Abstract:Background: The knowledge and importance of blood groups emerged from transfusion medicine and its relation with certain malignancies has been proven. Its importance in forensic medicine was brought to light when its association was found with the distribution of finger patterns. Thus, few studies exist proving the relationship between dactyloscopy and blood groups. Cheiloscopy on other hand is the study of the irregularities present on the lips forming a unique arrangement called the prints of the lip.Aim: Our paper aims at elucidating any unique combination if any that exists between prints on lips, prints of fingers, and blood grouping in a specific population, which might help in the identification of an individual.Materials and Methods: A total of 100 subjects of age varying from 15 to 40 years were included in the study. Subjects comprised of 50 males and 50 females. All the subjects were examined and their prints of lips along with prints of their fingers were taken. Blood groups were determined for each patient using the ABO system.Results: Type I was found to be the predominant pattern of lips and whorl arrangement was the most recorded type of fingerprint in males whereas Type II arrangement along with loop prints of fingers was most observed in the case of females. The most common blood group in males was B+ and in females was O+ . Correlation between three parameters was obtained by Pearson correlation statistical analysis.Conclusion: The prints of the lips and fingers of an individual have never been similar and they tend to remain the same from a person's birth until his death. An association between the three things of an individual that is prints of lips, fingers, and his blood group has been tried to be elucidated through the present research to aid in forensic identification.
To Evaluate the Correlation between the ABO Blood Group, Lip, and Fingerprint Pattern

Abstract:This research set out to see whether there was a connection between the ABO blood type and the unique patterns found on people's lips and fingerprints.As many as a hundred people were surveyed for this study. Red lip gloss, cellophane tape, white A3 paper, a stamp pad with blue ink, and a magnifying glass were also used.O+ blood type, a full vertical lip print, and a loopy fingerprint pattern were the most common types of individuals.Lip patterns, fingerprints, and blood types are just a few of the personally identifiable characteristics that have been shown to be useful in forensic identification. We found no evidence of a link between these three variables in our analysis.

Abstract:Background: Forensic odontology plays an important role in mass disasters, house fires, criminal deaths, identification of missing persons, and child abuse cases. Teeth are the most stable part of the human body and are resistant to thermal, mechanical, and chemical insults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mandibular intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of mandibular first molar in gender determination. Materials and methods: The study comprised 100 participants (50 males and 50 females) in the age group of 18-23 years. The mandibular impressions were made, and casts were prepared using dental stone. The intercanine distance and mesiodistal width of the right mandibular first molar were measured using digital vernier callipers. The data obtained was statistically analysed using SPSS software version 23. Results: The mean mandibular intercanine distance was found to be 27.2 ± 2.3 in males and 25.94 ± 1.76 in females (P = 0.03). There was no statistical difference in the mesiodistal width of the mandibular molar between males and females (P = 0.166). However, the mean mesiodistal width of males was higher when compared to females. Conclusion: Males have a greater intercanine width and mesiodistal dimension when compared to females. This result will be helpful in forensic medicine, anthropology, orthodontic treatments, and clinical dentistry.
Analysis of Gender Dimorphism and Assessment of Racial Variation Through Odontometric Technique: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: When conducting a forensic investigation, one of the most important steps is establishing the biological profile of a victim who cannot be positively recognized or is just a skeleton. It has been shown that, among the other clinical indicators, the diameters of dental crowns are a good and dependable source for determining gender in a particular population sample. However, the literature is sparse regarding their assessment as a viable marker for the determination of a particular race. In addition, the need for population-specific data has also been advocated while determining gender dimorphism based on tooth size. Aim and objectives: To study the bisexual variation in the permanent dentition of individuals from three different sets of populations: Arabian, South Asian, and East Asian. The other objective is to explore the role of this odontometric analysis in predicting the racial identity of the subjects belonging to the aforementioned population. Methodology: The research was conducted at the College of Dentistry, AlJouf University in Sakaka. Measurements of mesiodistal and buccolingual (BL) distances were taken using a digital vernier caliper on a total of 75 pairs of research models or casts. Statistical tests were run on the information gathered. Results: Of the 75 casts, 38 (50.7%) were of male and 37 (49.3%) were of female. Our analysis showed between genders, a significant difference in maxillary central incisor (P = 0.001), first premolar (P = 0.01), and first molar (P = 0.02) while for a mandibular arch, a significant difference was noted for incisors (P = 0.002) with greater tooth dimension in male than in the female. Concerning the BL dimensions, only the mandibular canine showed a significant difference between males and females (P = 0.001). Comparisons of the crown dimensions between population groups showed that the Arabian population consistently exhibits larger tooth dimensions than the other two populations in both arches. Conclusion: A few crown dimensions can be used as an adjunctive tool for the identification of the gender and race of an individual.
Identification, forensic evidences and effect of the most used lip cosmetics on the human STR profiling at Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:This study aimed to identify the DNA STR profiles that were obtained from the lips with various lip cosmetics involved in lip pencil, lipsticks and lip gloss for a brand - Makeup Forever and lip balms (Labello brand) - have been popularly used by Saudi women at KSA. The study was involved 35 unrelated participants (healthy female donors) aged between 26 and 32. The swabbing of lip cosmetics was done prior to using them as negative control samples, other sterilized swabs were collected from the used lip cosmetics which contained the lip cells for each participant as a study sample. Moreover, the buccal swabs were firmly collected from the cleaned oral cavities for the same donors as reference samples. The air-drying of the collected swabs was done for ten minutes at room temperature and then stored them at - 20 °C before the DNA analysis. The 7500 Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) was quantified the extracted DNA. The amplification of 16 STR loci was done using the AmpFlSTR® Identifiler® PCR amplification kit using the Thermocycler ABI 9700 to amplify the extracted DNA. The Applied Bio-systems 3130™ Genetic Analyzer with Gene Mapper® ID-X Software v3.5 was used to analyze the PCR products. The data for quantifying DNA recorded significant decrease in the concentrations of DNA samples ranged from 0.15 to 0.55 ng/µL in comparison to the reference samples, while DNA was not detected in all the negative control samples. Some STR loci showed considerably high inhibition and low heterozygosity loss in the study samples compared to the reference and negative samples. The possibility of extracting DNA samples from lip cosmetics were used in the present study could be useful and successful in some cases due to the effect of the chemical compositions such as heavy pigments, organic components, and aromatic wax on the STR profiles in the lip cosmetics, especially in the lipsticks, lip glosses and lip pencils.

Abstract:A new and versatile method for linking biologically active ligands to a polyacrylamide matrix is reported. Active esters of acrylic acid (N-succinimicyl acrylate and N-phthalimidyl acrylate) were synthesized, then copolymerized with acrylamide and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. Displacement of the active ester in the gel thus formed by various ligands containing aliphatic amino groups resulted in the formation of stable amid bonds between the ligands and the polyacrylamide gel. The affinity gel thus prepared has the following advantages: (i) resistance to chemical and microbiological degradation, (ii) ease of control of ligand level and higher levels of ligand possible, (iii) ease of control of porosity, and (iv) total displacement of the active ester under suitable conditions. Efficacy of this system was tested by preparation of 6-aminohexyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside derivative polyacrylamide gel by the described method. It was found to be more effective for purification of wheat germ agglutinin than the previously published affinity chromatography systems and the wheat germ hemagglutinin was obtained in crystalline form. In addition, partial resolution of isolectins was obtained from the affinity gel witha pH gradient.
Experience with a New Implantable Pacer‐, Cardioverter‐Defibrillator for the Therapy of Recurrent Sustained Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias: A Step Toward a Universal Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia Control Device

Abstract:Ten consecutive patients (mean age 57.9 ± 7.6 years) were treated with an investigational tachyarrhythmia control device, the implantable Medtronic Pacer‐, Cardioverter‐, Defibrillator model 7216A or 72170. All patients had coronary artery disease with old myocardial infarctions and presented hemodynamically significant sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias not suppressed by antiarrhythmic drug therapy and unrelated to acute myocardial infarction. In two patients a nonthoracotomy lead system was implanted. Lowest effective defibrillation energy ranged from 5 to 18 joules (mean 12.2 ± 4 joules) for the epicardial bielectrode systems and were 15 and 18 joules for the nonfhoracotomy lead system implants. The postoperative periods were unremarkable. Follow‐up ranged from 7 to 19 months (mean 13.8 ± 4.5 months). Spontaneous tachyarrhythmia episodes were detected and treated by the device in six patients, five of them received staged therapies. No deaths occurred and no hospital admissions were necessary for device related or ventricular tachyarrhythmia related complications. In conclusion, this integrated device represents a major step toward the development of a universal ventricular arrhythmia control device.
Morphological Variation of Lip Patterns among Nepali Adults

Abstract:Background Lip patterns are normal lines and fissures in the form of wrinkles and grooves present in the zone of transition of the human lip between the inner labial mucosa and the outer skin. Lip patterns are said to be unchangeable and unique. Objective To determine predominant lip patterns found among the Nepali population and to evaluate whether any sex difference exists. Method This study included 411 healthy adult Nepali comprising 215 males and 196 females in the age group of 18-27 years. The data was collected using an automated mode Canon EOS 3000D 18MP camera with an 18-55 mm lens. Lip patterns were then divided into four quadrants using Suzuki and Tsuchihashi's classification system. Result Lip pattern Type I (29.56%) was found to be the most common lip pattern in the study population. Sex-wise, Type I was the most common pattern with a prevalence of 28.72% in males and 30.48% in females. Applying the Chi-square test, a statistically significant difference (p 0.05) was not achieved in all the quadrants. Conclusion There is a marked variation observed between the findings of the present study when compared to previous Nepali studies. Being insignificant to sex differences, lip patterns should not be used as a useful resource in forensic casework for sex discrimination.
Enhancing Aesthetic Harmony: Comprehensive Anthropometric Lip Measurements in Youthful and Attractive Indonesian Adults for Precision Cosmetic Procedures

Abstract:Lips are an important part of our perception of beauty, youthfulness and attractiveness. Aesthetic lips, as with the rest of the face, differs according to age, ethnicity and sex. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anthropometric measurements of the lips of young and attractive Indonesian adults. Photographs of faces were taken at an anterior neutral position for 100 participants; 47 men and 53 women volunteered to participate in this study. Seven landmarks were used in this study: stomion (st), sublabiale (sl), subnasale (sn), labiale superius (ls), labiale inferius (li), crista philtre (cp) and chelion (ch). Using these landmarks, lower lip height, upper lip height, philtrum length, upper vermillion height, lower vermillion height, cutaneous lower lip height, philtrum width and mouth width were measured. The results were analysed using independent t-test and Mann-Whitney test. Significant differences in lip size were observed between men and women in all the measurements st-sl (lower lip height), sn-st (upper lip height), sn-ls (philtrum length), li-sl (cutaneous lower lip height), sn-ls/ls-st (philtrum length and upper vermillion height) and ls-li/ch-ch (cutaneous lower lip height and mouth width) with a significance of p=0.003, p=0.007, p<0.001, p=0.05, p=0.005 and p=0.021, respectively. Male lip measurements of ch-ch (overall lip width) and ls-st/li-st (overall lower lip height) were significantly smaller than those of female lips. The lip ratios calculated in this study were congruent with aesthetic parameters reported in other populations. This study suggests that the same measurement standards cannot be used on different populations, but these ratios may offer a better framework for precision cosmetic procedures. We believe that the results obtained in this study on lip anthropometry will help in optimising the standard values that can be used for the Indonesian population aged 20 to 35 years.
Forensic importance of maxillary sinus in gender determination: A morphometric analysis from Western Uttar Pradesh, India

Abstract:Abstract Background: The study of anthropometric characteristics is of fundamental importance to solve problems related to identification. Craniometrical features are included among these characteristics, which are closely connected to forensic dentistry. Radiography is used in forensic for the identification of humans especially in cases where the body is decomposed, fragmented, or burned. Radiology can assist in giving accurate dimensions for which certain formulae can be applied to determine the gender. It has been reported that maxillary sinuses remain intact, although the skull and other bones may be badly disfigured in victims who are incinerated and therefore, that maxillary sinuses can be used for identification. Aim: This study has been carried out to check the accuracy and reliability of maxillary sinus in gender determination using morphometric parameters. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalogram of 50 subjects (25 males and 25 females) were taken and morphometric parameters of maxillary sinus were analyzed using AutoCAD 2010 software (Autodesk, Inc.). Results: The mean area and perimeter of maxillary sinus in males was 1.7261 cm2 and 5.2885 cm whereas, the mean area and perimeter in females was 1.3424 cm2 and 4.3901 cm. In-group centroids if someone′s discriminant function (DF) score is close to 0.838 then the subject are supposed to be male. Whereas, those having DF score closer to −0.838 are supposed to be females. DF analysis showed that, 76% of the original grouped cases were correctly classified. Hence, the overall sensitivity and specificity was found to be 80% and 72%. Conclusion: It can be concluded that morphometric analysis (area and perimeter) of maxillary sinus using AutoCAD 2010 software can assist in gender determination.
Cephalometric Analysis of Maxillary Sinus for Gender Determination Using Lateral Cephalogram: A Novel Retrospective Study in the North Indian Population

Abstract:Background: Underlying disorders of the maxillary sinus (MS), including a history of sinus surgeries, chronic sinusitis, or congenital anomalies can potentially impact sinus function and structure, necessitating careful evaluation and management. Moreover, intact sinuses are crucial in gender determination in forensic anthropology. The present study was undertaken to check the accuracy and reliability of MS in gender determination using morphometric parameters. Materials and methods: This retrospective study was carried out on 74 lateral cephalograms (37 males and 37 females) aged between 18 to 50 years from the North Indian population. The MS area was measured using a NewTom CBCT machine (NewTom, Imola, Italy) with slicer software. The anatomical landmarks for the sinus were identified, and the area was calculated in square millimeters (mm2). Results: In terms of surface area, females had a mean of 13,210.40 mm2 with a standard error of 713.46. Males, however, exhibited a higher mean surface area of 18,713.82 mm2, but with a significantly larger standard error of 3,371.70. The difference in MS area between males and females was statistically significant (p<0.01). In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.77, suggesting good discriminative ability. Conclusion: The MS area on lateral cephalograms shows significant sexual dimorphism. Overall, the findings suggest that the MS surface area can be a useful anatomical feature for distinguishing between male and female North Indian subjects, given the statistically significant difference and the good discriminative performance indicated by the ROC curve analysis.

Abstract:Lips are the main part of the lower facial soft tissue and are vital to forensic facial approximation (FFA). Facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) and linear measurements in three dimensions are used in the quantitative analysis of lip morphology. With most FSTT analysis methods, the surface of soft tissue is unexplicit. Our study aimed to determine FSTT and explore the relationship between the hard and soft tissues of lips in different skeletal occlusions based on cone-beam CT (CBCT) and 3dMD images in a Chinese population. The FSTT of 11 landmarks in CBCT and 29 lip measurements in CBCT and 3dMD of 180 healthy Chinese individuals (90 males, 90 females) between 18 and 30 years were analyzed. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups with different skeletal occlusions distributed equally: 156 subjects in the experimental group to establish the prediction regression formulae of lip morphology and 24 subjects in the test group to assess the accuracy of the formulae. The results indicated that FSTT in the lower lip region varied among different skeletal occlusions. Furthermore, sex discrepancy was noted in the FSTT in midline landmarks and linear measurements. Measurements showing the highest correlation between soft and hard tissues were between total upper lip height and Ns-Pr (0.563 in males, 0.651 in females). The stepwise multiple regression equations were verified to be reliable with an average error of 1.246 mm. The method of combining CBCT with 3dMD provides a new perspective in predicting lip morphology and expands the database for FFA.

Abstract:Background. With the changing paradigm from primarily hard tissue to soft tissue evaluation for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, the priority has shifted to bring about improvement in the profile and smile characteristics of patients. Since not only the esthetics but also the stability of orthodontic treatment is largely determined by the soft tissue envelope, proper positioning of the soft tissue drape becomes paramount. Soft tissues of face, namely, nose, lips, and chin, are of paramount importance not only from an esthetic but also from functional and treatment stability points. Objective. To determine the morphological variation of lips, nose, and chin in different skeletal malocclusions. Materials and Methods. Lateral cephalograms of 237 patients visiting the department of orthodontics, BPKIHS, were taken, hand traced on matt acetate tracing paper of 0.002′′ thickness with 0.3-mm 2B pencil. Samples were divided into 3 skeletal classes based on ANB angle. Measurements were made in relation to the nose, lips, and chin. Data were inserted in to SPSS and analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics, and mean and standard deviation was calculated for each variable. Multiple comparison between groups was done with post hoc Bonferroni test with mean difference significant at p < 0.05 . Result. On intergroup comparison, a significant difference was found for upper lip thickness (ULT) between Class II and Class III, and lower lip length (LLL) between Class I and Class III, and between Class II and Class III. Significant difference for nasolabial angle (NLA) was found between Class II and Class III. Similarly, a significant difference for the vertical chin parameter (CTV) was found between Class I and Class III, and between Class II and Class III. Conclusion. Both upper and lower lip thicknesses were highest for Class III followed by Class I and Class II, respectively. Lip lengths too were found to be highest for Class III skeletal relation. Nasolabial angle was larger in Class II malocclusion when compared to Class I and Class III. Similarly, both nasal length and nasal height measurements were in the order of Class III > Class II > Class I. Both horizontal and vertical chin parameters were larger for Class III sagittal relation.
Heredity and Forensic Implications of Lip Prints among Indian Twins and Non-Twin Siblings: A Cheiloscopy Study

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to assess the lip prints of Indian twins and non-twin siblings to evaluate the existence of heredity in the lip prints of these individuals. Materials and methods: The study employed a blind, cross-sectional, quantitative approach with an inductive method and extensive direct observation. The sample consisted of 30 twins and 30 non-twin siblings, divided into three groups based on gender with 10 subjects in each subgroup. All participants were aged between 10 and 30 years and were instructed on the methods and techniques involved in the study. Results: The lip prints of participants were recorded using dark-colored lipstick, bond paper, cellophane tape, and a brush, and were examined for lip thickness measurement (in mm), classification of lip commissures, and assessment of groove patterns. The findings were then analyzed to determine the pattern of lip prints among twins and non-twin siblings. Conclusion: Cheiloscopy, the forensic investigation technique based on lip trace identification, could benefit from this study's findings as it explores the existence of heredity in lip prints of Indian twins and non-twin siblings.

Abstract:Background: Soft tissue analysis can be used to assess anatomical features but may or may not accurately correlate with underlying hard tissue morphology, leading to an incorrect perception of malocclusion. Objective: This study aimed to assess the reliability of different soft tissue reference lines used to evaluate anteroposterior lip position and the position of incisors and malocclusion and compare it with those assessed via hard tissue angles (LSMx and LIMd) and determine if they are true indicators of underlying protrusion of incisors and malocclusion. Method: A total of 120 pre-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs were selected where patients were 18-30 years old, diagnosed as Skeletal Class I, II (Division 1 and 2), and III malocclusion. The measurements taken were SN to point A angle (SNA), SN to point B angle (SNB), angle between point A and point B (ANB), upper incisor to SN plane angle (UI-SN), upper incisor to palatal plane angle (UI-PP), incisor mandibular plane angle (IMPA), Ricketts' E line, Sushner's S2 line, nasolabial (NL) angle, mentolabial (ML) angle, LSMx angle, and LIMd angle. Results: In the Class I malocclusion group, when the upper lip was assessed, the distribution of UI-SN, UI-PP, E line to UL, S line to UL, NL angle, and LMax was significantly different statistically (p=0.000), though the assessment of lower variables in Class I malocclusion showed the distribution of IMPA, E line to UL, S line to UL, ML angle, and LMand angle has a statistically significant difference (p=0.007). In Class II Division 2 malocclusion, a significant difference was observed for the upper variables (p=0.000), whereas the distribution of lower values was the same across all the variables (p=0.0724). In the sample of Class III malocclusion, a significant correlation was found in the upper variables, while the distribution among lower variables did not show any significant difference (p=0.211). Conclusion: This study indicates that the upper and lower soft tissue correlation with hard tissue variables is reliable for some variables but not throughout for all. Soft tissue analysis (under study) can be used to assess disproportion, but it fails to correlate to the underlying hard tissue morphology and does not explain the correct malocclusion. Further studies based on 3D diagnosis to formulate a close relationship are encouraged that can help assess soft and hard tissue patterns consistent with one another.

Abstract:Identification of human remains following crimes, accidents, natural disasters and war falls under the purview of forensic medicine. In situations like this, human identification is crucial in helping the police and legal system, providing comfort to impacted parties, and looking into the nature of the disaster or accident and those involved. [ 1–3 ] The first step in human identification, popularly referred to by forensic anthropologists as the "big 4," is identifying the age, gender, race, and stature. [ 4 ] Forensic analysis including analysis of palatal ridge pattern, dermatoglyphic patterns, cheiloscopy have been adequately documented.

[Acute encephalitis: study of a childhood case load].

Abstract:Twenty patients with viral encephalitis were studied retrospectively. Among these, in 2 cases, it was possible to formulate the diagnosis of encephalitis with viral replication by herpes virus on the basis of finding of cerebrospinal fluid IgM, serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid specific antibody rate movement and TC-scan necrotic lesions in typical sites. In 18 of 20 patients it was formulated the generic diagnosis of encephalitis without evidence of viral replication. Among these last 18 patients, 7 were considered affected by post-infective encephalitis on the basis of the anamnestic finding of the causing disease within 30 days from the appearance of the first symptoms. Into the 11 other the etiology was anamnestically hidden. The outcome was essentially favourable in the considered cases (16/20 complete recoveries). Poor outcome factors were considered the presence of herpetic infection and TC-scan alterations into the group of encephalitis without evidence of viral replication in association of anamnestic finding of measles.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Sex determination can be done by morphological analysis of different parts of the body. The mastoid region, with its anatomical location at the skull base, is ideal for sex identification. Statistical shape analysis provides a simultaneous comparison of geometric information on different shapes in terms of size and shape features. This study aimed to investigate the geometric morphometry of the inter-mastoid triangle as a tool for sex determination in the Iranian population.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The coordinates of 5 landmarks on the mastoid process on the 80 cone-beam computed tomographic images (from individuals aged 17-70 years, 52.5% female) were registered and digitalized. The Cartesian x-y coordinates were acquired for all landmarks, and the shape information was extracted from the principal component scores of generalized Procrustes fit. The t-test was used to compare centroid size. Cross-validated discriminant analysis was used for sex determination. The significance level for all tests was set at 0.05.RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the mastoid size and shape between males and females (P<0.05). The first 2 components of the Procrustes shape coordinates explained 91.3% of the shape variation between the sexes. The accuracy of the discriminant model for sex determination was 88.8%.CONCLUSION: The application of morphometric geometric techniques will significantly impact forensic studies by providing a comprehensive analysis of differences in biological forms. The results demonstrated that statistical shape analysis can be used as a powerful tool for sex determination based on a morphometric analysis of the inter-mastoid triangle.
