Abstract:Background: Oral mucositis is probably the most debilitating complication that can arise in treating a patient with head and neck cancer. Little is known about the impacts of oral microbiota on the initiation and progression of mucositis.Methods: Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, dynamic changes in oral bacterial profile as well as correlations between the severity of mucositis and bacterial shifts during radiotherapy were investigated.Findings: Our results revealed that bacterial community structure altered progressively during radiation therapy, in parallel with a marked increase in the relative abundance of some Gram-negative bacteria. Patients who eventually developed severe mucositis harbored a significantly lower bacterial alpha diversity and higher abundance of Actinobacillus during the phase of erythema - patchy mucositis. Accordingly, a random forest model for predicting exacerbation of mucositis was generated, which achieved a high predictive accuracy (AUC) of 0.89.Interpretation: Oral microbiota changes correlate with the progression and aggravation of radiotherapy-induced mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Microbiota-based strategies can be used for the early prediction and prevention of the incidence of severe mucositis during radiotherapy. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
[Chemical depletion of cumulative phosphorus in soils].

Abstract:Cumulative phosphorus was defined as the phosphorus which was unavailable for plants and accumulated in soils fertilizer application. In this paper, chemical depletion of cumulative phosphorus in soils was studied by methods of batch equilibrium, kinetic, and anionic exchange resin membrane. The results showed that desorption amount of cumulative P increased with time increasing, and the desorption process was consonant with second-order kinetic equation. Release rate of P in different treatments was in order of PK > NPK > NK. The amount and rate of P released from red soil were higher than those of Fluvio-aquic soil. Desorbed P was significantly correlated with soil available P and P uptake by Plant. The maximum utilization of cumulative P in soils was about 45% of total phosphorus.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this project was to evaluate research in basic oral care interventions to update evidence-based practice guidelines for preventing and treating oral mucositis (OM) in cancer patients undergoing radio- or chemotherapy.MethodsA systematic review of available literature was conducted by the Basic Oral Care Section of the Mucositis Study Group of MASCC/ISOO. Seven interventions—oral care protocols, dental care, normal saline, sodium bicarbonate, mixed medication mouthwash, chlorhexidine, and calcium phosphate—were evaluated using the Hadorn (J Clin Epidemiol 49:749–754, 1996) criteria to determine level of evidence, followed by a guideline determination of one of the following: recommendation, suggestion, or no guideline possible, using Somerfield’s (Classic Pap Cur Comments 4:881–886, 2000) schema.ResultsFifty-two published papers were examined by treatment population (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant) and by whether the intervention aimed to prevent or treat OM. The resulting practice suggestions included using oral care protocols for preventing OM across all treatment modalities and age groups and not using chlorhexidine mouthwash for preventing OM in adults with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Considering inadequate and/or conflicting evidence, no guidelines for prevention or treatment of OM were possible for the interventions of dental care, normal saline, sodium bicarbonate, mixed medication mouthwash, chlorhexidine in patients receiving chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplant, or calcium phosphate.ConclusionsThe evidence for basic oral care interventions supports the use of oral care protocols in patient populations receiving radiation and/or chemotherapy and does not support chlorhexidine for prevention of mucositis in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Additional well-designed research is needed for other interventions to improve the amount and quality of evidence guiding future clinical care.

Abstract:Objective To establish a high-quality and evidence-based interventions for management of oral mucositis on cancer patients who received chemo-radio therapy in Chinese clinical status .Methods Under the guidance of knowledge-to-action ( KTA ) process framework , we retrieved all evidence in evidence-based health care databases by the method of a structured search of the literature .Through reviewed and analysed the quality of literature and analysed national health environment , we synthesized , distilled and refined the evidence into best practice interventions according to JBI Best Practice Information Sheet author guideline and JBI -developed 2010 Grades of Effectiveness and levels of evidence .All interventions evaluated by relative experts and focus-group-discussion .Results After assessed the quality of literature , there were three articles that had been collected by the guideline of evidence based clinical practice , fourteen by systematically assessment , one by investigation report of current multicentric status , added three expert ’ s literature review or opinion , one evidence literature review .That all collected information had been formed four best information practice manual and one evidence-based summary.To establish the evidence-based nursing interventions for oral mucositis should include oral assessment process , oral care process , the pamphlet of patient education , basic oral care technique and quality audit standards .Conclusions Through the process of interventions ’ establishment , scientific credible and rigorous attitudes guided .Interventions supported by abundant evidence to ensure that they were practical , economical and suitable to manage and guide oral mucositis among cancer patients in Chinese clinical .

Abstract:Objective To describe knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) of oncology registered doctors and nurses on the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis and to provide targeted training for medical staff. Methods Self-designed questionnaires were used to survey 225 oncology registered doctors and nurses. Results There was difference in oral mucositis knowledge of medical staff from different departments. Different situations when oral mucositis occurred affected medical staff ’s knowledge and attitude score. KAP scores of doctors and nurses were not statistically significant. Conclusion KAP of oral mucositis of medical staff is influenced by their own characteristics and targeted training should be provided for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis and improve medical staff’s practice.
Assessment of oral mucositis in adult and pediatric oncology patients: an evidence-based approach

Abstract:Oral mucositis is a frequent side effect of cancer treatment and can lead to delayed treatment, reduced treatment dosage, altered nutrition, dehydration, infections, xerostomia, pain, and higher healthcare costs. Mucositis is defined as "inflammatory lesions of the oral and/or gastrointestinal tract caused by high-dose cancer therapies. Alimentary tract mucositis refers to the expression of mucosal injury across the continuum of oral and gastrointestinal mucosa, from the mouth to the anus" (Peterson, Bensadoun, & Roila, 2008, p. ii122). Evidence demonstrates that oral mucositis is quite distressing for patients. In addition, the majority of oncology nurses are unaware of available guidelines related to the care of oral mucositis. A multidisciplinary Oral Mucositis Committee was formed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to develop evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies for adult and pediatric oncology patients experiencing oral mucositis. The first step was implementing an evidence-based nursing oral assessment. The Iowa Model was used to guide this evidence-based practice initiative. The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) is reliable and valid, feasible, and sensitive to changing conditions. The OAG was piloted on an Adult Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit leading to modification and adaptation. The pilot evaluation found 87% of patients had an abnormal oral assessment involving all categories in the tool. Nursing questionnaires showed that staff (8/23; 35% response) felt they were able to identify at risk patients using the OAG (3.3; 1-4 scale), and the tool accurately identifies mucosal changes (2.9; 1-4 scale). A knowledge assessment found nurses correctly identified OAG components 63% of the time. Unlike results from a national survey, most University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics nurses (63%) were aware of national guidelines for prevention and treatment of oral mucositis. Developing an evidence-based nursing policy and updating documentation systems was done before implementation occurred. Computer-based and printed educational materials were developed for nursing staff caring for oncology patients. Team members were responsible for facilitating adoption in clinical areas. After organizational roll out, the nursing assessment was documented in all patients 87% of the time, and 99% for inpatients. The highest risk population, head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation, had documentation in 88% of audited visits. Other clinics required further work. Changing the system to the electronic medical record created an additional need for integration of the evidence-based practice with housewide documentation of oral assessment being completed 60.9% of the time. Use of an evidence-based assessment is the first step in a comprehensive program to reduce a common and highly distressing side effect of cancer treatment. Nursing documentation of oral assessment is well integrated on inpatient units. Opportunities for improvement remain in ambulatory care. Multidisciplinary team collaborations to expand evidence-based assessment and research questions generated from this work will be shared.

Abstract:Objective: To summarize the best evidence for managing radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer, and improve the quality of care. Methods: According to the "6S" evidence pyramid model, we searched local and other part of world published clinical guidelines, expert consensus, evidence summary, and systematic review. The literature quality assessment followed the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II). for guidelines, AMSTAR-2 for systematic reviews, and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Evidence-Based Health Care Center's quality evaluation tool for expert opinions and expert consensus articles. The quality of other literature was evaluated according to the type of original literature. If there were any conflicts about the conclusions drawn from different sources of evidence, this study followed the principle of high-quality evidence priority and the latest published authoritative literature priority. The "JBI Evidence Pre-grading and Evidence Recommendation Level System 2014" was adopted for the evidence lacking a grading system. Quality evaluation, evidence extraction, and summary were performed by 2 or more researchers, combined with the advice of the head and neck cancer radiotherapy professionals. Results: Finally, a total of ten pieces of literature were included. Twenty-two best evidence items for radiotherapyinduced oral mucositis management were summarized from six aspects, including multidisciplinary management, oral assessment, basic oral care, pain management, nutritional support, and application of honey or propolis. Conclusions: This study provides clinical caregivers with the evidence-based measures on managing radiotherapyinduced oral mucositis. Clinical backgrounds, patients' condition, willingness, economy, and cost-effectiveness should be fully considered when promoting evidence transformation. Applying evidence-based approaches with high feasibility, strong appropriateness, clinical significance and high effectiveness could reduce the incidence of severe radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. Integrative Cancer Therapies

Abstract:Background: Patients with cancer receiving tumor therapy often suffer from oral mucositis. Objectives: The aim of this project was to summarize experiences with nursing procedures by experts in integrative oncology and to establish recommendations for nursing interventions that can prevent or cure mucositis. Methods: The study design was an interdisciplinary consensus process based on a systematic literature search. Results: The panel discussed and agreed on 19 nursing procedures, which included mouthwashes, such as teas, supplements, oil applications, and different kinds of ice cubes to suck, as well as flaxseed solution, propolis, and mare milk. Twelve interventions were classified as effective, with effectiveness for OraLife, propolis, sea buckthorn pulp oil, marshmallow root tea also for xerostomia, Helago chamomile oil, mare milk, and Saliva Natura rated as highly effective in clinical experience. In the systematic literature search, a total of 12 out of 329 randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses on chamomile (n = 3), Calendula (n = 1) and sage (n = 1), propolis (n = 2), and sucking ice cubes (cryotherapy; n = 5) met all inclusion criteria. Trial evidence for effectiveness in oral mucositis was revealed for propolis and cryotherapy. Conclusions: The current evidence supports the use of some nursing procedures (f.e. propolis for 2 and 3 grade mucositis) for improving oral mucositis during cancer therapies. There is still a need to define general clinical practice guidelines for the supportive treatment of mucositis, as well as for more interdisciplinary research in this area.

On the premise that the effects of IKS have not been given the deserved scholarly attention in the SC supply chain context, this paper investigates the effects of IKS on sSupply cChain pPerformance (SCP) and fFirm pPerformance (FP). The hypothesized model is operationalised with survey data and analyzed using regression analysis. The findings add credence to the positive effects of IKS inter-firm knowledge sharing and identify IKS inter-firm knowledge sharing and supply chain performanceSCP as antecedents to higher FP firm performance in the SCsupply chain.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Mucositis is a significant toxicity of cancer therapy with numerous systemic sequelae. The goal of this systematic review was to update the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer and International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of mucositis.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>The literature was reviewed systematically to identify interventions for mucositis. Studies were rated according to the presence of major and minor flaws according to previously published criteria. The body of evidence for each intervention and in each treatment setting was assigned a level of evidence based on previously published criteria. Guidelines were developed based on the level of evidence, with 3 possible guideline determinations: <i>recommendation </i>, <i>suggestion </i>, or <i>no guideline possible </i>. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The guideline covers evidence from 1197 publications related to oral or gastrointestinal mucositis. Thirteen new guidelines were developed for or against the use of various interventions in specific treatment settings, and 11 previous guidelines were confirmed after aa review of new evidence. Thirteen previously established guidelines were carried over because there was no new evidence for these interventions.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>The updated MASCC/ISOO Clinical Practice Guidelines for mucositis provide professional health caregivers with a clinical setting‐specific, evidence‐based tool to help with the management of mucositis in patients who have cancer.</p></section>

Abstract:This study examines sibling incest aversion as an index of the Oedipus complex. The scale's construction and its relation to presence of opposite sex siblings, guilt, and neuroticism is described. Males displayed less aversion and more variability in incest aversion than did females. There was a positive relation between aversion and having an opposite sex sibling for males, but not for females. For both sexes there was a positive relation between sex guilt and aversion. Compared to high or low incest aversion females, middle females displayed a mild obsessive-compulsive pattern, higher hostility guilt, more neurotic complaints, less extraversion and more sensitization. The high reliability and significant relations with relevant variables demonstrate the usefulness of this scale.

Abstract:BackgroundConsiderable progress has been made in our understanding of the biological basis for cancer therapy-induced mucosal barrier injury (mucositis). The last formal review of the subject by MASCC/ISOO was published in 2007; consequently, an update is timely.MethodsPanel members reviewed the biomedical literature on mucositis pathobiology published between January 2005 and December 2011.ResultsRecent research has provided data on the contribution of tissue structure changes, inflammation and microbiome changes to the development of mucositis. Additional research has focused on targeted therapy-induced toxicity, toxicity clustering and the investigation of genetic polymorphisms in toxicity prediction. This review paper summarizes the recent evidence on these aspects of mucositis pathobiology.ConclusionThe ultimate goal of mucositis researchers is to identify the most appropriate targets for therapeutic interventions and to be able to predict toxicity risk and personalize interventions to genetically suitable patients. Continuing research efforts are needed to further our understanding of mucositis pathobiology and the pharmacogenomics of toxicity.

General resilience: Taxonomy and strategies

Abstract:Because resilience thinking has increasingly been used in various disciplines and domains and extended with a broader scope of concepts, it is difficult to find a unified and encompassing definition by which it can be accurately referred to. Furthermore, to elucidate and synthesize all resilience theories and conceptual frameworks that have been put forward will require volumes of written work. We therefore argue in this paper that research works pursuing the common strategies of system resilience require a language that can help describe the specific contexts in which resilience is applied. We propose here a taxonomy for general resilience that consists of four orthogonal dimensions, namely, type of shock or perturbation, target system, phase of concern, and type of recovery. Furthermore, it has also been observed that despite its domain-dependency, there exist resilience strategies that cut across multiple disciplines and domains, specifically, redundancy, diversity and adaptability. There is another, however, which we argue here in detail that is equally compelling, i.e., a strategy that can break the rigid stability that leads to greater fragility and a more severe collapse with prolonged period of severity. Specifically, the strategy is to deliberately inject or induce regularly small “controlled” shocks into the system to regulate the build-up of complexity and rigidity among its components and their connections. Doing so will not only prolong the period of stability of the system, but also shorten the period of severity in the wake of a severe shock.

Abstract:Background: Mucositis is a common and highly impactful side effect of conventional and emerging cancer therapy and thus the subject of intense investigation. Although common practice, mucositis assessment is heterogeneously adopted and poorly guided, impacting evidence synthesis and translation. The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Mucositis Study Group (MSG) therefore aimed to establish expert recommendations for how existing mucositis assessment tools should be used, in clinical care and trials contexts, to improve the consistency of mucositis assessment. Methods: This study was conducted over two stages (January 2022-July 2023). The first phase involved a survey to MASCC-MSG members (January 2022-May 2022), capturing current practices, challenges and preferences. These then informed the second phase, in which a set of initial recommendations were prepared and refined using the Delphi method (February 2023-May 2023). Consensus was defined as agreement on a parameter by >80% of respondents. Findings: Seventy-two MASCC-MSG members completed the first phase of the study (37 females, 34 males, mainly oral care specialists). High variability was noted in the use of mucositis assessment tools, with a high reliance on clinician assessment compared to patient reported outcome measures (PROMs, 47% vs 3%, 37% used a combination). The World Health Organization (WHO) and Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) scales were most commonly used to assess mucositis across multiple settings. Initial recommendations were reviewed by experienced MSG members and following two rounds of Delphi survey consensus was achieved in 91 of 100 recommendations. For example, in patients receiving chemotherapy, the recommended tool for clinician assessment in clinical practice is WHO for oral mucositis (89.5% consensus), and WHO or CTCAE for gastrointestinal mucositis (85.7% consensus). The recommended PROM in clinical trials is OMD/WQ for oral mucositis (93.3% consensus), and PRO-CTCAE for gastrointestinal mucositis (83.3% consensus). Interpretation: These new recommendations provide much needed guidance on mucositis assessment and may be applied in both clinical practice and research to streamline comparison and synthesis of global data sets, thus accelerating translation of new knowledge into clinical practice. Implementation of strategies to improve nutritional intervention for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis: a best practice implementation project

Abstract:Background: Oral mucositis is a common complication after radiotherapy or chemotherapy in cancer patients. Oral mucositis can affect the patient's food intake and their confidence in treatment as patients are more likely to suffer severe pain, experience weight loss, encounter an interruption or change of cancer treatment plan, and are reported to have a reduced survival from the disease. Nutritional intervention is the primary nursing focus in patients with oral mucositis treated by chemoradiotherapy. Objectives: The current best practice implementation project aimed to establish best practice principles in nutritional interventions for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis. Methods: This was an evidence-based audit and feedback project that used a three-phase approach at a public hospital in China. Phase 1 involved developing five evidence-based audit criteria informed by current best available evidence, and undertaking a clinical audit of current practice on 50 patients in the Department of Radiation Oncology of Nanfang Hospital using the JBI's Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System. Phase 2 utilized the Getting Research into Practice component of the Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System to identify barriers to compliance with best practice principles and developed strategies and resources to improve compliance. Phase 3 involved conducting a postaudit using the same sample size and audit criteria to re-evaluate compliance with best practice. Results: Baseline results showed that compliance rates were 0% for criteria 1 and 2, 76% for criteria 3 and 5, and 82% for criterion 4. The implementation of strategies, including establishing a multidisciplinary team with a dietitian, creating training and education programs for all staff and patients, utilizing a scale regarding diet to assess patients' current diet, and establishing a nutrition intervention nursing procedure to supervise implementation of the nutritional intervention for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis, increased compliance with best practice, achieving compliance rates of at least 82% for all five audit criteria. Conclusion: The implementation of context-specific strategies improved compliance with evidence-based practice in the nutritional intervention for patients with cancer treatment-related oral mucositis. Sustainability of best practice is important, with further audits planned to evaluate the sustainability of these practice changes.

Abstract:Background: In the pediatric oncology population, oral mucositis as a consequence of chemotherapy is a highly prevalent complication which strongly affects both the quality of life and treatment possibilities of the patients. Still, the etiopathological mechanisms carrying to its development are not fully understood, although a possible role of oral dysbiosis has been previously investigated with unclear conclusions. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the available evidence on the role of microbiota in the development of oral mucositis. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Three electronic databases were searched up until April 2023 and a following manual search included the reference lists of the included studies and reviews. Studies reporting microbiological and clinical data of pediatric patients treated by antineoplastic drugs were included. Results: Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria, reporting an average mucositis prevalence of 57,6%. Candida albicans infections were frequently observed in studies performing microbiological analysis on oral lesions, in contrast with the low rate detection of the Herpes simplex viruses. Bacterial species such as coagulase-negative Staphylococci and Streptococcus viridans were detected more frequently on lesion sites. Studies reporting a quantitative analysis of the general flora did not show comparable results. Risk of bias assessment among studies was generally considered high or very high. Conclusions: While the specific role of certain microbiological agents, such as Candida albicans, was frequently reported among studies, data regarding the general dynamics of oral microbiota in the development of oral mucositis are lacking in the current literature. Thus, more studies are needed to provide the knowledge required in order to improve protocols for the prevention and treatment of this threatening complication.

Abstract:Mucositis is a pathological condition characterised by inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the alimentary canal, particularly in the mouth (oral mucositis) and the gastrointestinal tract. It is a common side effect of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and it is sometimes responsible for treatment interruptions. Preventing mucositis throughout the alimentary tract is therefore crucial. However, current interventions mainly target either oral or gastrointestinal side effects. This review aimed to investigate the use of systemically administered anti-inflammatory agents to prevent mucositis in cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment. PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science, WHO ICTRP and ClinicalTrials.gov were screened to identify eligible randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The published literature on anti-inflammatory agents provides mixed evidence regarding the degree of efficacy in preventing/reducing the severity of mucositis in most anticancer treatments; however, sample size continued to be a significant limitation, alongside others discussed. Our review yielded a list of several anti-inflammatory agents that exhibit potential mucositis-preventive effects in cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment, which can be used to inform clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: Radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis can affect cancer patients' quality of life, even necessitate cancer therapy and influence prognosis. Chinese patent medicines (CPMs) have been widely used as complementary alternative medicines for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis, and their efficacy and safety require further evaluation. Therefore, this study was conducted to provide references for clinical practice. Methods: Ten databases were searched electronically and manually to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their inception to August 2021, concerning the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis with CPMs. The prevalence, pain level, and the severity of radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, as well as the effectiveness rate and adverse effects of CPMs, were set as the outcome criteria. The assessment criteria of the Cochrane Handbook were used to determine study quality and bias, and meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.4.1 software. Results: A total of 2,312 cases from 27 RCTs were included. Most studies were considered to have a low or unclear risk of bias. More research is available on the use of CPMs in the prevention of radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis than in its treatment. As for the prevention, it was proved that CPMs could significantly reduce the prevalence of radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, especially for the severe types, and decrease pain levels (p < 0.05). For treatment, CPMs could alleviate the symptoms, promote the healing of ulceration in radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, and thus improve the efficiency of clinical treatment (p < 0.05). The results of subgroup analyses were mainly consistent with the above results. The adverse effects of CPMs mainly included gastrointestinal reactions and bitter taste, and no serious adverse events were reported. Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis indicated CPMs might be effective for the prevention and treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis through reducing the prevalence, decreasing the occurrence of severe types, alleviating the symptoms, and promoting the healing of ulceration. However, due to the limited number of eligible studies and the publication bias, more high-quality, double-blinded, placebo-controlled RCTs are still needed in future research. Abstract:PurposeThe aim of this study was to review the available literature and define clinical practice guidelines for the use of agents for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal mucositis.MethodsA systematic review was conducted by the Mucositis Study Group of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). The body of evidence for each intervention, in each cancer treatment setting, was assigned an evidence level. Based on the evidence level, one of the following three guideline determinations was possible: recommendation, suggestion, and no guideline possible.ResultsA total of 251 clinical studies across 29 interventions were examined. Panel members were able to make one new evidence-based negative recommendation; two new evidence-based suggestions, and one evidence-based change from previous guidelines. Firstly, the panel recommends against the use of misoprostol suppositories for the prevention of acute radiation-induced proctitis. Secondly, the panel suggests probiotic treatment containing Lactobacillus spp., may be beneficial for prevention of chemotherapy and radiotherapy-induced diarrhea in patients with malignancies of the pelvic region. Thirdly, the panel suggests the use of hyperbaric oxygen as an effective means in treating radiation-induced proctitis. Finally, new evidence has emerged which is in conflict with our previous guideline surrounding the use of systemic glutamine, meaning that the panel is unable to form a guideline. No guideline was possible for any other agent, due to inadequate and/or conflicting evidence.ConclusionsThis updated review of the literature has allowed new recommendations and suggestions for clinical practice to be reached. This highlights the importance of regular updates.
