Abstract:Amid mounting pressure on the long-term recyclability of chromium in tanned leather and the associated environmental hazards, the quest for an alternative, cleaner tanning system has gained tremendous momentum. In this context, our study explores the remarkable potential of silicates as a versatile platform for skin/hide tanning, circumventing the inherent risks and ecological threats posed by chromium exposure and leaching. We present an alternative approach of using a silica-based tanning system, employing a Taguchi model, to optimize a masked silica (MaSil) tanning product/process for achieving effective collagen stabilization. Our results demonstrate the significant advancements made in hydrothermal denaturation temperature, reaching an impressive 79 °C through precise Taguchi parameters—5% SiO 2 , masked with 0.3 mole of citrate salt, and a tanning process fixation pH of 4.5. Notably, the mechanical strength analysis reveals compliance with the stringent upper leather recommendation standards, validating the practicality and quality of MaSil crust leather. Moreover, our research highlights the unprecedented environmental benefits of the first reported application of Taguchi's approach to the MaSil tanning system. The developed tanning system remarkably reduces total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and overall water load by 68.4%, 25.4%, 59.5%, and 33.7%, respectively, heralding a promising era of water and environmental sustainability in the leather sector. This study holds the potential to transform leather production, wherein the envisioned future on the use of the Taguchi model and optimized MaSil tanning system could find a place in shaping a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable leather industry.

Abstract:Industrial activities are paramount to sustaining the economy in a rapidly developing nation and global powerhouse like India. Leather industries are important in the country's economic map due to the high revenue and employment generation opportunities. Several of these industries contribute largely to environmental pollution. The pollution of the environment is mainly caused by improper disposal of the tannery effluents that are highly rich in hexavalent chromium, a potent human carcinogen. Hexavalent chromium imparts toxic effects on the biotic components, which include plants, animals, and humans. The review portrays the current status of the Indian leather tanning sector and its impact on the Indian economy. The process of chromium tanning and its adverse effects on the environmental biotic components have been briefly discussed. Phytoremediation of these effluents using suitable hyperaccumulating plants has been suggested as an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach for the sustainable restoration of the polluted environment. The mechanism behind the remediation approach and the factors influencing it have been detailed. The manuscript briefly discusses some important advancements in the field of phytoremediation and emerging technologies and concludes by emphasizing further research for sustainable management of tannery wastes.
