Abstract:Purpose Adsorption and desorption are important processes that influence the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of atrazine in soils. Equilibrium batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption–desorption characteristics of atrazine. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine and quantify the main soil parameters governing atrazine adsorption and desorption phenomena; (2) find the correlativity between the identified soil parameters; and (3) investigate the universal desorption hysteresis traits. Materials and methods Fifteen soils with contrasting physico-chemical characteristics were collected from 11 provinces in eastern China. The equilibrium time was 24 h both for adsorption and desorption experiments. Atrazine was detected by Waters 2695/UV HPLC. Results and discussion Adsorption isotherms of atrazine could be well described by the Freundlich equation ( r ≥ 0.994, p < 0.01). The total organic carbon (TOC) was the first independent variable that described 53.0 % of the total variability of K f , followed by the pH (9.9 %), and the clay (4.0 %) and silt (1.2 %) contents, separately; while the primary soil properties that affect desorption parameters included the TOC, pH, free Fe 2 O 3 (Fe d ) and the sand content, with the biggest contribution achieved by the TOC (ranged from 48.5–78.1 %). The results showed that when the content ratio of clay to TOC (RCO) was less than 40, the atrazine adsorption was largely influenced by the organic matrix, while when the RCO was greater than 40, they were vital affected by the clay content. Conclusions Adsorption–desorption isotherms of atrazine in soils were nonlinear. The content of TOC, clay, and iron oxides, as well as the pH value were the key soil parameters affecting the adsorption–desorption of atrazine in soil, among which the RCO especially exhibited relevance. Additionally, the desorption hysteresis existed for atrazine retention in all 15 tested soils, and the hysteretic effect enhanced with the increasing time for desorption. This would be ascribed to the heterogeneity physical–chemical properties of these soils.
Impact of Soil Primary Size Fractions on Sorption and Desorption of Atrazine on Organo-Mineral Fractions

Abstract:In the current study, a mechanical dispersion method was employed to separate clay (<2 μm), silt (2–20 μm), and sand (20–50 μm) fraction in six bulk soils. Batch equilibrium method was used to conduct atrazine sorption and desorption experiments on soil organo-mineral fractions with bulk soils and their contrasting size fractions separately. The potential contribution of total organic carbon (TOC) for atrazine retention in different fractions was further investigated. It was found that clay fraction had the highest adsorption but the least desorption capacities for atrazine, while sand fraction had the lowest adsorption but the highest desorption capacities for atrazine. The adsorption percentage of atrazine, as compared with adsorption by the corresponding bulk soils, ranged from 53.6 to 80.5 %, 35.7 to 56.4 %, and 0.2 to 4.5 % on the clay, silt, and sand fractions, respectively. TOC was one of the key factors affecting atrazine retention in soils, with the exact contribution dependent on varying degree of coating with mineral component in different soil size fractions. The current study may be useful to predict the bioavailability of atrazine in different soil size fractions.
Superabsorbent Hydrogel As a Formulation to Promote Mineralization and Accelerate Degradation of Acetochlor in Soils.

Abstract:The excessive use of herbicides had caused serious environmental pollution and ecological problems. Therefore, it is imperative to explore an effective method to reduce herbicide residues and pollution. In the present study, we used superabsorbent hydrogels coated 14C-acetochlor (SH-ACE) to investigate its behavior in different soils under oxic conditions. After 100 days, the mineralization by SH-ACE was increased by 2.3%, 2.5% and 3.3% in the red clay soils, fluvio-marine yellow loamy soils and coastal saline soils, respectively, compared to the control group. This result indicated that the SH-ACE treatment resulted in more complete degradation and detoxification of acetochlor. In addition, the dissipation rates of acetochlor were significantly faster in the SH-ACE treatment, which reduced the persistence of acetochlor. The probable degradation pathways of acetochlor involved dechlorination, hydroxylation, deethoxymethylation, and the formation of thioacetic acid derivatives in the two treatments, but the contents of transformation products were completely different. These findings suggest that the SH-ACE treatment has a significant effect to accelerate the degradation of acetochlor. When developing green pesticides, we emphasize that superabsorbent hydrogel coating treatment should be considered as a promising method for ecological safety in the environment.
Characterization, genome functional analysis, and detoxification of atrazine by <i>Arthrobacter</i> sp. C2

Abstract:Residual injury of atrazine to the succeeding crops has been frequently reported. It is necessary to find a solution for the detoxification of atrazine contaminated soil. A high-efficient bacterial strain Arthrobacter sp. C2 for atrazine degradation was isolated in this study. The genomic information of the isolate C2, and its degradation characteristics and potential application in detoxification of atrazine contaminated soil were investigated. The results indicated that the isolate C2 genome contained 4,305,216 bp nucleotides, three plasmids, and 4705 coding genes. The degradation rates of atrazine at levels of 1, 10, 100 mg/L by the isolate C2 were 0.34, 1.94, 18.64 mg/L/d, respectively. The optimum temperature and pH for the isolate C2 to degrade atrazine were 30 degrees C and 7.0-9.0. Based on the metabolites detected by UPLC-TOF-MS/MS and genome annotation of the isolate C2, a common metabolic pathway of atrazine was proposed as that atrazine is firstly dechlorinated into hydroxyatrazine, and subsequently to N-isopropylammelide via dealkylation, and ultimately deaminated to cyanuric acid. Introduction of the isolate C2 into soil can enhance degradation of atrazine and thus eliminate the toxic effect of this herbicide on wheat growth. Our results indicate that the strain C2 could be a potential bioresource for bioremediation of atrazine contaminated soil. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:ZJ0273, propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino)benzoate, is a broad-spectrum herbicide being marketed for use on rape crops. However, environmental behavior and fate of ZJ0273 remained poorly understood. In this study, we used ZJ0273 labelled with 14C on the C ring to understand the transformation of ZJ0273 in aerobic soils. Results showed a first-order dissipation pattern for the parent compound, with half-lives ranging from 17.2 to 53.7 d, suggesting a short to moderate persistence. The dissipation of the parent molecule was accompanied by formation of bound residues and mineralization. The transformation of ZJ0273 appeared to decrease with decreasing soil pH and organic matter content. Differences were often observed in the formation of bound residues, and mineralization among different soils. After 100 d of incubation, the total bound residue accounted for 17.4–28.8% of the total applied amount in the three soils, while cumulative mineralization to CO2 reached 1.2% for an acidic soil, 7.7% for neutral and 9.9% for alkaline soil, suggesting that the herbicide in the neutral and alkaline soils met the non-accumulative criteria as stated in the directives by the Commission of the European Communities.
Superabsorbent Hydrogels Coating Increased Degradation and Decreased Bound Residues Formation of Carbendazim in Soil.

Abstract:The intensive use of pesticides has caused serious environmental pollution and ecological issues. Thus, it is imperative to explore an efficient way to minimize the pesticide residues and pollution. In the present study, we employed the superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs)-coated pesticide 14C-carbendazim (H-14C-MBC) to investigate the fate of MBC in aerobic soils and to assess the soil microbial state during incubation. The results showed that after coating with SHs, MBC dissipation was improved significantly by 34.2-54.1% compared with that in the control (p<0.05), reducing the persistence of MBC in soil matrix. At 100d, the release of 14C-CO2 was enhanced by 68.0% and 46.6% in neutral loamy soil and basic saline soil, respectively, with respect to the control, resulting in more complete degradation and detoxification of MBC. Additionally, the bound residue in soils, which was associated with potential environmental risk and pollution, was reduced by 15.2% and 14.2%, respectively, compared with that in control soils. The microbial diversity of post-H-14C-MBC soil varied, and microbial composition and abundance remained different from the control, even with the refreshment of soil stability and fertility compared with the blank soil. These results demonstrate the environmental behavior of SHs-coated MBC in soils, and illustrate that SHs-encapsulated formulations would be a promising measure for reducing the soil-residue pollution and environmental risk of pesticides.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The efficacy of a herbicide as soil treatment agent may be largely affected by soil characteristics. Understanding the relationship between herbicide efficacy and soil characteristics can provide decision basis for herbicide application according to local conditions. This study was aimed towards exploring the effect of soil characteristics on herbicidal activity of atrazine as a model herbicide to barnyard grass and thus to find an indicator for the herbicidal activity assessment of a herbicide against weeds. RESULTS The herbicidal activity of atrazine to barnyard grass varied greatly among the tested soils with the medium inhibition concentration (IC50), based on the amended concentration, ranging from 1.07 to 10.91 mg kg(-1). Uptake of atrazine by barnyard grass was negatively correlated with its adsorption onto soils, whereas it was positively related to the concentration of the herbicide in in situ pore water (C-IPW). Comparable IC50 values ranging from 1.14 to 1.38 were obtained from C-IPW in the tested soils with much smaller variation coefficient compared to those based on the traditional concentration (C-soil) of this herbicide in soils determined by extraction with organic solvents. CONCLUSION The concentration of atrazine in in situ pore water could be reliable to evaluate its bioavailability and herbicidal activity to barnyard grass. C-IPW of a herbicide in soil could be an indicator for guiding the practical application rate. (c) 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
Effects of dissolved organic matter from sewage sludge on the atrazine sorption by soils

Abstract:The effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM), water soluble organic matter derived from sewage sludge, on the sorption of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-trazine) by soils were studied using a batch equilibrium technique. Six paddy soils, chosen so as to have different organic carbon contents, were experimented in this investigation. Atrazine sorption isotherms on soils were described by the linear equation, and the distribution coefficients without DOM (K d ) or with DOM (K d * ) were obtained. Generally, the values of K d * /K d initially increased and decreased thereafter with increasing DOM concentrations of 0–60 mg DOC · L −1 in soil-solution system form. Critical concentrations of DOM (DOM np ) were obtained where the value of K d * was equal to K d . The presence of DOM with concentrations lower than DOM np promoted atrazine sorption on soils (K d * > K d ), whereas the presence of DOM with concentrations higher than DOM np tended to inhibit atrazine sorption (K d * < K d ). Interestingly, DOM np for tested soils was negatively correlated to the soil organic carbon content, and the maximum of K d * /K d (i.e. K max ) correlated positively with the maximum of DOM sorption on soil (X max ). Further investigations showed that the presence of hydrophobic fraction of DOM evidently promoted the atrazine sorption on soils, whereas the presence of hydrophilic DOM fraction obviously tended to inhibit the atrazine sorption. Interactions of soil surfaces with DOM and its fractions were suggested to be the major processes determining atrazine sorption on soils. The results of this work provide a reference to the agricultural use of organic amendment such as sewage sludge for improving the availability of atrazine in soils.

Abstract:Atrazine residue in soil is one of the serious environmental problems and continues to risk ecosystem and human health. To address the environmental behaviors and dissipation of atrazine and better manage the application of atrazine in reality, we comprehensively investigated the adsorption and desorption, migration ability, and vanishing of atrazine in three distinct soils in China including Jiangxi (JX, pH 5.45, TOC 0.54%), Nanjing (NJ, pH 6.15, TOC 2.13%), and Yancheng (YC, pH 8.60, TOC 0.58%) soils. The atrazine adsorptive capacity to the soils was arranged in the order of NJ > YC > JX. The leaching assay with profiles of the soils showed strong migration, suggesting it had a high bioavailability to weeds and potential for underground water contamination. We further investigated the effects of environmental factors such as soil moisture, microbial activity and photolysis on atrazine degradation and showed that the degradation of atrazine in the soil mainly underwent the abiotic process, most likely through hydrolysis and photolysis-mediated mechanisms, and to less extend through soil microbial catabolism. Using HRLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS and by comparing the measured and theoretical m/z values and fragmentation data, ten metabolites comprising eight degraded products and two conjugates were characterized. Atrazine existing in the soils and sprayed coordinately blocked the growth of three common weeds, which prompted us to use the minimal atrazine in practice to control the waste of the pesticide and its impact on the environment. Overall, our work provided an insight into the mechanisms for the degradation of atrazine residues in the soils and contributed to the environmental risk assessment of the pesticide and management in its application control in the crop rotation and safe production.
Effects of Nitrogenous and Phosphorous Fertilizers on Dissipation of Atrazine in Soil

Abstract:The effects of nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers on dissipation of atrazine herbicide in three soils,paddy field on desalting muddy polder,blue clayed paddy soil and paddy field on quaternary red clay,spiked with atrazine herbicides were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed that nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers can speed up the dissipation of atrazine in soils. The order of atrazine dissipation followed ANP>AN>AP>A within the same type of soil. And the dissipation of atrazine varied with different soils. The fastest dissipation of atrazine was found in blue clayed paddy soil,followed by paddy field on desalting muddy polder,and the slowest in paddy field on quaternary red clay. The half lives of atrazine were 22.8~30.2 d,25.1~36.6 d and 31.3~45.7 d in paddy field on desalting muddy polder,blue clayed paddy soil,and paddy field on quaternary red clay,respectively. The dissipation of atrazine related to the basic properties of soil and environment. The nitrogenous and phosphorous fertilizers could enhance dissipation of atrazine in soil,thus helpful to remediate the soil pollution of atrazine.
Changes in Atrazine Speciation and the Degradation Pathway in Red Soil During the Vermiremediation Process

Abstract:Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine) is a triazine herbicide intensively used in agricultural production and is often detected in different environmental matrices at concentrations above the permitted limit. This study investigated the influence of two earthworm species (epigeic Eisenia foetida and endogeic Amynthas robustus) on atrazine speciation and the degradation pathway. Our results revealed that both earthworms significantly accelerated atrazine degradation in a 28-day vermiremediation, and the residual atrazine declined from 4.23 +/- 0.21 mg/kg in bulk soils to 0.51 +/- 0.29 mg/kg (E. foetida) and 0.43 +/- 0.19 mg/kg (A. robustus). By consuming organic matter (from 40.37 +/- 1.14 to 36.31 +/- 1.55 and 34.59 +/- 1.13 g/kg for E. foetida and A. robustus) and neutralizing the soil pH (from 5.37 +/- 0.27 to 6.36 +/- 0.11 and 6.61 +/- 0.30 for E. foetida and A. robustus), both earthworms reduced humus-fixed atrazine and increased the available atrazine. The percentage of available atrazine increased from 8.80 +/- 0.21% in bulk soil to 10.30 +/- 0.29% and 16.42 +/- 0.18% in the vermiremediation treatments. Both earthworms promoted the hydroxyatrazine pathway by consuming soil organic matter and encouraged the deethylatrazine/deisopropy-latrazine pathway by neutralizing the soil pH. Our findings unravel a new mechanism of vermiremediation by improving the soil physical-chemical properties and altering the atrazine degradation pathway, providing new insights into the influential factors on atrazine bioremediation in red soil.
Tracking atrazine degradation in soil combining 14C-mineralisation assays and compound-specific isotope analysis

Abstract:The quantification of pesticide dissipation in agricultural soil is challenging. In this study, we investigated atrazine biodegradation in both liquid and soil experiments bioaugmented with distinct atrazine-degrading bacterial isolates. This was achieved by combining 14C-mineralisation assays and compound-specific isotope analysis of atrazine. In liquid experiments, the three bacterial isolates mineralised over 40% of atrazine, demonstrating their potential for extensive degradation. However, the kinetics of mineralisation and degradation varied among the isolates. Carbon stable isotope fractionation was similar for Pseudomonas isolates ADPT34 and ADP2T0, but slightly higher for Chelatobacter SR27. In soil experiments, atrazine primarily degraded into atrazine-desethyl, while atrazine-hydroxy was mainly observed in experiments with SR27. Atrazine mineralisation in soil by ADPT34 and SR27 exceeded 40%, whereas ADP2T0 exhibited a mineralisation rate of 10%. In experiments with ADPT34 and SR27, atrazine 14C-residues were predominantly found in the non-extractable fraction, whereas they accumulated in the extractable fraction in the experiment with ADP2T0. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) relies on changes of stable isotope ratios and holds potential to evaluate herbicide transformation in soil. CSIA of atrazine indicated atrazine biodegradation in water and solvent extractable soil fractions and varied between 29% and 52%, depending on the bacterial isolate. Despite atrazine degradation in both soil fractions, a significant portion of atrazine residues persisted, depending on the bacterial degrader, initial cell concentration, and mineralisation and degradation rates. Overall, our approach can aid in quantifying atrazine persistence and degradation in soil, and in optimizing bioaugmentation strategies for remediating soils contaminated with persistent herbicides.
Fate characterization of a novel herbicide ZJ0273 in aerobic soils using multi-position 14C labeling.

Abstract:ZJ0273, propyl 4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino)benzoate, is a novel herbicide being developed for use on rape crops. The environmental behavior and fate of ZJ0273, however, are not well understood. In this study, multi-position 14C-labeled compounds (B-ZJ0273 and C-ZJ0273) were used to investigate the fate of ZJ0273 in aerobic soils, and compare their differences in extractable residues (ER), bound residues (BR), and mineralization. ER for both 14C labels followed a similar dissipation trend in the same soil, and results showed a strong effect of soil pH, with the ER level being significantly higher in acidic soils than neutral or alkaline soils. The disappearance of parent compound followed first-order dynamics for both labels in the same soils. No difference in BR was observed between the two 14C-labels. BR increased with time and reached 17.5–35.3% of applied 14C in the three soils after 100-d incubation, which is much smaller than the non-accumulative criteria (70%) as stated in the directives by the Commission of the European Communities. Mineralization to CO2 also depended closely on the soil type, with the cumulative mineralized fraction being substantially greater in the neutral and alkaline soils than in the acidic soil. Results also showed that cumulative mineralization rates of the two labels in the acidic soil were much smaller than those in the neutral and alkaline soils. Mineralization of C-ZJ0273 (1.2–9.9%) was found to be more extensive than that of B-ZJ0273 (0.5–6.6%), suggesting that benzyl ring was more susceptible to cleavage than pyrimidine ring. The use of multi-position labeling proved to be valuable; it served the purpose of validating the rigorousness of experimental protocols, and provided insights into the behavior and fate of the different molecular fragments.
Enhancement of Atrazine Degradation in Paddy Soils by Organic Amendments

Abstract:The effect of three organic amendments, e.g. decomposed pig manure, rice straw and Chinese clover, on soil microbial biomass carbon content (SMBC) and the degradation of atrazine in three paddy soils spiked with atrazine at a rate of 10 mg.kg(-1) soil were studied. The results showed that SMBC significantly (P<0.01) increased with the application of organic amendments in all three soils. The largest increment of SMBC was observed in the treatment of decomposed pig manure, followed by addition of Chinese clover, and the smallest increase occurred in the application of rice straw. The dissipation of extractable atrazine was significantly enhanced by the organic amendments. Compared with the unamended treatment, the average half-life of atrazine in soil was reduced by 2, 1.6, and 1.4-fold in the treatments with decomposed pig manure, Chinese clover and rice straw, respectively. These results suggest that application of organic fertilizers in paddy fields may significantly alter soil microbial communities and affect the fate of agrochemicals such as atrazine. As the use of organic wastes is an important practice in rice production in many regions in Asia, such interactions should be considered when evaluating the fate and risk of pesticides in the environment.
Core bacteria carrying the genes associated with the degradation of atrazine in different soils

Abstract:Atrazine residues can pose serious threats to soil ecology and human health. Currently, the underlying relationship between soil microbial communities and the degradation genes associated with atrazine degradation remains unclear. In this study, the degradation characteristics of atrazine was investigated in ten different soil types. Further, diversity and abundance of degradation genes and succession of the bacterial community were also studied. The degradation of 10 mg/kg atrazine in different soil types exhibited an initial rapid trend followed by a gradual slowdown, adhering to the first-order kinetic equation. Atrazine significantly increased the absolute abundance of atz degradation genes. The increase in the absolute abundance of atzC gene was the largest, whereas that of atzA gene was the smallest, and the trzD gene was only detected in the Binzhou loam soil. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that the number of potential bacterial hosts of atzC was the highest compared with the other atz genes. Atrazine also altered the structural composition of the soil microbial community. The relative abundances of Ochrobactrum , Nocardiopsis , Lactobacillus , and Brevibacterium was increased in the atrazine-treated soils, while those of Conexibate , Solirubacter , and Micromonospora was decreased significantly compared with the control. Additionally, four atrazine-degrading bacterial strains Rhizobium AT1, Stenotrophomonas AT2, Brevibacterium AT3, and Bacillus AT4 were isolated from the atrazine-treated soils. After 14 d for inoculation, their degradation rate for 10 mg/L atrazine ranged from 17.56% to 30.55%. Moreover, the relative abundances of the bacterial genera, including these four isolates, in the atrazine-treated soil were significantly higher than those in the control, indicating that they were involved in the synergistic degradation of atrazine in the soil. This study revealed the degradation characteristics of atrazine, distribution of degradation genes, and succession of microbial communities, and explored the internal relationship between microbial community structure and atrazine degradation mechanisms in different soil types.

Abstract:The influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the sorption of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopylamino-1,3,5-triazine) by ten soils was investigated. Batch sorption isotherm techniques were used to evaluate the important physiochemical properties of soil determining the sorption of atrazine in the presence of DOM. The sorption of atrazine as a representative of nonionic organic contaminants (NOCs) by soil with and without DOM could be well described by the Linear and Freundlich models. The n values of the Freundlich model were generally near to 1, indicating that linear partitioning was the major mechanism of atrazine sorption by soil samples. The apparent distribution coefficient, K^*_d value, for atrazine sorption in the presence of DOM initially increased and decreased thereafter as the DOM concentration increased in the equilibrium solution. DOM at relatively lower concentrations significantly enhanced the sorption of atrazine by soil, while it inhibited the atrazine sorption at higher concentrations. For all the soil samples, the maximum of K^*_d was 1.1 3.1 times higher than its corresponding K d value for the control (without DOM). The maximum enhancement of the distribution coefficient ( Δ k^*_d ) in the presence of DOM was negatively correlated with the content of soil organic carbon (SOC) and positively correlated with the clay content. The critical concentration of DOM, below which DOM would enhance atrazine sorption, was negatively correlated with SOC. The influence of DOM on atrazine sorption could be approximately considered as the net effect of the cumulative sorption and association of atrazine with DOM in solution. Results of this study provide an insight into the retention and mobility of a NOC in the soil environment.

Abstract:Atrazine is the most extensively used herbicide in the agricultural and forestry sectors. Nevertheless, along with the increasing usage amount of Atrazine, its harm exposed gradually, the main problem is its residues in the environment. Microbial adsorption may effectively reduce the pollution caused by atrazine residue in the environment. In this study, a strain of fungi with the function of adsorbing atrazine was selected using microbial screening technology. According to its phenotypic characteristics and 18S rDNA gene sequencing, this strain was of the species genus Aspergillus and was named ECUST-TXZC2018. By studying the dynamic adsorption effect of this strain on atrazine, we found that this strain adsorbed atrazine after 36 hr at pH=5–7, and 20–30°C with more than 70% adsorption. These results demonstrated that ECUST-TXZC2018 had potential application ability to control atrazine residue pollution through the biosorption function.

Abstract:Agrobacterium rhizogenes AT13, a novel bacterial strain that was isolated from contaminated soil, could utilize atrazine as the sole nitrogen, thereby degrading it. Optimization of the degradation reaction using a Box-Behnken design resulted in 99.94% atrazine degradation at pH 8.57, with an inoculum size of 3.10 × 109 CFU/mL and a concentration of 50 mg/L atrazine. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-HRMS), liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses identified and quantified six reported metabolites and a novel metabolite (2-hydroxypropazine) from atrazine degradation by AT13. On the basis of these metabolites, we propose an atrazine degradation pathway that includes dichlorination, hydroxylation, deamination, dealkylation and methylation reactions. The toxicity of the degradation products was evaluated by Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T). Bioaugmentation of atrazine-polluted soils/water with strain AT13 significantly improved the atrazine removal rate. Thus, AT13 has potential applications in bioremediation.

Abstract:As one of the most troublesome herbicides, the natural behavior of atrazine has drawn great attentions. Currently, most studies investigated the adsorption of atrazine on clay minerals and humic substances (HSs), whereas, the transformation of atrazine catalyzed by clay and HSs was still unknown. In the present study, photo-degradation of atrazine in the presence of Fe3+-montmorillonite and Suwannee river fulvic acid (SRFA) in aqueous solution was systematically studied. In the Fe3+-montmorillonite system, the hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) induced removal of atrazine was strongly pH-dependent and the reaction rate increased with the decrease of pH. The presence of SRFA suppressed the atrazine degradation by Fe3+-montmorillonite at pH 3 but promoted its removal rate in the pH range of 4-6. Our results demonstrated that both center dot OH and singlet oxygen are responsible for the degradation process in the Fe3+-montmorillonite/SRFA hybrid system. The degradation of atrazine followed the cleavage of the C-N bonds in aliphatic chains of atrazine, and three major products, desethylatrazine, desisopropylatrazine and desethyldesisopropylatrazine were detected. The toxicity assessment showed that the toxicity of the reaction solution significantly decreased after the radical reactions, indicating that the transformation of atrazine on natural clay minerals with/without HSs could be considered as a detoxification pathway, which might be important to evaluate the environmental risk of atrazine in a natural system.
