Abstract:Proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis, particularly driven by renewable electricity, is a sustainable strategy for green hydrogen production. However, developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenging. Herein, we introduce an effective strategy for constructing high-valence metal-doped IrO x with abundant oxygen vacancies, while simultaneously enhancing the catalytic activity and stability of the acidic OER. The synthesized Ta-doped IrO x (350-Ta@IrO x ) exhibits ultramicroscopic nanoparticle morphology and abundant surface oxygen vacancies, enabling a rapid OER process with a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and 147.7 times higher mass activity (1207.4 A g Ir −1 ) than that of commercial IrO 2 at 1.55 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. More importantly, 350-Ta@IrO x affords excellent stability with insignificant potential degradation after 500 h of electrolysis at 10 mA cm 2 , originating from the low operating potential and suppressed dissolution and oxidation of oxygen vacancy active sites via Ta doping. Density functional theory calculations suggest that Ta doping and oxygen defect engineering are effective in facilitating the nucleophilic attack of water molecules, thereby accelerating the rate-determining step toward high catalytic OER activity on Ta-doped IrO x . We anticipate that this study will provide an effective method to obtain active and stable electrocatalysts via high-valence metal doping. Graphical High-valence metal doping strategy is effective for developing efficient and stable IrO x electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reactions. The optimized electrocatalyst (350-Ta@IrO x ) exhibits higher mass activity and structural stability, benefiting from the regulation of the electronic structure and strong metal-oxygen bonds. Abstract:The acidic OER performance of RuO2 is enhanced by incorporating the short‐range ordered tantalum single atoms into Ru‐O matrix. The resulting tensile strain optimizes the adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates, and the formed Ru‐O‐Ta(‐O‐Ta) local structure stabilizes the surface Ru sites thanks to the synergy of strong corrosion resistance of Ta‐O bonds and electron transfers from Ta to Ru via oxygen bridge. Ruthenium Dioxide (RuO2), as one of the most promising alternatives to IrO2, suffers from the severe dissolution and overoxidation of Ru active sites during the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which hinders its practical application. Herein, the study constructs a short‐range ordered tantalum single atoms‐doped RuO2 catalyst (Ta‐RuO2) with asymmetric Ru‐O‐Ta(‐O‐Ta) active units for the enhanced acidic OER. The Ta‐RuO2 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity with an overpotential of 201 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a long‐lasting stability of 280 h. Physical characterizations combined with electrochemical tests reveal that the incorporation of atomically arranged Ta atoms induces significant tensile strain, effectively optimizing the adsorption strength of oxygen‐containing intermediates by regulating the Ru d‐band center and weakening the Ru‐O covalency, thus boosting the catalytic activity. Furthermore, the formed Ru‐O‐Ta(‐O‐Ta) active local structure is well maintained during the OER process owing to the synergy of strong corrosion resistance of Ta‐O bonds and the electron transfers from Ta to Ru via oxygen bridge stabilizing the Ru sites, contributing to the enhanced stability. This study provides a novel method via incorporation of corrosion‐resistant and short‐range ordered single atoms to significantly enhance the acidic OER stability and activity of cost‐effective catalysts.

Abstract:Developing low-cost, efficient, and robust nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in acidic medium is the major challenge to realize the application of the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEM-WE). It is well-known that transition metal carbides (TMCs) have Pt-like electronic structures and catalytic behaviors. However, monometallic carbides in acidic medium show ignored OER activities. Herein, we reported that the catalytic activity of the TMCs can be enhanced by constructing bimetallic carbides (TiTaC2) fabricated through hydrothermal treatment followed by an annealing process, and further by doping fluorine (F) into the bimetallic carbides (TiTaFxC2). The as-prepared reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported TiTaFxC2 nanoparticles (TiTaFxC2 NP/rGO) show state-of-the-art OER catalytic activity, which is even superior to Ir/C catalyst (an onset potential of only 1.42 V vs RHE and the overpotential of 490 mV to reach 100 mA cm-2), fast kinetics (Tafel slope of only 36 mV dec-1), and high durability (maintaining the current density at 1.60 V vs RHE for 40 h). Detailed structural characterizations together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electronic structures of the bimetallic carbides have been tuned, and their possible mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Stabilizing active sites of non-iridium-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial, but remains a big challenge for hydrogen production by acidic water splitting. Here, we report that non-stoichiometric Ti oxides (TiO x ) can safeguard the Ru sites through structural-confinement and charge-redistribution, thereby extending the catalyst lifetime in acid by 10 orders of magnitude longer compared to that of the stoichiometric one (Ru/TiO 2 ). By exploiting the redox interaction-engaged strategy, the in situ growth of TiO x on Ti foam and the loading of Ru nanoparticles are realized in one step. The as-synthesized binder-free Ru/TiO x catalyst exhibits low OER overpotentials of 174 and 265 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations confirm that TiO x stabilizes the Ru active center, enabling operation at 10 mA cm −2 for over 37 days. This work opens an avenue of using non-stoichiometric compounds as stable and active materials for energy technologies.

Constructing the Oxygen Diffusion Paths for Promoting the Stability of Acidic Water Oxidation Catalysts

Abstract:Anchoring Ir onto metal-oxide support can effectively address the scarcity and insufficient activity problems of Ir-based acidic water oxidation catalysts by triggering the lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM). However, the stability of these catalysts is usually sacrificed due to support overoxidation and reconstruction during the LOM pathway. Here, we propose constructing oxygen diffusion paths at a mixed-metal oxide support (ZrOx and TaOx) interface for a stable LOM. The new synthesized Ir-ZrTaOx catalyst exhibits two orders higher mass activity than IrO2 and retains 1,000-h electrolysis. It demonstrates low degradation (4.7 mV h-1) during the 200-h operation in a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer using only 1/4 Ir loading. Operando spectroscopic evidence combined with theory studies suggests that the oxygen diffusion path at the ZrOx/TaOx interface inhibits the over oxidation and detrimental reconstruction of TaOx. The strategy of stabilizing the LOM will benefit the future design of stable and efficient water oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:As a promising alternative to Ir based acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, Ru suffers from severe fading issues. Supporting it on robust oxides such as TiO2 is a simple and effective way to enhance its lifetime. Here, we find that a simple reduction-oxidation process can further improve both activity and stability of RuO2-TiO2 composites at high potentials. In this process, the degree of oxidation was carefully controlled to form Ru/RuO2 heterostructure to improve OER activity. Moreover, due to the oxophilicity difference of Ru and Ti, the structure of catalysts was changed from supported to embedded, which enhanced the protective effect of TiO2 and mitigated the dissolution of Ru element in acidic electrolyte, making as-prepared Ru/RuO2-TiO2 with better durability at all tested potentials.

Abstract:Green hydrogen production with water splitting devices, especially a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), has received extensive attention. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still hinders its large-scale commercial application. Designing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts to drive the OER reaction remains a tough challenge. The active nanoparticles incorporating with metal oxide support is considered a promising strategy to improve durability and activity in acidic electrolytes. However, efficient synthesis methods without support premodification are rarely investigated. Herein, a simple but effective hydrothermal method accompanying the gradient annealing temperature was used to synthesize commercial TiO2 supported RuO2. The representative RuO2/TiO2-T250 required a low overpotential of 239 mV (@10 mA cm–2) with a Tafel slope value of 41.49 mV dec–1 and stability of over 20 h, far exceeding the performance of commercial RuO2. T250 exhibited a crystalline but hydrated microstructure, and the existing support-metal oxide interaction redistributed the electrons around Ru and Ti, which both gave rise to the activity of the electrocatalyst as well as hindered the Ru dissolution, thereby enhancing the OER performance. The synthesis strategy creates an important platform for designing more robust electrocatalysts for PEMWE application.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of nanosized iridium oxide-nanosheet-like based electrocatalysts synthesized by a modified Adams method is reported in this work. Cysteamine hydrochloride was introduced during the synthesis of IrO2 to induce the evo-lution of nanosheet-like morphology from spherical particles. The IrO2 crystallinity prepared by the modified Adams method was greatly affected by calcination temperature. When the temperature increases to 400 & DEG;C, the resulted iridium oxide transitions from pseudo -amorphous to crystal rutile type. Electrochemical evaluation results show that the IrO2 synthesized at 400 & DEG;C performs the best in terms of enhanced mass activity (1.104 A mg-1@1.6 V) and lower overpotential (315 mV@10 mA cm-2) as compared with the counterparts prepared at other temperatures. Ta2O5 with different molar ratios of Ir/Ta was incorporated to further improve the stability of iridium oxide and to reduce its usage as anode catalyst. Ultrathin IrO2-Ta2O5 nanosheets with optimized Ir/Ta = 7: 3 M ratio outperform the commercial IrO2 benchmark in terms of OER activity and stability. The overpotential of IrO2-Ta2O5(7: 3) is at 326 mV@10 mA cm-2, and its mass activity is as high as 0.9 A mg-1@1.6 V. Abstract:Abstract The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has significant importance in many electrochemical technologies. In proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers it plays a pivotal role for electrochemical energy conversion, yet sluggish kinetics and the corrosive environment during operation still compel significant advances in electrode materials to enable a widespread application. Up-to-date Iridium is known as the best catalyst material for the OER in acidic media due to its relatively high activity and long-term stability. However, scarcity of iridium drives the development of strategies for its efficient utilization. One promising way would be the formation of mixtures in which the noble catalyst element is dispersed in the non-noble matrix of more stable metals or metal oxides. A promising valve metal oxide is TiO x , yet the degree to which performance can be optimized by composition is still unresolved. Thus, using a scanning flow cell connected to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, we examined the activity and stability for the OER of an oxidized Ir–Ti thin film material library covering the composition range from 20–70 at.% of Ir. We find that regardless of the composition the rate of Ir dissolution is observed to be lower than that of thermally prepared IrO 2 . Moreover, mixtures containing at least 50 at.% of Ir exhibit reactivity comparable to IrO 2 . Their superior performance is discussed with complementary information obtained from atomic scale and electronic structure analysis using atom probe tomography and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Overall, our data shows that Ir–Ti mixtures can be promising OER catalysts with both high activity and high stability.

Abstract:The development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a promising technology for hydrogen production, which has always been restricted by the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although IrOx is one of the benchmark acidic OER electrocatalysts, there are still challenges in designing highly active and stable Ir-based electrocatalysts for commercial application. Herein, a Ru-doped IrOx electrocatalyst with abundant twin boundaries (TB-Ru0.3Ir0.7Ox@ITO) is reported, employing indium tin oxide with high conductivity as the support material. Combing the TB-Ru0.3Ir0.7Ox nanoparticles with ITO support could expose more active sites and accelerate the electron transfer. The TB-Ru0.3Ir0.7Ox@ITO exhibits a low overpotential of 203 mV to achieve 10 mA cm-2 and a high mass activity of 854.45 A g-1noble metal at 1.53 V vs RHE toward acidic OER, which exceeds most reported Ir-based OER catalysts. Moreover, improved long-term stability could be obtained, maintaining the reaction for over 110 h at 10 mA cm-2 with negligible deactivation. DFT calculations further reveal the activity enhancement mechanism, demonstrating the synergistic effects of Ru doping and strains on the optimization of the d-band center (εd) position and the adsorption free energy of oxygen intermediates. This work provides ideas to realize the trade-off between high catalytic activity and good stability for acidic OER electrocatalysts.
Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity‐Stability Maps for Perovskite Oxides Containing 3d, 4d and 5d Transition Metals

Abstract:Improving catalytic activity without loss of catalytic stability is one of the core goals in search of low-iridium-content oxygen evolution electrocatalysts under acidic conditions. Here, we synthesize a family of 66 SrBO3 perovskite oxides (B=Ti, Ru, Ir) with different Ti : Ru : Ir atomic ratios and construct catalytic activity-stability maps over composition variation. The maps classify the multicomponent perovskites into chemical groups with distinct catalytic activity and stability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction, and highlights a chemical region where high catalytic activity and stability are achieved simultaneously at a relatively low iridium level. By quantifying the extent of hybridization of mixed transition metal 3d-4d-5d and oxygen 2p orbitals for multicomponent perovskites, we demonstrate this complex interplay between 3d-4d-5d metals and oxygen atoms in governing the trends in both activity and stability as well as in determining the catalytic mechanism involving lattice oxygen or not.

Abstract:Novel porous Te–RuO2 nanotubes: The Te–doped RuO2 nanotubes as OER electrocatalysts are fabricated through a template‐directed synthesis method, featuring a remarkable specific surface area. The Te dopant effectively modulates the electronic structure of the Ru sites, significantly enhancing their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. These findings present a promising strategy for the rational design and development of superior electrocatalytic systems. Electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a crucial role in achieving cost‐effective hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. A novel electrocatalyst, Te‐doped RuO2 (Te–RuO2) nanotubes, synthesized using a template‐directed process, which significantly enhances the OER performance in acidic media is reported. The Te–RuO2 nanotubes exhibit remarkable OER activity in acidic media, requiring an overpotential of only 171 mV to achieve an anodic current density of 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, they maintain stable chronopotentiometric performance under 10 mA cm−2 in acidic media for up to 50 h. Based on the experimental results and density functional calculations, this significant improvement in OER performance to the synergistic effect of large specific surface area and modulated electronic structure resulting from the doping of Te cations is attributed.

Abstract:The process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting is intricate and demands a substantial amount of energy. It necessitates the utilization of catalysts that are both highly efficient and durable in order to overcome the slow reaction kinetics. Amorphous, high-entropy oxide nanoparticles were prepared using simple one-step coprecipitation in this work. Due to highly disordered atomic arrangement in the amorphous structure of these catalysts and their high specific surface area, they compete to form active sites in the OER. Among them, IrRuCrFeCoNiO x demonstrated the optimal OER catalytic activity, requiring just a low overpotential (190 mV) with minimal Tafel slope (51.1 mV dec −1 ) to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Through surface self-reconstruction in the OER, a crystalline active layer with a thickness of several nanometers formed on the catalyst's surface. The stable core-shell nanoarchitectures composed of crystalline and amorphous regions substantially improved the stability of the catalyst. This work verified the effectiveness of high-entropy design and the significant improvement of noble metal doping on OER performance. It develops a new OER catalyst for water splitting with great activity and stability.

Abstract:Developing earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction is essential for H 2 production, yet it remains greatly challenging. Here, guided by the theoretical calculations, the challenge of overcoming the balance between catalytic activity and dynamic durability for acidic OER in Co 3 O 4 was effectively addressed via the preferential substitution of Ru for the Co 2+ (T d ) site of Co 3 O 4 . In-situ characterizations and DFT calculation unravel that the enhanced Co-O covalency after the introduction of Ru SAs facilitates the generation of OH* species and mitigates the unstable structure transformation via the direct O-O coupling. The designed Ru SAs-CoO x catalyst (5.16 wt% Ru) exhibits enhanced OER activity (188 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm -2 ) and durability, outperforming most reported Co 3 O 4 -based and Ru-based electrocatalysts in acidic media.

Abstract:Efficient and stable water-splitting electrocatalysts play a key role to obtain green and clean hydrogen energy. However, only a few kinds of materials display an intrinsically good performance towards water splitting. It is significant but challengeable to effectively improve the catalytic activity of inert or less active catalysts for water splitting. Herein, we present a structural/electronic modulation strategy to convert inert AlOOH nanorods into catalytic nanosheets for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via ball milling, plasma etching and Co doping. Compared to inert AlOOH, the modulated AlOOH delivers much better OER performance with a low overpotential of 400 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a very low Tafel slope of 52 mV dec-1, even lower than commercial OER catalyst RuO2. Significant performance enhancement is attributed to the electronic and structural modulation. The electronic structure is effectively improved by Co doping, ball milling-induced shear strain, plasma etching-caused rich vacancies; abrupt morphology/microstructure change from nanorod to nanoparticle to nanosheet, as well as rich defects caused by ball milling and plasma etching, can significantly increase active sites; the free energy change of the potential determining step of modulated AlOOH decreases from 2.93 eV to 1.70 eV, suggesting a smaller overpotential is needed to drive the OER processes. This strategy can be extended to improve the electrocatalytic performance for other materials with inert or less catalytic activity.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involving multi-step electron transfer is a challenging approach for water-splitting due to its sluggish kinetics. It is desirable to explore more efficient electro-catalysts with earth-abundant elements. Herein, we employed a high-temperature polymerization method to develop a structure consisting of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanopatch enveloped carbon nanotubes (CNTs), where isolated Ni and Fe atoms were embedded into the tri-s-triazine units of g-C3N4 by forming a metal–Nx structure. The designed dual-metal catalyst exhibited remarkable OER performance with an extremely low overpotential (∼326 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and a small Tafel slope (67 mV per decade), which is superior to those of state-of-the-art electrocatalysts with metal–Nx coordination and the benchmark IrO2/C catalyst. In combination with atomic microscopy observations, our synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy results revealed that, as compared to single-metal (Fe or Ni) doped hybrids, the electronic structures of both Ni and Fe atoms were reconfigured in the obtained dual-metal samples. Notably, increase of the oxidative state in Ni sites after multi-metal doping directly contributed to more active sites and favored the OER process, assisted by the porous structure and good electrical contacts between CNTs and g-C3N4. This investigation clearly demonstrated a unique synergistic effect in atomically dual-metal doped catalysts, thus it may provide a versatile route to regulate the electronic structures of single atomic catalysts through engineering of neighboring elements and coordination number.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic activity of titanium based IrO2+Ta2O5 anodes for oxygen evolution has been investigated by polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. It was shown that the mixed oxide anodes exhibited the highest activity at 70% (mole fraction) IrO2 content. Th-is result was interpreted by the maximum surface concentration of active component IrO2 with the corresponding composition and by the most significant increase of the amount of surface active site after attacking by the evaluated oxygen. Accordingly, the thermodynamic and kinetic criterions determining the electrocatalytic activity of oxide anodes for oxygen evolution have been proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials without metal possess great potential in oxygen evolution reactions (OER). However, the synthesis process is complex and the energy waste is large (i.e. calcination). Molecular electrocatalysts , as a new type of electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution, have attracted a wide amount of attention. In this work, taurine (TA) was selected as an OER electrocatalyst, and the catalytic activity of TA was studied via theoretical calculations and experiment. The DFT results show that the OH in the electrolyte tends to adsorb on C or N and takes away the H atom on the amino group to form uncoordinated N atoms in TA molecules. In addition, the TA molecule is fixed in a conductive hydrogel with a hydrophilic surface, and the conductive network on the hydrogel further accelerates charge and mass transfer in the OER process. Therefore, this work opens the way for further research on molecular electrocatalysts.
