Abstract:Double carbohelicenes have attracted considerable attention due to their aesthetic structures, distinct π -conjugation extension, inherent chirality, and intriguing optical and electronic properties. Herein, the concise de novo synthesis of a new double [5]carbohelicene 1 together with its chiroptical properties, isomerization process and lasing application is presented. 1 was synthesized by a simple protocol involving the formation of a 6,6′-bipentacene as the key intermediate. It is worth noting that 1 existed as two diastereomers 1 - PP/MM and 1 - PM , which were successfully isolated and unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The optical resolution of the racemic 1 - PP/MM was successfully achieved by chiral-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and 1 - PP and 1 - MM were characterized by circular dichroism. Interestingly, it was found that 1 - PP/MM could be completely isomerized to 1 - PM upon heating, and the detailed thermodynamics and kinetics of the isomerization process were systematically investigated. 1 - PM exhibited deep-red luminescence with emission maximum at 723 nm and fluorescence quantum yield as high as 32.95%. Consequently, we can showcase the lasing application of 1 - PM by doping with epoxy resin to assemble a bottle microlaser spontaneously, which the lasing wavelength is 796.6 nm at a threshold of 0.8 mJ cm −2 . We believe that our studies, including the facile synthesis methodology, detailed isomerization studies, and lasing application, will shed some light on the design and synthesis of novel carbohelical systems with more functions.

Boosting Quantum Yields and Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Penta- and Hexahelicenes by Doping with Two BN-Groups

Abstract:The incorporation of boron–nitrogen (BN) units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an isoelectronic replacement of two carbon atoms can significantly improve their optical properties, while the geometries are mostly retained. We report the first non-π-extended penta- and hexahelicenes comprising two aromatic 1,2-azaborinine rings. Comparing them with their all-carbon analogs regarding structural, spectral and (chir)optical properties allowed us to quantify the impact of the heteroatoms. In particular, BN-hexahelicene BN[6] exhibited a crystal structure congruent with its analog CC[6] , but displayed a fivefold higher fluorescence quantum yield (φ fl = 0.17) and an outstanding luminescence dissymmetry factor (| g lum | = 1.33 × 10 −2 ). Such an unusual magnification of both properties at the same time makes BN-helicenes suitable candidates as circularly polarized luminescence emitters for applications in materials science.

Abstract:Increased interest in chiral functional dyes has stimulated activity in the field of boron-containing helicenes over the past few years. Despite the fact that the introduction of boron endows π-conjugated scaffolds with attractive electronic and optical properties, boron helicenes have long remained underdeveloped compared to other helicenes containing main group elements. The main reason was the lack of reliable synthetic protocols to access these scaffolds. The construction of boron helicenes proceeds against steric strain, and thus the methods developed for planar systems have sometimes proven ineffective in their synthesis. Recent advances in the general boron chemistry and the synthesis of strained derivatives have opened the way to a wide variety of boron-containing helicenes. Although the number of helically chiral derivatives is still limited, these compounds are currently at the forefront of emissive materials for circularly-polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Yet the design of good emitters is not a trivial task. In this perspective, we discuss a number of requirements that must be met to provide an excellent emissive material. These include chemical and configurational stability, emission quantum yields, luminescence dissymmetry factors, and color purity. Understanding of these parameters and some structure-property relationships should aid in the rational design of superior boron helicenes. We also present the main achievements in their synthesis and point out niches in this area, e.g. stereoselective synthesis, necessary to accelerate the development of this fascinating class of compounds and to realize their potential in OLED devices and in other fields.

Generation of oxidative species from UV ( 254 nm ) light induced photolysis of food ingredients

Abstract:The effect of UV light on generating oxidative radicals though photolysis of nutritional compounds Aachen Elsinghorst Ultraviolet light (UV) processing of juices has emerged as an attractive alternative to heat pasteurization due to its effectiveness in inactivating bacteria and enhanced retention of flavor and nutritional attributes. It also has effects on nutritional compounds within solution. Fructose has shown a significant reactivity during ultraviolet light (UV, 254 nm) processing of fruit juices that can adversely affect product quality. Present study demonstrates that this reactivity of fructose is due to the oxidative nature of products formed from UV induced photolysis of fructose. This was accomplished using fluorescein, a fluorescent dye that loses fluorescence intensity upon reaction with oxidative species. Fructose caused a concentration dependent decay of fluorescence from fluorescein only in presence of UV, indicating oxidative nature of photolysis products of fructose. The transient oxidative species including free radicals and not one of the final photolysis products, furan, were responsible for fluorescence decay. Addition of an antioxidant and removal of oxygen from solution lowered the rate of fluorescence decay, suggesting strategies that can be employed to lower the deleterious effects of fructose on product. Abstract:Abstract An efficient one-pot strategy for the facile synthesis of double boron–oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (dBO-PAHs) with high regioselectivity and efficient skeletal editing is developed. The boron–oxygen-fused rings exhibit low aromaticity, endowing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with high chemical and thermal stabilities. The incorporation of the boron–oxygen units enables the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to show single-component, low-temperature ultralong afterglow of up to 20 s. Moreover, the boron–oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can also serve as ideal n -type host materials for high-brightness and high-efficiency deep-blue OLEDs; compared to single host, devices using boron–oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-based co-hosts exhibit dramatically brightness and efficiency enhancements with significantly reduced efficiency roll-offs; device 9 demonstrates a high color-purity (Commission International de l’Eclairage CIE y = 0.104), and also achieves a record-high external quantum efficiency (28.0%) among Pt(II)-based deep-blue OLEDs with Commission International de l’Eclairage CIE y < 0.20; device 10 achieves a maximum brightnessof 27219 cd/m 2 with a peak external quantum efficiency of 27.8%, which representes the record-high maximum brightness among Pt(II)-based deep-blue OLEDs. This work demonstrates the great potential of the double boron–oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as ultralong afterglow and n-type host materials in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The precise synthesis of helicenes with topologically defined length and specific heteroatomic perturbation in the screw-like conjugated skeletons plays an emerging role in the manipulation of chiral materials. Facile, selective, and programmable routes to helicenes or heterohelicenes are highly desirable yet challenging for structure-chiroptical property relationship studies. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of NBN-doped helicenes with boron atoms in the inner rims, enabled by the highly regioselective one-pot borylation of rationally designed precursors with, namely, fold-in or pan-out manner. The incorporation of nonbonded boron and nitrogen atoms resulted in narrow-band emission and improved optical properties for the single-stranded carbon helix. In addition, numbers and arrangement modes of fused six-membered rings have distinct effects on configurational stability and chiroptical properties, revealing that BN-[6]H with strong circular dichroism is a promising candidate for chiral sensors. The combination of experimental and theoretical studies on these helical structures might provide insights into the design of helically chiral small-molecule-based sensors or emitters.
A Carbazole‐Centered Expanded Helicene Stabilized with Hexabenzocoronene (HBC) Units

Abstract:The synthesis and stabilization of heteroatom-doped nanocarbon molecules, such as carbazole-containing (super)helicenes, present significant challenges due to the complexities involved in maintaining structural integrity and electronic functionality. In this study, we successfully synthesized a carbazole-centered expanded tris-hexabenzo[7]helicene (1) via a facile FeCl3-mediated Scholl coupling reaction. 1 exhibits both chemical and chiral stability and demonstrates fluorescence at 628 nm with a quantum yield of 0.40. Additionally, the enantiomers of 1 display pronounced chiroptical properties, including a distinct circular dichroism (CD) signal spanning from 300 to 600 nm. The absorption dissymmetry factor (|gabs|) is determined to be 2.98 × 10−3, while the circularly polarized luminescence brightness (BCPL) is measured as 32.50 M−1 cm−1.

Abstract:Aromatic boron-containing organic compound C 2 B 2 H 2 with an unusual C=C bond was experimentally synthesized in 2017. Here we investigate the structure and bonding nature of C 2 B 2 H 2 and its derivatives C 2 B 2 R 2 using DFT and VB theory. While the C=C bond in C 2 B 2 R 2 consists of a π bond and a charge-shift (CS) bond, C 2 B 2 F 2 has the lowest LUMO energy and its LUMO is similar with that of ethylene, suggesting that C 2 B 2 F 2 can be an ideal dienophile for the Diels-Alder reaction. Subsequently, the mechanism and stereoselectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction of C 2 B 2 F 2 with 5-substituted cyclopentadienes are studied. Computations demonstrate that these Diels-Alder reactions are feasible thermodynamically and kinetically. The stereoselectivity and distortion angles of C 2 B 2 R 2 exhibit linear correlations with the electronegativity difference between the two substituents bonded to the C(sp 3 ) of cyclopentadiene, suggesting that the stereoselectivity of related Diels-Alder reaction products can be modulated by the substitution of cyclopentadiene. Considering the current interests in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), we design six BNCT drugs through the Diels-Alder reaction of C 2 B 2 F 2 with dienes containing peptide fragments. Thus, we demonstrate a kind of new method of designing three-in-one BNCT drugs with the facile Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract:Due to the expanding applications of icosahedral carboranes in medicinal and materials chemistry research, their functionalizations have become one of the central themes in boron-rich cluster chemistry. Although several strategies for incorporating nitrogen-containing nucleophiles on single boron vertex of the icosahedral carboranes (C 2 B 10 H 12 ) have been developed, methods for preparing clusters with vicinal B–N moieties are still lacking. The steric bulk of icosahedral carboranes as well as disparate electronic and steric nature of the N-containing groups have rendered the vicinal diamination challenging. In this article, we show how a developed Pd-catalyzed process is used to incorporate an array of NH-heterocycles, anilines, and heteroanilines with various electronic and steric profiles onto the vicinal boron vertices of meta-carborane cluster via sequential or one-pot fashion. Importantly, oxidative cyclizations of the cross-coupling products with indoles and pyrroles appended to boron vertices generate a previously unknown class of all-boron-vertex bound carborane-fused six- and seven-membered ring heterocycles. Photophysical studies of the meta -carborane-fused heterocycles show that these structures can exhibit luminescence with high quantum yields and are amenable to further manipulations.

Abstract:Arenes are 2D aromatics while dicarbadodecaborane clusters are branded as 3D aromatic molecules. In this work we prepare molecules that feature fused 2D/3D aromatic systems that represent boron-doped analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-carborane substituent enables swift arene borylation on boron bromide or hydride precursors to furnish five- and six-membered boracycles in conjugation with the arene. The mechanism was modeled by DFT computations implying a concerted transition state and analyzing the photophysical properties revealed high quantum yields in the six-membered systems.

Abstract:The efficient synthetic route was disclosed to prepare optically active triarylborane-based [5]helicenes, 7B-PhHC and 7B5N-PhHC. Their emission wavelengths are tunable by both the chemical structure modification and the tuning of excited state charge transfer dynamics via selection of appropriate solvents or addition of external F-, enabling the full-color circularly polarized luminescence with moderate to good quantum yields (0.07-0.51) and high luminescence dissymmetry factors (g(lum) > 5 x 10(-3)).

Abstract:Reaction of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-borenium ion with 9,10-distyrylanthracene forms four B-C bonds through two selective, tandem hydroboration-electrophilic C-H borylations to yield an isolable, crystallographically characterizable polycyclic diborenium ion as its [NTf2 ]- salt (1). Dehydrogenation of 1 with TEMPO radical followed by acidic workup yields a 3,9-diboraperylene as its corresponding borinic acid (2). This sequence can be performed in one pot to allow the facile, metal-free conversion of an alkene into a small molecule containing a boron-doped graphene substructure. Doubly boron-doped perylene 2 exhibits visible range absorbance and fluorescence in chloroform solution (Φ=0.63) and undergoes two reversible one-electron reductions at moderate potentials of -1.30 and -1.64 eV vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene in DMSO. Despite sterically accessible boron centers and facile electrochemical reductions, compound 2 is air-, moisture-, and silica gel-stable.
A Highly Fluorescent Bora[6]helicene Exhibiting Circularly Polarized Light Emission

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped helicenes have attracted great research interest due to their inherent chirality enabling fascinating new applications. Herein we present our successful synthesis of 19c-boratribenzo[bc,ef,hi][6]helicene, the hitherto longest and first configurationally stable pristine bora[n]helicene. It displays intense orange fluorescence and circularly polarized light (CPL) emission with a high quantum yield of up to 84%. X-ray single crystal analysis reveals a highly twisted, helical shape and intriguing intermolecular stacking. Complexation with a size-complemental aza[4]helicene yielded an unprecedented hetero-chiral π–π-stacked helicene dimer.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a longitudinally helical molecular nanocarbon, hexabenzoheptacene (HBH), along with its dimethylated derivative (HBH-Me), which are composed of six benzene rings periodically benzannulated to both zigzag edges of a heptacene core. This benzannulation pattern endows the resulting nanocarbons with a helical heptacene core and local aromaticity, imparting enhanced solubility and stability to the system. The chiral HBH-Me adopts a more highly twisted conformation with an end-to-end twist angle of 95°, enabling the separation of the enantiomers. Both HBH and HBH-Me can be facilely oxidized into their corresponding dications, which exhibit enhanced planarity and aromaticity upon loss of electrons. Notably, both longitudinally helical nanocarbons readily promote solid state packing into two-dimensional (2D) arrangement. Single-crystal microbelts of HBH-Me show hole mobility up to 0.62 cm2 V-1 s-1, illustrating the promising potential of these longitudinally helical molecules for organic electronic devices.

Abstract:Six boron heterocyclic radicals with different conformations or configurations were synthesized in solid neon and identified by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy as well as quantum-chemical calculations. The ground-state boron atom selectively attacks the C = C bond of cycloheptene forming η 2 (1,2)-BC 7 H 12 complex ( A ), which contains a chair conformation and a boat conformation. Species A isomerizes to the 2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydroborocine radical ( B ), which involves an eight-membered boron heterocyclic ring and also has two isomers observed. The 1-(prop-1-en-1-yl)-2,3,4-dihydro borole radical ( C ) with E -configuration and Z -configuration is generated as the final product under UV light irradiation through ring contraction reaction and the hydrogen atom transfer reaction. The observation of species A and further photo-isomerization to species C is consistent with theoretical predictions that these reactions are thermodynamically exothermic and kinetically facile. This work not only provides a possible route for future design and synthesis of corresponding borole derivatives, but also provides new insights into the structural and spectroscopic information of boron heterocyclic radicals with different conformations and configurations.

Abstract:As an indispensable class of organic dyes, boron‐containing luminescent materials play a vital role in organic luminescent materials. Chiral luminescent systems have a wide range of practical applications. Boron‐containing chiral luminescent materials can not only effectively improve the luminescent properties of CPL materials, but also bring unique luminescent properties. Comprehensive Summary As a class of organic dyes, boron‐containing compounds play an important role in organic luminescent materials. They have attracted considerable attention due to their unique photophysical properties. Chiral luminescent systems have a wide range of practical applications in biological imaging, optoelectronic devices, information storage and 3D display. Boron‐containing chiral luminescent materials can not only effectively improve the luminescent properties of CPL materials, but also bring unique properties to the system, which enables them to be used as favorable CPL emitting materials for an expanded range of applications. Here, we review the research progress of boron‐containing chiral luminescent materials by the detailed discuss according to different chiral skeletons, such as point chirality, 1,1'‐binaphthyl, [n]helicenes, [2,2]paracyclophane and pillar[5]arenes. We believe that this review is of significance for the development of boron‐containing compounds and CPL materials. Key Scientists The studies of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) based on small organic molecules have advanced significantly. However, boron‐containing chiral luminescent materials have gained attention only in recent years. In 2019, Zhao's group prepared a binaphthalene derivative modified with triarylborane, representing the organic small molecule luminescent material to exhibit CPL characteristics responsive to both solvent and fluoride ions. In 2020, the Chen's group used the unique luminescence properties and steric effects of triarylborane and triphenylamine to prepare CPL materials based on the planar chiral pillar[5]arenes. In 2021, Wang's group developed a new class of B,N‐embedded double hetero[7]helicenes molecules that exhibit strong chiroptical responses in the UV‐visible region. In the same year, He's group used asymmetric reactions to synthesize boron‐based point‐chirality compounds with high efficiency and enantioselectivity. In 2023, Ravat synthesized 1,4‐B,N‐embedded helicenes exhibiting narrow‐band fluorescence and CPL. During this period, Matthias Wagner et al obtained (BO)2‐doped tetrathia[7]helicene via an efficient four‐step synthesis, and Zheng reported the nearly pure green circularly polarized electroluminescent device (CP‐OLED). In 2024, Chen's group prepared B,N‐embedded hetero‐[9]helicenes offering a pathway towards significantly enhanced efficiency in helicene‐based CPEL.

Abstract:π-Conjugated macrocycles involving electron-deficient boron species have received increasing attention due to their intriguing tunable optoelectronic properties. However, most of the reported B(sp2)-doped macrocycles are difficult to modify due to the synthetic challenge, which limits their further applications. Motivated by the research of non-strained hexameric bora- and aza-cyclophanes, we describe a new class of analogues MC-BN5 and MC-ABN5 that contain charge-reversed triarylborane (Ar3B) units and oligomeric triarylamines (Ar3N) in the cyclics. As predicted by DFT computations, the unique orientation of the donor-acceptor systems leads to an increased dipole moment compared with highly symmetric macrocycles (M1, M2 and M3), which was experimentally represented by a significant solvatochromic effect with large Stokes shifts up to 12 318 cm-1. Such a ring-structured design also allows the easy peripheral modification of aza-boracyclophanes with tetraphenylethenyl (TPE) groups, giving rise to a change in the luminescence mechanism from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) in MC-BN5 to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in MC-ABN5. The open-shell characteristics have been chemically enabled and were characterized by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) for MC-BN5. The present study not only showed new electronic properties, but also could expand the research of B/N doped macrocycles into the future scope of supramolecular chemistry, as demonstrated in the accessible functionalization of ring systems.
π-Extension of a Multiple Resonance Core: Double Helical and Heptagon-Embedded Nanographenes

Abstract:Multiple resonance (MR) boron-nitrogen doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BN-PAHs) have shown compelling thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), surpassing those of their hydrocarbon analogues. However, the structural variety of π-extended BN-PAHs remains narrow. In this study, we synthesized three double helical BN-doped nanographenes (BN-NGs), 2 a-2 c, and three heptagon-embedded BN-NGs, 1 a-1 c, by π-extension of the MR core. During the formation of 2 a, a nanographene with one heptagon (1 a) was obtained, whereas further dehydrocyclization of the [6]helicene units within 2 b and 2 c led to heptagon structures, yielding other two BN-NGs containing double heptagons (1 b and 1 c). These BN-NGs (2 a-2 c and 1 a-1 c) showed pronounced redshifts of 100-190 nm compared to the parent MR core, while preserving the TADF characteristics and prolonging the delayed fluorescence lifetime to the millisecond level. Furthermore, the integration of a heptagon ring into 1 a-1 c expanded the conjugation, reduced the oxidation potentials, and yielded a more flexible framework compared to those of 2 a-2 c. The enantiomers of 2 a-2 c, 1 a, and 1 c were resolved and their chiroptical properties were studied. Notably, 1 a and 1 c exhibited increased chiroptical dissymmetry factors.
