Abstract:This study examined age-related differences in functional learning performance manifested among children, adolescents, and young adults placed in a two-cue ecology involving cues with direct relation and inverse relations with the criterion. On each trial, participants were instructed to consider the values taken by two cues, predict from these two values the value of a criterion, and finally examine the corresponding feedback value (i.e., the correct value of the criterion for this situation). The authors' hypotheses were that: (a) very few children under 11 years of age would be able to learn how to use the inverse relation cue for predicting the criterion, although they would be able to correctly use the direct relation cue; (b) most adolescents and young adults over 17 years of age would be able to learn how to use the inverse relation cue and combine it with the direct relation cue; and (c) adolescents between 11 and 17 years of age would show various levels of achievement. In general, these predictions were confirmed. Not until 11 years was a substantial proportion of participants (23%) able to reject the direct relation hypothesis and select the inverse relation hypothesis during learning.

Abstract:Executive function (EF), its importance for scholastic achievement and the question of whether or not EF is malleable, have become a topic of intense interest. Education or schooling is often seen as effective approaches to enhance EF due to the specific school-related requirements as compared to kindergarten or pre-school. However, no study to date has investigated whether targeted training focusing on those domains might be comparable with regular schooling in improving EF and fluid intelligence (Gf). The aim of the present study was to replicate and extend the previously demonstrated schooling effects on EF by using a school-cutoff design, and to further investigate whether a theoretically motivated intervention targeting specific EF, i.e., working memory (WM) or inhibitory control (IC), could achieve comparable effects with schooling in both, WM and IC, as well as Gf. 91 6-year-old kindergarteners and first-graders with similar chronological age participated the study. We compared the performance of a first-grade schooling group with that of two kindergarten training groups as well as a business-as-usual kindergarten control group. Participants were assessed in WM, IC and Gf at baseline, immediately after the intervention (posttest), as well as 3 months after training completion (follow-up). The results showed that the schooling group indeed outperformed the kindergarten groups at baseline in several cognitive tasks. Furthermore, both the WM and IC training showed pronounced gains in the trained tasks, as well as varying degrees of improvement in non-trained outcome measures. Most importantly, both training groups achieved comparable performance with the schooling group, which was especially apparent in Gf at follow-up. Our findings provide further evidence for the malleability of EF demonstrating that both, long-term and short-term interventions can facilitate the acquisition of those important skills, and as such, our work has important implications for educational practice.

Abstract:Résumé Cette recherche analyse les habiletés en littéracie émergente et en lecture de la cohorte d'enfants scolarisés en CP de l'Étude longitudinale française depuis l'enfance (ELFE). L'objectif est double : (1) faire un état des lieux des profils d'apprentis-lecteurs ( n = 14 470) ; (2) examiner les relations entre les dispositifs d'aide et les performances en littéracie ( n = 1705). Deux dimensions reliées sont mises en évidence, le langage oral (LO : segmentation phonémique et compréhension orale) et le langage écrit (LE : lecture de mots et compréhension écrite). L'hétérogénéité des performances se manifeste par l'existence de quatre profils d'apprentis-lecteurs : avec (LO– ; LE–) ou sans difficultés en LE et en LO (LO+ ; LE+), deux groupes aux profils inverses avec soit des difficultés en LE (LO+ ; LE–), soit des difficultés en LO (LO– ; LE+). Les enfants les plus faibles dans ces deux dimensions bénéficient de dispositifs d'aide, notamment au sein de l'école. Néanmoins, tous les enfants en difficultés de LE n'en bénéficient pas. La discussion souligne l'intérêt de l'évaluation et de la prévention des difficultés en lecture par les psychologues de l'Éducation nationale. This research analyzes the emergent literacy and reading skills of a cohort of children in grade 1 in the French longitudinal study from childhood (ELFE). The aim is twofold: (1) to describe of novice readers' profiles ( n = 14 470); and (2) to examine the relationships between the adapted designs and literacy performance ( n = 1705). Two related areas are highlighted, oral language (OL: phonological awareness and oral comprehension) and written language (WL: word reading and reading comprehension). The heterogeneity of performance is demonstrated through four profiles in beginning readers: with (OL–; WL–) or without difficulties in WL and in OL (OL+; WL+), two groups with opposite profiles with either difficulties in WL (OL+; WL–), or difficulties in OL (OL–; WL+). The weakest children in the two areas benefit from aid designs, particularly in schools. However, not all children in WL difficulties benefit from a support design. The discussion highlights the value of evaluation and prevention of reading difficulties by educational psychologists.

Distinct functional connectivity patterns during naturalistic learning by adolescent first versus second language speakers

Abstract:Spoken lessons (lectures) are commonly used in schools as a medium for conveying educational content. In adolescence, experience-expectant maturation of language and cognitive systems supports learning; however, little is known about whether or how learners' language experiences interact with this integration process during learning. We examined functional connectivity using fMRI in 38 Spanish–English bilingual (L1-Spanish) and English monolingual (L1-English) adolescents during a naturalistic science video lesson in English. Seed analyses including the left inferior frontal gyrus (pars opercularis) and posterior middle temporal gyrus showed that L1-Spanish adolescents, when learning in their second language (L2), displayed widespread bilateral functional connectivity throughout the cortex while L1-English adolescents displayed mostly left-lateralized connectivity with core language regions over the course of the science lesson. Furthermore, we identified functional seed connectivity associated with better learning outcomes for adolescents with diverse language backgrounds. Importantly, functional connectivity patterns in L1-Spanish adolescents while learning in English also correlate with their Spanish cloze reading. Findings suggest that functional networks associated with higher-order language processing and cognitive control are differentially engaged for L1 vs. L2 speakers while learning new information through spoken language.

Abstract:There are several considerations to address when conducting functional communication training for challenging behavior in a school setting, such as the need for schedule thinning and maintenance across staff and the need to establish a variety of appropriate classroom skills. There are several strategies for conducting schedule thinning following functional communication training and for transferring effects across people or settings. However, there are few examples of these processes in natural settings with relevant caregivers and with long‐term maintenance of effects. We implemented a functional assessment and skill‐based treatment process with six children with autism in a specialized school setting and extended treatment until challenging behavior was reduced to near‐zero levels across multiple staff and settings. Follow‐up data indicate that effects were still observed 1 year posttreatment and the use of crisis procedures (e.g., physical restraint) was eliminated for all participants.

Exploring learner profiles among low-educated adults in second-chance education: individual differences in quantity and quality of learning motivation and learning strategies

Abstract:Research on learning strategies and learning motivation in different educational contexts has provided valuable insights, but in this field, low-educated adults remain an understudied population. This study addresses this gap by means of a person-oriented approach and seeks to investigate whether quantitatively and qualitatively different learner profiles can be distinguished among low-educated adults in second-chance education (SCE) by relating three key components of learning: learning motivation, regulation and processing strategies. Five hundred twelve adult learners of six SCE-institutions filled in a Learning and Motivation questionnaire. Latent profile analysis showed the presence of motivational profiles differing both in quantity and quality (i.e. good- versus poor-quality and high- versus low-quantity motivational profiles) and regulatory profiles being distinct in the use of regulation strategies (i.e. self-regulated versus unregulated profiles). Mainly quantitatively different processing profiles were found among low-educated adults (i.e. active, moderate, inactive processing profiles). When integrating all three components of learning, analyses identified two more optimal motivational-learning profiles, combining good-quality motivation with a moderately active use of self-regulation and processing strategies (i.e. good-quality motivation – self-regulated – active processing profile and good-quality motivation – moderate profile) and two more suboptimal profiles in which poor-quality or low-quantity motivation was combined with the inactive use of self-regulation and processing strategies (i.e. poor-quality motivation – unregulated – inactive processing profile, low-quantity motivation – unregulated – inactive processing profile). A fifth motivational-learning profile exhibited a pattern of poor-quality motivation combined with a moderately-active use of self- regulation and processing strategies.

Abstract:An adolescent female with multiple handicaps and a long history of severely disruptive behavior participated in a functional assessment linked directly to specific revisions in her school curriculum. During Phase 1, reversal designs were used to test hypotheses pertaining to antecedent and curricular influences on problem behavior. During Phase 2, a multiple baseline across afternoon and morning time periods demonstrated that the curricular revisions were effective in eliminating severely disruptive behavior and increasing on-task responding. Data also showed that inappropriate "psychotic" speech was reduced and appropriate social interactions were increased. Follow-up results showed that the changes were maintained throughout the school year. Questionnaire data provided social validation of the procedures and outcomes. The findings are discussed in relation to their implications for functional assessment, individualized curricula, and positive programming for students with disabilities and serious behavior problems.

Abstract:Adolescence is a time during which we transition to independence, explore new activities and begin pursuit of major life goals. Goal-directed learning, in which we learn to perform actions that enable us to obtain desired outcomes, is central to many of these processes. Currently, our understanding of goal-directed learning in adolescence is itself in a state of transition, with the scientific community grappling with inconsistent results. When we examine metrics of goal-directed learning through the second decade of life, we find that many studies agree there are steady gains in performance in the teenage years, but others report that adolescent goal-directed learning is already adult-like, and some find adolescents can outperform adults. To explain the current variability in results, sophisticated experimental designs are being applied to test learning in different contexts. There is also increasing recognition that individuals of different ages and in different states will draw on different neurocognitive systems to support goal-directed learning. Through adoption of more nuanced approaches, we can be better prepared to recognize and harness adolescent strengths and to decipher the purpose (or goals) of adolescence itself.

Distentangling the systems contributing to changes in learning during adolescence

Abstract:Multiple neurocognitive systems contribute simultaneously to learning. For example, dopamine and basal ganglia (BG) systems are thought to support reinforcement learning (RL) by incrementally updating the value of choices, while the prefrontal cortex (PFC) contributes different computations, such as actively maintaining precise information in working memory (WM). It is commonly thought that WM and PFC show more protracted development than RL and BG systems, yet their contributions are rarely assessed in tandem. Here, we used a simple learning task to test how RL and WM contribute to changes in learning across adolescence. We tested 187 subjects ages 8 to 17 and 53 adults (25-30). Participants learned stimulus-action associations from feedback; the learning load was varied to be within or exceed WM capacity. Participants age 8-12 learned slower than participants age 13-17, and were more sensitive to load. We used computational modeling to estimate subjects' use of WM and RL processes. Surprisingly, we found more protracted changes in RL than WM during development. RL learning rate increased with age until age 18 and WM parameters showed more subtle, gender- and puberty-dependent changes early in adolescence. These results can inform education and intervention strategies based on the developmental science of learning.
Learner Autonomy and Playful Learning: Students' Experience of a Gamified Application for French as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Learner autonomy is a central theme in foreign language learning (FLL) research and is encouraged by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In Norway, the national curriculum for foreign languages also emphasises the importance of taking charge of one's own learning. Games and gamification are perceived as ways to foster and develop learner autonomy in FLL classes. However, only a few studies have researched these assumptions in practice. The present study investigates the emergence of learner autonomy in relation to the use of a gamified application for a French-as-a-foreign-language course. The application was developed and implemented for a whole school year in a second-year class of a Norwegian upper-secondary school. Interview data, the data log, and observation data were collected to analyse the students' use of the application in practice. The study shows that the application supports the emergence of learner autonomy. The students take control of the learning activity and create their own learning paths. These results are promising for the use of gamification in FLL contexts. The structure of the gamified application provides a frame within which students could develop their learner autonomy and participate in the collaborative dimension of learning.

A Case Study of 21st Century Cognitive, Social and Emotional Competencies Using Online-Learning

Abstract:Based on the conceptualisation of the 21st Century Competencies Framework from the Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) we developed an online program to enable school-age students to increase their level on several social-emotional competencies. BE organized is a program that aims to help students to better organize themselves to be more efficient in today's and tomorrow's world. To do so, 12 individual sessions were designed to develop 4 out of the twelve 21st century competencies: Critical Thinking, Mindfulness, Resilience and Metacognition; collective sessions (action lab) to develop others such as Creativity. We used a mixed methodology, i.e., quantitative (two questionnaires) and qualitative (reflective questions) evaluation to test whether the targeted competencies have been developed during this program. Preliminary results (since it involves only a small number of participants, n = 27) partially confirm our hypotheses. Both qualitative and quantitative data show a development of critical thinking; the cross-sectional results are more mixed for the other three targeted competencies. Moreover, some other competencies, such as Creativity and Growth Mindset, seem to be developed during this program. However, it is difficult to determine whether it is the group and/or individual sessions that are responsible for these non-targeted competencies development. These results will be discussed in relation to the youth literature on 21st century competency and the broader literature on socio-emotional learning (SEL) and/or emotional intelligence (EI).

Abstract:The introduction of serious games as pedagogical supports in the field of education is a process gaining in popularity amongst the teaching community. This article creates a link between the integration of new pedagogical solutions in first-year primary class and the fundamental research on the motivation of the players/learners, detailing an experiment based on a game specifically developed, named QCM. QCM considers the learning worksheets issued from the Freinet pedagogy using various gameplay mechanisms. The main contribution of QCM in relation to more traditional games is the dissociation of immersion mechanisms, in order to improve the understanding of the user experience. This game also contains a system of gameplay metrics, the analysis of which shows a relative increase in the motivation of students using QCM instead of paper worksheets, while revealing large differences in students behavior in conjunction with the mechanisms of gamification employed. Learners' perceptions of the pedagogical relations in a flexible language learning system

Abstract:The flexible language learning system we have devised at our university combines different elements: individual work on a virtual learning environment, pair-work and counseling sessions. The implementation of the system involves a new conception of the different “actors’’ roles. Teachers become tutors or counselors with new specific pedagogical goals, and learners have a new role to play too. From the creation of the system five years ago, our research has studied a cohort of 610 students. The article focuses on the last two cohorts of students, for whom two important changes in the guidance elements present in the system were introduced. It discusses students’ perceptions of the roles played by the different actors in the system, as compared with traditional language teaching/learning situations. Possible implications for future cohorts of students at our university, as well as for other students working in learning systems of the same kind, are drawn.

Abstract:While the study of the linguistic landscape (LL) is emerging in various domains of inquiry (Gorter 2006; Spolsky, this volume) such as ecology, literacy research, sociocultural studies, urban sociology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and linguistic anthropology (Shohamy and Waksman, this volume), it has heretofore not drawn much attention in the field of education. This is somewhat paradoxical since the study of linguistic landscape traces its roots to research conducted with youth and work on literacy, both areas of primary interest in education. Foundational work cited in studies of the LL (e.g., in Cenoz and Gorter 2006) was conducted in psycholinguistic research on adolescents’ responses to signs in their environment (Landry and Bourhis 1997) and in studies of readers’ interactions with print in contexts of diversity (Scollon and Scollon 2003). While much recent work has concentrated on documenting what print appears in particular geographic locations and on articulating an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, relatively few studies of the linguistic landscape have continued to examine interactions with text in different languages among young readers and writers. Our own work takes up Scollon and Scollon’s (2003) exploration of actors’ interactions with print and Landry and Bourhis’s (1997) line of research with youth who have contact with more than one language. It also draws also on a rich field of inquiry on environmental print established in French urban sociolinguistics (Bulot 1998; Calvet 1994; Lucci et al. 1998). Adopting an educational perspective, we focus on elementary school children to document their literacy practices in activities examining multilingualism and language diversity in their communities. Abstract:This paper analyses the framing and expression of French high school students' aspirations. It sheds new light on the inequalities in tracking between academic versus technological and vocational track. Through the analysis of a national survey and a corpus of cover letters written by applicants for a sociology degree, it shows that, due to the lack of means, teachers mainly have two types of guidance support strategies.Teachers use to target and concentrate their supporting on ``good students'' in vocational tracks, while, in academic tracks, they delegate some steps of the tracking procedures to families. These different strategies have effects on the way high school students internalise school prescriptions and restitute them in cover letters. Through the close support they benefit from teachers, ``good students'' in vocational tracks strongly internalise the instructions and their place in the school hierarchy. In academic tracks, students' expression of the aspirations is much more dependent of their familial capital.
Functional Skills among Preschool Children with Cerebral Palsy – Assessment before and after Early Intervention

Abstract:Objective: To assess and evaluate the change in functional skills among children with cerebral palsy (CP) who participated in an intensified habilitation program.Methods: In this prospective longitudinal study, a cohort of 39 preschool children (2–5 years) with cerebral palsy (Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I–V) together with their parents participated in an intensified multidimensional habilitation program for 1 year. Activities strengthening functional skills were among the main interventions. The children were evaluated with the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory before and after the program period.Results: Only children at GMFCS levels I–II showed improvements in mobility and social function on norm-referenced scales. After the intervention period, these children scored similar to the mean for typically developing children of the same age on the social function domain.Conclusions: Functional skills among preschool children with CP, GMFCS levels I–II, seems strengthened after participation in an intensified habilitation program.

Learning habits of students with special needs in short‐term vocational education programmes

Abstract:This research examined some characteristics of the learning habits of students with special needs and those without them in programmes of short‐term vocational education in five areas: motivation, learning and learning techniques, emotional, social and the area of self‐evaluation. The research sample consisted of 140 students from different secondary schools. The Questionnaire on the Learning Habits of Adolescents was used for the purpose of the study. The differences between the means from individual learning habit scales, between the students with special needs or without them, were discovered by one‐way analysis of variance. Basic findings of empirical research emphasise that there exist statistically significant differences between the students with special needs and the students without special needs in four areas of learning habits. Among the findings causing concern in connection with learning habits, we would like to underscore the fact that students with special needs are perceived as less efficient at and less competent in coping with learning and work tasks. These students are not familiar with effective methods and strategies for successful learning, which leads to the feelings of frustration and helplessness in case of failure. In order to cultivate an effective and supportive educational environment for students with special needs, short‐term vocational schools should develop learning/teaching models that provide a potentially powerful alternative to traditionally directed teaching approaches.

Abstract:OTJR: Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, Ahead of Print. The concept of functional cognition has been variously defined, but at its core relates to how cognitive and performance abilities are integrated and used in everyday life. Functional cognition is a fundamental element of occupational performance, and functional cognitive assessment and intervention are central to how occupational therapy can improve client outcomes. Attendees at a conference convened by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation identified areas where the construct of functional cognition required further clarification. This paper briefly reviews these issues setting the stage for further conceptual analysis. The paper also examines the practical challenges that must be addressed before functional cognitive assessment and intervention can be fully integrated into occupational therapy practitioners' professional practice. In this regard, the present study sets out to explore the multilingual practices of Algerian EFL learners in digital environments, taking students at Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-Ouzou as a case in point. The study targets three main objectives. First, it attempts to scrutinise the participants’ use of different languages to fulfil different communicative functions. Second, it seeks to bring to light their motives for making choices among their linguistic repertoire. Third, it delves into the utilization of English as a foreign language within virtual environments. This case study draws on a theoretical framework of the sociology of language choice from a functional specialisation perspective (Jacobson, 1960; Halliday et al., 1964; Appel & Muysken, 2005). To this end, the mixed-methods research is adopted. A questionnaire was designed to collect data, which were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques and interpretive analysis. Findings highlight participants’ subconscious language choice across different situations, indicating the transfer of their face-to-face communication skills to virtual contexts. Additionally, the findings suggest that social media platforms have a beneficial effect on the adoption of English within digital learning settings.

Abstract:Functional literacy is an important skill that can be developed in a second language classroom at secondary and high school. This article introduces a functional literacy program of advanced training for teachers of foreign languages. The author used axiological, personal-activity, and interdisciplinary approaches with non-participant observation methods and pedagogical modeling to analyze legal norms, school standards, and foreign and domestic publications. The program offers a single school-university track represented as a course of professional training for teachers of foreign languages at the Siberian Institute of Management, Novosibirsk. Teachers of foreign languages donated their teaching and learning experience in preparing students for state exams in foreign languages and functional literacy development. The study revealed some gaps in the academic standardization, advanced training for teachers, and methodological support for Second Language at school. The author identified vectors of prospective development in the field of functional literacy as school, as well as the reasons behind the passive attitude of most school teachers to functional literacy development. Advanced training in this sphere should be compulsory and interdisciplinary. The connection between functional literacy, state exam diagnostics, and teachers’ competences is of exceptional importance in Russian education and requires more continuity.
