Abstract:In this paper, a high-precision ultra-broadband quadrature signal generator for millimeter-wave frequency band is proposed. The structure of cascade directional couplers is adopted, and the transmission line and equivalent lumped model are used to connect couplers. The proposed structure and the transmission line and lumped model are analyzed using the S-parameter matrix, and the corresponding theoretical formulas are provided. The simulation prototype is constructed using the 28 nm CMOS technology, so it can be integrated into a small area chip. In the frequency range of 50-150 GHz, the measured S11 and S22 of the proposed design are both less than -10 dB, while the gain mismatch is less than 1 dB, and the phase mismatch is fewer than five degrees. Compared to the traditional quarter wavelength directional coupler, the proposed generator can guarantee a high-precision quadrature output signal when the output load changes while reducing the gain and phase mismatches. In the same frequency range, the image rejection ratio is over 20 dB. The whole size of the proposed high-precision ultra-broadband quadrature coupler (HPUBC) is 260 um $\times 450$ um. The proposed designs are verified by 3D electromagnetic simulation.
A Superharmonic Injection based G-band Quadrature VCO in CMOS

Abstract:This paper presents a G-band quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) enabled by a superharmonic injection technique. This technique ensures differential phases at the common mode tail current source nodes of two differential oscillators, which are then enforced to generate quadrature outputs. It achieves a maximum output power of -1.54 dBm with the efficiency of 3.2% and the tuning range (TR) from 149.3 GHz to 152.4 GHz. The measured phase noise (PN) is -91.9 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The IQ outputs are down-converted by an on-chip mixer for phase and amplitude accuracy measurement. The measured I/Q phase mismatch is less than 1.5. and amplitude mismatch of less than 0.33 dB over the operating frequency range. The QVCO is implemented in a 28 nm CMOS process, occupying 0.028 mm(2) chip area.

Abstract:A novel dual-band tandem coupler with an arbitrary coupling coefficient is proposed and experimentally proved in this paper. The coupler consists of a typical tandem coupler and an additional transmission line placed between the two pairs of coupled lines. The coupler has a simple structure and can realize arbitrary coupling coefficients over two designated frequencies. Design equations are derived for designing the parameters of the proposed coupler. A prototype of the proposed coupler which operates at 0.9/1.5 GHz with -6dB coupling coefficient is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured results agree well with the EM simulated results.

Abstract:This letter presents an ultra-broadband passive vector modulator phase shifter applied to a 4-element tranceiver. A compact cascaded three-stage differential coupler with anti-jamming connective mode and orthogonal placement method is presented, which amalgamates the through-path and coupled-path signal to reduce the phase and magnitude error of the wideband I/Q generator. A magnetic coupling enhanced lattice power synthesizer is proposed, which synthesizes I/Q signals for the accurate wideband target phase interpolation. The proposed phase shifter occupies an extraordinary compact chip area (1.6mm-by-0.6mm) in 0.13 mu m CMOS process. Measurement results demonstrates that the proposed phase shifter achieves high precision with maximum RMS phase and magnitude error 3.5 degrees and 0.82dB, respectively, in the range of 3-16GHz. In addition, simulated IP1dB is as high as +19dBm with no power consumption.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of the flat RF transmit coils, a quadrature coil is designed. The structure is optimized to achieve the best efficiency while the RF magnetic field is kept homogeneous in the imaging volume and drops off quickly outside the imaging volume. To reduce the loss of the coil, some experiments were carried out to determine the cross-section of conductors and the position of the tuning points. A π-type circuit is used to eliminate the electromagnetic coupling between unit coils. A prototype quadrature coil was constructed for a 0.3 T permanent magnet open MRI system, and the experimental results of the decouple circuit are presented.

Abstract:The rapid development of the next-generation high-speed wireless communication system has set increasingly stringent requirements on the spectral purity of local RF oscillators. Low phase noise is crucial to support advanced modulation scheme enabling high data-rates wireless link [1]. A viable popular approach is to coupled N identical oscillators together to improve the phase noise by 10log <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">10</inf> N at the cost of N times higher power [2]–[6]. Nevertheless, the coupling network needs to be designed carefully to avoid undesired multi-tone concurrent oscillations. Besides, area occupation is another issue of multi-core VCOs. The star-geometry as shown in Fig. 1. (bottom left), which is simple N times duplication of single core, occupies N times larger area so comes with an area penalty [3]–[5]. To solve this problem, circular geometry is proposed where the passives are merged into a single passive structure and the minimal realizable inductance is reduced while keeping a high Q factor [6]–[7]. In order to further reduce the silicon area, a square-geometry quad-core oscillator with inductor sharing technique is proposed in this paper and it exhibits a compact area of 0.09 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> , which is the smallest quad-core VCO operating at a similar oscillation frequency. The unwanted mode is suppressed by the metal trace that connects the drain node of adjacent cores. Thanks to the proposed square-geometry and inductor sharing technique, the proposed quad-core class-F VCO can further reduce the area occupation. The proposed VCO is fabricated in 65nm CMOS technology. The measured phase noise is -137.2 dB/Hz at 10 MHz offset frequency from a carrier of 19 GHz, which translates to the FoM of 186.1 dBc/Hz.

Abstract:A quadrature oscillator with the negative-resistance compensated transformer couple is presented. Two identical LC sub-harmonic oscillators are cross-coupled by the transformer to generate the quadrature outputs. The transformer also serves as the tail current source filtering network for the sub-harmonic oscillators to improve the phase noise performance. The loss of the transformer is partially compensated by the cross-coupled PMOS pair to overcome the possible undesired harmonic couple and to further improve the phase noise performance. The phase noise performance of the quadrature oscillator is 7dB better than the sub-harmonic oscillator itself by the simulation. The quadrature oscillator has been implemented in 0.25um CMOS process and the measurements show the proposed oscillator could achieve a phase noise of -130dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from 1.13GHz carrier while it only draws an 8.0mA current from the 2.5V power supply. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:We demonstrate a photonic RF Hilbert transformer for broadband microwave in-phase and quadrature-phase generation based on an integrated frequency optical comb, generated using a nonlinear microring resonator based on a CMOS compatible, high-index contrast, doped-silica glass platform. The high quality and large frequency spacing of the comb enables filters with up to 20 taps, allowing us to demonstrate a quadrature filter with more than a 5-octave (3 dB) bandwidth and an almost uniform phase response.

Abstract:This paper reports a triple-coil transformer-coupled quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (TC-QVCO), which inherently provides the quadrature signal without using the noisy active-coupling transistors. The determinate correlation of tank voltages is verified by utilizing the initial state to facilitate the oscillation state analysis. Thus, the TC-QVCO would operate without the oscillation mode ambiguity. Additionally, thanks to the triple-coil transformer coupling, a large source coil aids in achieving in-phase coupling for phase noise (PN) improvement, and the intensified coupling factor benefits reducing the PN and the quadrature phase error simultaneously. Therefore, our TC-QVCO would alleviate the tradeoff between PN and quadrature phase accuracy via using a large and . The proposed QVCO prototyped in 65-nm CMOS exhibits a superior FoM (180.1 to 182.2 dBc/Hz) over a 18.2% frequency tuning range (21.2 to 25.5 GHz), and the estimated quadrature phase error <0.8°.

Abstract:The Compact Pulsed Hadron Source （CPHS） project is a university-based proton accelerator platform （13 MeV,16 kW,50 mA peak current,0.5 ms pulse width at 50 Hz） for multi-disciplinary neutron and proton applications.The CPHS linac consists of a 3 MeV radio-frequency quadrupole （RFQ） linac and a 13 MeV drift tube linac （DTL）.Both the RFQ and DTL share a 325 MHz,2.1 MW klystron source.A single iris-type radio-frequency （RF） coupler is used to feed 537 kW of RF power to the RFQ cavity.Three-dimensional electromagnetic models of the ridge-loaded tapered waveguide （RLWG） and the coupler-cavity system are presented,and the design process and results of the RLWG and iris plate are described in detail.

Abstract:This research presents a new design and fabrication of a quadrature hybrid coupler using π-shaped lumped elements. The proposed π-shaped elements have resulted in ultra-size reduction and harmonic suppression ability simultaneously. The proposed coupler correctly works at 800 MHz, the insertion loss is less than 0.15 dB and more than 26 dB, isolation and return loss are obtained at the operating frequency. The size of the proposed coupler is only 12.8 mm ×12.2 mm, which is equal to 0.046 λg × 0.044 λg, where λg is of the guided-wavelength at 800 MHz. The conventional coupler has a large size of 0.25 λg × 0.25 λg, which is equal to 68.5 mm × 68.5 mm. The proposed coupler provides about 96% size reduction compared to the conventional coupler. Moreover, the proposed quadrature hybrid coupler has wide harmonic suppression from 2.1 GHz to 10 GHz.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel method to produce quadrature local oscillating (LO) signals. By using Symmetrical Inductors and Differential Diodes, the circuit has been integrated into a single chip completely. HSPICE simulation results proves it could generate quadrature LO signals with high phase accuracy and good gain match under low power, good phase noise and small area, thus it could be used in many integrated transceivers.

Abstract:Quadrature VCO is one of the key components in high speed data link.High Q on-chip in-ductance and capacitance integration is a key fact,which highly affects the performance of Voltage Con-trolled Oscillator.In order to fully compact the traditional digital CMOS process,we have designed on-chip inductance and capacitance with ultra-deep submicron digital CMOS process,based on which a capaci-tive coupling quadrature VCO is implemented.According to the simulation,the center frequency of QVCO is 1 6.12GHz,with 10% frequency tuning range,-1 12dBc@ 1MHz phase noise and 0.39°phase error.
A Compact I/Q Network with Center-Tap Coupled Transformer-Based Quadrature Hybrids for Millimeter-Wave Applications

Abstract:In this paper, a compact broadband in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) network is realized based on transformer-based quadrature hybrids. The coupling capacitors of the proposed hybrid locate at the center taps of the transformer. All output ports of the center-tap coupled quadrature hybrid locate at the same side of the transformer, which makes signal path and power routing much easier. Based on the center-tap coupled hybrid, the proposed I/Q network shows a good performance with less area. A lumped-element model of the center-tap coupled quadrature hybrid is also investigated. Based on the 40-nm CMOS process, an I/Q network with 2-stage transformer-based quadrature hybrids is implemented. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed structure achieves an image rejection ratio (IRR) of more than 35 dB from 17 GHz to 31 GHz. Furthermore, the area of the proposed structure is 392*379 um 2 .

Abstract:We developed a 385-500GHz balanced mixer with a waveguide quadrature hybrid coupler. The balanced mixer consists of an RF quadrature hybrid coupler, two double sideband (DSB) SIS mixers with noise temperature of — 60K, and an IF 180 degree hybrid coupler covering 4 8 GHz IF band. An RF quadrature hybrid coupler was designed and fabricated whose fabrication error was within 5gm. The noise temperatures of the balanced mixer was similar to those of two DSB mixers in spite of adding an RF quadrature hybrid and an IF coupler. The required LO power for pumping the balanced mixer was reduced by 42dB on average compared with those for the DSB mixers and -15dB coupler. The sideband noise of the local oscillator (a quintupler + a Gunn oscillator) was measured to be 20K at offset frequency of 4 — 8 GHz, which corresponds to 70K4OV. To authors' knowledge, this is the first direct measurement of LO sideband noise at submillimeter range. If a varistor quintupler degrades the signal-to-noise by 10dB (K. Saini 2003 [11), the sideband noise of a Gunn oscillator is 7K4tW at the offset frequency of 0.8-1.6 GHz.

Abstract:A design and implementation for a 2.4GHz quadrature output frequency synthesizer intended for bluetooth in 0.35μm CMOS technology are presented.A differentially controlled quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator(QVCO) is employed to generate quadrature (I/Q) signals.A second-order loop filter,with a unit gain transconductance amplifier having the performance of a third-order loop filter,is exploited for low cost.The measured spot phase noise is -106.15dBc/Hz@1MHz.Close-in phase noise is less than -70dBc/Hz.The synthesizer consumes 13.5mA under a 3.3V voltage supply.The core size is 1.3mm×0.8mm.

Abstract:This paper describes the physical design, rf measurement, and tuning result of a 325 MHz four-vane radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) with a ramped inter-vane voltage. The 3-meter-long RFQ will accelerate the negative hydrogen ion beam from 50 keV to 3 MeV with a peak current of 5 mA, a pulse width of 10-40 mu s, and a maximum repetition rate of 0.5 Hz. During tuning we reveal that the coupling loop of the coaxial coupler adopted for this RFQ enhances the interference between the dipole field distribution and the coupling coefficient. Therefore, an iteration method is adopted to simultaneously achieve the desired field distribution and coupling coefficient. After tuning, the relative error between the measured field distribution and the designed curve for the operating quadrupole mode is within +/- 2.7%, and the dipole components are about +/- 1.9% of the quadrupole mode. The measured coupling coefficient of the rf power coupler equals 1.03, with the desired value of 1.04.

Abstract:To satisfy the stringent requirements of the emerging wireless communication system, the dual-band operation and reconfigurability are both desired for the front end. However, few works can realize them simultaneously. In addition, the flexibility of the implemented reconfigurability is limited. In this article, a reconfigurable dual-band quadrature coupler with independently tunable characteristics at the lower band is proposed. Based on the investigation of an ideal model, the design requirements to achieve the previous reconfigurability can be obtained. Thus, the coupled line loaded with varactor is proposed on a patch coupler to implement the desired functionality. By varying the voltages applied on the varactors, the frequency and coupling coefficient at the lower band of the proposed coupler can be tuned independently with the characteristics at the upper band fixed. For validation, a prototype was designed, fabricated, and measured. Measured results show that the frequency of the coupler at the lower band can be tuned from 2.9 to 3.2 GHz. Meanwhile, the corresponding coupling coefficient can be tuned from 3 to 10 dB. During the lower band tuning, 3 dB coupling coefficient and quadrature phase difference can be always maintained for upper band, which is fixed at 4.7 GHz.

Abstract:This paper presents an area-efficient frequency synthesizer with a quadrature phase output using a fractional-N injection-locking technique for software-defined radios. A background calibration scheme is proposed to compensate for the PVT variations. Implemented in a 65nm CMOS process, this work demonstrates 10 MHz to 6.6 GHz continuous quadrature frequency coverage, while only occupies a small area of 0.38 mm 2 and consumes 16-26 mW depending on output frequency, from a 1.2 V power supply. The normalized phase noise achieves -135.3 dBc/Hz at 3 MHz offset, and -95.1 dBc/Hz in-band phase noise at 10 kHz offset, from a 1.7 GHz carrier frequency.
