Abstract:Background Transgender women are at high risk of depression and suicidal ideation. The interpersonal theory of suicide proposes that suicidal ideation could be a consequence of high interpersonal needs (thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness). The current study tests this theory and investigates whether depression could mediate the relationship between interpersonal needs and suicidal ideation among transgender women in Shenyang, China. Methods A total of 198 transgender women were recruited by snowball sampling. A cross-sectional study was conducted through a structured questionnaire. Suicidal ideation, depression, and interpersonal needs were assessed. Path analysis was used to carry out the research goals and the mediating effect of depression was tested. Results There were nearly 37% of the participants reported lifetime suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was positively correlated with thwarted belongingness ( t = −5.53, p < 0.01) and perceived burdensomeness ( t = −5.02, p < 0.01). The direct effect from thwarted belongingness to suicidal ideation via depression was statistically significant (Std. β = 0.232, p < 0.01). Depression could also mediate the indirect path from perceived burdensomeness to suicidal ideation through depression (Std. β = 0.222, p < 0.01) although the direct path between them was not significant (Std. β = 0.046, p = 0.693). Conclusions Depression fully mediated the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation, and partially mediate the relationship between thwarted belongingness and suicidal ideation. To reduce the risk of suicidal ideation among transgender women, interventions targeting thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and depression are needed.

Abstract:Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals report high rates of mistreatment in the form of interpersonal stigma. These experiences can negatively impact their mental health. However, few studies have explored this relationship within a Chinese context. This study aims to investigate the connection between various forms of interpersonal stigma and mental health among Chinese TGD individuals. It also seeks to understand the role of collective and personal protective factors in mitigating the effects of interpersonal stigma. This study used explanatory sequential mixed methods, combining primary quantitative research with supplementary qualitative research. A total of 398 Chinese TGD individuals participated in an online questionnaire survey, with seven of these participants also taking part in semi-structured interviews. Of the Chinese TGD participants, 48.7% reported experiencing mild or more severe depressive symptoms, while 42.2% of them reported a low level of well-being status. The interpersonal stigma was found to be positively associated with depression and negatively associated with well-being status. Among the examined protective factors, the interactions of community consciousness and identity pride with the interpersonal stigma aggravated the relationships between the interpersonal stigma and well-being status. The qualitative interviews confirmed the widespread presence of interpersonal stigma and provided additional insights into the exacerbating effects of community consciousness and identity pride. This study highlighted the existence of pervasive interpersonal stigma and its negative impact on the mental health of Chinese TGD individuals. The community consciousness and identity pride should be questioned for the validity of acting as protective factors. Such findings provided evidence for further developing intervention programs and clinical instructions for healthcare providers.

Abstract:Transgender women (TGW) experience serious psychiatric problems and high suicide rates. According to the interpersonal theory of suicide, thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness play major roles in suicidality and can be measured by the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ). However, no study has validated the use of the INQ in TGW. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the INQ among TGW. We recruited 198 TGW (mean age 38.47 years) from Shenyang, China, using snowball sampling. The construct validity of the INQ was assessed through factor analysis, and convergent and divergent validity were examined through a structural equation model with other psychosocial factors. The construct validation analysis supported a three-factor model (perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and social exclusion) with satisfactory fit indices: χ 2 /df = 1.54, RMSEA = 0.052, CFI = 0.931, TLI = 0.916, SRMR = 0.053. The thwarted belongingness was significantly associated with self-esteem and social support, and the social exclusion was significantly associated with loneliness, depression, entrapment, and defeat, suggesting satisfactory convergent and divergent validity for the three-factor model. The present findings indicate that for TGW, high social exclusion is important in assessing perceived interpersonal needs, while the notable deviation from previous two-factor model warrants further study.

Abstract:Objectives: Although sexual minorities have reported higher levels of suicidal ideation than heterosexuals across cultures, the role of various psychosocial factors underlying this disparity among young men has been understudied, particularly in China. This study examined the multiple mediating effects of psychosocial factors between sexual orientation and suicidal ideation in Chinese sexual minority and heterosexual young men. Methods: 302 Chinese cisgender men who identified as gay or bisexual, and 250 cisgender heterosexual men (n=552, aged 18-39 years) completed an online questionnaire measuring perceived social support, self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Results: Young sexual minority men reported significantly higher suicidal ideation and lower social support than their heterosexual peers. Structural equation modelling revealed two multiple indirect pathways. One pathway indicated that sexual orientation was indirectly related to suicidal ideation via family support and depressive symptoms. Another pathway indicated that sexual orientation was indirectly related to suicidal ideation via support from friends, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: This study is among the first to examine the potentially cascading relationships between sexual orientation and psychosocial factors with suicidal ideation in a Chinese sample of young men. The findings highlight several promising psychosocial targets (i.e., improving family/friend support and increasing self-esteem) for suicide interventions among sexual minority males in China.

Abstract:Abstract Background Transgender women have multiple disparities globally, including social rejection and stigma, HIV infection and untreated mental health problems. However, few data on transgender women are available in China. Therefore, this study aimed to explore transgender women’s experiences on gender identity, disclosure, discrimination, transgender-specific medical care, and perceptions of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) risk in China. Methods A qualitative study was conducted in Nanjing and Suzhou city, China in 2018. Key informant interviews ( n = 14) and focus group discussions ( n = 2) with diverse transgender women were implemented. Text was transcribed and translated, and Dedoose TM software was used for coding, analysis and interpretation by the research team. Results Chinese transgender women share experiences with transgender women worldwide, including a long and challenging identity search, stigma and discrimination, poor access to trans-specific services and unmet needs for mental health care. Features unique to them include terms used for self-identification, culturally-shaped expectations for reproduction, and ideals of placing the familial and societal welfare over personal fulfillment. Social networks of this population appear sparse, scattered, and underground. Familial rejection was experienced by nearly all respondents. Perceptions of HIV and STI risk and history of HIV testing were notably low. Conclusions Transgender women in China face high social rejection and discrimination along with unmet need for various types of healthcare. Scaling up transgender-specific services including gender-affirming medical care, mental health care and HIV/STI prevention are warranted to address the social, medical and mental health of transgender women in China.

Intimate Partner Violence Against Women and Its Association with Depression in Three Regions of China: a Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is recognised as a major public health and social problem globally, with consequences for the individual, the family, and society. However, research on IPV in China is scarce. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of different types of violence among Chinese women, determine risk factors, and explore the associations with depression.MethodsWe did a cross-sectional study in six provinces across the three regions of China using a self-completion questionnaire developed for the study. We purposively selected the provincial capital and one rural county in each province. Questionnaires were distributed in hospitals and public places to women aged 18 years and older who had ever been in an intimate relationship. We used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale to measure depression. We used binary logistic regression to analyse risk factors and the associations between violence and depression. Ethical approval was obtained from the Medical Ethics Committee of Zhejiang University, School of Public Health.FindingsFrom July 10 to Sept 3, 2018, 2987 women were enrolled. The prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence was 77·7% (2322), 40·2% (1201), and 11·0% (330), respectively: 52·0% (1553) had experienced two or three types of violence in their life. Risk factors were low education attainment, having one child or more, residence in western provinces, having an income lower than the partner's, and economic pressure. The prevalence of severe depression was 18·3% (425/2322), 23·8% (286/1201), and 39·4% (130/330) in women experiencing psychological, physical and sexual violence, respectively. The odds of severe depression were 6·62 (95% CI 4·49–9·76) for psychological violence, 4·31 (3·39–5·48) for physical violence, and 5·47 (4·01–7·45) sexual violence, after controlling for age, occupation, education attainment, and residence.InterpretationThere is a clear need for measures to raise awareness and prevention of all types of IPV. Abstract:We suggest that Dewey's theory of value formation has implications for the contraposition between individual and social preferences in economics. We re-consider that distinction and introduce, instead, the notions of inclusive and exclusive social preferences. We then apply this distinction to governance forms and suggest an explanatory framework of governance heterogeneity which contrasts exclusive and inclusive governance structures. In the final discussion we illustrate a possible use of the framework for assessing cooperatives and social enterprises as well as traditional corporations. More generally, we argue that the assessment of governance heterogeneity would benefit from a consideration of the type of social preferences underlying formal as well as substantive involvement of publics.
Gender Minority Stressors and Psychological Distress Among Chinese Transgender and Gender Diverse People: Variable-Centered, Person-Centered, and Psychological Network Approaches

Abstract:Mental health disparities in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations call for more research examining gender minority stressors (GMS) as antecedents to their psychological distress, especially for the long-underrepresented groups living in conservative societies towards gender minorities. Furthermore, some questions remain underexamined, including the relative, independent influences of various GMS on TGD people's mental well-being (i.e., uniqueness of each stressor); how these stressors would configurate with each other in distinctive patterns to characterize subgroups of TGD people (i.e., beyond-average heterogeneity); and how these stressors would constitute a psychological network and vary in their centrality in that network (i.e., holistic complexity). To narrow such gaps, we examined the links between GMS and TGD people's psychological distress, using survey data collected in 2023 from 410 Chinese TGD people (Meanage = 22.33 years, SD = 4.27; 306 transgender, 70 non-binary/gender-queer/gender-fluid, 26 agender/gender-neutral, 3 intersex, and 5 others). We approached such links from three perspectives. First, variable-centered analyses indicated that while different GMS were considered simultaneously, internalized transphobia, preoccupation with gender dysphoria, and gender-related victimization were uniquely associated with psychological distress. Second, person-centered analyses yielded a 3-profile solution. Psychological distress varied systematically across profiles. Last, network analyses revealed a 3-cluster structure: Distal, Proximal Internal, and TGD-Specific Stressors. Preoccupation with gender dysphoria was the most central node. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the implications of GMS for TGD people's mental well-being. GMS related to internal struggles with gender identity might be among the central intervention targets to prevent/reduce TGD people's psychological distress.
Problematic Social Media Use and Depressive Outcomes among College Students in China: Observational and Experimental Findings

Abstract:Aims: Problematic social media use is increasing in China and could be a risk factor for depression. We investigated cross-sectional associations between problematic social media use and depressive outcomes among Chinese college students with potential mediation by perceived social support, social media violence, and loneliness. Thereafter, we evaluated the effectiveness of a one-month group counseling intervention in reducing depressive symptoms related to social media addiction. Methods: Depressive symptoms, social media addiction, perceived social support, social media violence, and loneliness were self-reported among 21,000 college students in Shaanxi province, China. A randomized controlled trial was designed based on the results of the observational study and Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST) among 60 college students assigned to intervention (N = 30) or control/no treatment (N = 30). Self-administered surveys were completed at baseline (T1), at the end of the 1-month intervention (T2), and at 2-month follow-up post-intervention (T3). Results: After controlling for relevant covariates, more problematic social media use was associated with more depressive symptoms (β = 0.18, p < 0.001) and depression (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.075, 1.092). Multiple mediation analyses found that perceived social support, social media violence, and loneliness significantly mediated associations between problematic social media use and depressive symptoms (model fit: RMSEA = 0.065, GFI = 0.984, CFI = 0.982). Bootstrapping revealed significant indirect effects of problematic social media use on depressive symptoms through the mediators named above (0.143, 95% CI: 0.133, 0.156). The subsequently informed intervention significantly reduced depressive symptoms at T2 (mean difference: −12.70, 95% CI: −16.64, −8.76, p < 0.001) and at T3 (mean difference: −8.70, 95% CI: −12.60, −4.80, p < 0.001), as well as levels of social media addiction, perceived social support, social media violence, and loneliness. Conclusions: Problematic social media use is a risk factor for depressive outcomes among Chinese college students, and perceived social support, social media violence, and loneliness mediate this association. STST-based group counseling may reduce depressive symptoms related to high social media usage in this population.

Abstract:Perceived discrimination is significantly associated with mental health symptoms among persons living with HIV (PLWH). However, little is known about the factors mediating this relationship. We aimed to examine the mediating role of social isolation and loneliness in the association between perceived discrimination and mental health symptoms among PLWH. A multicenter (Shanghai, Kunming, Nanning, Hengyang, and Changning in China) cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017. Data from 883 PLWH were used for statistical analysis. Perceived discrimination, mental health symptoms, loneliness and social isolation were assessed through self-report questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) showed a satisfactory model fit (CMIN/DF = 2.676, GFI = 0.998, CFI = 0.997, NFI = 0.995, TLI = 0.985, RMSEA = 0.044 [0.000, 0.090]) and a significant total indirect effect (beta = 0.058, SE = 0.009, Z = 6.444, p < 0.01). Both loneliness (beta = 0.042, SE = 0.008, Z = -5.250, p < 0.01) and social isolation (beta = 0.016, SE = 0.004, Z = -4.000, p < 0.01) were determined to be significant mediators of the association between perceived discrimination and mental health symptoms. Interventions that combat loneliness and social isolation may help ameliorate the adverse consequences of perceived discrimination on mental health.
Perceived stress mediates the association between perceived control and emotional distress: The moderating role of psychological resources and sex differences

Abstract:Studies have confirmed that perceived control is strongly negatively correlated with emotional distress. However, few studies have explored whether perceived stress plays a potential mediating role in this relationship and whether the association between perceived stress and emotional distress is moderated by psychological resources, such as self-esteem and social support. Furthermore, it is unclear whether there are sex differences in the moderating effects of psychological resources on emotional distress. A total of 951 healthy adults (51.84% females) from different regions of mainland China participated in the study and completed questionnaires in early December 2022, when prevention and control policies concerning COVID-19 in China underwent rapid change. Perceived control negatively correlated with emotional distress, and perceived stress mediated the association between perceived control and emotional distress. In addition, both internal (i.e., self-esteem) and external psychological resources (i.e., social support) moderated the association between perceived stress and emotional distress, and the positive correlation between perceived stress and emotional distress was higher in individuals with low social support (and self-esteem) than in those with high social support (and self-esteem). We found sex differences in the moderating roles of psychological resources. Specifically, self-esteem had a moderating effect on both men and women, whereas social support had a moderating effect only on women. These findings improve understanding of the relationship between perceived control and emotional distress and suggest that intervention programs should be designed to target men and women differently.

Loneliness and depressive symptoms and the influence of social support and self-esteem among men who have sex with men in China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background While psychosocial problems and their related factors in men who have sex with men (MSM) have been well documented in developed countries, there are still not many studies addressing this issue in China and the results are inconsistent. To describe loneliness and depression among Chinese MSM populations and explore their associated factors, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 655 MSM in Taizhou of Zhejiang Province between April and November, 2021. Methods Sociodemographic and psychosocial data were collected, as well as information on risky sexual behaviors. Bivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations between independent variables and outcomes of loneliness and depression. To assess moderating effects of the factors in the multivariable models for loneliness, interactions between independent variables and depressive symptoms were tested. Results Of the MSM sample, 13.28% and 7.48% perceived loneliness and reported moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms. We found that participants who perceived loneliness were more likely to have younger age (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21, 0.93, 15–32 years as reference group), low social support (OR 3.60, 95% CI 2.14, 6.04), low self-esteem (OR 3.03, 95% CI 1.45, 6.32) and depressive symptoms (OR 5.45, 95% CI 2.66, 11.15). The participants with moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms were more likely to have low self-esteem (OR 6.78, 95% CI 3.08, 14.95) and feelings of loneliness (OR 5.51, 95% CI 2.66, 11.40). The MSM who were young, not married, and had low self-esteem were especially vulnerable to the impact of depressive symptoms on loneliness. Conclusions In China, it is significant to implement intervention programs addressing loneliness and negative emotions for MSM, increase community social support, and destigmatize homosexuality.
The Mental Health and Syndemic Effect on Suicidal Ideation among Migrant Workers in China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: Migrant workers are in a socially disadvantaged position and thus suffer from more stress and mental health disorders, resulting in a high risk of suicidal ideation. This study aimed to explore the association between psychosocial problems and suicidal ideation, and the syndemic effect of concurrent psychosocial problems on suicidal ideation among migrant workers. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and recruited 1805 migrant workers in Shenzhen, China. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire to report sociodemographic information and mental health status. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to explore the association between psychosocial variables and suicidal ideation, and their syndemic effect on suicidal ideation. Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation among migrant workers was 7.5%. All selected psychosocial variables were independently associated with suicidal ideation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that three psychosocial variables were associated with suicidal ideation: anxiety (ORm: 1783, 95% CI: 1.089–2.920), entrapment (ORm: 2.064, 95% CI: 1.257–3.388), and defeat (ORm: 2.572, 95% CI: 1.612–4.103). Various mental health issues can exist simultaneously to increase the risk of suicidal ideation (AOR: 5.762, 95% CI: 3.773–8.802). Workers with more psychosocial problems were more likely to have suicidal ideation. Conclusions: The association between poor mental health and suicidal ideation should not be overlooked among migrant workers. The co-occurring or syndemic effect of psychosocial problems may increase the risk of suicidal ideation.

Providing evidence for intervention measures in the face of a mental health crisis, the present study validates the relation between self-compassion and anxiety and depression mediated by perceived stress amongst medical workers. The goal is also to replicate a similar mediation model though multigroup analysis. Methods: Medical workers were randomly selected to investigate by paper-and-pencil survey among 1,223 medical workers from three hospitals in Shiyan, China. The measures were comprised of four parts: the Chinese version of the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale (GADS), the Self‐Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS-SF), the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Applying structural equation modeling (SEM, single-group analysis), we estimated the effects of self-compassion on anxiety/depression through perceived stress. Furthermore, based on multigroup analysis, we used two sets of internal samples (gender groups, medical groups) and an external sample (nursing students) for testing multigroup invariance. Results: The average scores of anxiety, depression, self-compassion and perceived stress in medical workers were 5.93 ± 2.46, 4.91 ± 2.62, 38.87 ± 4.66 and 71.96 ± 15.14, respectively. In some departments engaged in the research, the medical workers showed higher levels of anxiety and depression. The SEM results indicated that the original relationship between self-compassion and anxiety and depression was beta = – 0.42 ( P < 0.001) and reduced to beta = – 0.17 ( P < 0.001) while introducing perceived stress as a mediating variable. Perceived stress was positively associated with anxiety and depression (beta = 0.60, P < 0.001), and self-compassion was negatively associated with perceived stress (beta = – 0.56, P < 0.001). Multigroup analysis showed acceptable changes in fit indices across gender (male and female), medical (clinician and non-clinician), and population (medical workers and nursing students) groups. Conclusion: Medical workers were experiencing high levels of anxiety and depression and perceived stress. Perceived stress might have a partial mediating effect on self-compassion and anxiety and depression amongst medical workers, which was similar to a previous study in nursing students. The findings supported multigroup invariance across gender, medical and population groups. The study concluded that the mediation model may be generalized across these multiple samples. Psychological intervention could be used to improve levels of self-compassion of medical workers. Psychological Distress and Suicidality Among Transgender Young Adults in the United States

Abstract:Purpose: Transgender young adults (TYA) are burdened by adverse mental health outcomes. Guided by intersectionality and minority stress frameworks, we compared prevalence of psychological distress and suicidality among TYA of different social identities to inform future interventions. Methods: In this secondary data analysis of 12,738 TYA, ages 18-25 years, from the 2015 United States Transgender Survey, we developed multivariable regression models examining associations between social identities and psychological distress and suicidality, adjusting for relevant covariates. Self-reported identities were used as proxies for minority stress resulting from structural oppressions related to gender binarism, transmisogyny, heterosexism, and racism. Results: Overall, 53% met criteria for serious psychological distress, and 66% reported suicidal ideation. Statistically higher odds of serious psychological distress and suicidal ideation and plan were found for TYA assigned male compared to assigned female at birth (adjusted odds ratios [aORs] = 1.14-1.50). Nonbinary TYA assigned male at birth also had lower odds of all outcomes compared to all other TYA (aORs = 0.6-0.7). Compared to White TYA, Latiné/x TYA were more likely to experience serious psychological distress (aOR = 1.19, 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.39) and multiracial TYA were more likely to report suicide plan(s) and attempt(s) (aORs = 1.25-1.30). Finally, compared to heterosexual TYA, bisexual/pansexual TYA were more likely to report suicide plan(s) (aOR = 1.28, 95% confidence intervals: 1.04, 1.52), and all sexual minority TYA were more likely to report serious psychological distress and suicidal ideation (aORs = 1.31-2.00). Discussion: Results highlight complex associations between intersectional minority stress and mental health outcomes among TYA. Associations between identities and mental health morbidity highlight an urgent need for targeted mental health interventions.
Association between enacted stigma, internalized stigma, resilience, and depressive symptoms among young men who have sex with men in China: a moderated mediation model analysis

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background and Objective</h3><p>Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are likely to experience depression due to enacted and internalized stigma. Whether enacted stigma impacts depression through internalized stigma and whether resilience moderate the negative effect are unclear. This study aims to examine a moderated mediation model to explore the role of internalized stigma in mediating the relationship between enacted stigma and depressive symptoms, and whether this relationship is modified by resilience among Chinese YMSM.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Between September 2017 and January 2018, we conducted a baseline survey of a four-year cohort study among MSM in China. An anonymous computer-assisted ("Questionnaire Star") self-interview questionnaire survey was conducted and 346 YMSM were included for analysis. Sociodemographic characteristics, enacted stigma, internalized stigma, resilience, and depressive symptoms were measured. Mediation and moderated mediation model analysis were used to examine the relationships among these variables.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Overall, 38.7% (137) participants reported depressive symptoms. Internalized stigma partly mediated the relationship between enacted stigma and depressive symptoms (β=0.091, <em>P</em><0.01). Moderation mediation analysis found positive moderating role of resilience in the relationship between enacted stigma and internalized stigma (β=-0.026, <em>P</em>=0.019), as well as between enacted stigma and depressive symptoms (β=-0.053, <em>P</em>=0.008). The indirect effects of enacted stigma on depressive symptom through internalized stigma were significant only when resilience was at low (β= 0.191, 95% <em>CI</em>=0.072,0.366) and moderate (β=0.104, 95% CI=0.035,0.220) levels, but not significant when resilience was high (β=0.017, 95% <em>CI</em>=-0.083, 0.140).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Enacted stigma could directly impact depressive symptoms, and internalized stigma partly mediated the relationship between enacted stigma and depressive symptoms. Resilience significantly moderated the association between enacted stigma and depressive symptoms as well as the association between enacted stigma and internalized stigma. Promoting resilience while reducing enacted stigma and internalized stigma may be useful in relieving depressive symptoms among Chinese YMSM.</p>

Sexual Minority Stigma and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Among Sexual Minorities: the Mediating Roles of Sexual Orientation Concealment, Self-Criticism, and Depression

Abstract:Introduction: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), a significant predictor of suicide, is more frequent in sexual minorities (e.g., lesbian, gay, and bisexual) than in heterosexuals. The Minority Stress Model proposed that sexual minority stigma (SMS) may lead to maladaptive behaviors, including NSSI. However, the potential mechanism underlying the relationship between SMS and NSSI remains unclear. Therefore, the current study will examine the relationship between SMS and NSSI, and explore the serial mediating roles of sexual orientation concealment (SOC), self-criticism, and depression. Methods: A total of 666 individuals who self-identified as sexual minorities (64.0% male, M age = 24.49 years, SD = 6.50) completed questionnaires of SMS, SOC, self-criticism, depression, and NSSI, in 2020. Results: The findings indicated that (1) SMS, SOC, self-criticism, depression, and NSSI were positively correlated; (2) SOC, self-criticism, and depression independently played partial mediating roles between SMS and NSSI; and (3) SOC, self-criticism, and depression played serial mediating roles between SMS and NSSI. Conclusions: The current study supported the relation between SMS and NSSI among Chinese sexual minorities, and also implied a potential mechanism underlying the relation. Specifically, SMS was related to increased NSSI by higher SOC, self-criticism, and depression. SOC had dual-edged effects on NSSI. Policy implications: To reduce NSSI and other psychological problems among sexual minorities, policy makers should take more measures to eliminate SMS. Specifically, policy makers are encouraged to provide more support for changing sexual minorities' living environment, such as repealing bills that could cause SMS and popularizing the knowledge about sexual orientation.
Risky or protective? Online social support's impact on NSSI amongst Chinese youth experiencing stressful life events

Abstract:Background: This study was designed to investigate potential gender differences in the interrelations between different types of stressful life events and non-suicidal self injury (NSSI) among Chinese youth, as well as to test the direct and moderating impacts of online social support on Chinese students' NSSI engagement under the pressure of different types of stressful life events. Methods: Based on the data of 2200 students from middle - highschools and universities in Northwestern China, gender difference (male/female binary) in stressful life events, online social support, NSSI and their correlations were analyzed in the study. Results: Among different types of stressful life events, male students were reported to experience a significantly higher impact of punishment and interpersonal relationship than females. Female students only experienced significantly higher learning pressure than males; Gender difference was not indentified in NSSI among youth; Stressful life events related to punishment could significantly predict NSSI engagement among males. Stressful life events related to learning pressures, interpersonal relationships, and adaption were significantly correlated to NSSI engagement among females; Online social support didn't had a significant direct effect on youth's NSSI, although it did significantly moderate the relationship between specific types of stressful life events (i.e., loss, interpersonal relationships, adaption among males and all types among females) and their NSSI. Conclusion: The present study has provided evidence of specified types of stressful life events being risk factors in affecting youth's NSSI: For male students, the higher impacts of stressful life events related to punishment they experienced, the more likely they were about to engage in NSSI. For female students, stressful life events related to learning pressure, interpersonal relationships and adaption were all proved as significant predictors and risky factors of female youth's NSSI; Online social support did not impact on individual's NSSI engagement directly, but moderated it significantly as a protective factor.

Abstract:This study examined the influence of family rejection, social isolation, and loneliness on negative health outcomes among Thai male-to-female transgender adolescents. The sample consisted of 260 male respondents, of whom 129 (49.6%) were self-identified as transgender and 131 (50.4%) were self-identified as cisgender (nontransgender). Initial multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the transgender respondents, when compared to the cisgender respondents, reported significantly higher family rejection, lower social support, higher loneliness, higher depression, lower protective factors (PANSI-positive) and higher negative risk factors (PANSI-negative) related to suicidal behavior, and were less certain in avoiding sexual risk behaviors. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the exogenous variables of family rejection, social isolation, and loneliness were significant predictors of both transgender and cisgender adolescents’ reported levels of depression, suicidal thinking, and sexual risk behaviors. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:ObjectiveSuicidal ideation is an important public health challenge among people living with HIV (PLWH) across the world and in China. HIV stigma, depression, and self-esteem have been associated with suicidal ideation. However, the underlying mechanisms remain not fully understood.MethodsStudy data were derived from a sample of 465 PLWH in China. Suicidal ideation after HIV diagnosis was used as outcome variable. HIV stigma, depressive symptoms, and self-esteem were measured using reliable instruments and used as predictor, mediator, and moderator, respectively. Mediation and moderated mediation model were used for data analysis.Results31.6% of PLWH in China had suicidal ideation after HIV diagnosis. The association between perceived HIV stigma and suicidal ideation was partially mediated by depression (indirect effect = 0.02, 95% CI = [0.02, 0.03]) with the path from perceived HIV stigma to depressive symptoms being moderated by self-esteem (interaction effect = − 0.02, 95% CI [− 0.03, − 0.01]).ConclusionsStudy findings suggested a mediation mechanism of HIV stigma on suicidal ideation through depressive symptoms, and self-esteem might weaken the mediation mechanism by moderating the perceived HIV stigma-depressive symptoms pathway.
