Abstract:Submerged plants constitute a vital component of shallow lake ecosystems, where water depth and sediment nitrogen‑phosphorus content are two key factors influencing their growth. This study focuses on Vallisneria natans and investigates the morphological and physiological changes of V. natans under the interaction of three water depth gradients and two different sediment nutrient levels. It explores the mechanisms through which varying sediment nutrient conditions under different water depths affect the growth of V. natans. The results indicate that both independent and interactive effects of water depth and sediment nutrient status significantly impact the morphology, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic pigment content of V. natans, with water depth having a greater influence. To adapt to increased water depth-induced light stress, V. natans responds morphologically by increasing leaf length, leaf width, and decreasing maximum root length. Physiologically, it enhances its antioxidant regulation capacity and photosynthetic efficiency by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, root vitality, and photosynthetic pigment content to counter weak light stress. However, these adaptations are insufficient to cope with excessively deep waters (200 cm). Sediment nutrient levels primarily control the growth of V. natans by affecting its root system. When sediment nitrogen and phosphorus content is lower, V. natans exhibits greater total root volume and surface area to enhance nutrient absorption efficiency. Water depth not only directly influences the growth of submerged plants but may also impact the migration and transformation of phosphorus in sediments, further exacerbating its effects on the growth of these plants, thus accelerating the regime shift of shallow lakes. Therefore, this study reveals V. natans' response strategies to varying water depths and sediment nutrient levels, determining suitable water levels and sediment nutrient conditions for its growth. These research findings provide a scientific basis for water level management and ecological restoration of submerged aquatic plants in shallow lakes.
[Effect of Nutrient Loadings on the Regulation of Water Nitrogen and Phosphorus by Vallisneria natans and Its Photosynthetic Fluorescence Characteristics]

Abstract:Submerged macrophytes are an important component of aquatic ecosystems. During the growing period, submerged macrophytes can absorb nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients to reduce pollution loadings. Shoots of submerged macrophytes can also promote the adhesion of suspended substances in water, reducing the turbidity. The release of nutrients in sediments can be suppressed by its root system, and the resuspension of sediments caused by disturbance of winds and waves can also be resisted. The role of submerged macrophytes in ecological restoration of eutrophic lakes has attracted widespread attention. In 1960, the submerged plants Vallisneria natans and Potamogeton malaianus had been the dominant species in East Taihu. However after 2002, Nymphoides peltatum, Elodea nattalii, P. malaianus, etc. have gradually taken over the dominant roles along with significant elevations of nitrogen and phosphorus levels. Nutrients in water are not the only key factors causing eutrophication of water bodies; the nutrient source for submerged plant growth affect both the purification efficiency and the photosynthetic characteristics of submerged macrophytes. Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations can inhibit the photosynthetic physiological activities of submerged macrophytes, affecting the succession of aquatic vegetation. In addition, under high nutrient conditions, the competition from periphytic algae and planktonic algae may also directly poison submerged macrophytes, leading to its degradation and disappearance. Systematic studies on the regulation and photosynthetic fluorescence response mechanism of submerged macrophytes to varied nutrient loadings are helpful in revealing their relationships. The seedlings of submerged macrophyte V. natans were transplanted in a laboratory mesocosm to study the effect of nutrient loadings on its regulation of water nitrogen and phosphorus. Three nitrogen and phosphorus loadings from low, medium, and high levels derived from nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate were setup as the aquatic medium for the plant growth. Twelve harvests were carried out to determine the evolution of nutrient removal performance of V. natans. Its photosynthetic fluorescence characteristics were measured by a pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometer (Diving-PAM). Results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus adsorption abilities of V. natans were gradually enhanced with the increase of nutrient concentrations in the range of TN ≤ 12 mg·L-1 and TP ≤ 1.0 mg·L-1. In the treatment of high nutrient concentrations (TN=12 mg·L-1 and TP=1.0 mg·L-1), the removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus reached more than 95%. V. natans preferentially absorbed ammonium nitrogen when its concentration was high. The medium nutrient concentrations (TN:8-12 mg·L-1 and TP:0.6-1.0 mg·L-1) did not significantly affect the Fv/Fm ratio of leaves. However, the low nutrient concentrations (TN=3 mg·L-1 and TP=0.3 mg·L-1) could improve the Fv/Fm ratio of leaves and were beneficial for the growth of V. natans. The inhibition of photosynthetic activity and light tolerance were enhanced with the increase in nutrient concentrations. The photosynthetic activity of V. natans gradually recovered with no significant changes in the capacity for light harvesting, when the nutrient concentrations gradually decreased in the water. Our results indicate that the high nitrogen and phosphorus loadings indeed hamper the photosynthetic capacity, which may subsequently restrain the maintenance of the dominance of V. natans in the submerged macrophyte communities.

Abstract:In shal low eutrophic lakes, submersed macrophytes are essential for maintaining a clear water state and they are significantly affected by benthic fish disturbance, light availability, and sediment types. We conducted a mesocosm experiment with benthic fish ( Misgurnus anguillicaudatus ), two light regimes, and submerged macrophyte ( Vallisneria natans ) growing in two sediment types to investigate the ecological effects of benthic fish and light regimes on water quality and the growth of submersed macrophyte. Our findings indicated that the benthic fish increased the concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total dissolved phosphorus in the overlying water. The effects of benthic fish on ammonia–nitrogen (NH4 + -N) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) contents were related to light regimes. Fish disturbance indirectly promoted the growth of macrophytes growing in sand by increasing NH4 + -N content in overlying water. However, the increasing Chl-a content stimulated by fish disturbance and high light regime reduced the growth of submersed macrophytes growing in clay due to shading. Macrophytes with different sediments had different strategies coping with light. Plants growing in sand responded to low light mainly by adjusting the leaf and root biomass allocation, whereas plants growing in clay responded to low light by physiologically adjusting the soluble carbohydrate content. The findings of this study might help restore lake vegetation to some degree, and using nutrient-poor sediment might be an appropriate method to avoid the detrimental effects of fish-mediated disturbances on the growth of submerged macrophytes.

Abstract:In order to understand the effects of water and sediment on the growth of submersed macrophyte during eutrophication of waterbody, an experiment was carried out to study the effects of water and sediment from mesotrophic and eutrophic area of Lake Donghu on the growth of Vallisneria natans. Four treatments were designed, including eutrophic and mesotrophic culture conditions, and mesotrophic condition with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus addition respectively. Indices of the growth experiments included biomass, both the number and length of leaves, number of sprout, were measured. Biochemistry indices including soluble carbohydrate content and free amino acid content were measured. The results showed that biomass, number of leaves and stolen of V natans were the highest growing in mesotrophic condition, phosphorus addition was the second, and nitrogen addition was the third. The plant in cutrophic condition showed the lowest growth. The results indicted that high trophic condition inhibit the growth of V natans significantly. Increase of inorganic nitrogen in mesotrophic water inhibited the plant more than did the increase of the phosphorus, suggesting that nitrogen enrichment during cutrophication may be more important than phosphorus for the decline of macrophytes. Soluble carbohydrate and free amino acid contents of V natans in eutrophic condition were significantly higher than those in mesotrophic conditions, indicating that carbon and nitrogen metabolism of the plant were affected. This might be attributed to excessive accumulation of N in cutrophic waters of submersed macrophyte.

Effects of Ammonia Nitrogen and Sediment Nutrient on Growth of the Submerged Plant Vallisneria natans

Abstract:In order to investigate the impacts of ammonia nitrogen concentration and the necessity of dredging, five levels of ammonia nitrogen including 0, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mg L −1 and two levels of sediments nutriments (high and low) were treated. The total biomass, leaf, root, and flower biomasses were selected as the growth indicators, while total chlorophyll (i.e., chl‐a and ‐b), malondialdehyde (MDA), and free proline as subsidiary physiological index. When ammonia‐N contents of the water column were 8–16 mg L −1 , the total biomass of Vallisneria natans in the first harvest is higher than those in the second harvest, and the total chlorophyll concentration, MDA and free proline of the plants became significantly low. It indicates that high ammonia nitrogen (>8 mg L −1 ) of the water column inhibit the growth of V. natans . The total biomass, the total chlorophyll concentration of plants in the high nutrient sediment is higher than those in the low nutrient sediment, suggesting that high sediments nutrient promote the growth of V. natans . Therefore, using V. natans for water ecological restoration, the water should meet the ammonia nitrogen content of <8 mg L −1 . Moreover, dredging eutrophication sediment is probably not necessary.

Abstract:In shallow eutrophic lakes, submersed macrophytes are essential for maintaining a clear water state, and they are affected markedly by fishes directly through herbivory and indirectly by fish-invertebrate-periphyton complexity, a pathway that presently is not well understood in subtropical lakes but probably vital to lake managements. We conducted a mesocosm study involving benthic fish (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), snails (Radix swinhoei) and submersed macrophyte (Vallisneria natans), aiming to examine whether benthic fish is detrimental to reestablishment of clear-water macrophyte-dominated state in eutrophic degraded lakes. In addition, we aimed to investigate the cascading effect that benthic fish might have on periphyton and phytoplankton and to what extent snails can alleviate this effect. Our results showed that benthic fish promoted nutrient release from the sediment and thereby facilitated the growth of phytoplankton and periphyton, leading to reduced growth of submerged macrophytes due to shading. Snails consumed the periphyton attached on the leaves of macrophytes, thereby being beneficial to the plant growth, albeit it could not fully counteract the adverse effects from benthic fish. The water quality indicators in terms of nutrients concentrations, phytoplankton biomass and light extinction coefficient along the water column was affected primarily by benthic fish, followed by macrophytes and snails. To target a clear-water condition, the water quality was best at the presence of macrophytes alone or in combination with snails, and worst at the presence of benthic fish. Our results implied that the removal of benthic fish should be a useful ecological restoration method for rehabilitation of submersed macrophytes and water quality improvement in subtropic, eutrophic, shallow lakes following external nutrient loading reduction.

Abstract:Eutrophication is one of the major threats to shallow lake ecosystems, because it causes large-scale degradation of submerged plants. N:P ratio is an important indicator to estimate nutrient supply to water bodies and guide the restoration of submerged plants. The massive input of N and P changes the structure of aquatic communities and ecological processes. However, the mechanism underlying the influence of changes in N and P content and the N:P ratio of a water body on the growth of submerged plants is still unclear. In this study, we simulated gradients of water N:P ratio in lakes in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River using outdoor mesocosm experiments. Using established generalized linear models (GLM), the effects of total nitrogen (TN) content and N:P ratio of water, phytoplankton and periphytic algae biomass, and relative growth rate (RGR) of plants on the stoichiometric characteristics of two widely distributed submerged plants, Hydrilla verticillata and Vallisneria natans, were explored. The results reveal that changes in water nutrient content affected the C:N:P stoichiometry of submerged plants. In a middle-eutrophic state, the stoichiometric characteristics of C, N, and P in the submerged plants were not influenced by phytoplankton and periphytic algae. The P content of H. verticillata and V. natans was positively correlated with their relative growth rate (RGR). As TN and N:P ratio of water increased, their N content increased and C:N decreased. These results indicate that excessive N absorption by submerged plants and the consequent internal physiological injury and growth inhibition may be the important reasons for the degradation of submerged vegetation in the process of lake eutrophication.

Abstract:Rapid expansion of juvenile fish after biomanipulation can delay the successful restoration of submerged macrophytes, leading to a turbid water status in subtropical shallow lakes. Aimed to test the effects of direct removal of juvenile crucian carp (Carassius carassius) on water quality and growth of two submerged macrophytes Vallisneria natans and Hydrilla verticillate, a short-term outdoor mesocosm experiment was conducted in the Taihu Laboratory for Lake Ecosystem Research (TLLER). The results indicated that the concentrations of TN, TP, suspended solids, and chlorophyll a decreased significantly with increasing removal density of juvenile crucian carp, thus resulting in a clear status of the water. Additionally, the mean relative growth rate of V. natans and H. verticillata in the low- and high-density removal treatments were higher than that in the controls. Moreover, the removal of juvenile crucian carp also significantly increased the stem length of V. natans, but no significant effect on that of H. verticillata. Meanwhile, the total number of V. natans and H. verticillata in the low- and high-density removal treatments was higher than that in the controls, but all of H. verticillata were lower than the initials. Our results indicated that removing juvenile crucian carp could improve the water quality, increasing relative growth rate, height, and reproduction of V. natans, and improving the survival rate of H. verticillata. The promotion of fish removal on the V. natans growth was greater than H. verticillata. The results also implied that it was necessary to continuously remove the juvenile benthivorous fish several times for restoring the submerged macrophytes in shallow lakes.

Abstract:This study investigated responses of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans to a water depth gradient of 0.3-1.5 m in shallow lakes, and examined changes of morphology, physiological parameters, leaf-epiphytic bacteria community, and water purifying ability. Results of the morphological and physiological parameters (shoot height, root length, total chlorophyll, contents of soluble protein (SP) and malondialdehyde, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, glutamine synthetase, and alkaline phosphatase) indicated that 0.9-1.2 m was the optimal water depth for planting. Vallisneria natans suffered photoinhibition at the shallow water depth of 0.3-0.6 m and lipid peroxidation damage in water 1.2-1.5 m deep. Microbial analyses indicated that at the water depth of 0.6 m, the accumulated cyanobacteria led to the suppression of microbial organics decomposition and nutrient metabolism in the leaf biofilms. The water quality indicators (chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter) also confirmed that 0.9-1.2 m was the optimal planting depth of Vallisneria natans. Growth, morphology and C/N metabolism responses of a model submersed macrophyte, Vallisneria natans, to various light regimes

Abstract:Decreased underwater light availability is one of the most important environmental factors leading to the decline in submersed macrophytes in lakes. However, previous studies mostly focused on a relatively short time scale and lack data on the continuous monitoring of plant life history traits under different light conditions. The present experiment studied the growth, morphology and C/N metabolism of a representative submersed macrophyte, Vallisneria natans, in response to various light regimes (2.8%, 7.1%, 17.1%, and 39.5% ambient light intensity) over a period of 12 months. The results showed that the total biomass and ramet number increased with increased light intensity; in contrast, individual biomass, leaf number and maximum leaf length decreased with increased light intensity. The C/N metabolism indices of V. natans indicated that leaves were the most sensitive to light availability, stems were moderately sensitive, and roots were the least sensitive. V. natans grown in an extremely low-light environment exhibited decreased soluble carbohydrate (SC) and starch and increased free amino acid (FAA) and total nitrogen (TN) levels. The increasing function of the ramet number under different light regimes was fitted. The obtained maximum environmental capacity of the ramet number (K) and the days that the ramet number reached K/2 in each treatment are useful for lake V. natans restoration and seedling cultivation in similar limited-resource environments. Harvesting partial ramets properly and maintaining the ramet number near K/2 could ensure the maximum increase rate of the population to satisfy the demand of V. natans seedlings for lake restoration. The results obtained in this study can be used for lake water level management to achieve specific purposes during submerged macrophyte recovery, such as plant height elongation or plant population quantity expansion.

Abstract:Loss of submersed macrophytes is a world-wide phenomenon occurring when shallow lakes become eutrophic due to excess nutrient loading. In addition to the well-known effect of phosphorus, nitrogen as a trigger of macrophyte decline has received increasing attention. The precise impact of high nitrogen concentrations is debated, and the role of different candidate factors may well change over the season. In this study, we conducted experiments with Vallisneria natans during the growing season (June–September) in 10 ponds subjected to substantial differences in nitrogen loading (five targeted total nitrogen concentrations: control, 2, 10, 20, and 100mgL−1) and compared the results with those obtained in our earlier published study from the low-growth season (December–April). Like in the low-growth season, growth of V. natans in summer declined with increasing ammonium (NH4) concentrations and particularly with increasing phytoplankton chlorophyll a (ChlaPhyt). Accordingly, we propose that shading by phytoplankton might be of key importance for macrophyte decline, affecting also periphyton growth as periphyton chlorophyll a (ChlaPeri) decreased with increasing ChlaPhyt. Free amino acid contents (FAA) of plants tended to increase with increasing NH4 concentrations, while the relationships between FAA with growth indices were all weak, suggesting that FAA might be a useful indicator of the physiological stress of the plants but not of macrophyte growth. Taken together, the results from the two seasons indicate that although a combination of high nitrogen concentrations (ammonium) and shading by phytoplankton may cause severe stress on macrophytes, active growth in the growing season enabled them to partly overcome the stress.
Using Freshwater Bivalves (Corbicula Fluminea) to Alleviate Harmful Effects of Small-Sized Crucian Carp (Carassius Carassius) on Growth of Submerged Macrophytes during Lake Restoration by Biomanipulation

Abstract:Increased recruitment of small-sized fish following biomanipulation by reducing the biomass of plankti-benthivorous fish, not least in (sub)tropical lakes, may deteriorate water quality and thereby potentially hamper the recovery of submerged macrophytes. Filter-feeding bivalves remove suspended particles from the water and may, thereby, somewhat or fully counteract this negative effect of the increasing abundance of small-sized fish. So far, only few studies have investigated the interactive effects of fish and bivalves on water clarity and macrophyte growth. We conducted a 2 × 2 factorial designed outdoor mesocosm experiment with two densities of small crucian carp Carassius carassius (low 10 g m−2 and high 40 g m−2) and two densities of bivalves Corbicula fluminea (low 204 g m−2 and high 816 g m−2). We found significant interactive effect of fish and bivalves on the growth of the macrophyte Vallisneria natans. In the low density bivalve regime, the relative growth rates, root mass, root:shoot ratio and number of tubers were 30.3%, 30.8%, 21.6% and 27.8% lower in the high than in the low density fish treatments, while the decrease was less pronounced in the high density bivalve regime: 1.2%, 8.7%, 2.1% and 13.3%, respectively. Thus, bivalves reduced the negative effects of fish, not least when bivalve density was high. The weaker effects of small fish on plants in the high- than in the low-density C. fluminea regime can be attributed to lower total suspended solids (TSS) and Chl a in the first week of the experiment. Better light conditions further stimulated the growth of benthic algae, potentially increasing the removal of nutrients from the water and reducing fish-driven resuspension of the sediment. In addition, high densities of C. fluminea also enriched the sediment total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) content, favouring plant growth as indicated by an increase in leaf tissue TN and TP contents. Our results demonstrate that filter-feeding bivalves can alleviate harmful effects of small fish by prolonging a clear-water state that facilitates submerged macrophyte growth. Addition of the bivalve C. fluminea can be a promising tool for the restoration of submerged macrophytes in shallow eutrophic lakes, in particular lakes containing small, rapidly reproducing fish that due to their small sizes are not capable of controlling the bivalves.

Abstract:The re‐establishment of submerged macrophytes is crucial in shallow lake restoration transforming a turbid into a clear water system, but it might be inhibited by juvenile omni‐benthivorous fish. These fishes disturb the sediment, and even uproot new sprouts, creating turbid water through sediment resuspension and release of nutrients stored in the sediment. Lanthanum modified bentonite (LMB), an in‐situ capping material, can immobilise phosphate and consolidate sediments, potentially weakening the negative effects of juvenile omni‐benthivorous fish. We hypothesised that applying LMB would improve water quality and promote the growth of submerged macrophytes by eliminating or weakening the increase of suspended solids, nutrient concentration, and algal reproduction due to juvenile omni‐benthivorous fish disturbance. To test our hypothesis, a two‐by‐two factorial mesocosm experiment with two densities of juvenile crucian carp (absence and 10 g/m3) and two doses of LMB (absence and 800 g/m2) was conducted. Juvenile crucian carp significantly inhibited the growth and reproduction of the macrophyte Vallisneria natans by reducing the underwater light and direct effects such as uprooting. No significant inhibition or promotion by LMB on the growth of V. natans in the absence of juvenile crucian carp was observed. However, LMB significantly inhibited the fish‐induced sediment resuspension and nutrients increases. Consequently, algal production was reduced and underwater light conditions were improved, which promoted the growth and reproduction of V. natans, e.g., more ramets, biomass, and leaves of V. natans. Our results indicated that submerged macrophytes could benefit from LMB application under high intensity disturbance by juvenile omni‐benthivorous fish, thereby conducive to the maintenance of a clear water state in shallow lakes.

Abstract:The degeneration of submerged macrophytes and the invasion of Eichhornia crassipes (E. crassipes) destroyed the balance of aquatic ecosystems environments. In this study, responses of Vallisneria natans (V. natans) and the leaf-epiphytic biofilms to E. crassipes were analyzed to provide a technical scheme for V. natans restoration and E. crassipes control in eutrophic water. The results showed that a significant improvement of water quality achieved in 1100 ind·m-2 E. crassipes density group and TN removal rate reached 63.53%. The presence of E. crassipes changed the morphological characteristics of V. natans, which stimulated the adaptive mechanisms via promotion of shoot height and root length. Concentrations of the antioxidant enzymes, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in the V. natans leaves remained stable. But E. crassipes greatly increased the microbial diversity on V. natans leave biofilms. Furthermore, the greatest richness in bacterial community diversity was observed at 700, 1100 and 1200 ind·m-2 E. crassipes densities in heatmap, which was beneficial to the stability of the water ecological environment. These results showed that the combination of V. natans with E. crassipes of 1100 ind·m-2 providing more favorable conditions for the growth and restoration of submerged macrophytes and improve the water quality.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of water flow on the growth and physiological indicators of the submerged macrophyte, Vallisneria natans, and the bacteria and algae community composition on its epiphytic biofilm-covered leaves. The authors set up a simulated flowing water laboratory experiment testing high nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations. Total chlorophyll and dissolved oxygen (DO) was significantly enhanced, and turbidity was reduced, thereby accelerating the growth of V. natans. These experiments were compared to another set of observations on a static group. The accumulation of malonaldehyde (MDA) in the dynamic groups was significantly higher than that in the static group. As an antioxidant stress response, the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) was also induced in plants exposed to nutrient-rich flowing water. The results of 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analyses showed that the water flow increased the bacteria community diversity of biofilm-producing bacteria with N and P removing bacteria, carbon cycle bacteria, and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on the epiphytic biofilm. This research determined that water flow alleviates the adverse effects of eutrophication when V. natans grows in water containing high N and P concentrations. Water flow also inhibits the growth of cyanobacteria (also referred to as blue-green algae) in epiphytic biofilm. The ecological factor of water flow, such as water disturbance and aeration measures, could alleviate the adverse effect of eutrophic water by providing a new way to restore submerged macrophytes, such as V. natans, in eutrophic water.
Sedimentary organic matter load influences the ecological effects of submerged macrophyte restoration through rhizosphere metabolites and microbial communities

Abstract:Organic matter (OM) accumulation in lake sediments has doubled owing to human activities over the past 100 years, which has negatively affected the restoration of submerged vegetation and ecological security. Changes in the pollution structure of sediments caused by plant recovery and rhizosphere chemical processes under different sediment OM levels are the theoretical basis for the rational application of plant rehabilitation technology in lake management. This study explored how Vallisneria natans mediates changes in sediment N and P through rhizospheric metabolites and microbial community and function under low (4.94 %) and high (17.35 %) sediment OM levels. V. natans promoted the accumulation of NH4-N in the high-OM sediment and the transformation of Fe/Al-P to Ca-P in the low-OM sediment. By analyzing 63 rhizospheric metabolites and the sediment microbial metagenome, the metabolites lactic acid and 3-hydroxybutyric acid and the genus Anammoximicrobium were found to mediate NH4-N accumulation in the high-OM sediment. Additionally, 3-hydroxy-decanoic acid, adipic acid, and the genus Bdellovibrionaceae mediated the transformation of Fe/Al-P to Ca-P in the low-OM sediment. The growth of V. natans enriched the abundance of functional genes mediating each step from nitrate to ammonia and the genes encoding urease in the high-OM sediment, and it up-regulated three genes related to microbial phosphorus uptake in the low-OM sediment. This study revealed the necessity of controlling endogenous pollution by recovering submerged macrophytes under high- and low-OM conditions from the perspective of the transformation of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus.

Abstract:Submerged plants are an important part of aquatic ecosystems, and the restoration of submerged plants is a key step in the reconstruction of aquatic ecosystems. However, little is known about the role of modified sediments in helping submerged plants recover under low light. In this study, we set up four sediment types and two light intensities to explore the effects of modified sediments on the growth of Vallisneria natans under two low light conditions. The results showed that the independent and interactive effects of light intensity and sediment type significantly affected the biomass, morphology, photosynthetic pigment content and antioxidant enzyme activity of V. natans. At 5% and 20% natural light intensity, the sediment modified with 40% peat soil had a larger root biomass and the highest leaf and root C/N ratio, the sediment modified with 40% vermiculite had a longer root length and more ramets. At 5% natural light intensity, the sediments modified with fly ash had shorter root length and smaller leaf biomass. The sediments modified with fly ash had the greatest chlorophyll content at 20% natural light intensity. It can be concluded that the addition of 40% peat soil or 40% vermiculite in sediment is conducive to the growth of V. natans under low light conditions. Our study indicates the positive effects of the modified sediment on the growth of V. natans under low light conditions, and our study will provide a reference for the restoration of submerged plants in aquatic ecosystems.
High-light Inhibition of Two Submerged Macrophytes in a Shallow Water Experiment.

Abstract:The negative effects, caused by high light, on algae, terrestrial and marine aquatic plants are well documented; those negative effects on freshwater submerged plants are, however, not well known. We determined the negative effects of two common submerged species, Myriophyllum spicatum and Vallisneria natans, on their growth and reproduction in a shallow water experiment along an irradiance gradient. Our results highlighted that the plant mass, relative growth rate and shoot height of V. natans and M. spicatum, and root mass and root length:root mass of M. spicatum and leaf mass and shoot height:shoot mass of V. natans were significantly negatively affected in shallow water with high-light regime (>50 % of full light). While the ramet number of the two species was stimulated by from 20.0 to 36.4 %, and root length, root:shoot, chlorophyll (a:b), chlorophyll (a + b), leaf carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the two studied macrophytes were not significantly impacted by light. Our results indicated that the high-light inhibition of plant growth was greater on the shoots than on the roots of the plants, although these effects were significantly different between the two studied submerged species and among the measured traits. Accordingly, we should avoid negative effects caused by high light to improve the performance of submerged species when we conduct submerged aquatic vegetation restoration programmes in eutrophic lakes. Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) restoration is an important and applicable technology to retard the eutrophication process of lakes. Accordingly, planting submerged plants in habitats with shallow water is recommended as submerged species are often limited by low light in these eutrophic water bodies. We found that submerged plants could be inhibited by high light if the water was too shallow. Thus, we should trade-off the water level to avoid high-light inhibition effects on submerged species when we conduct SAV restoration programmes in eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Bioturbation by omni-benthivorous fish often causes sediment resuspension and internal nutrient loading, which boosts phytoplankton growth and may lead to a shift of clear water lakes to a turbid state. Removal of large-sized omni-benthivorous individuals is a lake restoration measure that may revert lakes from a turbid to a clear water state, yet the rapid reproduction of small omni-benthivorous fish in tropical and subtropical shallow lakes may impede such lake recovery. In lake restoration, also a combination of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) and planting submerged macrophytes has been used that may synergistically improve lake water quality. How the combined effect works in the presence of small omni-benthivorous fish has not been studied, which is needed given the high abundances of small omni-benthivorous fish in (sub)tropical lakes. We conducted a two-by-two factorial mesocosm experiment with and without the submerged macrophytes Vallisneria natans and with and without LMB, all in the presence of small crucian carp. At the end of the experiment, turbidity in the V. natans, LMB and combined LMB + V. natans treatments had decreased by 0.8%, 30.3% and 30.9%, respectively, compared with the controls. In addition, the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) release from the sediment in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments had decreased substantially, by 97.4% and 94.3%, respectively, compared with the control. These N and P fluxes were also significantly lower in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments than in the sole LMB treatment (88.1% and 82.3%) or the V. natans treatment (93.2% and 90.3%). Cyanobacteria in the overlying water in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments significantly decreased by 84.1%, 63.5% and 37.0%, respectively, compared with the control and the sole LMB and V. natans treatments. Our results show that LMB and submerged macrophytes complement each other in effectively improving the water quality, even in the presence of small omni-benthivorous fish.

Abstract:Introduction: Water depth (WD) and snail abundance (SA) are two key factors affecting the growth of submersed aquatic plants in freshwater lake ecosystems. Changes in WD and SA drive changes in nutrients and other primary producers that may have direct or indirect effects on submersed plant growth, but which factor dominates the impact of both on aquatic plants has not been fully studied. Methods: To investigate the dominant factors that influence aquatic plant growth in plateau lakes, a one-year field study was conducted to study the growth of three dominant submersed macrophyte (i.e., Vallisneria natans , Potamogeton maackianus , and Potamogeton lucens ) in Erhai Lake. Results: The results show that, the biomass of the three dominant plants, P.maackianus , is the highest, followed by P.lucens , and V.natans is the lowest. Meanwhile, periphyton and snails attached to P.maackianus are also the highest. Furthermore, WD had a positive effect on the biomass of two submersed macrophyte species of canopy-type P.maackianus and P.lucens , while it had a negative effect on rosette-type V.natans. Snail directly inhibited periphyton attached on V.natans and thereby increasing the biomass of aquatic plants, but the effect of snails on the biomass of the other two aquatic plants is not through inhibition of periphyton attached to their plants. Discussion: The dominant factors affecting the biomass of submersed macrophyte in Erhai Lake were determined, as well as the direct and indirect mechanisms of WD and snails on the biomass of dominant submersed macrophyte. Understanding the mechanisms that dominate aquatic plant change will have implications for lake management and restoration.
