Abstract:Antibiotics are widely used in medicine, but they are not fully metabolized in the body and can end up in wastewater. Conventional wastewater treatment methods fail to completely remove antibiotic residues, which can then enter rivers and streams. Adsorption is a promising technique for removing antibiotics from wastewater, even at low concentrations. The successful one-pot synthesis of an adsorbent, iron-containing porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (Fe-POP), was achieved through the reaction of pyrrole groups and terephthalaldehyde in the presence of FeCl3. Characterized by a substantial BET surface area of 597 m2 g-1, Fe-POP was systematically investigated for its adsorption potential in the removal of the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (CIP) from aqueous solutions. By systematic variation of key parameters, including pH, adsorbent loading, and CIP concentration, the adsorption conditions were optimized. Under the optimal conditions at pH = 3, CIP concentration of 5 ppm, and 25 mg of Fe-POP, the maximum adsorption capacity reached an impressive 263 mg g-1. The robust adsorption behavior was elucidated through the fitting of experimental data to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R2 = 0.962) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) with lower error values. These models suggested that the adsorption process predominantly involved chemical interactions between CIP molecules and the Fe-POP surface. Fe-POP exhibited a robust structure with a high adsorption capacity, showcasing its efficacy in removing CIP contaminants from water. Therefore, Fe-POP can be considered a valuable adsorbent for water treatment applications, specifically for antibiotic removal.

Abstract:With the increasing requirements for sustainable development and environmental protection, the design and development of bio-adsorbent based on the widely sourced cellulose have attracted widespread attention. In this study, a polymeric imidazolium satls (PIMS) functionalized cellulose foam (CF@PIMS) was conveniently fabricated. It was then employed to efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CIP). Three imidazolium salts containing phenyl groups that can lead to multiple interactions with CIP were elaborately designed and then screened through a combination of molecular simulation and removal experiments to acquire the most significant binding ability of CF@PIMS. Besides, the CF@PIMS retained the well-defined 3D network structure as well as high porosity (90.3 %) and total intrusion volume (6.05 mL g-1) as the original cellulose foam (CF). Therefore, the adsorption capacity of CF@PIMS reached an astonishing value of 736.9 mg g-1, nearly 10 times that of the CF. Furthermore, the pH-affected and ionic strength-affected adsorption experiments confirmed that the non-electrostatic interaction took on a critical significance in the adsorption. The reusability experiments showed that the recovery efficiency of CF@PIMS was higher than 75 % after 10 adsorption cycles. Thus, a high-potential method was proposed in terms of the design and preparation of functionalized bio-adsorbent to remove waste matters from samples of the environment.

Abstract:In the fascinating realm of water purification, our study unveils the remarkable potential of a cutting-edge nano-scale adsorbent—combining graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS), and polydopamine (PDA)—in efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CPF) and ofloxacin (OFL) from aqueous solutions. Our exploration delves deep into the adsorbent's character, utilizing a range of analytical techniques including SEM, RAMAN, FTIR, TGA, BET, XRD, and Zeta potential analyses provided insights into the adsorbent's properties. Modeling the adsorption process with Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) indicated excellent predictions by GRNN, with RMSE = 0.0200 and 0.0166, MAE = 0.0082 and 0.0092, as well as AAD = 0.0002 and 0.0006, highlighting its modeling power. Optimization using genetic algorithm (GA) revealed maximum CPF removal efficiency of approximately 95.20% under pH = 6.3, sonication time = 9.0 min, adsorbent dosage = 2.10 g L− 1 , temperature = 45 °C and initial CPF concentration = 90.0 mg L− 1 . Similarly, OFL removal reached about 95.50% under pH = 6.30, sonication time = 8.0 min, adsorbent dosage = 2.0 g L− 1 , temperature = 45 °C and OFL concentration = 115.0 mg L− 1 . RSM optimization closely aligned with GA results. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model best fitted the experimental data for both antibiotics. Thermodynamic analysis indicated a favorable and spontaneous adsorption process for CPF and OFL. The study concludes that the proposed adsorbents show effectiveness in removing CPF and OFL at lower doses and shorter sonication times compared to various reported adsorbents.

Abstract:Because of the widespread presence of antibiotics in water, soil, and other environments, they pose great potential risks to the environment, threatening human and animal health. In this study, graphene oxide–kaolinite homogeneous dispersion was prepared by simple liquid phase exfoliation. The three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene oxide–kaolinite–poly(vinyl alcohol) composites were prepared by the cross-linking of poly(vinyl alcohol) and the formation of ice crystals during the freezing-drying process. Three influencing factors [adsorbent dosage, ciprofloxacin (CIP) initial concentration, and time] of CIP adsorption and removal were systematically analyzed by the response surface method. The order of significance for response values (CIP removal rate) was adsorbent dosage > CIP initial concentration > time. The 3D porous material showed good adsorption capacity of CIP, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 408.16 mg/g, and it had good recyclability. By Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, it was found the composite adsorbs CIP by hydrogen bonding and π–π interaction. Abstract:Antibiotics in water bodies are emerging as an alarming new pollutant because of its persistent and recombinant nature. In recent period of human lifestyle, pharmaceutical products play a vital role in many perspectives. Due to this unpredictable usage of products, the unreacted components release into waterbodies in trace quantities. Eventhough these trace quantities initiate a crisis of developing resistant antibacterial strains which pose health risks to humans and animals. This work reports the batch adsorption of a fluoroquinolone, a fourth-generation antibiotic compound by a biosorbent made by acid-treated tamarind shells. The shells were treated with zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid. The characterization of biosorbent was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The optimized adsorption parameters of time, pH and temperature were 30 minutes, 6 and 60 °C. The adsorbent can be reused up to seven times with negligible loss in its adsorption capacity. Adsorption followed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin model where used to determine the correlation coefficient. Pseudo first-order, second-order and intra-particle kinetic model were used to fit the experimental data. The results are best described by pseudo second-order denoting chemisorption and Freundlich isotherm model describing multilayer adsorption.The proposed work is to investigate about improved tamarind shell as biomass used in the removal unreacted PPCP components that have been released into aquatic environment.The novelty of this paper lies in that it puts forward a better resource utilization method for treating PPCP component wastewater, and studies the method theoretically from the perspective of mechanism and proves its feasibility.Identifying the maximum adsorption of antibiotic component from wastewater under different conditions and finding the optimum range.In addition to the existing literatures, this study has compared the adsorption efficiency of raw and treated adsorbent material prepared using Tamarind shell.

Abstract:Aquatic life is largely affected by the toxic nature of pharmaceutical waste that is released into the environment and affects nature at every level. To preserve nature, it is very important to remove pharmaceutical waste, such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and other antibiotics from nature. In this study, chitosan-graphene-based eco-friendly nano-adsorbent (CS-GO-NPs) was synthesized for the removal of CIP from an aqueous medium using ultrasonic-assisted adsorption. A detailed analysis of process conditions including pH, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperature was performed. Results were found to be significant and more than 94% removal efficiency was achieved using an optimum concentration of 200 mg/L, 5 pH, and adsorption time of 20 min. Further, batch adsorption data was used to study the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior and an isotherm study was performed to determine the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction. Experimental results showed a significant agreement with the theoretical values and more than 0.99 regression coefficient ( R 2 ) values were obtained for pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherm. Further, an adsorption mechanism was also proposed for the CIP-(CS-GO-NPs) system, and found that film diffusion dominates the process, while pore diffusion also plays a vital role in devising an effective eco-friendly adsorbent. The proposed study provides an effective and sustainable route for the management of toxic pharmaceutical wastes using chitosan-graphene-based nano-adsorbent under mild process conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Antibiotic pollutants discharged from pharmaceutical industries are often present in the aquaticenvironment due to ineffective treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater and are hazardous tohuman and aquatic life. Therefore, effective treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater is ofutmost importance in the field of environmental protection. This study aims to evaluate theadsorption performance of an amine-functionalized MCM–41 mesoporous silica nanoparticlessystem (MCM–41–NH2) as an adsorbent for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic fromaqueous solution. Surface and structural characteristics of MCM–41–NH2 were examined usingscanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy, and point of zero charge analysis. In addition, thermal stabilitywas investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Via the proposed treatment, 99.25% CIPremoval was achieved under the following conditions: pH = 7; MCM–41–NH2 dose = 0.8 g/L;CIP concentration = 10 mg/L; adsorption time = 120 min; and shaking speed = 200 rpm.Isotherm study showed that the experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir equation.Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity of MCM–41–NH2 for CIP was 164.3 mg/g.Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process of CIP on MCM–41–NH2 wasendothermic and spontaneous. Additionally, the increase in solution temperature had a positiveimpact on the removal of CIP. The kinetic data obtained at different CIP concentrations (10, 25,50, and 100 mg/L) were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. MCM–41–NH2 couldbe recycled eight times in the proposed adsorption process, with a slight loss in its adsorptioncapacity. Compared with other adsorbents, MCM–41–NH2 was more effective for CIP removal.

Abstract:Ciprofloxacin (CIP), an important representative fluoroquinolone antibiotic, has been frequently detected in water sources, thus threatening aquatic organisms and human health. In this work, a porous three‐component covalent organic polymer (SLEL‐6) was synthesized through multi‐component (MC) reaction systems for adsorptive removal of CIP from aqueous solution, followed by an encapsulation process to achieve SLEL‐6/sodium alginate (SA) beads with boosted adsorption ability, reusability and recyclability. By virtue of the hierarchical porous natures, functional groups as well as π‐rich skeletons, SLEL‐6 and SLEL‐6/SA beads could deal with CIP contamination effectively. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms of CIP by SLEL‐6 and SLEL‐6/SA beads follow the Langmuir model showing high theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of 57.47 and 163.93 mg g−1, respectively. Furthermore, the plausible mechanisms are proposed according to experimental studies of influencing factors, coupled with characterizations before and after adsorption. This work therefore highlighting the immense potential of COP‐based SA composite beads as new‐type globular adsorbents for eliminating fluoroquinolones from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF‐based composites have emerged as efficient materials for removing ciprofloxacin from wastewater due to their high surface area, tunable porosity, and active sites for adsorption. These structures enable strong interactions with ciprofloxacin molecules, enhancing removal efficiency. Furthermore, the production of MOF‐based composites with further modifications improves their performance for water treatment. In spite of greater efforts to address antibiotic resistance, Ciprofloxacin (CIP) buildup in the aqueous medium continues to rise. The negative effects of CIP on the environment can be minimized through a comprehensive understanding of the technological advancements in removal techniques. The exploration of adsorbents like metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), activated carbon, porous organic polymers, etc., have found major usage in the adsorptive removal of antibiotics to tackle contamination. This study aims to compare the MOF‐based adsorbents and provide a guide to developing such materials for the successful removal of CIP. The isotherm models of the adsorbents are studied using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Sips isotherms. Furthermore, pseudo‐second‐order, pseudo‐first order, intra‐particle diffusion, and Elovich models are used to study the kinetic models. The major mechanisms of adsorption, such as π–π interactions, H‐bonding, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and pore filling, are also analyzed. This study contributes to the future scope for the development of these MOFs for further exploration and applications in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Antibiotics are widely prioritized pharmaceuticals frequently adopted in medication for addressing numerous ailments of humans and animals. However, the non-judicious disposal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) with concentration levels exceeding threshold limit in an aqueous environment has been the matter of growing concern nowadays. CIP is found in various waterways with appreciable mobility due to its limited decay in solidified form. Hence, the effective eradication strategy of this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory antibiotic from aqueous media is pivotal for preventing the users and the biosphere from their hazardous impacts. Reportedly several customary techniques like reverse osmosis, precipitation, cross-filtration, nano-filtration, ion exchange, microbial remediation, and adsorption have been employed to eliminate CIP from water. Out of them, adsorption is ascertained to be a potential method because of lesser preliminary investment costs, ease of operation, greater efficiency, less energy usage, reduced chemical and biological slurry production, and ready availability of precursor materials. Towards remediation of ciprofloxacin-laden water, plenty of researchers have used different adsorbents. However, the present-day challenge is opting the promising sorbent and its application towards industrial scale-up which is vital to get reviewed. In this article, adsorbents of diverse origins are reviewed in terms of their performances in CIP removal. The review stresses the impact of various factors on sorptive assimilation of CIP, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, mechanism of ionic interaction, contrivances for CIP detection, cost estimation and reusability assessments of adsorbents also that may endorse the next-generation investigators to decide the efficacious, environmental appealing and cost-competitive adsorbents for effective riddance of CIP from wastewater.
Adsorption of Ciprofloxacin on Graphene Oxide-Based Adsorbents: Synthesis, Characterization and DFT Calculations

Abstract:In this article, the synthesis of graphene oxide from coal or coke and a composite graphene oxide-geopolymer were carried out to produce adsorbents applied to Ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from water in a laboratory scale. The characterization analyzes of the adsorbent were performed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Zeta Potential (ZP), Particle Size Distribution (PSD), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy (FEG/EDS), and RAMAN spectroscopy. Multilayer graphene oxide was identified after coal or coke thermal treatment and ultrasound exfoliation followed by ozone oxidation of the solid surface. A composite produced using phosphate mining residues and graphene oxide incorporation (22 wt%) showed the highest adsorption capacity. Affinity tests showed removal rates for CIP ranging from 15% to 55%. Kinetic studies indicated that the equilibrium time varied between 100 min and 120 min for three different initial CIP concentrations. With regard to the kinetic study, the pseudo-first order model better described the kinetics at the concentration of 0.05 mmol L -1 , while the pseudo-second order model better described the kinetics at concentrations of 0.1 mmol L -1 and 0.2 mmol L -1 . The studies on adsorption equilibrium showed that the Langmuir model provided the most accurate fit to the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacity was found at 45 °C and it was of 0.24 mmol g -1 . The possible mechanisms of adsorption are related to electrostatic interactions and covalent bonds.

Ciprofloxacin Removal via Acid-Modified Red Mud: Optimizing the Process, Analyzing the Adsorption Features, and Exploring the Underlying Mechanism

Abstract:In this study, RM (red mud) was acidified with sulfuric acid, and the acidified ARM (acidified red mud) was utilized as an innovative adsorption material for treating antibiotic-containing wastewater. The adsorption conditions, kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanism of ARM for CIP (ciprofloxacin) were investigated. The characterization of the ARM involved techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and NH3-TPD analysis. Adsorption studies employed a response surface methodology (RSM) for the experimental design. The results showed that ARM can absorb CIP effectively. The RSM optimal experiment indicated that the most significant model terms influencing adsorption capacity were solution pH, CIP initial concentration, and ARM dosage, under which the predicted maximum adsorption capacity achieved 7.30 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second-order model, while equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm, yielding maximum capacity values of 7.35 mg/g. The adsorption process occurred spontaneously and absorbed heat, evidenced by ΔGθ values between −83.05 and −91.50 kJ/mol, ΔSθ at 281.6 J/mol/K, and ΔHθ at 0.86 kJ/mol. Analysis using attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) indicated a complex reaction between the Al–O in the ARM and the ester group –COO in CIP. The C=O bond in CIP was likely to undergo a slight electrostatic interaction or be bound to the internal spherical surface of the ARM. The findings indicate that ARM is a promising and efficient adsorbent for CIP removal from wastewater.

Abstract:Lignin and its derivatives composites have received increasing interests in the field of water treatment for the features of eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness and sustainable regeneration. Herein, a lignin-based aggregate microparticles adsorbent (SLS/PEI/GO-P) was synthesized through a green method for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water. The composition and structure of SLS/PEI/GO-P were characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, TG, XRD, XPS and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, concentration, time, temperature, inorganic salts and HA on CIP adsorption were investigated through batch experiments. The results indicated that the maximum CIP adsorption capacity was 823.3 mg/g with the CIP concentration of 250 mg/L at pH 8 and 30 °C, which was much higher than that of most reported. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model. The adsorption thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous at low temperatures and exothermic. FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that the adsorption mechanism was mainly involved with electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding interactions and π-π interactions. After 5 adsorption and hydrothermal regeneration cycles, the adsorption capacity for CIP by the adsorbent decreased only slightly. The adsorbent has the advantages of green preparation process and regeneration method, good adsorption capacity, and high sustainability, which renders it potentially viable in treating real wastewater containing CIP.

Selective and efficient removal of ciprofloxacin from water by bimetallic MOF beads: Mechanism quantitative analysis and dynamic adsorption

Abstract:MOFs play an important role in the adsorption of antibiotics, but the drawbacks of MOF powders limit their practical applications. Moreover, the dominant adsorption mechanism and the quantitative assessment of MOF powders are less studied. Herein, bimetallic ZIF particles were embedded in chitosan beads via an in-situ growth process (ZnCo-ZIF@CS beads), which could selectively remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) from a complex environment. The maximum adsorption capacity was 348.90 mg/g, superior to that of other advanced adsorbents. ZnCo-ZIF@CS performed efficiently in various actual water samples and showed excellent anti-interference and recycling abilities (only a decrease of 12.74 % after 9 cycles). CIP adsorption could still reach 85.30 % after continuous flow treatment for 600 min. Interestingly, ZnCo-ZIF@CS had a good protective effect on rice seedling growth and alleviated CIP stress in rice seedlings due to the low metal leaching at pH 4.0–11.0. Macroscopic experiments, XPS, 2D-FTIR-COS and DFT results revealed that hydrogen bonding (HB), complexation (CB), electrostatic attraction (EA) and π-π interactions were involved in CIP adsorption. Different interactions dominated CIP adsorption in different pH regions. At pH < 5.0, EA and CB were the main driving forces, accounting for 42–52 % and 27–57 % of the total adsorption; at 5.0 < pH < 9.0, the contribution of EA decreased to < 15 % while CB was still dominant, accounting for ∼ 50 % of the total adsorption, and other effects (HB and π-π) increased to approximately 29–39 %; at pH > 9.0, EA, CB, HB together with π-π caused 1–27 %, 9–31 % and 66–72 % of the total adsorption, respectively. The reaction sequence of functional groups in different CIP solutions and at various pH values was also probed by 2D-FTIR-COS. This study further provides clear evidence for developing robust MOF-based adsorbents and for the mechanism quantitative analysis of pollutant adsorption by MOFs.

Porous Carbon Aerogel Derived from Bacterial Cellulose with Prominent Potential for Efficient Removal of Antibiotics from the Aquatic Matrix

Abstract:The development of adsorption methods for the remediation of antibiotics pollution in water is hindered by the lack of high-performance sorbents. In this study, a nanofiber carbon aerogel was prepared using bacterial cellulose and its adsorption performances for three common antibiotics (norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol) in water were evaluated. The as-prepared nanofiber carbon aerogel showed a higher adsorption capacity toward target antibiotics compared to other adsorbents reported in the literature. The maximum adsorption capacities for norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol were 1,926, 1,264, and 525 mg/g, respectively at 298 K. Notably, the nanofiber carbon aerogel was able to adsorb 80% of the equilibrium adsorption capacity within 1 min and reach equilibrium within 15 min. After five regeneration cycles, the adsorption capacity still reached 1,166, 847, and 428 mg/g for norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol, respectively. The characterization results showed that the carbon aerogel exhibited a high specific surface area (1,505 m2/g) and a layered porous network structure. Furthermore, the mechanistic study reveals that the enhanced antibiotic adsorption by the as-prepared nanofiber carbon aerogel was attributed to the pore filling effect, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effect, electrostatic interaction, and π-π interactions. Overall, these results imply that low-cost and green nanofiber carbon aerogels may be promising adsorbents for the remediation of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater. The materials prepared from natural and readily available bacterial cellulose can adsorb antibiotics efficiently, which provides a reference for the development of adsorbent materials using natural substances.
Construction of an allophane-based molecularly imprinted polymer for the efficient removal of antibiotic from aqueous solution

Abstract:The widespread presence of ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic in the water and soil poses substantial potential risks to the environment, threatening both human and animal health. In this study, we used nanoclay mineral allophane (Allo), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a bifunctional monomer, and sodium alginate as a cross-linking agent, to prepare 3D porous Allo-β-CD molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for the efficient removal of CIP from aqueous solution. The prepared Allo-β-CD MIP was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The effects of initial concentration, time, pH level, and ion concentration on CIP removal dynamics were systematically studied. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data of CIP were well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. The Allo-β-CD MIP can efficiently remove CIP from an aqueous solution, with a maximal adsorption capacity of 635 mg/g. It also has impressive recyclability, and enhanced selectivity, and is widely adaptable to various environmental conditions. The adsorption mechanisms of the as-prepared adsorbent include H bonds, hydrophobic interactions, surface complexation, and n-π EDA interactions. Given the experimental evidence, as-prepared adsorbent is therefore a promising candidate for the effective removal of CIP from the aquatic environment.

Abstract:In this study, a porous carbonaceous adsorbent was prepared from sycamore flocs by pyrolysis method and K2CO3 activation. The effects of preparative conditions of the material on its adsorptive property were explored. The optimal material (SFB2-900) was obtained with a K2CO3/biochar mass ratio of 2:1 at an activation temperature of 900 °C, possessing a huge surface specific area (1651.27 m2/g). The largest adsorption capacity for ciprofloxacin on SFB2-900 was up to 430.25 mg/g. The adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. Meanwhile, this process was spontaneous and exothermic. The obtained material showed excellent adsorption performance in the conditions of diverse pH range, ionic strength, and water quality of the solution. The optimum adsorption conditions (pH = 7.01, dosage = 0.6 g/L, and C0 = 52.94 mg/L) determined based on the response surface methodology were in accordance with the practical validation consequences. The good regeneration effect of SFB2-900 manifested that this material had great practical application potential. Combining the experimental results and density functional theory calculation results, the adsorption mechanisms mainly included pore filling, π-π EDA interactions, electrostatic interactions, and H-bonds. The material could be regarded as a novel and high-efficiency adsorbent for antibiotics. Additionally, these findings also provide reference for the reuse of waste biomass in water treatment.

Abstract:Advances in the elucidation of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) function have resulted in a greater understanding of the relationship between the CF gene defect and clinical disease. The clinical phenotype is influenced by the class of mutation and possibly by other modifier genes. CFTR regulates the volume and composition of airways surface liquid, primarily by controlling chloride ion transport. However, CFTR also regulates other membrane channels and transports other molecules which may be important in mucocilary clearance and innate defence mechanisms. CFTR may also modulate the inflammatory response in respiratory epithelial cells and other inflammatory cells through a range of mechanisms. It is apparent that CFTR dysfunction results in a range of effects which may contribute to the clinical phenotype. These may contribute to the development of clinical disease at different stages of the natural history of cystic fibrosis. A greater understanding of the basic defect and its implications is likely to result in novel therapeutic approaches.
Adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of ciprofloxacin on polyanion-modified laterite material

Abstract:In this work, polyanion polystyrene sulfonate modified laterite (PML) was used as an excellent material to remove ciprofloxacin (CFX) in water. The CFX adsorption on PML was affected by factors such as pH, PML dosage, contact time, ionic strength, and operating temperature. Under optimum conditions (pH 5; 150 min; 5 mg/mL, 10 mM NaCl, 25 °C) with an initial CFX concentration of 20 ppm, the maximum removal of CFX using PML reached greater than 96%. Langmuir isotherm model provided the best fit to the experimental results of the CFX adsorption process onto PML with the maximum capacity was 10.51 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics were in good agreement with pseudo-second-order. The ∆ H 0 value was − 12.090 kJ.mol −1 , and the ∆ G 0 value was − 2.345 kJ.mol −1 , declaring that the CFX adsorption onto PML was a spontaneous process and exothermal. Adsorption mechanisms of CFX on PML were controlled by both electrostatic interaction and non-electrostatic interaction. The adsorption constant in the Temkin model was 1.700 J/mol, and the energy value in Dubinin–Radushkevich model was 2.371 kJ/mol, proving that CFX adsorption on PML is a physical adsorption process. After five recycles, the CFX removal was still higher than 77%, while the CFX removal from wastewater was approximately 96%.
