Abstract:Background: Despite perceiving their child as being above a healthy weight, many parents do not intervene. Little is known about the factors influencing parental action. We assessed parental perception of child's weight status, the prevalence of mitigating parental action, and the underlying factors. Methods: We studied 20,242 children and adolescents from 6 centers across China. Anthropometry was measured by research nurses. Parents answered questionnaires, including their perception of their child's weight status, and any subsequent weight treatment. Results: A total of 3254 children had obesity (16.1%), with 63.0% correctly perceived as overweight by their parents. These children were more likely to be older (>= 8 years; p < 0.0001), have severe obesity [adjusted relative risk (aRR) 1.41; p < 0.0001], and have mothers with overweight/obesity (aRR 1.15; p < 0.0001). In particular, parents of children aged <8 years were over five times more likely to perceive their child with overweight/obesity as "thin" than parents of teenagers. Conversely, girls, older children/adolescents, and urban youth were more likely to be wrongly perceived by parents as having an overweight issue. Only one in four children (27.8%) with available information received treatment for their perceived weight problem. Children with severe obesity were more likely to be treated (aRR 1.34; p < 0.0001), as were children of mothers with overweight/obesity (aRR 1.18; p = 0.002). Conclusions: Only one in four Chinese children perceived as overweight by their parents received treatment for their weight problem. Given that overweight/obesity in childhood tracks into adulthood and many parents did not intervene despite perceiving an overweight problem in their child, interventions for childhood obesity need to extend beyond parental perception of children's weight status.

Abstract:Abstract Background The home environment is a central and modifiable influence on the development of childhood obesity. Evidence supports the central role of parents in shaping problematic child eating behaviors and excess weight. Most studies of feeding emphasize parent-driven influences without taking into account the child’s role in eating interactions. Few studies have addressed the bi-directional nature of feeding dynamics in studies of young children. Methods The goals of this study were: 1) to examine if parental feeding styles during preschool (4–5 years) predict child weight status at 7–9 years, and 2) to examine the direction of effects between parental feeding styles and child weight status over time. Participants were part of a larger longitudinal study of Hispanic Head Start families living in the West South Central United States. Data from mother/child dyads were collected at three time points: Time 1 (ages 4–5), Time 2 (ages 5 1⁄2-6 1⁄2), and at Time 3 (ages 7–9). Only data from the Times 1 and 3 were used in the current analyses. A total of 128 mothers and their children had data on all variables needed for the analyses. Assessments included parent-reported feeding styles, feeding practices, acculturation, child eating behaviors, and child height and weight. Hierarchical regression was used to examine the first aim; a cross-lagged panel analysis examined the second aim. Results An indulgent parental feeding style at ages 4–5 was associated with increased child BMI z -score at ages 7–9. Indulgent feeding significantly contributed to child BMI z -score beyond demographics, baseline child BMI z -score, parental acculturation, and child eating behaviors. Regarding the direction of effects in parental feeding interactions, the cross-lagged analyses showed that both indulgent feeding style and authoritative feeding style at Time 1 positively predicted child BMI z -scores at Time 3. Child effects were significant as well. Child BMI z -score at Time 1 positively predicted indulgent feeding and negatively predicted authoritarian feeding at Time 3. Conclusions Indulgent feeding should be addressed in future family-focused childhood obesity initiatives focused on young children and their parents.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:Reducing childhood obesity remains a public health priority given its high prevalence and its association with increased risk of adult obesity and chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to examine the joint influence of multiple risk factors on adolescent overweight status.METHODS:We conducted a random-digit-dialed telephone survey of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in fall 2008 in a Midwestern city in Nebraska. On the basis of survey data for 791 youths aged 12 to 18 years, we conducted latent class analysis to group youths by the joint occurrence of dietary behavior, physical activity, parenting practices, and physician advice. We then examined the association between the groups and overweight status by using logistic regression, controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and parent and family information.RESULTS:Youths were clustered into 3 groups. Group I (52%) were youths with healthy dietary behavior and physical activity, less permissive parenting practices, and physician advice; Group II (30%) were youths with moderately healthy dietary behavior and physical activity, less permissive parenting practices, and no physician advice; and Group III (18%) were youths with unhealthy dietary behavior and physical activity, permissive parenting practices, and physician advice. Youths in Groups I and II were less likely to be overweight than youths in Group III.CONCLUSIONS:Youths with healthier behavior and less permissive parenting practices were less likely to be overweight. Study findings highlight the need to address obesity risk factors among youths with unhealthy dietary behavior, inadequate exercise, permissive parenting practices, and some physician advice. Tailored interventions should be used to target youths with different obesity risk factors.
"Eat Less, Exercise More": A Qualitative Study of Perspectives of Overweight Children and Their Parents on Weight Management in China

Abstract:With the rapid economic and social change accelerating the process of nutrition transition in China, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Chinese children has increased dramatically. This study was to explore the perspectives of overweight children and their parents on weight management. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 parents and their overweight children (16 boys and five girls aged 7-16 with a BMI ranging from 20.95-44.53 kg/m2) admitted to a tertiary pediatric hospital in Hangzhou, China. Interviews were transcribed and thematically analyzed. Themes emerged for parents as dissatisfactions with obesity care services, inadequate knowledge about childhood obesity, false beliefs with Chinese cultural values, barriers (parents and grandparents disagreeing, limited resources outside the hospital, etc.) and concerns about children’s academic performance and mental wellbeing. For children, themes emerged as awareness of being overweight, insufficient health education, facilitators (gift rewards, supportive home environment), barriers (lazy parenting, priority of studies, etc.) as well as social impact. In order to improve the efficiency of childhood obesity treatment, children’s weight management should be integrated into community health services in China. Future interventions on childhood obesity would achieve greater effectiveness by considering all facilitators and barriers especially social cultural factors perceived by both parents and children.
Association of parental eating styles and markers of food intake and nutritional status of Brazilian children

Abstract:We analysed the relationships between maternal feeding styles and children's eating and nutritional factors. A cross-sectional study was developed with 416 mothers linked to 130 public higher education institutions in all Brazilian states and their children aged 18 months to six years. A semi-structured online questionnaire was applied using the Google Forms tool, with questions about sociodemographic conditions, food consumption and anthropometry of the children. The children's food consumption was assessed based on the Food Consumption Markers Form (SISVAN) for the age groups up to 24 months ( n = 84) and over 24 months ( n = 332), and the parental style in feeding, based on the Parental Feeding Styles Questionnaire (QEPA). The assessment of the child's nutritional status was based on the weight and height data reported by the mother. The body mass index/age (BMI/Age) was calculated and classified into age-specific WHO curves. Descriptive analysis and univariate analyses were performed, in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 26.0) programs (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). To test the association between categorical variables, the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used, and multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the independent association between the variables of interest, with an estimated odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Statistical significance was adopted at 5%. Children under 24 months of age with authoritative mothers were 8.7 times more likely to consume ultra-processed foods and 5.3 times less likely to consume foods rich in vitamin A than those with indulgent mothers. Children over 24 months old with authoritative mothers were 2.5 times more likely to eat meals while watching television, 2.0 times more likely to consume sandwich cookies, candies and sweets, and 2.3 times less likely to have at least the three main meals of a day, compared to those with indulgent mothers. The chances of overweight children being born to authoritative mothers were two times greater compared to underweight children. Higher scores in the demandingness domain among responsive mothers increased the odds ratios of children eating unhealthy foods, using screens during meals, and proved to be a protective factor against low child weight.

Abstract:Background Parents or children’s primary caregivers are a key influence on child weight as both decision makers and role models for eating patterns, physical activity, and other social behaviors. It is unknown whether caregivers’ time preferences are associated with overweight or obesity in children. The primary objective was to estimate the association between parents’ or caregivers’ time preferences and children having overweight or obesity in Mexico. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using a representative survey of the Mexican population. A multinomial logistic model was used to examine the association between parents’ or caregivers’ time preferences (patience and time consistency) and child overweight or obesity, adjusting for potential confounders. Results The study included 9,102 children (mean age 10, 43% female) and 5,842 caregivers (mean age 37; 95% female). Intertemporal preference was strongly associated with increased odds of overweight or obesity in children. A medium patient caregiver had higher odds of having overweight (adjusted OR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.19, 2.52). Similarly, having a caregiver with a present (OR: 2.52; 95% CI: 1.72, 3.70) or future bias (OR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.98) was associated with higher odds of obesity. Conclusion Caregivers’ time preferences were associated with having overweight and obesity in children and should be considered when developing policies to reduce children’s obesity status.

Abstract:We aimed to examine whether (a) parents' childhood family mealtime experiences (CFM) (e.g., mealtime communication-based stress) and parents' socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., education level) predict parents' health-related parenting strategies (e.g., discipline), (b) health-related parenting strategies for eating and physical activity predict youth's health-related outcomes (e.g., dietary intake), (c) parenting strategies mediate the relationship between CFM and youth outcomes. A path model was used to examine the above-mentioned relationships. Data were obtained from the baseline assessment of a randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of a family-based intervention to promote quality diet and increase physical activity. Participants were 280 Hispanic youth (52.1 % female, M age = 13.01 ± 0.83) with unhealthy weight (M Body Mass Index %tile = 94.55 ± 4.15) and their parents (88.2 % female, M age = 41.87 ± 6.49). Results indicated that childhood mealtime communication-based stress and mealtime structure were positively associated with control. Appearance weight control was positively associated with monitoring, discipline, limit-setting, and reinforcement. Parental mealtime control had positive associations with discipline, control, and limit-setting. Emphasis on mother's weight was positively associated with reinforcement. We also found positive associations between parental monitoring and youth's physical QOL and between parental discipline and fruits and vegetables intake. No mediating effect was found. Findings demonstrated significant effects of parents' childhood experience on parenting strategies, which in turn was associated with the youths' health-related outcomes. These results suggest the intergenerational effects of parent's childhood experience on their youth's health-related outcomes.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Robotic mitral valve (MV) repair is the least invasive surgical approach to the MV and provides unparalleled access to the valve. We sought to assess technical aspects and clinical outcomes of robotic MV repair for isolated posterior leaflet prolapse by examining the first 623 such cases performed in a tertiary care center. METHODS We reviewed the first 623 patients (mean age 56±9.7 years) with isolated posterior leaflet prolapse who underwent robotic primary MV repair from 01/2006 to 11/2013. All procedures were performed via right chest access with femoral perfusion for cardiopulmonary bypass. RESULTS MV repair was attempted in all patients; 622 (99.8%) underwent MV repair and only 1 (0.2%) converted to replacement. After an initial attempt at robotic MV repair, 8 (1.3%) patients were converted to sternotomy as a result of management of residual mitral regurgitation (n=3), bleeding (n=1), difficulties with surgical exposure (n=2), aortic valve injury (n=1), and aortic dissection (n=1). Intraoperative post-repair echocardiography confirmed that all patients left the operating room with MR graded as mild or less, and pre-discharge echocardiography confirmed mild or less MR in 573 (99.1%). There was no hospital death, sternal wound infection, or renal failure. Seven (1.1%) patients suffered a stroke, 11 (1.8%) patients underwent re-exploration for bleeding, and 111 (19%) experienced new-onset atrial fibrillation. The mean intensive care unit length of stay and hospital length of stay were 29±17 hours and 4.6±1.6 days, respectively. CONCLUSIONS At a large tertiary care referral center, robotic MV repair for posterior prolapse is associated with zero mortality, infrequent operative morbidity, and near 100% successful repair. The combination of a patient selection algorithm and increased experience improved clinical outcomes and procedural efficiency.

Abstract:This study aimed to establish the relationship between Risk Eating Behaviors (CAR), family functioning, parenting practices and styles. An experimental, cross-sectional design was used, with a type of correlative study; through a non-probabilistic sampling, N=67 mother-child dyads, n=67 primary school students (50.7% men; 49.3% women), with an average age of 10.16 years (D. E.= 0.68) and their mothers, with an average age of 37.8 years (D.E.= 3.82). The following instruments were applied: Scale of Risk Factors Associated with Eating Disorders (EFRATA-II), Family Functioning Scale, Parenting Practices Perception Scale for Children (EPPCN), and Parenting Styles Scale. Significant correlations were found between the variables, with the exception of CAR in men and the parenting styles perceived by mothers. Maternal obesogenic environment and its association with childhood obesity in Peru: A 9-year analysis of a national survey

Abstract:Introduction: Childhood obesity is a global public health concern with increasing prevalence in Peru. The obesogenic environment, including maternal and family environmental factors, plays a crucial role in the development of childhood obesity. Objective: To analyze the association between the maternal obesogenic environment and obesity in children under five years of age in Peru. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study used data from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (DHS) from 2014 to 2022. To assess the obesogenic environment, variables such as maternal obesity, television use, smoking, and maternal anemia were analyzed. Childhood obesity was a body mass index Z-score > +3 standard deviations. A Poisson regression model was used to calculate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios. Results: The prevalence of childhood obesity was 1.99%. Obese mothers were found to be 1.52 times more likely to have obese children (aPR=1.52, 95% CI 1.40-1.65; p<0.001). No significant associations were found between frequent television use, maternal smoking, and anemia with childhood obesity after adjusting for multiple factors. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of the maternal obesogenic environment, especially maternal obesity, in developing childhood obesity in Peru. Comprehensive interventions that address multiple aspects of the family obesogenic environment, including the prevention and management of maternal obesity, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and strengthening of public policies that foster healthy environments, are recommended.

Abstract:Childhood is a critical period in the development of obesity. Eating patterns established early in life track into later life. Therefore, parental approaches to feeding in their general parenting style, feeding styles, and specific feeding practices will have a profound impact on how children eat and grow. A systematic research review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted to identify, discuss and integrate recent research investigating the relationship between parenting styles, feeding styles, feeding practices, and body mass index (BMI) in children. Medline (Ovid), PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Food Science and Technology Abstracts were systematically searched using sensitive search strategies. Studies were limited to papers published in English between 2010 and February 2015 with participants aged 4-12 years old with outcomes including obesity, change in weight, or BMI. The search yielded 31 relevant quantitative peer-reviewed papers meeting all inclusion criteria: seven longitudinal, 23 cross-sectional, one randomized control trial. Associations between parenting style and child BMI were strongest and most consistent within the longitudinal studies. Uninvolved, indulgent or highly protective parenting was associated with higher child BMI, whereas authoritative parenting was associated with a healthy BMI. Similarly for feeding styles, indulgent feeding was consistently associated with risk of obesity within cross-sectional studies. Specific feeding practices such as restriction and pressure to eat were linked to BMI, especially within cross-sectional studies. Where child traits were measured, the feeding practice appeared to be responsive to the child, therefore restriction was applied to children with a high BMI and pressure to eat applied to children with a lower BMI. Behaviors and styles that are specific to the feeding context are consistently associated with child BMI. However, since obesity emerges over time, it is through longitudinal, carefully measured (through questionnaire and observation) studies which take account of child appetite and temperament that the association between parenting style, feeding style, specific feeding practices, and child obesity will be understood.

Abstract:The terminal ends of most human chromosomes are G-band negative and are usually gene-rich, containing a higher than average density of genes [Niimura and Gojobori, 2002]. Microscopically discernible deletions of the terminal band of a chromosome are usually associated with significant clinical abnormality. For example, chromosome 4p deletion (Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome) and chromosome 5p deletion (cri du chat syndrome) have critical regions in the most distal 4p16 and 5p15 band, respectively [de Grouchy and Turleau, 1984]. Since the terminal band of 3p26 is an exception as it is G-band positive, one can predict that a deletion of 3p26 might be accompaniedbymilder clinical symptoms than those resulting from deletion of the terminal bands of other chromosomes. We report here clinical findings in a boy with concurrent 3p26 deletion and 8q24.3 duplication,whoseonly clinical symptom is deficient cognitive skills. We suggest that his reduced cognitive skills are more likely the result of duplication of genes on terminal 8q, rather than deletion of genes on terminal 3p. Our patient was born at term after an uneventful pregnancy with a birth weight of 3,450 g and a length of 50 cm. His developmental milestones were normal. He sat at 6 months, crawled at 9 months, and walked independently at 14 months. Psychological testing (Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale) at 3 years of age revealed a composite IQ score of 97 (range 91–103). Subsequent developmental assessments, in conjunction with his enrollment in kindergarten, showed a definitive delay in cognitive skills, speech and language skills, and fine motor skills. He was categorized as multiply disabled. His Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test III scores were at the 39th centile at 41⁄2 years and the 35th centile at 51⁄2 years. He scored solidly in the 36–41 months range but had some scattered scores in the 42– 47 months range of the test. He was first seen at the genetics clinic at 51⁄2 years of age. He was quiet, but answered simple questions himself. He had occasional staring spells and absent-mindedness. A seizure disorder was ruled out. He wore glasses for hypermetropia. He was not able to write his own name. His weight and height were between 25th and 50th centile, and head circumference was at the 75th centile. No dysmorphic feature was noted. A year later, the staring spells subsided. He needed extra help in kindergarten and was placed in a special education class in the first grade. A chromosome study was subsequently requested to rule out the possibility of a sex chromosome aberration. He was last seen at 91⁄2 years of age; he remained a friendly and enthusiastic boy, but had become more talkative over the years and stuttering had become apparent. He continued to receive physical, occupational, and speech/language therapies.
"It Hurts a Latina When They Tell Us Anything About Our Children": Implications of Mexican-Origin Mothers' Maternal Identities, Aspirations, and Attitudes About Cultural Transmission for Childhood Obesity Prevention

Abstract:Background: This qualitative study explored values, attitudes, and beliefs held by Mexican-origin mothers of preschool-aged children to enhance understanding of cultural influences on behaviors associated with childhood obesity risk. Methods: During face-to-face interviews, 39 Mexican-origin mothers of preschool-aged children discussed their hopes for their children, their image of the perfect mother, Mexican and American foods, why they taught their children about these foods, and their opinions about television (TV) viewing language. Results: Participants wanted their children to become successful, "good" people, which necessitated doing well in school. Mothers also wanted their children to know them, which required understanding the mothers' Mexican backgrounds. Mothers wanted their children to maintain Mexican values and identities. Some mothers viewed American culture as harmful. Many participants prepared their child for going to Mexico by exposing them to Mexican culture and foods. Some mothers fed their children American foods to prepare them for school. Perceptions of American foods generally reflected stereotypical unhealthy foods. TV helped teach children Spanish and English. Being a good mother was core to participants' identities; thus, hearing about child overweight made some mothers feel like failures. Conclusions: Health promotion programs may be more salient to mothers if they: underscore how a healthy weight can help children in school; teach mothers to prepare healthy American foods that their children will encounter in kindergarten; assist mothers in teaching their children about Mexico; and present information about childhood obesity in ways that reinforce what mothers are doing well, enhance mothers' self-efficacy, and allay feelings of failure.

Abstract:Aim: Parental behaviors and the home environment are two of the most effective ways to adopt healthy eating and active lifestyles. For this reason, it is crucial to understand children's nutritional habits, analyze the dynamics related to parental factors, diagnose and treat childhood obesity in the early period, and prevent adulthood obesity. This study aimed to explore how parenting influences children's nutritional status, physical activity, and BMI. Methods: The study involved 596 children with their parents. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the survey method. The survey consists of descriptive information (age, gender, educational status), anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits, Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Scale (FNPA), International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and 24-hour dietary recall. The Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR) was applied to assess dietary adequacy. Results: Most mothers and fathers were overweight or obese(61.6 % and 68.7%, respectively). 38.6% of boys and 23.1% of girls were overweight or obese. The FNPA score was positively correlated with MAR(p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that children's BMI was negatively correlated with FNPA score, while maternal BMI and father's BMI were positively correlated(p<0.05). Furthermore, dietary energy was not associated with the child's BMI but with dietary adequacy(p<0.05). There was no evidence that family impacted children's physical activity. Conclusion: This study supports the parenting that influences children's dietary intake and BMI. Adequate and balanced nutrition, regardless of dietary energy, may affect children's body weight. Family plays a significant role in influencing and forming children's lifestyle-related behaviors. Children's healthy eating and physical exercise habits can be encouraged through school-based programs involving families.

Abstract:Overweight and obesity in adolescents has become a serious public health problem worldwide and Mexico City is no exception. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiological panorama of overweight and obesity related to eating habits, physical activity and the concurrent presence of depression and anxiety in adolescents from high schools in Mexico City. Anthropometric measurements were taken from 2710 adolescents from 33 participating high schools. Likewise, a previously validated eating habit and physical activity questionnaire was administered, which consisted of four different sections, where each of the sections focused on key aspects of the participants' lifestyle: (1) eating habits, (2) intake of non-recommended foods, (3) food and company environment, and (4) physical activity. Moreover, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for anxiety and depression was applied. In this study, a high prevalence of overweight and obesity (26.5% overweight and 20.0% obese) was found in adolescents from high schools in Mexico City. Only 13.14% of participants had adequate eating habits and 18.19% physical activity habits. An association was found between having inadequate eating habits and obesity in adolescent women (OR = 1.95; CI 1.009–3.76). Additionally, associations were observed between depression symptoms and obesity (OR = 5.68, CI 1.36–32.81; p = 0.01), while anxiety was associated with underweight and obesity adjusted by other dietary habits and psychological factors. Therefore, it is important to identify adolescents with overweight or obesity and establish prevention strategies for weight control in this age group, promoting healthy eating, physical activity and education in mental health.

Abstract:Objectives: Mexico exhibits one of the highest prevalence rates of overweight and obesity globally, accompanied by a surge in non-communicable diseases, which in turn leads to elevated mortality rates. Existing efforts to address rising obesity rates have shown limited effectiveness. Maternal weight, diet, and physical activity (PA) during pregnancy affect the mother's and offspring's health. Despite the importance of establishing and engaging in healthy behaviors during pregnancy, little is known about which factors impact these behaviors among pregnant women in Mexico. This study explored perspectives on factors impacting healthy dietary behaviors and PA in pregnancy from pregnant women and health care professionals in Mexico. Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 11 pregnant women and 12 health care professionals working in prenatal care. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis in a stepwise inductive approach. Results: Classifying factors at the 1) individual level, 2) relational level, and 3) health care system level, three overall themes emerged. At the individual level, challenges with lack of time and competing priorities as well as knowledge of healthy dietary behaviors and PA were identified. At the relational level, influencing factors encompassed financial, social, and emotional support along with descriptive norms. At the health care system level, guidelines for PA during pregnancy and the quality of care were noted. Conclusions: This study identified factors impacting healthy dietary behaviors and PA in pregnancy in Mexico. Important considerations for future interventions include addressing sociocultural norms around healthy dietary behaviors and PA in pregnancy and involving pregnant women's families, closest social networks, and health care professionals working at the prenatal care unit.
Can Parental Body Dissatisfaction Predict That of Children? A Study on Body Dissatisfaction, Body Mass Index, and Desire to Diet in Children Aged 9-11 and Their Families

Abstract:Body image has been associated with self-care and the assumption of either healthy habits or poor diets and eating disorders. As a vital element in the formation of a positive body image, the role of the family in childhood has been highlighted by a few studies. This study aimed to assess whether children's body dissatisfaction could be predicted by their parents' body dissatisfaction, body mass index (BMI), and approach to change. The sample consisted of 581 participants (366 parents and 215 children). The following instruments were used: anthropometric data, the Brief Scale of Body Dissatisfaction for Children, the IMAGE questionnaire (approach to change and drive for muscularity subscales), and the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness subscales). The results indicated that 19% of children, 22.8% of mothers, and 70.2% of fathers were overweight or obese. The multiple regression models developed for boys and girls explained 60 and 57% of the variance in body dissatisfaction, respectively. Several variables attributable to the mother (higher approach to change, higher drive for thinness, and higher BMI) and to the boys themselves (drive for muscularity, approach to change, and having a high BMI percentile) predicted a higher level of body dissatisfaction. For girls, only variables regarding themselves (approach to change, age, and BMI percentile) explained their body dissatisfaction. Relationships with the traits of the father were not detected for both models. The influence of sociocultural factors on the construction of gender and the negative consequences of mothers' dieting for aesthetic purposes, on the development of children's body image, are discussed.
Hispanic Mothers' Views of the Fathers' Role in Promoting Healthy Behaviors at Home: Focus Group Findings

Abstract:Background: Overweight and obesity prevention interventions rarely take into account the unique role of fathers in promoting healthy home environments. Objective: To use qualitative methodology to examine the views of Hispanic mothers of children aged 2 to 5 years regarding fathers' roles in promoting healthy behaviors at home. Design: Nine focus groups were conducted in Spanish with Hispanic mothers of preschool-aged children (N=55) from October to December 2015. Participants/settings: Hispanic mothers were recruited from churches, community agencies, and preschools located in five Zip codes in the southwest part of Oklahoma City, OK. Analysis: Questions examined the views of Hispanic mothers regarding fathers' roles in promoting healthy behaviors at home. Focus groups were audiorecorded, transcribed in Spanish, translated into English, and coded and analyzed for themes by two coders using NVivo version 10 software. Results: Four themes were identified: fathers' disagreement with mothers about food preferences and preparation, fathers' support for child's healthy eating, fathers' support for child's physical activity, and fathers' lack of support for a healthy home food environment. Fathers' traditional expectations about the type of foods and portion sizes adults should eat conflicted with mothers' meal preparations. Mothers reported that, although they favored eating low-calorie meals, the meals fathers preferred eating were high-calorie meals (eg, quesadillas). In general, fathers supported healthy eating and physical activity behaviors for their children. Supportive behaviors for children included preparing healthy meals, using healthier cooking methods, grocery shopping with their children for healthy foods, and asking the child to participate in household chores and/or play sports. Fathers' unsupportive behaviors included bringing high-calorie foods, such as pizza, and sugary drinks into the home, using sweets and savory foods for emotion regulation, and displaying an indulgent parental feeding style. Conclusions: Mothers' views of fathers' perceived roles in child eating and physical activity, and maintaining a healthy eating environment, have important implications for the success of promoting healthy behaviors in the homes of Hispanic families.

Abstract:Child obesity has become a major concern of health researchers. This study explores the association between parental feeding practices and children's weight status. The study also examines whether maternal and paternal feeding practices lead to significantly different children's weight outcomes. By analyzing samples of 312 children (aged 9-11 and 13-15) and their parents, randomly selected from the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area, the results show that parental feeding practices are linked to children's weight status. The finding that maternal and paternal feeding practices do not have significantly different effects on children's weight highlights an equivalent role of maternal and paternal feeding practices in shaping children's weight status.

Abstract:Background: Latino children in the United States (US) have a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity compared to white children. Previous studies suggest that acculturation to the US is associated with health behaviors such as diet, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity. However, the role of parental acculturation remains understudied, particularly with the use of validated measures. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate parental acculturation and its association with parental interpersonal factors and health behaviors in the preschool-aged child. Methods: Data were analyzed from 187 Latino parents in Nevada. Parents completed a self-reported, cross-sectional survey. Acculturation was assessed using Norris' 4-item validated acculturation measure. The average age of the preschool-aged children was 45.5 months, and their mean BMI percentile was 96.4% (SD ± 18.7). The mean parental acculturation score was 2.1 (SD ± 1.2). Children were physically active an average of 4.9 (SD ± 2.0) days per week. After controlling for covariates, the results indicated that parental acculturation was positively associated with physical activity and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. However, parental acculturation was not associated with child BMI percentile, or the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and sweet snacks. Conclusions: These findings can inform future research on culturally tailored intervention strategies to boost physical activity and reduce sugar-sweetened beverage intake among Latino preschool-aged children.
