Abstract:Dietary deficiency of selenium (Se) is a global health threat related to low Se concentrations in crops. Southern China has abundant Se-rich land resources, but the cadmium (Cd) pollution problem is prominent, which may lead to Cd exceeding the safety standard in Se-rich crops. Therefore, it is important to delineate Se-rich land without Cd pollution in order to develop green Se-rich agriculture. Based on soil/sediment geochemical survey data covering 2.3 million km 2 of southern China, this study analysed the concentration and spatial distribution of Se and Cd, discussed their enrichment mechanisms and proposed suggestions for the safe use of Se-rich land. The results showed that the soil/sediments in southern China were significantly enriched in Se and Cd, and the median values were 0.31 mg·kg −1 and 221 μg·kg −1 , which were 1.8 times and 2.5 times the national soil background values, respectively. In addition, a significant positive correlation was observed between Se and Cd, indicating that Cd contamination in Se-rich soils frequently exceeded the pollution limit. According to statistics, Se-rich land accounted for 32.13 % of southern China. However, due to the co-enrichment of Se and Cd, areas without Cd pollution accounted for only one-third of the total Se-rich area. In particular, the areas with co-enrichment of SeCd are primarily distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, western Hubei, northwestern Zhejiang, western Hunan, southern Hunan and northern Guangdong. The enrichment of Se is predominantly associated with parent rocks (black and carbonate rocks). At the same time, the enrichment of Cd is influenced by the parent rocks and PbZn mineralisation and mining activities. Three recommendations for managing Se-rich land were proposed: imposing restrictions on the utilisation of heavily contaminated Se-rich land for agricultural production, adopting a rational approach towards utilising lightly polluted Se-rich land and actively promoting the development of Se-rich agriculture in uncontaminated Se-rich areas. In the future, it is necessary to develop technologies that simultaneously enhance Se absorption while inhibiting Cd absorption in order to safely exploit Se-rich lands affected by Cd pollution.

Abstract:In methanol intoxication, increased levels of the metabolite formate are associated with metabolic acidosis and an increased risk for ocular and neurological dysfunction. A simple method for plasma formate measurement by adaptation of a manual enzymatic assay to a Cobas Mira S analyzer is presented. Six microliters of sample is incubated for 5 min with buffer containing nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide. Fifteen microliters of a suspension of formate dehydrogenase is then added. Absorbance at 340 nm is measured every 25 s. The NADH produced when formate is oxidized is stoichiometric to the amount of formate. The method is sensitive, reproducible, and specific and has a broad measurement range. The frozen reagents are stable for at least six months, so the described method can be applied to irregular and semi-urgent requests. A recent case is reported.
Safe Utilization and Zoning on Natural Selenium-Rich Land Resources: a Case Study of the Typical Area in Enshi County, China

Abstract:Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element. However, Se in soil is often accompanied by heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), because of geological background. The safe utilization of such Se-rich land resources remains a challenge. A typical Se-rich area located in Enshi County, China, was systematically investigated with geochemical and epidemiological methods. The results show that Se in the topsoil is 0.84 ± 1.39 μg/g, whereas that of Cd is 0.93 ± 1.63 μg/g. And the concentration of Se and Cd in corn is 0.22 ± 0.96 μg/g and 0.15 ± 0.32 μg/g, respectively, which is mainly related to the high concentrations in soil. The benchmark dose limit of urinary Cd for β2-microglobulin in subjects (n = 160) was calculated as 3.27 µg/g Cr. In view of crop–human dose effect and combining the relationship among the concentrations of crops and human biomarkers and the concentrations of crops and topsoil, this study established the models of land resource safety zoning. With that, the risk screening value of Cd in the soil could be obtained as 0.98 μg/g in this typical area. The proportions of priority utilization, safe utilization, and strict management of agricultural land area were 58.85%, 22.90%, and 18.25%, respectively, in Enshi, China. These results could provide scientific support for local agricultural development and ecological sustainability.

Abstract:To investigate the characteristics of elements in selenium and cadmium rich soil and the ecological risk of local agricultural products in the typical heavy metal high background area of Chongqing,Taking the Se and Cd enriched soil in study area as a research object, The effects of Cd and Se on agricultural products were studied by collecting and analyzing the element contents and available contents of soil and agricultural products samples, The results showed that The pH value of soil in the study area is 6.89 ~ 8.22, which is alkaline and rich in organic matter; The study area belongs to the typical high background area of heavy metals. The content of Cd in the soil is 0.52 ~ 1.84 mg·kg-1, the average value is 1.26 mg·kg-1, the content of se is 0.41 ~ 0.77 mg·kg-1, the average value is 0.64 mg·kg-1, and its element characteristics are rich in selenium and cadmium; The activation rates of Cd and Se were 6.63 ~ 28.26% and 0.17 ~ 1.58% respectively; The concentration of Cd and Se in the soil of the study area may be mainly from the parent material of soil, and it is closely related to the content of organic matter in the soil. The local agricultural products are less affected by the high background value of heavy metals in the soil, and there is no excessive Cd in the agricultural products, among which potatoes and sweet potatoes have reached the standard of selenium enrichment. The research suggests that the soil rich in selenium and cadmium in the study area may come from the soil parent material, which is caused by the natural geological background and closely related to the content of organic matter in the soil. The activation rate of Cd and Se in the soil is low, which has little impact on the ecological risk of local agricultural products. This paper has important guiding significance for the development and utilization of selenium-rich soil resources in typical heavy metal high background areas.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) is the essential component of selenoenzymes and contributes to antioxidant defenses. The capability of Se to antagonize the toxicity of heavy metals makes it an essential trace element for human and plant health. Soils derived from black shales are naturally enriched with Se; however, these soils often contain high geological cadmium (Cd), due to the weathering of black shales rich in Cd and Se. Cadmium, as a known Group I carcinogen, could induce damage to various organs. This therefore poses a major challenge for safe cultivation of Se-rich land resources. In this study, a total of 247 paired soil-crop samples were collected from a typical farmland derived from black shales. The concentrations of Cd and Se in the samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to evaluate potential health risks associated with Cd exposure. Cadmium was the critical pollutant in the study area, with the average value of 1.53 mg/kg. Moreover, both children and adults living in the area had a significant non-carcinogenic health risk. Additional health risk assessments revealed that diet was the main contributor for both children and adults among the four pathways (diet > soil ingestion > soil dermal adsorption > soil inhalation). Furthermore, our results revealed that leguminous vegetables and maize were ideal for this site due to their high Se and low Cd accumulation abilities. These findings provide support for adjusting planting structure by variety screening to mitigate the health risk induced by Cd.

Abstract:Enshi, China, is renowned as "Selenium(Se) Capital" where widely distributed soils derived from Permian parent rocks are notably rich in Se, as well as metals, particularly cadmium(Cd). However, the soil enrichment and crop uptake of Se and metals in these high-Se and high-Cd areas are not well understood. To propose the optimal crop planting plan to ensure the safety of agricultural products, we investigated the soils and corresponding typical crops (rice, tea, and maize). The results showed significant soil enrichment of elements, with average contents (mg/kg) as follows: Cr (185), Zn (126), Cu (58.8), Pb (31.1), As (15.7), Se (6.85), Cd (5.41), and Hg (0.211). All soil Se contents were above 0.4 mg/kg, indicating Se-rich soils. Se primarily existed in an organic-bound form, accounting for an average proportion of 61.3%, while Cd was mainly exchangeable, with an average of 62.5%. Cd exhibited higher activity according to the Relative Index of Activity (RIA). Nemerow single-factor index analysis confirmed significant soil contamination, with Cd showing the highest level, followed by Cr and Cu, while Pb had the lowest level. Tea exhibited a high Se rich ratio (82.0%) without exceeding the Cd standard. In contrast, corn and rice had relatively lower Se-rich ratios (42.0% and 51.5% respectively) and high rates of Cd exceeding the standard, at 49.0% and 61.0% respectively. Canonical analysis revealed that rice was more influenced by soil factors related to Se and Cd compared to maize and tea crops. Therefore, tea cultivation in the Enshi Permian soil area is recommended for safe crop production. This study provides insights into the enrichment, fractionation, and bioavailability of soil Se, Cd, and other metals in the high-Se and high-Cd areas of permian stratas in Enshi, offering a scientific basis for selecting local food crops and producing safe Se-rich agricultural products in the region.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination of selenium (Se)-rich soils may jeopardize the nutritional benefits of Se-biofortified crops. This study employed diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and DIFS (DGT-induced fluxes in soils) model to understand the interdependency and driving factors of Se and Cd distribution and desorption kinetics across 50 soils from south China with naturally elevated levels. DGT-labile Se was the highest (up to 2.66 mu g L-1) in non-carbonate/shale-derived soils, while Cd was maximal (5.53 mu g L-1) in carbonate-based soils, reflecting soil background concentrations and soil characteristics. Over one-third of the soils showed labile Se:Cd molar ratio below 0.7, suggesting Cd phytotoxicity risks. The DIFS-derived response times (T-c) and desorption rate constants (k(-1)) suggested that Se was resupplied to the soil solution faster than Cd in soils with higher pH and SOM level, but Se resupply was still restricted due to the rapid depletion of its labile pool. As the first study of Se and Cd release kinetics in soils, our results reveal dependence on soil parent materials, with low labile Se:Cd soils presenting greater Cd hazards. By elucidating Se and Cd lability and interactions in soils, our findings help to inform management strategies to balance reduced Cd risk with adequate Se availability.

Abstract:Selenium (Se), as an essential microelement, can be supplied through Se-biofortified food from Se-rich soils and associated farming practices for human health, while it can also cause eco-risks if overapplied. In this study, a multi-scale spatiotemporal meta-analysis was conducted to guide sustainable Se-rich farming in China by combining a long-term survey with a reviewed database. The weighted mean concentration, spatial distribution of soil Se, nationwide topsoil Se variation from cropping impacts and its bioavailability-based ecological risks were assessed and quantified. The results showed that the weighted mean content (0.3 mg kg −1 ) of China was slightly higher than that of previous nationwide topsoil Se surveys, as more Se-rich areas were found in recent high-density sampling surveys. Cropping has overall reduced Se content by 9.5% from farmland across China and deprived more with the increase in farming rotation driven by geo-climatic conditions. Long-term cropping removed Se from Se-rich areas but accumulated it in Se-deficient areas. Additionally, the bioavailable Se content of topsoil in China ranged from 0 to 332 μg kg −1 , and the bioavailability-based eco-risks indicated that high eco-risks only existed in overfertilized and extremely high-Se soils, such as in Enshi, Ziyang and some coalfield areas. This work provides evidence for the development of sustainable Se-rich farming with proper utilization of soil Se resources, simultaneously protecting the soil eco-environment.

Abstract:In order to improve the product quality of crops, the characteristics of the selenium-rich soil in the heavy metal high background area and its impact on the main crops are studied. Analyze the bioavailability and existence of selenium element, and obtain the classification standard of soil selenium content. Taking Shitai County in Anhui Province as the research area, soil samples from this area were collected, and the results of the collection were made into a field sampling report. The sampling results were analyzed by statistical methods to obtain the measurement results of the selenium content in the soil of the study area. Finally, the LSMM model was established to realize the effective analysis of the characteristics of selenium-rich soil in the heavy metal high background area. The research results show that under different heavy metal pollution conditions, the growth of corn, rice and soybean crops is different. Generally speaking, heavy metals will restrict the healthy growth of crops; the effect of selenium absorption activity will directly or indirectly affect the growth and development of crops; the selenium enrichment rate of crops shows the characteristics of corn>rice>soybeans.

Abstract:Seleniferous soil and crops have recently attracted attention worldwide. Cultivating seleniferous crops in the absence of heavy metals is greatly challenging. This study aimed to develop approaches for the safe exploitation of seleniferous soil. We collected 246 pairs of rice grain samples and their corresponding rhizosphere soil samples and 8542 topsoil samples from Binyang and Xingbin in Guangxi. The Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Se contents of soil and rice grain samples were tested. Several soil properties, including CaO, Mn, Mo, and S contents; total organic carbon content; and pH were also measured. Soil and rice grain samples that were classified as seleniferous accounted for 85.77% and 88% of all samples, respectively. More than 30% of soil and rice grain samples were potentially polluted by Cd. The percentage of seleniferous rice grain samples increased as soil Se concentration increased. Notably, however, the percentage of Cd-polluted rice grain samples decreased with the increase in soil Cd concentration. Models for the prediction of BAFs of heavy metal and Se were accurately established on the basis of significant partial correlations between log10 (BAFs) and log10 (soil properties). Farmlands with seleniferous soil under preferential protection and with safely exploited seleniferous soil accounted for 82.61% of the total study area. Sites that require remediation or land-use changes accounted for only 14.7% of the total study area and were mainly distributed in the center of the study area.
Distribution and soil threshold of selenium in the cropland of southwest mountainous areas in China

Abstract:To investigate the distribution characteristics of selenium (Se) in mountainous soil-crop systems and examine the threshold value of Se-rich soil, 275 soil samples and 153 associated crop samples (rice, maize, tea, nuts, konjac, mushrooms, buckwheat, and coffee) were collected in Ximeng County, a typical mountainous area in southwest China. The total Se, available Se, organic matter, pH, sampling point elevation, and crop Se content were analyzed to examine the distribution characteristics of soil Se and the ability of primary crops to enrich Se in Ximeng County. Random forest and multiple regression models were established to identify the factors influencing the available soil Se and the crop Se enrichment coefficient. Finally, the Se-rich soil threshold was examined based on the total Se, available Se, and Se content in primary crops (rice, maize, and tea). The results showed soil Se resource abundance in the study region, with high Se soil accounting for 64.72% of the entire area. The soil Se content displayed significant spatial autocorrelation. The average Se enrichment coefficient of the main cultivated crops included mushrooms > nuts > rice > coffee > tea > maize > buckwheat > konjac. The total Se content in the soil had the highest impact on the available Se content in the soil and the Se enrichment coefficient of crops. A Se-rich soil threshold of 0.3 mg·kg −1 was used for rice and maize, while that of tea was 0.4 mg·kg −1 . This result provided a theoretical basis for developing and utilizing Se resources in mountainous soil in southwestern China and dividing the Se-rich soil threshold.

Abstract:The use of selenium (Se)-rich soils in China is an effective method for rural revitalization, but assessment of heavy metals is essential prior to the development of Se-rich soils. This study was focused on the Jiangjin district, a typical Se-rich area located in Sichuan Basin of China, to investigate contamination, influencing factors, and sources of As, Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn based on 156 topsoil samples. This study analyzed and compared the enrichment factor (EF), Nemerow index (P<sub>N</sub>), geographical information system (GIS), and positive matrix factorization (PMF). Results demonstrate that the average values of As, Cu, Cd, Sb, and Zn in topsoil were higher than the soil background values of western Chongqing by approximately 1.75, 1.11, 1.27, 1.71, and 2.58 times, respectively, indicating that some heavy metals have been enriched in the soils. The polluted areas of As, Cu, Cd, and Zn in topsoil were mainly distributed in the northern and central Jiangjin district, whereas high-Sb soils were located in the southeast. The Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Sb were concentrated in Se-rich soils, indicating that heavy metals pollution should be carefully considered for the utilization of Se-rich soils. Four potential sources of heavy metals were found in this study area: 1) the parent materials (Cr, Ni, Cu); 2) industrial activities with high coal consumption (As); 3) mechanical and chemical industrial activities (Zn, Sb); and 4) transportation and agricultural activities (Pb, Cd). These observations provide a scientific basis for the development, utilization, and protection of Se-rich soil resources.

Fertilizer application alters cadmium and selenium bioavailability in soil-rice system with high geological background levels

Abstract:The co-occurrence of cadmium (Cd) pollution and selenium (Se) deficiency commonly exists in global soils, especially in China. As a result, there is great interest in developing practical agronomic strategies to simultaneously achieve Cd remediation and Se mobilization in paddy soils, thereby enhancing food quality/safety. To this end, we conducted a field-plot trial on soils having high geological background levels of Cd (0.67 mg kg-1) and Se (0.50 mg kg-1). We explored 12 contrasting fertilizers (urea, potassium sulfate (K2SO4), calcium-magnesium-phosphate (CMP)), amendments (manure and biochar) and their combinations on Cd/Se bioavailability. Soil pH, total organic carbon (TOC), soil available Cd/Se, Cd/Se fractions and Cd/Se accumulation in different rice components were determined. No significant differences existed in mean grain yield among treatments. Results showed that application of urea and K2SO4 decreased soil pH, whereas the CMP fertilizer and biochar treatments increased soil pH. There were no significant changes in TOC concentrations. Three treatments (CMP, manure, biochar) significantly decreased soil available Cd, whereas no treatment affected soil available Se at the maturity stage. Four treatments (CMP, manure, biochar and manure＋urea＋CMP＋K2SO4) achieved our dual goal of Cd reduction and Se enrichment in rice grain. Structural equation modeling (SEM) demonstrated that soil available Cd and root Cd were negatively affected by pH and organic matter (OM), whereas soil available Se was positively affected by pH. Moreover, redundancy analysis (RDA) showed strong positive correlations between soil available Cd, exchangeable Cd and reducible Cd with grain Cd concentration, as well as between pH and soil available Se with grain Se concentration. Further, there was a strong negative correlation between residual Cd/Se (non-available fraction) and grain Cd/Se concentrations. Overall, this study identified the primary factors affecting Cd/Se bioavailability, thereby providing new guidance for achieving safe production of Se-enriched rice through fertilizer/amendment management of Cd-enriched soils.
Study on the Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Different Soil-Crop Systems and Ecological Risk Assessment: A Case Study of Jiao River Basin

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bio-accumulation of different soil-crop systems (SCSs) for heavy metals (HMs) and the geo-accumulation of different agricultural growing regions. The ecological risk (ER) assessment was conducted to understand the impact of intensive agricultural production on the environment. To achieve this aim, four typical crops, wheat, corn, potatoes, and leeks grown in the Jiao River Basin (JRB), were selected as the research objects. The concentrations of eight HMs, including copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) in crop tissue and soil were detected. The statistical analysis, including the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), geostatistical analysis, correlation and cluster analysis were then used to evaluate soil contamination and determine the source types of HMs. The results show that the average concentrations of eight HMs in the soil follow the order: Zn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cu > As > Cd > Hg and the calculated concentration coefficients (K) vary from 0.41–1.12, indicating relative scarcity in sources of HMs. All the Igeo values of HMs are less than 0 except the Igeo of Cr within potato-farmland is from 0 to 1, illustrating that the soil in JRB is uncontaminated. The correlation and cluster analysis reveal that Cu, Zn, and Cd have a strong relationship with each other and the relationship between Pb, Ni, and Cr is general. The content of eight HMs in different crops varies greatly and most of them are within the scope of National Food Safety Standards—Limit of Pollutants in food of China. The bioconcentration factors (BCF) indicate that wheat, corn, potato, and leek have strong bio-accumulation ability of Cu, Zn, and Cd. The ecological risk factor (Er) shows that JRB is in low risk of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, and As; however, the risk of Cr and Hg are mostly low, characterized by partially dotted moderate risk. The risk index (RI) is mainly moderate with partially low risk distributed in planar and high risk distributed in point.

Abstract:High cadmium (Cd) concentrations widely occured in selenium (Se)-rich soils, which has been an important obstacle in the usage of Se-rich soils. There is still no special information detailing the enrichment process and mechanism of Cd in Se-rich soils. 4474 soils and 21 rocks in Lanshan District were sampled to detect its enrichment process. The surface soils have Cd concentrations of 0.01–9.41 mg·kg −1 (an average of 0.16 mg·kg −1 ). The soil Cd concentrations were significantly correlated with soil Se concentrations. The relatively higher-Cd surface soils are distributed in Lower-middle Ordovician carbonate areas with Se-rich soils and Quaternary areas with typical anthropic activities. Surface soils in Ordovician carbonate area have the highest Cd concentrations. Soil Cd concentrations are significantly correlated with sulfophil elements (Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), Lead (Pb) and Arsenic (As) etc.), Ca (Calcium) concentrations and soil organic carbon (SOC). The soil and rock samples from different geological units also confirmed soil Cd concentrations developing from Ordovician carbonates were higher than those from other rocks. The results indicate the soil Cd concentrations were the complex consequences of bedrock, soil-forming processes and anthropogenic activities. Higher Ca concentrations and more reduction environments result in high-Cd bedrock. CaCO 3 leaching and alkaline pH, which are the special soil-forming process of carbonates, enrich Cd in soils. Agricultural and industrial activities also affect soil Cd concentrations. An enrichment model of Cd in Se-rich soils is forwarded.

Abstract:To understand the main factors influencing the translocation and accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in soil-crop systems in typical karst areas, 68 sets of paddy soil and rice grain samples were collected in Guangxi Province. These were used to analyze Cd concentrations and soil properties (pH, organic matter (OM) content, oxide content, and texture). Spearman's correlation coefficients and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to examine the effects of soil properties on Cd concentrations and identify the main influencing factors. The studied soils were highly enriched in iron oxide (TFe2O3), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and manganese oxide (MnO) compared to background levels, with average concentrations of 20.2%, 19.0%, and 0.2%, respectively. However, the soils are relatively depleted in silica (SiO2), with an average concentration of 41.0%. The soils are strongly weathered and leached in study area, giving rise to rich occurrences of Fe-Mn nodules. The concentrations of TFe2O3 and MnO in the study soils were significantly correlated with soil Cd, rice seed Cd, and the Cd bioconcentration factor (BCF). The PCA analysis further showed that TFe2O3 and MnO in soils were the main factors affecting the migration and enrichment of Cd while soil pH, OM, and Al2O3 had less of an influence. Furthermore, SiO2 and soil texture indirectly affected the migration and enrichment of Cd. It is suggested that the Fe-Mn nodules effectively adsorb and immobilize Cd in the study area soils, acting as a heavy metal scavenger that reduced the biological accessibility of Cd.

Abstract:Se-enriched agricultural base in Boshan,Zibo city was selected as the study area,where soil samples were collected.The content of total selenium,available selenium,physicochemical properties of the soil and heavy metals were determined.Moreover,soil profile distribution and spatial difference of total selenium and available selenium were analyzed.The results showed that the content of total selenium in surface soils (0-10 cm) ranged from 0.080 to 1.290 mg·kg-1,with a mean of 0.360 mg·kg-1,which was higher than the national level (0.290 mg· kg-1).The average content of available selenium in soil was 0.033 mg·kg-1,accounting for 10.16％ of the total selenium.Profile distribution of total selenium showed characteristics of surface accumulation.Profile distribution of available selenium showed characteristics of surface accumulation,uniform distribution and bottom accumulation.The content of selenium in soil parent material played an important role in accumulating selenium in soil.Available selenium was significantly correlated with soil organic carbon and total nitrogen.Selenium had a significant correlation with cadmium in the study area and there might exist accociation effects between selenium and heavy metals.The classification standard of available selenium content still needs to be discussed.The available selenium evaluation system needs to be built for the development of Se-enriched agriculture.Overall,total selenium and available selenium should be considered together.
Effects of selenium on biogeochemical cycles of cadmium in rice from flooded paddy soil systems in the alluvial Indus Valley of Pakistan

Abstract:This study delves into the pollution status, assesses the effects of Se on Cd biogeochemical pathways, and explores their interactions in nutrient-rich paddy soil-rice ecosystems through 500 soil-rice samples in Pakistan. The results showed that 99.6 % and 12.8 % of soil samples exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) allowable Se and Cd levels (7 and 0.35 mg/kg). In comparison, 23 % and 6 % of the grain samples exceeded WHO's allowable Se and Cd levels (0.3 and 0.2 mg/kg), respectively. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model results further revealed spatial nonstationarity, confirming diverse associations between dependent variables (Se and Cd in rice grain) and independent variables from paddy soil and plant tissues (root and shoot), such as Soil Organic Matter (SOM), pH, Se, and Cd concentrations. High Se:Cd molar ratios (>1) and a negative correlation (r = -0.16, p < 0.01) between the Cd translocation factor (Cd in rice grain/Cd in root) and Se in roots suggest that increased root Se levels inhibit the transfer of Cd from roots to grains. The inverse correlation between Se and Cd in paddy grains was further characterized as Se deficiency, no risk, high Cd risk, Se risk, Cd risk, and Se-Cd co-exposure risk. There was no apparent risk for human co-consumption in 42.6 % of grain samples with moderate Se and low Cd. The remaining categories indicate differing degrees of risk. In the study area, 31 % and 20 % of grain samples with low Se and Cd indicate Se deficiency and risk, respectively. High Se and low Cd levels in rice samples suggest a potential hazard for severe Se exposure due to frequent rice consumption. This study not only systematically evaluates the pollution status of paddy-soil systems in Pakistan but also provides a reference to thoroughly contemplate the development of a scientific approach for evaluating human risks and the potential dangers associated with paddy soils and rice, specifically in regions characterized by low Se and low Cd concentrations, as well as those with moderate Se and high Cd concentrations. SYNOPSIS: This study is significant for understanding the effects of Se on Cd geochemical cycles and their interactions in paddy soil systems in Pakistan.

Abstract:The abnormal enrichment of cadmium (Cd) in soil caused by rock weathering and mining activities is an issue in southern China. Although the soil Cd content in these regions is extremely high, the bioavailability of Cd in the soils differs significantly. The carbonate area (CBA) and tin-mining area (TIA) in Hezhou City were investigated to determine the primary features of soil Cd mobility in these regions and improve environmental management. Lateral and vertical spatial distributions revealed different accumulation and migration mechanisms of soil Cd in the CBA and TIA. Further analyses revealed that mining activities and geological weathering resulted in different soil geochemical parameters, thus yielding significantly lower levels of Cd in rice grains in the CBA than in the TIA. The random forest (RF) model predicted the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) (R 2 = 0.69) better than the support vector machine (SVM) model (R 2 = 0.68). Subsequently, a novel land management scheme was proposed based on soil Cd and the prediction of Cd in rice to optimize the spatial resources of agricultural land and ensure the safety of rice for consumption. This study provides a novel approach for land management in Cd-contaminated areas.

Abstract:Se-enrichment characteristics in water-soil-plant system and dietary Se status of local residents in seleniferous areas were investigated. Results showed that Se in well water might mainly derived from Se-enriched shales and coals, and Se mobility in seleniferous soils was relatively low with less than 6.7% bioavailable forms in high-Se areas. Soil Se with irrigation, precipitation and fertilization sources contributed more to soil Se than Se-enriched shales and coals in low-Se areas, resulting in slightly higher mobility of Se in low-Se soils. Se concentration in edible parts of main crops ranged from 0.005 mg kg−1 to 4.17 mg kg−1, and cereal plants had a higher Se-enrichment ability than tuber plants. The probable dietary Se intake (PDI) in high-Se areas was decreased to 959.3 μg d−1 in recent years, which might be attributed to tap water as drinking water in recent year rather than well water-dependent and changes in dietary structure, but still far above the permissible value of 400 μg d−1. Reducing cereal-derived dietary Se intake is an important strategy to better Se nutrition status in high-Se areas. After synthesis considerations on soil Se bioavailability and PDI of Se, the soil total Se of 4 mg kg−1 and the soil available Se content of 0.32 mg kg−1 were proposed to be the reference threshold values of soil Se excess in high-Se areas in Enshi, respectively.
