Abstract:Abstract The structural process of bone and periodontal ligament (PDL) remodeling during long-term orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) has not been satisfactorily described yet. Although the mechanism of bone changes in the directly affected alveolar bone has been deeply investigated, detailed knowledge about specific mechanism of PDL remodeling and its interaction with alveolar bone during OTM is missing. This work aims to provide an accurate and user-independent analysis of the alveolar bone and PDL remodeling following a prolonged OTM treatment in mice. Orthodontic forces were applied using a Ni–Ti coil-spring in a split-mouth mice model. After 5 weeks both sides of maxillae were scanned by high-resolution micro-CT. Following a precise tooth movement estimation, an extensive 3D analysis of the alveolar bone adjacent to the first molar were performed to estimate the morphological and compositional parameters. Additionally, changes of PDL were characterized by using a novel 3D model approach. Bone loss and thinning, higher connectivity as well as lower bone mineral density were found in both studied regions. Also, a non-uniformly widened PDL with increased thickness was observed. The extended and novel methodology in this study provides a comprehensive insight about the alveolar bone and PDL remodeling process after a long-duration OTM.

New methodology for evaluating osteoclastic activity induced by orthodontic load

Abstract:Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a dynamic process of bone modeling involving osteoclast-driven resorption on the compression side. Consequently, to estimate the influence of various situations on tooth movement, experimental studies need to analyze this cell. Objectives The aim of this study was to test and validate a new method for evaluating osteoclastic activity stimulated by mechanical loading based on the fractal analysis of the periodontal ligament (PDL)-bone interface. Material and Methods The mandibular right first molars of 14 rabbits were tipped mesially by a coil spring exerting a constant force of 85 cN. To evaluate the actual influence of osteoclasts on fractal dimension of bone surface, alendronate (3 mg/Kg) was injected weekly in seven of those rabbits. After 21 days, the animals were killed and their jaws were processed for histological evaluation. Osteoclast counts and fractal analysis (by the box counting method) of the PDL-bone interface were performed in histological sections of the right and left sides of the mandible. Results An increase in the number of osteoclasts and in fractal dimension after OTM only happened when alendronate was not administered. Strong correlation was found between the number of osteoclasts and fractal dimension. Conclusions Our results suggest that osteoclastic activity leads to an increase in bone surface irregularity, which can be quantified by its fractal dimension. This makes fractal analysis by the box counting method a potential tool for the assessment of osteoclastic activity on bone surfaces in microscopic examination.

Abstract:Objectives The molecular mechanisms behind orthodontic tooth movements (OTM) were investigated by clarifying the role of chemical messengers released by cells. Methods Using the Cochrane library, Google scholar, and PubMed databases, a literature search was conducted, and studies published from 1984-2024 were considered. Results Both bone growth and remodeling may occur when a tooth is subjected to mechanical stress. These chemicals have a significant effect on the stimulation and regulation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes during alveolar bone remodeling. This regulation can take place in pathological conditions, such as periodontal diseases, or during OTM alone. This comprehensive review outlines key molecular mechanisms underlying OTM and explores various clinical assumptions associated with specific molecules and their functional domains during this process. Furthermore, clinical applications of certain molecules such as relaxin, prostaglandin E (PGE), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in accelerating OTM have been reported. Our findings underscore the existing gap between OTM clinical applications and basic research investigations. Conclusion A comprehensive understanding of orthodontic treatment is enriched by insights into biological systems. We reported the activation of osteoblasts, osteoclast precursor cells, osteoclasts, and osteocytes in response to mechanical stress, leading to targeted cellular and molecular interventions and facilitating rapid and regulated alveolar bone remodeling during tooth movement. Despite the shortcomings of clinical studies in accelerating OTM, this review highlights the crucial role of biological agents in this process and advocates for prioritizing high-quality human studies in future research to gain further insights from clinical trials.
Micro-osteoperforation for enhancement of orthodontic movement: A mechanical analysis using the finite element method

Abstract:Micro-osteoperforation is a minimally invasive technique aimed at accelerating tooth movement. The goal of this novel experimental study was to assess tooth movement and stress distribution produced by the force of orthodontic movement on the tooth structure, periodontal ligament, and maxillary bone structure, with and without micro-osteoperforation, using the finite element method. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to obtain a virtual model of the maxilla and simulate the extraction of right and left first premolars. Three micro-osteoperforations (1.5 x 5 mm) were made in the hemiarch on the distal and mesial surfaces of upper canines, according to the power tip geometry of the Propel device (Propel Orthodontics, Ossining, New York, USA). An isotropic model of the maxilla was fabricated according to the finite element method by insertion of mechanical properties of the tooth structures, with orthodontic force (1.5 N) simulation in the distal movement on the upper canine of a hemiarch. Initial movement was larger when micro-osteoperforations were performed on the dental crown (24%) and on the periodontal ligament (29%). In addition, stress distribution was higher on the bone structure (31%) when micro-osteoperforations were used. Micro-osteoperforations considerably increased the movement of both the dental crown and periodontal ligament, which highlights their importance in the improvement of orthodontic movement, as well as in stress distribution across the bone structure. Important stress absorption regions were identified within micro-osteoperforations.

[68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor and Sodium [18F]Fluoride PET Can Non-Invasively Identify and Monitor the Dynamics of Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Mouse Model

Abstract:The cellular and molecular mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) are not yet fully understood, partly due to the lack of dynamical datasets within the same subject. Inflammation and calcification are two main processes during OTM. Given the high sensitivity and specificity of [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor and Sodium [18F]Fluoride (Na[18F]F) for inflammation and calcification, respectively, the aim of this study is to assess their ability to identify and monitor the dynamics of OTM in an established mouse model. To monitor the processes during OTM in real time, animals were scanned using a small animal PET/CT during week 1, 3, and 5 post-implantation, with [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor and Na[18F]F. Both tracers showed an increased uptake in the region of interest compared to the control. For [68Ga]Ga-Pentixafor, an increased uptake was observed within the 5-week trial, suggesting the continuous presence of inflammatory markers. Na[18F]F showed an increased uptake during the trial, indicating an intensification of bone remodelling. Interim and end-of-experiment histological assessments visualised increased amounts of chemokine receptor CXCR4 and TRAP-positive cells in the periodontal ligament on the compression side. This approach establishes the first in vivo model for periodontal remodelling during OTM, which efficiently detects and monitors the intricate dynamics of periodontal ligament.

Abstract:Objectives The objective of this study was to determine changes in gene expression by establishing an orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) rat model with appropriate and excessive orthodontic force. Materials and Methods Using a closed coil nickel‐titanium spring, the OTM was carried out to apply a mesial force of 50 or 100 g to the maxillary first molars. Micro‐CT, histological and immunohistochemical staining were used to evaluate the bone formation at the tension site and the bone resorption and bone formation at pressure site. Then RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis were performed. Results According to the results of the Mirco‐CT scan of OTM rat models, both the 50 g group and the 100 g group showed variable degrees of reduction in alveolar bone density on the tension and pressure sides. The results of histological and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that the periodontal tissue and osteogenic ability of the 50 g group were restored at the 14 days, while the 100 g group caused severe periodontal tissue damage. The GO and KEGG analysis results, as well as the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), varied depending on the loading time and value of appliance, according to the results of the RNA sequencing. And the immunohistochemical staining results showed that Sfrp4 functioned by efficiently influencing both bone formation and bone absorption. Conclusions Appropriate orthodontic force value could cause appropriate movement of teeth in rats without adverse periodontal damage. Simultaneously, distinct gene expression patterns were observed at various force levels and time intervals.

Abstract:The utilization of optimal orthodontic force is crucial to prevent undesirable side effects and ensure efficient tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, the sensitivity of existing detection techniques is not sufficient, and the criteria for evaluating optimal force have not been yet established. Here, by employing 3D finite element analysis methodology, we found that the apical distal region (A-D region) of mesial roots is particularly sensitive to orthodontic force in rats. Tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts began accumulating in the A-D region under the force of 40 grams (g), leading to alveolar bone resorption and tooth movement. When the force reached 80 g, TRAP-positive osteoclasts started appearing on the root surface in the A-D region. Additionally, micro-computed tomography revealed a significant root resorption at 80 g. Notably, the A-D region was identified as a major contributor to whole root resorption. It was determined that 40 g is the minimum effective force for tooth movement with minimal side effects according to the analysis of tooth movement, inclination, and hyalinization. These findings suggest that the A-D region with its changes on the root surface is an important consideration and sensitive indicator when evaluating orthodontic forces for a rat model. Collectively, our investigations into this region would aid in offering valuable implications for preventing and minimizing root resorption during patients' orthodontic treatment.

Abstract:Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) relies on efficient remodeling of alveolar bone. While a well-controlled inflammatory response is essential during OTM, the mechanism regulating inflammation is unknown. Autophagy, a conserved catabolic pathway, has been shown to protect cells from excess inflammation in disease states. We hypothesize that autophagy plays a role in regulating inflammation during OTM. Methods: A split-mouth design was used to force load molars in adult male mice, carrying a GFP-LC3 transgene for in vivo detection of autophagy. Confocal microscopy, Western blot, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses were used to evaluate autophagy activation in tissues of loaded and control molars at time points after force application. Rapamycin, a Food and Drug Administration-approved immunosuppressant, was injected to evaluate induction of autophagy. Results: Autophagy activity increases shortly after loading, primarily on the compression side of the tooth, and is closely associated with inflammatory cytokine expression and osteoclast recruitment. Daily administration of rapamycin, an autophagy activator, led to reduced tooth movement and osteoclast recruitment, suggesting that autophagy downregulates the inflammatory response and bone turnover during OTM. Conclusions: This is the first demonstration that shows that autophagy is induced by orthodontic loading and plays a role during OTM, likely via negative regulation of inflammatory response and bone turnover. Exploring roles of autophagy in OTM holds great promise, as aberrant autophagy is associated with periodontal disease and its related systemic inflammatory disorders.

Abstract:Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is the core component of orthodontic treatment and is increasingly popular for treating malocclusions. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) in OTM. Methods: Thirty patients treated with transmission straight wire technology were selected and longitudinally tracked at 2 different stages of orthodontic treatment (initial 2 months and 12 months of orthodontic treatment). Total saliva was collected and analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Western blotting was used to detect the difference in ApoE expression in the saliva samples of the 2 groups. The expression of ApoE was further verified by immunohistochemical staining in a mouse model of tooth movement. Results: The results of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of- flight mass spectrometry showed significant differences in the components of the salivary peptides in the 2 groups and peptides with a molecular weight of 2010.7 Da were predicted to be ApoE by database analysis. Western blotting further verified a significant difference in the expression of salivary ApoE in the 2 groups. In addition, an OTM model was successfully constructed in mice. The immunohistochemical staining results showed that ApoE expression significantly increased after force loading in the OTM model. Conclusions: This study indicated that ApoE participated in and played a role during OTM in patients treated with transmission straight wire technology. This relationship might be related to alveolar bone reconstruction and root resorption. The results provide new ideas for research on the mechanism of tooth movement using precision medicine based on saliva detection.

Abstract:Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of CB2 on bone regulation during orthodontic tooth movement. Methods Thirty male mice were allocated into 2 groups ( n = 15 in each group): wild type (WT) group and CB2 knockout (CB2 −/− ) group. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) was induced by applying a nickel-titanium coil spring between the maxillary first molar and the central incisors. There are three subgroups within the WT groups (0, 7 and 14 days) and the CB2 −/− groups (0, 7 and 14 days). 0-day groups without force application. Tooth displacement, alveolar bone mass and alveolar bone volume were assessed by micro-CT on 0, 7 and 14 days, and the number of osteoclasts was quantified by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Moreover, the expression levels of RANKL and OPG in the compression area were measured histomorphometrically. Results The WT group exhibited the typical pattern of OTM, characterized by narrowed periodontal space and bone resorption on the compression area. In contrast, the accelerated tooth displacement, increased osteoclast number ( P < 0.0001) and bone resorption on the compression area in CB2 −/− group. Additionally, the expression of RANKL was significantly upregulated, while OPG showed low levels in the compression area of the CB2 − / − group ( P < 0.0001). Conclusions CB2 modulated OTM and bone remodeling through regulating osteoclast activity and RANKL/OPG balance.

Abstract:Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a process depending on the remodeling of periodontal tissues surrounding the roots. Orthodontic forces trigger the conversion of mechanical stimuli into intercellular chemical signals within periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, activating alveolar bone remodeling, and thereby, initiating OTM. Recently, the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 has been found to play pivotal roles in the different types of human cells by transforming external physical stimuli into intercellular chemical signals. However, the function of Piezo1 during the mechanotransduction process of PDL cells has rarely been reported. Herein, we established a rat OTM model to study the potential role of Piezo1 during the mechanotransduction process of PDL cells and investigate its effects on the tension side of alveolar bone remodeling. A total of 60 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into three groups: the OTM + inhibitor (INH) group, the OTM group, and the control (CON) group. Nickel-titanium orthodontic springs were applied to trigger tooth movement. Mice were sacrificed on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 after orthodontic movement for the radiographic, histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular biological analyses. Our results revealed that the Piezo1 channel was activated by orthodontic force and mainly expressed in the PDL cells during the whole tooth movement period. The activation of the Piezo1 channel was essential for maintaining the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and facilitation of new alveolar bone formation on the tension side. Reduced osteogenesis-associated transcription factors such as Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Osterix (OSX), and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) ratio were examined when the function of Piezo1 was inhibited. In summary, Piezo1 plays a critical role in mediating both the osteogenesis and osteoclastic activities on the tension side during OTM.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dynamic changes in the periodontal microstructure and the molar displacement pattern during orthodontic tooth movement in ovariectomized rats.METHODS:Twenty ovariectomized rats received either 100 or 30 g of orthodontic force to induce mesial movement of the maxillary left first molars over 14 days. Ten healthy rats underwent sham operations as controls. Periodontal ligament thickness, alveolar bone microstructural properties, and displacement of the molar were measured with 6 in-vivo microcomputed tomography scans for each sample.RESULTS:The ovariectomized rats that received 100 g of orthodontic force had obvious changes in periodontal ligament thickness at day 1 and poor periodontal ligament thickness recovery from days 5 through 14. The bone volume fraction increased and the trabecular separation decreased significantly in this group at day 3, and obvious bone loss was observed at day 14. Molar linear and angular movements were also higher in this group than in the other 2 groups.CONCLUSIONS:Relatively heavier force applications in ovariectomized rats resulted in poor periodontal ligament thickness recovery and local alveolar bone overcompression, and consequently induced undermining resorption and obvious alveolar bone loss; these led to high rates of tooth movement and molar inclination.

Abstract:One of the most striking features of contemporary EU governance is the ubiquity of Commission and member-state committees known under the rubric of "comitology." The significance of these committees, however, remains a matter of dispute, with two distinct theoretical images of comitology being put forward in the literature. The first of these approaches, drawn from sociological institutionalism and constructivism, suggests that EU committees provide a forum in which national and supranational experts meet and deliberate in a search for the most efficient solutions to common policy problems. A second view, derived from rational choice theory, depicts comitology committees as control mechanisms designed by EU member governments to supervise the Commission in its executive duties. This article engages in a direct competitive test of these two approaches, examining the empirical record of institutional choice of comitology committees and demonstrating that the weight of both quantitative and qualitative evidence supports rationalist hypotheses. Deliberation may well take place under certain conditions within comitology committees, but it is likely that such deliberation takes place only within a relatively narrow domain, and under conditions yet to be identified.
Micro-Osteoperforations Accelerate Tooth Movement without Exacerbating the Progression of Root Resorption in Rats

Abstract:A recent study reported that micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) accelerated tooth movement by activating alveolar bone remodeling. However, very little is known about the relationship between MOPs and external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism through which MOPs accelerate tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption, we measured the volume of the resorbed root, and performed the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method on exposed MOPs during experimental tooth movements in rats. Male Wistar rats (11 weeks old) were divided into three groups: 10 g orthodontic force (optimal force) applied to the maxillary first molar (optimal force: OF group), 50 g orthodontic force application (heavy force: HF group), and 10 g force application plus three small perforations of the cortical plate (OF + MOPs group). On days 1, 4, 7, 10, and 14 after force application, the tooth movement and root volume were investigated by micro-computed tomography. Furthermore, the number of apoptotic cells in the pressured sides of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and surrounding hard tissues were determined by TUNEL staining. The OF + MOPs group exhibited a 1.8-fold increase in tooth movement on days 7, 10, and 14 compared with the OF group. On days 14, the HF group had a higher volume of root loss than the OF and OF + MOPs groups. On the same day, the number of TUNEL-positive cells in the HF group increased at the root (cementum) site whereas that in the OF group increased at the alveolar bone site. Furthermore, the number of TUNEL-positive cells in the OF + MOPs group increased at the alveolar bone site compared with the OF group. These results suggest that MOPs accelerate orthodontic tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption.

Abstract:Orthodontic treatment utilizes the remodeling of the alveolar bone in response to externally applied orthodontic force to a tooth. The rate of bone resorption is, therefore, one of the essential factors for understanding tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. There is the basic concept of differential force in orthodontics that an optimal force moves the canine without the movement of the molar, which is used for an anchor of the canine retraction. In this paper, the resorption rates of the alveolar bone around the molar and the canine were estimated from the clinical measurements of tooth movement and the stress analyses of tooth roots using a 3-D finite element model. The model consisted of an orthodontic spring, the canine, the second premolar, and the first and second molars. The bone resorption rate to unit stress at the molar was found to be about 0.5μm/(kPa·day) and almost the same as that of the canine. This result suggests that the concept of differential force can be described only by the difference in geometry of the roots of moved and fixed teeth.
The Role of Bone and Root Resorption on the Biomechanical Behavior of Mandibular Anterior Teeth Subjected to Orthodontic Forces: A Finite Element Approach

Abstract:Aims: This study was conducted to systematically evaluate the biomechanical impact of varying degrees of root and bone resorption resulting from periodontitis and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on the mandibular anterior teeth. The objective was to determine whether these distinct resorption patterns exert a specific influence on tooth displacement and strain patterns. Methods: A finite element (FE) model of an idealized anterior mandible from the first premolar in the third to the fourth quadrant was developed without bone or root resorption and a constant periodontal ligament (PDL) thickness of 0.2 mm. Variations included three root resorption levels (0%, 20%, 50%) and three bone resorption types (circular 50%, circular 80%, vestibular 80%). Models ranged from 200,000 to 440,000 elements and 55,000 to 130,000 nodes. Orthodontic forces, namely root torque (5 Nmm), intrusion (0.2 N), and distalization (0.5 N) were applied for subsequent crown displacement and PDL strain analysis. Results: A total of 180 simulations were performed. Simulations showed that displacement was similar across different bone resorption conditions, irrespective of modeled root resorptions. Circumferential bone resorption increased tooth displacement, regardless of root resorption status. Vestibular bone resorption exhibited less increase in tooth displacement. However, when accompanied by root resorption, the combination exacerbated tooth displacement. Strains in the PDL clearly increased with a circumferential bone resorption of 80%. Conclusions: This study highlights the critical role of bone resorption in tooth displacement during OTM, particularly the challenges associated with circumferential resorption. Clinicians must consider both bone and root resorption for personalized medicine treatment of patients with severe periodontitis, in favor of low-force application strategies to optimize outcomes and minimize complications linked to excessive tooth displacement.

Stress Distribution and Collagen Remodeling of Periodontal Ligament During Orthodontic Tooth Movement

Abstract:Periodontal ligament (PDL), as a mechanical connection between the alveolar bone and tooth, plays a pivotal role in force-induced orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). However, how mechanical force controls remodeling of PDL collagenous extracellular matrix (ECM) is largely unknown. Here, we aimed to evaluate the stress distribution and ECM fiber remodeling of PDL during the process of OTM. An experimental tooth movement model was built by ligating a coil spring between the left maxillary first molar and the central incisors. After activating the coil spring for 7 days, the distance of tooth movement was 0.324 ± 0.021 mm. The 3D finite element modeling showed that the PDL stress obviously concentrated at cervical margin of five roots and apical area of the mesial root, and the compression region was distributed at whole apical root and cervical margin of the medial side (normal stress < −0.05 MPa). After force induction, the ECM fibers were disordered and immature collagen III fibers significantly increased, especially in the apical region, which corresponds to the stress concentration and compression area. Furthermore, the osteoclasts and interleukin-1β expression were dramatically increased in the apical region of the force group. Taken together, orthodontic loading could change the stress distribution of PDL and induce a disordered arrangement and remodeling of ECM fibers. These findings provide orthodontists both mechanical and biological evidences that root resorption is prone to occur in the apical area during the process of OTM.

Enhancement of Orthodontic Tooth Movement by Local Administration of Biofunctional Molecules: A Comprehensive Systematic Review

Abstract:Enhancement of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) through local administration of biofunctional molecules has become increasingly significant, particularly for adult patients seeking esthetic and functional improvements. This comprehensive systematic review analyzes the efficacy of various biofunctional molecules in modulating OTM, focusing on the method of administration and its feasibility, especially considering the potential for topical application. A search across multiple databases yielded 36 original articles of experimental human and animal OTM models, which examined biofunctional molecules capable of interfering with the biochemical reactions that cause tooth movement during orthodontic therapy, accelerating the OTM rate through their influence on bone metabolism (Calcitriol, Prostaglandins, Recombinant human Relaxin, RANKL and RANKL expression plasmid, growth factors, PTH, osteocalcin, vitamin C and E, biocompatible reduced graphene oxide, exogenous thyroxine, sclerostin protein, a specific EP4 agonist (ONO-AE1-329), carrageenan, and herbal extracts). The results indicated a variable efficacy in accelerating OTM, with Calcitriol, Prostaglandins (PGE1 and PGE2), RANKL, growth factors, and PTH, among others, showing promising outcomes. PGE1, PGE2, and Calcitriol experiments had statistically significant outcomes in both human and animal studies and, while other molecules underwent only animal testing, they could be validated in the future for human use. Notably, only one of the animal studies explored topical administration, which also suggests a future research direction. This review concluded that while certain biofunctional molecules demonstrated potential for OTM enhancement, the evidence is not definitive. The development of suitable topical formulations for human use could offer a patient-friendly alternative to injections, emphasizing comfort and cost-effectiveness. Future research should focus on overcoming current methodological limitations and advancing translational research to confirm these biomolecules' efficacy and safety in clinical orthodontic practice.

Using Micro-Computed Tomography to Evaluate the Dynamics of Orthodontically Induced Root Resorption Repair in a Rat Model.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To observe dynamic changes in root resorption repair, tooth movement relapse and alveolar bone microstructure following the application of orthodontic force.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Forces of 20 g, 50 g or 100 g were delivered to the left maxillary first molars of fifteen 10-week-old rats for 14 days. Each rat was subjected to micro-computed tomography scanning at 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 28 and 42 days after force removal. The root resorption crater volume, tooth movement relapse and alveolar bone microarchitecture were measured at each time point.RESULTS:From day 3 to day 14, the root resorption volume decreased significantly in each group. In the 20-g force group, the root resorption volume gradually stabilized after 14 days, whereas in the 50-g and 100-g force groups, it stabilized after 28 days. In all groups, tooth movement relapsed significantly from day 0 to day 14 and then remained stable. From day 3 to day 10, the 20-g group exhibited faster relapse than the 50-g and 100-g groups. In all groups, the structure model index and trabecular separation decreased slowly from day 0 to day 10 and eventually stabilized. Trabecular number increased slowly from day 0 to day 7 and then stabilized.CONCLUSIONS:The initial stage of root resorption repair did not change significantly and was followed by a dramatic repair period before stabilizing. The most serious tooth movement relapse occurred immediately after the appliance was removed, and then the tooth completely returned to the original position.
