Abstract:On the basis of molecular structure design theory, a novel fluorescent ligand, 6-{3-[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] ureido} picolinic acid(UPA), was designed and synthesized. The hydrogels were prepared by the free radical polymerization with UPA and zwitterionic sulfobetaine(DMA) as monomers, clay as a physical crosslinker. The fluorescent ligand was introduced into the hydrogel structure by UV light curing, and then the lanthanide complex was formed in the hydrogel after Eu3+ or Tb3+ coordination, and a new intelligent rare-earth hybrid hydrogel material with high mechanical strength, good self-healing properties, multiple stimulus responsiveness(temperature, pH, the intensity of ion, etc.) and high luminescence efficiency was constructed, the problems such as poor stability and easy fluorescence quenching in the aqueous phase of rare earth luminescent materials, and poor mechanical properties and single function of traditional hydrogels were solved. It provides a new idea for the preparation of materials in the fields of information security and encryption, biological imaging, fluorescent labeling and so on.

Abstract:Lanthanide-containing nanomaterials have gained significant popularity for their utilization in polymeric networks, enabling the creation of luminescent nanocomposites for advanced applications. In this study, we developed a new type of lanthanide-containing nanocomposite hydrogels by incorporating terbium-containing laponite (Tb 3+ @Lap) into the networks of polyethyleneimine-modified gelatin/polydextran aldehyde (PG/PDA) through dynamic bonds. The structures and properties of the Tb 3+ @Lap-containing nanocomposite double-network (ncDN) hydrogels were comprehensively investigated in comparison with the DN hydrogels with a pure polymeric network and the Lap-containing ncDN hydrogels. The PG/PDA/Tb 3+ @Lap ncDN hydrogels with multiple dynamic bonds (i.e., imine bonds, coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds , and electrostatic interactions) exhibited remarkable characteristics of shear-thinning and self-healing, making them suitable for the construction of hydrogel scaffolds on a macroscale using fabrication techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing. Moreover, the PG/PDA/Tb 3+ @Lap ncDN hydrogels have been demonstrated to act as sensitive and selective luminescent sensors for detecting copper ions. Taken together, a versatile lanthanide-containing ncDN hydrogel platform capable of dynamic features is developed for processing and sensing applications.

Abstract:The fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) with encapsulated europium complexes have recently emerged as one of the most promising luminescent probes for biomedical applications owing to their unique optical properties, biocompatibility and structure designability. Significant progresses have been made for the preparation of biocompatible trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln3+) fluorescent nanoparticles, whereas, only limited attention was focused on the fabrication of europium ion containing FPNs with biodegradability, high sensitivity and deep penetration. In this work, a facile and simple method was developed to construct biodegradable and biocompatible luminescent polyurethanes (PUs) through a two-step polymerization. In this construction system, diisocyanate-terminating polyethylene glycol (NCO-PEG-NCO) was first synthesized and subsequently conjugated with dihydroxyl modified europium (III) chelates (Eu(TTA)3Phen-OH) to obtain these luminescent PUs. These PUs show amphipathic property and can assemble into core-shell FPNs in aqueous solution and exhibit high water dispersibility. Biological evaluation results suggest that Eu(TTA)3Phen-PEG2000 FPNs possess desirable biocompatibility and great potential for biological imaging applications. Therefore, we expect that the fabrication approach will inspire much research enthusiasm and effort for the preparation of biodegradable luminescent probes.
Luminescent Mechanism Analyzing and Metal-Ion Sensing of Eu(III)-organic Ligands Complex Doped Gelatin-Based Films and Hydrogels

Abstract:A series of gelatin-based composite films (gf) were prepared by doping Eu(TTA)3(H2O)2, Eu(TTA)3bipy, or Eu (TTA)3phen respectively into type-E or -B gelatin film substrate. All of B-gf and the E-gf doped Eu(TTA)3phen were realized with red luminescence under 365 nm excitation, while only slight blue luminescence originated from gelatin substrate can be observed in E-gf doped Eu(TTA)3(H2O)2 or Eu(TTA)3bipy. A UV-absorption competition between substrate and dopant was confirmed to decide the luminescent properties of gf. Weaker UV absorption of B-gelatin ensures that Eu(TTA)3, regardless of ancillary ligand, can obtain sufficient excitation energy for luminescence emission. While only Eu(TTA)3phen possesses a strong enough ability to absorb UV against E-gelatin. Based on the optimal matching principle of substrate and dopant, luminescent gelatin-based hydrogel (gh) doped Eu(TTA)3phen was prepared. A 'dual effect' mechanism was proposed for explaining metal-ion sensing applications. Among various metal ions, furthermore, both B and E types of Eu(TTA)3phen@gh exhibited similar significant luminescence quenching for Fe3+ with a detection limit of about 1.15 mu mol/L.

Abstract:Luminescent hydrogels show extensive applications in many fields because of their excellent optical properties. Although there are many matrixes used to prepare luminescent hydrogels, the synthesis of protein-based luminescent hydrogels is still urgently needed to explore due to their good biodegradability and biocompatibility. In this work, a color-tunable, self-healing protein-based luminescent hydrogel consisting of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lanthanide complexes is prepared via reductant-triggered gelation. Firstly, a bifunctional organic ligand named 4-(phenylsulfonyl)-pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (4-PSDPA) is synthesized, which can react with thiol groups and effectively sensitize the luminescence of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions. Then, the BSA is treated with a reducing agent tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) to produce thiol groups. And the newly formed thiol groups can re-match to form disulfide bonds between two BSA molecules or react with Ln(4-PSDPA)3 complexes, resulting in the formation of an albumin-based luminescent hydrogel. Furthermore, the self-healing, biodegradability and biocompatibility of albumin-based hydrogels have also been demonstrated. We expect that the newly developed multifunctional protein-based hydrogels will find potential applications in the fields of biomedical engineering and optical devices.

Abstract:Natural polymer-based luminescent materials (NPLMs) are widely used in various fields of science and technology during the high-tech era. This study describes the formation of polyacrylamide (PAM) by thermally initiated free radical in situ polymerization of acrylamide monomer. The resulting hydrogel is physically entangled and chemically crosslinked with hypromellose (HPMC) to create a three-dimensional network structure. Lanthanide organic compatibilizers (Ln-L) are then introduced as luminescent units to produce fluorescent hydrogel materials. The study found that the tensile strength of PAM/HPMC/Ln (0/6 Eu/Tb) hydrogel increased by 230.53 % from 11.76 to 27.11 MPa. Similarly, the compressive strength increased by 208.30 % from 16.14 to 33.62 MPa. Additionally, by adjusting the molar ratio of lanthanide metals, hydrogels can achieve colorful fluorescence modulation. Moreover, an information encryption function was implemented using a Python design program in combination with the fluorescent properties of hydrogels.

Abstract:The direct utilization of fluorescent signals to explore biological property or sensing performance has been extensively studied in recent years, whereas the employment of lanthanide ions as tracking agents for the shape memory process will be very rare. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been attached by tryptophan and such polymeric host could bind well with both europium and terbium ions. However, the intra-molecular energy transfer efficiency was relatively low and the second ligand marbofloxacin has been incorporated. In this way, typical red and green emissions derived from europium and terbium ions are afforded. These findings lead to the systematic exploitation of polymer chain network with striking lanthanide luminescence and the detailed shape memory evolution can be recorded. In addition, such organic-inorganic hybrid hydrogel is valuable in metal management and the selective fluorescent responses to copper ions are evaluated. Therefore, the new composite exhibits potentials in signaling and determination of target species with biological or environmental importance.

Abstract:The formation of bio-inspired healable lanthanide luminescent hydrogels is detailed. These materials are composed of K(I)-stabilized guanosine quadruplexes (G4) that were bio-conjugated to mannose-derived picolinic acid ligand 1 using boric acid chemistry (G4-1). The supramolecular self-assembly between G4-1 and europium (Eu(III)) was confirmed, including the use of time-gated luminescence spectroscopy. The most stable hydrogel was formed when the ratio between 1 and Eu(III) was 1:1, and this gel was found to retain a helical column. The obtained gel samples were further characterized using techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), circular dichroism (CD), and luminescence spectroscopy. We demonstrate that a Eu(III)-centered circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signal from guanosine hydrogels can be observed even via long-range interaction, whereas the rheology of these gels exhibits their healable properties.

Abstract:We have developed a facile strategy to fabricate model multicolor hydrogels via a straightforward mixing process of poly acrylonitrile-grafted methacrylamide (PANMAM), polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) and doped lanthanide (Eu/Tb) and zinc ions to form the interpenetrating dual-polymer gel networks. The hydrogels exhibit excellent tunability of multi-spectrum emission colors (including white light) by simply varying the stoichiometry of metal ions. Furthermore, taking the advantage of different metal ion response mechanisms, we have demonstrated the reversible acidity/alkalinity stimuli-responsive behaviors of white-light-emitting hydrogel (WLE gel). Meanwhile, the unique cross-linked network formed through hydrogen-bonding, metal-ligand coordination and ionic interaction is introduced to achieve favorable mechanical strength of hydrogels. These properties enable the possibility in obtaining fluorescent patterns on hydrogels, which are promising candidate for encrypted information with improved security.

Abstract:We report a dual ionic cross-linking approach for the preparation of double-network hydrogels with robustness, high strength, and toughness, sodium alginate/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Fe3+ (SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+), in a facile "one-step" dual ionic cross-linking method. We take advantage of the abundant carboxyl groups on alginate molecules and the copolymer chains and their high coordination capacity with multivalent metal ions to obtain hydrogels with high strength and toughness. The optimal SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+ (SA 2 wt % and AAc S mol %) hydrogels showed a remarkable mechanical performance with 3.24 MPa tensile strength and 1228% strain, both of which remained stable with 76% water content and were highly swelling resistant in an aqueous environment. The hydrogels possessed high fatigue resistance, self recovery, pH-triggered healing capability, shape memory, and reversible gel sol transition facilitated by pH regulation. Moreover, they show three-dimensional (3D) printing processability by properly adjusting the solution viscosity. The approach may provide a convenient way of obtaining hydrogels having high strength and toughness with a number of desirable properties for a broad range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Herein, a polysaccharide-based fluorescent hydrogel with multi-responsiveness simply implemented by concurrent effects of ionic crosslinking/rehydration processes is presented. Specifically, the alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan are chosen to prepare the interpenetrating polymer matrix while a pair of metal cations has been selectively sequentially integrated to alter hydrogel mechanical and fluorescent properties. Experimental results indicate the hydrogels show tunable fluorescent emission in response to multiple cations and pH conditions, and display a reversible "ON/OFF" fluorescent response to M n+ /ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Moreover, this synergistic ionic crosslinking strategy is proved to be highly effective in preparing multifunctional metallohydrogels possessing robust/anisotropic mechanical properties, typical shape memory and cation/pH-responsive fluorescence performance, and a proof-of-application for bacterial detection and sterilization has also been demonstrated. Therefore, we believe this study would provide new insights into multifunctional luminescent hydrogels for advanced biomedical systems.

Abstract:Glutathione (GSH) as a biothiol is an essential peptide related to various diseases. Although multiple strategies for biothiols detection have been developed, there is increasing demand for sensors that can differentiate GSH from cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy), owing to the similar structures and thiol groups in these amino acids. Herein, we report a novel Eu3+/LAPONITE (Lap)-based organic/inorganic hybrid material for selective detection of GSH via an "off-on" process. The fluorescence of Eu(DPA)3@Lap-Tris can be quenched by Cu2+ through photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The addition of GSH into the Eu(DPA)3@Lap-Tris/Cu2+ system induces the removal of Cu2+ from Eu(DPA)3@Lap-Tris and blocks PET, resulting in the recovery of fluorescence. This proposed assay demonstrates higher selectivity toward GSH than Cys and Hcy, and showed a detection limit of 162 nM within a linear range of 0.5-30 μM. Unlike other GSH selective sensors, this platform could be formed into a hydrogel while its sensitivity was maintained. The sensitive response to GSH in serum samples makes this platform an efficient tool for biological applications because of its ease of preparation, high selectivity, good biocompatibility, and low toxicity.
Multi-physically Cross-Linked Hydrogels Simultaneously with MPa Level Mechanical Strengths and High Equilibrium Water Content above 70 %

Abstract:How to balance the mechanical strengths and water content of synthetic hydrogels, and design and prepare new hydrogel systems simultaneously with mechanical strengths over MPa level and equilibrium water content (EWC) above 70 % remain difficult and challenging tasks. In this work, multi-physically cross-linked poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate-tamarind gum/ferric ion/tetraborate (P(AM-co-AAx)/SAy-TGy/ Fe3+/B) hydrogels simultaneously with MPa level mechanical strengths and high EWC above 70 % were suc-cessfully synthesized by combining the advantages of SA and TG. TG played a role of increasing hydration of the hydrogels, rendering the high equilibrium water content, while SA was mainly responsible for providing me-chanical strengths to the hydrogels via ionic coordination bonds with ferric ions. The optimal P(AM-co-AA0.175)/ SA3-TG3/Fe3+/B hydrogels exhibited high elastic modulus of-5.39 MPa, fracture strength of-3.24 MPa, elongation strain at break of 121 %, toughness of-2.58 MJ/m3, and EWC of-71.6 %. The P(AM-co-AAx)/SAy- TGy/Fe3+/B hydrogels also exhibited effective energy dissipation mechanisms, excellent self-recovery properties and environmental stabilities in wide temperature range of 0-75 degrees C and pH range of 3-11. By soaking in 0.9 % NaCl solution, the obtained P(AM-co-AA0.175)/SA3-TG3/Fe3+/B/NaCl hydrogels exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, which could be used as strain sensors.

Abstract:Inorganic-organic co-assembly of anionic polyoxometalates (POMs) with zwitterions provides a facile way to fabricate functional soft materials. In this paper, a translucent, photoluminescent polymer hydrogel was fabricated from Weakley-type POM Na9EuW10O36 (EuW10) and polymerizable imidazole-type zwitterion 3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate (VIPS) via a one-step synthesis method. Detailed characterization indicated that the polymerization of double bonds in VIPS and electrostatic interactions between EuW10 and VIPS play important roles in the formation of the hydrogels. Additionally, the introduction of non-polymerizable zwitterions 3-(1-methyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate (MIPS) or 3-(1-decyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate (C10IPS) can improve the mechanical and luminous performances of the hydrogels. Especially, C10IPS with a long alkyl chain would more significantly alter the coordination environment of EuW10, and consequently resulted in a more efficient energy transfer process. Further investigations revealed that the chemical environment around the Eu3+ can be highly influenced by organic solvents with stronger coordination abilities than water molecules, such as acetone. The translucency and luminescence intensity of the hydrogels can be reversibly transformed after alternately immersing in acetone or H2O for several minutes. Our results provided a useful strategy for the fabrication of luminescent hydrogels by regulating the noncovalent interactions between POMs and zwitterions.

Abstract:The present work combines two rapidly growing research areas—functional supramolecular gels and lanthanide based hybrid materials. Facile hydrogel formation from several lanthanide(III) cholates has been demonstrated. The morphological and mechanical properties of these cholate gels were investigated by TEM and rheology. The hydrogel matrix was subsequently utilized for the sensitization of Tb(III) by doping a non-coordinatingchromophore, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN), at micromolar concentrations. In the mixed gels of Tb(III)–Eu(III), an energy transfer pathway was found to operate from Tb(III) to Eu(III) and by utilizing this energy transfer, tunable multiple-color luminescent hydrogels were obtained. The emissive properties of the hydrogels were also retained in the xerogels and their suspensions in n-hexane were used for making luminescent coating on glass surface.

Abstract:Luminescent supramolecular hydrogels have shown extensive potential for a variety of applications due to their unique optical properties and biocompatibility. Coordination self-assembly provides a promising strategy for the preparation of supramolecular hydrogels. In this contribution, a series of luminescent lanthanide (Ln) supramolecular hydrogels HG-Ln2nL3n1/2 are synthesized by coordination self-assembly of Ln ions and V shaped bis-tetradentate ligands (H4L1 and H4L2) with different bent angles (∠B). Two rigid conjugated ligands H4L1 and H4L2 with bent angles (∠B ≈ 150°) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety were designed and synthesized, which generated hydrogels via the deprotonation self-assembly with lanthanide ions. Characteristic Eu3+ and Yb3+ emissions were realized in the corresponding hydrogels, with intriguing multi-stimulus response behaviors. The luminescence of the HG-Eu2nL3n1 hydrogel can be enhanced or quenched when stimulated by diverse metal ions, attributed to the replacement of the coordinated lanthanide ions and changes in the intersystem crossing efficiency of the ligand. Furthermore, pH-responsive emission of the HG-Eu2nL3n1 hydrogel has also been observed. Our work provides potential strategies for the design of next-generation smart responsive hydrogel materials with variable structures.

Ultra Convenient Synthesis of Lanthanide Based Magnetic-Fluorescent Hydrogels for Multimodal Cellular Imaging

Abstract:A simple approach has been developed to synthesize lanthanide based multifunctional magnetic-fluorescent hydrogels for cellular imaging via MRI and optical imaging synchronously. The multifunctional hydrogels are prepared by covalently conjugating gadolinium and europium chelate with biocompatible chitosan. The room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum shows that the hydrogels have a strong PL emission, which is characteristic of Eu3+ transitions from the excited 5D0 to 7FJ levels. Moreover, in vitro magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis shows that the hydrogels exhibit powerful T1-weighted MRI signal in water. As a result, the hydrogels combine magnetic and fluorescent properties and can be expected to act as a promising multimodal MRI/optical imaging probe.

Abstract:Hydrogels with tunable and responsive luminescence have attracted considerable attention because of their excellent biocompatibility and optical properties. However, most of luminescence hydrogels do not exhibit sufficient adhesion, limiting their further application. Herein, we report the construction of a lanthanide-based luminescent hydrogel with excellent adhesion performance via lanthanide complexes induced crosslinking and physical interaction. Especially, the lanthanide complexes not only can be uniformly dispersed in the monomer solution, but also can be acted as both the coordination crosslinking agent and luminophores. Moreover, upon the addition of lanthanide complexes into the polyacrylamide polymer network containing quaternary ammonium group, the adhesive strength as well as the mechanical behavior of the hydrogel are significantly improved. This work develops a simple strategy for the construction of luminescent hydrogels with adhesion performance and pushes forward their potential application in chemical and biomedical fields.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emissive fluorogens (AIEgens) are promising building blocks for fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (FPHs), because intense fluorescence intensities are usually guaranteed by spontaneous aggregates of hydrophobic AIEgens in hydrophilic polymer network. However, most AIE-active FPHs are single-color fluorescent and cannot display tunable emission colors. Not only that, the efforts to produce mechanical strong AIE-active hydrogels have been largely ignored, restricting their poten-tial uses. Herein, we presented the synthesis of an AIE-active methyl picolinate-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide monomer (MP-NI) for fabricating mechanical tough and multicolor FPHs. Owing to the introduction of bulky and coordinative methyl picolinate group, these specially designed MP-NI molecules were forced to adopt propeller-shaped conformation that renders them with intense aggregation-induced blue emission. Besides, the MP-NI moieties grafted in hydrogel matrix can sensitize red and green fluorescence of Eu3+and Tb3+ via antenna effect. Consequently, multicolor fluorescent hydrogels that sustain a high stress of 1 MPa were obtained by chemically introducing MP-NI moieties into dually cross-linked alginate polymer networks with high-density metal (Ca2+/Tb3+/Eu3+) coordination and hydrogen bonding crosslinks. Their capacity to enable the writing of arbitrary multicolor fluorescent patterns by using Eu3+/Tb3+ as inks were finally demonstrated, suggesting their potential uses for smart display and information encryption.
