Abstract:Background Excessive oxidative stress is one of the key pathophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine, and increasing antioxidant intake has proven to be an effective strategy for the prevention and improvement of migraine symptoms. To explore the relationship between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and the occurrence of migraine attacks. Methods Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999–2004 were utilized. Logistic regression, stratified analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were employed to investigate the association between CDAI and migraine attacks. Results A total of 8,137 adults aged ≥20 were enrolled, comprising 1,610 patients with migraine and 6,527 non-migraine individuals. After adjusting for all covariates, CDAI was negatively correlated with migraine. In the overall participants, compared with the CDAI Q1 (−5.83 to −2.14) group, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for migraine in Q3 (−0.59 to 1.53) and Q4 (1.53–44.63) groups were 0.71 [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.54–0.92, p = 0.011] and 0.64 (95% CI: 0.47–0.87, p = 0.005), respectively. After stratifying by age and gender, the protective effect was more pronounced in females aged 20–50, with adjusted OR for Q3 (−0.59 to 1.53) and Q4 (1.53–44.63) groups of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.40–0.90, p = 0.013) and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.30–0.78, p = 0.003), respectively. The RCS curve indicated a nonlinear relationship between CDAI and migraine in females aged 20–50, with a threshold of 0.006. Conclusion CDAI is negatively correlated with migraine attacks, and a higher CDAI may be an effective protective factor in preventing migraine attacks, especially in women aged 20–50.

Abstract:Objective Inflammation plays an important role in migraine development. Dietary interventions that reduce the inflammatory state are effective for migraine prophylaxis. However, the association between the inflammatory potential of diet and migraine in the general US adult population remains unknown. We evaluated whether the inflammatory potential of diet is associated with severe headache or migraine in US adults. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed data from adult participants in the 1999–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Severe headache or migraine was determined based on self-reported information. Severe headache or migraine was defined as an affirmative response to: "Have you had a severe headache or migraine in the past 3 months?" The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was used to assess the inflammatory potential of the diet. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (95%CI) for the association between DII and severe headache or migraine. A multivariable-adjusted restricted cubic spline model was constructed to establish the OR curves at three knots to examine the possible nonlinear dose-response association between DII and severe headache or migraine. Results Of 10,359 participants included in this study (mean age, 46.3 [0.3] years; 5,116 [49.1%] males), 2,083 (22.2%) reported previous episodes of severe headache or migraine, whereas 8,276 (77.8%) did not. After adjusting for potential confounders, the DII score was associated with severe headache or migraine (odds ratio [OR], 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03–1.15; P = 0.003). Compared to participants with the lowest tertile of DII score (i.e., T1; -4.42 ≤ DII score ≤ 0.77), those with the highest tertile (i.e., T3; 2.44 < DII score ≤ 5.18) had an adjusted OR for severe headache or migraine of 1.46 (95% CI, 1.20–1.77; P < 0.001). The multivariable restricted cubic spline showed a nonlinear association between DII and severe headache or migraine ( P = 0.012). In two piecewise regression models, the adjusted OR of developing a severe headache or migraine was 1.19 (95% CI, 1.04–1.37; P = 0.012) in participants with a DII score ≥ 1.48, whereas there was no association between DII and severe headache or migraine in participants with a DII score < 1.48. Subgroup analyses showed that DII was associated with severe headache or migraine in women (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.31–2.28), individuals who were aged 20-50 years (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.29–2.14), individuals who married or living with a partner (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.19–1.85), individuals who lived alone (OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02–1.81), those with a high level of education (OR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.26–2.36), in those with a low family income (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.10–2.28), and in those with a medium or high family income (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.17–1.86), and BMI < 25 kg/m 2 (OR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.21–2.41). Conclusions The inflammatory potential of the diet is associated with severe headache or migraine in US adults.

Abstract:Background: Previous studies indicate that vitamin C may decrease the occurrence and intensity of migraines, but the evidence is restricted due to small sample sizes. This study aimed to determine the magnitude of the association between dietary vitamin C intake and migraine in the general population. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilised data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2004. Participants who had severe headaches or migraines in the past 3 months were classified as experiencing migraines. Dietary vitamin C intake was evaluated using the 24-h dietary recall system. Logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression and stratified analyses were employed to assess the association between dietary vitamin C intake and migraine. Results: The study included 4101 participants, of whom 702 (17.12%) experienced migraine. The study revealed an inverse association between dietary vitamin C intake and migraine (odds ratio [OR] = 0.89, 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 0.83-0.96, p = 0.002) after adjusting for demographic covariates, lifestyle covariates, laboratory tests, physical examinations, physical activity, dietary covariates and comorbidities. When vitamin C intake was categorised, the adjusted OR (95% CI) for migraine in Q4 (highest vitamin C intake) was 0.64 (95% CI = 0.49-0.84, p = 0.001) compared to Q1 (lowest vitamin C intake). The RCS regression showed a linear inverse relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and migraine (pnon-linearity = 0.449). The findings remained consistent, and no significant interactions were found among different groups. Conclusions: Dietary vitamin C intake was inversely associated with migraine, and a linear negative relationship was found between vitamin C intake and migraine.

Abstract:Abstract Background The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a dietary antioxidant score that plays a protective role in many diseases, including depression, osteoporosis, papillomavirus infection, etc. However, the association between CDAI and coronary heart disease (CHD) is currently unclear. We aim to explore the correlations between CDAI and the risk of CHD. Methods Eligible participants were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018. All participants in this cross-sectional study are required to undergo two separate 24-h dietary recall interviews. Average daily intakes of dietary antioxidants were used to calculate CDAI. CHD status was determined through a questionnaire. Weighted multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the relationship between CDAI and CHD. Moreover, we also used restricted cubic spline to explore Non-linear correlations. Sensitivity analysis using unweighted logistic analysis and subgroup analysis were used to demonstrate the stability of the results. Results A total of 34,699 participants were eligible for analysis.Compared to the participants without CHD, the participants with CHD showed lower levels of CDAI. After adjusting confounding factors in the multivariate weighted logistic regression model, CDAI was inversely associated with CHD (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 0.65 (0.51–0.82, P < 0.001). Restricted cubic spline showed that there was a negative non-linear correlation (L-shaped) between CDAI and CHD, suggesting a potential saturation effect at higher CDAI levels, with the inflection point of 0.16. Sensitivity analysis showed that the results were stable. No significant statistically interaction was showed in subgroup analysis. Conclusions There was a negative non-linear correlation between CDAI and CHD in US adults. However, further prospective studies are still needed to reveal their relationship.

Abstract:Aim The association between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and hypertension remains unknown. Our study was to investigate the association of CDAI with hypertension in general adults. Methods A total of 21 526 participants were enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The CDAI was calculated from the intake of six dietary antioxidants. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to explore the associations between CDAI and the prevalence of hypertension. Non-linear correlations were explored using restricted cubic splines. And the inflection point was determined by the two-piecewise linear regression. Results In the multivariate logistic regression model with full adjustment for confounding variables, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of CDAI associating with hypertension was 0.98 (0.97-1.00; P = .016). Besides, compared to the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of CDAI was associated with a lower risk of hypertension (0.81 [0.70-0.94]; P = .006). Furthermore, a linear association was found by restricted cubic spline, with 3.4 being the turning point. Conclusion Our study highlighted a negative linear association between CDAI and hypertension in general adults.

Abstract:Background and aims: Epidemiological evidence of the association between migraines, severe headaches, and hypertension is contradictory. Hypertension is a critical risk factor for car-diovascular diseases. Migraine is a common neurological disease and a major cause of disability worldwide. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between migraine, severe head-aches, and hypertension among US adults.Methods and results: Cross-sectional data from 5716 subjects were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2004. Weighted logistic regression models investigated the association between migraines, severe headaches, and hypertension. In total, 5716 subjects were enrolled in the present study, of whom 1134 (19.8%) had migraine or severe headaches. Participants with migraine were predominantly younger females and had a higher body mass index (BMI), lower educational level, lower dietary intake of potassium and calcium, lower serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), creatinine, and hemoglobin, as well as a higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (all P < 0.05). After fully adjusting for potential confounders, migraine or severe headaches were positively associated with hypertension (OR 1.25, 95% CI: 1.03-1.53).Conclusion: Our study found a positive association between migraine, severe headaches, and hy-pertension. An L-shaped association between composite dietary antioxidant index and stroke: Evidence from NHANES 2011-2020

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Antioxidant diets are considered to be protective factors against stroke. However, comprehensive measurement and evaluation of antioxidant diets are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and stroke in adults.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 data, multivariate logistic regression, smoothing curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis were used to explore the relationship between CDAI and stroke. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to assess the stability of this association within the population.RESULTS: Among 12,922 U.S. adults, there was a significant negative correlation between CDAI and the prevalence of stroke. In the fully adjusted model, the risk of stroke was reduced by 4 % for each 1-unit increase in CDAI (OR [95% CI] = 0.96 [0.93, 0.99]). Participants in the highest quartile of the CDAI had a 37 % lower risk of stroke than those in the lowest quartile (OR [95% CI] = 0.63 [0.47, 0.84]). This negative correlation remained stable across subgroups. Furthermore, the study revealed an L-shaped association between CDAI and stroke through smoothing curve fitting. The threshold effect analysis further identified the inflection point as -1.55.CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed an L-shaped relationship between CDAI and stroke. Keeping CDAI in the proper range may help prevent stroke in the general population.

Abstract:Abstract Background Low back pain is the leading cause of productivity loss, imposes a significant economic burden on the patients and society. Oxidative stress is considered a critical factor in the complex pathophysiological process and pathogenic mechanism of low back pain. Adjustment dietary pattern can effectively increase antioxidant biomarkers levels within the body to reduce oxidative stress. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) serves a reliable scoring system for quantifying the potential dietary antioxidant capacity of daily diets. Objective We aim to investigate the potential association between CDAI and low back pain, in order to enhance the management of low back pain through dietary guidance. Methods This study included 17,682 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2000, 2001–2002, 2003–2004 and 2009–2010. The weighted logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between CDAI and low back pain, while restricted cubic spline (RCS) was employed to examine non-linear trend and cutoffs. Results After adjusting for all confounders, the results showed that there was no significant association between CDAI and low back pain. However, individuals in the highest quartile of CDAI exhibited an 11.7% less likelihood of experiencing a low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.883; 95% CI [0.787,0.991], P = 0.034), and the trend test was also significant (P for trend < 0.001). RCS indicated a linear relationship between CDAI and low back pain (P for non-linear = 0.876). Gender subgroup analysis showed that this negative association was significant in the female population (OR = 0.983; 95% CI [0.968, 0.998], P = 0.027), and females in the highest quartile of CDAI were 19.7% less likely to suffer low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.803; 95% CI [0.682,0.945], P = 0.008). Additionally, the changes in zinc (OR = 1.009; 95% CI [1.002, 1.016], P = 0.015) and selenium (OR = 0.379; 95% CI [0.164, 0.875], P = 0.023) per milligram were independently associated with low back pain. Conclusion The fully adjusted model showed no significant association between CDAI and low back pain, but it was significant in quartiles. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis by gender revealed a negative association between CDAI and low back pain in the female population. Additionally, the findings of this study also suggested that the antioxidant diets should be studied in a dietary pattern context.

Abstract:The association between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia. The data used in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset spanning from 2005 to 2020. Based on 24-h dietary recall interviews, the CDAI was calculated using the intake of six dietary antioxidants. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were employed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and the occurrence of hyperlipidemia. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was utilized to investigate potential non-linear relationships between the CDAI and risk of hyperlipidemia. The final analysis included 30,788 adults in the United States, among whom 25,525 (82.91%) were diagnosed with hyperlipidemia. A significant negative correlation was observed between the CDAI and hyperlipidemia in the unadjusted (Odds ratio [OR] 0.97 [95% CI 0.96, 0.98]) and multi-variable adjusted (OR 0.98 [95% CI 0.97, 0.99]) models. When the CDAI values were analyzed as a categorical variable, individuals in the highest quartile (OR 0.82 [95% CI 0.73, 0.92]) exhibited a nearly one fifth decreased risk of hyperlipidemia compared to those in the lowest quartile. Additionally, RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia ( P for nonlinearity = 0.124). The results remained consistent across subgroups except for individuals under the age of 60 or those with diabetes mellitus. There was a significant negative correlation between the CDAI and risk of hyperlipidemia, indicating that maintaining an optimal CDAI level could effectively reduce the incidence of hyperlipidemia.

Abstract:Background: Migraine is implicated in oxidative stress. The oxidative balance score (OBS) assesses the combined impact of diet and lifestyle on oxidative and antioxidant balance in diseases. However, the association between OBS and migraine remains underexplored. Objective: We aimed to examine the relationship between OBS and severe headaches or migraines among American adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004, defining severe headaches or migraine via self-reports and calculating OBS from 16 diaries and 4 lifestyle factors. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models were used to explore the OBS-migraine relationship, with stratified analysis for result validation. Results: The study included 6,653 participants (average age 45.6, 52.1% male), and 19.1% reported severe headaches or migraines. There was a significant inverse association between OBS and severe headache or migraine, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 0.97 (95% [confidence interval] CI: 0.96, 0.98, p < 0.001). The highest OBS tertile had an adjusted OR of 0.58 (95% CI: 0.47, 0.73) compared to the lowest. This pattern was consistent across sexes, with an adjusted OR of 0.98 (0.95, 1.00) in males and 0.97 (0.95, 1.00) in females. The adjusted OR for migraine was 0.61 (0.44, 0.87) and 0.54 (0.37, 0.79) in the highest tertile for males and females, respectively.

Abstract:Background Growing evidence has shown that the antioxidant diet is a protective factor against depression. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), an important measure of antioxidant diet, and depression has received little attention. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between CDAI and depression through a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. Methods The association between CDAI and depression was investigated using a weighted multiple logistic regression model with subgroup analysis. Non-linear correlations were explored using fitted smoothing curves. And we used a recursive method to figure out the turning point and build a weighted two-piece linear regression model. Results In the multivariate logistic regression model with full adjustment for confounding variables, the ORs (95% CI) for the association between CDAI and depression were 0.83 (0.78, 0.88). Moreover, a non-linear association was found, with 0.16 being the inflection point. Before the inflection point, each unit increase in CDAI was associated with a 30% decrease in the risk of depression. After the inflection point, the risk of depression was found to be reduced by 11% for each unit increase. None of the interactions in all subgroup analyses were statistically significant. Conclusions Our study highlighted a negative non-linear association between CDAI and depression in a nationally representative sample of US adults. Further clinical and basic research is needed to explore their association better.

Association between dietary caffeine intake and severe headache or migraine in US adults

Abstract:The relationship between current dietary caffeine intake and severe headache or migraine is controversial. Therefore, we investigated the association between dietary caffeine intake and severe headaches or migraines among American adults. This cross-sectional study included 8993 adults (aged ≥ 20 years) with a dietary caffeine intake from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of America from 1999 to 2004. Covariates, including age, race/ethnicity, body mass index, poverty-income ratio, educational level, marital status, hypertension, cancer, energy intake, protein intake, calcium intake, magnesium intake, iron intake, sodium intake, alcohol status, smoking status, and triglycerides, were adjusted in multivariate logistic regression models. In US adults, after adjusting for potential confounders, a 100 mg/day increase in dietary caffeine intake was associated with a 5% increase in the prevalence of severe headache or migraine (odds ratio [OR] 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.07). Further, the prevalence of severe headache or migraine was 42% higher with caffeine intake of ≥ 400 mg/day than with caffeine intake of ≥ 0 to < 40 mg/day (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.16-1.75). Conclusively, dietary caffeine intake is positively associated with severe headaches or migraines in US adults.

Association Between Dietary Inflammation Index and Cataract: a Population-Based Study from NHANES 2005–2008

Abstract:ImportanceVarious studies have widely explored the association between index of dietary inflammation (DII) and occurrence of diseases. Accumulating evidence have revealed that a lower DII seems to be protective against a variety of diseases. Nevertheless, the association between DII and age-related cataract remains unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate the correlation between DII and age-related cataract in a representative sample of the American population.Design, setting, and participantsThis cross-sectional population-based study comprised 6,395 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in cycles from 2005 to 2008. DII was calculated using dietary recall information, with higher scores indicating greater inflammatory potential of the diet. Age-related cataract was evaluated using cataract surgery as a surrogate measure. Covariates included sociodemographic factors, lifestyle factors, physical measures, and comorbidities. Logistic regression models were employed to assess the association between DII and cataract. The presence of a non-linear relationship was examined using restricted cubic spline analysis. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore potential interaction effects. Data analysis was performed from September 1 to December 30, 2022.Main outcomes and measuresAge-related cataract assessed through cataract surgery information obtained from a self-reported questionnaire.ResultsA total of 6,395 participants were included, with a mean (standard deviation, SD) age of 48.7 (15.3) years. Of these, 3,115 (48.7%) were male, 3,333 (52.1%) were non-Hispanic white, and 683 (10.7%) had cataract. The mean (SD) DII was −4.78 (1.74). After adjusting for all included covariates, DII showed a positive association with cataract, both as a continuous variable (odds ratio (OR): 1.054, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.007–1.103, p = 0.023) and in quartiles, with the highest quartile compared to the lowest (OR: 1.555, 95% CI: 1.233–1.967, p < 0.001). Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed no evidence of a non-linear relationship (p for non-linearity 0.085). Subgroup analysis indicated no interaction effects among the studied covariates.Conclusions and relevanceThese findings suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet serves as a risk factor for the occurrence of cataracts.

Abstract:Biological Research For Nursing, Ahead of Print. Introduction: To explore the relationship between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and gout to provide support for preventing gout through dietary intervention. Methods: Eligible participants from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey aged 20 years and older were included in this cross-sectional study. The weighted chi-square test was used to compare the categorical variables difference between CDAI quartiles groups. The weighted univariate and binary logistic regression analysis were used to test the association between variables and gout. The weighted multivariable logistic regression was used to test the association of CDAI and gout in 4 different models. Subgroup analysis on the associations of CDAI with gout was conducted with stratified factors. Results: The final participants were 26,117, 13,103 (50.17%) were female, 8718 (33.38%) were 40–59 years, 11,200 (42.88%) were white and 1232 (4.72%) had gout. After adjusting for all covariates, the CDAI was associated with gout (odds ratio (OR), .97; 95% CI: .95–1.00). Participants in the highest CDAI quantile group were at low risk of gout (odds ratio (OR), .65; 95% CI: .50–.84) versus those in the lowest quantile group. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed no significant dependence on diabetes mellitus (DM), marital status, alcohol status, hypertension, poverty income ratio (PIR), education level, body mass index (BMI), smoke status, age, sex, race, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) on this association (all p for interaction >.05). Conclusions: Composite dietary antioxidant index was inversely associated with gout in US adults, and dietary antioxidant intervention might be a promising method in the therapy of gout and greater emphasis should be placed on zinc, selenium, carotenoids, vitamins A, C, and E.

Abstract:Background: There is a growing acknowledgment of the potential influence of antioxidative effects resulting from dietary decisions on the occurrence of stroke. The objective of this study was to elucidate the correlation between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and the incidence of stroke in the general population of the United States. Methods: We gathered cross-sectional data encompassing 40,320 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning the years 1999 to 2018. Employing weighted multivariate logistic regression, we assessed the correlation between CDAI and stroke, while also investigating potential nonlinear relationships through restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. Further, the intake of CDAI components were then incorporated into a predictive nomogram model, subsequently evaluated for its discriminatory prowess in stroke risk assessment using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: Post-adjustment for confounding variables, we found that higher CDAI score were associated with a decreased risk of stroke, the odds ratio (OR) [95% CI] of CDAI associating with prevalence was 0.96 [0.94-0.98] (P< 0.001). Moreover, the adjusted OR [95% CI] for stroke across ascending CDAI quartiles stood at 0.90 [0.74-1.09], 0.74 [0.60-0.91], and 0.61 [0.50-0.76] compared to the reference quartile, respectively. The RCS analysis indicated a nonlinear yet negative correlation between CDAI and stroke. The nomogram model, constructed based the intake of antioxidants, exhibited a significant predictive capacity for stroke risk, boasting an area under the curve (AUC) of 77.4% (76.3%–78.5%). Conclusion: Our investigation ascertained a nonlinear negative relationship between CDAI and stroke within the broader American population. However, given the inherent limitations of the cross-sectional design, further comprehensive research is imperative to establish the causative nature of this association.

Abstract:Dietary antioxidants have been found to improve various diseases, including digestive, cardiovascular, and urinary disorders. However, the relationship between CDAI and constipation remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the potential link between CDAI and constipation among adults in the United States. This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2005 and 2010. Dietary data from the respondents were obtained through two 24-hour dietary recall interviews. Multiple statistical methods, including multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting analysis, were used to explore the association between CDAI and chronic constipation. A total of 10,904 participants were included in the study, of whom 1,184 were identified as having chronic constipation. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that higher CDAI was significantly associated with a lower risk of constipation (OR = 0.958 [0.929, 0.987]). Compared to the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of CDAI was associated with a significantly reduced prevalence of constipation (OR = 0.704 [0.535, 0.927]). Subgroup analysis indicated that differences in gender, alcohol intake, and smoking status might influence the association between CDAI and constipation. Smooth curve analysis revealed an "n" shaped relationship between CDAI and constipation among non-alcohol consumers, with a turning point at a CDAI value of 1.08. An elevated CDAI is negatively correlated with the incidence of chronic constipation, suggesting that increasing dietary antioxidant intake may reduce constipation prevalence. These findings underscore the importance of dietary antioxidants in maintaining gut health and provide comprehensive guidance for clinical and public health practices.

Abstract:Objectives: We conducted the current systematic review to investigate the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and severe headaches or migraine among adults via synthesizing observational evidence. Method: We conducted a systematic literature search of observational studies through PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from inception until July 2024. The PECO framework was implemented to select eligible studies as follows: Population (adults with severe headache or migraine), Exposure (individuals with the highest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet), Comparison (individuals with the lowest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet), Outcome (risk of developing severe headache or migraine, headaches frequency, duration, severity, and migraine-related disability). Results: After reviewing six studies involving 31,958 individuals, we found that following an anti-inflammatory diet is associated with a lower frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Additionally, our research revealed that individuals with migraines tend to have lower adherence to an anti-inflammatory diet when compared to people without migraines. Surprisingly, adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet was linked to a reduced risk of chronic daily headaches. Conclusion: Present findings imply a negative link between an inflammatory diet and severe headaches or migraine. However, further well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to interpret the causality and shed light on the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Objectives : There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets protect against chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), an important measure of an antioxidant diet, and CKD has received little attention. Therefore, here we investigated the relationship between the CDAI and CKD through a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2018 data. Methods : The CDAI was calculated based on the intake of six dietary antioxidants. A survey-based multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to analyze the independent relationship between the CDAI and CKD. Weighted multivariate regression and subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between the CDAI and CKD. Results : A total of 6874 NHANES participants represented 181.9 million non-institutionalized US residents (mean age, 46.43 ± 0.38 years; 49.87% female; 40.62% non-Hispanic white; 20.24% non-Hispanic black; and 13.94% Mexican American). The weighted linear regression model with full adjustment for confounding variables was −0.0155 (−0.0417, 0.0107) for Q2 ( P for trend <0.0001), −0.0052 (−0.0346, 0.0242) for Q3 ( P for trend <0.0001), and −0.0305 (−0.0491, −0.0120) for Q4 ( P for trend = 0.0094) upon comparison with the lowest quartile of the CDAI. None of the interactions in any subgroup analysis were statistically significant except for individuals with a history of diabetes or the aged population (≥60 years) ( P for interaction <0.05). Conclusions : The CDAI was positively associated with a lower prevalence of CKD in adults in the United States. Further large-scale prospective studies are required to analyze the role of the CDAI in CKD.
