Abstract:The metal intoxication and its associated adverse effects to humans have led to the research for development of water treatment technologies from pollution hazards. Therefore, development of cheaper water remediation technologies is more urgent than ever. Clays and clay minerals are naturally occurring, inexpensive, non-toxic materials possessing interesting chemical and physical properties. As a result of interesting surface properties, these have been developed as efficient absorbent in water remediation. Recently, clay–polymer nanocomposites have provided a cost-effective technological platform for removing contaminants from water. Covering research advancements from past 25 years, this review highlights the developments in clay–polymer nanocomposites and their advanced technical applications are evaluated with respect to the background and issues in remediation of toxic metals and organic compounds from water. The extensive analysis of literature survey of more than two decades suggests that future work need to highlight on advancement of green and cost-effective technologies. The development of understanding of the interaction and exchange between toxin and clay–polymer composites would provide new assembly methods of nanocomposites with functional molecules or nanomaterials need to be extended to increase the detection and extraction limit to parts per trillion.

Abstract:Hydrogels have become one of the potential polymers used with great performance for many issues and can be promoted as biomaterials with highly innovative characteristics and different uses. Gelatin is obtained from collagen, a co-product of the meat industry. Thus, converting wastes such as cartilage, bones, and skins into gelatin would give them added value. Furthermore, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and easy cross-linking with other substances can promote polymers with high performance and low cost for many applications, turning them into sustainable products with high acceptance in society. Gelatin-based hydrogels have been shown to be useful for different applications with important and innovative characteristics. For instance, these hydrogels have been used for biomedical applications such as bone reconstruction or drug delivery. Furthermore, they have also shown substantial performance and important characteristics for remediation for removing pollutants from water, watercourse, and effluents. After its uses, gelatin-based hydrogels can easily biodegrade and, thus, can be sustainably used in the environment. In this study, gelatin was shown to be a potential polymer for hydrogel synthesis with highly renewable and sustainable characteristics and multiple uses.

Abstract:Due to the wonderful property of hydrogels, they can provide a platform for a wide range of applications. Recently, there is a growing research interest in the development of potential hydrogel adsorbents in wastewater treatment due to their adsorption ability toward aqueous pollutants. It is important to prepare such a hydrogel that possesses appropriate robustness, adsorption capacity, and adsorption efficiency to meet the need of water treatment. In order to improve the property of hydrogels, much effort has been made by researchers to modify hydrogels, among which incorporating inorganic components into the polymeric networks is the most common method, which can reduce the product cost and simplify the preparation procedure. Not only can hydrogel be applied as adsorbent, but it also can be used as matrix for catalyst immobilization. In this review, the key advancement on the preparation and modification of hydrogels is discussed, with special emphasis on the introduction of inorganic materials into polymeric networks and consequential changes in the properties of mechanical strength, swelling, and adsorption. Besides, hydrogels used as adsorbents for removal of dyes and inorganic pollutants have been widely explored, but their use for adsorbing emerging contaminants from aqueous solution has not received much attention. Thus, this review is mainly focused on hydrogels' application in removing emerging contaminants by adsorption. Furthermore, hydrogels can be also applied in immobilizing catalysts, such as enzyme and photocatalyst, to remove pollutants completely and avoid secondary pollution, so their progress as catalyst matrix is overviewed.

Abstract:Besides audio fingerprinting techniques there are no essential procedures for a content-based identification of music audio available. But even these techniques rely heavily on statistical information of audio and do not consider any semantics of music. Furthermore, they require each piece of music to be pre-recorded and thus pre-processed for a successful identification. We try to apply the leadsheet-model - a generic model for processing tonal music - on content-based audio identification and show how it can be altered to handle audio. As a result we are capable of identifying music with extremely varying spectra based on only one given template.
Self‐Standing Biohybrid Xerogels Incorporating Nanotubular Clays for Sustainable Removal of Pollutants

Abstract:A scalable and systematic protocol for the preparation of colloidal dispersions and the corresponding hydrogels and xerogels is designed by using natural halloysite nanotubes and chitosan. Xerogels maintain the morphological properties due to the presence of nanoclays. The materials can be exploited for pollutants capture from both aqueous and gas phases, being efficient for environmental remediation. In this work, it is reported a scalable and systematic protocol for the preparation of xerogels based on the use of green, highly available, and low‐cost materials, i.e. halloysite nanoclay and chitosan, without the need for any expensive equipment or operational/energetic demands. Starting from colloidal dispersions, rheological studies demonstrate the formation of hydrogels with zero‐shear viscosities enhanced by ≈9 orders of magnitude and higher storage moduli. Hence, the corresponding self‐standing xerogels are prepared by a simple solvent casting method and their properties depend on the concentration of halloysite, possessing enhanced thermal stability and outstanding mechanical performances (elastic modulus and ultimate elongation of 165 MPa and 43%, respectively). The resulting biohybrid materials can be exploited for environmental remediation. High removal efficiencies are reached for the capture of organic molecules from aqueous media and the CO2 capture from the atmosphere is also investigated. Most importantly, the presence of an inorganic skeleton within the xerogels prevents the structure from collapsing upon drying and it allows for the control over their morphology and shape. Therefore, taking advantage of the overall features, the designed xerogels offer an attractive strategy for sustainably tackling pollution and for environmental remediation in a plethora of different domains.

Abstract:This article provides insights into hydrogels of the most promising biodegradable natural polymers and their mechanisms of degradation, highlighting the different possibilities of controlling hydrogel degradation rates. Since biodegradable hydrogels can be designed as scaffolding materials to mimic the physical and biochemical properties of natural tissues, these hydrogels have found widespread application in the field of tissue engineering and controlled release. In the same manner, their potential as water reservoirs, macro- and microelement carriers, or matrixes for the selective adsorption of pollutants make them excellent candidates for sustainable soil amendment solutions. Accordingly, this article summarizes the recent advances in natural biodegradable hydrogels in the fields of tissue engineering, controlled release, and soil remediation, emphasizing the new opportunities that degradability and its tunability offer for the design and applicability of hydrogels.

Abstract:In recent years, many researchers have focused on designing hydrogels with specific functional groups that exhibit high affinity for various contaminants, such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens, or nutrients, or environmental parameters. Novel approaches, including cross-linking strategies and the use of nanomaterials, have been employed to enhance the structural integrity and performance of the desired hydrogels. The evolution of these hydrogels is further highlighted, with an emphasis on fine-tuning features, including water absorption capacity, environmental pollutant/factor sensing and selectivity, and recyclability. Furthermore, this review investigates the emerging topic of stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, underscoring their potential in both sorption and detection of water pollutants. By critically assessing a wide range of studies, this review not only synthesizes existing knowledge, but also identifies advantages and limitations, and describes future research directions in the field of chemically engineered hydrogels for water purification and monitoring with a low environmental impact as an important resource for chemists and multidisciplinary researchers, leading to improvements in sustainable water management technology.

Abstract:Contaminant removal from water involves various technologies among which adsorption is considered to be simple, effective, economical, and sustainable. In recent years, nanocomposites prepared by combining clay minerals and polymers have emerged as a novel technology for cleaning contaminated water. Here, we provide an overview of various types of clay-polymer nanocomposites focusing on their synthesis processes, characteristics, and possible applications in water treatment. By evaluating various mechanisms and factors involved in the decontamination processes, we demonstrate that the nanocomposites can overcome the limitations of individual polymer and clay components such as poor specificity, pH dependence, particle size sensitivity, and low water wettability. We also discuss different regeneration and wastewater treatment options (e.g., membrane, coagulant, and barrier/columns) using clay-polymer nanocomposites. Finally, we provide an economic analysis of the use of these adsorbents and suggest future research directions.

Abstract:Due to the ever-growing global population, it is necessary to develop highly effective processes that minimize the impact of human activities and consumption on the environment. The levels of organic and inorganic contaminants have rapidly increased in recent years, posing a threat to ecosystems. Removing these toxic pollutants from the environment is a challenging task that requires physical, chemical, and biological methods. An effective solution involves the use of novel engineered materials, such as silica-based nanostructured materials, which exhibit a high removal capacity for various pollutants. The starting materials are also thermally and mechanically stable, allowing for easy design and development at the nanoscale through versatile functionalization procedures, enabling their effective use in pollutant capture. However, improvements concerning mechanical properties or applicability for repeated cycles may be required to refine their structural features. This review focuses on hybrid/composite polymer-silica nanostructured materials. The state of the art in nanomaterial synthesis, different techniques of functionalization, and polymer grafting are described. Furthermore, it explores the application of polymer-modified nanostructured materials for the capture of heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives, drugs, and other organic compounds. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for future research aimed at advancing the application of polymer-silica nanostructured materials in the efficiency of pollutant uptake.

Abstract:A simple method was proposed to prepare a tough and ultra-extensible hydrogel with ultra-fast response to temperature and pH and a high potential to adsorb heavy metals by utilizing poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm), sodium methacrylate (SMA), and the crosslinking process using Laponite RDS clay. Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the distribution of clay in the hydrogels. The hydrogels' exceptional mechanical and tensile qualities are a result of the precise physical crosslinking caused by Laponite RDS clay and the ultra-long polymer chains that were produced because of the selected polymerization conditions. A tiny quantity (1.5 mol%) of SMA co-monomer adds a strong pH response and improves the effectiveness of metal removal, whereas PNIPAm produces clearly defined temperature responsiveness. In the meantime, as the SMA content increased, the equilibrium swelling increased, but when the loading of Laponite RDS clay increased, it decreased. It has been shown that hydrogels can effectively adsorb Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The removal effectiveness and stability of the hydrogels were enhanced by adding SMA, with efficiency values reaching 99.93%. Given their great swelling, mechanical toughness, and high Cr(VI) removal efficiency, the investigated hydrogels appear highly suitable as an adsorbent for water treatment.

Abstract:Hydrogels from biopolymers are readily synthesized, can possess various characteristics for different applications, and have been widely used in biomedicine to help with patient treatments and outcomes. Polysaccharides, polypeptides, and nucleic acids can be produced into hydrogels, each for unique purposes depending on their qualities. Examples of polypeptide hydrogels include collagen, gelatin, and elastin, and polysaccharide hydrogels include alginate, cellulose, and glycosaminoglycan. Many different theories have been formulated to research hydrogels, which include Flory-Rehner theory, Rubber Elasticity Theory, and the calculation of porosity and pore size. All these theories take into consideration enthalpy, entropy, and other thermodynamic variables so that the structure and pore sizes of hydrogels can be formulated. Hydrogels can be fabricated in a straightforward process using a homogeneous mixture of different chemicals, depending on the intended purpose of the gel. Different types of hydrogels exist which include pH-sensitive gels, thermogels, electro-sensitive gels, and light-sensitive gels and each has its unique biomedical applications including structural capabilities, regenerative repair, or drug delivery. Major biopolymer-based hydrogels used for cell delivery include encapsulated skeletal muscle cells, osteochondral muscle cells, and stem cells being delivered to desired locations for tissue regeneration. Some examples of hydrogels used for drug and biomolecule delivery include insulin encapsulated hydrogels and hydrogels that encompass cancer drugs for desired controlled release. This review summarizes these newly developed biopolymer-based hydrogel materials that have been mainly made since 2015 and have shown to work and present more avenues for advanced medical applications.

Abstract:Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are materials with high potential for wastewater treatment. They take out a wide variety of water pollutants being easy their remove after treatment. Currently, there is a growing interest for developing bio-based hydrogels to decrease the use of synthetic polymers. In this work, we prepared bio-based hydrogels from collagen and guar gum (ColGG) for the removal of textile dyes and metal ions. Composite hydrogels were designed incorporating 1 wt% of MgMOF74, CaMOF74, and Zn(Atz)(Py) metal-organic frameworks in the biopolymeric matrix. The hydrogels with MgMOF74 and CaMOF74 increased the storage module of matrix by 324.4 ± 30 and 116.84 ± 10 %, respectively. Further, MOFs decreased the thermal degradation and increased the water uptake capacity of ColGG. MOFs improved the adsorption performance for the removal of mordant brown and direct red from wastewaters. The improvement of the adsorption performance by adding MOFs was more noticeable for the removal of Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions. The basicity of the organic linkers played an important role in the improvement of the adsorption performance and physical properties. Interestingly, hydrogels neutralized the pH of wastewaters during the adsorption operation.

Abstract:Emerging pollutants (EPs) are the contaminants in the environment that have been extensively studied over the past two decades and can include anthropogenic and naturally present chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products and their derivatives, counterfeit drugs, engineered nanomaterials, and antibiotic resistance genes. Unfortunately, the present wastewater treatment technologies fail considerably to remove the EPs from the contaminated aqueous systems. Therefore, increasing attention is paid to clay nanocomposites, especially nanoscale clay-supported zero-valent iron (nZVI) composites, as an attractive remediation material for environmental clean-up. The clays and various clay minerals are plentiful and quite inexpensive. They are being applied as effective sorbents to treat various water pollutants. These minerals with outstanding physicochemical properties can be excellent candidates for supporting the matrix of nZVI. The review's main focus is to highlight the applications of the clay nanocomposites and clay–nZVI composites for the removal of different types of emerging contaminants alone or in combination with heavy metals and to understand the possible reaction mechanism. Further, removing different types of emerging pollutants by the clay–nZVI composites has been elaborated, emphasizing the onsite remediation approaches. Abstract:Aims & Scope: The natural polymers, extracted from the natural products or formed from the biochemical reaction or photosynthesis in natural world, including the polymers derived from plants, such as cellulose, starch, lignin, natural rubber and alginate, etc., the polymers from the animals, including chitin, chitosan, hyaluronic acid and protein, etc., and the polymer from microbial fermentation, such as polylactic acid, polycaprolactone and poly (glutamic acid) etc.. This kind of materials is the precious natural resources endowed by our mother nature. They are inexhaustible in supply and always available for use. By the way, almost all of the natural polymers are biocompatibility, biodegradability and environmental-friendly, and they are widely used in medicinal fields. Hydrogels are crosslinked polymeric networks prepared from hydrophilic polymers, which can absorb and retain high content of water while maintaining their three-dimensional integrity. As the diversified properties of the natural polymers, they are the ideal skeleton for preparation of the hydrogels. The hydrogels prepared from the natural polymers could show interesting stimuli-responsiveness, good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good flexibility similar to natural tissue. Adsorption-based methods are simple, efficient, and broadly used to eliminate heavy metals. Conventional adsorption materials have the problems of secondary environmental contamination. Hydrogels are considered effective adsorbents, and those prepared from biopolymers are biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, safe to handle, and increasingly used to adsorb heavy metal ions.AIM OF REVIEW: The natural origin and easy degradability of biopolymer hydrogels make them potential for development in environmental remediation. Its water absorption capacity enables it to efficiently adsorb various pollutants in the aqueous environment, and its internal pore channels increase the specific surface area for adsorption, which can provide abundant active binding sites for heavy metal ions through chemical modification.KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT OF REVIEW: As the most representative of biopolymer hydrogels, polysaccharide-based hydrogels are diverse, physically and chemically stable, and can undergo complex chemical modifications to enhance their performance, thus exhibiting superior ability to remove contaminants. This review summarizes the preparation methods of hydrogels, followed by a discussion of the main categories and applications of polysaccharide-based biopolymer hydrogels.

Polymer-treated bentonite clay for chemical-resistant geosynthetic clay liners

Abstract:ABSTRACT: The purpose of hydraulic barriers, such as geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), is to isolate waste liquids from the environment. Bentonite clay is widely used in GCLs because of its elevated sealing capacity in the presence of water and its ability to restrict the migration of solutes (chemico-osmotic efficiency or semi-permeable membrane behaviour). However, exposure to high concentrations of inorganic solutions can change the clay fabric increasing its hydraulic conductivity and degrading its membrane behaviour, with a consequent harm to the environment. The aim of this research was to study the hydraulic and chemico-osmotic performance of amended clays. For this purpose, an engineered clay (HYPER clay) was developed through treatment of a natural bentonite with an anionic polymer and the results were compared with two amended clay materials (multi-swellable bentonite (MSB) and a dense prehydrated GCL (DPH GCL)). To demonstrate the potential benefits of polymer treatment, material characterisation through X-ray diffraction analysis, density of solid particles, Atterberg limits, and swelling tests was performed on treated and untreated samples. Subsequently, hydraulic conductivity and chemico-osmotic tests were performed with CaCl 2 solutions on treated and untreated clays, to evaluate the modified clays resistance to chemical attack. The results of this research showed that the present amendment technology has a great potential for future GCL applications. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated the intercalation of the polymer in the interlayer region of the clay inducing a dispersed clay structure. The swell index and the liquid limit of the clay increased with increasing polymer dosage suggesting a potential benefit of the polymer on preserving the hydraulic performance of the clay. Unlike the untreated clay, HYPER clay treatment maintained low hydraulic conductivity of the clay to CaCl 2 even in the long term and protected the clay against the destructive role of diffusion, maintaining the initial osmotic efficiency in the long term. Test results were also compared with other amended clays MSB and DPH GCL. These two amended clay materials displayed a chemico-osmotic behaviour at the steady state similar to that observed on untreated clay. On the other hand, the preservation of the chemico-osmotic efficiency of the HYPER clay with time suggests that the carboxymethyl cellulose was not flushed out during the long period of permeation with deionised water.

Abstract:The current review gives a broad spectrum of hybrid hydrogels with its importance and significance and highlights the strategies of generation of hybrid hydrogels reinforced with nanomaterials, biomaterials, and nanobiocomposites along with their advantages and disadvantages. Advancements in polymers have made significant contribution in diverse application‐oriented fields. The multidisciplinary application of polymers generates a range of strategies, which is applicable in a wide range of biomedicines. Polymeric compounds such as hydrogels have been explored globally as a potent biomaterial that can furnish essential attributes due to their three‐dimensional (3D) soft and highly hydrophilic polymeric network. These hydrogels have been used extensively in various applications due to their biocompatible, biodegradable, and biosorption nature. However, they have some limitations, owing to their soft nature, low mechanical properties, and unsatisfactory degradation profile. Therefore, there is a need to develop novel, stronger, and more durable hybrid hydrogels with enhanced biocompatible and multifunctional properties. The current review gives a broad spectrum of hybrid hydrogels with its importance and significance. Further, the review highlights the strategies of generation of hybrid hydrogels reinforced with nanomaterials, biomaterials, and nanobiocomposites along with their advantages and disadvantages. The review also features various applications of these hybrid hydrogels in the field of biomedicines, photocatalysis, agriculture, and food industry over the last 5 years. This review will give a comprehensive overview to researchers working in the field of hybrid hydrogels development.
