Abstract:Clinical application of the amniotic membrane (AM) in vascular reconstruction was limited by poor processability, rapid biodegradation, and insufficient hemocompatibility. In this work, decellularized AM was digested to a thermosensitive hydrogel and densely cross-linked in the nanoscale as "enhanced" collagenous fibers. Via N-(3-dimehylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) catalysis, REDV was further grafted to simulate anticoagulant substances on naturally derived blood vessels. This modification approach endowed AM with rapid endothelialization and rare vascular restenosis. Through adjusting the fixation condition, the pore size and mechanical stability of the fiber network were approximate to those of natural tissues and precisely designed to fit for cell adhesion. AM was synchronously fixed by alginate dialdehyde (ADA) and EDC/NHS, forming a "double-cross-linked" stable structure with significantly improved mechanical strength and resistance against enzymic degradation. The hemolytic and platelet adhesion test indicated that ADA/REDV-AM could inhibit hemolysis and coagulation. It also exhibited excellent cytocompatibility. It selectively accelerated adsorption and migration of endothelial cells (ECs) while impeding adhesion and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs). It maintained EC superiority in competitive growth and avoided thrombosis in vivo. Furthermore, its property of promoting reconstruction and repair of blood vessels was proved in an animal experiment. Overall, the present study demonstrates that ADA/REDV-AM has potential application as a small-diameter artificial vascular intima with rapid endothelialization and reduced SMC/platelet adhesion.

Abstract:Apoptosis programmed cell death (PCD) type I is physiological process responsible for cell loss during mammary gland involution after natural weaning or litter removal in rodents, after weaning in sow and during drying off in goat and cow. The regulation of mammary epithelial cell (MEC) apoptosis in bovine mammary gland occurs at three levels. The first level comprises intracellular regulatory proteins, e.g. Bcl-2 family death promoters and inhibitors. The second level is represented by intramammary inductors of apoptosis, e.g. FIL, IGFBPs, Fas ligand, TGF-βs. The expression and activity of these auto/paracrine inductors of apoptosis is controlled and modulated by the third level factors, e.g. systemic galactopoetic hormones, nutrition, reproductive status and milking management. Our recent study proved that apoptosis in involuting bovine mammary gland is accompanied by increased intensity of autophagy, regarded as a cytoprotective process but in advanced stage as a PCD type II. Moreover, we have reported for the first time the ability of TGF-β1 to induce both apoptosis and autophagy in bovine BME-UV1 MEC. Much more pronounced heterogenity of PCD was observed when breast cancer cells were exposed to anticancer drugs. The primary responses of breast cancer MCF-7 cells to camptothecin (CPT) are apoptosis and autophagy (as a cytoprotective process). In this case autophagy occurs in cells which are resistant to apoptosis as a tool of cancer cell survival. The fail-safe responses of breast cancer cells to persisting CPT-induced stress are apoptosis accompanied by morphological and biochemical features of autophagy or type II PCD with advanced subcellular degradation. The threshold between autophagy as a cytoprotective process (reversible) or PCD (irreversible) is difficult to establish and probably depends on the extent of degradation of cellular components. Proapoptotic protein Bid may serve as a molecular switch between apoptosis and autophagy. Bid knock down in MCF-7 cells exposed to CPT leads to a shift of cell death from apoptosis to autophagy. Since bid and other proapoptotic genes undergo mutations in malignant cells, the ability of cancer cells commitment to autophagy may have important therapeutic implications.
Preparation and characterization of small-diameter decellularized scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering in an animal model

Abstract:Background: The development of a suitable extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold is the first step in vascular tissue engineering (VTE). Synthetic vascular grafts are available as an alternative to autologous vessels in large-diameter arteries (>8 mm) and medium-diameter arteries (6-8 mm). In small-diameter vessels (<6 mm), synthetic vascular grafts are of limited use due to poor patency rates. Compared with a vascular prosthesis, natural tissue ECM has valuable advantages. Despite considerable progress in recent years, identifying an optimal protocol to create a scaffold for use in small-diameter (<6 mm) fully natural tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVG), remains elusive. Although reports on different decellularization techniques have been numerous, combination of and comparison between these methods are scarce; therefore, we have compared five different decellularization protocols for making small-diameter (<6 mm) ECM scaffolds and evaluated their characteristics relative to those of fresh vascular controls. Results: The protocols differed in the choice of enzymatic digestion solvent, the use of non-ionic detergent, the durations of the individual steps, and UV crosslinking. Due to their small diameter and ready availability, rabbit arteria carotis were used as the source of the ECM scaffolds. The scaffolds were subcutaneously implanted in rats and the results were evaluated using various microscopy and immunostaining techniques. Conclusions: Our findings showed that a 2 h digestion time with 1× EDTA, replacing non-ionic detergent with double-distilled water for rinsing and the application of UV crosslinking gave rise to an ECM scaffold with the highest biocompatibility, lowest cytotoxicity and best mechanical properties for use in vivo or in situ pre-clinical research in VTE in comparison.

Abstract:Lymphedema is characterized by progressive and chronic tissue swelling and inflammation from local accumulation of interstitial fluid due to lymphatic injury or dysfunction. It is a debilitating condition that significantly impacts a patient’s quality of life, and has limited treatment options. With better understanding of the molecular mechanisms and pathophysiology of lymphedema and advances in tissue engineering technologies, lymphatic tissue bioengineering and regeneration have emerged as a potential therapeutic option for postsurgical lymphedema. Various strategies involving stem cells, lymphangiogenic factors, bioengineered matrices and mechanical stimuli allow more precisely controlled regeneration of lymphatic tissue at the site of lymphedema without subjecting patients to complications or iatrogenic injuries associated with surgeries. This review provides an overview of current innovative approaches of lymphatic tissue bioengineering that represent a promising treatment option for postsurgical lymphedema.

Abstract:<p>The replacement of small-diameter arteries remains an unmet clinical need. Here we investigated the cellular remodeling of fibrotic conduits as vascular grafts. The formation of fibrotic conduit around subcutaneously implanted mandrels involved not only fibroblasts but also the trans-differentiation of inflammatory cells such as macrophages into fibroblastic cells, as shown by genetic lineage tracing. When fibrotic conduits were implanted as vascular grafts, the patency was low, and many fibrotic cells were found in neointima. Decellularization and anti-thrombogenic coating of fibrotic conduits produced highly patent autografts that remodeled into neoarteries, offering an effective approach to obtain autografts for clinical therapy. While autografts recruited mostly anti-inflammatory macrophages for constructive remodeling, allogenic DFCs had more T cells and pro-inflammatory macrophages and much lower patency. Endothelial progenitors and endothelial migration were observed during endothelialization. Cell infiltration into DFCs was more efficient than decellularized arteries, and infiltrated cells remodeled the matrix and differentiated into smooth muscle cells (SMCs). This work provides insight into the remodeling of fibrotic conduits, autologous DFCs and allogenic DFCs, and will have broad impact on using fibrotic matrix for regenerative engineering.</p>

Abstract:The vascular transplantation is an established therapy for vascular diseases by replacing or bypassing the damaged blood vessel with a functional vascular graft. Autologous blood vessels are considered as the gold standard grafts for vascular transplantation, but the limited tissue source and the high morbidity associated with tissue harvesting have restricted their therapeutic potential. Vascular tissue engineering represents an alternative solution to replace the autologous blood vessels by developing an artificial conduit which can closely mimic the nature blood vessel. However, clinical trials with small vascular grafts are disappointing. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of constructing a small vascular graft from the decellularized amniotic membrane (DAM graft) via different crosslinking methods. The human amnion membrane was decellularized, trimmed into 5 cm x 8 cm rectangular shape, and rolled around a catheter (diameter =1.2 mm) to make the primary DAM graft. Each of the resulting conduits was additionally crosslinked with: a) 0.1% glutaraldehyde; b) 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (20mM) / N-hydroxy succinimide (10mM) (EDC-NHS); c) 0.5% genipin; and d) no-crosslinking as control group. Our results demonstrated the structural integrity, material stability, mechanical behaviors, and biocompatibilities of the DAM grafts can be modified by the chemical crosslinking treatment. In which, the genipin crosslinked DAM graft exhibited the most integrated layered structure. Its level of material stability was comparable to those of the glutaraldehyde and the EDC-NHS crosslinked DAM grafts. Furthermore, the genipin crosslinking did not significantly affect the mechanical properties of the DAM graft. The genipin-crosslinked DAM graft was further tested in vivo by implanting it in a rat abdominal aorta replacement-model. All rats implanted with the genipin-crosslinked DAM graft exhibited a blood vessel patent up to 9-month post-implantation. In conclusion, we represented a potential avenue to construct a flexible vascular graft that has the patient-specific dimension and meet specific demands for biological and mechanical performance criteria by using the DAM followed by lyophilization and the genipin.

Abstract:Background: Current systems generating lymphatic endothelial cell (LEC) from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) have limited value due to low purity, the use of undefined components for differentiation, and poor cell survival in vivo. Here, we developed a fully defined system to differentiate hPSCs into LECs and evaluated their therapeutic and engraftment potential when encapsulated in a nanomatrix gel (PA-RGDS). Methods and Results: hPSCs were cultured with GSK3β inhibitor on collagen-coated plates for 2-3 days to induce differentiation into the mesodermal lineage. The mesodermally differentiated cells were then cultured with VEGFC, VEGFA, EGF, and bFGF for another 6 days and double-sorted by PDPN and FLT4. These hPSC-PDPN+FLT4+ cells (hPSC-derived lymphatic endothelial cells, hPSC-LECs) showed highly purified and fully functional LEC characteristics in vitro. These hPSC-LECs express LEC markers such as PDPN, LYVE1, PROX1, and FLT4 at the mRNA level and the protein level, and formed tube-like structures in Matrigel. We next determined the lymphatic vascular reparative effects of engineered hPSC-LECs. After inducing lymphedema in the tail of mouse, hPSC-LECs, hPSC-LECs encapsulated with PA-RGDS, human dermal lymphatic endothelial cells (hdLEC), PA-RGDS, or PBS were injected into the tail of mouse. Tail thickness significantly decreased in the groups injected with hPSC-LECs with or without PA-RGDS compared to the other groups at day 28. At day 45, mice injected with PA-RGDS encapsulated hPSC-LECs showed significant decrease in the tail diameter compared to all other groups including those injected with hPSC-LECs. Histological examination demonstrated that the skin thickness was significantly reduced and the density of lymphatic vessels was markedly increased when the hPSC-LECs were encapsulated with PA-RGDS compared to others. Conclusion: This study demonstrated for the first time that hPSC can be differentiated into LECs in a clinically compatible manner with a high yield. Furthermore, nanomatrix encapsulated hPSC-LECs can substantially improve lymphedema in mouse tail through enhancement of cell survival and lymphatic neovascularization. This engineered hPSC-LEC therapy represents a novel option for treating lymphedema.

Abstract:While current clinical utilization of large vascular grafts for vascular transplantation is encouraging, tissue engineering of small grafts still faces numerous challenges. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of constructing a small vascular graft from the decellularized amniotic membranes (DAMs). DAMs were rolled around a catheter and each of the resulting grafts was crosslinked with a) 0.1% glutaraldehyde; b) EDC (20mM)-NHS (10mM); c) 0.5% genipin; and d) no-crosslinking, respectively. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of using a rolling technique followed by lyophilization to transform DAM into a vessel-like structure. The genipin-crosslinked DAM graft showed an improved integrated structure, prolonged stability, proper mechanical property, and superior biocompatibility. After transplantation in rat abdominal aorta, the genipin-crosslinked DAM graft remained patent up to 16-month, with both endothelial and smooth muscle cell regeneration, which suggests that the genipin-crosslinked DAM graft has great potential to be implemented as a small tissue engineered graft for future vascular transplantation.

Abstract:Synthetic vascular grafts, such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), are commonly used for large vessel surgeries [internal diameter (ID) ≥ 10 mm] but present significant challenges in medium to small vessels (ID < 10 mm) due to increased risks of thrombosis, stenosis, and infection. In this study, we developed a small-diameter vascular graft using decellularized human amniotic membrane (DAM graft) (ID = 6 mm) and transplanted it into porcine carotid arteries, comparing it with ePTFE grafts to assess inflammation, biocompatibility, patency, and overall function. One-week post-implantation, ultrasound imaging confirmed blood patency in both graft types. However, after one-month, gross examination revealed pronounced neointimal hyperplasia in ePTFE grafts, while DAM grafts maintained open lumens without signs of stenosis or thrombosis. Histological analysis showed extensive fibrous tissue formation in ePTFE grafts, resulting in luminal narrowing, whereas DAM grafts displayed sustained lumen patency and vascular integration. Immunofluorescence confirmed reduced inflammation and improved tissue organization in DAM grafts, characterized by lower macrophage infiltration and better cellular architecture. These findings suggest that DAM grafts offer superior biocompatibility and significantly lower risks of neointimal hyperplasia, making them a promising alternative for small-diameter vascular surgeries compared to ePTFE grafts.

Abstract:With the increasing occurrence of vascular diseases and poor long-term patency rates of current small diameter vascular grafts, it becomes urgent to pursuit biomaterial as scaffold to mimic blood vessel morphologically and mechanically. In this study, novel human-like collagen (HLC, produced by recombinant E. coli)/chitosan tubular scaffolds were fabricated by cross-linking and freeze-drying process. The scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and tensile test, respectively. Human venous fibroblasts were expanded and seeded onto the scaffolds in the density of 1 x 10(5) cells/cm(2). After a 15-day culture under static conditions, the cell-polymer constructs were observed using SEM, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), histological examination, and biochemical assays for cell proliferation and extracellular matrix production (collagen and glycosaminoglycans). Furthermore, the scaffolds were implanted into rabbits' livers to evaluate their biocompatibility. The results indicated that HLC/chitosan tubular scaffolds (1) exhibited interconnected porous structure; (2) achieved the desirable levels of pliability (elastic up to 30% strain) and stress of 300 +/- 16 kPa; (3) were capable of enhancing cell adhesion and proliferation and ECM secretion; (4) showed superior biocompatibility. This study suggested the feasibility of HLC/chitosan composite as a promising candidate scaffold for blood vessel tissue engineering.
Biocompatibility Evaluation of Tissue-Engineered Valved Venous Conduit by Reseeding Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Endothelial Progenitor Cells and Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cells into Heterogeneous Decellularized Venous Matrix.

Abstract:Clinical treatment of chronic deep venous insufficiency remains difficult despite the availability of various therapies. Previous experimental efforts have demonstrated that the tissue-engineered valvedvenous conduit (TEVV) is a promising option to replace the damaged venous valve. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the TEVV by reseeding bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells and multipotent adult progenitor cells into acellular matrix according to International Standard ISO10993, and to clarify their interactions with blood, the local effect after implantation both in vitro and vivo, and immunogenicity. The results showed that the 2-cm long TEVV did not cause haemolysis in vitro and remained patent without thrombosis formation in vivo. However, the luminal surface of TEVV was partially covered by multilayer cells. Compared with the native ovine femoral vein segment, the TEVV beneath the mouse skin produced significant mononuclear cell infiltration, with serum interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α similar to normal. The TEVV maintained its structural integrity, while the native ovine femoral vein segments fell apart at postoperative week nine. The TEVV implantation did not change serum immunoglobulin G. In addition, the seeds and extracts of the scaffold did not affect the proliferation of mouse lymphocytes. These findings suggest that the histocompatibility, haemocompatibility and immunogenicity of this TEVV are acceptable owing to complete removal of the cellular components of autologous seeds and residues of chemical regents, thus providing an experimental basis for further clinical translation. Vascular study of decellularized porcine long bones: Characterization of a tissue engineering model

Abstract:Introduction Massive bone allografts enable the reconstruction of critical bone defects in numerous conditions (e.g. tumoral, infection or trauma). Unfortunately, their biological integration remains insufficient and the reconstruction may suffer from several postoperative complications. Perfusion-decellularization emerges as a tissue engineering potential solution to enhance osseointegration. Therefore, an intrinsic vascular study of this novel tissue engineering tool becomes essential to understand its efficacy and applicability. Material and methods 32 porcine long bones (humeri and femurs) were used to assess the quality of their vascular network prior and after undergoing a perfusion-decellularization protocol. 12 paired bones were used to assess the vascular matrix prior ( N = 6) and after our protocol (N = 6) by immunohistochemistry. Collagen IV, Von Willebrand factor and CD31 were targeted then quantified. The medullary macroscopic vascular network was evaluated with 12 bones: 6 were decellularized and the other 6 were, as control, not treated. All 12 underwent a contrast-agent injection through the nutrient artery prior an angio CT-scan acquisition. The images were processed and the length of medullary vessels filled with contrast agent were measured on angiographic cT images obtained in control and decellularized bones by 4 independent observers to evaluate the vascular network preservation. The microscopic cortical vascular network was evaluated on 8 bones: 4 control and 4 decellularized. After injection of gelatinous fluorochrome mixture (calcein green), non-decalcified fluoroscopic microscopy was performed in order to assess the perfusion quality of cortical vascular lacunae. Results The continuity of the microscopic vascular network was assessed with Collagen IV immunohistochemistry ( p -value = 0.805) while the decellularization quality was observed through CD31 and Von Willebrand factor immunohistochemistry ( p -values <0.001). The macroscopic vascular network was severely impaired after perfusion-decellularization; nutrient arteries were still patent but the amount of medullary vascular channels measured was significantly higher in the control group compared to the decellularized group ( p -value <0.001). On average, the observers show good agreement on these results, except in the decellularized group where more inter-observer discrepancies were observed. The microscopic vascular network was observed with green fluoroscopic signal in almost every canals and lacunae of the bone cortices, in three different bone locations (proximal metaphysis, diaphysis and distal metaphysis). Conclusion Despite the aggressiveness of the decellularization protocol on medullary vessels, total porcine long bones decellularized by perfusion retain an acellular cortical microvascular network. By injection through the intact nutrient arteries, this latter vascular network can still be used as a total bone infusion access for bone tissue engineering in order to enhance massive bone allografts prior implantation.

Abstract:Controlling the formation of new lymphatic vessels has been postulated as an innovative therapeutic strategy for various disease phenotypes, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and lymphedema. Yet, compared to the blood vascular system, little is known about the molecular regulation that controls lymphatic tube formation in a synthetic matrix. In this study, we utilize hyaluronic acid (HA)-hydrogels to design a novel platform for decoupled investigation into how mechanical and biochemical cues regulate lymphatic vessel formation in a synthetic matrix. Using HA and controlling the degree of modification provides a method to preserve and modulate key lymphatic markers Prox1, LYVE-1, and Pdpn. The chemistry of the system allows for spatial and temporal patterning of specific peptides and substrate stiffnesses, and an MMP-sensitive crosslinker allowed cells to degrade and remodel their matrix. Through systematic optimization of multiple parameters, we have designed a system that allows human lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) to self-assemble into vessels in vitro within 3 days. These engineered vessels can be cultured for up to 3 weeks and can be used for high-throughput mechanistic studies, or can be implanted into immunodeficient mice where they have demonstrated the ability to integrate and mature. Collectively, these studies report a novel, fully-defined 3D synthetic matrix system capable of generating lymphatic vessels in vitro that provide promise as an in vitro screening platform and as a therapeutic vessel transplant, which to our knowledge, is the first ever 3D lymphatic tissue engineering approach to not require the use of support cells.
Hybrid Small-Diameter Vascular Grafts: Anti-expansion Effect of Electrospun Poly Ε-Caprolactone on Heparin-Coated Decellularized Matrices

Abstract:Small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs) (D < 6 mm) are increasingly needed in clinical settings for cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery and peripheral vascular pathologies. Vessels made from synthetic polymers have shortcomings such as thrombosis, intimal hyperplasia, calcification, chronic inflammation and no growth potential. Decellularized xenografts are commonly used as a tissue-engineering substitute for vascular reconstructive procedures. Although acellular allogeneic vascular grafts have good histocompatibility and antithrombotic properties, the decellularization process may damage the biomechanics and accelerate the elastin deformation and degradation, finally resulting in vascular graft expansion and even aneurysm formation. Here, to address these problems, we combine synthetic polymers with natural decellularized small-diameter vessels to fabricate hybrid tissue-engineered vascular grafts (HTEV). The donor aortic vessels were decellularized with a combination of different detergents and dehydrated under a vacuum freeze-drying process. Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers were electrospun (ES) outside the acellular aortic vascular grafts to strengthen the decellularized matrix. The intimal surfaces of the hybrid small-diameter vascular grafts were coated with heparin before the allograft transplantation. Histopathology and scanning electron microscope revealed that the media of the decellularized vessels were severely injured. Mechanical testing of scaffolds showed that ES-PCL significantly enhanced the biomechanics of decellularized vessels. Vascular ultrasound and micro-CT angiography showed that all grafts after implantation in a rat model were satisfactorily patent for up to 6 weeks. ES-PCL successfully prevented the occurrence of vasodilation and aneurysm formation after transplantation and reduced the cell inflammatory infiltration. In conclusion, the HTEV with perfect histocompatibility and biomechanics provide a facile and useful technique for the development of SDVGs.

Abstract:Synthetic small diameter vascular grafts have a high failure rate, and endothelialization is critical for preventing thrombosis and graft occlusion. A promising approach is in situ tissue engineering, whereby an acellular scaffold is implanted and provides stimulatory cues to guide the in situ remodeling into a functional blood vessel. An ideal scaffold should have sufficient binding sites for biomolecule immobilization and a mechanical property similar to native tissue. Here we developed a novel method to blend low molecular weight (LMW) elastic polymer during electrospinning process to increase conjugation sites and to improve the mechanical property of vascular grafts. LMW elastic polymer improved the elasticity of the scaffolds, and significantly increased the amount of heparin conjugated to the micro/nanofibrous scaffolds, which in turn increased the loading capacity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prolonged the release of VEGF. Vascular grafts were implanted into the carotid artery of rats to evaluate the in vivo performance. VEGF treatment significantly enhanced endothelium formation and the overall patency of vascular grafts. Heparin coating also increased cell infiltration into the electrospun grafts, thus increasing the production of collagen and elastin within the graft wall. This work demonstrates that LMW elastic polymer blending is an approach to engineer the mechanical and biological property of micro/nanofibrous vascular grafts for in situ vascular tissue engineering.
Mechanism of reflexion in silvery layers of fish and cephalopods

Abstract:The highly reflecting structures found in the integuments and eyes of fish and cephalopods were studied. In all cases they consist of alternate layers of high and low refractive index (n) material (in fish, guanine and cytoplasm) and the high refractive index material is in the form of discrete plates. The highest reflectivity at a given wavelength λ0, together with the widest waveband of high reflectivity, would be given if these alternate layers all had an optical thickness of ¼λ0. We have examined the possibility that fish and cephalopods can make ‘ideal' reflectors of this kind. The thicknesses (t) of the discrete plates released by scratching the reflecting layers were measured by interference microscopy, and it was found that although the plates from a region of a given colour sometimes varied greatly in surface area, their thicknesses were approximately constant. With one exception the optical thicknesses (nt) of the plates found in all the structures studied were between 100 and 200 nm. Many of the reflecting structures are highly coloured and in these there was almost always a good correlation between the wavebands best reflected and four times the optical thicknesses of the plates which they contained. The most ventral scales in the juvenile sprat were studied in some detail. At normal incidence these scales reflect best a waveband around 720 nm and the guanine crystals which they contain all have optical thicknesses close to one quarter of this wavelength. The changes in colour with angle of viewing, and with changes in osmotic concentration of the medium in which these scales are placed, support the idea that the spaces between the crystals are ¼λ0 spaces. These scales have a high reflectivity to the lights penetrating best into the sea at the oblique angles of incidence from which the strongest intensities of daylight fall in life. Qualitative observations on scales from herring and from other regions on the sprat supported the hypothesis that their guanine crystals were also arranged approximately in ¼λ0 stacks. Similar conclusions were reached for coloured surfaces found in the skin of the horse mackerel, the iris of the neon tetra, the reflecting tapeta of the dogfish and the spurdog, and in the eye of the squid, Loligo forbesi. In the scales of the roach, Rutilus rutilus, the crystals are of thicknesses which indicate that if in ‘ideal' ¼λ0 stacks they would at normal incidence appear red and at oblique incidence green, whilst in fact they are very little coloured. The crystals from the eyes of Callionymus lyra had 4nt around 300 nm (in the u. v.) yet the reflexions given by piles of these crystals were bronze coloured. Possible explanations of these facts are given. In cephalopods the high refractive index plates are lozenge-shaped, flexible and of refractive index about 1·56.

Abstract:The off-the-shelf small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs) have inferior clinical efficacy. Red blood cell membrane (Rm) has easy availability and multiple bioactive components (such as phospholipids, proteins, and glycoproteins), which can improve the clinic's availability and patency of SDVGs. Here we developed a facile approach to preparing an Rm-functionalized poly-ε-caprolactone/poly-d-lysine (Rm@PCL/PDL) tube by co-incubation and single-step rolling. The integrity, stability, and bioactivity of Rm on Rm@PCL/PDL were evaluated. The revascularization of Rm@PCL/PDL tubes was studied by implantation in the carotid artery of rabbits. Rm@PCL/PDL can be quickly prepared and showed excellent bioactivity with good hemocompatibility and great anti-inflammatory. Rm@PCL/PDL tubes as the substitute for the carotid artery of rabbits had good patency and quick remodeling within 21 days. Rm, as a "self" biomaterial with high biosafety, provides a new and facile approach to developing personalized or universal SDVGs for the clinic, which is of great significance in cardiovascular regenerative medicine and organ chip.
