Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a virtual mindfulness meditation intervention on stress and anxiety levels of 145 nursing students. Background: Because of the twin demands of classroom and clinical workloads, nursing students experience greater amounts of stress and anxiety than the average college student. Mindfulness meditation is a promising method to alleviate stress and anxiety. Method: A pretest-posttest randomized controlled design was used. Participants received either weekly mindfulness meditation recordings or recordings on nursing information. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale. Results: A two-way mixed analysis of variance and follow-up simple main effects tests revealed that participants in the experimental group, who received meditation recordings, experienced significantly lower levels of stress and anxiety on posttest surveys than the control group. Conclusion: Mindfulness meditation can reduce stress and anxiety levels in nursing students. This can improve students' overall mental and physical well-being.

Abstract:
Addressing Nursing Students' Anxiety During Simulation Sessions: A Pilot Intervention Study

Abstract:Background: Although simulation-based education plays a vital role in nursing education, it consistently induces high levels of anxiety among nursing students. This study aimed to implement a mindfulness intervention to alleviate anxiety in nursing students during simulation sessions. Method: This randomized controlled trial study included 54 nursing students. Both survey and emotion track system data were collected and analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance. Results: The intervention effectively reduced anxiety among students in the experimental group compared with students in the control group during simulation sessions. The frequency (F[1, 53] = 6.145, p = .016), intensity (F[1, 51] = 3.771, p = .050), and duration of anxiety felt by students (F[1, 50] = 4.223, p = .017) decreased after the intervention. However, no long-term effects of the intervention were identified. Conclusion: The implementation of a mindfulness intervention successfully alleviated anxiety among nursing students during simulation. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(9):577-583.].

Abstract:Anxiety is a growing concern among college students and often surrounds the required testing that assesses a student’s knowledge and ability to apply this knowledge to situations in nursing. If nursing students’ anxiety is not addressed, this may impact their ability to perform well on exams and be successful in their nursing program. Research supports the idea that anxiety reduction strategies can lower levels of test anxiety for those in nursing programs. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of test anxiety of students in a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and to examine the use of a brief meditation video on students’ anxiety levels. A pre-test/post-test design was utilized to assess the test anxiety levels of sophomore and senior nursing students at the beginning of the semester and before their first and second exams. The results of this study found that 79.8% of the students (n = 52) reported a moderate to an extremely high level of test anxiety. In addition, there was a statistically significant (p < .000) reduction in anxiety levels at the first and second exams after implementing the meditation video compared to scores at the beginning of the semester. Based on these findings, nursing programs should consider including meditation as a strategy to reduce test anxiety in students. The program was cost-effective and would be easy to implement into a nursing program’s curriculum.

Abstract:Introduction: High levels of stress and anxiety are usually experienced by students as a result of peer pressure and concerns about college. Students who struggle to control their stress and anxiety may experience mood swings, behavioural changes, and even depression. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation on depression, anxiety, and stress among undergraduate nursing students. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted at Yenepoya Nursing College, Yenepoya (deemed to be University), and Zulekha Nursing College, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India for a duration of five weeks from April 2022 to May 2022. A total of 84 study participants were enrolled and divided into two groups: the intervention group (n=42) and the control group (n=42). The intervention group received mindfulness meditation for 15 minutes, twice a day in the morning and evening for four weeks. The Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42) was used to assess depression, anxiety, and stress in both groups. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23.0. Baseline data were presented using frequency and percentage. Two-factor repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni post-hoc tests were adopted to assess the difference between pre and post-test scores for stress, anxiety, and depression in repeated intervals. The level of significance was set at p-value <0.05. Results: A comparison within the intervention group at different time points showed a significant difference in the reduction of stress, anxiety, and depression from the pretest after the administration of mindfulness meditation (p-value<0.05). The reduction of stress, anxiety, and depression in the intervention group was significantly different from the control group (p-value<0.05). Conclusion: Mindfulness meditation significantly reduces stress, anxiety, and depression among students. Hence, it can be incorporated into daily life to help individuals deal with a variety of stressful events.

Abstract:The clinical setting is a significant learning environment for undergraduate nursing students. However, the learning that occurs in this environment presents challenges that may cause students to experience stress and anxiety. High levels of anxiety can affect students' clinical performance, presenting a clear threat to success in a clinical rotation. It is crucial for clinical nursing faculty to foster a supportive learning environment conducive to undergraduate nursing student learning. The purpose of this article is to provide clinical nursing faculty with the current literature related to humor, peer instructors and mentors, and mindfulness training as strategies to decrease undergraduate student nurse anxiety in the clinical setting. The Neuman Systems Model is used as a theoretical framework, and the application of this model to humor, peer instructors and mentors, and mindfulness training is examined.

Abstract:Abstract: Introduction: Stress is a state in which the body homeostasis is threatened, leading to adaptive, physiological and behavioral responses. Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling that occurs whenever a future potential threat is perceived. Whenever these states are prolonged, both lead to metabolic, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric and immunological consequences. University students are more susceptible to stress and anxiety symptoms than the general population. Mindfulness is a technique that allows its practitioners to become more aware of their emotions, dealing with stress in a more skilled way. Objective: To; evaluate the efficacy of a modified mindfulness program in reducing stress and anxiety symptoms in medicine and dentistry undergraduate students. Methods: This was a single blinded, randomized, clinical trial. Students from the aforementioned courses enrolled in the 1st to the 8th semesters of a higher education institution, answered Lipp’s Inventory of Stress symptoms for Adults (ISSL) (n=418) and the State-Trace Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (n=369). Those who showed a positive score for symptoms of stress and/or anxiety and accepted to take part in the intervention (n=59), were randomized into one of the two groups - mindfulness (a 2-week modified program), or control. After the intervention, the students were asked to answer the STAI and ISSL tools once again. Results: The global prevalence of stress and anxiety symptoms were 67% (n=280) and 76.4% (n=282), respectively. At the end of the second week, symptoms of stress and anxiety decreased 30.8% and 22.2%, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between the mindfulness and control groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Symptoms of stress and anxiety are highly prevalent among the studied population. Among medicine and dentistry undergraduate students in this higher education institution, a shortened mindfulness program was unable to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety in a statistically significant way when compared to a control group.
Sitting Meditation and Mindfulness Effects on Overall Anxiety and Test Anxiety Among College Students

Abstract:Research shows that mindfulness interventions for test anxiety in a college student population are beneficial (Lothes, Matney, & Naseer, 2022). This study assessed the effects of online mindfulness practices over a 5‐week period on anxiety and test anxiety in college students. Participants included 20 students that were randomly assigned to either a sitting meditation or a wait list control (WLC). A weekly schedule of mindfulness practices was given to participants to complete on their own for 5 weeks. The WLC did not do any mindfulness for the first 5 weeks. Participants in the both conditions showed significant within‐group reductions in test anxiety, overall anxiety, and DASS scores during their mindfulness interventions. Both groups also showed significant increases in FFMQ scores. Mindfulness may play a role in the reduction of anxiety and test anxiety. Further research is needed to assess how mindfulness may affect anxiety and test anxiety in college students.

Abstract:Journal of Holistic Nursing, Ahead of Print. Background Burnout negatively affects nurses and increases nursing turnover. Many student nurses experience burnout throughout their academic program, negatively affecting student success and patient care. Objectives To explore effects of mindfulness education / self-care skills training in undergraduate nursing students on stress and self-care. Design A four-week pilot with four-week follow-up. Setting In-person mindfulness sessions were offered to first-year nursing students. Participants 67 students enrolled in a nursing skills course. Methods Four in-person mindfulness educational sessions were provided with a 4-week follow-up. Outcomes were stress and self-care, measured by the Perceived Stress Scale and Mindful Self-Care Scale at pre-, post-, and follow-up. Results 58 (86.6%) completed pilot; mean age = 22.8 (5.75), majority females (84%) and Caucasian (79%). Students practicing one or more mindfulness techniques at least 8 times outside class increased self-care 9.5% pre- to post-intervention (p = .01), although not sustained at follow-up. Stress did not change significantly in either direction (p = .94), potentially mediating the stress of starting clinical immediately following the intervention. Conclusions Mindfulness education increased self-care in first-year nursing students who practiced mindfulness outside class. Recommendations include further research and integration of mindfulness into courses to assess benefits and coping skills for future nurses.
Stress Reduction Through Mindfulness Meditation in Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists

Abstract:Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) experience high levels of stress related to the level of difficulty and time commitment associated with an integrated Doctor of Nursing Practice anesthesia program. Although some degree of stress is necessary for motivation, unmanaged stress can contribute to illness, dissatisfaction, and substance use. A search of the literature showed that mindfulness meditation training reduces stress and improves academic performance in graduate student populations. An evidence-based practice project was developed and implemented to provide SRNAs with a novel stress management mechanism. A guided mindfulness meditation application for smart phones (Headspace, Headspace) was chosen as the intervention modality. Research shows that this application is an effective and convenient delivery system for mindfulness meditation training, decreasing stress during a 10-day trial. SRNAs attended a mindfulness presentation and completed an introductory guided mindfulness meditation module using the Headspace application on their personal smart phone. Preintervention and postintervention surveys (N=33) using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21-item questionnaire were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results showed significant reductions (P<.01) in depression (Z=-3.36), anxiety (Z=-3.07), and stress (Z=-3.46) scores, representing reductions of 32%, 32%, and 47%.

Abstract:Undergraduate and graduate students have reported rising rates of anxiety that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly related to heightened intolerance of uncertainty. The present preregistered pilot study investigated whether psychoeducational wellness programs based on behavioral activation or mindfulness were associated with greater improvement in anxiety relative to a survey-only control condition over 8 weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moderating or mediating effects of intolerance of uncertainty were tested.

Abstract:Introduction Anxiety is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders on post-secondary campuses, often brought on by stressors unique to the college environment. Traditional psychological approaches to manage anxiety might focus on breathing techniques and progressive muscle relaxation. However, additional techniques that use specific sensory input to reduce anxiety have not received the same attention in the literature. Method This longitudinal study compared four interventions for state anxiety (deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, an adapted dive reflex, and use of a weighted lap object) in a cohort of professional occupational therapy students. Results This study found that all four interventions significantly reduced state anxiety. The sensory-based interventions of adapted dive reflex and weighted lap object appeared to have a longer duration of impact than the traditional interventions of deep breathing and PMR. Conclusion These results suggest that both traditional and sensory-based approaches may be effective in reducing anxiety before a testing situation.

Abstract:Objective The academic crisis of college students has drawn extensive attention from universities and society. Academic crisis is often related to self-control, emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships. However, college students with academic crisis often have difficulty solving these problems on their own, and thus need intervention. Methods In this study, a mindfulness-based intervention was designed and evaluated by a mixed method research of pre-post-test and content analysis. Results This study found that this intervention significantly improved participants'' level of mindfulness and self-control, and significantly reduced their level of social anxiety and general anxiety. Conclusion This study showed that it is feasible to intervene college students'' academic crisis using mindfulness-based intervention, which is worth further exploration.
Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Undergraduate Nursing Students in a University Setting: A Narrative Review

Abstract:(1) Introduction: Undergraduate (UG) nursing students are vulnerable to stress throughout their education, known to result in burnout, with high attrition rates of up to 33%. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that mindfulness-based interventions are effective for the management of anxiety, depression and wellbeing, thereby reducing stress in healthcare provider populations. The aim of this narrative review was to synthesize and provide a critical overview of the current evidence in relation to mindfulness-based interventions for UG nursing students in a university setting. (2) Methods: A review of the literature was conducted in March 2020 and updated in May 2021, utilising the databases CINAHL, Medline and PsycINFO. (3) Results: Fifteen studies were included in the review, with three common themes identified: (i) the positive impact of mindfulness on holistic wellbeing, (ii) mindfulness-based techniques as a positive coping mechanism within academic and clinical practice, and (iii) approaches to the delivery of mindfulness-based interventions. (4) Conclusions: Mindfulness-based interventions are effective strategies for the management of stress, development of self-awareness and enhanced academic and clinical performance in undergraduate nursing students. No ideal approach to delivery or duration of these interventions was evident from the literature. Best practice in relation to delivery of mindfulness-based interventions for nursing students is recommended for future studies.

Abstract:Aim: An integrative review was conducted to identify and evaluate interventions for test anxiety (TA) in undergraduate nursing students. Background: Test performance has a major impact on the academic success of nursing students. Therefore, testing is a source of stress and anxiety, which may impair academic performance. Method: A systematic search was conducted to locate peer-reviewed literature about interventions for TA in undergraduate nursing students. Results: Review of 33 publications dated 1973 to 2014 identified 19 interventions for TA in undergraduate nursing students. Findings included experimental evidence supporting aromatherapy, music therapy, and various cognitive or behavioral interventions. Nonexperimental evidence supporting collaborative testing, crib sheets, and humorous exam items was also found. Conclusion: Many interventions for mitigating TA in nursing students have been evaluated since the 1970s. Current research is needed to corroborate and strengthen the evidentiary support for existing interventions and to evaluate new interventions.

Abstract:Anxiety is a state of mind that university students often manifest in exam situations, which can negatively impact their grades. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different relaxation techniques, including guided breathing and social support, on test anxiety among nursing students a few minutes before taking the final knowledge assessment test. For this purpose, a factorial study with a post-intervention measurement was carried out with three groups of nursing students. One group used the full yogic breathing relaxation technique (abdominal, thoracic, and clavicular), another used a social support technique, and the last group did not receive any intervention. Of 119 participants, 98.2% showed a moderate-high level of anxiety. Regarding the anxiety scale score, it was found that participants with moderate anxiety levels had higher scores on the knowledge test (Rho = −0.222; p = 0.015). The present study found no differences in anxiety levels between the study groups. Combining these relaxation techniques with others shown to be effective could reinforce their positive effect. Starting to work on this anxiety from the beginning of nursing courses appears to be a good strategy, striving to improve students' confidence in their abilities.
