Abstract:Wound infections, exacerbated by the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens, necessitate innovative antimicrobial approaches. Polymicrobial infections, often involving and methicillin-resistant (MRSA), present formidable challenges due to biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a potent antimicrobial agent produced naturally by the immune system, holds promise as an alternative therapy. An electrochemical bandage (e-bandage) that generates HOCl was evaluated for treatment of murine wound biofilm infections containing both MRSA and with “difficult-to-treat” resistance. Previously, the HOCl-producing e-bandage was shown to reduce wound biofilms containing alone. Compared to non-polarized e-bandage (no HOCl production) and Tegaderm only controls, the polarized e-bandages reduced bacterial loads in wounds infected with MRSA plus (MRSA: vs Tegaderm only – 1.4 log CFU/g, p = 0.0015, vs. non-polarized – 1.1 log CFU/g, p = 0.026. : vs Tegaderm only – 1.6 log CFU/g, p = 0.0015, vs non-polarized – 1.6 log CFU/g, p = 0.0032), and MRSA alone (vs Tegaderm only – 1.3 log CFU/g, p = 0.0048, vs. non-polarized – 1.1 log CFU/g, p = 0.0048), without compromising wound healing or causing tissue toxicity. Addition of systemic antibiotics did not enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of e-bandages, highlighting their potential as standalone therapies. This study provides additional evidence for the HOCl-producing e-bandage as a novel antimicrobial strategy for managing wound infections, including in the context of antibiotic resistance and polymicrobial infections.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens necessitates the development of alternative antimicrobial approaches. This is particularly true for chronic wound infections, which commonly harbor biofilm-dwelling bacteria. A novel electrochemical bandage (e-bandage) delivering low-levels of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) was evaluated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa murine wound biofilms. 5 mm skin wounds were created on the dorsum of mice and infected with 10 6 colony-forming units (CFU) of P. aeruginosa . Biofilms were formed over 2 days, after which e-bandages were placed on the wound beds and covered with Tegaderm. Mice were administered Tegaderm-only (control), non-polarized e-bandage (no HOCl production), or polarized e-bandage (using an HOCl-producing potentiostat), with or without systemic amikacin. Purulence and wound areas were measured before and after treatment. After 48 hours, wounds were harvested for bacterial quantification. Forty-eight hours of polarized e-bandage treatment resulted in mean biofilm reductions of 1.4 log 10 CFUs/g ( P = 0.0107) vs non-polarized controls and 2.2 log 10 CFU/g ( P = 0.004) vs Tegaderm-only controls. Amikacin improved CFU reduction in Tegaderm-only ( P = 0.0045) and non-polarized control groups ( P = 0.0312) but not in the polarized group ( P = 0.3876). Compared to the Tegaderm-only group, there was less purulence in the polarized group ( P = 0.009). Wound closure was neither impeded nor improved by either polarized or non-polarized e-bandage treatment. Concurrent amikacin did not impact wound closure or purulence. In conclusion, an HOCl-producing e-bandage reduced P. aeruginosa in wound biofilms with no impairment in wound healing, representing a promising antibiotic-free approach for addressing wound infection.

Abstract:Abstract Background Biofilms formed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wound beds present unique challenges in terms of treating wound infections. In this work, the in vivo anti-biofilm activity of a novel electrochemical bandage (e-bandage) designed to continuously deliver low amounts of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) was evaluated against wound biofilm infections caused by a clinical isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to all antibiotic classes except aminoglycosides. Methods 5 mm skin wounds were created on the dorsal surface of Swiss-Webster mice and infected with 106 CFU of P. aeruginosa. Biofilms were allowed to form over 2 days, after which e-bandages with TegadermTM or Tegaderm only were placed on the wound beds. Specifically, mice were randomized to one of three experimental groups (n = 7-8): 1) Tegaderm only (control); 2) non-polarized e-bandage; 3) polarized e-bandage using a wearable potentiostat. After 48 hours, animals were sacrificed and 10 mm skin biopsies containing the wound and surrounding tissue were harvested for bacterial quantification. Histopathology was performed on H&E-stained sections of wound beds from each treatment group. Blood was screened with an inflammatory cytokine panel. Wound healing (% area reduction; digital measurement) and purulence (observational scoring) were assessed in pre- and post-treatment wounds. Results 48 hours of polarized e-bandage treatment resulted in a mean reduction of 1.86 log10 biofilm CFUs/g (p < 0.0001) vs non-polarized controls, and 2.18 log10 CFU/g reduction (p < 0.0001) vs Tegaderm only controls (polarized, 7.6 ± 0.66 log10 CFU/g; non-polarized, 9.45 ± 0.26 log+10 CFU/g; Tegaderm only, 9.78 ± 0.16 log10 CFU/g). Compared to Tegaderm only, purulence reduction and wound healing were significantly higher for both non-polarized (purulence - p < 0.0001; healing - p < 0.01 ) and polarized treatment (purulence - p < 0.0001; healing - p < 0.0001) groups, but were not significantly different from each other. Histopathology and blood inflammation panel testing showed no significant differences between groups. Conclusion An HOCl-producing e-bandage reduced P. aeruginosa in wound biofilms, representing a potential antibiotic-free strategy for the treatment of recalcitrant wound infections. The degree of biocidal activity of intermittent treatment with HOCl and H2O2 correlated with HOCl treatment time; HOCl treatment durations of 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6 hours (with the rest of the 6-hour total treatment time devoted to H2O2 generation) resulted in mean biofilm reductions of 1.36 ± 0.2, 2.22 ± 0.16, 3.46 ± 0.38, 4.63 ± 0.74, and 7.66 ± 0.5 log CFU/cm2, respectively, vs. non-polarized controls, respectively. However, application of H2O2 immediately after HOCl treatment was detrimental to biofilm removal. For example, 3 hours HOCl treatment followed by 3 hours H2O2 resulted in a 1.90 ± 0.84 log CFU/cm2 lower mean biofilm reduction than 3 hours HOCl treatment followed by 3 hours non-polarization. HOCl generated over 3 hours exhibited biocidal activity for at least 7.5 hours after e-bandage operation ceased; 3 hours of HOCl generation followed by 7.5 hours of non-polarization resulted in a biofilm cell reduction of 7.92 ± 0.12 log CFU/cm2 vs. non-polarized controls. Finally, intermittent treatment with HOCl (i.e., interspersed with periods of e-bandage non-polarization) for various intervals showed similar effects (approximately 6 log CFU/cm2 reduction vs. non-polarized control) to continuous treatment with HOCl for 3 hours, followed by 3 hours of non-polarization. These findings suggest that timing and sequencing of HOCl and H2O2 treatments are crucial for maximizing biofilm control when using an e-bandage strategy.

Abstract:Electrochemical bandages (e-bandages) can be applied to biofilm-infected wounds to generate reactive oxygen species, such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) or hydrogen peroxide (H O ). The e-bandage-generated HOCl or H O kills biofilms and in infected wounds on mice. The HOCl-generating e-bandage is more active against biofilms , although this distinction is less apparent . The H O -generating e-bandage, more than the HOCl-generating e-bandage, is associated with improved healing of infected wounds. A strategy in which H O and HOCl are generated alternately—for dual action—was explored. The goal was to develop a programmable multimodal wearable potentiostat (PMWP) that could be programmed to generate HOCl or H O , as needed. An ultralow-power microcontroller unit managed operation of the PMWP. The system was operated with a 260-mAh capacity coin battery and weighed 4.6 grams, making it suitable for small animal experiments or human use. The overall cost of a single wearable potentiostat was $6.50 (USD). The device was verified using established electrochemical systems and functioned comparably to a commercial potentiostat. To determine antimicrobial effectiveness, PMWP-controlled e-bandages were tested against clinical isolates of four prevalent chronic wound bacterial pathogens, methicillin-resistant (MRSA), , and , and one fungal pathogen of emerging concern, . PMWP-controlled e-bandages exhibited broad-spectrum activity against biofilms of all study isolates tested when programmed to deliver HOCl followed by H O . These results show that the PMWP operates effectively and is suitable for animal testing.

Hypochlorous Acid-Generating Electrochemical Catheter Prototype for Prevention of Intraluminal Infection

Abstract:Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) contributes to mortality and cost. While aseptic dressings and antibiotic-impregnated catheters prevent some extraluminal infections, intraluminal infections remain a source of CLABSIs. In this proof-of-concept study, an electrochemical intravascular catheter (e-catheter) prototype capable of electrochemically generating hypochlorous acid intraluminally using platinum electrodes polarized at a constant potential of 1.5 electrode potential relative to saturated silver/silver chloride reference electrode measured in volts (VAg/AgCl) was developed. After 24 h of prepolarization at 1.5 VAg/AgCl, their activity was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecium, and Escherichia coli derived from catheter-related infections. e-catheters generated a mean HOCl concentration of 15.86 ± 4.03 μM and had a mean pH of 6.14 ± 0.79. E-catheters prevented infections of all four species, with an average reduction of 8.41 ± 0.61 log10 CFU/ml at 48 h compared to controls. Polarized e-catheters which generate low amounts of HOCl continuously should be further developed to prevent intraluminal infection. IMPORTANCE Catheter-related infections constitute an economic and mortality burden in health care. Several options are available to reduce the risk of infection, but only a few focus on preventing intraluminal infection, which occurs in long-term catheters, most often used for dialysis, prolonged treatment, or chemotherapy. A prototype of a catheter called an "e-catheter" composed of three electrodes, capable of producing hypochlorous acid (HOCl) electrochemically in its lumen, was developed. When polarized at 1.5 V, chloride ions in the solution are oxidized to continuously produce low amounts of HOCl, which exhibits antibacterial activity in the lumen of the catheter. Here, this prototype was shown to be able to generate HOCl as well as prevent infection in a preliminary in vitro catheter model. This approach is a potential strategy for catheter infection prevention.
Catechol Cross-Linked Antimicrobial Peptide Hydrogels Prevent Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii Infection in Burn Wounds.

Abstract:Hospital-acquired infections are common in burn patients and are the major contributors of morbidity and mortality. Bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) are difficult to treat due to their biofilm formation and rapidly acquiring resistance to antibiotics. This work presents a newly developed hydrogel that has the potential for treating bacterial wound infections. The hydrogel formulation is based on an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), epsilon-poly-l-lysine (EPL) and catechol, which was cross-linked via mussel-inspired chemistry between the amine and phenol groups. In vitro studies showed that EPL-catechol hydrogels possess impressive antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties toward multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MRAB). In addition, cytotoxicity study with the clonal mouse myoblast cell line (C2C12) revealed the good biocompatibility of this hydrogel. Furthermore, we created a second-degree burn wound on the mice dorsal skin surface followed by contamination with MRAB. Our results showed that the hydrogel significantly reduced the bacterial burden by more than four orders of magnitude in infected burn wounds. Additionally, there was no significant histological alteration with hydrogel application on mice skin. Based on these results, we concluded that EPL-catechol hydrogel is a promising future biomaterial to fight against multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
Electrochemical scaffold generates localized, low concentration of hydrogen peroxide that inhibits bacterial pathogens and biofilms

Abstract:We hypothesized that low concentrations of H2O2 could be generated through the electrochemical conversion of oxygen by applying an electric potential to a conductive scaffold and produce a low, but constant, concentration of H2O2 that would be sufficient to destroy biofilms. To test our hypothesis we used a multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strain, because this species is often implicated in difficult-to-treat biofilm infections. We used conductive carbon fabric as the scaffold material ("e-scaffold"). In vitro experiments demonstrated the production of a maximum constant concentration of ~25 μM H2O2 near the e-scaffold surface. An e-scaffold was overlaid onto an existing A. baumannii biofilm, and within 24 h there was a ~4-log reduction in viable bacteria with an ~80% decrease in biofilm surface coverage. A similar procedure was used to overlay an e-scaffold onto an existing A. baumannii biofilm that was grown on a porcine explant. After 24 h, there was a ~3-log reduction in viable bacteria from the infected porcine explants with no observable damage to the underlying mammalian tissue based on a viability assay and histology. This research establishes a novel foundation for an alternative antibiotic-free wound dressing to eliminate biofilms.
Mussel-Inspired Hydrogel with Potent in Vivo Contact-Active Antimicrobial and Wound Healing Promoting Activities

Abstract:Open wounds (e.g., burns and trauma) are always challenged by various opportunistic bacteria. There is an urgent need for developing novel wound dressing that is able to prevent bacterial infection and promote the healing simultaneously. Herein, we developed a new type of antimicrobial hydrogels for the open wound healing through imitating a facile mussel-inspired catechol/polyamine chemistry. This hydrogel was prepared using catechol (CT) and ε-poly-l-lysine (EPL) by oxidative cross-linking directly in the open air at room temperature. This nonleaching CT/EPL hydrogel not only exhibited excellent contact-active antimicrobial activities against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive "superbug" methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) but also inhibited the biofilm formation in vitro. Moreover, the animal burn wound model study clearly validated the in vivo anti-infective property of CT/EPL hydrogel against MRSA infection. More importantly, the CT/EPL hydrogel possessed low cytotoxicity and enhanced cell migration in vitro. A full-thickness cutaneous wound model study revealed that CT/EPL hydrogel upregulated the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and reduced the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus promoted the wound healing. These findings suggested that the CT/EPL hydrogel have great potential as a wound dressing for preventing bacterial infection and accelerating healing of open wounds.

Abstract:Dear Editor, Wounds, especially chronic wounds and associated infections, impose a substantial burden on individuals and healthcare systems, leading to escalated morbidity rates and a significant ris in healthcare costs. Chronic wounds create ideal conditions for infection and the formation of biofilms, making it essential to implement comprehensive wound care techniques to promote wound healing1. Antiseptics are substances that impede or eradicate pathogens found within wounds or on the skin. Iodine-based agents such as povidone-iodine (PVP-I) have been used to treat wounds for decades. PVP-I is widely used and accepted due to its broad activity spectrum against gram-positive and negative bacteria, no development of cross-resistance upon use and its ability to penetrate biofilms. While being widely utilized worldwide, certain concerns have been raised regarding hypersensitivity, inadequate penetration, and potential cytotoxicity on host cells associated with its use. Reports have emerged documenting instances of both immediate and delayed allergic reactions to PVP-I. There have also been reports of iodine toxicity in patients when PVP-I was used as a constant wound irrigant2. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a potent antimicrobial compound naturally synthesized by the immune system. It exhibits remarkable efficacy against a wide range of bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens, effectively neutralizing their presence. A study conducted by Sakarya et al. concluded that stabilized HOCl solution is minimally allergenic as it’s produced naturally in the body and is also an ideal wound care solution3. A few comparative studies have been conducted between HOCl and PVP-I. In very recent research, it was concluded that in neonatal circumcision, the group of patients that used PVP-I had a greater occurrence of edema and delayed wound healing as compared to patients that used HOCl4. Moreover, PVP-I has been demonstrated to be cytotoxic to cellular components of wound healing while HOCl controls bacterial spread without disrupting the wound healing process as it is non-cytotoxic to cells at concentrations that achieve antimicrobial action. The amount of exudate also decreases when Hypochlorous acid is used instead of Povidone iodine5. To sum it up, Physicians and nurses face a formidable hurdle in identifying a topical antiseptic agent that is both safe and efficacious. PVP-I is being widely used as an antiseptic agent for wound healing but patients do experience some side effects. Research suggests that hypochlorous acid is also an effective option to treat lesions with less adverse effects, although more research should be conducted to reach absolute conclusive results.

Abstract:The advancement of biomaterials possessing both antimicrobial and wound‐healing properties for the treatment of wound infections continues to pose a formidable challenge. The present study introduces a novel sequential immunomodulation strategy predicated on the immune characteristics of bacterial‐associated wounds. This approach employs an innovative hybrid hydrogel dressing designed to expedite the healing process of infected wounds effectively and rapidly. Developing biomaterials with antimicrobial and wound‐healing activities for the treatment of wound infections remains challenging. Macrophages play non‐negligible roles in healing infection‐related wounds. In this study, a new sequential immunomodulatory approach is proposed to promote effective and rapid wound healing using a novel hybrid hydrogel dressing based on the immune characteristics of bacteria‐associated wounds. The hydrogel dressing substrate is derived from a porcine dermal extracellular matrix (PADM) and loaded with a new class of bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGns) doped with copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) ions (Cu–Zn BGns). This hybrid hydrogel demonstrates a controlled release of Cu2+ and Zn2+ and sequentially regulates the phenotypic transition of macrophages from M1 to M2 by alternately activating nucleotide‐binding oligomerization domain (NOD) and inhibiting mitogen‐activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathways. Additionally, its dual‐temporal bidirectional immunomodulatory function facilitates enhanced antibacterial activity and wound healing. Hence, this novel hydrogel is capable of safely and efficiently accelerating wound healing during infections. As such, the design strategy provides a new direction for exploring novel immunomodulatory biomaterials to address current clinical challenges related to the treatment of wound infections.

Impact of Interfering Substances on the Bactericidal Efficacy of Different Commercially Available Hypochlorous Acid-Based Wound Irrigation Solutions Commonly Found in South-East Asia

Abstract:The high prevalence of chronic wounds is a growing concern. Recently, hypochlorous acid (HOCl)-based solutions were introduced as an alternative antimicrobial for wound cleansing. In this study, we assessed the in vitro bactericidal activities of seven commercially available wound irrigation products commonly found in South-East Asia. The evaluation was conducted using quantitative suspension method, EN 13727 in either low or high protein conditions. Under low protein conditions, four out of the five HOCl products achieved bactericidal activity (≥5 log10 reduction factor; RF) within 2–5 min, and only one product achieved 5 log10 RF at 15 s. None of the HOCl achieved 5 log10 RF under high protein, even after 30 min of exposure time. In contrast, protein interference on the antimicrobial activities of polyhexamethylene biguanide-based product is less pronounced (low protein: 60 s vs. high protein: 2 min to attain ≥5 log10 RF). Octenidine dihydrochloride is the only active not affected by protein interference achieving ≥5 log10 RF within 15 s in both low and high protein conditions. These findings warrant the need to screen antimicrobial wound care products, especially HOCl-based products, in high protein condition to better reflect the antimicrobial activities in wound care.

Abstract:The most prevalent complication arising from skin injuries is bacterial infection, where pathogenic bacteria proliferate significantly at the wound site, leading to subsequent complications like septic shock and sepsis. Although antibiotics presently effectively manage wound infections caused by common bacteria, the escalating prevalence of antibiotic-resistant strains necessitates urgent novel approaches for addressing such infections. Here, we present CS9P1-RA, a dual functional hydrogel dressing, based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix crosslinked through hydrogen bonding. CS9P1-RA combines chitosan (CS), a food-derived antibacterial agent, with the natural compound rosmarinic acid (RA) to specifically target skin injuries caused by MRSA. Computational and molecular biology assays illustrate RA's ability to selectively inhibit the activity of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) serine/threonine phosphatase (Stp1), reducing the S. aureus pathogenicity. CS9P1-RA showcases exceptional antibacterial efficacy (MIC = 1 mg/mL) and demonstrates potency in reducing virulence (IC 50 = 7.424 μM on Stp1). Notably, it effectively curbs bacterial growth and accelerates wound healing in the mice model, thereby fulfilling the practical requirements for clinical applications. Moreover, the mechanical properties of CS9P1-RA ensure user comfort during treatment. This work introduces a fresh design paradigm for dressing materials, offering a promising solution for treating skin injuries inflicted by antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract:PurposeMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection on wounds possesses a high risk in increased cases of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Antibiotic-loaded composite biopolymer film wound dressings are one approach to cover the chronic wound area, promote the healing process, and create suitable healing environments. In this study, we developed clindamycin (Cly)-loaded composite biopolymer films using hydrogel-forming biopolymers, such as sodium alginate (SA), pectin (P), and hyaluronic acid (HA) for the treatment of MRSA-infected wounds.MethodsComposite films were prepared using a solvent casting method. Cly-loaded composites hydrogel films were evaluated for their physical properties (e.g., film thickness, surface morphology, pH, water vapor transmission, expansion profile, and fluid uptake), in vitro drug release, in vitro bactericidal effects, and in vivo wound healing activity in an ICR mouse model of MRSA-infected wounds.ResultsThin, transparent, and highly absorbent Cly-loaded SA-P (Cly/SA-P) and Cly-loaded SA-P-HA (Cly/SA-P-HA) film dressings were successfully prepared with good physical properties. The Cly/SA-P and Cly/SA-P-HA films exhibited drug release over 12 h under immersed conditions and potent antibacterial activity against MRSA (> 5 log reduction in bacterial viability). Furthermore, compared with the other groups, the Cly/SA-P-HA-treated group significantly accelerated the healing and re-epithelialization of wounds in a mouse model of MRSA-infected wounds. All prepared film dressings were not toxic to healthy fibroblast cells.ConclusionThus, the Cly-loaded composite hydrogel film prepared in this study could be a promising wound dressing for the treatment of infected cutaneous wounds.

Abstract:Electrolyzed acid solutions produced by different methods have antiseptic properties due to the presence of chlorine and reactive oxygen species. Our aim was to determine whether a controlled-flow electrolyzed acid solution (CFEAS) has the ability to improve wound healing due to its antiseptic and antibiofilm properties. First, we demonstrated in vitro that Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria were susceptible to CFEAS, and the effect was partially sustained for 24 h, evidencing antibiofilm activity (p < 0.05, CFEAS-treated vs. controls). The partial cytotoxicity of CFEAS was mainly observed in macrophages after 6 h of treatment; meanwhile, fibroblasts resisted short-lived free radicals (p < 0.05, CFEAS treated vs. controls), perhaps through redox-regulating mechanisms. In addition, we observed that a single 24 h CFEAS treatment of subacute and chronic human wounds diminished the CFU/g of tissue by ten times (p < 0.05, before vs. after) and removed the biofilm that was adhered to the wound, as we observed via histology from transversal sections of biopsies obtained before and after CFEAS treatment. In conclusion, the electrolyzed acid solution, produced by a novel method that involves a controlled flow, preserves the antiseptic and antibiofilm properties observed in other, similar formulas, with the advantage of being safe for eukaryotic cells; meanwhile, the antibiofilm activity is sustained for 24 h, both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Antibacterial hydrogels are attracting extensive attention in soft tissue repair and regeneration, including bacteria-infected-wound healing. The abuse of antibiotics leads to drug resistance. Recent developments have demonstrated that the delivery of inorganic bactericidal agents in hydrogels can drive the wound healing process; however, this approach is complicated by external light stimuli, cytotoxicity, nondegradability, and sophisticated fabrication. Herein, an inherent antibacterial, bioresorbable hydrogel was developed by the spontaneous self-aggregation of amphiphilic, oxadiazole-group-decorated quaternary ammonium salts (QAS)-conjugated poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCEC-QAS) micellar nanoantimicrobials for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected cutaneous wound healing. The PCEC-QAS hydrogel showed a stable gel state within the temperature range of 5–50 °C and antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-negative and -positive bacteria in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, the PCEC-QAS hydrogel facilitated the cell spreading, proliferation, and migration without cytotoxicity. An in vivo degradation and skin defect healing study suggested the PCEC-QAS hydrogel was totally absorbed without local or systemic toxicity and could promote wound repair in the absence of drugs, cytokines, or cells. Significantly, this hydrogel accelerated the regeneration of a MRSA-infected full-thickness impaired skin wound by successfully reconstructing an intact and thick epidermis similar to normal mouse skin.
