Abstract:The heavy metal inventory and the ecological risk of the tidal flat sediments in Haizhou Bay were investigated. Results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments exceeded the environment background values of Jiangsu Province coastal soil, suggesting that the surface sediments were mainly polluted by heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn). In addition, the profiles of heavy metals fluxes can reflect the socio-economic development of Lianyungang City, and heavy metals inputs were attributed to anthropogenic activities. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were mainly present in the non-bioavailable residual form in surface sediments, whereas Cd and Mn were predominantly in the highly mobile acid soluble and reducible fractions. The ecological risk of the polluted sediments stemmed mainly from Cd and Pb. According to the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), however, the adverse biological effects caused by the heavy metals occasionally occurred in tidal flat.

Abstract:The river sediment acts not only as the major carrier but also the secondary sources of heavy metal contamination in river water.Elemental concentrations and chemical phases are essential to the study of heavy metal contamination in rivers and the evaluation of their ecological risks.In this study,1 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HC1) is used to leach heavy metals out from the samples (including both floodplain sediment and suspended particulate matter) collected from the Jiaojiang River,aiming to investigate the distribution of heavy metals (Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu and Cd) in acid-soluble and acid-insoluble phases,and thus to explore the major sources of heavy metals and their ecological risks.The concentrations of Zn,Pb,Cu and Cd in the Jiaojiang sediments are significantly higher than the local background values and their leaching rates,the ratios of elemental concentrations in the leachate to those in bulk samples,are higher than 60％.When the environment conditions change,heavy metals in the leachate can be easily released to the overlying water column and cause high ecological risks.The results of correlation and principal component analyses reveal that heavy metals in the leachate are incorporated into the sediments from aqueous solution,by processes such as adsorption onto Fe-Mn oxides and organic complexation,predominantly controlled by emissions from industrial and agricultural activities.According to the data of enrichment factor (EF) and potential ecological risk index,Cd is the most enriched element in the Jiaojiang sediments,especially in the upstream region,the Yongan River,where Cd is significantly enriched with high ecological risk,while Zn,Pb,Cr,Cu all display mild to moderate increase.The accumulation of heavy metals in the rivers in southeastern China and their ecological risks deserve further investigation.

Abstract:Present study investigated heavy metal pollution in the continuous upper river−estuary−sea systems of the Yellow River Delta (YRD). Significant seasonal differences (p < 0.05) for the heavy metal overall profile were observed, although there were no significant spatial variations among the different water bodies. Positive matrix factorization indicated that heavy metals primarily originated from anthropogenic activities (e.g., oil field development, mining, and agricultural activities). Chemical oxygen demand, water temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity influenced the distribution of heavy metals in water. The NO3− and total phosphorus concentrations were the main influencing factors in sediment, with both showing positive correlations with all heavy metals. Furthermore, low ecological risks were observed for sediment based on the values of the ecological risk and potential ecological risk indexes in the YRD. This study will assist with the effective control and management of heavy metal pollution in a continuous river−estuary−sea system.

Abstract:Bohai Sea is one of the most intensively exploited region in the world and its environment has been severely impacted by the extensive human activities. The Yellow River is the most important river which connects with the Bohai Sea. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing heavy metals (HMs) in 21 surface sediment samples collected from the Yellow River, China. Sequential extraction procedure (SEP), proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), was applied in the present study to determine the concentration and fractionation characteristics of these HMs. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution, fractionation, risk assessment, and sources of HMs, including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni). The results obtained from this research will play a significant role in understanding the migration, transformation, and accumulation of HMs for future research in study area. Results of fractionation revealed that most of the HMs in the study area mainly existed in residual fraction; however, Mn mostly existed in exchangeable fraction. A high percentage of reducible fractions was found for Cu and Pb. The mean contamination factor (Cf) values indicated that Pb was the highest. It was >1 and showed moderate contamination, followed by Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn, had <1 and indicated low contamination. Among studied HMs Pb had higher enrichment factor (EF) as compared to others. Significant positive correlations within all studied HMs and principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated their common sources, however, Pb showed the different contamination sources. The total contents of HMs in sediment were compared with the threshold effect level (TEL) and probable effect level (PEL) sediment quality guideline (TEL/PEL-based SQGs) values for trace metals in sediment, as well as literature reported data for comparative purposes, which indicated that the selected river in present study is not severe.

Abstract:To assess the sources and pollution status of heavy metals, surface sediments from the Old Yellow River estuary were systematically sampled and analyzed to determine the concentrations of seven heavy metals. The Pearson's correlation coefficient, enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, and principal component analysis were used to distinguish the sources and assess the pollution risk of heavy metals. The results showed that the distributions of Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and As were similar and mainly dominated by fine-grained sediments, whereas the distributions of Cd and Hg were irregular. Al was strongly correlated with Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, and Mz, and positively correlated with Cr. Except for Cr, Cd, and Hg, all the other elements were positively correlated with Mz. Multiple indicators indicated that Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and As were mainly derived from natural sources, whereas Hg and Cd were derived from anthropogenic sources.

Abstract:Water-sediment regulation (WSR) affects sediment transport in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River through periodic interception of sediment by dams and alteration of downstream flow rates, which leads to redistribution and recycling of elements. In this study, based on the evaluation of seven heavy metals (V, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Cd) in water, sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Henan section of the Yellow River, the effects of WSR on the redistribution and risk of release of metals to the downstream aquatic environment were investigated, and the range of impact and pollution sources were determined. Dissolved metals were well below guideline values for water quality, but Cd, Cr, and Cu were enriched in the sediments, especially in the reservoir, and the pollution load index (PLI) results indicated that the contamination in the study area remained very low. The level of contamination was decreased, and metals migrated downstream after WSR. The chemical speciation of metals indicates that anthropogenic input of metals occurs in upstream tributaries, and the risk of release of metals in the sediments increases after WSR, but the spatial distribution of the risk is more homogeneous. The distribution coefficient explains the distribution pattern of pollution, where SPM carries pollutants to the downstream while formed surface sediments through natural deposition during the sand-discharge stage. Based on geological and field investigations, upstream gold mining and downstream riverbank cultivation activities in the study area are potential sources of Cu and Cd pollution. These findings are crucial to the better understanding of patterns of metal release from artificial impoundments in river systems and provide a theoretical basis for ecological development in the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:This study analyzed trace elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg) in 42 surface sediment samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary and Laizhou Bay to characterize their spatial distributions and pollution statuses. Determination of trace elements was carried out by ICP-MS for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd, and by AFS for As and Hg. The results showed that the average concentrations for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg were 13.21 mg/kg, 10.61 mg/kg, 21.03 mg/kg, 24.41 mg/kg, 0.14 mg/kg, 6.47 mg/kg, and 14.15 μg/kg, respectively. All the trace elements were classified in the first-class sediment according to the Chinese national standard "Marine Sediment Quality". The higher concentrations and pollution levels were found in the eastern Yellow River estuary which due to inputs from the Yellow River, and northeastern Laizhou Bay which could be attributed to the impacts of human activities at Longkou Port. This study has important scientific value for further understanding the source-sink effects of pollutants and regional environmental effects of heavy metals.

Abstract:The concentrations of heavy metals in 21 samples collected from surface sediments from the Qinghai section of the Yellow were investigated in order to evaluate their distribution and pollution levels. The total concentrations showed wide variations with Cu 11.86 similar to 57.02 mg/kg, Fe 17236.67 similar to 41340.00 mg/kg, Mn 431.93 similar to 877.27 mg/kg, Ni 14.58 similar to 86.11 mg/kg, Zn 67.18 similar to 149.00 mg/kg, Cr 87.84 similar to 169.70 mg/kg, Pb 1.21 similar to 20.69 mg/kg, and Cd 0.27 similar to 1.43 mg/kg. The mean values of the heavy metal contents were arranged in the following decreasing order: Fe>Mn>Cr>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb>Cd. The correlation between Cu, Fe, and Zn concentrations was significantly positive. These heavy metals had common sources, mutual dependence, and identical behavior during transport. However, there was no significant correlation among some of these metals, indicating different anthropogenic and natural sources. PCA extracted three components with eigenvalues explaining 76.259% of the total variance. Fe, Mn, and Zn had a common natural origin controlled by the first component. Cu, Ni, and Cd could originate anthropogenic sources controlled by the second component. The higher values of geo-accumulation index, enrichment factor, and pollution load index of Cr in the Qinghai section were attributed principally to anthropogenic activities such as industrial effluents, vehicular emissions, and terrigenous influx from the river. Zn appeared to pose no risk at all of the sites of the system. In total, the pollution class from the Qinghai section of the river is 0-1, belonging to the unpolluted to moderately polluted degree.
Distribution and Transport of Heavy Metals in Estuarine–inner Shelf Regions of the East China Sea

Abstract:This study analyzes the distribution and transportation of heavy metals in surface sediments by determining the concentrations of 6 heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd) based on 164 surface sediments collected from the East China Sea (ECS). The results indicated that concentrations of heavy metals were higher in the south than the north with a clear boundary near 30° N. The distributions of the six heavy metals could be divided into four groups that corresponded well with different sediment components, suggesting that hydrodynamic sorting processes play an important role in the selective transportation of sedimentary heavy metals. In addition, the spatial distributions of heavy metals were more consistent with fine-grained sediments having a grain size lower than 32 μm. Heavy metal concentrations were slightly higher than found in previous studies conducted from 2002 to 2010. In addition, their spatial patterns have changed drastically compared to data from 2006, suggesting that intensive inland human activities have had a profound impact on heavy metal transportation and distribution in the estuarine & inner-shelf regions of the ECS.
Impact of water-sediment regulation on the concentration and transport of dissolved heavy metals in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities in river basins, especially large-scale water conservancy projects, have notably impacted the physical, chemical and ecological environments of estuaries and coastal areas. In this paper, the effects of water and sediment regulation (WSR) on the concentration and transport of heavy metals in the Yellow River were studied based on a continuous daily heavy metal survey in both the middle reaches (Xiaolangdi station) and lower reaches (Lijin station) of the Yellow River during the WSR period in 2019. The results indicated that the variation in the water oxidation-reduction environment of the Xiaolangdi reservoir during the WSR process exerted an important impact on the concentrations of dissolved Cu, Cd, Pb, Cr and As at the Xiaolangdi station but exerted almost no influence on the concentration of dissolved Ni. At Lijin station, the dissolved heavy metal content first increased and then decreased in the first stage, which mainly depended on the release of heavy metals from resuspended sediments. In the second stage, the heavy metal content gradually decreased due to adsorption onto fine particles discharged from the reservoir. The dissolved heavy metal flux during the water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) period accounted for 16.9–33.4% of the annual total dissolved heavy metal flux. WSRS changed transport of water and sediment. The dissolved heavy metal concentrations at the Xiaolangdi station were mainly controlled by the discharge of water and sediments from the Xiaolangdi reservoir, while the dissolved heavy metal concentration at the Lijin station was largely affected by the sediments resuspended from downstream riverbeds and the water and sediment scheduling mode of the Xiaolangdi reservoir. Dissolved heavy metal transportation was highly influenced by the WSR process within a short time. Human intervention, especially WSRS operation, apparently alters the natural states of both the mainstream and estuarine environments of the Yellow River.

Abstract:The Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) in the Yellow River has greatly changed the natural state of water and sediment discharges into the sea, which is likely to have a significant impact on the ecological environment in the estuary and even Bohai Sea. Based on a total of 33 surface sediment samples collected in the Yellow River estuary during the WSRS in 2018, analyses of grain size, contents of heavy metals, major elements, and clay minerals were conducted to evaluate sources and pollution status of heavy metals. The results indicated that sediment compositions were significantly impacted by the process of the WSRS. Most metals were from natural sources, but As may be affected by human activities. Contamination assessments of heavy metals revealed that the WSRS had limited impact on the ecology environment, but As could be a threat to the environment.
Accumulation and migration of particulate trace metals by artificial flood event of the Yellow River: From Xiaolangdi reservoir to estuary

Abstract:Reservoir construction increasingly alters the natural transport of riverine water and sediment to the sea, including the trace metals and other pollutants. In 2018, an intensive flood event and 412 million tons of sediment were released from the Xiaolangdi dam during the water-sediment regulation of Yellow River, one of the world's largest sediment releases. During the artificial flood event, the surface sediments in Xiaolangdi Reservoir (XLD) and the Yellow River estuary, suspended sediments at Lijin Station were collected. The concentration and speciation of particulate Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb, as well as the major geochemical composition were analyzed, to characterize the behaviors of the metals from the reservoir to estuary mixing zone, and elucidate the controlling mechanisms. The results showed that for exogenous phases, Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn were likely bound to the FeMn oxides, whereas Pb and Cd were mainly adsorbed in the carbonates. The trace metals in XLD were stably combined with fine-grained bottom sediments at high concentrations before dam release. During the delivery from reservoir to downstream channel, the binding of Cr, Ni and Cu with FeMn oxides was markedly enhanced. Pb and Cu showed obvious migration from carbonates to FeMn oxides, and Cd and Pb were even released into the water. The accumulation and migration of trace metals were controlled by the adsorption of fine-grained components, especially FeMn oxides and carbonates, and influenced by the oxidizing processes. After entering the estuary, the trace metals were greatly scavenged by reservoir-sourced fine particles, tended to bound to organic matter affected by the reducing environment. Our results suggest that dam regulation and artificial flood events will likely alter the existing forms and redox state of trace metals and the potential environmental effects should be considered.

Abstract:The Changjiang River discharges large amounts of fine-grained sediments into the East China Sea (ECS) each year.Fine-grained sediment transports far distance and spreads widely when it enter the continental shelf, which makes it an excellent archive to explore the source to sink of sediment from river to continental shelf.In this paper,the ICP-AES method was used to determine the concentration of heavy metals of fine-grained surface sedi-ments of 44 samples collected in the Changjiang Estuary and its adjacent areas.The spatial distribution patterns, sedimentary fluxes,and source to sink of these elements were discussed.The results show:(1)the spatial distri-bution patterns and sedimentary fluxes of heavy metals in the area are similar,which have high values in the Changjiang Estuary and the inner mud shelf,decreasing dramatically in southeastern direction;(2)The heavy met-als in the fine-grained sediments in the study areas mainly originate from the Changjiang River;then they disperse in two ways,one along the inner shelf outside the Zhe-Min coast,the other along the Changjiang River diluted wa-ter spreading area and into the outer continental shelf.Our results suggest that the sub-aquatic Changjiang River delta and the inner shelf of ECS are dominant sinks for the heavy metals from the Changjiang River.
[Evaluation and Source Analysis of Heavy Metal Pollution in Sediments of the Yellow River Basin Based on Monte Carlo Simulation and PMF Model]

Abstract:As sediment is an essential component of rivers, the enrichment of heavy metals in sediment presents a serious threat to the aquatic environment. Many industrial cities are located along the Yellow River, and heavy metal pollution is a prominent problem in these areas. Thus, the study of heavy metal pollution in sediments of the Yellow River basin is of vital significance to the safety of the Yellow River basin ecosystem. In this study, we collected data on the concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Hg) in the sediments of the Yellow River basin from 2000 to 2020. We first analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals based on descriptive statistics and geostatistics and then used the Monte Carlo method to evaluate the probability of the ground accumulation index(Igeo), potential ecological risk, and toxicity units. Finally, the number of pollution sources and their contribution rates were determined by combining the positive definite matrix factor (PMF) decomposition model and Pearson correlation analysis. It was found that the mean values of ω(Pb), ω(As), ω(Zn), ω(Ni), ω(Cu), ω(Hg), ω(Cr), and ω(Cd) in the Yellow River basin sediments were 26.92, 11.78, 87.17, 31.13, 24.96, 0.07, 73.36, and 0.58 mg·kg-1, which exceeded the mean soil background values in the Yellow River basin provinces by 1.27, 1.08, 1.26, 1.05, 1.09, 2.32, 1.14, and 5.95 times, respectively, among which Cd exceeded the standard by the largest factor and should be taken seriously. The Igeo was ranked as Cd>Hg>Cr>Cu>Pb>Zn>As>Ni, and Cd and Hg showed medium-severe pollution. The proportions of heavy ecological risk in sediments in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Yellow River basin were 18.6%, 15.7%, and 7.1%, respectively, with a decreasing trend. Heavy metals in the sediments of the Yellow River basin were in a low-toxicity state. The PMF-Pearson correlation analysis showed that the four sources of heavy metals in the Yellow River basin sediments were mining sources (42.2%), natural activities (38.3%), agricultural activities (11.6%), and electroplating wastewater (7.9%). The results of this study can provide a basis for developing relevant pollution prevention and control measures in the Yellow River basin.

Abstract:Heavy metals in river sediments pose major threats to aquatic ecological environments and public health. This study investigated the characteristics, sources, and risks of heavy metals in surface sediments from the mainstream of the Yellow River. The grain size, loss on ignition (LOI), and content of Mn, Zn, V, Ni, Pb, and Cr in 61 samples were measured. The contamination level was evaluated using six indices, namely sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), contamination factor (Cf), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), modified degree of contamination (mCd), potential ecological risk index (RI), and pollution load index (PLI), and their spatial distribution was determined through Kriging interpolation. The sources of heavy metals were defined using multivariate statistical analyses, namely Pearson’s correlation analysis (P’CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA). The results show that Pb has the highest ecological risk, followed by Cr, Ni, and V, whereas Mn and Zn pose no risk. Mn and Zn mainly originate from natural processes, while Cr from anthropogenic process. V, Pb, and Ni are most likely from mixed sources. The ecological risk of heavy metals increases significantly when the Yellow River passes through the Loess Plateau. Furthermore, compared with SQGs and Cf, the assessments of heavy metal contamination by Igeo, RI, mCd and PLI are more objective and accurate. This study provides a powerful reference for contamination control and ecological security in the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:The speciation of Cu,Pb,Zn and Cd in sediments and the concentrations of Cu,Pb,Zn and Cd in overlying water,filtered water and pore water of the Nanhai Lake,which is an abandoned channel of the Yellow River,are analyzed in this paper accompanied with the data of AVS(Acid-Volatile Sulfide)and SEM(Simultaneous Extract Metals)in sediments.The data are compared with those of the Yellow River due to the same origin of sediments between the Nanhai Lake and the Yellow River.The investigation was made for the movement and transformation law of heavy metal in solid-liquid two phase system.The results show that heavy metals concentration in residual fraction in Nanhai Lake is close to which in the Yellow River.Over 81.1% selected heavy metals are in suspended form in overlying water of the Nanhai Lake and the Yellow River.The high concentration of copper in Nanhai Lake's overly water is released from the sediments.The pore water functions as a pathway for heavy metal mobilization from sediments to water phase.The AVS is the controlling factor on heavy metal precipitation;whereas,the organic complexing agent is the key factor on mobilization of Cu from sediments to water.
Elemental geochemical evidence for the river-derived sources of trace metals in surface sediments from Hangzhou Bay, East China Sea

Abstract:Coastal estuaries are often heavily subject to riverine influences by the inputs of sediment from terrestrial sources. Hangzhou Bay (HZB) is threatened by the riverine derived trace metals from two large rivers of Qiantang River (QTR) and Yangtze River (YZR). However, previous studies mainly focused on the incidental transport from the largest river in China (YZR) and failed to simultaneously evaluate the contributions of these two rivers, especially the directly flowing river of QTR, by their trace elemental geochemical composition and distribution. Herein, a comprehensive study identified the river-derived sources of multiple trace metals in surface sediments which transported from both of the rivers. The sampling stations were separated into three regions of YZR, HZB, and QTR based on their spatial distributions of sediment grain size and components. The significant variations for most of the trace metals concentrations, except for Cd, Th, and U, were found among three regions (χ2 ≥ 8.22, p ≤ 0.016). The highest concentrations in HZB were mainly resulted from the grain size effect (68.82% of the total variance), while the highest concentrations of Sr, Cd, and Ba in YZR and Zr and Hf in QTR were attributed to the anthropogenic source (11.90%) and mineral composition (6.21%) of river basins. After normalized the diversity of multiple trace metals concentrations and the influence of grain size by ratios of Igeo and EFLi, three regions were effectively distinguished. It was indicated that As, Cd, and Sb were enriched in the sediments of rivers by anthropogenic source (EFLi > 1.5 and/or Igeo > 1). The results evidenced that, after removing the influence of grain size, elemental geochemical composition of the surface sediments confidently identified the river-derived anthropogenic sources of the enriched trace metals from two major rivers, and largely from YZR.

Abstract:Surface sediments in lower reach of the Yangtze River,collected in 2004 and 2005,were analyzed for heavy metals including Co,Cr,Cu, Ni,Pb,Zn,Hg and As.The whole concentration and their first fraction(including exchangeable,water and acid soluble phase) of BCR sequential extraction were analyzed using ICP-MS.Results showed that most heavy metals come from natural release of earth element,while increased concentration of Cu,Zn,Hg and As demonstrated anthropogenic inputs.The levels of heavy metals in upper basin were higher than that near the Yangtze estuary.Jingjiang,a deposition zone,showed combined pollution of heavy metals.At last Cu and Zn with both high whole concentration and bioavailability had potential ecosystem risk to lower reach of the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Systematic and scientific assessments on heavy metal pollution are greatly important to protecting the coastal eco-environment. In this paper, the spatial distribution, pollution degree, ecological toxicity and possible sources of eight heavy metal elements collected from the 126 marine and 715 terrestrial surface sediments surrounding Dingzi Bay were analyzed by obtaining concentration measurements. The results revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals followed a pattern: inner bay > terrestrial areas > outer bay. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg were found to accumulate in fine particles (<0.063 mm), while As showed an association with specific particles (>0.25 mm and <0.016 mm). Spatial pollution patterns varied from non-polluted to low pollution levels overall, with localized contamination by individual elements. In addition to natural sources, four types of anthropogenic pollution were identified in the marine and terrestrial settings. Agricultural pollution, characterized by As predominance, exerted profound effects on both terrestrial and marine environments. Industrial pollution, featuring Hg dominance, was widespread in land environment and predominantly linked to atmospheric deposition. Traffic pollution, marked by elevated Pb and Cd, was concentrated around factories and densely populated areas. Maritime pollution, comprising Hg, Cr, Cd, and Zn, primarily occurred in the nearshore areas outside the bay. The findings of this study provide scientific data to the authorities in charge of sustainable coastal zone management in the South Yellow Sea.

Abstract:Variations in the concentrations of major particulate heavy metals (PHMs) (Mn, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni) and fluxes into the sea during the water–sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) in the Huanghe (Yellow River) were examined based on observational and measured data during June and July of 2009. Two stages of variations in the concentrations of PHMs were observed in the WSRS with lower values in the early stage and higher values in the late stage. The early stage corresponded to a high water discharge with coarser sediment that was largely scored from the riverbed, and the late stage corresponded to a low water discharge with much finer sediment that was released from the Xiaolangdi reservoir. The significant increase in PHM concentrations by 2–4 fold from the early to the late stage largely resulted from a decrease in the suspended-sediment grain size and an increase in the quantity of anthropogenic pollutants caused by changes in the sediment sources from riverbed in the lower reaches to the Xiaolangdi reservoir during the WSRS. The concentrations of PHMs, particularly in the late stage of the WSRS, were approximately two times as high as those during the pre-WSRS period as the anthropogenic pollutants have been increasing in recent years. More than 57% of the annual quantity of PHMs was transported to the sea during the WSRS, and over 34% of that from the Xiaolangdi reservoir was delivered to the sea during the late stage of the WSRS over a period of approximately 4–5days. This large quantity of heavy metals, with a high proportion of labile components because of the increasing contribution of anthropogenic pollutants, emptied into the sea over a short period and may thus drastically alter the eco-environment in the river mouth and its adjacent seas.
