Abstract:The adsorption of single colloidal microparticles (0.5--1 $\mu$m radius) at a water-oil interface has been recently studied experimentally using digital holographic microscopy [Kaz \textit{et al., Nat. Mater.}, 2012, \textbf{11}, 138--142]. An initially fast adsorption dynamics driven by capillary forces is followed by an unexpectedly slow relaxation to equilibrium that is logarithmic in time and can span hours or days. The slow relaxation kinetics has been attributed to the presence of surface "defects" with nanoscale dimensions (1--5\,nm) that induce multiple metastable configurations of the contact line perimeter. A kinetic model considering thermally activated transitions between such metastable configurations has been proposed [Colosqui \textit{et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.}, 2013, \textbf{111}, 028302] to predict both the relaxation rate and the crossover point to the slow logarithmic regime. However, the adsorption dynamics observed experimentally before the crossover point has remained unstudied. In this work, we propose a Langevin model that is able to describe the entire adsorption process of single colloidal particles by considering metastable states produced by surface defects and thermal motion of the particle and liquid interface. Invoking the fluctuation dissipation theorem, we introduce a drag term that considers significant dissipative forces induced by thermal fluctuations of the liquid interface. Langevin dynamics simulations based on the proposed adsorption model yield close agreement with experimental observations for different microparticles, capturing the crossover from (fast) capillary driven dynamics to (slow) thermally activated kinetics.

The surface diffusivity of nanoparticles physically adsorbed at a solid-liquid interface

Abstract:This work proposes an analytical model considering the effects of hydrodynamic drag and kinetic barriers induced by liquid solvation forces to predict the translational diffusivity of a nanoparticle on an adsorbing surface. Small nanoparticles physically adsorbed to a well-wetted surface can retain significant in-plane mobility through thermally activated stick-slip motion, which can result in surface diffusivities comparable to the bulk diffusivity due to free-space Brownian motion. Theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations in this work show that the surface diffusivity is enhanced when (i) the Hamaker constant is smaller than a critical value prescribed by the interfacial surface energy and particle dimensions, and (ii) the nanoparticle is adsorbed at specific metastable separations of molecular dimensions away from the wall. Understanding and controlling this phenomenon can have significant implications for technical applications involving mass, charge, or energy transport by nanomaterials dispersed in liquids under micro/nanoscale confinement, such as membrane-based separation and ultrafiltration, surface electrochemistry and catalysis, and interfacial self-assembly.

Abstract:Using fluorescence microscopy we study the adsorption of single latex microparticles at a water/water interface between demixing aqueous solutions of polymers, generally known as a water-in-water emulsion. Similar microparticles at the interface between molecular liquids have exhibited an extremely slow relaxation preventing the observation of expected equilibrium states. This phenomenon has been attributed to "long-lived" metastable states caused by significant energy barriers $\Delta{\cal F}\sim \gamma A_d\gg k_B T$ induced by high interfacial tension ($\gamma \sim 10^{-2}$ N/m) and nanoscale surface defects with characteristic areas $A_d \simeq$ 10--30 nm$^2$. For the studied water/water interface with ultra-low surface tension ($\gamma \sim 10^{-4}$ N/m) we are able to characterize the entire adsorption process and observe equilibrium states prescribed by a single equilibrium contact angle independent of the particle size. Notably, we observe crossovers from fast initial dynamics to slower kinetic regimes analytically predicted for large surface defects ($A_d \simeq$ 500 nm$^2$). Moreover, particle trajectories reveal a position-independent damping coefficient that is unexpected given the large viscosity contrast between phases. These observations are attributed to the remarkably diffuse nature of the water/water interface and the adsorption and entanglement of polymer chains in the semidilute solutions. This work offers some first insights on the adsorption dynamics/kinetics of microparticles at water/water interfaces in bio-colloidal systems.
Universal Scaling of Correlated Diffusion in Colloidal Monolayers

Abstract:Using the techniques of optical microscopy and particle tracking, we measure the correlated diffusion in a monolayer of uniform silica spheres dispersed at a water-air interface. It is found that the correlated motion of the interfacial particles can be well described by two universal response functions, the normalized longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients D(∥)(r/r0) and D(⊥)(r/r0), where r is the interparticle distance and r0=a(λS/a)(3/2) is a new scaling length, which depends on both the Saffman length λS and particle radius a. The obtained response functions characterize the crossover behavior of the colloidal monolayers from the subphase-dominated three-dimensional hydrodynamics at low surface coverage to the monolayer-dominated 2D hydrodynamics at high concentrations. The surface viscosity ηs(2) of the colloidal monolayer obtained by two-particle rheology compares well with the one-particle measurements.

Physiol. 222(5): 1091-1099. 1972. -The role of the pituitary and thyroid glands in the regulation of hepatic transport and metabolism of bilirubin in Sprague-Dawley rats was investigated with continuous bilirubin infusion and bile collection for estimation of cumulative hepatic uptake and maximal hepatic excretion of bilirubin in vivo and determination of glucuronyltransferase activity in vitro. Maximal hepatic excretion of bilirubin was Ibeduced to 40y0 of normal by 7-l 1 days after hypophysectomy and 34-36 days after thyroidectomy. Both the volume of bile secreted and the maximal concentration of bilirubin in bile were reduced. Cumulative hepatic uptake of bilirubin was probably unaffected by hypophysectomy, but may have been reduced by thyroidectomy. L-Thyroxine alone was capable of correcting the bilirubin transport defects in both groups of animals. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) also corrected the defect in hypophysectomized rats. Defective glucuronyltransferase activity was observed only when ortho-aminophenol (OAP) served as the glucuronid r e eceptor in vitro. Bilirubin glucuronide formation was either normal or increased following hypophysectomy or thyroidectomy. L-Thyroxine administration returned glucuronyltransferase activity to normal. Other hormones were without effect.

Abstract:Explicit molecular dynamics simulations were applied to a pair of amorphous silica nanoparticles in aqueous solution, with diameter of 4.4 nm and with four different background electrolyte concentrations, to extract the mean force acting between the two silica nanoparticles. Dependences of the interparticle forces on the separation and the background electrolyte concentration were demonstrated. The nature of the interaction of the counterions with charged silica surface sites (deprotonated silanols) was investigated. A "patchy" double layer of adsorbed sodium counterions was observed. Dependences of the interparticle potential of mean force on the separation and the background electrolyte concentration were demonstrated. Direct evidence of the solvation forces is presented in terms of changes of the water ordering at the surfaces of the isolated and double nanoparticles. The nature of the interaction of the counterions with charged silica surface sites (deprotonated silanols) was investigated in terms of quantifying the effects of the number of water molecules separately inside each pair of nanoparticles by defining an impermeability measure. A direct correlation was found between the impermeability (related to the silica surface "hairiness") and the disruption of water ordering. Differences in the impermeability between the two nanoparticles are attributed to differences in the calculated electric dipole moment.

Abstract:Colloidal dispersions are prized as model systems to understand basic properties of materials, and are central to a wide range of industries from cosmetics to foods to agrichemicals. Among the key developments in using colloids to address challenges in condensed matter is to resolve the particle coordinates in 3D, allowing a level of analysis usually only possible in computer simulation. However in amorphous materials, relating mechanical properties to microscopic structure remains problematic. This makes it rather hard to understand, for example, mechanical failure. Here we address this challenge by studying the contacts and the forces between particles, as well as their positions. To do so, we use a colloidal model system (an emulsion) in which the interparticle forces and local stress can be linked to the microscopic structure. We demonstrate the potential of our method to reveal insights into the failure mechanisms of soft amorphous solids by determining local stress in a colloidal gel. In particular, we identify `force chains' of load-bearing droplets, and local stress anisotropy, and investigate their connection with locally rigid packings of the droplets.

Abstract:Recently, colloids with an off-center fluorescent core and homogeneous composition have been developed to measure the rotational diffusivity of microparticles using 3D confocal microscopy in refractive index-matched suspensions. Here, we show that the same particles may be imaged using a standard fluorescence microscope to yield their rotational diffusion coefficients. Trajectories of the off-center core may be combined with known expressions for the correlation decay of particle orientations to determine an effective rotational diffusivity. For sedimented particles, we also find the rotational diffusivity about axes perpendicular and parallel to the interface by adding some bright field illumination and simultaneously tracking both the core and the particle. Trajectories for particles of different sizes yield excellent agreement with hydrodynamic models of rotational diffusion near flat walls, taking the sedimentation–diffusion equilibrium into account. Finally, we explore the rotational diffusivity of particles in crowded two-dimensional monolayers, finding a different reduction of the rotational motion about the two axes depending on the colloidal microstructure.

Microparticle Brownian Motion near an Air-Water Interface Governed by Direction-Dependent Boundary Conditions

Abstract:Although the dynamics of colloids in the vicinity of a solid interface has been widely characterized in the past, experimental studies of Brownian diffusion close to an air-water interface are rare and limited to particle-interface gap distances larger than the particle size. At the still unexplored lower distances, the dynamics is expected to be extremely sensitive to boundary conditions at the air-water interface. There, ad hoc experiments would provide a quantitative validation of predictions. Using a specially designed dual wave interferometric setup, the 3D dynamics of 9 micrometers diameter particles at a few hundreds of nanometers from an air-water interface is here measured in thermal equilibrium. Intriguingly, while the measured dynamics parallel to the interface approaches expected predictions for slip boundary conditions, the Brownian motion normal to the interface is very close to the predictions for no-slip boundary conditions. These puzzling results are rationalized considering current models of incompressible interfacial flow and deepened developing an ad hoc model which considers the contribution of tiny concentrations of surface active particles at the interface. We argue that such condition governs the particle dynamics in a large spectrum of systems ranging from biofilm formation to flotation process.

Abstract:The dynamics of active colloids is very sensitive to the presence of boundaries and interfaces which therefore can be used to control their motion. Here we analyze the dynamics of active colloids adsorbed at a fluid-fluid interface. By using a mesoscopic numerical approach which relies on an approximated numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation, we show that when adsorbed at a fluid interface, an active colloid experiences a net torque even in the absence of a viscosity contrast between the two adjacent fluids. In particular, we study the dependence of this torque on the contact angle of the colloid with the fluid-fluid interface and on its surface properties. We rationalize our results via an approximate approach which accounts for the appearance of a local friction coefficient. By providing insight into the dynamics of active colloids adsorbed at fluid interfaces, our results are relevant for two-dimensional self assembly and emulsion stabilization by means of active colloids.

Nanoscale Surfactant Transport: Bridging Molecular and Continuum Models

Abstract:Surfactant transport is central to a diverse range of natural phenomena, and for many practical applications in physics and engineering. Surprisingly, this process remains relatively poorly understood at the molecular scale. This study investigates the mechanism behind the transport of surfactant monolayers on flat and curved liquid vapor interfaces using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, which are compared with the continuum transport model. This approach not only provides fresh molecular level insight into surfactant dynamics, but also confirms the nanoscale mechanism of the lateral migration of surfactant molecules along a thin film that continuously deforms as surfactants spread. By connecting the continuum model where the long wave approximations prevail, to the molecular details where such approximations break down, we establish that the transport equation preserves substantial accuracy in capturing the underlying physics. Moreover, the relative importance of the different mechanisms of the transport process are identified. Consequently, we derive a novel, exact molecular equation for surfactant transport along a deforming surface. Finally, our findings demonstrate that the spreading of surfactants at the molecular scale adheres to expected scaling laws and aligns well with experimental observations.

Abstract:We present a new class of sequential adsorption models in which the adsorbing particles reach the surface following an inclined direction (shadow models). Capillary electrophoresis, adsorption in the presence of a shear or on an inclined substrate are physical manifestations of these models. Numerical simulations are carried out to show how the new adsorption mechanisms are responsible for the formation of more ordered adsorbed layers and have important implications in the kinetics, in particular modifying the jamming limit.

Diffusivity and Hydrodynamic Drag of Nanoparticles at a Vapor-liquid Interface

Abstract:Measurements of the surface diffusivity of colloidal spheres translating along a vapor/liquid inter- face show an unexpected decrease in diffusivity, or increase in surface drag (from the Stokes-Einstein relation) when the particles situate further into the vapor phase. However, direct measurements of the surface drag from the colloid velocity due to an external force find the expected decrease with deeper immersion into the vapor. The paradoxical drag increase observed in diffusion experiments has been attributed to the attachment of the fluid interface to heterogeneities on the colloid surface, which causes the interface, in response to thermal fluctuations, to either jump or remain pinned, creating added drag. We have performed molecular dynamics simulations of the diffusivity and force experiments for a nanoparticle with a rough surface at a vapor/liquid interface to examine the effect of contact line fluctuations. The drag calculated from both experiments agree and decrease as the particle positions further into the vapor. The surface drag is smaller than the bulk liquid drag due to the partial submersion into the liquid, and the finite thickness of the interfacial zone relative to the nanoparticle size. Contact line fluctuations do not give rise to an anomalous increase in drag.

Diffusiophoretic transport of colloids in porous media

Abstract:Understanding how colloids move in crowded environments is key for gaining control over their transport in applications such as drug delivery, filtration, contaminant/microplastic remediation and agriculture. The classical models of colloid transport in porous media rely on geometric characteristics of the medium, and hydrodynamic/non-hydrodynamic equilibrium interactions to predict their behavior. However, chemical gradients are ubiquitous in these environments and can lead to the non-equilibrium diffusiophoretic migration of colloids. Here, combining microfluidic experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical modeling we demonstrate that diffusiophoresis leads to significant macroscopic changes in the dispersion of colloids in porous media. We displace a suspension of colloids dispersed in a background salt solution with a higher/lower salinity solution and monitor the removal of the colloids from the medium. While mixing weakens the solute gradients, leading to the diffusiophoretic velocities that are orders of magnitude weaker than the background fluid flow, we show that the cross-streamline migration of colloids changes their macroscopic transit time and dispersion through the medium by an order of magnitude compared to the control case with no salinity gradients. Our observations demonstrate that solute gradients modulate the influence of geometric disorder on the transport, pointing to the need for revisiting the classical models of colloid transport in porous media to obtain predictive models for technological, medical, and environmental applications.

Observation of Brownian elastohydrodynamic forces acting on confined soft colloids

Abstract:Confined motions in complex environments are ubiquitous in microbiology. These situations invariably involve the intricate coupling between fluid flow, soft boundaries, surface forces and fluctuations. In the present study, such a coupling is investigated using a novel method combining holographic microscopy and advanced statistical inference. Specifically, the Brownian motion of softmicrometric oil droplets near rigid walls is quantitatively analyzed. All the key statistical observables are reconstructed with high precision, allowing for nanoscale resolution of local mobilities and femtonewton inference of conservative or non-conservative forces. Strikingly, the analysis reveals the existence of a novel, transient, but large, soft Brownian force. The latter might be of crucial importance for microbiological and nanophysical transport, target finding or chemical reactions in crowded environments, and hence the whole life machinery.

Abstract:The mechanism of diffusing diffusivity predicts that, in environments where the diffusivity changes gradually, the displacement distribution becomes non-Gaussian, even though the mean-square displacement grows linearly with time. Here, we report single-particle tracking measurements of the diffusion of colloidal spheres near a planar substrate. Because the local effective diffusivity is known, we have been able to carry out a direct test of this mechanism for diffusion in inhomogeneous media.

On the V-type asteroids outside the Vesta family. I. Interplay of nonlinear secular resonances and the Yarkovsky effect: the cases of 956 Elisa and 809 Lundia

Abstract:Among the largest objects in the main belt, asteroid 4 Vesta is unique in showing a basaltic crust. It is also the biggest member of the Vesta family, which is supposed to originate from a large cratering event about 1 Gyr ago (Marzari et al. 1996). Most of the members of the Vesta family for which a spectral classification is available show a V-type spectra. Before the discovery of 1459 Magnya (Lazzaro et al. 2000) and of several V-type NEA (Xu 1995), all the known V-type asteroids were members of the Vesta family. Recently two V-type asteroids, 809 Lundia and 956 Elisa, (Florczak et al. 2002) have been discovered well outside the limits of the family, near the Flora family. We currently know 22 V-type asteroids outside the family, in the inner asteroid belt. In this work we investigate the possibility that these objects are former family members that migrated to their current positions via the interplay of Yarkovsky effect and nonlinear secular resonances. The main dynamical feature of 956 Elisa and 809 Lundia is that they are currently inside the 2(g-g6)+s-s6 (z2 by Milani and Knezevic, 1993) secular resonance. Our investigations show that members of the Vesta dynamical family may drift in three-body and weak secular resonances until they are captured in the strong z2 secular resonance. Only asteroids with diameters larger than 16 km can remain in one of the three-body or secular resonances long enough to reach the region of the z2 resonance. This two-step mechanism of capture into the z2 resonance could explain: i) the current resonant orbits of 956 Elisa and 809 Lundia, ii) why their size is significantly larger than that of the typical member of the Vesta family, and iii) provide a lower limit on the Vesta family age.

Equilibrium and kinetic models for colloid release under transient solution chemistry conditions

Abstract:We present continuum models to describe colloid release in the subsurface during transient physicochemical conditions. Our modeling approach relates the amount of colloid release to changes in the fraction of the solid surface area that contributes to retention. Equilibrium, kinetic, equilibrium and kinetic, and two-site kinetic models were developed to describe various rates of colloid release. These models were subsequently applied to experimental colloid release datasets to investigate the influence of variations in ionic strength (IS), pH, cation exchange, colloid size, and water velocity on release. Various combinations of equilibrium and/or kinetic release models were needed to describe the experimental data depending on the transient conditions and colloid type. Release of Escherichia coli D21g was promoted by a decrease in solution IS and an increase in pH, similar to expected trends for a reduction in the secondary minimum and nanoscale chemical heterogeneity. The retention and release of 20nm carboxyl modified latex nanoparticles (NPs) were demonstrated to be more sensitive to the presence of Ca(2+) than D21g. Specifically, retention of NPs was greater than D21g in the presence of 2mM CaCl2 solution, and release of NPs only occurred after exchange of Ca(2+) by Na(+) and then a reduction in the solution IS. These findings highlight the limitations of conventional interaction energy calculations to describe colloid retention and release, and point to the need to consider other interactions (e.g., Born, steric, and/or hydration forces) and/or nanoscale heterogeneity. Temporal changes in the water velocity did not have a large influence on the release of D21g for the examined conditions. This insensitivity was likely due to factors that reduce the applied hydrodynamic torque and/or increase the resisting adhesive torque; e.g., macroscopic roughness and grain-grain contacts. Our analysis and models improve our understanding and ability to describe the amounts and rates of colloid release and indicate that episodic colloid transport is expected under transient physicochemical conditions.

Abstract:We have measured the interaction forces versus distance between pairs of 2-mum diameter polystyrene spheres immersed in electrolytes containing up to 1 M KCl. A reproducible long-range repulsion was observed for concentrations below 0.01 M. Adhesion varied considerably from measurement to measurement (values ranged from 3.5 to 140 nN) and showed no systematic trend as a function of electrolyte strength. Data for repulsion in 0.001 M KCl are well fitted by a simple result based on the Derjaguin approximation and the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This fit yields a surface potential (psi0) of 87 mV and a Debye length of 7.7 +/- 0.1 nm, in reasonable agreement with the expected Debye length (9.5 nm) and the measured zeta potential (83 +/- 2 mV). A full numerical solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation shows that the simple theory works reasonably in these conditions, despite the fact that psi0/k(B)T > 1. Measurements made in pure water and measurements of the interaction between a sphere and a mice surface gave results that varied from run to run, none of which agreed with theoretical calculations.
